Brought to you by Heineken zero zero, Get the facts,
be drink aware?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Is it drinkaware?

Speaker 4 (00:24):
Dot Ie?

Speaker 5 (00:25):
He claims he brought the mullet back. His short shorts
are a bit too short and he's nowhere to be
found when it's his round.

Speaker 4 (00:33):
There's my Heineken zero zero.

Speaker 5 (00:35):
But he's our best mate and even though he's always
banging on about stasts completion, there's no one we'd rather
watch the match to the sports that bring us together,
Heineken zero zero.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
It's a football Friday, and if you've been listening to
the show this football season, you know that on Fridays
we're joined by Lions analyst Rob Rubick. Every It's What's
Brewing with Rooves to talk all things Lions. Rooves. How
are you this morning?

Speaker 4 (01:06):
I'm doing great.

Speaker 6 (01:07):
I'm in the up, been bird hunting for a few
days and heading back down south today, and it's always
kind of a sad.

Speaker 4 (01:13):
Moment for me.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Did you get anything, Yes.

Speaker 4 (01:16):
We did.

Speaker 6 (01:16):
We We've got a few. We scared a lot of them.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Very nice. That's a good haul. Better than sitting out
there and you know, being bored to death. I think
the biggest question with the Lions right now is just
the lack of depth at corner for these next couple
of weeks. What's your update on Terry and Arnold, DJ Reid?
Any of these guys coming back anytime soon?

Speaker 4 (01:35):
No, I don't believe.

Speaker 6 (01:37):
So, you know, I haven't followed as closely sometimes as
I have with the injury report.

Speaker 4 (01:42):
I just know this.

Speaker 6 (01:43):
It could come a good time for Terry Arnold because
he's been struggling a little bit and for him to
maybe get a break, kind of recalibrate, look at things,
get a fresh look, and you know, take a week
or so off, it might help him in the long run.
As as DJ, I don't know, but that's gonna hurt.
I mean, as you said, depth, But here's a problem
the NFL trend. You can't have depth everywhere. People say,

(02:03):
oh they need to build depth. They need to build depth.
It's a fifty three man roster, and that fifty three
men roster you have you have punters, kickers, specialists who
aren't football players, but they still got to be on
your team. So you can't have great depth everywhere. And
that's really what hurt this team last year is the
injuries They had a defensive end because it wasn't like
they spread their injuries around and that seems to be

(02:24):
happening again. It's like when this team gets hit with injuries,
it's all in one spot. Well, you can't have you know,
ten corners that are good to play, that can cover.
So if you get hit that sometimes you got to
bite the bullet. You see the egos last night. I
mean they're facing that a little bit right now. This
year they're kind of beat up a little bit on
that defense. They got a bunch of new players as well.
All of a sudden, the Giants looked like the Lions

(02:46):
you know the last year. Offensively, they moved up and
down the field on them. So it's a I don't know, Yeah,
it's going to hurt them, it is, but it's everyone
goes through it.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Yeah, something you hope you can manage. You do still
have a me and Robertson. They did go out and
get Treyflower, so they're making moves to at least try
to put themselves in the best position here. And let's
not forget Rubs. They've got the best safety duo in
all of football, so maybe those guys can pick up
some of that slack on the back end as well.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
Yeah, I like our safeties.

Speaker 6 (03:15):
They're different, but they bring to the table. With Kirby,
you get great range, great coverage in the deep passing game.
He's not a physical safety exactly. But on the other side,
you do. You have the reincarnation of Benny Blades. You
have Brian Branch who's very physical, very strong, sometimes a
little bit too aggressive, and sometimes you can get lost
in coverage. He's not the best man cover guy, but

(03:38):
his assets definitely a weigh his liabilities. He's a leader,
he's physical, he brings a lot to the table. In
the middle of the field is a tough place, and
you play the Lions because of these two safeties they
have whether you're throwing or trying to intermediate short game
or trying to get over the top.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
So you get the Chiefs. This week. It is a
short week for the Chiefs. How much, if at all,
do you put stock into that. You get the Chiefs
after they played on Monday night, and they themselves are
dealing with some injuries and actually are a two and
three ball club right now.

Speaker 6 (04:06):
Yeah, as far as preparation on a short week of
six days for the Chiefs, I don't put any stock
in it. But as far as injuries, a little bit.
It's still early in the year, so you know, this
is the game week fifteen. It's a lot different because
of people are really nicked and beat up. So yeah,
but the Lions are dealing with injuries too, whether it's
a short week or a long week. Some of these
injuries aren't coming back, whether it's six days or sixteen days.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
So maybe a little big is a little bit of help.

Speaker 6 (04:31):
Obviously, Vegas doesn't think so because their lines are two
and a half point dog against his Chiefs team. So
it's I don't know. I really put a lot of
stock in the trend. I think they'll be fine. Chiefs
will be ready. Andy Reid's outstanding coach. Patrick Mahome is
still the best quarterback in football. YEP. And they know
Travis Kelsey's a little bit of a shell of what
he once was, but he's still He is smart, and

(04:52):
he's a veteran can. He works a great and small spaces.
He knows how to get open to use his body.
And they get two very solid running backs. So that's
a team offensively that still presents problems to you. And
they start to get some of their speedback, you know,
hopefully not I know is Rice playing this week? I'll
ask you this because I've been in the sticks.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
I actually haven't seen. I'll look that up when I
ask you this next question. But I noticed a little
bit when they played Baltimore. They spied Lamar Jackson a
little bit. And what these quarterbacks I like to run?
Do you think they'll spy my Holmes or will they
respect his arm a little bit more?

Speaker 6 (05:25):
Oh see, he's a little different animal than Lamar. He
doesn't run nearly as much or quite as well, but man,
he's deceiving when he scrambles. He kind of runs with
Aaron Rodgers. Yousue because people always underestimate how fast Aaron
Rodgers was because he was he wasn't like like super
shape quick fast, but he rolled out the pocket. He

(05:46):
never got walked down from behind. You remember by the
defensive ends or linebackers never caught him, and he was
able to extend plays and just present all kinds of problems.
Because at that level, if you can extend to play
the five six seconds, you're going to find someone open.
And the great ones like him and Patrick Mahomes, they
will hurt you. I don't know, if you commit to that,
you might start, you know, you look at Calvin Shepherd,
the DC might start with, Okay, we're going to place

(06:08):
his own and maybe keep an eye on Patrick. But
if he's not running and taken off, and if the
defensive front does a good job constricting the pocket like
they did against the Ravens, well, then all of a
sudden they maybe started to playing man. But boy, you
play Patty Mahomes man, I sort of the lord. He
looks so as he drops back, he sees that man coverage,
he knows everyone's running away, and he'll look for lane
and take off and run on you.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
He's just really good. He's going to make plays.

Speaker 6 (06:30):
That's what you know, and I'm sure that's what Calvin
Shepherd tellings even listen. He's going to make some big plays,
big throws big runs. We just have to limit them.
We can't give him ten, we can give him three
or four, and hopefully the offensive lines are so good
that they will make and cover up for that.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
To answer your question, it looks like Raci Rice is
out one more week, so the Lions will not have
to deal with Reshi Rice.

Speaker 6 (06:50):
I hope he gets healthy after this week.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Yeah right, you wish them all the best, just not
against your team. I want to ask you this because
I think and by the way, what's ruined with Rubs?
Rod By Ferris coffee deun blend, delicious, terrific stuff, gets
it going in the morning, gets you fired up, like
Dan Campbell fan.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
Well, I'm a Farris Coffee Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Good stuff, great stuff, good nuts too. Am I crazy
for thinking that Dan Campbell stacks up pretty well against
Andy Reid? I mean, I know Andy Reid has the rings,
He's got the pedigree, but I think Dan Campbell has
earned just as much respect, if not more, at this
point in his career and in Andy Reid's career as well.

Speaker 6 (07:26):
So you're asking me, how does Dan Campbell stack up
against Andy Reid? Yeah, well, it's like this, how is
I'm and Rob the Saint Brown stack up against Larry Fitzgerald.
It's not just being talented having success, it's what longevity.
And Andy Reids had longevity. I mean he's proven, he's
put out a great product there that are just the Eagles.
I mean we're using Green Bay they were very successful too.

(07:47):
And now with this kanc City team. So is he
Andy Reid? No?

Speaker 4 (07:51):
Is he trending? Yeah?

Speaker 6 (07:52):
I mean he's what he's done in along with his
with Brad Holmes in Detroit is almost on parallel. And
he took a gutter team. I'm team that for twenty years.
I mean Matthew Stafford, God love him. You know, he
took a shot every day every week. He was getting
his butt whooped because this was a bad football team
for many years and we really squandered some really talented superstars.

Speaker 4 (08:13):
But now that what.

Speaker 6 (08:14):
They've done building a team and build an inside out
is really nice and Dan Campbell's kind of benefiting from it.
But what Dan brings, I'm not sure Andy has. Dan's
a former NFL player and I'm nothing you have to
be as an NFL coach, but it brings a different dimension.
Players can respect his instant credibility and he puts himself
on the line, you know, kind of emotionally with his team.

(08:35):
He throws it out there. You watch his postgame pregame.
I think they really like to play for him now,
whether his ex's and o's during the game, his game management,
his clock management is with Andy Reid. I would say
probably not just because of lack of experience, but in
time he could be. But let's not you know, let's
not crown him king yet. These you know, Andy Reid's
got some rings and a lot of success in his past.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
Yeah, you don't want to jump the gun. Don't want
to crown a guy pretty much earlier put that type of.

Speaker 6 (09:00):
Way on his might just say he's trending. Yeah, he's
trending to.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
The Hall of Fame some safety.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Yeah, and I'm sure all Lions fans would love if
he makes it some day because that probably means you
want a Super Bowl as some Yeah, so absolutely something
to watch. All right, Rooves, We're at the quarter pole
the season, and I just want your early I think
I know where you're going to go with this, but
I want your early season impressions of both the new coordinators,
because all we heard in the offseason was you know
how affected the Lions are going to be by the

(09:27):
losses of Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn. What do you
what's your take at the quarter pole the season on
Johnny Morton and Kelvin Shepard.

Speaker 6 (09:35):
Well, the way Johnny Moore was able to transition being
a great receiver for the Lions along with Herman more No,
just kidding John Morton.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Some people probably aren't confused about that and name. But
I first heard I think, really gamo, Yeah, I thought
that guy looked different.

Speaker 6 (09:49):
No, I had no concern tobou Johnny Morton. I'll tell
you why, because he's when that trained Ben Johnson. I mean,
you see he still uses the I would say gadget
plays or trick plays, but he has very very creative
plays in his offense, just like Ben Johnson. And everyone
knows crowded Ben King and he's doing well. I mean,
he's get this turn in the team around. It's pretty
talented in Chicago. But he's okay. No, no concerns ever,
and Johnny Morton's fine. We're clicking a game where highest

(10:11):
scoring team in football again, and so I don't think
they missed a beat offensively. But what I was concerned
about is Calvin Shepherd. He has never been in that role.
He's never that responsibility. He never had to manage a defense,
and we saw it a little bit maybe in the
first game against Green Bay. I thought he played way
too much man against a team that is built to
beat man coverage. They have four or five receivers that
are all kind of cookie cutters.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
They're all similar size.

Speaker 6 (10:33):
Very quick, good, good route runners, and they kind of
ate up Detroit's defense with that offense. So but he's
learned since and he's mixing in more zone. He's still
playing some man and he's learning his personnel. You know,
you think you know your personnel, but you don't until
it gets the crunch time and you see them in
the real regular season and so forth. You can watch
them in camp, you can watch them in scrimmages and camp,

(10:55):
but it's not the same. So I think Calvin has
really improved a lot. I really like his trajectory because
he's learning. He's like a raptor, you know, they say
Jurassic Park. He's learning, and that's what you see him doing.
And I think his defense is coming along now. They
got to keep healthy bodies on the field.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
If we zoom out big picture, especially after what we
saw last night on Thursday Night Football. I'm not sure
if you were able to watch up north, but the
Eagles got pounded. They got doubled up by a Giants
team that no one thought was going to be very
good this year as a rookie at quarterback, right so
it could be troubling paradise for Philly. Is it fair
to say that both Detroit and Tampa have the right

(11:32):
to an argument as the best team in the NFC
right now?

Speaker 6 (11:38):
Yeah, you could argue who's the best team in NFC?
The Bay life doesn't matter right now. There's no playoffs point.
You know you're not getting the playoff game right now.
But who's playing as well right now?

Speaker 4 (11:47):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (11:48):
I think the Lions are playing as well as anyone
right now in the NFC. You know, Egos are struggling.
Let's not forget remember last year they started to own
two or one and two or something in the beginning everything. Oh,
there's troubling paradise. Then they won like seventeen or eight
team games in a row until they started losing again
this year. So I think Nick Siriano does a good
job of writing a ship. Not a huge fan of him,
watching his personality and stuff, but he must be doing

(12:10):
a good job now. They have talent, but they're beat up.
So I don't think it's a fair assessment of the
Eagles right now. But yeah, I think the Lions and
another there's the NFC is loaded. I think the NFC
is way better than the FCS for depth of good teams.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
I agree, and that hasn't been the case the last
few years, but this year I totally agree.

Speaker 6 (12:28):
Well, you know, Baltimore obviously went off the rails. I mean,
they're done. Put a fork in them. They couldn't stop them.
The Bury High School in.

Speaker 4 (12:35):
The drive struggling. But I'll talk about the NFC.

Speaker 6 (12:41):
I think I think Green Bay is a good team.
You know, people were all high in green Bay the
Super Bowl champs coming up, and then they was, oh,
they're not as good as bad. Well they're gonna it's
gonna level alone. They're gonna be Goody're gonna be there
in the end. They may win the division. Green Bay Minnesota.
Minnesota's McCarthy when he's playing, wasn't a McCarthy they're hoping
to get.

Speaker 4 (12:59):
I think.

Speaker 6 (13:00):
So they're okay with Carson Wentz right now. But Carson's
proven over time that you know, he can stizzle and
burn out quickly too. So I don't know. And the Bears,
our team, that's going to be scary line, you're gonna
lose games. They're going to I said before this season
trip that they're gonna be eleven and eleven and six,
but be better than they were at fifteen and two.
If you get that, because their schedule is much more

(13:21):
difficult and they won some games last year. They're not
gonna win all the time. You know, I'm gonna say lucky,
but you know, lucky, they got some games. So they
give me eleven and six and that could win the
division because when you have four teams that can all
beat each other and within the division, eleven wins might
win that division. But I still think there's gonna be
two or maybe three playoff.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
Teams out of there. So I have no idea. If
I answered your question.

Speaker 6 (13:44):
No, you did, you did, ram but On, but hopefully
I did.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
No, you absolutely didn't. You're you're right, it's a no
brainer that eleven and six and win in a playoff
games better than going fifteen and two and then but.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
The Bucks are good. I love Baker.

Speaker 6 (13:55):
Yeah, I'm a huge Baker.

Speaker 4 (13:57):
May I always have it.

Speaker 6 (13:58):
I had actually a couple of years ago saying you're
actually last year, I said I would trade it for
Jared Goff heads up, because he is the type of
quarterback that succeeds the NFL now with the offensive line
and the type of offensive lines have, Jared succeeds extremely well,
and he's as good as anybody.

Speaker 4 (14:12):
But if we get beat up.

Speaker 6 (14:13):
On that offensive line where a quarterback can't sit in
that cocoon and throw the ball around, I'd rather have
a mobile quarterback. And the Baker's a fighter competitor.

Speaker 4 (14:21):
I like him.

Speaker 6 (14:22):
I love Jared though, so I have no problem keeping
Jared Goff, but we just got to make sure we
keep that offensive line healthy and protecting him because if
you do that, he will slice and dice you.

Speaker 4 (14:31):
Now.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
Yeah, last thing for you, because I think we would
both agree unless you disagree that the Packers are probably
the biggest threat to the Lions in this division, and
coming off the loss of the Browns, they tie the
Cowboys and then have their bye week. As a player,
would that bother you or would you want to get
that bad taste out of your mouth right away.

Speaker 6 (14:51):
Yeah, the Packers, as you said, you know, they had
the loss against the Browns, which is a really good
defense on the road. And I'm you know, I'm not
saying you take him lightly because as a player, I
never took anyone lightly.

Speaker 4 (15:01):
But I didn't. I wasn't good enough to take anyone lightly.

Speaker 6 (15:04):
I think the Packers might have went in there thinking,
but just can we can play Okay, we can get
away with a win. And you know, it was a
perfect storm. So things went bad at the end of
the game. That don't happen very very often against the Packers.
And then the Cowboys, We're starting.

Speaker 4 (15:16):
To see it. That's a pretty good offense.

Speaker 6 (15:18):
I got a buddy of mine here with me right
now who's a Packer fan up at my place. We were
bird hunting together. But he's a good Packer fan. He
sees the warts on the Packers unlike a lot of
Packer fans, and we were talking a little bit, and
they're going to be fine. They're going to be a
good team. They have too many good players as well.
I mean, Jordan Love has a really good skill set.
I think he's not a mature quarterback.

Speaker 4 (15:37):
Yet.

Speaker 6 (15:38):
But let's not forget he doesn't have two full seasons
yet of being the starting quarterback in the NFL. People
forget he's been around for three.

Speaker 4 (15:44):
Or four playing. But he got hurt.

Speaker 6 (15:46):
You know, when you look at how many starts he
has and finishes, it's not a ton. It's not like
he's a five or six year guy. If that was
the case, I started to be questioning, saying, well, maybe
he's not the answer, but I think he's going to
be fine.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
Yeah, and.

Speaker 6 (15:59):
The bear scared me, Scott. If you look at weapons offensively,
they pretty much if anyone in the conference, they can
go blow for blow with the Lions. The difference with
the Lions is that the two tackles that we have
that no one else in our conference has. When you
have Decker, you put a Decker in a piney seol.
All of a sudden, Jared Goff becomes a really good
quarterback because you can keep them clean.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
Rob Rubick joining us for the weekly What's Bruin with
Rooves Chat, brought to you by Ferris Coffee Roofs. Before
I let you go, I got to get your game.
Pick the Chiefs who wins to win?

Speaker 4 (16:30):
I really do I.

Speaker 6 (16:33):
Think the Chiefs are getting better, and if Rice was there,
it'd be different animal, but I think they'll be fine.
I think Kelvin Sheppard after facing Baltimore, has a better
idea how to face a real mobile quarterback. Now Lamar Jackson,
I know he's won two MVPs and stuff, but I
think if you have thirty two gms, who do you want,
Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson? They'd probably take Patrick still,
and Lamar's a really good player, so I think they

(16:54):
kind of got the formula a little bit. I don't
think they'll put the same formula in place so I
did the Lions.

Speaker 4 (16:58):
We're not. Think it gonna be close and copetitive, and.

Speaker 6 (17:00):
The chief defens is pretty sound, but I think Line's win.
I think it's gonna be like a twenty seven to
twenty three game.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
I think everyone would take that in a heartbeat.

Speaker 6 (17:09):
Rob.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
I'm glad you got away for a little bit. I'm
glad you had some fun up there with your buddies,
even though they're packers fans, save travels the rest of
the way home and enjoy the weekend.
