Speaker 1 (00:14):
My friends, Good morning and welcome in to the Home
Improvement Show of the Midlands, and thanks for joining us
this morning here on one of three point five FM
and five sixty am WBOC. It is Saturday October the
twenty six, so good to have you join us this morning.
Coming up, we'll be talking to our newest contributor, Rus
Markaesy with a finishing Touch team Russ and his folks
(00:36):
putting a new paint job on our master bathroom and
discovering how they're different. Wow are they different? It will
tell you all about how they're different. Coming up Accordingyon Renee.
Actually Renee's going to drop by today from Diamond Concrete
Solutions and we'll talk about one of the partners they
work with when it comes to organizing things in your home.
About that, and mister Electric Jeremy Halliday is going to
(00:56):
drop by and see us as well. We'll talk about
outdoor enhancements and overall home enhancements that mister Electric can
help you achieve. And you're a home or your business
for that matter. All right, But first up, it's Summer
from Beaver roofgin Gutters who joins us and whole Summer Girl.
That new roof y'all put in our house yesterday. Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Uh, we are so glad that you're happy with it.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
Unbelievable. I mean, your crew was out there early yesterday
morning when I was still at work, and they were
ripping off those old shingles. My wife was at the house.
She texts me said, oh, yeah, those things are coming off.
It's like I just apparently those shingles are worse off
than we thought they were.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
So look a lot of times it happens that way.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
Yeah, yeah, wow, first time. This is the You all
have done a lot of work for us in the
past with the gutters and remodeling jobs and everything with
Anthony Jery Construction and always done a great job for us.
This is the first time we've ever had to have
a roof replaced. And you know, I'm about sixty five
years old now. If I play my cards right here,
it's the only time I ever have to do it.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
That's right, You're exactly right, one and done.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Yeah, yeah, there you go. But thanks again. It looks fabulous,
it really does.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Glad can hear it?
Speaker 1 (02:09):
And we again, this is a new house and it
passed inspection all but we really wanted to get a
new roof put up there. So this had nothing to
do with storm damage. But I know you guys have
been like running non stop when it comes still a
month later now from a storm damage from Helene. And
I know you've come across a number of things that
homeowners have realized when it comes to their insurance policies,
(02:32):
they weren't really aware.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Of a lot. You know, it's it's happened more more
than than I would have thought. You know, yeah, you know,
knowing you're deductible and knowing what the deductible is for
each different type of occurrence, like they're built into these policies.
You know, it's when can be different than hail, that
(02:55):
can be different than you know, just other types of occurrences.
We've had homeowners who have had no idea that their
one coverage occurrence deductible was fourteen thousand dollars. And I'm
not talking one customer. There's been that's more than the roof,
and that's what I'm saying. I'm like, well, then what
the heck? You know, there's probably two to two to
(03:16):
three homeowners that we've had call in and saying that,
and I was like, that's it's incredible. You know, obviously,
we we don't have a whole lot of these types
of you know, natural disasters and name and you know,
name storms, but when they do come, that's what insurance
is for. So it's really important. You know. I urged
everybody just to call your insurance you know your you know,
(03:39):
your local insurance agent, and just pick their brains, ask
them what your insurance covers, what it doesn't cover, and
just no, just know because a lot of times, you know,
we're just buying a new house or what have you,
and we're just saying, yep, okay, that's great, and the
price looks good. The price looks good, but it doesn't
always have that coverage that that's going to really benefit
(03:59):
you in the end.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
And that's one of the things that, let's face it,
I mean none of us do, right, I mean we
don't get we don't get down to the fine print.
Half a time it's written in such way we don't
even really understand.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
It exactly exactly, all right, So.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Sit down with your agent, say okay, explain this to
me exactly.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
I hate it. You know, it's just so it's frustrating
because you know, like they just want to get their home,
their lives back to normal. But fourteen thousand dollars, that's
a lot. That's a lot for anybody just to say, oh,
that's just a deductible, you know.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
So I mean that there are there are many, any
many roof replacement jobs out there are going to cost
much more than that. Are there?
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Not a lot? No, not not too too many. So
that's yeah, it's frustrating. So, like I said, I really
wanted to urge everybody just to just to ask get
out there, ask your local agent and see what you
got covered. And just make sure that you are covered.
And we'll be financially ready and able if and when
the time comes that you need to make, you know,
(04:58):
make these repairs.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
Yeah, and then we've talked about this many times before.
I mean, this is one of the things you guys
are very big on, that is, you know, advocating for
folks who call you when it is you know, some
sort of a natural you know, mother natures that fault
here for some damage to to a roof. You guys
work very closely with your clients with their insurance companies.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
We do you do? You know? And and a lot
of times so they'll say, oh, well, there are some
of these companies who are you know, on a preferred
list or you know they you know, and they're like, oh,
well they only work for the cheapest price and whatnot.
Let me tell you that is not the case. You know,
(05:40):
a lot a lot of times we could be a
preferred contractor for this company, for this company, not for
this company, and we you know, that's that's regardless, that's
besides the point. But we always look for our customers
what they deserve, you know, what they really deserve and
this replacement and what have you. You know, and you
(06:03):
got to think about it as a homeowner, you're paying
this this payment every single month, how many ever years,
you know, you really deserve that. You know, you deserve
to get what you know, a replacement. If there are
so many shingles and an x amount you know, square
area on this roof, you deserve it. You paid for it.
(06:24):
So that's what we're doing. We're going to bat for
you or making sure that you know, we're taking time,
you know, when the adjuster comes out. If that happens
sometimes with a lot of these you know, we've had
so many they're just taking you know, hey, send us photos.
Well that's what we're doing. We're taking a million and
ten photos sending those in if that's the case, or
if the adjuster does come out, we're taking the time
(06:47):
to you know, obviously, let the adjuster look and do
what they need to do first and say, hey, you know,
I did notice over here, I did this. Because we're
not trying to step on their toes. We're not trying
to bully or boss them around either, but because that's
not gonna that's not going to get anything, you know,
anything better or whatnot, we just try to work alongside
them and show and you know a lot of times
(07:10):
you're like, oh, wow, you're right. You know you're right this, that,
and that's what it's all about. And plus you know
it would be the same if it were on the inside.
An adjuster came in on the inside looking around for
a bathroom. So so to say, you're in and out
of your bathroom, how many times a day, how long
you know it's in there exactly? You know what's in there.
(07:32):
You've seen this one thy and eighteen times. You're not
on your roof every day. So that's that's the thing.
We're making ourselves aware with your damages. So whenever your homewark.
Whenever the adjuster is there, we can go to bats
for you.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Well, I appreciate it. Is this is like going and
getting your Friday night pizza and getting home and realizing
they didn't put the pizza in the box.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
Basically, that's right.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
I mean, come on, you like that.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
That's the worst, right yea?
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Anyway, let's uh, let's switch Gibbs here for a second
summer because we want to talk about another uh topic,
and that is that y'all. Are me make sure I
get this right here? You are a Owens Corning platinum provider?
Is that my saying that? Right?
Speaker 2 (08:18):
It's a platinum preferred contractor ye third contractor Okay, what
does that mean?
Speaker 1 (08:23):
Why is that a big deal?
Speaker 2 (08:26):
So, you know, going along with warranties and and things
like that. So Owen's courting obviously big name in the
construction game. Not only do they do roofing, they do
you know, insulation, any and almost all types of construction stuff.
They've been around forever, big big name. They offer one
(08:46):
of the biggest I would the best so to say,
warranties out there when it comes to getting your roof replaced.
So and there there are only a the only way
you can get this Platinum protection that Owen's Corning offers
is to have your roof installed by a Platinum contractor.
(09:11):
So you know, it's it's a big, big, big honor.
We are forever grateful that we, you know, passed all
of the the checkofs and checkpoints and whatnot that it
takes to become a Platinum preferred installer with them. So
obviously great, you know, customer service workmanship, you know, making
(09:33):
sure that we are vetted and looking into backgrounds and insurances,
you know, things like that, the regular things that that
comes along with. But yeah, we've had you know, we've
had to do inspections with them and things of that nature.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
So pretty rigorous process exactly.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Yeah. So this is a lifetime warranty. When you so
this Platinum protection warranty, it is a purchase. It is
a purchase like an extra warranty that you would purchase
at the time of your roof installation. It's lifetime. Will
you hear lifetime and sometimes it's not lifetime, it's pro
rated when it comes to ten you know what have you? No,
(10:14):
this is good for the the fifty years, so after
that is when it starts kicking in. It might be
pro rated after that. But and it covers material, the
extra components, and the labor. A lot of times with
other you know, other warranties, it will cover material. And
(10:36):
then when you get down to that, the material is
shingles only. So a lot of people who might not
know when you put on a roof, there's not just shingles.
You have your underlayment, you have your hip and rage,
you have your ridgiment. You know, there's all types of
different components that go into that. So and those are
additional costs, not just shingles. So that's why, you know,
(10:58):
that's why it's a pretty you know, honor for us
to you know, say that we were Platinum preferred contractors.
And you know we take that pretty seriously too.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
So well, kudos kudos to Bigger Roof.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
We're really happy to to be on that, you know
that team.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
Absolutely. Oh, I gotta, I got to pass this along
to you. I don't think I mentioned this to you
a couple of weeks ago. It was probably the day
after I signed the contract. Have y'all put this roof
on our house? And uh, I get a knock on
the door, and sure enough, it's a and actually it's
it's a it's a it's a local roofing company that
(11:34):
people would would probably have heard of their name before.
Knock it on there and want to talk to you
about my about replacing my roof and just signed the
deal to have Beef roof and gutters do that. So
but thank you dollar short. But but you know, and
again we see this so often after something like Helene,
(11:56):
where uh, people just come up a knock on your
door and somehow well at least he wasn't doing this.
He was he was offering to do a roof inspection,
was what he was doing. Sure, but you get you
get some of these fly by night crews that come
through and they can just they'll tell you from just
from the street, Yeah, your your roof needs to be replaced.
(12:17):
Exactly would work in times like these, don't we exactly?
Speaker 2 (12:21):
And I will say, like you said, their local roof
are good, that's that's great. But if you have somebody
else that you've never heard their name, and they're knocking
on your door and we have just had some sort
of event, whether event, don't do it, do not have
them do that, Just say great, thank you you see,
you see you see stuff from the ground. Great, and
(12:42):
then just pick up the phone and call Beaver just
to know what We're happy to help. Trust the yeah,
do not trust their call. We call them storm chasers.
Don't trust the storm chasers because something will happen. And
you know, two years from now your roof like might
you know knock on wood my week, but they're not
going to be around. We'll be here or come there
(13:04):
see what the problem is and we're going to fix it.
So you know, that's that's always something to take caution
about whenever you have somebody knocking on your house wanting
to get up on your room.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
All right, well, I know you want folks to go
to a Facebook at Angie, to home Advisor, Google before
they do call you, whether for a free roof inspection
or roof of placement, repairs, gutters, you name it. And
after they do their homework they pick up the phone
or go to the website. How do they reach a
summer eight.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
O three nonne one roof and Beaverroofing dot com.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
And that's nine nine one seven six six three by
the way, great Beaver, thanks so much, beautiful roof on
our home. Thanks for that, and you have a great weekend.
We'll talk soon you too.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
Take care.

five sixty AMWVOC and as always it's wonderful to have
you with us. My name is Gary David, now joined
by our newest contributor to the program. Back for the
second time. Hey, it's Russ Marchesi the Finishing Touch team. Rose,
Good morning, my friend. Good to be here, Gary, goodbe here. Now.
I had to tell you we would we We had
discussed this a couple of weeks ago. We just moved
(16:06):
into a new home and the master back. My wife is.
As I've established, she enjoys painting. She really does. Uh
you know me, I can take her to leave it.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
It's an acquired taste.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Yeah, but I'm you know, listen, put I'd rather paint
than hang a ceiling fan. Okay, you so, But anyway,
we got to talk at a couple of weeks ago
and the master bathroom on a new house. She wanted
to she wanted it done, but she wanted it done right.
And it's kind of a weird setup. There's a lot
of angles, a lot of uh, you know, a lot
of trim word it is and this and that it was.
(16:42):
It was good. So so we talked, I tell you what,
little bit, let's have your guys do this now. So
y'all came out and uh and and we went through
the whole process and you know, got got an estimate
and got everything. You know, It's very cool, I mean,
the way you do things and we've we've talked about
this before that you guys, you know your focus is
on customers.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
We strive on it, Gary, We really do. We strive
on it. It's it's it's one of our number one mottos.
It really is. Gary, It's uh, there's nothing worse. I
can't tell you how many times Gary, I've shown up
to a customer's home for an estimate and they'll tell
me you're the fourth person that I called and the
only one that has shown up.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Amazing.
Speaker 3 (17:20):
It just is And I could never wrap my head
around that. You know, for for twenty two years, I
have never once, uh you know, just completely blatantly missing
an appointment. You know, things come up and you have
to you have to reschedule sometimes, right just life haskets
in touch. But you have to do what you say
you're gonna do. And that's that's super important for us.
(17:41):
That's that's absolutely number one.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
That really is absolutely And as on aside here, because
you get your hands Darty, you own the company, but
you get your hand. We had a talking about an
article I saw last week on the morning show here.
I think it was home Deepot. I believe it was
somehow anyway, they now have a rule. This was this
is every company should do this. They now have a
(18:05):
rule that they're executive members have to go at least
once a quarter and spend a day in a store
on the front lines.
Speaker 3 (18:15):
I agree. I think that's great.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
I mean, is that fact.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
I think that's great. Absolutely, absolutely. And you know, between
myself and my partner Winston Winston Hawkins is my partner
in the company, and between the two of us, we're
roaming around constantly, Gary, checking out jobs, talking to customers.
We just have to. It's a it's a quality control
type type thing for us. We have eight foremans that
(18:41):
work for us as well that do the same thing.
So between you know, almost ten of us, basically, Gary,
you know, we're monitoring things and making sure that you know,
not only quality is correct, but just simple logistics.
Speaker 1 (18:54):
You get one chance, right, that's it.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
You get one chance.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
That's it. You have to you have to make a
good impression. And I really do feel that that's why
we've been so successful for twenty two years is just
you know, the service and the quality it's got to
be there.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
It has to be due to business the right way,
So you know, we came out by Actually was I
was here at the at the station at the time,
and you dropped by. My wife was there, and she
was blown away by the whole process. And then you
and I talked later in the day and you said, okay,
we're coming out and was this past Thursday? Yep? And Friday?
Speaker 3 (19:27):
Correct.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
You said it'll be a two day job. And I
thought to myself, Wow, it's like, you know, it's a
master bathroom, but it's not that big. And then I
realized what we had talked about. Absolutely yeah, because this
is not it has to be yeah, finishing touch team.
If somebody, if you hire a painter to come do
a refresh for you and all they're doing is coming
(19:52):
in and slapping a code of paint up on what's
already there, you just got taken.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
It's a rush job. Then it just is you know,
you have to we have time for you have to
have curing times. Right, So when we come in, part
of our pain job, Gary, isn't just you know, fixing
a little nail hole here and there and slapping some
pain on. Okay, we take care of all the imperfections.
We sand your walls down.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
I mean, you just took it right down to the
shoe rock.
Speaker 3 (20:17):
That's right. We cover everything, you know, immensely like a
like a tense we call it in the industry, cover
it like a tent as you saw it. And we
do all our patchwork. But that's got a dry it's
got a cure, okay. You know, and a lot of
folks what they do is they go out there and
they use force dried materials and they try to cut
corners and get it done in one day. Okay, sure,
(20:41):
we just don't do that. Okay, you've got to let
it dry. We'll come back the next day. We sand
all those pat all that patchwork down that we repaired, Okay,
we use correct specific primers for those areas, and then
we go a step further as you've seen, and we
spot prime once again with the actual finish. Okay. Then
(21:01):
we put the two coats on like we do, right,
and that really makes for a job well done. It
just does. And it's just, uh, you've got to go
you've got to go above and beyond, and that is
just that is our standard paint chop. Yeah, we're gonna
do that every single time. It's just how it goes.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
So often folks that that we have on the show
here we talk about this because it's almost as what
you do when you get to that, when you finally
get to that, that that second code of that first
it's like goda paint. That's like the icing on top
of the cake. It is all the hard work, is
everything that comes before that, the preparation to make that
surface ready to as you mentioned, get rid of the imperfections,
(21:43):
because let's face it, I mean you well you saw
the wall in our house, and you know when we
bought that house, whoever came in there and redid it.
I mean they did just what we were talking about.
They went in and slapped a code of paint over
all the imperfections, and it showed.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
There were a lot. Yeah, you could see them all
over the place.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
It's crazy.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
Just where they removed a towel bar in your bathroom
all right and you know, just did a quick patch
job on it. You can see those those those issues
on there. So that's what we corrected for you, and
uh yeah, it's you have to do it, you know.
I can't tell you how many times as well, we
always put it a minimum of two coats of paint
on everything. Gary. Okay, even if we're going over existing
(22:21):
walls with the same color, I have customers ask me
all the time, well, it's the same color, can we
just put one coat on? It makes all the difference
in the world to put that second coat on. It
really really does. Uh, for for clean ability, for to
be able to wipe the walls down, to make it last,
for the longevity, you really have to put that second
coat on it. It's been very, very important. It absolutely is.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
It's excellent. Well, I can tell you we were thrilled
with it. My wife fantastic. It's just it came out right,
It really did. It really did. So you do home,
you have a lot of a lot a lot of
you do a big job, I mean commercial big stuff.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
Absolutely the same way though, right, same exact way. Absolutely. Yeah, painting,
you know, whether it's commercial or is it residential painting, Gary,
we're always going to have the same system, the same quality,
using the same products. We don't skimp on products, by
the way, Okay, you hear the not that you know
(23:22):
it's it's you hear this a lot like in the past,
where you know you'll have painters watering paint down using
cheap paints. In all honesty, paint is really the cheapest
part of it. Okay. We have to use the best
quality paints no matter what it makes. It makes all
the difference, uh, for the outcome of the job for
(23:42):
it to look right.
Speaker 1 (23:43):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
And we do a lot of commercial painting as well.
We use the same products. Super high quality products from
Sherwin Williams is what we use. Matter of fact, we
just got done doing the Performing Arts Center on Platt
Springs Road. It came out absolutely full, beautiful building. So yeah,
we do anything from you know, high schools, performing arts
(24:06):
center to a customer's bathroom in were kitchen, right, yeah.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
And we got about a minute and a half, about
two three minutes here. I want to ask you about
this again because you brought this up a couple of
weeks ago. When it comes to kitchen cabinets or cabinets
and bathrooms or or wherever, uh you guys, this is
something you specialize in. It is rather than redoing all
your cabinetry, you guys can come to the rescue, tell
us what you do.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
We do so it is a fraction of the price
of replacing your cabinets. Okay, Stained cabinets or if you
just want to change the color. Okay, it is a
fraction of the price. You get a lot of bang
for your buck refinishing the cabinets and we have it's
a it's a special niche of ours. We have a
state of the art spray booth in our warehouse right
(24:54):
here in Irmo, and we remove your cabinet doors. We
do all the preparation work on that you mentioned about
the prep work. We go extensively on the prep work.
When it comes to cabinetry. We use all sorts of
different fillers, bondos to fill any little gaps and knicks.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (25:11):
Again, we use fantastic products on that and we we
spray to coats of course after priming, and they come
out absolutely beautiful every time. We really enjoyed doing cabinetry.
We really do. It's a special niche of ours that
we that we we take pride in.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
We really do well. I think we all know. If
you want to replace kitchen cabinets, that's an arm and
both arms and mobile.
Speaker 3 (25:34):
Sure is it really really crazy? It's it's a great
way to do it, and you can you can disguise
the limit. When when it comes to kitchen cabinets, right,
or vanities in your room if you want to just
accent something, or you have a kitchen island perhaps that
you want to just spruce it up and change the
color to add a little color of pop to it.
It's a great way to do it, it really is.
Speaker 1 (25:54):
You've been doing this, I think you told me since
you were eight. You started eight years old. Your dad
started this guy, yes, sir, and it's been family owned
now for twenty two years. Let's face it these days
and times, nobody lasts that long. But not doing the
job right.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
Absolutely, yeah, no, it's uh. He would drag me along
when I was eight years old and uh, picking up
wallpaper scraps and sanding down all sorts of trim and whatnot.
And now he's great and yeah, but twenty two years,
it's been a long time him and I've been doing it.
So he just retired this past spring. He retired, Yeah,
he sure did. And he's enjoying himself down in Florida fishing.
Speaker 1 (26:28):
So good for him.
Speaker 3 (26:29):
That's what he's doing now.
Speaker 1 (26:30):
It's good for him, absolutely all right. So again, whether
it's like in our situation, a bathroom or it's a
performing arts center, I mean, it's from from march to small.
I mean, there's there's nothing that you guys don't do
very diversified with that as you have to be right
and again remember the process. Don't be shocked like I
was when you when you get ahold of these folks,
will you find out that even a small job is
(26:52):
going to be a two day job is because the
thing is being done the right way. That's right, And
I get this is the first experience I've had like that.
Y wow, I didn't know that this was the right way.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
Absolutely. You know a lot of people are like that, Gary,
They just don't you know, they don't know what they
don't know. And that's okay, but that's what we're here for.
You know, we're here to educate and uh you know,
and you know, give give a great service.
Speaker 1 (27:15):

It's good to have you with us. My name is
Gary David. Now welcome into the studio, Renee Even from
Diamond Concrete Solutions and a guest whom will introduce here
in just a moment. But first up, Rene, good to
see you.
Speaker 9 (29:50):
Buddy, Well, good to see you. Thank you.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
One of the many things you do when you go
into a home or a business for that matter, and
you know you're you're you know, getting that concrete looking
great for a variety of means, the variety of methods
that you you can choose. Wrong. You also, you know
folks who are are oftentimes doing this or maybe remodeling, upgrading, whatever.
(30:14):
And you do a lot of work in garages, yes,
a lot, a lot, and people are nobody seems to
part a car in a garage anymore, right.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
Yeah, more more.
Speaker 1 (30:23):
That's true. You're using for a living space. And then
this is where you all come in when it comes
to the floor of the concrete flooring and getting it
to look like well whatever you want to look like,
you know, hardwood or marble or tile or state or
what you know, or begin this Courtney's told us in
the past. If you're that fan and you want it
and garn it in black or orange and purple or whatever,
(30:44):
you can do that too.
Speaker 10 (30:46):
I love when you say the orange. Yeah, seeing your
shirt that's not really very orange.
Speaker 1 (30:51):
No, it's not very it's very much garned in black.
Speaker 3 (30:54):
Yeah, And we do those.
Speaker 1 (30:56):
You do those too, Yes, But you're want to take
a say, for example, this case of garage space and
you wanted to make it into a living area, party area,
you know whatever, Ashisha, the man cave, what have you.
There are other needs that may well need to be addressed,
which brings us to another partnership that's right, that you're
(31:19):
involved with.
Speaker 10 (31:19):
Yeah, So seeing the flexibility of garages got us to
the idea to potten up with way more than just flooring.
So as we had a guest here a couple of
weeks ago was Ashley in built right Garages. We also
have a great relationship with Closet Factory, and that's actually.
Speaker 3 (31:40):
The guest I have here today, which is Alexis.
Speaker 1 (31:43):
Alexis Marie the Closet Factory. Good morning, good morning, Nice
to see you.
Speaker 11 (31:47):
Nice to see you as well.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
So Closet Factory, now this is a franchise location. You'll
cover most all the state I think, don't yes.
Speaker 11 (31:54):
All of South Carolina and parts of Georgia.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
Okay, so tell us about Closet Factory. Now, I underually
you're you're a designer, right, that is correct, which I
think is the hardest part.
Speaker 11 (32:05):
I mean, that's the part I think that most people
care the most about. Obviously, the construction and the quality
of the work is a huge key factor for them,
but the way that it looks is what's going to
make them feel good. So I get to come in
and I get to meet with the clients and measure
the space and find out what their wants and needs
are and then help them create a beautiful custom space.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
And I bet you've witnessed all sorts of them.
Speaker 11 (32:28):
Huh oh yeah, yes, very much.
Speaker 1 (32:31):
So I can only imagine. So, And we were talking
about garages, but again, closet factory, it's not limited to
garage is obviously anywhere the clauset is or you can
put one is what.
Speaker 11 (32:41):
You do, right, exactly. Yeah, So closets, I think is
what most people call us for just because it's in
the name. But garages, pantries, mudrooms, pretty much anywhere that
you can have a custom space. We can do outside
of kitchens and baths.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
Oh okay, yeah, okay, terrific. So now your job again
is to go in and and create the vision.
Speaker 11 (33:01):
Yes exactly. So I meet with the client, I take
their inventory of their items, whether it be in the
garage or in their closet, take the measurements, and then
we use a three D rendering program, so I get
to actually plug everything in and they get to see
it in three d This is.
Speaker 1 (33:17):
Right there on site, on site. Yeah, such cool technology. Yeah,
it is right. You know, I wish I had one
just to play around with. You know.
Speaker 11 (33:24):
It's a lot of fun. Definitely, I bet it is.
Speaker 1 (33:27):
So you will sit there in real time on a
is it what do they call those CAD programs?
Speaker 11 (33:33):
Yeah, it's a CAD program?
Speaker 1 (33:34):
Okay, what does that stand for?
Speaker 2 (33:36):
My line?
Speaker 3 (33:36):
It's got to stand for something, doesn't it? Computer system design?
Speaker 1 (33:38):
Is that what that means? Okay? Yeah, if it was,
got an acronym for everything. Yeah, I got DCS over here,
you know, Diamond Concrete Solutions. Yeah, you can't pronounce it easily,
but but so you can. You can sit right down
in a house or a business too for that matter.
Speaker 11 (33:58):
Yeah, right, commercial spaces as well your laptop.
Speaker 1 (34:00):
Yep, and just create it all right there on the screen.
Speaker 10 (34:04):
Yes.
Speaker 11 (34:05):
Now, occasionally we have larger projects that require more time,
and so we'll meet them or I'll schedule another appointment
for them to come in at our showroom located don
in Columbia and then we'll go over everything there, right,
But for the most part, the appointments are done in
their home. It takes about an hour to two hours
and they get to see what the design is.
Speaker 1 (34:27):
So how often do you go in Alexis and maybe
they've got well I'm guessing maybe in a lot of
cases they don't really have any idea. They just know
they need something.
Speaker 11 (34:36):
I guess, right, Yeah, I mean occasionally people will have
Pinterests pulled up or their favorite you know, pictures or inspiration,
but for the most part, they're looking for us to
give them that education on what would work best for
that space, and taking their inventory, really seeing what they
have in the space is also part of that. Being
(34:57):
able to tell them, like, this is what's going to
work best for what you currently have. If you're willing
to edit, you know, take some things out, then definitely
we can change some things around. Yeah, right, But if
you're wanting everything that's in here currently to fit back
in here, then this is going to be your best option.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
But it's a good time to do that, as you mentioned.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
A little editing, right, Definitely.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
A good friend of mine owns a moving company. I
guess there used to be a rule of thumb, I
think with uh with with him at least and maybe
other interior designers that if you haven't touched something in
three years or some even one year or whatever, then
you probably don't need.
Speaker 10 (35:34):
It, right, it should go, but we'll keep it for
I have.
Speaker 1 (35:37):
I guess.
Speaker 11 (35:38):
Yeah, there's some sentimental things that I think people hold
on to you. But for the most part, well, this is.
Speaker 1 (35:43):
Why we have a you know of one of these
these these warehouses you can rent, like on every block
in Lexington where I live, for example. Yep, every time
you're turn around or building another one. That's true. I
don't want to get rid of stuff, but so and
to be now you do. You were telling me before
the show that if somebody just wants things organized, you've
got folks you can refer them too. But organization is
(36:05):
y'all build, y'all sign.
Speaker 11 (36:07):
So we design and build so that they can be
more organized. I partner with someone quite often neg or
Meg with the neat method. She'll come in after and
actually put everything away for them. But I create the
space so that they have that ability to be more organized,
more shelving, more drawers, that sort of thing.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
And I guess this could go from fairly simple to
fairly complex.
Speaker 11 (36:31):
Correct, right, Yeah, I think most of the time people
call us and they just need their wire shelving, taken
out because it's either falling off the wall or things are.
Speaker 1 (36:39):
Falling for stuff's hideous.
Speaker 11 (36:41):
Yes, it really is, especially with these beautiful custom built
homes and then they've got these wire shelves and these
closets or these pantries. So just having the material that
we do and the ability to give colors and options
to really create it and make it their own is huge.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
But okay, let me stop you there, because just a
simple person, you know, I don't know anything about design
and all this, but I'm thinking, you know, okay, it's
a closet. How many options could you have?
Speaker 11 (37:07):
I guess there are a lot, so definitely, I mean,
drawers and shelves hanging obviously are the things that most
people consider. But if you've got a big enough space,
I mean we can put an island in there. We've
got accessories like pull out hampers and jewelry organizers, ties
and belts, things to keep your stuff seen but also
(37:27):
hidden and tucked away in a more organized manner. So
it's just having the options that are correct for what
your actual items are makes a huge difference.
Speaker 1 (37:36):
I got to ask you this, Alexis, because my niece
who lives up in Charlotte. Actually purchased my sister's home
years ago when they moved. And do you see this
a lot? She took an entire it was just the
two of themy don't have any kids, so it's like
a four bedroom house. So she took an entire bedroom
and made it a closet.
Speaker 11 (37:56):
Yep. So we call that a room conversion.
Speaker 1 (37:58):
A room conversion, Right, they have a room like this? Yeah,
you and me were still relegated to well, right, how
uh do you do a lot of.
Speaker 11 (38:10):
Those I do actually, especially like in the Forest Acres
area where the homes are much smaller and they don't
have large walking closet, right, So they'll take a room
that they're not utilizing as a bedroom and they'll turn
it into a closet. That way they have the space.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
I mean, sometimes this is what you've got to do, right,
you're right, And these older homes, it just wasn't a
big deal back then.
Speaker 10 (38:32):
Yeah, that's why garage has become one more hangout spaces.
Just you win with a two cargo as you win
four hundred square feet or more more living space.
Speaker 1 (38:43):
Dimi Concrete Solutions dot Com. That's right, it's all right. There,
go see it to believe it.
Speaker 3 (38:47):
Yes, that's right, Alexis.

Speaker 11 (38:51):
Very nice to meet to you.

You can search us out WVOC Home Improvement Show of
the Midlands. You can catch up. They're all right there,
(41:20):
all right, all right, we'll wrap up on the show
today with a Jeremy Holliday mister Electric who joins us
in studio. Jeremy Moran, do you my friend?
Speaker 9 (41:28):
Good morning, Gary.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
I gotta tell you I've been I've been challenging. I've
been channeling my inner mister Electric last week week or so,
and have you Well, you have to be careful with you,
diy Electricity. I mean, I know enough to be able
to hang a light fixture. Yeah, okay, I always wind
up doing something wrong and some wire pops off or whatever,
and I got to take it all. This happened to
me just the other day, take it all back down again.
(41:51):
And anyway, there's this stuff. Listen. I know enough to
know when to stop.
Speaker 9 (42:01):
Yeah, and that's what we're here for again. Yeah, exactly.
You can always call us exactly what I'm going to know.
Speaker 1 (42:07):
I was before we came on the air here during
the break we were talking and you know, we moved
into a new house, and I know there's a lot
of outdoor lighting, but I don't heck, I don't know
if it's just not working, or if I'm not sure
if I'm doing something wrong or whatever. So you know,
we've talked about this before. This is listen. Electricity doesn't
have to be boring, right, No, absolutely no. You guys
do a lot of that sort of thing, the outdoor
(42:29):
lighting and the UH and all that those enhancements.
Speaker 8 (42:32):
Yeah, home enhancements, fun things, fun projects that you get
to enjoy after we're finished. You know, it's not all
all the hidden stuff that you don't really get to see.
But we can do landscape lighting.
Speaker 1 (42:43):
We do.
Speaker 8 (42:44):
We actually use a product that is UH brass comes
in different finishes and lifetime warranty on the fixtures their self.
So we use a quality, real quality product led h.
Speaker 9 (42:58):
You know LED.
Speaker 1 (42:59):
Everything's l these days, right, Yeah, it'd.
Speaker 9 (43:01):
Be strange if it wasn't.
Speaker 8 (43:02):
Yeah, But sometimes we run into it where it is
still some type of halogen or something like that, and
it's on a medium voltage system.
Speaker 9 (43:10):
The systems we install would be a low voltage Well.
Speaker 1 (43:13):
What's what's the difference there between those two I mean,
what's the advantage.
Speaker 8 (43:17):
Well, the advantages of the low voltages obviously you're saving energy,
makes sense. Yeah, yep, it's a lot safer As far
as being out in the yard, in the ground, running
from light to light.
Speaker 9 (43:30):
Tends to last longer. The led uh low voltage.
Speaker 8 (43:36):
Definitely lasts longer than the halogen halogens can be problematic,
so LEDs.
Speaker 1 (43:43):
I mean, those things are supposed to last like almost forever,
aren't they.
Speaker 9 (43:46):
I mean, yeah, yeah, they last a long time.
Speaker 8 (43:48):
I mean you're talking thousands of hours, thousands and eighty thousand,
fifty thousand hour bulbs, you know, so if you uh, yeah,
they last a lot longer, so a lot less maintenance,
you know, right, Yeah, there's a lot of you don't
you know, there's a lot of different You can place
them anywhere, you don't. You know, you don't have to
trench super deep for the wiring because it's low voltage wiring,
(44:12):
so it's ok. Really you're really able to put them
anywhere you want.
Speaker 1 (44:15):
I mean, it would look bad, but I mean you
could basically lay this thing's just on the front on
the grass. You could.
Speaker 9 (44:20):
I wouldn't recommend that.
Speaker 8 (44:21):
We normally, you know, get it covered up an inch
deep or two inches you know underneath everything doesn't need
to be you know, eighteen inches like medium wearing.
Speaker 1 (44:33):
Oh okay, that's a big difference right there.
Speaker 9 (44:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (44:36):
So it sounds like you probably come out and lay
these things and lay the saw back over to whatever,
and you never know you were there.
Speaker 3 (44:42):
That's right.
Speaker 8 (44:43):
Yeah, very cool and some pretty cool fixtures they have.
I mean, we have a whole catalog. We bring a
bring a book with us, an iPad. We call that
our book, but it's an iPad and it has a
catalog on it and you can see all the different fixtures,
pick them out, you know, the style you like. We
can go over all that with you the placement and
(45:04):
h or repair what you have.
Speaker 1 (45:07):
You know, a typical I always ask this question on
the show, and I know there's no typical anything, but
you know, more than likely when you guys go out
and do one of these jobs like this, I mean,
what kind of timeframe are we are we talking about
from somebody that has nothing and you want to you know,
go the whole night. You want to get it. You
(45:28):
got to get the maybe I guess maybe the controller
or whatever or or cook to the app or however
it's done. Mean, is this a one day kind of
job typically or.
Speaker 9 (45:37):
It can be and a lot of times it probably is.
Speaker 8 (45:39):
Yeah, depending on the guys, you got, how many fixtures
you got to install?
Speaker 9 (45:42):
R how big the project is.
Speaker 8 (45:45):
Uh, there's some houses it might take two or three days,
depending on.
Speaker 1 (45:49):
Some people get pretty extravagant.
Speaker 9 (45:50):
Yeah you can.
Speaker 8 (45:51):
And you know, if it's all yeah, you know, earth fixtures,
I guess I could say not implanted into the walls
or up on posts.
Speaker 9 (46:01):
And stuff like that.
Speaker 8 (46:01):
You know, it should typical installs should be probably about
a day.
Speaker 9 (46:05):
It should be able to get in and out of there.
Speaker 1 (46:09):
But it's more than just lights. When we come to
home enhancements. Yeah, this is a wide variety of things,
and I'm not sure that we quite understand, you know,
what all is possible in our homes these days.
Speaker 9 (46:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (46:21):
So ah, man, you're talking smart switches, you know, where
you can program your lights to come on at a
certain time, turn them off from different locations.
Speaker 1 (46:30):
And we're not talking about smart plug now, we're talking
about the actual switch, the wall.
Speaker 9 (46:34):
Sense the switch in the wall for your lights. That's right.
Speaker 8 (46:38):
You can get smart receptacles also, you know, we put
in a play. Okay, with Christmas coming up, there's actually
one that we like to install, which is a plug
in play, but just so people know it's out there,
you can buy.
Speaker 9 (46:50):
It's a really cool module.
Speaker 8 (46:52):
You can plug into your wall and then you can
control it on an app on your phone right where
you don't have to unplug that Christmas tree. You can
just turn it off with your phone, you know.
Speaker 1 (47:01):
Yeah, now I have done that with just a regular
smart switch and Alexa before, and that's that's cool.
Speaker 8 (47:06):
Yeah, that's a cool little feature. So there's little things
like that. We can put a three way switch anywhere
you want to if you have a situation where you
wish you could turn a light off at a point
that you don't have a switch there. With with smart
switches where you don't even have to do any wiring,
you know, we can put like a remote switch with
(47:27):
a ten year battery and put a master switch if
you will, where the where the switch location is for
that fixture, and then you have two locations where you
can turn it on and off without a lot of
sheet rock damage or crawling through the attic and things
like that. So there's there's a lot of little things
(47:48):
like that lighting. Obviously they've got lighting now that's rgb
W where it'll do a million plus colors.
Speaker 1 (47:58):
I love those. My wife is like, no, we're going
with white. I'm like, oh, that's boring.
Speaker 9 (48:02):
Yeah, well it's fun on the holidays.
Speaker 1 (48:04):
Well that's what I told her. How cool would it
be to have you know, red and green lights on
Christmas or you know, orange for Halloween coming up here
in a couple of days or whatever. And she's very
traditionalist when it comes to that sort of thing, so.
Speaker 9 (48:15):
That's wrong with that.
Speaker 1 (48:16):
When she's not there, I turn on right.
Speaker 9 (48:18):
Yeah, we'll put them in.
Speaker 8 (48:20):
You won't ever know there you go perfect, perfect, You
can keep them on white.
Speaker 3 (48:26):
But you know we do.
Speaker 9 (48:29):
So light under cabinet lights, that's another one.
Speaker 8 (48:31):
That's another great to your home, you know, accent lighting,
toky lighting, stair lighting.
Speaker 1 (48:38):
Oh okay, to stairsteps, Yeah, that sort of thing. Yeah, yeah,
I don't know I'm familiar with because like in the
house we have now there's space over the cabinets and
I want to run some LEDs up there or whatever.
But I didn't think about that in the cabinet lighting.
But that's a that's a that's an ideas. Time has come,
hasn't it. Oh? Yeah, Yeah.
Speaker 8 (48:58):
They make so much great products out there that you
can that aren't that hard to install anymore. Really, you know,
puck lights you can put in your cabinets level and
those would be all low voltage.
Speaker 1 (49:08):
Also, yeah, we.
Speaker 8 (49:10):
Fabricate lights on the scene, so really yeah, we build
uh strip lighting at your location and install it so
for under cabinet lighting.
Speaker 1 (49:22):
Very cool, very cool. Are there any things that maybe
we as homeowners and consumers haven't really thought of that
is that you can do these days?
Speaker 3 (49:33):
Well?
Speaker 8 (49:33):
Yeah, you know, like I'm saying, the three way switches,
the you know, all the stuff we've talked about, you
can do drawing a blank now, Gary.
Speaker 1 (49:49):
Trust me, I draw a blank probably four or five
times already the last hour.
Speaker 8 (49:53):
You know, anything you can think, I would say, anything
you could think of, it's worth calling and asking getting
in a and that's to come out and look at it.
Because there's a lot of stuff we can do in
set lighting in the walls, different different pathway lighting. If
you you know, you can put track in the floors,
(50:13):
you can put track on the walls and have your
you know, different different types of lighting can be put
in for.
Speaker 1 (50:23):
It sounds like if if you can can dream it up,
but you guys can find a way to make it happen.
Speaker 9 (50:27):
Basically, Yeah, most of the time there's there's a way.
Speaker 1 (50:30):
Yeah, so very cool.
Speaker 2 (50:32):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (50:32):
And you know this is not really related to this discussion,
but I know it's one we've had in the past.
Something else you guys do and uh, and that is
when it comes to things like smoke detectors, two detectors
and such. And I didn't realize that. Again, we were
this new home and we'd had this discussion before, so
I wasn't shocked to discover how many smoke detectors are
(50:56):
in this house I'm in right now. I think a
lot of us are we So, oh you need water
maybe two or whatever. But I think we've talked about
this before. Yeah, that's really not enough. And this is
something you guys do as well.
Speaker 8 (51:06):
Yes, and we do smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, fire alarms.
Speaker 1 (51:11):
All of that.
Speaker 8 (51:12):
And yeah, they're very They're an essential part of your
home because they if you ever read the statistics which
I'm not gonna go over, but you can read the
statistics about home fires and people to get harmed most
of the time they don't have smoke detectors, or they
have smoke detectors that they've uh disengaged, you know, uh
(51:33):
and and and so they're very important. And I imagine
being that you just got into your home, those are
all probably new.
Speaker 1 (51:41):
Yes, certainly we've all been put up. It's not a
new home, but they all look to be very new.
Speaker 8 (51:45):
And they're they're everywhere, Yeah, everywhere, Like wow, in every
bedroom outside the vicinity of every bedroom.
Speaker 2 (51:51):
Is that?
Speaker 1 (51:51):
And this is not a new build we moved into,
but a new build homes these days? Is that?
Speaker 9 (51:55):
Is that a code now or that standard?
Speaker 1 (51:57):
Yes?
Speaker 8 (51:57):
Okay, yeah, so that's us something that has to happen.
And for the reason for that is just to forget.
Speaker 1 (52:03):
We're not talking about one or two. We're talking about yeah,
a lot of them.
Speaker 8 (52:05):
I mean you're talking on a on an average home,
you're probably looking at six to eight in there.
Speaker 1 (52:12):
Yeah, you know, yeah, and certainly older homes. You're probably
thinking saying, what, I don't have that many?
Speaker 9 (52:17):
Yeah, they used to.
Speaker 8 (52:18):
I think the code was back in the seventies was
just one yeah, and maybe one on each floor. It
was like wow, we got a lot. But now they're everywhere.
Speaker 1 (52:28):
Yeah, they really are. And that's again something else that
mister Electric is going to help you with that. And
of course the safety check should do with every visit.
