Speaker 1 (00:00):
Where do you go for Ireland's biggest conversations, insightful answers,
fastest updates and sharpest daytimes.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Good morning, good morning, and our hour good day.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Well over a million of you go to Ireland's number
one radio station, Artie Radio one. Listen now on Arte
Radio Player. So I hurt my hip at the gym
and ended up at PHI Urgent Care.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
They really took care of me. They referred me to one.

Speaker 4 (00:26):
Of their physios and while working on my core, the
physio noticed I was walking a little oddly, so she
refers me to a VHI pediatrist and he was able.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
To help me correct my gait.

Speaker 4 (00:38):
So, yeah, it was. It was really great how VHI
was able to connect.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
All the dots.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
VHI because your health means everything.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Well, that was sobering, wasn't it? As much as you
get fired up, as much as you have to wait,
the anticipation builds, expect four o'clock first pitch, it doesn't
come till after seven. You're in your seats, you're fired up,
you get a clean first in and you're thinking. Jack
Flaherty has done a really good job against some good teams.

(01:11):
He was really good against Cleveland we warned you Seattle's
lineup is longer, we warned you that Seattle's starting pitching
is much better, and now Detroit's on the brink of elimination.
It's not a huge surprise for me. It's more disappointing
that the validation of this lineup and the weakness of

(01:35):
what has become the Detroit Tigers over the last month
or so is rearing its ugly head yet again in
the playoffs. It's also disappointing that fans don't get the
opportunity to actually cheer. I mean, that was as quiet
a home playoff game as perhaps many people have ever experienced.

(01:58):
Right is a morgue, That's what it felt like. There's
just so much frustration. As a friend of mine said
last night, I've never seen a more boring playoff game
in my life. Maybe a little hyperbolic. Detroit loses tol

(02:23):
eight to four, and the Mariners are now within a
win of reaching the ALCS. Three of the Tigers, or
i should say three of the mariners eight hits left
the yard. It's not like they hit the ball all
over the yard. They just used their power. And that's
kind of what we have said for a long time.

(02:44):
As much as you may not like it, as much
as I may prefer guys who can set that table.
It's been about home runs. If you've watched any of
the FS one pregame show, that's what they were talking about.
Tom Verducci was mentioning that Ken Rosenthal mentioned it for
the Yankees in Blue Jay's preview. It's about hitting the

(03:05):
ball over the wall. It's about getting your extra base hits.
That's what happens, that's what's needed. A JOHANNEO Suarez JP,
JP Crawford of all people and cal Raley go deep.
Logan Gilbert was he was a better than Jack flaherty man.
I mean, toss six hitnings, allowing one run, four hits,

(03:27):
struck out seven. Surprised that Dan Wilson pulled him, Surprised
that Dan Wilson went with his before he went to
his closer. I didn't I didn't quite understand how long
you're going to leave a guy in, Caleb Ferguson, how
long you're going to leave him in before he can
find his his stuff. To me, that made no sense whatsoever.

(03:53):
It allowed Detroit to get back into it. You know,
he didn't register it out he gave up three hits
and three runs. I was a little surprised he went
with four relievers after Logan Gilbert, who I thought was
in pretty good shape. I think he threw eighty five
pitches and six innings. I was thinking to myself, Okay,

(04:14):
he'll probably give him one more inning. He chose to
go to his bullpen. I thought it was a mistake.
It ended up being okay for them. Jack Flaherty, how
much earlier are you going to go? Then the three
and a third where he gives up four hits, three runs,
three earned runs, four runs. Overall, the defense wasn't great obviously.

(04:39):
I mean, do you blame the Riley Green throwing error
on Green or Dylan Dingler when it went through his legs?
You can blame me the one. It doesn't really.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
Matter, but you don't blame it on McKinstry at all.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Either one would be fine, you know. On McKinstry.

Speaker 4 (04:59):
Yeah, blame it on him. He was the cutoff guy
and just let it go. That's what they were saying
on the broadcast at least.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Oh yeah, but you can't give him an error on
that though.

Speaker 4 (05:09):
No, I know I understand that I was blame him.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
No, I was referring to the error. I was referring
that the error was given to Green. So I said,
are you willing to give the air to Green or
Dilan Dingler who let it roll between his legs and
then the air by Carpenter and right field? Yeah, I
mean the mckinstreet. I get it. That's what they said
on the broadcast. Cut that off, keep the guy at

(05:32):
first base. That's usually I'm not saying it is here.
That's usually a call by the catcher. Yeah, are you
letting it go or are you cutting it off? Is
that really on Zach McKinstry to cut it off? If
Dylan Dingler's not saying anything and asking him in by
nonverbal communication to let it go, So that's the thing

(05:57):
that needs to be asked and answered. I'm not sure
sure about that. Yeah, that's fair.

Speaker 4 (06:01):
It's just in real time, in real time. Ship I was,
I was blaming it, and I'm the kinstry in real time.
But I don't know if that's you can't give him
the error? So I get it.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Yeah, Yeah, that's that would be more of a mental
error if it is. Indeed, I mean, I'm not going
to blame Zach McKinstry. If Dylan Dingler's telling him or
not telling him to cut it, right, and we don't, Zach,
Zach McKinstry's got his back to the home plate. You
don't just cut that for the sake of cutting it.
Usually there's some communication there, somebody's telling you cut it.

(06:33):
Then you throw it a second base and make sure
you cut the rundown or the advanced runner down. Either way,
it was a mess, right, you would admit that, absolute
mess for sure. This was, or this has been my
issue for a while. I think if you've listened to
this show, you know that that I'm not comfortable with

(06:55):
Detroit's defense and have not been. I like Carry Carpenter
a lot. He brings an awful lot to the lineup.
He's proven that time and time again. He's not a
good defensive freight fielder. I'm not saying that's an easy
play either, the way that ball comes at you, the
way it's banana and he's trying to run it down.

(07:16):
But a major league player should make that client man,
I mean, there's just no excuse for it. I'm sorry.
So I'm not a big believer in this team's defense.
I wasn't before the season began. This is not piling on.
I wasn't before the season began. I liked left field,
I liked center field, and that's about it. I mean,
you could talk about Almago all you want. With Javier Baiez,

(07:38):
some of the throwing. JP Crawford had a throwing air
last night. I thought it was a bad throw when
it should have been a double play a lobby Detroit's
first run. Things are going to happen like that, but
for Detroit for most part. Right now, I want you
to think about it for a minute. This is what
I was contemplating last night. In what area do you
feel most comfortable with this team? It's defense, it's offense.

(08:05):
I don't know, it's starting pitching, it's relief pitching. The
answer is not even in the question. The answer is one,
it's one guy you feel comfortable with. Actually, Spencer Toroklsin's
played pretty well, don't you think, yeahah, he's had some moments. Okay.
I don't know if there are enough moments for it

(08:26):
to burn into people's brains. Because he was one for
four last night. I don't know if it's enough for
people to say to themselves, you know what I've come
around on this guy because nobody's hitting well, do you
know what he's hitting in the playoffs. He's hitting a
buck eighty two, and he's the guy that we bring
up ironic, isn't it? Yeah? For example, Ridley Green said

(08:50):
in two sixty one, nobody's gonna bring that up anyway.
Bottom line is, you don't feel comfortable with any aspect
of what this team is doing right now except for
when Terrek School's on them out. That's the only thing
you're clinging to right now. You're going if we can
somehow squeeze one out today, at least we get Schooble
in game five, and I feel good we can win.

(09:14):
That's the belief. That's why there is such a massive
letdown in game two. Right can you do it today?
Casey Mives says, this is what you dream of as
a kid. He's going to get the opportunity eight for
the final last night in favor of Seattle.

Speaker 1 (09:32):
