Speaker 1 (00:00):
Last night is I'm wrapping things up watching the various events.
I see this tweet from a baseball follower and they
write which all time lineup is best? And of course,
and I've said this before, I've kind of I wouldn't
(00:20):
say I've done this topic, but I've mentioned this before
on some of my shows back in the past six
seven years ago. When you look at the all time lineups,
you immediately go to the Yankees and the Red Sox.
Everybody does that. I'm sure there's a lot of baseball
markets and fans in those markets who feel like, you
(00:43):
know what, our best of the best can be just
as good, if not better, until you look at their lineups.
So this person said, and this is just their opinion,
Yankees would have Jeter it short and Mantle and then
you got a Rod at third, Ruth is the DH,
DiMaggio Garig, Reggie Jackson, Robinson Cano at second base and
(01:08):
Yogi Berra. That's pretty strong. It's pretty strong. Red Sox
would have in the outfield Ted Williams and Carlia Strimsky
and Manny Ramirez pretty damn good, David Ortiz as the DH,
and then Jimmy Fox, Wade Boggs, Nomar Garciapara, Dustin Pedroia,
Carlton Fisk again really strong. I had to respond. I
(01:33):
had to. I just had to. You know, let's let's
not overlook the history of the Tigers franchise. And this
is why, folks, this is why I get pretty upset
sometimes when it comes to certain nuances about the organization,
(01:57):
how they treat certain people they're alumni, what they do
to their park, what they need to do to honor
the past greates, things like that. So I gave you
those two lineups, and it's they're really strong. I'm not
(02:17):
knocking them. I'm asking for an open mind, which can
be difficult sometimes. I mean, I tweeted that out about
Javier Bayez the other day, and I tweeted out about
how he is. He's a guy who if you're willing
to get all on board with how good Spencer Torkosen
has been and Zach McKinstry, then you've got to be
(02:40):
willing to accept that Javier Bayaz has been pretty good too.
Doesn't mean he's going to stay that way. When one
for four last night with a couple of strikeouts, so
nothing special there either, But so far, you know, he's
been pretty damn good. And he had a double last
night at his sixth double of the year, and the
(03:02):
only extravase since he's had of the year hasn't homered yet.
The double was a hustle double. How many times, Jared Kolnick,
have you seen a guy hit a ball and stand
and watch it and then wait, and then by the
time they get me up, they're thrown out at second base.
(03:23):
It's really well played ball off the left field wall
by Jose Altuve, good throw, bare handed, It wheeled through
to second on the money. Bay has beat it with
the head first slide a left handed leaning on the bag,
swam his right arm away. But he did it by
charging out of the box. Good for him, that's awesome.
(03:48):
I'm happy for him. You should be too. This is
one of those ones where you hope you're wrong. It's
pretty hard to prove it's wrong, considering he's had a
few years here that have been just terrible. But let's
stay in a moment and give him credit. I think
you should. I got all kinds of pushback on that
he's not a leader, he's showing a bad example for players.
(04:12):
My response is, how's he showing a bad example when
he's willing to play center field, play third base after
winning a Gold Glove at shortstop. Players like him, respect him,
they do enjoy him as a teammate. You want to,
you're not going to convince people. We've got people who
have never been in that clubhouse. Never talk to a player.
They're going to know more than me. Okay, that's fine.
(04:37):
When it comes to the Tiger's history, it is worth
noting how deep it goes. If you lined up the
best of the best, tell me the Tigers all time
roster or starting unit wouldn't be as good as what
(04:58):
I just gave you for the Yankees in the So
you ready, now, this is just my version, doesn't mean
I'm right. You can alter it how you see fit.
I got Hank Greenberg at first base, he's a Hall
of Fame player. I got Charlie Garringer at second base.
He's a Hall of Fame player. I got Alan Trammel
(05:21):
at shortstop, he's a Hall of Fame player. I got
George Kell at third base. He's a Hall of Fame player.
There's a theme here, okay. I got al Caline in
right field. He's a Hall of Fame player. Ty Cobbin center,
Hall of Fame player Harry Heilman, and left Hall of
(05:43):
Fame player Bill Freehand. At Catcher, eleven time All Star,
five time Gold Glove arguably could be a Hall of
Fame player. But not everybody on the Yankees roster and
that Red Sox roster are either. Dustin Pedroy is not
Cooper's down, Miguel Caber is the DH He will be
(06:08):
a Hall of Fame player first ballot. There's going to
be some moron who won't vote for him, but we're
used to that by now. Right handed pitcher I got
Justin Verlander. He's going to be a Hall of Fame player.
And left handed pitcher I got Hel Neuwhauser, He's a
Hall of Fame player. I'm not telling you it's better.
(06:31):
I'm telling you it's as good. And I think when
people look at that, I think when they look at
the Tigers, I don't think they always recognize some of
their past grades. Perhaps too many are in black and
white photos. You know, maybe you think Kel and Heilman
(06:51):
and Cobb and Greenberg, it's too old school. I'm just
remind you when people look at the New York Yankees
and they see what they have done, okay, and they
see some of those names, the Mantles, the russ Demaggio's,
the Garigs, Diogi Bera, a lot of black and white
(07:11):
photos there, Jimmy Fox, Ted Williams. There's some black and
white photos on the Boston side as well. And there
are guys, as I mentioned, not in the Hall of
Fame no more. Garciapar is not in the Hall of
Fame and he's not going to be in the Hall
of Fame. Robinson Cano is not in the Hall of Fame.
(07:32):
He's not going to be in the Hall of Fame.
Alex Rodriguez isn't in the Hall of Fame. He's not
going to be in the Hall of Fame. In all likelihood.
The Tarts got one guy, and at least in my
lineup anyway, it might change who's not in the Hall
of Fame Bill Freehand, and he was one of the
best defensive catchers of all time. Just food for thought,
(07:57):
that's all. I'm just trying to give you an idea
of the history of the franchise. Not that you didn't.
I'm sure some people would go immediately they think first base, Well,
it's got to be Miguel Cabrera use them as the DH,
because who are you going to play at third? I
originally thought about having Cabrera at third base and using
the DH for Low Whittaker, or moving low Whittaker to
(08:18):
third base since he played third base in the minor leagues,
and keeping Cabrera at DH. Anyway, I thought it was
an interesting tweet last night and might be stirring up
some emotions and some thoughts from you as well.
