Speaker 1 (00:00):
Some of the numbers in sports getting absolutely crazy. It's
never crazy to talk with mich Lions, our friend from
Mitch Lion's wealth helping you with your retirement. Never too
early to look at that and always enjoy the conversation
with Mitch Lions. Mitch, Hope, you had a great weekend.
Welcome back to the show. How should the Tigers fans
feel about a wild card berth for their team? Do
(00:22):
you think?
Speaker 2 (00:23):
I think we should feel just fine about it, because
there was a time coming down that stretch that I
wasn't sure we'd be in the playoffs at all. So
I'm feeling pretty good. We've got Scooble on the bump
to start the playoffs, and you get that first win
and all bets are off because I got to do
a split one with the Guardians and you're off to
the next series and no one's remembering September at that point.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Who do you like in the MLB playoffs? And why?
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Oh you know, I mean, I kind of like watching
Seattle all year. I think they've got a good story. Obviously,
you've got Yankees or red hot. That's the beautiful thing
about sports, So it doesn't really matter how you come
in how you actually when you get there, And so
I'm looking forward to getting my bag of hoop porn
and sitting back and watching this thing on fold.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
No, it's interesting. The Reds are in. They are the
first team in history to qualify for the playoffs without
a qualifying hitter batting two seventy without any hit, or
hitting twenty five homers without a pitcher to win fifteen games,
or a pitcher to notch two hundred strikeouts. Sports is amazing, seriously,
(01:33):
isn't it. It's incredible the teams are able to do
that now a long time in order for that to happen.
Lions beat the Browns yesterday, another impressive win form. What's
stuck out to you most in that victory?
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Yeah, I thought, and I said this on my podcast today,
but the NFL is hard. It's hard to win a game, right,
and you're going up against the Cleveland Browns defense yesterday
that's coming in is number one in the NFL. It
was a little funky to start with, right, but you know,
Jamo and Golf were not connecting a lot of targets
(02:07):
going uncaught initially, but they got it figured out. The defense,
I thought, looked great other than the first drive. Again,
for whatever reason, we can't get out of our own
way on an opening drive this season. But I thought
they looked good after that, and I expected them too.
I mean, Cleveland's offense wasn't great coming in, but I
you know, anytime you can get a special team touchdown,
(02:27):
it's huge.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
That was big.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
But you know, make no apologies for wins in the NFL.
I don't care who you're playing. You can only play
who's on the schedule. And they got it done against
a really good defense, and you see her on the league.
That doesn't always happen. You know, you see the Giants
knocking off an undefeated Chargers team with a rookie quarterback.
I mean, you just you got to play each game
as its own entity and take care of business.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Pick up his book, Retirement of Steel digital copy free
on his website, Mitch Lionswealth dot com. Calling Today eight
six six eighty five steal. That's eight six six eighty
five steal. It's Mondays with Mitch Mitch Lyons here with
us on x'es and bros. About a quarter of the
way through the season, all right, seventeen games, but they've
played for so let me just round it up to
(03:13):
a quarter with you and if you don't mind, yeah,
what do you like most and what is your biggest
concern for the Lions right now?
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Do you think what I like most is our offense
is kind of who I thought they were, who we
thought they were coming in, right, nothing's changed there. Their
offensive line was a question mark. I think we've they've shown,
they've proven since game one that they can keep golf clean,
they can they can establish a running game. Obviously Money
(03:39):
didn't have as great a game yesterday, but but Gibbs
had a good one, and I think that's, you know what,
You're going to see one of those. So at least
one of those, if not, both are going to have,
you know, big games each week. So that's that's good
to see. Concerns I mean again, injuries. Here we go again, right,
I mean both starting quarterbacks go down with injuries yesterday.
We'll wait to see how serious those are. Hopefully not
(04:00):
season ending of any sort, but again, it's still a concern,
especially if you're going down to play a couple of
whiteouts that are pretty good. I know they don't have
Joe Burrow this week, but Jamar Chase going against anybody,
but our best is not a great thought. Uh So,
you know that's my biggest concern here. Can we can
we can? We can we keep the lug nuts on
the wheels.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
In terms of injuries, this season, both Michigan stayed in
Michigan had bye weeks. What do players do during the
bye week to a stay sharp and b let's face it,
sometimes you just got to get away and you've got
to clear your mind. How do you handle both that
those situations?
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Yeah? I think you know, typically coaches will give you
a couple of days off, you know, just to get
away completely. Maybe they'll let you go back home or whatnot.
Give it, give yourself a little break mentally. There've been
going at it since camp, so it's a little early
for the buye, but I mean even now what they've
been going at it for a couple of months now,
and just to get away from the game entirely. I
always liked it, you know, just a kind of a
time to rest up, get extra treatment, while a little
(04:57):
extra film study, you know, both of our cells and
then our next opponent, put a little extra film time
in and just getting maybe some harder workouts in than
maybe you do during the season. It gives you a
little extra time to get some good strength conditioning in
and have time to recover from those so that's good.
But I will say it was always an empty feeling
not playing on Saturday or Sunday. You're a football player.
(05:19):
You're conditioned to play, and you know, I like the
time off, but I hated not playing when the game
game day rolled around. So it's always good to get
back on the game week and get back into your
normal routine.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
You and I like the outdoors and you like it
as a hunter, but you also golf a little bit
as well. How frustrated were you with the Ryder Cup?
Speaker 2 (05:41):
You know, I was so excited to kick back and
watch that, and after Friday's performance, I wasn't really as
excited anymore. So it's it's I mean at golf. That's
why it's a four letter word, right. I Mean, there's
just sometimes when things don't go your way, and they
certainly didn't go to the Americans a way. The Europeans
played great. We didn't we didn't step up in the
big moments, and it is what it is. It's it's
(06:02):
frustrating to watch, but you know, I don't I don't
think I'm not losing a lot of sleep over it necessarily,
but you know, I would have liked to watch a
little more competitive performance from the Americans.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Yeah, why can't Why Why do you think us A
can't come through in that format?
Speaker 2 (06:19):
I don't know, you know, it's uh, I think it
does get into your head a little bit, especially after
that performance. I mean that, what do you think everyone's
gonna be talking about two years from now, right, You're
gonna be talking about all all the power. Everyone's gonna
talking about how we got our bus whoop this this year.
So it's gonna be first and fore and foremost in
everyone's mind again. So you can say it doesn't matter,
but the reality of it is that that's that's gonna
(06:41):
be on their minds again. And then you maybe start
pressing a little too hard trying to you know, making
making that plot, making that shot that you're just gripping
that club a little too tight and whatnot, and and
you just you just don't make the plays. And it's
that's sports, though, man. You got to overcome that. And
just like a bad team ascend becomes a good team,
you know, you've got to be able to get better
(07:03):
in that format.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Listen, we can parsel a lot of numbers to fit
a certain narrative. James Franklin is two and twenty one
all time against top six ranked teams. His Penn State
team lost in overtime to Oregon thirty to twenty four,
and admitted afterwards that the non conference schedule did not
prepare Penn State enough for the game against Oregon. Now,
(07:26):
it wasn't the Big Ten opener, and his non conference
schedule is Nevada, FIU, and Villanova, And I'm sorry it
was the Big Ten opener. I don't know why I
said that, so it obviously didn't. How do you how
important do you think non conference schedules are for Power
five teams? And how would you kind of divide them
(07:48):
up if you're not going to play three other Power
fives to get ready for your conference schedule? Right, But
how would you go about getting your team prepared for
something like that?
Speaker 2 (07:58):
Well, I definitely would be happy at least one marquee matchup,
you know, And I don't know how far out this
season's schedule was set for Penn's days, so I'm not
going to cast stones at them. But in this day
and age with the expanded playoffs. I mean, you know,
you lose one of your first three games, it's not
going to knock you out of the race, right, but
it can prepare you for those battles that are going
(08:19):
to come every Saturday in the Big Ten. So yeah,
obviously he felt that they weren't prepared, and I would agree.
And it's different when you're you know, playing playing some
of those lower echelon teams and all of a sudden
you get the speed of Oregon coming as it's a
different monster. So I think that's one of the one
of the things I like about college football now is
(08:40):
the fact that hey go ahead and schedule a little
tougher games. They're not going to knock it out because
you lost one game in September, right, So I definitely
think team should be scheduled a little tougher than maybe
they have in the past.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
One of my favorite parts of the week talking with
