Speaker 1 (00:00):
How we how we get to where you know, Matthew
McConaughey and we have been talking about for a long time.
I don't know how we get there, but clearly we
used to mock uh the idea that politicians were unwilling
to call each other liars. We used to mock that
all time. I mocked. I thought it was crazy. And
my opponent has said something that I don't think matches

(00:20):
up with the facts, as the way they've been talking
for like most of the last two hundred years, they
wouldn't just call each other a liar. Well, now we've
learned what happens when you get into a conversation where
you just stand there and call each other liars, or
call each other evil, or assign the worst worst motives
to your opponent always and it just doesn't work. It

(00:41):
reminds me of when we had a um we should
do this again sometime because it was great. We had
a marriage counselor panel in studio and we had like
six different marriage therapists and one of them said, and
they all agreed, nice it up, just nice it up.
Just be a little nicer, be a little more polite
to your wife, your husband. Instead of you know, just

(01:01):
the sarcastic tone or a little short or whatever. Just
nice it up. It's amazing how much smoother everything goes
if you just nice it up a little bit with
co workers or spouses or kids or whatever. And that's
what we've lost in politics. Nobody nices it up. It's
the exact opposite. I'm gonna call you a hitler out
of the gate, tell everybody you're a liar. And the
only reason you think that is because you're bought on

(01:23):
whichever side for whichever issue, not that you could actually
have that belief for some reason. And and it's just
it's not working. I think we've done the experiment now
for however long it is, fifteen twenty years, and it's
not working. Boy, hitler, right out of the gate. That's
a strong start. So nice it up. We gotta nice
it up. The wonderful thing about the free market, whether

(01:45):
it's the free market of ideas or or you know,
your your financial market, whatever, the commerce um is that
the free market solves problems, and it almost always solves
problems with very light regulation. Um. The frustration is that
it takes time to solve them. And what I think

(02:06):
we're seeing is the free market of ideas rejecting what
Jack was just describing to to a significant extent. I mean,
we haven't won the day, but it feels like it's happening.
How we got off track, though, is I think it's
worth recognizing specifically and in a huge part of that
is the enormous profit. And I'm talking about running a website,

(02:31):
running a social media site, a talk radio show for instance, uh,
or or a political party or campaign. There is enormous
profit in whipping up anger and hatred and division. It works,
and it works like crazy, or it has worked like crazy,
I should say. And I hope the free market of ideas,

(02:54):
including what Mr McConaughey expressed, whether you agree with them
or not. Uh, there are a lot of people who
think like that. I'm being the free marketplace of ideas
is saying, WHOA, now we see what we have wrought by.
The only way you get primaried is by being reasonable. Um.
And I hope there's a transition taking place. I don't know.

(03:18):
Those who profit from hatred and division and anger ain't
going to give up
