Speaker 1 (00:00):
Gorden Bird here with Beyond the News. Of course, the
impact of Hurricane Helene has been all over the Tampa
Bay area. Places that are at the beach, you know
about that, they're being featured on the news every day.
But many other neighborhoods, neighborhoods near the Bay and other
areas have been impacted as well by Hurricane Helene and
(00:21):
by the storm surgeon flooding that it brought, and people
are still dealing with those issues and one of the
local nonprofit organizations is trying to help out. We have
Gina Roth on the line. She is a third vice
president with the Tampa Women's Club and they're actually putting
on a free spaghetti dinner for people in the Tampa
(00:43):
area who've been affected by Hurricane Helene. And that's happening
as we speak this coming Monday. Gina Roth, welcome to
Beyond the News.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Well, thank you for having me so.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
Tell us about the event you've got set up so
far it's going to be happening Monday, and give us
some details on when and where and what's going to
be offered up.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Well, we're going to put a spaghetti dinner on for
all the residents who's ever been affected by this hurricane,
who needs assistance, who needs just a horn a hot
meal in some warm words, We're going to have spaghetti
and las Agunda has been Lasagunda Bakery has been most
(01:28):
kind in donating twenty five loaves of bread for us
to accommodate this meal. And we're going to do a
drive in where you drive in, tell me how many
meals you need. We're going to give them in a bag,
or if you're walking because you don't have transportation, we
have a place for you to sit down and enjoy
(01:49):
a nice hot meal. And it's October seventh from five
till whenever we run out of food, and we're preparing
for about three hundred if not more.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
And that's great that las Agunda is helping you out.
I used to live in a neighborhood where it was
close enough that I could go and pick up a
fresh loaf from las Agunda in the morning, and that's
always that's always quite.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
An experience and quite a treat, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Yes, And they've been most generous, And let's talk a
little bit about well, before we do that, let's get
out the location where that's going to be taking place
where people can drive through and get that spaghetti dinner.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
It's twenty nine to one Bay Shore Boulevard, right on
the corner of Beta Bay and Bay Shore. Come right
through the back parking lot and you won't have to
get out of your car, or if you prefer, go
ahead in and sit down in some air conditioning and
enjoy your meal.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
Now, tell us about the experience in South Tampa. As
I said, we've heard about what it's been like on
the beaches. Thinking about all those neighborhoods that are close
to the water around by West Shore and going down
and around by Bay Shore and Davis Islands and Harbor
Island and Balmeto Beach and all those areas that are
(03:13):
close to the bay, it's been a challenging experience for
them as well. Tell us about some of the stories
and some of the anecdotes and experiences you've been hearing
about from your members and from the community.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Oh, well, we're hearing the most horrible things. They've lost everything.
The kids have lost all of their belongings, clothing, you know,
on gandy as Brookdale Manor and they were evacuated and frightened.
The elderly were frightened there. But the most of all
(03:51):
is the devastation. I've lived here all my life and
I've never seen the devastation this storm has produced. Gives
you a new perspective on mother nature, and we definitely
need to heed the warnings when these storms are approaching.
I think it definitely secured everybody's thoughts on that. But
(04:15):
we're hearing about our own members that have lost their homes.
They've rescued their grandparents, rescued their aunts. Nobody thought this
was going to be as so tragic as it was,
and it was one hundred miles off shore. Can you
only imagine a direct hit would have devastated Tampa. So
(04:38):
we do have a lot of need in the community, a.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Lot of need and knowing we're just.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Trying to reach out for that. That's all.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Knowing that there is a lot of need, and knowing
that the need is not going to all go away
after Monday. Are you looking at is your organization looking
at some future plans, some future events to provide some
services and help out the community. Have you had time
to think about what you might be able to do
(05:09):
in the future.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Yes, I think we need to provide We were thinking
of this now. We haven't gotten anything in motion because
we're working on this, but I think we need to
get in detergence and clothing and diapers and anything that
you could donate. There's so much need out there and
people have nothing now, So now's our time to step
(05:34):
up and help our community. Our club's been supported by
the Tampa Bay community for over one hundred years. Now
is our time to give back, and we are strongly
committed to doing just that.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
And once again, you're going to be giving out free
spaghetti dinners at your headquarters on Bayshore Boulevard. That's twenty
nine oh one or Boulevard, and you're starting Monday evening
the seventh at five o'clock. And as long as the
food is there and they'll be available and take out
containers and if somebody wants to sit down and they're
(06:13):
walking in, they can eat there on the spot, and
any any other information we need to get.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Out right now, I have nothing at the moment, but
I'm sure there'll be more to come.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Well, thank you for your service.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
I know what I would like to tell you. But
the ones that cannot get there, if you can call
the club, we will deliver it to you. Our number
is eight one three, eight three nine seven four five seven,
and I'm sure we will be glad to bring it
to you.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
And I'm sure that's so.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Transportation is hard.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
I'm sure that's very useful information to a lot of
people who are dealing without those challenges. Some people lost
their cars in the storm as well, of course, so
oh that's true. I really appreciate your getting the word
out to the community and certainly hope that everything goes
well with the dinner and wish you success in helping
the people of South Tampa and neighboring areas recover from Helene.
(07:15):
Gina Roth, third vice president of the Tampa Women's Club,
thank you very much for joining us on Beyond the News,
and thank
Speaker 2 (07:22):
You for having me
