He's with us here for Mondays with Mitch here every
Monday morning, seven eighteen. Mitch, hope you had a good weekend,
so you watched that Piston's last foul there. Jalen Brunson

(00:46):
had gotten that pretty regularly throughout. Tim Hardaway doesn't get it.
I'm not asking you whether it's a foul or not,
because I know, damn well you know it's a foul.
I'm asking you from an athletics point of view. From
an athlete's point of you, you are looking for consistency.
Did you feel like there was consistency in that game

(01:07):
or in this series so far? When it comes to
a play like this.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
You just you can't eat your whistle on that. I mean,
especially when he's in the air, he gets them in
the air, he comes down, lands on them. You know,
you got to make that call. And it's just it's
got wrenching because these games come down to a play here,
a play there, and there's no bigger play than obviously
that game, that one. In that game, I mean, he
would have been going to the line for three shots
and probably a good chance at winning the game. So

(01:33):
that's a tough one to take. Man. And listen, we
always got this in the NFL, So you always get
the letter from the league, like on Tuesday after a
game on Sunday, apologizing for the miss calls. Right, I mean,
thanks a lot doesn't mean anything, great, great acknowledge. It
doesn't change the darn darn thing. And that's the unfortunate thing.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
The mental aspect of sports is just as important as
the physical aspects. How do you get through it when
you feel like you've been robbed and you've been in
this situation plenty, when you feel like you got screwed,
how do you get through it?

Speaker 2 (02:07):
You got to rally as a team, and it puts
even bigger chip in your shoulder. This has all the
feel of, you know, the bad Boys as they were
growing up, you know, through the through the eighties, right,
having to get that one step further each each year.
And uh, you know, I always say this, they don't
need to win three in a row. They need to
they need to win one in a row three times.
And that's the mindset they got to have. Going back
to New York, It's like, hey man, we're right there,

(02:28):
We're we're a play away in the last two games
from this thing being a three to one game. So
you know what, go win game five, make it three two,
come back, come back home and uh and get to
win there. You know. So that's just kind of the
mindset you have to have. It's it's all about game
five now, making that play that you know, maybe it's
in the first quarter, hustling, diving, getting a loose ball,
making one, you know, a great defensive play in the
second quarter. They all add up. Man, it's a series

(02:50):
of plays, and you got to have that mindset that
we're just gonna buckle down and uh and just get
it done this next game. It's all you can do.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Is it easy? To do that though. Is is it
easy to forget or is it something you actually want
to use as fuel for the proverbial fire.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
I think it. Uh, you know, they're certainly waking up
anger today. Let's not kid ourselves. I mean they're they're pissed, right,
I mean, that's that's not a good feeling. But I
think when they go, you know, they go to the
shoot around or whatever today, you know, I think you
move on and then for sure when you when you
step into Madison Square Garden, you know, hey, all right,
yeah we're kicked off. But now it's a new game.
But it's just you got to have that dog mentality

(03:28):
and you just got to keep fighting.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Mondays with Mitch with us here on x's m Bros.
Mitch Lions, Mitch lionswealth dot Com joining us, Let's get
to the NFL Draft. What was your overall impression of
the Lions Hall.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Well, I'm on the mindset if Brad Holmes and Dead
Campbell are hugging on a guy, I like it. They've
got a good track record. I like the fact, you know,
hey it's not sexy. But when you go your first
three picks and they're all big horses, up up front
on the offensive defensive lines. That's how you you know,
build consistency, and NFL you've got to win the war
in the trenches. And then you know they're obviously addressing

(04:03):
that need. And uh, you know, I know the Tesla
pick is a bit of a reach in some people's minds,
but I love it the fact that they they think
highly enough of this kids. Cause I remember him coming,
you know, two years ago, and when I knew he
was leaving Hilldale because he's a West Michigan kid, the
Unity Christian want to stay titled there as a quarterback.
You know, I saw his video stuff coming out Hilldown.
I was just in his stats and I was just like, wow,

(04:24):
this kid's And be honest with you, I kind of
forgot about him, you know, you went off to Arkansas
and and and now all of a sudden, I see
they move up to get him, and so hey, if
they think that highly about him, uh, you know, he's like,
as I heard you say, he's a Lions guy.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Right.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
All these guys are, or else they they wouldn't be
on the team. They've got a certain fit, a certain
mold they expect out of their players, and all these
guys fit into that.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
So I'm a big believer that you build a program
from within, but you also stabilize a program from within
as well. So using draft picks on a d tackle
and a couple of offensive guards may not be sexy,
but it sure has been effective for them before, and
they have used those types of resources to draft guys

(05:09):
like Hutchinson, like McNeil, like Barnes, like Taylor Decker, like
Frank ragnow Penney Sewell, we've seen it, right, they're continuing
to do that because you know damn well that I mean,
you need depth at the offensive line and defensive line positions,
especially defensive tackle where you rotate. How do players on

(05:32):
a team feel about the NFL draft when you're watching?
Obviously it's important for you when you get drafted, but
are you monitoring all your team's picks as you move forward?
Are you kind of taking note of which guy is
going to fit where and who it affects others? How
do you do that?

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Well, Hey, listen, I was always again that was kind
of on the bubble, right. I went to camp every year,
no when I was playing for my position, So you
can be darn sure I was watching the draft right,
because your team's take in a tight end, that's probably
you know, that's probably not a good sign. And that
only happened one year as my last year in Pittsburgh,
we took Jeremy Tuman out of Michigan and he was
he was our third tight end the year and unfortunately

(06:10):
he tore his knee up and then I blew out,
I need to end my career. But yeah, no, you've
got your finger on the pulse. Both from a self
preservation how am I extended my career standpoint and as
well as hey, what's the team doing to upgrade us?
And you know, and and hopefully you come out of
that weekend with some most some excitement as a player,
right because you know you've got some pieces to help you.

Speaker 1 (06:31):

Joining us here on x'es and Bros. The defensive end

(06:54):
position was a positioned need. We talked last week, especially
after round once. We don't need to get into the
Williams pick. But it's interesting that it was just the
one defensive end. How are you on draft on need
or draft on best available player? What's the philosophy there
in your mind that most teams should follow.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
I think listen. I mean, obviously, if there was a
guy they felt that was worthy of, you know, getting
getting the first pick, for example, they would have got
to edge a guy right. And the reality of it
is is, you know, off of the line is the
need off the line is a huge need on any team.
I don't care, because you've got to have depth there
because your whole offense is predicated on keeping your quarterback

(07:39):
up right and and being evil in this. And then
in the case of this team, you know that we
run the ball right, and we run the ball, we
have two great running backs. You got to blow holes
open for him. And so I like those picks for
that reason. I mean, you know, would you like to
see us, you know, a notch rusher? Yeah, but wouldn't
we all? I mean, right, because that's the opposite side
of the coin, right, If if you can get that

(07:59):
rush on the passer. It makes everybody on defense better.
But conversely, the big old linean up front can can
keep your guy, get them extra half second to get
a throw off, which can make all the difference in
the world in the season.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Right.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
So the other thing I would say, Matt looking at this,
I was thinking about this on the receivers they took, right,
You heard them say they're great blockers. How often are
people on the street really worried about how how well
their receivers blocked. But I can tell you and a
team that runs the ball, that's a huge difference. Right,
that's turning a seven yard run into a seven yard
run for Jamier Gibbs because of receivers blocking downfield. And

(08:32):
you know, I'm around Saint Brown's great at it. So
they're building the culture or they have a culture built
clearly already. But that's just expected.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
Right.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
They're going to come in and they're going to play
to the whistle, and their receivers are going to block.
You're not going to have the guy not the name names,
but I mean I played the teammates that would take
two steps and watch the you know, watch the guy
go make a tackle because they knew they weren't getting
the ball right.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
Yeah, that's a great point. I'm glad you brought that up.
That's an excellent point. One more before I let you go.
Luke Newman, Michigan State offensive Lineman, Bears six pick. What
can you tell us about his work ethic and how
he might fit into Chicago real quick?

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Well, I think you're going to see in Chicago Ben
Johnson kind of you know, the same same mindset, right,
is what he's coming from in Detroit. Build a culture
of tough guys up front that can lunchbucket kind of
guys that are going to you know, grind it out
and and uh, you know, you guys are going to
show up and and work hard and keep them as
George Burrow as you say, work hard, keep your mouth shut,
and good things will happen to you. And I think
you're going to see a lot of that. You know,

(09:28):
Ben build the build the Bears the same way as
he saw the lines be built.

Speaker 1 (09:32):
Yeah. Well, let's hope Luke is part of it because
it's a feel good story. Mitch. Always good to visit
with you. Thanks for the time, We'll talk soon. Okay,
sounds good, buddy.
