(00:38):
this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
As well, But this hour it's all about your homes.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Jessica Smith from kim Drive Election It's going to join
us a little bit later on. We'll talk about their
process and why kim Drive Elecxingdon is different from what
you may be used to, especially if you're renting those
machines from the grocery store yuh Casey and Marcus from
Lifetime cabinists and countertops. It's well, we're counting down now,
justly days left in the two big summer sales, the

(01:02):
Court's sale that's the man made and of course the
Remnant sale going on through Labor Day weekend. We'll discuss
it and James Carl will drop by to chat about plumbing,
gas lines and more. He is the owner of Freedom Plumbing.
We get into way with a John and Kathy Fickner
leading us off this morning. Rock the Top reests surfacing.
Good morning to the both of you.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Morning Gary.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
All right, hope y'all are well on this fine Saturday morning.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah beautifully.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Wow for August, we could just keep this, but I
think we're getting a little bit warmer next next week.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
AnyWho, y'all were.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Telling me that before he came on the air that
one of the projects you've just been working on is
is actually renovating a camper.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
A camper, a camper yep, well do tell yees. So
lady calls up, She's like, see, I see, I see
you guys, do you know refinishing of countertops and tiles
and everything. Do you ever work in a camper? And
we actually have done work in a camper before, So
we went out, geestmate, They're like, heck, yeah, let's do
it all. She bought this camper for twelve thousand dollars.
Wasn't anything wrong with it. It was just ugly colors

(02:06):
in there, and yeah, yeah we gave them a price
and they're like, let's do it. Knocked it out in
one day and she fell in love. So what all
did you do with the camper? We did the kitchen countertops.
We did a vanity top and two dresser tops in
the back bedroom. Yep, not a lot in there, but

(02:27):
made a big difference. So she was very happy about that.
So well, we talked about so many different things you do.
This is what we thought about a camper. Yep. We
haven't talked about the gargoyles yet, old gargoyles. I haven't
done one yet, but I'm looking to. Well, you know,
if you all got a gargole you want done, yeah,
just holler. We did a well rock You know those

(02:48):
covers that you put out in your your yard. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
we did one of those and made it look like
Plymouth Rock. She came home, she I didn't even charge
her for that. I just did it because I'd not
done one of those yet. Okay, since you brought that
up Plymouth log, I've got to mention, have you ever
been to Plymouth Rock? No?

Speaker 1 (03:01):
No, As a kid, we were up that way and
I remember going and you know, you know how it
is when you you hear something and you're thinking wow, yes,
and then when you actually see this, like you're underwhelmed,
had that feeling. I remember being underwhelmed by Plymouth Rock,
you know, and I don't know today what it looks like,
but they had it in that you know, this this

(03:22):
cage around with you know, mitle like like it was
like it was a zoo thing, you know. Now you
kind of down a little dug out deep and it
was just as right. I don't know what I was expected.
I guess I was expecting more, but anyway, world famous.
The Plymouth rock you did on the whe cover could
have been bigger and more impressive than you so much.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
I should have put a cage around it.

Speaker 4 (03:42):
You could have.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
H Okay, so hey got a camper you want to
flip there you go.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Yeah, we could even do the iar on a camper too,
if so, repeating.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
It, What all surfaces did you do in that camper?
In that camper, we just did the kitchen countertops they
were they were for Micah, and then we did the
vantage top and they had two dresser tops in the bedroom. Yeah,
them all the same color.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
It's all built in so.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
Right, Yeah, you're not gonna rip these things out of
a camper. And that's all customs. That's that that would
be problematic, I'm sure, But even in your bathroom or
your kitchen at home, you don't have to rip anything
out either, unless you just want to change the layout.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Well that's right. Yeah, then we refer to that to
you know, one of our friends, one of the ones
you probably mentioned earlier. We know all those people. But you,
as long as you like the layout, you can give
it a whole brand new look with you. Just went
to a church this morning, actually that was my first
estimate this morning, and they had two old nineteen sixty
five year I was born bathrooms young. One was green

(04:46):
and the other one was blue. They had blue ceramic
tile floors, blue ceramic tile walls, blue vanity tops, a
blue toilet. The other one had a pink toilet. Boy,
that one was ugly, but I hope that was in
the women's room. To In short, it's like, what get
rid of that? People were shorter back then, yeah, lots
shorter short people.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
I had better knees, I guess.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
Yeah, I guess. But the craftsmen, there wasn't a single
broken tile in that. I couldn't even believe. It. Isn't
that the deal? I mean? Yeah, seriously, craftsmanship was wonderful
if you have an old bathroom or something yet, and
you're gonna be sorely disappointed if you rip everything out
and build a game, because it's not gonna probably last
as long as the original one is.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Correct, and it can be expensive.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Yeah, your pocket book's not going to be happy about
it either. Yeah. No, so no, we got in and
out of Uh well, we haven't done it yet, but
the estimate for both bathrooms was under six grand total.
So they're gonna say we're doing everything in these bathrooms,
both bathrooms. Everything, the walls, the floors, the seramic tile,
the walls. Yeah, the walls or tile walls or yep,
the tile walls. You have to come up about five feet,

(05:47):
you know, off the ground. Nothing wrong with them, they're
just ugly colors, jeez. So you don't have to tear
it all off the wall, Just resurface it. Save all
that time, all that money, save the landfills.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
It's waterproof, waterproof, easy to cleaner.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
No more croutline issues. You don't. She's like, we had
to seal these grout wins every year. We don't have
to do that anymore. Like no, ma'am, no, you don't
have to do that. So she can't wait.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
So what do you think is because years ago before
you started doing this, John, that that was what you did.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Yeah, not that everybody did do that, but you're supposed
to seal the ground, right, but but you you would
go in and do like total ripouts and redos and
all that. Yeah, that's what we used to do. Yeah.
But so I mean, your your best guess on this
particular project that you'll be able to do for under
six thousand dollars. We're both back what would it be
the other one twenty each? Twenty thousand each? Yep. So

(06:38):
they're saving them. They're gonna take all that savings and
they're gonna put it in their kitchen, got out all
the cabinets and put in a new floor. So wow,
saving them. So you've a like thirty four to thirty
five thousand dollars saved them that much? Yep.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
Okay, so that will be done in four days. So
your bathroom at home is probably not that big and
hopefully not that pink or blue, but you're you're not
real and enamored with it. It's you know, maybe sometimes
maybe notthing to the colors. It's just I guess over time,
things get kind of dingy.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Yeah, I can tell before when I get ten feet
away from the bathroom if if the bedroom the bathroom
doors open, I can tell if I'm getting that job,
just based down the color I see from the distance. Oh,
I love it already. I get really excited real quick
soon as I see that.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
What about we talk a lot about bathrooms. What about kitchens?
I mean you do a lot of those.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Two. Oh yeah, we're doing one actually right at this
very moment. My guys are doing a kitchen countertop and
the backsplash, and they're also doing a tub there today,
but not the kitchen. No. The tubs in the bathroom,
oh you never know. Yeah, they had a German shepherd.
They were washing their dog in there, he says, nail scratch,

(07:47):
the old tub ball up and everything. So and it
was yellowing too, the plastic tubs. They start turning yellow.
They don't, you know, start turning back to white again.
They just get more and more and more and more yellow.
That's the there's no reversing that, is there. Yeah, Yeah,
resurface resurface resurfacing. There's no reversing that. Right. You can
try all you want to. It ain't going back. Yeah,
and once we paint it white, whatever we're gonna you know,

(08:09):
color we're gonna paint it. I hate to use the
word paint because this you can't buy it Searan Williams.
But you know when we resurface it, whatever color we
go with, that's gonna stay of that color. Okay, let's
since you brought that up.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
So you go into a situation like that, into an
old yellow shower stall whatever. Okay, Yeah, we don't want
to give the impressure just going inwhere the code of
paint over this thing number one. It's not the kind
of paint you can buy it any any big box store.
But it's more than that. I mean, you're not just
going in and laying a code of something over.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Yeah, it's a sprayed with a kath. I'm sorry you're
not doing much talking now.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
The this the process is all yours.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Well, we go in with you know a lot of
processes yours. The money is hers. Yeah, she's the brains.
I'm the bron but uh, we go in with a
lot of equipment. I mean, we have to use HBLP machines.
That's a high vol low pressure system much like your
spraying like a motorcycle or a car, and the prepping
is ninety percent of it, really, and acid wash everything,

(09:11):
alkaline bath everything. It's just it's quite a process just
getting it ready to accept the epoxy primers and acrolic
pole of the ear thin top coats that we put on.
And I spend a year training people how to do
this before I ever let them go do it on
her own. I know a lot of people don't do that,
but I do. And yeah, we just love it. Saving
so much time and money. It's crazy. It's hard to

(09:33):
believe it will be the downside of somebody who went
in to do this but didn't know what they were doing.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
So I was actually just gonna say, hey, let's back
up a minute to the Harry Homer do it yourself kids,
they try it. We had a lady that did well
on a home depot tried to do her tile walls
and it became a mess, and so she called John
She's like, I need to try and get this stripped off.

(09:59):
Now have you do it properly? So that happens quite often, felt.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
Bad for business, so not something that you should try
on your own. Well, it's hard to describe all the radio,
but when you walked into that. I mean, what are
you what are you looking at here? What did this
d I y get? Actually, well, I'm doing. My price
is going to be double whatever I would normally charge.
I mean, I charged that.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
Much to strip it to and I don't want to
strip it. I'm not.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
She ended up getting most of it off because it
didn't stick. You know, it was Yeah, it was not,
it's not. She did say that she would work on
getting it removed, so she got most of it, and.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
She did a pretty good job, but she didn't prep
it right, so it didn't stick at all. And plus
the chemicals. She bought a home depot sorry no offense
to home depot, but she didn't bet any box big
buck store.

Speaker 5 (10:51):
Things.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
Kathy.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
So, so when people are calling you, guys, I've asked
this before, I know if they don't, that must have
some inkling about it as you do, or they wouldn't
be calling to begin with. But they don't have the
full the full manti here. I mean, you must get
some some questions all the time.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
Yeah, most of them are the process, and then I
explain typically what I overhear John explaining on the process.
Then afterwards a lot of people are like, how do
I care for this?

Speaker 2 (11:23):
Right?

Speaker 3 (11:23):
So they will be calling or texting me. I'm like, okay,
so this is simple. Use a antibacterial microfiber cloth and water.
If you want to use a cleanser if there's a
you know, some stains in the bottom of the tub
just from your feet being dirty. The manufacturer recommends four
O nine or fantastic, but any mild cleaner. You don't

(11:46):
need anything abrasive and it will come clean. I know
because we do our own.

Speaker 2 (11:50):
It's microbial, so antimicrobial, so you don't have to worry
about like mold growing on the stuff. It might grow
on the surface if you like go in there and
don't go in there for a month or two or whatever,
but it's not going to grow into the code, into
the grout lines are sealed and everything. It's amazing.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
You do need to clean it, though, because there's times
where people have called back and there's something going on
with us. Sometimes look, right, John gets there and it's
because they didn't clean it.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
It doesn't eat dirt, Okay, it's right, it's still got
it dirt, all right. So to get an estimate, and
I know you guys are very busy but I mean
typically you get people fairly quickly. Yeah, yeah, pretty quick
to get it. He hadn't asked them when to get
more information about Rock the Top reservice and how much money?
In time you can say, what do they need to do? Kathy?

Speaker 3 (12:34):
There you go to Rockthtopresurfacing dot com or then give

Welcome back into the Home Improvement Show of the Midlands
on one of the three point five FMN five sixty
A m w V O C and we say good
morning to Jessica Smith, Kim Dry Lexington. Good morning Jessica Smith,
if cave and drive Lexington.

Speaker 8 (14:41):
How are you.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
I'm doing pretty good? How about you?

Speaker 3 (14:43):
I'm all right, terrific.

Speaker 9 (14:45):
This is uh.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
I know we've talked about this before.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
This is kind of one of those times of the
year when you know, kids are back in school, and
you get a lot of your customers and a lot
of new folks who say, you know, all right, we
we got a little rugrats out of the house. Let's
get this thing cleaned up a little bit here.

Speaker 4 (15:01):
Yep.

Speaker 8 (15:01):
So the seasonal changes with the kids being back in school,
it's time to clean up the summer messes. But that's
also the holiday seasons just around the corner. So you
could schedule now to get your holidays before the holiday
party starts or even the decorations.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
That's a good idea. Go ahead and get on the
books now.

Speaker 8 (15:18):
For yeah, and that ways, because you know, clean up
those summer messes and all the kids being out about
working around schedules, there's more availability at this time for
the busy season starts.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
Okay, yeah, don't wait until you get to too close
to the holiday, which you know, why don't we say, well, gosh,
it's still August. Yeah, it somehow has a way of
getting here.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
Before you know.

Speaker 5 (15:42):
It.

Speaker 8 (15:43):
Doesn't sneak enough on you those holiday decorations or what
the fall decorations and Halloween stuff are.

Speaker 1 (15:49):
Oh yeah, give us a break, I mean, come on.
Although you do feel a little bit cooler when you
see them.

Speaker 3 (15:57):
That's a mind thing I got.

Speaker 2 (15:59):
Yeah, maybe that's what I don't.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
Know, but yeah, don't don't don't wait for the last minute, right,
go ahead and get that spot reserved right now. And
of course you guys are you do a recurring service,
So there are different levels depending on and basically it's
all tailored to what somebody wants how often they wanted
to have, not just the carpets, but other servicesan we'll

(16:21):
talk about that in a minute, but there're a variety
of different You pretty by said your own schedule, can't
you for the most part, yep.

Speaker 8 (16:26):
So we tailor tailor it to our customer's needs. Of course,
so we have carpet and upholstery, tile and grout cleanings,
you know for the shower stalls and everything else that
we can clean those really well. Because of our cleaning
process and the things that we have, we can tailor

(16:47):
it to the customer's needs. So basically, if you have
children and pets, or if it's just an elderly couple,
you know, if the area rugs get urine on it
need to be taken out of the home, or patio
cushions clean we can tailor all that to around the
season and the customer's needs.

Speaker 1 (17:05):
And yes, again you mentioned a number of things there
that you clean. I mean people think of it as
just carpets, and yeah, you do a lot of carpets.

Speaker 5 (17:13):
We do well.

Speaker 8 (17:13):
Keem Dry, you know, the chem dre brand, if you would,
has been in business for over thirty years and we
clean as a company over ten thousand homes worldwide every day,
every day, every day. And so that's why we can
tailor our cleanings to our customers. Of course, we have
a chem dra has a satisfaction guarantee. We use some

(17:37):
of the best equipment on the market with some of
the best formulated solutions.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
And that's the kim Drive difference is that that's the solution,
right yep?

Speaker 4 (17:46):
How is that?

Speaker 1 (17:46):
How is that different from what folks might expect or
what they may have experienced in the past with somebody else.

Speaker 4 (17:53):
Yep.

Speaker 8 (17:53):
So we use a patent solution that utilizes carbonation. So
carbonation isn't just for he drinks anymore. Our process uses
millions of tiny bubbles to penetrate carpet fibers, dissolve dirt
and stains quickly, and act as tiny propellants that actually
lift the dirt from the surface for extraction.

Speaker 2 (18:15):
So it's all about the bubbles.

Speaker 8 (18:16):
All about the bubbles. But and because the bubbles do
most of the work, we don't need to use heavy
amounts of soaps or chemicals that other cleaners rely on.
When a soapy residue gets applied and left behind, they
attract dirt like a magnet, causing carpets to get dirty
again and faster, requiring more frequent professional cleanings.

Speaker 1 (18:39):
And that's the mistake we make, is folks, you just
want to try to do it ourselves, isn't it. We
use either something that leaves that residue behind, or we
use too much water or what have you. And it
sounds like, why we think we're doing the right thing,
we're actually kind of making the situation worse.

Speaker 8 (18:57):
Right, So we've cleaned for a customer that has a
home machine that uses their solution, a store bought solution,
and it leaves behind the residue. So when they finally
called us, like, I clean it, and the spot comes back.
I clean it and the spot comes back and spot
same spot, and it just looks like it's getting bigger
because as she's putting more of this solution down, it's

(19:19):
leaving that residue. So the spot is coming back because
the dirt is getting attracted to that spot. Our carbonation solution,
the natural does not leave behind any dirt attracting residue,
so the carpets stay cleaner longer.

Speaker 2 (19:32):
So such thing as a spot that's just been there
so dog on long, there's nothing you can do with it.

Speaker 8 (19:38):
It depends if it's dyed the carpet fibers. So those
types of spots that aren't just a dirt we can't al.
We can't correct dyeing fibers. But if it's something that's
a dirt. He was at a home yesterday and they said, oh,
the upstairs full of spots. They've been there since we've
moved in. And Brad started with our pre spray solution

(20:00):
that breaks down some of the spots and you can
watch it dissolve right there in front of your eyes,
and then following up with hot carbonation lifts it and
then we extract it with our equipment.

Speaker 2 (20:12):
Yeah, that's that's I guess.

Speaker 1 (20:13):
Maybe the other things Jessica, is we again we see
a spot on a carpet, we don't realize how again,
how how deep down that thing is. I mean, it's
not just a surface.

Speaker 8 (20:22):
Level thing obviously, right, And you'll notice that with urine
with an ultra violet a UV evaluation, you'll see the
reflecting at the top. But not realizing is that the
urine has seeped down up underneath those fibers. So the
spot that you might treat, the spot that you see
where the dog had had an accident. But you're like,
it still smells because it's that area around it that's

(20:44):
under the fibers that you can't see where the urine
has spread that also needs to be treated.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
I think you've told us before. When you try to
do it yourself again, another situation we're making the make
it it worse because now you're just kind of spread.

Speaker 8 (20:55):
That out, spreading that out, make it especially if you
overwet it and not blot as much up when it
first happens, then you can get a more stinky area
than what you wanted to deal with in the first place.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
Okay, so don't try this at home.

Speaker 8 (21:11):
Done a lot of DIY stuff out there, but yes,
calling a professional like Laxington km Dry can certainly help.

Speaker 1 (21:18):
So let's talk about the most of your customers that
are on a recurring schedule with you. I mean, what
are they a couple of.

Speaker 2 (21:24):
Times a year?

Speaker 8 (21:26):
A lot of time.

Speaker 2 (21:27):
I mean, what's the most popular A.

Speaker 8 (21:28):
Lot of time is every six months they like to
get on the schedule. We have customers that do it
when they take down their Christmas tree before the spring comes,
and then they come again in the summer. We have
some that are on the rotating schedule of before they
put up their Christmas decorations. Then they do it coming

(21:49):
towards the spring or after spring. And then we have
some customers that wait until after pollen season, so they
clean their get their patio cushions done, and then and
you know, again for the fall. And then we have
some customers that like us to clean before pollen season,
so we clean their cushions and then they store them

(22:09):
and they're in a room and put them out when
it's night when pollen seasons are with and they don't
have to deal with that, and then they're nice and
clean for the summer.

Speaker 1 (22:16):
Yeah, and pollen season too, and we don't think about
it as much, but all though we're tracking all that
stuff into the carpets and the services.

Speaker 2 (22:22):
On our home.

Speaker 8 (22:23):
Yeah, your carpets are the biggest filters in your house,
and so they collect a lot of dust and dirt
and allergens as you're walking through or just opening and
closing doors. It just acts like you're like an HVAC
filter when you have that dust that comes through as
it circulates through. The carpets do the same thing, except
they attract the bigger areas.

Speaker 1 (22:43):
Yeah, is the solution you use, the carbonation, the method
you use the same regardless of the surface.

Speaker 2 (22:51):
You're working on.

Speaker 8 (22:52):
No, So, our hardwood floors and LVP cleanings, those have
an entirely different solution designs specifically for those surfaces. Our
tile and grout cleanings, we have a couple of different
cleaners depending on the type of tile it is and
the type of staining that you have, whether it needs
an acidic cleaner or a more alkaline cleaner. But our

(23:14):
natural that we use for carpet and a rinsing of upholstery,
that one's designed for the fibers of you know, cloth
fibers or nylon fibers.

Speaker 2 (23:23):
So how do you when you come in, I mean,
how do you determine what? Again? I guess maybe the
type of staining is that is it algalis that acidic?
I mean, I guess you have to do it.

Speaker 8 (23:31):
For tile and grout, we have an actual tile and
grout kit that we come in. We test the tile
and we test the grout and see which one works
the best. So we like to come out and do
estimates for our tile and grout, you know, to see
what we're looking at, also measure and then we can
provide an accurate price quote as well.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
Okay, terrific. And you mentioned LVP II pupn't thought.

Speaker 1 (23:52):
About that LVP H which works because LVP, I guess
is moisture resistant anyway, right, right, not the same thing
that will hardwood flooring.

Speaker 3 (24:00):
I'm guessing right.

Speaker 8 (24:02):
So we can do the hardwood floor engineer hardwood floors
and LVP LVT. We just cannot do lamin it because
lamin it's a different type of beast on its own,
I guess if you would, has a different nature to it.
So that's the only one that we cannot overwet. But
we have a special machine designed specifically for those hard surfaces.

(24:23):
It doesn't come in with our truck mount system. It
has a solution tank that applies the solution a bristle
brush to work it in and then it also extracts
into its own waste tank, so you get to see
the actual dirt and things that you get pulled out of.

Speaker 3 (24:38):
Yeah you want to.

Speaker 2 (24:42):
All right?

Speaker 1 (24:43):
So then folks that are listening this morning and they've
never you know, had this order treatment before and to
want to get on the books how quickly if they

tail end of the week, and then we're booking out

Speaker 9 (28:30):
What ed Good morning, guys. God Man.

Speaker 2 (28:34):
Gotta start off today with you guys to tell you
about this. The porch people, the port people. You don't
know about the porch people, Oh yeah, and everybody else.
The porch people there are neighbors, that's right. We call
them porch people because they like to sit on that porch, yeh,
which is a lost art in this in this country,
by the way. That's right.

Speaker 1 (28:51):
The porch people. I guess it was earlier this week
I guess it was. That's right, y'all are out there
installing marble counter yeats Brown, Yeah, Fantasy Brown.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
I'll try to remember the name of it.

Speaker 12 (29:04):
Uh huh beautiful too.

Speaker 2 (29:06):
And uh after y'all left, they called over to Anne.
They said, y'all got to come see this. Y'all are
gonna believe it is. And I mean they were just ecstatic.
I mean they look beautiful. First of them. They're beautiful.
Matter of fact, I believe they told me that they
were by your store.

Speaker 9 (29:25):
I think Saturday last night.

Speaker 2 (29:27):
I guess this was last night because it was a weekend.
I was with somebody.

Speaker 9 (29:31):
I was writing somebody up and they came in and
they're all they're all, they're like, we just we just
want to come by and tell you how great of
a job your guys did. And they were rave ray
Mans and tell the customer, which is somebody who had
already been a referral I had, you know, from another
neighbor of hers, like you're in the right hands. You
have no idea how good these guys are.

Speaker 2 (29:51):
And they told you, Yeah, they told U about it.
They probably thought we they paid me to come in.

Speaker 9 (29:55):
And say that it was really good timing though, but
it really was when we.

Speaker 1 (29:59):
Talked about this from time the time. The fabrication part
of what goes on with you guys, because you do everything.
You sell the countertops, you fabricate them, you install them.
Nothing goes to a third party contractor that's right. But
we've talked before about the this.

Speaker 2 (30:13):
The genius of Enrique and the guys back in the shop,
back in the fabrication, and they showed me a section
of the countertop where it's a marble and there's a
there's this grain running through it and it goes across
the countertop and you got a little, you know, little riser, right,
and then you've got a second level.

Speaker 12 (30:29):
Like an upper deck, yeah, and eating area, and that.

Speaker 1 (30:32):
That grain went all to the whole thing, right, the
bottom level, the riser, all the top level like it
was one piece.

Speaker 9 (30:40):
It really be almost you can't bend it. But yeah,
they make it look.

Speaker 1 (30:45):
That way, which you know, inspired me to go back
to my house and look at the marble countertops y'all
put in there. I said, let me look a little
closer here some of it, and sure enough, it's really remarkable.

Speaker 12 (30:56):
Well yeah, yeah, because he did the four inch.

Speaker 2 (30:59):
Yeah right, yeah, so uh anyway, just started passing out along.

Speaker 9 (31:03):
Well, thank you, Yeah, I appreciate it. I did appreciate
them coming in. They it was it was good to
see them, and it was I mean, like I said,
it was good timing. This lady has some concerns, but
she had had a job done in the past by
somebody else and it did not end up that way.
So she was she was super concerned about some of
these issues and uh, just very attentive to detail and everything,

(31:23):
which you know, and I had walked her through him.
I was like, look, you know, you're especially with the
material you're getting, you're in great shape, you mean, and.

Speaker 12 (31:31):
With the porch people. Also while I was measuring, Hey,
I don't know if you know this or not, but
they breed those nemo fish.

Speaker 2 (31:39):
Oh yeah, oh yeah. Yeah. We went out of town.
We took they got like a million of them.

Speaker 3 (31:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 12 (31:45):
I spent me and my daughter. My daughter and I
spent about an hour with them, just talking about fish
and looking at the fish tank. They have a big,
giant fish tank the size of the wall.

Speaker 2 (31:55):
It's huge.

Speaker 12 (31:56):
He's like, my wife, if it if this thing goes
out of power. My neighbors gonna have to come over
Hell's to.

Speaker 4 (32:04):
Know what to do to get to.

Speaker 9 (32:06):
So you still have family over there, like in Caroline,
right on the river. Yes, yes, her roommate like she
her will sit out on that balcony overlooking that river.
I mean when she gets off work, that's what she does.
She'll go out there with her computer and just sit
out there with the with the river sounds and the
birds and squirrels and like even when it's hot like

(32:28):
this that she's got a little fan out there, you know,
the cooler off. It's uh, and it's in the canopy
and everything, so you know she's shaded by the trees
and just the river's right there, you know, if it's
raining or whatnot. You as long as it's not winding
and flowing in into the the balcony there, it's uh yeah,
she uh, she is always out there just just hanging out,

(32:50):
enjoys the outdoors. Hey listen, time is short. Here a
couple of items. Yeah, today and through next Saturday and
then Monday. We're going to follow it up on Labor Day.
You got days huge sales, nine days including today to
get in.

Speaker 4 (33:10):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (33:10):
This is if you just sign up. You don't have
to have it done by then you just get your
material positive so we can procure the material. The prices
that we're getting through then oh yeah we had the vendor. Yeah,
I will say a call from a direct You don't
know what specials that we're going to have coming up,
but I do know that we have gotten a letter

(33:31):
already from one vendor. Prices are going.

Speaker 6 (33:35):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (33:36):
Heard some other rumors out of Brazil, which is really
the bulk of the material, that there's actually a container shortage.

Speaker 12 (33:46):
And selling all the containers to put what in.

Speaker 4 (33:52):
Home.

Speaker 9 (33:54):
That's probably it, which is weird because I've heard people
ask about getting containers lately, like for different reasons. But yeah,
there's apparently a container shortage and they can only get
so many per day, so they're not loading out and
being able to move the amount of product. And if
they're not able to get it out, then they're not
able to make money, so they have to up the
price on what they can get out. So it's going

(34:15):
to affect the industry pretty much nationwide here shortly. Even
though COVID didn't hit up, Yeah yeah it didn't. It
didn't really too bad, and actually it went down on
the courts eventually they went up for a little bit,
but then it came back down. But uh, and then
a lot of that stuff's moved domestically now as well.
There's still a good bit of import stuff on the courts,

(34:36):
but a lot. I'm just the owner.

Speaker 12 (34:38):
I don't know this pricing and everything.

Speaker 2 (34:42):
Just those mundane things.

Speaker 9 (34:44):
He doesn't enjoy those meetings at all. He'll just go
see Casey. He calls me his pocket protector guy always,
as he has on the radio many of times.

Speaker 12 (34:53):
But he got it, he does.

Speaker 1 (34:55):
Yeah, he actually have a pocket right, So alright, so
bottom line prices are getting ready.

Speaker 2 (35:01):
To go up here.

Speaker 9 (35:02):
Yeah, so if you if you went in like get
in now. You know, we'll control that as best we can.
We'll keep an eye on things well different, I mean,
and we do have many different vendors that we can
source from. So hopefully this will it might even get
resolved before we actually at our level have to experience
a big hit. But I would uh, as much as

(35:23):
we go through. And again, you know, on the smaller projects,
we've got the remnants out there that are still on.

Speaker 12 (35:28):
We've already got that stuff next. Yeah, if you want
to deal on it, come down see.

Speaker 9 (35:33):
Us for sure. So yeah we uh yeah that that
stuff's already accounted. I mean, and it's still on the books.
We gotta we gotta get money.

Speaker 12 (35:42):
It's but it's a discount.

Speaker 9 (35:44):
Yeah, it's a big discount.

Speaker 2 (35:46):
Yes, yeah, So save a ton of money on those.

Speaker 1 (35:48):
And I usually set this record straight to the remnant
sale is not come out, grab a remnant and take
it off and go home with it. It's fabricating and everything.

Speaker 12 (35:58):
Yeah, yeah, full service. If come out and measure, we'll
cut it, fabricate it, like you said, install it.

Speaker 2 (36:06):
So remnants sell food.

Speaker 12 (36:08):
We've got some quartz. We've got quartzite. We've got a
lot of quartzite O marbles like you're talking about with
your neighbor. People got the marble. We've got some granite.
We've got a lot a lot of granite, a lot
of level ones. If you're trying to match up something,
we'll probably have peace of it. It's a good shot
of that because I've got thousands of those. So you know,

(36:29):
come on down. Absolutely, we'll take care of you. David'll
be at Piney Grove, I mean, Chapin and Casey's gonna
be at Piney Grove. Fortyina Road.

Speaker 9 (36:38):
And I'm usually pretty familiar you know as what we
have out there, as I now, as I've gotten more,
ajuve been able to have walked a lot a lot more.
And yeah, you keep it, you know, an eye on
what's out there.

Speaker 2 (36:48):
Okay.

Speaker 12 (36:48):
Yeah, he was like the other day this Stan bulls
right over there. Oh okay, tell you a while to
get there, but it's over there, all right. So but
those remnants are stored at the shape and road location. Correct,
good eyes on him, yes, but Casey can sell off
of some stuff. He knows that's there if you, I mean,
I just do you want to say? I mean, I

(37:11):
was like, yeah, you know, I remember that the white
road is sitting and I can you know, send you
a picture of it on yeah, on Monday. Yeah, or
if David's not busy, build busy, you could go out
there and take a picture. He doesn't mind that. That's
my brother, yep, yep.

Speaker 2 (37:26):
All right.

Speaker 1 (37:26):
So that's the remnants. But the courts again starting as
low as fifty square from right.

Speaker 9 (37:32):
Yeah, don't look at me. You have the numbers guy, Yeah,
and it's and that this is you know, a good product.
Fifteen year warranty it's one of the overall better quality
and value products that we've had over the years. So
you know, I really I'm glad to have this product,
and hopefully they're able to keep a conservative price point

(37:54):
going forward. We'll see, you know, going in.

Speaker 12 (37:56):
We got the vendor in our pockets, so it helps.
He's he's our buddy.

Speaker 1 (38:02):
So counting today, nine days left in these two sales. Yes,
Labor Day Monday is the last day. Yeah, and if
you'll be open Libor Day Monday and.

Speaker 9 (38:10):
Today you come out today.

Speaker 2 (38:12):
Yeah, we'll be up.

Speaker 9 (38:14):
This Monday. This Monday is my birthday. So anything extra
you know, yeah?

Speaker 2 (38:22):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, birthday, man, we did we wish we
have your birthday a couple of weeks.

Speaker 12 (38:29):
Give him some swag, find some swag for him. I
don't know if we have any swag left around here.
Old T shirt, that's what I'm talking about. Old T
shirt now my heart radio shirt.

Speaker 2 (38:45):
Right yeah.

Speaker 1 (38:46):
As we move into the fall here, we're not there yet.
It's oh god, I wish we were closed. Yeah, but
we're closed things. But things kind of ramp up a
bit as we get move start moving close to the holidays.

Speaker 9 (38:57):
Right, yes, So as we get in and get closer
to Thanksgiving, especially people wanting projects done. And then by
the end of the year, you know, a lot of
our builders and and other and contracting everybody else wants
to get stuff off the books. These these flippers want
to get the houses moved, so they everybody's gonna be pushing,
push and pushing. Souh. Now's a good chance to get

(39:18):
in at a good price and good timing.

Speaker 12 (39:21):
Yeah, I will fitch in. You know, we've got people
on the books, but I can kind of actually add
some jobs to the books. So if you got something
that's in a hurry or something like that, I could
probably accommodate that, right, I try to for sure.

Speaker 2 (39:33):
Oh you always do, I know, Yeah, I know, all right,
But but point is is that it's getting ready to
get real busy up in here. Yeah.

Speaker 9 (39:41):
That always does, it always does. Yep.

Speaker 1 (39:43):
Yeah, if you are, for example, thinking in the back
of your mind, okay, yeah, man, Thanksgiving a long way off,
but i'd try to have new countertops by then.

Speaker 2 (39:52):
I mean, make a move now.

Speaker 1 (39:55):
But I mean, what what's kind of the latest Typically
in any given year, if somebody wants that done by Thanksgiving,
you better get it.

Speaker 2 (40:01):
You make your selection by really.

Speaker 9 (40:06):
In October. Say well, if you can get something that
started with the prices that we have in the next
you know, nine days, right, go ahead and get it started.
I mean, you're it's going to be done one way
or the other. Put down your deposit, save some money
and we'll get you know, we'll get you to line
up and get it done for you.

Speaker 1 (40:23):
All right, absolutely, okay, So today, casey again, you're at

James Carwell, the owner of Freedom Plumbing, James, good morning,
my friend.

Speaker 2 (43:04):
How are you.

Speaker 4 (43:04):
Good morning Gary, how are you.

Speaker 2 (43:06):
I'm doing well, man, I was good.

Speaker 1 (43:07):
I was getting ready to say we're going to talk
about all things plumbing today, but actually were gonna talk
about well, gas lines, which may be a surprise to
folks that if you need a gas line installed, and
I know this because you did it for me a
couple of years ago, you call a plumber.

Speaker 4 (43:22):
Yes there, Yeah, we do gas lines to a lot
of different things. Uh, thankless, water heaters, pool heaters, gas logs,
you name it.

Speaker 2 (43:32):
Yeah, I think we put a new the grill.

Speaker 1 (43:34):
Yeah, we get right. We put in a gas stove
at the house we used to live in, and you
came out and yeah, Rando's gas.

Speaker 4 (43:42):
Line get a little bit more uh detailed than people expect,
I guess.

Speaker 1 (43:48):
So yeah, and again, as we talk about from time
to time, you know, I'm a good example of this, James,
that when it comes to plumbing, there are a couple
of little things I might try, Like, for example, uh,
this past week, I am called a new shower head. Okay,
you know, easy enough, right, you know, I just unscrew
the old and put the new one on.

Speaker 2 (44:06):
I can do that.

Speaker 1 (44:07):
But but then I know my limits, you know, I
because I know you can really mess things up if
you get into something you don't know about what you're doing. Well,
that's with water. Gas that's a whole nother level right there.

Speaker 4 (44:19):
Huh oh yeah, yeah, gas is not something I would
recommend a homeowner trying to install themselves.

Speaker 2 (44:28):
So I mean, how obviously there are a lot of
safety issues involved, But you said it can get it
can get tricky and get complicated.

Speaker 4 (44:34):
How so, well, you know some customers will say, hey,
we've got a gas line right over here, you can
just tie into this and and run over to what
we're trying to put in. And in some cases you
just can't do that.

Speaker 2 (44:46):
Well, Well, what kind of cases we're talking about here, James, Oh,
some example.

Speaker 4 (44:52):
Well, let's say you're trying to add a tankle's water
here in and and there's a gas line, you know,
running underneath the house right in the area where you
want to install you know, the tankless. Well, the tankless
uses you know, on average one hundred and eighty to
two hundred thousand bt us. If that line is feeding
something else that's already you know, taking up a good volume,

(45:14):
a good amount of that gas, then that line is
it going to be able to supply two hundred thousand
BTUs to that fixture plus let's just say sixty to
an HVAC in it, or it might be half an
inch and it needs to be three quarter inch to
carry that amount of volume. So in cases like that,
we actually have to run from the meter all the

(45:35):
way to the tankless with a dedicated line to make
sure it's getting the right amount of fuel to operate properly.

Speaker 2 (45:43):
Gotcha, I gotcha. So, yeah, it's so.

Speaker 1 (45:47):
In other words, the line coming originally maybe from the meter,
isn't big enough to supply all that. It doesn't really matter,
doesn't Yeah, yeah, that makes sense.

Speaker 4 (45:59):
And in some cases, you know, you you know, you
add two hundred thousand bt us to the system, well
that that may max your system out. You might you
might have too much demand and not enough supply. So
then what we have to do is we have to
increase that system to what they call a two pound
system or a high pressure system and uh and then
regulate it back down at the fixtures themselves. So you know,

(46:23):
there's you got to make sure you get the right
amount of fuel to the fixture for it to operate properly.
And and you know, calculations and gas flow and the length.
The further you run a line, the less you're going
to get at the end of that line. So you know,
all of the ass to come into play when you're
talking about running a gas line to an appliance.

Speaker 1 (46:44):
So now, of course that all this gas is supplied
by whoever your local energy utility is. I mean, when
you guys go in to do something like this, do
you have to get approvals from them or coordinate with
them or anything like that, or is just you just
go ahead and do it.

Speaker 4 (46:58):
Typically, when we're running a new line, we'll have to
pressurize that line so it's not connected to anything. It's
got to a gauge on one end and a cap
on the other. They'll come out and they'll pass, the
local municipality will say okay, you're good to go. It's
got to hold a certain amount of pressure for twenty
four hours. And once they okay that, then we can

(47:21):
They'll release you know, that information to Dominion for example,
and then Dominion can come out and increase the size
of that meter from a half pound to a two
pound meter, and then you know, it'll already have all
the regulators on, so when they increase that pressure, it'll
be increased to everything except the appliance, because you have

(47:44):
to regulate it from two pound to half pound at
the appliance or close to the appliance. And in some
cases we can do hybrid systems where you know, let's
say you have a line running through and it's feeding
your h fact, your gas logs, and your stove. Well,
we can put one regulator on that will regulate all
of those because it already operated on half a pound

(48:07):
and then just frun the two pound line from the
meter to wherever, say a large appliances going a pool
heater or a tankless and you know, for example, it
just depends on the layout. It depends on what you're
putting in, how many BTUs, what the consumption rate is

(48:28):
of that appliance, as to what needs to happen to
make sure that it's going to operate properly.

Speaker 1 (48:33):
You know, since we're talking about this, it might be
good to talk about from the consumer standpoint, gas line
safety tips. Of course, they it's got that odor right
that they add too. That's not that's not the original
odor of this natural gas.

Speaker 4 (48:49):
Isn't that rotten smell?

Speaker 2 (48:51):
Yeah, they add that to it so you will smell
it if there's a problem.

Speaker 4 (48:54):
Right, Yeah. And you know, I got this little device
I keep in my truck and it's it's just it's
a gas sniffer. It actually can detect combustible gases and
it's a it's a real neat thing to have, especially
if you have gas and if you're ever concerned about it, uh,

(49:15):
you know, you can just put it up to the
line and see. Sometimes in commercial applications. We had some
appliances in restaurants that were letting gas out and we
could find that pretty quickly with that what we call
a sniffer.

Speaker 1 (49:32):
Are those things that you can you can purchase and
operate on your own as the consumer as the home event.

Speaker 4 (49:38):
Yeah, they're pretty pretty easy to use. Just turn it
on and it'll any kind of combustible gas, it'll will
it'll be. And I said, I think I purchased minut lows.

Speaker 2 (49:49):
So you can get these at the big busts that.

Speaker 4 (49:52):
That would be something that you can use if you
have concerns. Another thing I always recommend when you have
any kind of gas applying it is a carbon monoxide
detector to make sure that the exhaust set of your
water heater or your guess dryer or anything like that
doesn't create any kind of it's safety issue inside the

(50:15):
home as far as the exhaust, so that anytime you
have those those type of appliances, I recommend carbon monoxide detector.

Speaker 2 (50:22):
Well, and I don't know you know how much of
an expert you are on things like those CO two detectors,
but for example, we have one in our bedroom. Is
that enough?

Speaker 1 (50:30):
I mean, depending on the size of your home. Should
you have more than one or is one typically you know,
adequate to raise an alarm if is there something going
on here?

Speaker 4 (50:42):
You know, I honestly I recommend them near the appliance.
That's what I typically do. We put a water heater
in for a local restaurant, and I just went out
on my own and as part of that job, got
a battery operated see A two detector, and I placed

(51:04):
it in that utility room where that water heater was located,
just to make sure, you know, if there's anything that happened,
birds nests in the exhaust, or you know, whatever the
case may be, that the employees were saved once that
thing was installed because they didn't have one in there.

Speaker 1 (51:21):
If you come across the situation where you get just
a little whiff oh something that smells like gas and
then it's gone and you know, smell it again, I mean,
is that something you should definitely have checked out or
if you if you if you notice it again, have
it checked out.

Speaker 4 (51:37):
Or so the regulator at you know, where the gas
comes in, it's gas meter. The municipality or dominion or
whoever supplies the gas has their own regulator that regulates
that down to either half pound or two pounds, and
those regulators do have vents on them, and you can

(51:57):
occasionally smell gas around that meter, but if you're spelling
it inside your home, the first thing I would do
is call whoever your gas supplier is and have them
come out. And if they determine that it's the safety issue,
they'll shut the gas off and they'll lock the meter
out until the repairs made and then they'll come back

(52:18):
out and resupply.

Speaker 1 (52:20):
So you say dominion or or you know one electric
operators or whomever, but they'll check it out, they'll shut
it down where they won't do the work. You need
to call a plumber to do the work.

Speaker 4 (52:29):
Right correct and in some cases they'll locate it and
and they'll they'll tell you where where exactly the leak
is because once they lock that meter out, it's hard
to determine without any pressure where Your problem is that
in some cases we have to actually disconnect the line.

(52:51):
We have to add pressure to the system and then
you know, use a what we call a bubble to
you know gas bubbles decker to see where, you know,
check every fitting on the system and see what fitting
creates bubbles and that's where your leap is. It's basically

(53:11):
like a soapy substance that we put on the line
that bubbles up if there's any gas escaping the fitting.

Speaker 1 (53:18):
Good stuff to know from James Carwell this morning, the
owner of Freedom Plumbing. Whether it's plumbing issues or plumbing
concerns or something you need to get at it, or
