(00:10):
We're back. It's the Craigway Showwith Hall of vame broadcaster and voice of
the Texas Longhearts Craig Way back hereon a yacht rock Wednesday. Even when
Craigway is not with us in studio, he still is with us in Oh
he's actually on the hotline. Okay, well never mind, Craig Wait actually

(00:31):
with us here on this yacht rockWednesday because Texas Baseball has a new head
coach and that's big enough news forCraig to join us from his vacation out
on the East Coach. Craig, how are you doing? How is the
beach? The beach is wonderful.I'm not actually sitting on the beach because

(00:52):
it's it's part of an island, and if I were on the island,
I might have a little trouble withmy connection. So you know where I
am right now, Cam, I'msitting in my car in a Walmart parking
lot in North Myrtle Beach. Ilove that. The only thing that would
have been better if it was maybea bilo or a food line or a
Hair's theater. Well, food line'sclose by. That's our chory, Linda,

(01:15):
and I like to stop off atfood Line at least once a day
just to see if there's anything weneed. We picked up a birthday cake.
You know, my youngest son,Jason just turned twenty five, and
we picked up a cake. Ratherthan make a cake, we picked up
a cake. And every year foodLion does these cakes and they're in the
shape of a crab. Now it'sa chocolate cake, but it looks like

(01:38):
a big, red, giant crab. So we did that last night after
dinner, so we had I said, hey, we got crab cake.
And Jason's like, does it reallytastes like crab. I'm like, no,
it just looks like a crab.So yeah, those are the kinds
of things I do on vacation.Yeah, on the East Coast, where
you can find a crab the shape, or to find a cake the shape
of a crab. Right, yeah, exactly, it works. Okay,

(02:01):
Andrews and Wills here with us,of course, Craig and I'm gonna throw
it on the bus because it isa yacht rock Wednesday, And turns out
he does not like yacht rock.Well, first of all, he's feel
informed about it, let's just saythat. But but I don't I've heard

(02:25):
a couple of your I've listened toa couple of uh, you know,
comebacks from segments, and what you'replaying it might just barely qualify as yacht
rocks because because what we're not hearingis we're not hearing anybody from the Mount
Rushmore of yacht rock. We're nothearing Kenny Loggins. We're not hearing Christopher

(02:47):
Cross. Oh yeah you did dothat, You did do that. Yeah,
he's on the he's on the MountRushmore of that. And then there's
and then there's Toto of course, but of course godfather of yacht rock is
Michael McDonald. So there needs tobe like I Keep forgetting or something like
that, you know, that hasto be if you're really gonna go serious

(03:10):
yacht rock. Some Steelee Dana hotrock too, some some is and and
there's some other there's some other tunesthat are yacht rock as well. So
there's some offerings out there for you, my man, Zim. It's it's
out there for you. Just Justopen up your mind and your heart to
the to the beauty and the smoothnessof yacht rock, and it will reveal

(03:31):
itself to you. One more thing, Craig before we talk about this Texas
Baseball higher. You know, Iknow you're on vacation, but turns out
your car here, Craig, hascaused quite a kerfuffle with our fellow iHeart
employees, because it turns out youhave taken the space of someone in the

(03:52):
building, and because of that, they have taken the space of another person
in the building. And it's it'scaused all this commotion. Who knew,
Craig, that you cause all ofthis stuff? Well, on vacation.
Well, there's a couple of thingsin play there. First of all,
I didn't park that car there.Jason did, my son, Okay,
he parked it. Secondly, Ididn't see any labeling on it that that

(04:13):
they belonged to anyone in specific.Had I known, I probably would have
had him whose spot did I take? Or would did Jason park the car
in the spot of our wonderful engineer, Chip Jealouson Really? Okay? Well,
Ship's a good guy, So nowI do feel bad about that.

(04:33):
You know, some other people inthe building I might not have felt as
bad about. But Chip's a reallygood guy, So I do feel I
do feel some remorse about having donethat. Great way the troublemaker. I'm
telling you we can settle this alloff flood. Now, let's talk about
what people want to hear, andthat is Jim Schloawsingle Craig since calling Texas
baseball. This will be just thethird new head coach in program history.

(04:57):
We knew this, it's a possibilityafter the news of David Pierce parting ways
with the university. But how aboutCDC once again pulling off something big like
hiring a coach from your biggest rivaljust down the road. Well, and
I understand, and obviously you know, I've seen a lot of the social

(05:20):
media blow back off of this, and and I've watched the press conference today,
so I understand where a lot ofthe feelings are going to come from
from Aggie Faithful and this will thiswill mean scant little to them. But
I will tell you this, ifif this was about this was about CDC

(05:44):
going after a very successful head coachwho happens to be one of his best
friends in the world. And ifthat coach had happened to be the head
coach at North Dakota State or Elonor Florida A and M instead of Texas
A and M. He still wouldhave gone after it. The fact that

(06:08):
it's Texas A and M is whatcauses obviously all the excitement, the turmoil,
the conjecture of the conversation. Butin CDC's mind, he was going
after to hire a guy that hefeels can take Texas baseball to the next
level. Not necessarily and not evenprimarily because the guy happened to be ninety

(06:32):
miles away. That happens to bea very happy coincidence. It didn't work
out, obviously in twenty sixteen atCDC was not the athletic director when coach
Pearce was hired. If CDC hadbeen at Texas at that time when slas
Agles at TCU, I think hewould have been target number one. It's

(06:54):
because he knows what he can do. The record speaks for itself in terms
of his wins and loss and whathe does with programs. That's part of
what has agunation all upset. Icompletely understand that because the guy was very,
very successful and but but it wasit wasn't about the fact that he
was in college station. That happensto be the coincidence and what causes all

(07:17):
the all the uproar it's about thefact that he wanted to get one of
his best friends, who's a reallygood baseball coach, to be the next
coach at UT So, Craig, you watched the press conference today. If
you were in that room, what'sa question you would have asked coach Lashnagle?
Is there anything left? Was therea rock that was left unturned?

(07:41):
I think I think he pretty muchaddressed, you know, all elements of
it. You know, I didfind it interesting that I don't know if
you guys, because I know alot of those guys, in fact,
the vast majority of those guys whowere asking the questions, and I did

(08:01):
find it interesting. There is apretty clear delineation and I totally understand this
that the questions that were asked ofhim, in specific about the Pine Line,
when did he visit with CDC,When did he meet with CDC,
When did he decide to take tothose were all asked from the reporters from
the Brasses Valley, and it's understandable. The ones about his staff and players

(08:28):
and program building, they were askedby the Danny Davis's and Cedric Golden's and
the local TV news reporter, sportsanchors and reporters as well. I did
pick up on that, but Ithink they covered everything pretty much from stem
to stern. Craig, you've beenon this program a long time. You
understand how important it is for pastand current and former players to be a

(08:52):
part of the program, not justwith baseball, but obviously with football.
You see it all the time withbasketball, and how Rodney Terry has gotten
past players to come out and supportthe program that speaks to the team.
And that was the point of emphasisfrom Jim Slosting today during his press conference,
and from what I understand, therewas a handful of past Texas players
who attended the press conference. Asit seems it's really slashed as prerogative to

(09:16):
give the program back to the players. Well, that is a part of
the recipe for success. And Iwill tell you that either the first person
I really heard and saw do thisreach out to the past players was Mac

(09:37):
Brown, and he was the onethat had the line from Coach Royal about
getting the BB's all back in thebox and making it a powerful thing.
It happened with basketball and Rtia's beenable to do that and in a tumultuous
time, Vick Shafer has clearly donethat with women's basketball in a tumultuous time

(10:00):
and now it's schloss has turned andI think he's to do it. And
I think there's a lot of people, the former players who are very very
excited about this, and that's whyI think he saw them there as well
as some current players, and yousaw other student athletes and the coaches from
the other sports. That's that wholealignment thing at work. That the big

(10:24):
three, the three Musketeers, thetriumvirate of Kevin el Type and Jay Hartzel
and christ Doconzi. That's the powernexus of athletics at the University of Texas.
Those three individuals that are pretty powerfulentity. CDC deserves mad props an
incredible credit for what he's done.He probably would be the first to tell

(10:46):
you that it's the alignment with theother two that makes it all really really
gel and work well. Before letyou go back to your vacation the Walmart
parking lot right now on the Eastcoast. Have you have you played any
golf, Craig, what your golfschedule like? You know, I'm very
fascinated with when you're gonna tee itup and where I'm gonna play tomorrow morning.

(11:07):
Love it uh and uh and andI have not had a chance to
play yet, so I'm gonna playtomorrow morning. I am gonna play next
week. Uh. Now that's afterbecause Saturday, Lynn and I drive up
to Greensboro for the n SMA theSports Cash for the Year banquet thing,
and we'll be up there, uhfor for three days. And I'm serving

(11:28):
on a panel discussion with Kenny Albertfrom Fox and a couple of other play
by play with Chuck Cooperstein will beon it as well from the Mavericks.
Uh. We're we're sort of inon a panel discussion on Monday, and
then I'll be back down here onTuesday for a few more days, and
I plan to play another day uhdown there. Uh. My other son
Andy will be in town for afew days then and we plan to play

(11:52):
so a couple of times. Anyway, I did bring the golf clubs and
I do plan to get on thegolf course. Awesome. Well, good
to hear, Craig, and thanksso much for taking some time I'm out
of your vacation to talk with usand talk some Texas baseball to lend in
the family. I said, Hi, enjoy the time off, enjoy the
golf, and see you in afew weeks. Caam. There are Bojangles

(12:13):
everywhere there, everywhere here. NowI've done mainly I've stuck to port and
barbecue and seafood, but I willhit a bow Jangles and I'll send you
a photo at some point, becausethere are bow Jangles on virtually every corner
down here in southern North Carolina andnorthern South Carolina where I'm habitating, up

(12:35):
and down the Grand Strand. Andyou've had some cookout too, right,
We did cookout on the way in, and so yeah, we're checking off
all of those things. Also. Will and I have this collection work and
where we collect pancake houses and they'vegot about fifty of them up and down
and we've hit a lot of themover the years of This is her sixth

(12:58):
trip here to the Greater Myrtle Beachat North Myrtle Beach, and we actually
stay in Sunset Beach, just acrossthe state line in North Carolina. But
we kind of, you know, collect pancake houses. So there's a couple
more we got to check off thelist. Good. Well, that's why
we worked together so well. Craigis because we both like food and we

(13:18):
both like the same places together. So enjoy the food, enjoy the beach,
enjoy the golf, and we'll checkin with you later. I'll keep
in touch fellas and appreciate you guysfor carrying it on and carrying it forward,
and I'll be back in on Monday, July eighth. Awesome thought to

(13:41):

still working. We'll continue the conversation. We're going to hear more from Jim
Schlosnegele more about this Texas baseball hiringin the next hour. We'll play the
rest of his comments. Craig didn'tmention there was a handful of Texas A
and M reporters in attendance for hispress conference, and of course asked him

(14:05):
a lot of questions about how hehandled a decision to move to Texas,
the timing, all that more,We're going to play it for you.
But up next, the NBA Draftis actually in a few hours. Folks,
do not know any of the playersbeing drafted, Well, don't worry
