Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, let's shift to Detroit, because that's what everyone
wants to hear you talk about. Tigers are back to
winning series. That's kind of my take this morning. I know,
it's tough to sweep a team. It's even tougher to
sweep a team in a four game series, and they
got clipped yesterday by the Twins, but they win the
series three to one, scored a ton of runs in
the process. By the way, So is the offense back
for the Tigers reps? Is that what you're kind of
(00:20):
looking at right now?
Speaker 2 (00:23):
I mean, well, kind of.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Like you said, it is hard to sweep a team,
especially in a four game set, even if you are
playing a true, glorified Triple A baseball club. But I mean,
it feels like there's some semblance of normalcy. I just
think that with this Tigers team right now, there's just
so much unpredictability about what you're going to get on
(00:45):
a daily basis. And at least the bats woke up
a little bit, and even for the guys that have
been struggling, you know, mainly looking at a guy like
Riley Green, who had some big hits in this series
despite the fact that he strikes out more than anyone
of them ever seen in my entire life.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
You know, Carrie Carpenter leading the league by the way,
Riley Green is leading the majors, and stress By by.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
A landslide too, I'm sure.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
But but even like you know, Carrie Carpenter kind of
gets his stroke back a little bit. So it's been.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Promising for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
I think that I think the main storyline is back
to the pitching and has been the pitching. And you know,
even even the starting pitching like Chris Paddock, has been
pretty good. And all of this starts so far except yesterday.
And you know, what did you expect out of a
guy that's that's had an erra in the in the
(01:37):
mid fores this entire season. So it's just a really
unpredictable team right now. And you know, at least other
teams are helping you out by losing in terms of
your lead over the Central.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
But at this point, in a very similar way to
how I.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
Feel about the Lions, just get in, Just get in,
don't care how, and do some damage.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
Here's what I'm concerned about.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Potentially concern is be a little bit of a strong word,
but the Tigers do play the Astros tonight start a
three game set. They would be considered one of the
big boys, and although they only have a game and
a half lead on the Seattle Mariners, and I think
the Mariners might track them down. By the way, a
lot of people you alluded to it are leaning on
the fact that the Tigers play in a really weak
division and because of that, they're diminishing the Tigers six
(02:21):
game lead or whatever it's at now over Cleveland. How
concerned are you about Houston and what are you going
to be looking for in this series against Houston?
Speaker 3 (02:31):
I mean, I think, like to me, every opponent right
now is nameless and faceless. I think you just got
to go out and try to put together consistent outings
from your pitching. And it starts with the starting pitching,
and you know, with the guy like you know, Jack
Flaherty for example. You know, Charlie Morden, like it or not,
is going to be a mainstay in this rotation through
(02:53):
the end of the season. You know what you're getting
out of Tarrek school Well, not that he even had
a great start his last time out, So to me,
it's just stretching the starting pitching to go. You know,
I mean, five innings seems so meek these days, but
can you go six innings and then and then whoever
aj Hinch decides to bring out of the pen, And
it seems like it's been this revolving door of like,
(03:15):
you know, Hannife goes down, now Hannify's back up, Herder
goes down. So it's it's just you got to have
some some stability in the bullpen to know that, Okay,
player X is coming out of the pen, here's what
you're gonna get, here's who's coming in next, and just
build upon it and and have some some complete games
(03:35):
from your pitching staff. I think the bats will will
will be okay. Like I just think they have enough
and aj Hinch is good at pulling the strings for
matchups and whatnot. But at the end of the day,
Trent like, look around the league, man, like, how do
you think it feels to be a Cubs fan or
a Mets fan or a Yankees fan? Like all these
teams that were just dominant to start the season. You know,
(03:59):
water find its level teams have been struggling. So it's
just about getting hot at the right time and playing
consistent baseball. And that's all I care out of the
next What is it three games that they have against Houston?
Speaker 4 (04:11):
Right?
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Ryan Rabinowitz of the Motown Rundown joining us here on
Axas and Bros. We're brought to you by Meyer. He's
here on the Lindsay Hunter Foundation guest line.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
Rams.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Let's shift to the Lions, because, let's be honest, that's
what everyone wants to talk about. Even though you have
a seventy three win Tigers team, Hendon Hooker and Isaac
Teslah in the preseason is more of a draw right
now than that. I don't know about that, but you
know what I'm saying, people want to talk Lions. I've
had the take this morning that I'll be really interested
to see what John Morton, the new offensive coordinator, can
(04:43):
do when he's not doing all the trickery and pulling all.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
The gimmicks that Ben Johnson did. Not saying it'll be
better or worse.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
And I'm not taking a dump on Ben Johnson's play
calling style, but I think what Ben Johnson is now
finding out in Chicago.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
I could be wrong about this, but.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
He doesn't have the cast of characters he had in Detroit,
and I think that's where some of that frustration that's
being reported stems from I'm really curious to see what
john Morton can do with this cast of characters when
it might be a little more dumbed down.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
Am I crazy?
Speaker 2 (05:13):
No?
Speaker 3 (05:13):
I think that's the story. I think that's the storyline.
I mean, it's so hard to get a feel for
anything in the preseason, truly, and you know, and we've
talked about this too, Trent, like it's it's hilarious how
the main storyline around Lions football right now is like
the backup quarterback situation. So I think even it's hard
to even really get a feel for what they're what
(05:34):
they're trying to do because you haven't seen your you know,
your your real weapons out there in a Johnny Morton offense.
So yeah, I don't need like the trick plays and
stuff have been have been fun. It just kind of
seems like that stuff will travel with Ben Johnson and
good for him, you know, But to me, it's just
about can you can you keep the defense on their
(05:55):
toes and can you leverage the the athletes that you
have on the offensive side of the ball. It sounds
like Jamiir Gibbs and David Montgomery are going to spend
more time on the field together, and you might see
Jamiir Gibbs play more of like a wide receiver type
situation just to get him in space and allow him
to run around. And so yeah, I think the whole
(06:16):
I think the whole storyline of the season comes down
to what kind of offense can you put on the field.
And you know, given the talent that you have in
terms of your offensive weapons and another year of Jared
Goff and we also we can't talk about the offense
without looking at an offensive line, it's going to look
(06:37):
a lot different than they were last year. And so
you know that's that's where the games are won and
lost up the middle. So if you can keep Jared
Goff upright, it's gotta be hard to scheme to not
be able to scheme up a productive offense with some
of the guys that are on this team, you know,
between Laporta and JMO and Saint Brown and now it's
Asla looks like he can be a real control be
(07:00):
there as a starter. Gibbs Montgomery like, I feel like
you and I could step in there and put some
points up.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Truly, one of the guys that feels overlooked. Perhaps is
David Montgomery. And I don't want to say for good reason,
but when you have a team that's this rich on offense,
that's just bound to happen to somebody, and David Montgomery
seems to be that kind of guy. Rabs, I want
to get your take on that, but first I want
everyone to hear what David Montgomery said about that and
what Dan Campbell followed up with a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Here we go.
Speaker 5 (07:28):
It's probably the hungry is that I have been, you know,
because I feel like a lot of people kind of
forget that I'm here in the offense too. So I'm
not here to prove anybody wrong. I'm here to prove
myself right and be the best teammate that I can be.
But I definitely got like a big chip on my shoulder.
Speaker 6 (07:43):
Believe me, he has not forgotten. We know exactly who
he is, where he is, and what he's capable of.
And the one two punch with he and Gibbs is
it's special and it's rare in this league in my opinion,
especially nowadays. So there is a place for David. He's
going to help us and we're going to use him,
and we'll use he and Gibbs together.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Gonna use both those guys together on the field at
times are all reports. How do you feel about David
Montgomery perhaps being overlooked?
Speaker 3 (08:10):
Well, what an incredible answer for David Montgomery to give.
And I think that just speaks to the culture of
this team, Like he's for a guy to say he's
never been hungrier after how productive he's been for this team,
and like really finding a home in the league, in
the Lions. And yeah, I think you know you and
I Trent, how many times have we been have we
(08:31):
looked at each other and complained about the You know,
here comes Gibbs for a series. Now it's Montgomery and
you don't see Gibbs. Now now it's Gibbs and you
don't see Montgomery. So I'm hoping that they can find
a way to work them both in. But this Lions
team is not what they are without David Montgomery, let's
not get it twisted. So it's to have a true
(08:52):
almost call him like a belkow back, even though it's
not like he's touching the ball thirty five times a game.
I mean, some of the biggest plays he could biggest. Sure, sure, absolutely,
I think he's built like that.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
But some of the biggest.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
Plays and biggest drive the Lions have had over the
years have come on the heels of like, hey, it's
third and three and we need three tough yards and
David Montgomery's the guy to get it for you.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
Rams. How about Week one last year on Sunday Night
Football Week one against the Rams, Remember that the overtime
drive where it was just Montgomery Montgomery, Montgomery, Yeah, I'm
down the field.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
He's the man.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
He's the man. He's It's just he's a strong runner.
I feel like he runs angry and he's he is.
If there's a guy that you need to give you,
like I said, the tough yardages, like it ain't Shamir Gibbs,
I'm like, you know, sorry, I'm David Montgomery is the
guy that I look at first if you want to
put the ball on the ground and you know, make
something happen, or make something happen on the goal line.
(09:48):
So I mean, what a luxury it is to have
those two guys and you know, again all eyes on
Johnny Morton. Let you know, get them both involved and
have them on the field at the same time and
make the defense make a decision if we're to take away,
because you can't do both.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
We've talked quite a bit this morning about John Morden.
Coming up at eight eighteen, we'll talk about Kelvin Shepard
because let's not forget the Lions have a new defensive
coordinator as well, although he was promoted from within. Ryan
Rabinowitz here on the Lindsay Hunter Foundation guest Line, Ryan,
what's your take on Kelvin Shepherd getting promoted from outside
linebackers coach to linebackers coach now to defensive coordinator.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
Well, I definitely I appreciate the internal hire. I remember
the first look I feel like we had of him
was during the Hard Knocks Yes yep series. And again,
just like you talk about culture, you know, and I
think that I think that organizations that are able to
promote from within and have guys that have been around
the program, they know how things run, They're familiar with
(10:50):
a lot of the faces that are in the building.
I think when it works out well, it works out
really well, it pays you in dividend. So again, I'm
not going to sit here and for tend to pretend
to know that all the schematics and what Kelvin Sheppard
brings to the table. But I do think that players
love to play for him.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
I think he absolutely knows what he's doing.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
He's familiar with he's a pro, he played, he played
in the league, you know, so it's like, obviously he
has some you know, ability to coach and instruct. So,
you know, I think with a healthy defense, and this
defense had some dogs too. You can talk about the
offense all day long. The defense was so banged up
last year. Again, like you and I, You and I
might have been on the depth chart and he would
(11:31):
have even known it, like with how banged up they
were last year. So a healthy offense, a healthy Aiden Hutchinson,
and you hear all this stuff coming in camp of
how dominant he's been, which is great. So let's see
it on the field. You know, obviously it's it's a
tough league and a tough league to defend in with
all these high potent offenses.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
But you got to trust him, right with everyone.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
That's the whole mantra around the city is, you know,
trusting Brat Holmes.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
So we got to trust him with that.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Call to between him and Dan Campbell, a couple.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
More questions here with Ryan's of the Motown Rundown Podcast. Ryan,
There's a couple of players in particular that I'm watching
for this season that I just think could be on
the verge of maybe not breaking out, but I just
want to see how they fit in. And one of
those guys is like Christian Mahogany, for example, a guy
who's going to be thrust into a new role, an
expanded role, and a very important role. Dammit, because this
(12:20):
team runs the ball a lot. This team needs to
protect Jared Goff. I know how you feel about Goff
under center. Uh, give me a couple of names or
guys who you're watching closely, maybe not in the preseason,
but when we kick off Week one against the Packers
in Lambeau.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
I think the first guy that comes to mind is
Jack Campbell. And I just say that a lot of it,
you know, with the Alice Azelonei situation. I mean, I
think that Jack Campbell was drafted and it was a
pretty popular draft pick.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
I would say, just because.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Like you understand the make and model and you understand
where he comes from it being you know, the defensive
player at Iowa for a for a school that's known
for their defense. So I just feel like with each
year we kind of get you, kind of get that
tease every year with Jack Campbell and now especially given
the fact that there's so much uncertainty about the future
(13:15):
of Alexanzeloni, like now's the time for this guy to shine,
you know. So I'm hoping that he has a little
bit more, a little bit more responsibility.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
It sounds like you will.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
I think he's wearing the green sticker this year. It
sounds like I could be way off.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
No, he is.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
He is.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
They've turned it over to him, yep, which is which.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
Is great and it's it's no slight to Alex Azeloni.
I'll also stay with the linebackers trend, to be honest
with you, because you know how I am with this team,
like this is the linebacking group is the one group
that I'm always critical of because I just feel like
they don't I just feel like the Lions don't allocate.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
A lot of resources to that group.
Speaker 4 (13:53):
But Jamie Collins agency right.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Yeah, but I believe it or not, Jamie Collins didn't
work out here. But I would say Derek Barnes too,
Like I think Derek, I mean Derek Barnes just got
just got paid. He's here for another two three years,
I think it was three years. And you know, a
guy that was also banged up a bit last year
that we've seen some flashes of, and you know, just
just hopefully a guy that this year is going to
(14:18):
be a true disruptor that's going to be playing pretty
much every down. So I think those are two guys
that I just like if those two guys are super
productive this year at the second level of this defense
and knowing what the what the defensive line is going
to look like, knowing what the secondary looks like. Even
though they do lose Rakestraw for the year, which sucks,
(14:39):
but if that linebacking corps is all over the field
and in your face and stuff in the run, and
a little bit better in coverage like they they, the
Lions could be one of the best defenses in the
league if everyone stays healthy. Not gonna would.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
So those are my two guys truly to look out for.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Yeah, stays healthy and maybe takes a step when you
look at Terry on Arnold or hell, maybe even Brian
branch At Kirby Joseph, they're still young enough where they
could reach an even higher potential. Right, But Rabs, before
we let you go really quick. We only got like
thirty seconds here. I know you had a frank ragnow jersey.
You can't wear that anymore. I mean you could.
Speaker 4 (15:14):
But if you were to get a new player's jersey,
who would it be and why?
Speaker 2 (15:18):
Uh could be? Jack Fox? I think Jack Fox might
be pound for the best player and then had in
the football league.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
But the rag now jersey's not going anywhere in a
new jersey's not in the budget right now. So it'll
be rag now until.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
I turn old and gray understood.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
