Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we're back here at Matthews Zorina. Delaware starts off
the year with an eighty to seventy seven loss against Northeastern,
and we're gonna talk with our head coach, Martin Englesby
into an interview presented by Acme Acme, your favorite local supermarket,
and Martin, that's conference basketball. I mean, that's league basketball.
That's what to expect when you get in the league play.

(00:20):
That was a battle eighty to seventy seven. You guys
were fighting an uphill climb the entire way. You were
able to to climb that hill down the stretch with
some timely defensive stops and some makes, but ultimately Northeastern
wins it by three. Just before we dive into the action,
just your thoughts on the way your team battled back
after being down fifteen to the second half.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Yeah, I mean they showed a lot of resiliency, a
lot of toughness in the second half. I mean, our
defense was not very good in the first half, but
we fought and battled in the second half to give
ourselves a chance. We got down fifteen I think early
in the second half, and we stayed together. We catch
chipping away and you know, we gave ourselves a chance.
I think there's some really good things that we did
on the defensive end in the latter part of the

(01:01):
second half. We had some opportunities down the stretch to
maybe extend the lead after we battled back and took
a one point lead, but just unfortunately not able to
get it done. And you know, tough execution on that
last play. I thought, now, it's had a really good
drive to get to the basket, but you know, resilient performance.
We're disappointed we did not get it done. We battled,

(01:21):
We showed a lot of grittiness in the second half
to be able to keep staying in the game, staying connected.
We rode those five guys for twenty minutes in the
second half, and I thought, to get it got into
a good flow. I mean, because some new guys out there,
guys learning conference play on the road. As you know,
it's hard as heck to win games, and hopefully we
can take the good from this and be ready to
go home and get the one to one.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Let's talk about that final offensive possession. You got the
ball in the hands of your best driver. Was that
the design in there? I mean, I was laying got
to look at it. He did.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
I mean, I'd like to go back and look at it,
but he had the five man on him. We thought
there was goough to be able to get downhill. We
had shooters in both corners. Just I think he left
it a little short, but I thought he had a
good just unfortunately didn't convert.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
About switch things up defensively. You went zone a bit
in the second half, and when you did, you got
three turnovers in a row. You started to battle back.
What were your thoughts on the way you guys were
able to make some changes in the second half defensive.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Yeh, but we're gonna need it. You know. I thought
there were some possessions we did well, possessions The kid
Frankel made I think two threes against it. He gave
a big minutes off the bench. But you know, we
got to continue to keep working at it in practice
and we're going to continue to use it and try
to be better at it. But we're gonna need to
be able to shift gears a little bit when maybe
our man isn't as good as it needs to be.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
We know rebounding was going to be a challenge in
this basketball game at one point. The discrepancy on the
offensive lass was twenty to one, end up being twenty
two to six. And I know this is going to
be a battle probably year long. You're gonna you're gonna
struggle because of some of the height differentials in league
play and uh, just the roster build up. But what

(02:53):
do you look at in this game that devil where
maybe could have done better on the offensive on defensive lass.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Yeah, I think that's number one. I mean, I think
it comes down to positioning fights. You know, some of
those ones. We got a lot of blue jerseys standing
around and watching, and somebody's got to be able to
go rebound the basketball. No excuses there they had. I
don't know how many. You know, if we rebound the
ball better in the second half, you know, you felt
like you were down twenty five points, but you're only
down ten points. And you know, we could have stole
this one tonight and we only led for twenty six seconds,

(03:18):
but we could have stole it if we did one
or two things a little better. You know, we were
locking in fighting on the defensive, and I think we
did do a better job playing without fallon a couple
timely or you know, untimely fouls that let guys get
to the fallon and get some easy buckets. I also
thought we missed a couple of free throws that could
have extended the lead at key times for us. But
you know, we're gonna have to fight and call and

(03:40):
scrap and and everybody's gonna get a chance. And everybody
got a chance early in the game, and we rode
the guys that we felt we're gonna give usselves a
chance to win the game.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
One of those guys was Trent Middleton Junior. I thought
this was his best game as the Blue Hen, certainly
the most minutes as a Blue Hen. Twelve points, he
had five assists, He only had one turnover in the game,
and was able to just out there for extended periods
of time.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Your thoughts on Trent, Yeah, I thought he gave us
a good minutes. I mean without with Calvin down and then
Toront's not available. You know, we were going to go
with him off the bench. Kobe Jerones a little, you know,
dealing with the flu, so we were down three bodies,
and I thought he gave us a spark. I mean
he got to the basket, he's creating. Thought he was
pretty solid at times on the defensive end. He's a
competitive kid, he's a Philly kid. His toughness about him.

(04:23):
So hopefully we can continue to build off of this
night for him.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
Well, only nine turnovers a game, five of them though
from Isaiah Pasha. He's going to be a great point guard,
there is no doubt about that. But what does he
need to learn or maybe do better in a game
like this where it's tough, it's league play on some
of those turnovers?

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Yeah, I mean it's so important for us to be
able to value the basketball and especially from our point guards.
And Isaiah is so coachable, he's learning. I think there's
some youth there to him, just trying to process the
game and process offense and defense and coverages and sets
and entries and whatever we're trying to do. But you know,
he's gonna have a bright future for us, and he's

(05:00):
got to be able to watch, use and learn from
it and continue to be strong with the.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
Basketball challenging conference. Late as I think nine weeks in
a row ago Thursday Saturday, so quick turnarounds. Now you
got to get home from Boston and then you got
a home game on Saturday against Mommoth. It'll hit you
back to back in league plays. So I'm sure you'll
watch film, get better and get ready for it for
mom with on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Yep, that's the plans.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Thank Scott, all right, we'll talk to you then. Thanks
so much, coach, appreciate you making the climb up to
the drat Greynold Media Center up here as he always
is great about those postgame interviews, and we thank you
for tuning in tonight to start the new year. First
game of twenty twenty five doesn't go Delaware's way, but
it was a closely contested game. As a coach said,
there was a lot of grit, there was resiliency by Delaware.

(05:41):
You learn from it and you get better for a
Saturday against Mommoth. Because there's not a whole lot of
time to worry about this one. You've got a back
to back games are almost back to back Thursday Saturday.
It's Thursday Saturday for Delaware the rest of the season,
nine weeks in a row, Thursday Saturday for Delaware. That's
how we'll go
