Speaker 1 (00:00):
How many times have you been in a conversation with
friends during the college football bowl games and the game,
you know will use the cliche that's some in a
meaningless game. All Right, you're playing in what used to be,
you know, the old blue bonded Bowl. Who knows what
(00:20):
they're called anymore because everyone's got some type of you know,
logo associated associated with it, with a business, so it's
no longer just called a bull. It's called that's named
after the business. And you say, if I were him,
I wouldn't play. Why not, Well, it's a meaningless game
(00:41):
and he might get hurt, and you know it's going
to hurt his NFL draft chances. We saw it with
Michigan this past year. Right, why in the world would
will Johnson play? If I'm Colston Lovelin, I'm not playing,
That's what we hear. I'd play if it was a
national championship game. I'd play, if it was the College
Football Playoff four Final four. But I wouldn't play in
(01:04):
just a meaningless bowl game against Alabama at the end
of the season. I shook my head and it's meaningless
to who it's meaningless, But you're gonna watch it it's meaningless,
but there's gonna be a sold out crowd there. It's meaningless,
but Las Vegas is gonna take bets on it. What
do you mean meaningless? I get the reservation for not
(01:24):
wanting to play, but we'll use that as a consistent
argument for college players not to play. They have too
much at stake. Okay, end of a regular season game
could be Basco, it could be any sport. Okay, last year,
not this past season, but last year Cade Cunningham, we
(01:45):
all speculated could have played. Why didn't he play? Pistons
were going nowhere at fourteen wins. What's the point of
playing and risking injury? Right? Okay, we're gonna use those stances.
Those types of vibe is associated with sports. But we're
going to allow an NFL player to participate in a
(02:07):
flag football game for a gold medal. I don't think
that makes any sense whatsoever. Personally, I would not want
any of my players participating in that. You realize, I'm
sure you've heard the stories. There are players who have
(02:27):
in their contract you cannot do X because of what
it could mean to your career and to the team.
The team invests a lot of money in you as
a first round pick, as a second round pick, whatever round,
and then invest a lot of money in you by
signing you to a contract extension. They put certain language
(02:49):
in your contract that prevents you from driving a motorcycle,
playing off season basketball. If you're in football surfing, I
don't know. Something that might tear an ACL might take
you out for a full season. You are their responsibility,
but they can't hold your hand twenty four hours a day,
(03:09):
three hundred and sixty five days a year, so they
have to put it in writing. How is this going
to be any different? Look, I understand that at any
point in time, somebody can get hurt you, but you
have to be able to try and control as much
as you can control. If I'm an NFL team, I'm
(03:31):
making sure that my guy is not playing in this.
And I don't mean to be a wet blanket here.
That's just the facts for me. Our Meyer hotline is
eight sixty six eight three, eight forty eight forty three.
So here's what you're going to get when it comes
to this. It will be the rules allow it will
(03:51):
be a ten member squad. Okay, it's going to be
ten players on the team. A quarterback who can only
run past line of scrimmage after first handing the ball
off and receiving a lateral or going out for a pass.
You'll have a center who can go out for a
(04:12):
pass immediately after snapping the ball. You'll have a wide
receiver slash running back who can line up is either
a standard running back or a wide receiver. Then you
will also have on defense a rusher who can rush
the quarterback from seven yards off the line of scrimmage,
a defensive back to your traditional corner, and a safety. Okay,
(04:35):
the field is going to be seventy by twenty five
yards forty minute games to twenty minute halves. Who now,
remember this this is in twenty twenty eight, so this
is three years down the road. I want you to
think who would be a perfect player in these positions,
who is currently or maybe not even currently in the NFL.
(04:58):
I guess I shouldn't expect you to to name his
specific player who is currently in college. So if you
think maybe Arch Manning in three years is gonna be
the guy, I don't know, but think about how old
certain players are. Like Jayden Daniels is twenty seven years old,
so in three years obviously he'll be thirty. Is he
the right guy for, you know, an NFL or a
(05:23):
United States NFL flag football team. I was reading an
article yesterday. These are the players they had. They had
Jayden Daniels as the quarterback. They had Jamaier Gibbs and
uh Devon and from the Dolphins as running backs. They
(05:48):
had Justin Jefferson, Jamar Chase, and Travis Hunter as wide receivers.
And I think they put Hunter on there because he
could play corner as well.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
That's smart.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Yeah, it is kind of smart from a pass rush standpoint.
They have Micah Parsons and Nolan Smith. He's the linebacker
for the Eagles. They have defensive backs Derek Stingley and
Max Harriston. Okay, So as much as you and I
may look at it and go, well, I would definitely
(06:21):
use I don't know, Patrick Surtin or somebody like that
right now as a cornerback. I think they're looking three
years down the road and they're looking at age primarily
some of the other players considered. So I played this
game with a friend of mine yesterday and I said,
who would you have? And they said, Lamar Jackson. I'm like, Okay, yeah,
(06:43):
I get that dangerous weapon for sure, probably like a
quarterback who's a little bit more accurate, But you've got
to have somebody who can run, right, Josh Allen wouldn't
be a bad suggestion either, Patrick Mahome. I mean, those
are the names that immediately come to mind. We automatically
think the best in the business, and I think Joe
Burrow is one of the best in the business. But
you probably don't put him in there because he doesn't
run as well, it's not as effective.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Yeah, you want a dual threat for a flag ball.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Threat, right, I mean, would Caleb Williams be in that conversation?
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Perhaps if Jaden Daniels is, then he sure is, you know.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Yeah, I mean obviously Daniels with a better year, but
I was going to say, it depends on what happens
the next couple of years, so he should be at
least in the back of your mind. I would hope
he proves an I'm trying to thinking Brock Perdy.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
You're not thinking Jared Goff No.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
I mean, and that's no disrespect to GoF, but I
mean that's not what you're going to want from the position, right,
I mean, maybe maybe a guy like JJ McCarthy. Maybe
I might be pushing the envelope a little bit. It's
funny that Jalen Hurts. His name wasn't brought up, and
yet that guy does a really good job as a
dual threat. But you want someone who has accuracy but
also who can run a little bit and makes the
(07:52):
right decisions running. Would you want think about this for
a minute. Jamiir Gibbs is a really important piece to
the line and is going to continue to stay that way.
Would you want him playing flag football in the Olympics.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
Selfishly for entertainment, of course, but as a Lions fan.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
No. So that's interesting. How you say that selfishly for entertainment? Selfishly?
Speaker 2 (08:16):
For me?
Speaker 1 (08:16):
I look at it like I don't want him to
get hurt.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
So no, yeah, that's what that's what I say. Fan.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
Yeah, but you say selfishly for entertainment, yes, I say
selfishly as a Lions fan. No, that's it's an interesting
I mean, there's no right or wrong answer here. I
just I wouldn't want to do it. Now. There are
other names they've got associated with it, Ashton Genty, who
knows what he's going to be, like Bejon Robinson who
I think is really underrated. I like him a lot. Okay,
(08:43):
I would have that. Bucky Irving for Tampa wouldn't be
a bad choice either. Again, so my son said, from
a wide receiver Standpard, He's like, you've got to have
Tyreek Kill in there, And I said, well, this is
three years down the road. Don't know what he's going
to be. Like Jamison Williams is in those who should
(09:03):
also be considered. According to this article, I wouldn't want
one line, let alone two lines if they're under contract,
I mean both of them. There's something has to be
resolved there. Something has to be done regarding those two.
That's the whole thing. But what you're looking for is
(09:25):
you're looking for speed. The athleticism is obviously there, multipurpose
it would be great to have, you know, like back
in the day, it would have been awesome to have
like a Charles Woodson in there because he could play
both sides of the ball and would be a huge
advantage for you. That's the reason Travis Hunter might be
a huge advent advantage. Who are the I think the
(09:47):
bigger debate might be the wide receivers and who you
would have like Justin Jefferson is all in. He wants
to play in this for had articles about that. The
wide receivers are the really good debate on who you
would want on your flag football team. I don't. To me,
(10:09):
it doesn't matter because I think they're going to dominate
no matter why. The thing that matters most to me
is as long as it's not a Detroit Lion. I
don't want my guy subject to injury out there. You
want to take Ceedee Lamb, go ahead. You want to
take my neighbors, go right ahead. You want to stick
(10:29):
with Jamar Chase and Justin Jefferson, the two best wide
receivers in football, go right ahead. You want to wheel
out Tyreek Hill in there. I'm fine with that too.
Drake London's got good speed for go ahead. Leave my
guys out of it. I have never been that guy
who believes college players shouldn't play in a bowl game.
(10:51):
That's their choice, okay, But don't play in a bowl game, okay,
because it's a meaningless game and you might get injured.
I've never that guy. I would be that guy in
this case. It's different for me anyway. It's different for
a young player who's about to try and reach his
(11:12):
dream and ascend to the top of his career than
it would be for a guy who is already there
making money and part of a franchise in which that
franchise has invested so much time, effort, and money getting
him to that point. I do not want any Detroit
(11:32):
Lions participating in a flag football game in the Olympics
in twenty twenty eight. The phone number on the Meyer
hotline is eight sixty six eight three, eight forty eight
forty three. You can text the program Sports Radio to
twenty one thousand. We'll get your thoughts on that. Would
love to hear Why you would argue that who else
(11:53):
would you have in there? And why would you want
your guys in there? You really don't need a nineteen
ninety two dream team here. You don't you can take
I would argue that, like Derek Henry's probably not maybe
he would have been last year. He's big, he's strong,
(12:14):
but you're you're not trying to tackle him. But if
you think about it, even if you took some average
NFL players, do you think Austria, Austria or Mexico or
Germany or France or Italy is going to be able
to hang with the United States. Hell no, they're not
(12:36):
going to be able to do that.
