(00:01):
In its earliest days, the majorfunction of radio was news. What's going
on here, beautiful? Let everybodygo, Why don't you put on a
show and charge of mission? Okay, so I would say something with music
(00:25):
and comedy. Now you're talking. It will be a show for everyone who
loves music and murder. Come on, chaps, we got it a show
to dude, showtime. Are youready? I'm ready? You baby ready?
Job? Good morning Thursday, RightThursday, Thursday, Yeah, one
(00:47):
day closer to the weekend. Andthanks for listening. It is Washington's Classic
Rock Big one hundred and six nineBig Rock Mornings. Jackson hearing Mike scrape
a little ice off the windshields thismorning, burm It was snowing when I
left yesterday. Cold out. Yeah. I really wouldn't know, to be
honest with it. I go garageto garage, which sometimes I love and
(01:10):
sometimes I hate. I think youwould drive it outside. Well you By
the time I get outside the heating, my cars all nice and toasty,
and they just drive into work andthey pull into another garage. You know.
I walk down to a garage it'slike sixty degrees, pull into another
one that's like sixty degrees and I'mlike, I think it's cold out.
No, I'm not going to complainabout it. To be honest with you
(01:32):
that that's one of the worst thingson planet Earth is getting up super super
early and going to warm up yourcar. Thank God for a remote start.
Whoever invented that years ago was aflipping genius to where you could just
double click and start your car frominside the house and let it warm up.
Back in the day, man,you had to walk out there.
(01:53):
And that's gonna be the story thatI tell you. Know when I was
your age, I had to goout and straight we're ass off the windshield
manually start my own car, allright. So this morning, let's see,
we got another letter for you onthe big Word of the week at
seven thirty. That's gonna be yourchance to win Stevie Nicks tickets at the
end of this week. More PeterFrampton tickets to give away. A little
(02:15):
bit later this morning, and Ibelieve we have one more shots, maybe
two more shots this week for TranssideberianOrchestra tickets. Tis the season that's coming
up on the fourteenth, so we'llhave those to give away. Hang onto
this number. It'll come in handyone night, one hundred four nine and
three one double three. It isBig one hundred. Good morning, Washington's
(02:36):
Classic rock is Big one hundred.Melt with You is Modern English. Good
morning, six twenty seven Thursday. We are kind of creeping our way up
to the weekend. Here. ThingsI know coming up just around the corner.
Frampton tickets later, trans Sideberian Orchestratickets later, and a new letter
for the big Word of the weekand your chance to win Stevie Nicks tickets
tomorrow. That new letter coming yourway just about an hour from now.
(02:58):
We'll do that seven thirty story thismorning by a woman that choked on a
piece of turkey. And that's somescary stuff. Man. I remember being
a kid and it was I wantto see at my grandmother's house and she
had a bunch of friends over, and there was a kid that was a
couple of years older than me.There was like, you know, son
of one of my grandma's friends.I guess. Anyway, he started choking
(03:22):
on a piece of chicken or something. Dude, that was frightening, Like
they couldn't get it. They weretrying to heim lick. It wasn't coming
out. His face was turning blue. I was like, he's just gonna
die right here in front of allof us, isn't he like scary stuff?
This woman got this stuck, couldn'tget it out. So she You
know, you can give yourself theheimlick, like a back of a chair,
(03:42):
corner of a counter or something likethat. You gotta put some force
into it, though, But Isuppose if you're about to go unconscious and
never wake up again, you dowhat you gotta do. She took a
toothbrush and shoved it down her throatto dislodge it. Hey, it worked,
got her breathing again. Here's theproblem. She swallowed the toothbrush,
(04:08):
and she has a habit of doingit. I mean, the bonuses,
she's alive, and uh, therewas an old lady who swallowed a spider.
She used to do with a toothbrush. She jammed the dull end of
the toothbrush down to esophagus to tryto clear the obstruction. It worked,
it dislodged the turkey. She wasable to breathe. The bad news is
(04:28):
she also swallowed the toothbrush. Shetried to hang onto the bristles of it,
but lost it. When the turkeywent down, the brush went down
with it, and she had togo to the er, where they did
not believe her at first, butthen took an X ray and we're like,
oh, yeah, you swallow atoothbrush. They sedated her. Good
news is it only uh well,it came out the way it went in,
right. They didn't have to doany sort of surgery on her.
(04:51):
They were able to fish it backout through her mouth, but took him
about forty minutes to do so.So what was everybody else doing at thanks
Giving dinner while she was choking onthe turkey? Well? I don't know
if she necessarily choked on turkey atThanksgiving dinner because it doesn't really say in
the story, just says she chokedon a piece of turkey. Hell,
I don't know, JustGiving didn't thatwhat's her butt from the mama's in the
(05:15):
papas? What's her name? Mama? Cast? Didn't she die choking on
a ham sandwich? That's that's anurban legend, But I'm gone with it,
dude, urban legend. She diedchoking on a ham sandwich, That's
how she died. A toothbrust tochase it here it is right here.
Mama Cass dies choking on ham sandwich. Not true. I'm not gonna yeah
(05:39):
right there, dude. If it'son the internet, it happened. That's
that's a good point. It's onthe face tubes, the innerwebs, it's
it happened. What was the Howdid she really die? I think it
was it was hard and where didyeah? But where did the ham?
(06:00):
Did she have a heart attack whileshe was eating the ham sandwich? Probably?
I bet you, I bet you. And they probably found an obstruction
because she probably had the heart attackwhile she was eating the ham sandwich.
Therefore she did have an obstruction, and because she was unable to get the
rest of the ham sandwich down.So chicken or the egg? Did she
die of the heart attack or theham sandwich? You don't know? Go
(06:23):
with the ham sandwich. The hamsandwich is definitely funnier. I mean,
oh, yeah, it's been longenough that we can say that's funny.
Right, It was a long timeago. It's been long enough. All
right, coming up here things,I know, we'll take a quick break
here, got some thin Lizzie justaround the corner, and we'll try to
get to some Queen for you injust a bit. It is big one
(06:43):
hundred. Washington's classic Crocket's a bigone hundred. There's Queen. Another one
bites dust is a big rock.Morning's Jackson hearing. Good morning to you.
It is time for things I knowthat you don't been Really I learned
them at about five thirty this morning. This was really interesting. I just
(07:08):
read this morning that you know, tennis balls were originally white. They changed
the color to yellow so that theywould show up on TV better. I
don't ever remember a time where tennisballs were white, but apparently existed.
It was TV that switched him overand it stuck. Unlike the h I
(07:29):
think it was Fox that tried toput the trailer like the laser on a
hockey puck to try to get peopleto follow the puck better. That bombed,
lasted what maybe a season. Itwas the most annoying thing ever.
Some of you might remember that youturn on a hockey game and every time
they'd shoot the buck, you'd seethis like trailing line behind it, Like
what the hell is that? Itis a federal crime to reuse a stamp.
(07:54):
My mother would be in prison ifshe knew this or if she got
caught, she was still they shouldpull stamp off an envelope if it didn't
have you know, because they geta they they stamp it. They stamp
them. Yeah, I was tryingto think of another word besides stamp a
stamp. But they stamp a stampthey put up, you know, so
there's lines through it so can tellit's been used. Isn't that why it's
called a stamp? But occasionally whatthe stamp? Yeah, but they stamp
(08:18):
on top of the stamp. Yeah, it does show that it's been stamped.
Therefore legal descent. You should stoptaking drugs, dude. I think
that's all intertwined. That's why wecall them stamps. Anyway, when they
don't have a little squiggly lines overthe top of it that shows it's been
used. She used to like pullthem off and go we can reuse that
(08:43):
one. That is a federal crime. There is a miracle drug out there
that's going to uh it's entering humantrials as we speak. That can apparently
regrow teeth. Wow. Really huh. Top toys today kids' toys have more
computer power than the Apollo eleven missionto the Moon. That is cool.
(09:09):
I actually read something similar to thata couple of weeks ago, where they
were saying, your cell phone, your iPhone, your Android, whatever you
have in your hand has more computingpower than all the computers it took to
put Apollo eleven to the moon.Yeah that is nuts. Well, it's
absolutely nuts. It's essentially a supercomputerthat you hold in your house. Oh
(09:31):
yeah, yeah, that's what didhe When I first started in radio,
had engineer. He used to goto all these conferences and things and check
out new technology, and I rememberhow excited he was when he came back
and saw like digital editing, andhe was telling us about this, You're
not gonna have to use reel toreels anymore. You be able to do
everything digitally. And I remember workingon the first one of those, and
(09:52):
the problem was they were so slowbecause they just didn't have enough computing power
to move quickly like you could withreal But he said back then, he
was like, you know, eventuallythey're not going to need you. We're
like what He's like, Oh yeah, there's can be all these recorded shows.
He's like the computers and they justgoes on and on and on,
(10:13):
and then he's the next thing youknow, he's telling us. He's like
and one day he's like, youwill have a computer and a palm of
your hand like a phone. We'relike, shut up, old man,
you're crazy. Here it is.He's probably dead by now. Oh and
I wish you were still alive soI could call him up and go,
dude, you're right. You wereabsolutely, one hundred percent right. He
was ahead of his time. Thereis no expiration date on honey. I
(10:37):
did know this one. It's theonly food that can actually last forever,
never expires him. Finally, withintwo and a half years of a Walmart
being built, any house within amile of that store will go up in
value up to three percent. Don'tknow what it is that increases your home
(10:58):
value. I don't know what itis about a Walmart, but I guess
because it's convenience. I don't know. People want to live where they can
get to stores and grocery stores andthe Walmart. Go there in your pajamas.
Yeah, but yeah, this hassignificant increase in home value of three
percent if there's a Walmart within amile. As things I know. Six
(11:20):
forty eight and coming up about seventhirty this morning, new letter for the
Big order of the week, giveyou a chance to win some Stevie Nicks
tickets. Plus we may play aroundwith the talkback. If you were listening
yesterday, my play around with thatagain. I'll give you details coming up
here, and just a bit foryour chance to win Trans Siberian Orchestra tickets.
And then a little bit later thismorning, probably around the time the
(11:41):
Dennis steps in for Sports on Tap, we will give you a chance to
win some Frampton tickets. All right, it's Big one hundred. Good morning,
Washington's Classic Rockets, Big one hundred. There, Sweet Dreams, your
Rhythmics, seven oh seven, Goodmorning. Norman Lear died. It's probably
best want to live in today's world. He was one hundred and one years
(12:01):
old. Norman Lear is the guythat created all those classic TV shows like
All in the Family, The Jefferson'smod Good Times, all those shows that
would not last a day if theywere on Can you imagine putting All in
the Family on TV in twenty twentythree. It would not last a day,
would not last an episode before theyyanked it or it was canceled.
(12:26):
Same with uh trying to think ofsome of the other ones. All in
the Family some of the Jefferson's gotpretty It was just a different time,
especially all in the family. Thatwas a different time. And don't I
don't think it would last long.He passed away at one hundred and one
years old, and that is thatis an amazing That's I always think about
(12:48):
that. Do you want to liveto be one hundred one? I suppose
if you're healthy, right, aslong as you're not like suffering every day,
a good long life is nice.Right. How many healthy one hundred
and one year old d you know? Well, he looked pretty good,
man, I mean for one andone. For one hundred and one,
I mean, obviously you're gonna haveyeah, But there's a difference. There's
one hundred and one with you know, your typical old people ailments, and
(13:09):
then there's people that are bedridden andyou know, don't know their own names
that are living, you know.So I'd say if you have a fairly
healthy life, a long life isa good life. He also helped fund
some of the classic movies with hiscash, like This Is Spinal Tap,
(13:30):
stand By Me, The Princess Bride, Fried Green Tomatoes, just to name
a few, and those first threewere directed See the Connection here by all
in the family star Rob Reiner,so they go way back. Speaking of
Spinal Tap, I saw, youknow. We were talking last week about
how there's another Spinal Tap coming out. It's gonna have all the original cast
members and there's gonna be a fewcameos in there. And one of the
(13:54):
cameos is Garth Brooks, and somebodyasked him about it, and I guess
McCartney's going to make a cameo.Elton John's gonna make a cameo. They'll
start filming in February. They weretrying to get it out for the anniversary,
but that didn't happen, so they'regonna start in February. No word
on a release date yet, butsomebody asked Karth Brooks recently to share details
(14:15):
and he said, nope, can't. He said he's been sworn to secrecy
in silence. But at it,I will tell you this. If you
think you laughed at the first one, this one is going to blow you
away. That's never a good sign. Though. No, come on,
dude, I don't think you cango wrong. It's not like they're trying
to remake it or do a sequelwith different actors. You can't go wrong
(14:37):
with that group. That's some funnydudes, right. I don't see how
you could go wrong making a sequelwith the same guys. How could you.
It's not like they it's not likethey quit being funny, quit being
comedic geniuses. Did you see thenew Ghostbusters? No? No, is
(15:01):
that still the original writer, director, cast members? Well the original director
is dead. Well, then thereyou go. Afteroid played a big part
where he had a big hand ingetting it made. Bill Murray makes makes
an appearance in it because it's notthem, because you're remembering the original and
(15:22):
the original was so good. That'smy fear was spinal Tap because the original
Spinal Tap is so good. DanAcrod and Bill Murray were they the lead
characters in the remake? Yes,so this is going to be the exact
same. What are those guys goingto be the leads? That's what they
said. Yes, yeah, theysaid, it's all the members are back,
and they would all be playing thesame roles. But that doesn't make
(15:43):
them the leads. I can't imaginewith all those people, how you can
find different leads. Well, see, that's that's that's my point. That's
what happened. In Ghostbuster. Ihave faith, have faith in Spinal Tap,
man. I have great faith inthe makers and actors of Spinal Tap,
one of the greatest movies to everbe created on God's Green Earth.
(16:07):
Still might have to go back andwatch that tonight. It's a little flashback.
It's a Christmas movie, you know. I watched it when they first
announced that they were making a newone, just to relive it, and
yeah, it's just as good asit ever was. Yeah, it's fantastic.
Let's see seven twelve coming up atseven thirty. New letter for you
for the big Word of the week, going to give you a chance to
(16:27):
win Stevin Nick's tickets. That's tomorrow. We're also going to give away some
Frampton tickets a little bit later thismorning. Florida Man coming up and Bye
week. So we would typically talkwith Tim Murray from The Big Wager this
morning, but I think we're gonnabye week, So I think we're going
to play back a little something fromat least a bit of our chat with
(16:48):
Coach Ron Rivera at DC Prime Stakesand Lobsters, which took place on Tuesday
night. Myself and Julie Donalds soonwere out there. He was actually in
pretty good spirits all things considered. It was a pleasant evening and I was
concerned that he was going to beI mean, I know I would be
frustrated, but he was in prettygood spirits. So we had a pretty
good conversation. We'll play some ofthat back before you're coming up at about
(17:11):
eight o'clock this morning and on thetalk back again. For Trans Siberian Orchestra
tickets, all you need is theiHeart app, pull up Big one hundred.
You're gonna see a microphone on there. You can push that microphone,
just tap it and it will letyou send us a message and it pops
up in our studio here. It'sthe Wonders of technology. And just like
(17:33):
we did yesterday, we're just goingto take one random talkbacker I'm still using
that word, one random talkbacker thismorning and give you tickets to Trans Siberian
Orchestra on the fourteenth of December. So all you have to do is you
can say whatever you want. Iwill tell you I'm a sucker for anybody
that gets creative. There were afew people that got creative yesterday, but
(17:56):
we do just randomly picke it,so it doesn't really matter. Just hit
talkback and just make sure that youclarify you are trying to enter to win
the Trans Siberian Orchestra tickets, sowe know that you're one of those,
okay, And at the end ofthe show or towards the end of the
show, we will choose one randomtalk back and we'll set you up with
those tickets. Sound good, gutall right, hang out of this number
(18:17):
two. It's going to come inhandy a little bit later. One eight
hundred and four to nine three onedouble O three seven fourteen is big one
hundred. Washington's classic crock is bigone hundred. In the air tonight,
there's Phil Collins, thanks to thegentleman who called in. It was postmark.
That was the word I was brainfarting on. For the life of
me. It would not pop intomy head a postmark. I go through
(18:38):
it a lot where I think ofsomething I go I can't I think of
the most common thing that's called gettingold postmark. I was saying, you
know, when they stamp on topof a stamp to show that the stamp's
been used, to show that ithas arrived to the post office and has
been sent. Postmark was going throughthis list on Reddit and found it really
(19:03):
humorous because I could relate to everysingle one of these and it was about
it was men and women commenting onthings that men do that women don't understand
and things that women do that mendon't understand. And for guys listening out
there, this is just a collaborativeeffort. A bunch of people contributed to
(19:25):
things women do. Decorative pillows. Why does a bed with two people need
eight pillows? Totally agree and theyall just get thrown on the floor in
my house? Or why does acouch for four need eight decorative pillows?
My wife will put so many decorativepillows on the flipping couch that nobody can
sit on the couch. What's thepurpose of the decorative pillows? Being mad
(19:48):
about something you did in their dream? Definitely had that one. She rolls
over and punches me. It's pissedoff of me, And I'm like,
what because she had a bad dream? I did something bad in her dream?
Another one obsession with popping pimples. Why do women love to pop sit
why? Why? Like if theysee something on somebody that come here.
(20:12):
Sharing the intimate details of your sexlife with friends sure, guys have locker
room talk about women. Get detailed, get detailed, so where like you
look at one of her friends andlike, this woman knows everything about me
because she's my wife's friend. Casuallytaking forever to get ready this is this
is big. Then acting like everyoneelse should rush once you are ready.
(20:36):
My wife is always saying that she'swaiting on me, when really I'm waiting
on her. And the conversation wherehe says what's wrong and you say nothing,
And whenever I've I've learned whenever awoman says nothing, it means something,
(20:56):
and you're never going to figure outwhat it is. It's to women
are a mystery. But then youflip over to the list of five things,
just a handful of things here thatmen do that women don't understand.
But they all make perfect sense tome. Why we hang testicles from the
back of our pickup trucks because they'recool, going to home depot for pleasure.
(21:19):
Yeah, it's awesome. Close onenostril to shoot snot from the other.
Yep cried during a great sports movie. YEP quote scarface, I don't
see anything wrong with any of these, And wear shorts with a lot of
pockets, cargo shirts. Women havebeen trying to kill the cargo short for
(21:41):
years. It's not going to happen, ladies, It's not going to go
away. It's functional. It's functionalapparel, right, And you're always asking
us to hold your keys and holdyour gum and your lipstick and your masscare
and your eyeliner. Why do youthink we have all those popockets. My
wife is like, cargo shirts arethe stupidest thing. I'm like, they're
so out of style. Why wouldyou wear those? Men still wear them?
(22:03):
I got like fourteen pair. Lovethem because they're functional, they work.
Not worried about stoll And then finallywhite the men fall asleep right after
sex. I don't know, it'sjust a guy thing makes us sleepy.
I guess. Seven thirty three itis time for the big word of the
week, letter of the day,and today the big word of the week
(22:26):
on Big one hundred two. Day'sletter is the letter S. The letter
S. Today's letter the letter Sone more letter tomorrow. Right about this
time that's going to spell a word. You can probably already figure out what
it is. Help for grabs atthis time tomorrow. Stevie Nicks tickets for
the Trans Siberian Orchestra tickets. Stilltaking talkbacks on the iHeart app. Just
(22:48):
head to Big one hundred, clickon the little microphone there, leave us
some message. Just make sure youlet us know that you are leaving a
talkback to win the TSO tickets, all right, so we know it's you,
And then we'll randomly pick one towardsthe end of the show today and
set somebody up with tickets for TransHiberian Orchestra on the fourteenth. So pretty
easy, iHeart app, Big onehundred, little microphone, leave a message
(23:10):
that'll put you in the running fortickets. It is seven thirty four.
Good morning, Region Washington's classic Crockyis Big one hundreds. Ohio, I'm
tangled up over here. What thehell is going on? There? We
go? Good morning. It isseven forty seven. We are still taking
(23:30):
talkbacks for your chance to win thoseTrans Siberian Orchestra tickets. All you have
to do is go to the iHeartapp. Pl a Big one hundred,
click on that little microphone there, leave us a message in just let us
know that you're entering for the TSOtickets, and then we'll randomly take one
of those Talk Packers. A littlebit later this morning, we'll set you
up with tickets for the show onthe fourteenth. For the Stevie Nicks tickets
Tomorrow big Word of the Week,we will have one final letter at seven
(23:52):
thirty. We'll ask you to callin if you know the word, and
that will be your chance to winthose and a little bit later this morning
Frampton tickets. These are really coolPizza Hut. Let me give you the
website before I forget. Shop atpizza hut dot com. That's a website.
Shop at pizza hut dot com. They're only doing about fifty of these
(24:14):
a day, but it's a reallycool idea, and I got me thinking
about something else. But they launcheda promotion where they're giving away doormats,
So again they do about fifty aday. You go to that website and
if you're one of the first come, you'll be the first served and you
get this free doormat that you putout in front of your house for the
holiday season. And it's basically forthe people who deliver your packages. Obviously,
(24:36):
deliveries are a vital part of theholiday season, especially in this day
and agent. If you're not sureto see how to say thank you to
your delivery driver. You throw oneof these mats out and it basically it's
got a Pizza Hut logo on it, and it says leave a box to
get a box, and it's gota QR code on it that the delivery
driver can scan for a free pizza. It's pretty cool. It'll root them
(24:59):
to a gift card where they canclaim a free pizza from Pizza Hut.
And the cool thing about this isPizza Hut is paying for the pizzas you're
not springing for it. My question, Yeah, you have to pay for
it, No, no, andthe mat is free. But there's only
like fifty of them a day,and I think they're gonna max out at
like two hundred and fifty three hundredof them. So the odds are coming
across one of these if you're adelivery driver, probably slim to none.
But the idea is cool, andyou know, so Amazon, u USPS,
(25:23):
FedEx ups, whoever. They cometo your door, they walk up,
they see this mat, they scanthe code, they get a free
pizza. Is a thank you forall the deliveries around the holiday season.
But it made me think and Ialways thought it was weird at first,
first couple of years she did it, and I'm just like, that's really
cool. My wife does. Sheputs out a whole basket of stuff around
(25:45):
this time of year, and sheputs like sodas, Seltzers, bottles of
water, and a bunch of snacksin there with a little note delivery driver,
please take one, and they wipeit out every day. And I've
looked out the window and watched, like, you know, the you know
guy from the post office, abig smile on his face as he's reaching
(26:06):
down grabbing a water and some snacks. It's like, can think about it.
Those ups guys, Amazon, guysthat're out there for sometimes, you
know, ten twelve hours a daydelivering, so little things like that go
a long way. And she said, yesterday she put out like ten things.
She's like, I put out liketen bottles of water, like you
know, ten granola bars or somecrap like that. She's like, we
(26:26):
only had two deliveries, but itwas all gone, like well whatever,
maybe they're taking something for tomorrow too. But remember those people, they do
a lot of they do a lotof work around the stem of year.
Cool way to say thank you.I'd like to try to get one of
these little pizza things though, ifanything on the stor to the mat and
take the free pizza myself. Idon't get them any deliveries, but the
(26:49):
wife gets a ton of them.God knows. It's like every other day.
We have some of our conversation fromTuesday night with the coach Ron vera
overtime live with Coach Roan Rivera.Julie Donaldson and I were out of d
C Stakes, d C Prime Stakesand Lobsters talking with Ron on Tuesday night,
who was surprisingly pretty good spirits andwe had a cool conversation with him
(27:11):
over the course of about now. We're going to play some of that back
for you coming up at eight o'clockthis morning. Dennison was Sports on Tap
a little bit later, and ofcourse Florida Man on a Thursday and again
keep those talkbacks coming. For yourchance to win the Trans Siberian Orchestra tickets
through the iHeart app, just pulla big one hundred click on a little
microphone let us know you're entering towin the TSO tickets and we'll get a
(27:32):
winner later this morning eight to sevenrather seven fifty one it's Big one hundred.
Good morning, Washington's classic rock isBig one hundred. As a boss
born in the USA, it isabout that time too. We're going to
play back a little something from Tuesdayevening. We had overtime Live with Coach
Ran Rivera, myself and Julie Donaldsonout of DC Prime Stakes and Lobsters to
(27:57):
have the hour long chat with thecoach and packed house man. There's a
lot of people out there, Abunch of the coaching staff was there,
the wives were there, and alwaysa good time and fantastic food. Dude,
I housed a monster steak out thereon Tuesday night. But yeah,
Ron was actually surprisingly considering, youknow, how the season's gone, the
(28:22):
way things have been going, wassurprisingly in pretty good spirits. And we
wrap it up. This was thelast one of the season, and I
just thought that I thought we'd playedback a little segment from that from Tuesday
night Overtime Live with Coach Ron Rivera, and it's right here on Big one
hundred. I heard it no lessthan about six or seven times surfing around
the radio dial this afternoon that Chicagohas expressed an interest in Eric b Enemy.
(28:48):
What do you think when another teamexpressed interest in one of your guys.
Are you like proud of them oryou like back off? Well,
you're a little bit of that,a little bit of both. I mean
you really are. You love tosee your coaches advance and get opportunities,
you know, and Eric's worked veryhard. He's done a great job working
with Sam. That's been one ofthe really neat things to watch has been
that development of the quarterback position forus. You know, it's something that
(29:11):
this franchise has been looking for severalyears. And when you get an opportunity
to have an arm like Sam,a guy that's you know, got a
good mental makeup, a good mentalframe of mind, and a tough,
sturdy body, I mean, youfeel good about what you have. So
you know, we'll continue to seehow it goes. We got four more
weeks to see him, you know, go out and do some good things.
Yeah, So basically we'll I mean, when it does come to Sam,
(29:33):
I'll go this way. There's alsoif you flip through every radio doll,
they're all talking about the potential draft. Could you get a quarterback?
Is Sam really the guy for thefuture? And the way the season's gone,
there's everybody that's a little bit backand forth. There's those that love
him, those that say, Idon't know that you maybe could do better
or whatever, like we're where youone just understanding. And also he's a
young quarterback hearing all of this aswell. Do you worry about that getting
(29:56):
to helm? No, because knowingSam, he probably doesn't even listen to
them. Yeah, you probably don'teven know it exists. I mean,
honestly, the thing that I've alwaysimpressed been impressed by him has always been
his focus on what the task ofhand has been. And that's really kind
of the thing that I think keepshim going is that he does stay focused
on one thing at a time.So when it does come to Eric Banamey,
there's always been interest in him takingthat next step because of what he
(30:18):
did with Kansas City and what he'sbeing able to do here. What have
you seen from what you expected fromhim? Well, you know, you
know, a multifaceted offense. Youknow, it's been tough because we've been
in some tough situations in terms ofbeing behind, and you really don't get
to see the rhythm of the gameas much as you would like to because
you're not necessarily playing where you knowyou can pull anything you want. You've
(30:40):
got specific things you got to goto when you you know, when you're
trailing. You're talking in the lastbreak about twenty seven years as coaching experience,
I have it here right, nineyears as a player. You're also
a member of the competition committee. You've seen a game change over the years.
Do you see your role changing aswell? Oh, definitely. I
mean, you know, coaching isis really become so much different because of
(31:00):
the type of player that's now comingfrom the college ranks. You know,
with this NIL program that started, this portal program that started for the NCAA,
you know, you're getting different typesof guys. Guys aren't staying in
one place and being developed by onetype of coach. You know, they're
bouncing around to different schools because ofthe portal, because of the NIL and
you're not necessarily getting a completely educatedguy into one type of system as much
(31:23):
as they're they're kind of coming toyou, and there's still some of them
still need to be developed. Soyou you have that job then basically of
you know, over the personnel ofcoaching of your staff with the players,
and you talk a little bit abouthow the game is changing and all of
that. What do you enjoy themost coaching? Yeah, what is it
about? Because the interacting. Imean, when you see somebody develop and
(31:45):
grow as a player, you seethem doing the things that you're you're you're
you're mapping out for them, that'spretty gratifying. It really is. And
you know, when when you seea guy really get those aha moments where
Okay, I get it, thisis how I do it, and then
go out and play that way itis, it is really a cool thing.
Then you really feel like you've donesome successful things. You know,
when you have guys that you knowreach their potential get to to a certain
(32:08):
level. You know, one ofthe most gratifying things for us last season
was you know, being able totell Jeremy Rees that you know he's an
All pro. That's that to meis what it's all about. So setting
your your sights beyond coaching, isthere anything you'd like to move into when
you're done coaching? Not necessarily, just I've been very fortunate to be in
(32:29):
this game for as long as Ihave and and be part of it and
be around it and contribute to someof it. That's really, you know,
been the thing that I've been.I've been very fortunate to do.
Not everybody gets to do what theywant and love what they do. I
mean, who knows, Maybe somedayI could end up on the radio.
Well I'm just wondering if I'm therewith like Terry Bradshaw run. You know
(32:50):
Jackson he started on he started inbroadcasting. Really he was just too good
at it. They said he shouldbe a coach and there that was.
That was the end of lace. You can join me. I was at
wsc R Chicago. Really. Wow, that's cool when you when you are
thinking about everything and you talk aboutthe players, and we've talked a lot
about culture and what you want tobuild. And you've also every year you've
(33:15):
dealt with something, it's COVID,it's you overcoming cancer. By the way,
congratulations on being cancer for you thinkit was three years, right,
Congratulations on that. That's a hugetestament as well. And then you have
all the outside noise of the ownershipchange, and then you have the actual
ownership change coming in the stability andthe consistency has not been there over your
four years. What would you havemaybe liked or what would you have done
(33:38):
different, having gone through everything thatyou had to try to get here.
Well, I think, you know, the hardest part, more than anything
else, is to be a consistentlygood football team, you have to have
a quarterback. And that's you know, if there was a way to find
that one guy earlier, sooner, you know, that's probably the biggest thing
that you know, if you canmake that kind of commitment, if you
(33:58):
can, you know, if ifyou're in that type of situation, that
to me, I think is somethingthat has to be done. And that's
what we're you know, obviously beenlooking for and not just the four years
that I've been here, but forseveral years. It's the one thing if
you really look at the teams thatare consistently good every year good, it's
because they have a quarterback. Youknow, we went through it in Carolina
(34:19):
for five straight years and then ourguy gets hurt, I mean tears is
Labram and pretty much that's that's theend of it. And and it's unfortunate
because you look for that guy,you try to find that guy, and
you finally get it and then havethat happen. It's tough. So if
there's one thing, you know,Julie to your to your question is,
yeah, I wish we could havefound that quarterback sooner. And you know,
(34:39):
I've got a lot of confidence inwho Sam is right now. Right,
So building around Sam, I mean, if you're asking my opinion,
and I'm sure you will later,oh yeah, absolutely, But yeah,
you're he's going to put you onthe roster for evaluation the rest of it.
And if you need somebody to talkto these guys about the byeway,
I can do that for you too. He's going to take He's going to
send them to the slopes, sothey're going to come back with a broken
(35:00):
arm or ankle. I have theage old question. I just wanted to
get your opinion on draft, right, So if you if you're if you
look at it to the team buildingaround Sam and draft comes around and you
got some good picks, do youdraft for a position or do you draft
for best player available? You know, again, see if that best player
available as a quarterback. It dependson It depends on what that position is
(35:22):
and who that guy is. Youknow. But one of the things that
that that you know that I've alwaysbelieved is that when you philosophically speaking in
the draft, find your quarterback, build around your quarterwa Okay, You've got
to be able to protect him. You've got to be able to have playmakers
there and and and that's the thingthat you have to do. You know,
this team does have five five draftpicks, all within the top one
(35:43):
hundred. Ye okay, So outof that group, you've got to find
guys that can protect them and guysthat can make place for him. Yeah,
that's the thing that you know,as you go into the draft,
you got to look at and thenon the defensive side of him, believe,
you build through the middle, defensivetackles, middle, linebacker, safeties,
and then you branch out pass rusher, you know, cover corner.
And then I see Marvin Harrison Juniorin there, and you know, and
(36:05):
I'm saying, yeah, but onthat note, like I'm watching McLaurin and
I'm like, uh, you know, I think we all would like to
see him get the ball more. And I but I see, I was
at the game with a buddy ofmine. I see say I'm going through
his progressions. They see what he'sdoing, and I'm like, what do
you do to get you know, one of your best players more involved in
the game. Is it designed playsto make sure he's the first look or
(36:28):
is it? Well, I think, you know, as as as Sam
goes, you know, and ashe learns his his teammates and and continues
to work with them, you know, start building that familiarity, continue to
spend more time. Can you spendoff season time developing that rapport that you
could sit there and just give thelook and say, hey, look we're
gonna run a fade on this.Hey look, you know, run a
dark let me get you inside.Like the balls, I mean, these
(36:50):
are all the next step things together. Yeah, And they're all the next
step things that will happen as youcontinue to grow as a unit and learn
the little nuances of what you're doingoffensively. Right. He is caught passes
from I think ten different starting quarterbacksover his career, but I work a
lot with Santana Moss and he sayshe had I think eighteen or more.
(37:12):
He says, it's no excuse.Nobody cares who's throwing you the ball.
You just have to try to makethose plays. But of course there's a
lot that goes into that of beingable to connect, to have that chemistry
and to have the right quarterback gettingto you. So again we've got more
to get to here. Maybe wecan dive into it a little bit Moregan.
It is also the holiday season,so we want to know maybe what
Stephanie, what gifts she gave youthat was the best or the worst gift
(37:35):
on the holidays as well, sincewe already got exposed on what you gave
her, so we'll call out yourbetter half a little bit on the other
side as well. Folks. Keepit right here. You're listening to Overtime
with Ron Rivera. It is presentedby Fox, Nigmackamanda Cloud. We're live

he'll still love be on the airon Tuesdays with the Well Not Well Yeah,

think Julie will probably still chat withhim next week on Tuesday. But he's
on usually usually Tuesday morning today o'clock. Through the remainder of the season,
where we've got four games left, you got the forty nine ers, you
got Cowboys, you got Rams andJets. Is that right? Did I

(42:30):
Frampton tickets for that show coming upin March. It is eight thirty four,
Big one hundred. Washington's Classic Rockis big one hundred. Behind Blue
Eyes, there is the who.I was just talking to Dennis about Ken
Hitchcock. Yes, just a hockeycoach. Yesh. He coached Dallas and
then he coached the Flyers. That'sright, and a good coach too.
Yeah. And I was telling himoff you that I went to a hockey
(42:52):
camp one year with Hitchcock. Thatwas an experience that was really cool.
I bet it was a couple hoursa day for like a week. He's
a great guy. I know himfrom being from Edmonton. And he used
to coach junior hockey up in Canada. But he's one of those guys that
was around hockey for a long time. Well. Liked a lot of uh,
kind of soft spoken, like he'sCaptain Kangaroo. Yeah yeah, old
(43:16):
reference. Yeah yeah, sorry aboutthat, but yeah, and a lot
of success too. But one ofthe good guys of hockey. I like
him, Yeah, And it wasit was cool to like, you know,
every now and then you'd have yourrunning drills and stuff, and every
now you look up and go,holy crap, I'm being coached by a
professional coach. It's only a weeklong. It's pretty cool. No.
(43:37):
I had that experience when I didminor league hockey and play by play.
A lot of the former nhlor startedin the miners coaching before they got up
to the next level, whether itwas the American Hockey League or the NHL,
and I got the lot. Imeet a lot of greats, including
Gary Hunger, who's some older fanswill know. He played in Saint Louis
for many years. He had thatgreat flowing hair, played in Edmonton,
(43:58):
and he was one of the greats. And he was in Tulsa when I
was in Tulsa, Oklahoma for aseason, and it was a thrill to
be around him. But there werea lot of great guys that Dennis Morook,
who was of course here with theWashington Cap, was one of the
all time greats. Yeah, wasin my my league back in the w
PHL days a long time ago,in the mid nineties. But yeah,
there were a lot of guys that, you know, we're just you know,
(44:19):
that's what you have to do.You have to work through the miners
and and work your way out.But yeah, Ken was a great guy.
He was always sick. I don'twant to hear that puck on your
stick. He's like, it's pretendlike it's an egg. That was his
thing, right, He didn't wantto he didn't want to hear the pucks
hitting our rights. Yeah, softenough hands. We got Caps hockey tonight
with Dallas. Yeah they're playing Dallas. That's what's brought brought up the conversation.
Yeah, who was the most hatedDallas player of all time? Most
(44:44):
hated Dallas player? Uh and andthis doesn't include the Minneapolis team that moved
down there. You're thinking of aNo, it does include Oh does stars?
I don't know who who's the bigdefenseman Hatcher? Oh yeah, yeah,
hated who Also? Now is thatthe till he played for the brothers
because one of the Hatchers played here. A Hatcher played here. I know
(45:06):
if he had a brother or nothe was Is it Darian Hatcher Terryan Hatcher?
Yeah? Yeah, well my memoriesfailing we go. Hatcher played here,
by the way, I just do. Somebody will know. Somebody will
tell us all over the place.Yeah, somebody will tell us. Hatcher
was one of those big guys.He just he's reminds me of Pronger almost.
He was kind of just a antagonizerman. Was a hell of a
player too. Yeah, yeah,Hatcher used to. I interviewed him one
(45:28):
time and uh, I asked himabout Sidney Crosby. He just went off.
He's like that little whimp. He'slike, well, everybody feels the
same way about Sydney. He talksall this crap. Yeah, he goes
and then he can't back it upand you get in his face. He's
like, I just love to runthat guy into the board. Yeah.
You know who also was a greattrash talker? Gretzky? Was he really?
(45:50):
Yeah? He was? Yeah,he doesn't strike me as a chirper.
No, he could really. Ohyeah, he was pretty good at
it. Oh yeah, I'd loveto hear him like Yeah, but I
mean Crosby, I mean he backsup all that trash talking. I mean
he's one of the greats. Wellyeah, I mean you can't argue it,
you can't argue his play. Buthe's not a tough guy, No,
not at all. No, hetalks a lot of crap. And
(46:10):
yeah, he's got a bunch ofbig boys. He's one of those guys
that, well, we'll yeap atyou, then run away. Yeah yeah,
and then let the let the bigboys take over. I agree.
So bye weeks. There's not muchtalk about there, No no bye week.
I think everybody's just resting up andtrying to heal for the remaining games.
And then at La Rams. Imean, you know, you and
I talked about this the other day. It's a gauntlet right down to the
(46:32):
end. Yeah, it's not aneasy game left. You got forty nine
Ers, Jets, Rams, Dallas. Yeah, two of those teams are
definite contenders, right, I meananything can happen, right, Yeah,
I've seen him play. Well,Look, they took the Eagles to overtime.
Remember that. Yeah, I thinkthings were different then. I think
(46:53):
that they were still in it.And I know that Zach Selby through his
magical pixie dust and said that they'renot mathematic eliminated. He's right, but
it's right, But no, it'snot so. I think that you know,
you and I also talked about thisthe other day that what's left is
playing for pride and also maybe ajob next season, whether it's here or
somewhere else. And that goes forthe coaches too, by the way,
(47:14):
playing for you. Everybody wants tosee everybody responsoring this horrific adversity that's happening
right now with the team. It'sjust it's the no fun league. And
I think Ron really handled himself veryprofessional, like he always does. When
he was out of overtime with youand Julie and he said primestakes and lobsters.
The other night, he was fine. You know, we had all
the coaches and wives out. Listen. He's been in football for almost forty
(47:35):
years, folks, so he's beenthrough this before as a player and a
coach. It's listen, it's nofun. And he knows that. You
know, the gauntlet has come inwhere you know, heads are going to
be lopped off, and maybe histoo. But I think he made it
really clear to you guys, youand Julie though he still wants to coach.
He does, yeah, And I'dalways been warnering about that. I've
never asked him directly. He's beenin a very long time, but he
(47:58):
made it very clear a cuple timeshe still wants to coach. Because I
was trying to see if he waslooking to, you know, move into
the front office or if he waslooking to get into well. I think
I think that's been a rumor thathe would get bumped up in some advisory
role and then they'd hire a bunchof new people and all the other roles
that are the be vacant. Atthe end of the year, he still
wants to coach. You're right here, Yeah, I don't think unless something
(48:22):
really sweet comes his way, andmaybe it's a year where he takes off
a year coaching, stays with theteam in some role, and then looks
to get active again. But listen, he's still a young man compared to
a lot of the other coaches inthe NFL, and if he still has
gas and the tank. Good forhim. He's one of the good guys
in football. He just hasn't hadan overly winning record when he's been a
(48:43):
coach. Yeah. Yeah, thegrade fifteen In one year we went to
the super Bowl with the Panthers andthat was a really good football team with
Cam Newton. But other than that, nothing really sticks out as being oh,
you had all these great seasons, right, So but listen, there's
always room for Ron Rivera on yourstaff, no matter who he is.
Ye. Look, I mean it'syou know, first and foremost, like
(49:04):
as a if you're a fan ofthe team, you know, you got
to remember that every market, everyfranchise has gone through this at some point.
It happens, always happens, andyou're no different than bars. A
little bit longer than normal people becauseof former ownership. Yeah, but you
you're no different than any other city. You got to go through the rough
times for the good times to rollaround. And I think that, uh,
(49:28):
you know a lot of times justa coach, he can be terrible
somewhere, he can be terrible ona couple of different teams and then finds
the right home and blows it up. You know, the same goes for
players. Yeah, look at AndyReid in Philadelphia, right, Like the
knock on him was that he couldn'twin a big one. Yeah, couldn't
win the big one, could getyou to the playoffs, but he just
(49:49):
top Yeah, terrible clock management. You're right, and they blow him out.
Yeah, they blow him out.And look what he's done and can't
see. Yeah, it's all aboutscheme and fit. It is forever,
really is, and it is,you know, even just regular jobs,
sometimes you fit into a spot, sometimes you don't. But that really,
you're right, goes for coaches andplayers where sometimes you just don't fit into
a system so you have to moveon to the next one. And why
(50:10):
Andy Reid is probably the most perfect. That's a great example somebody who just
went somewhere else and blew it up. And he's not doing it by himself,
folks. I mean he's got agreat support staff. You know,
eb was there for for many yearsand now he's with us, and then
he's had Patrick Mahomes. I willtell you this, except for the the
odd outliers in the NFL anals ofwinning super Bowls, the Joe Flacco,
(50:34):
things don't happen often because that wasthe greatest, one of the greatest defenses
of all time when Baltimore won thatSuper Bowl Flaco. In the NFL,
if you have a great quarterback, you have a chance of winning a super
Bowl. If you don't, youprobably will not win a super Bowl.
Correct, And that's why Andy Reidhas won super Bowls because he's got a
great quarterback in Patrick Mahomes. Letme tell you, I am becoming a
fan of a certain team in theNFL. Is something about the coaching,
(50:55):
something about the players, something aboutif you had to guess what team,
that is just a team that I'mslowly becoming a fan of and going,
you know what, I really likewatching this team play fortys No god hate
okay, Dolphins, Oh yeah, they're entertaining. They are an entertaining team.
Man, if you if you werea fan of the Dolphins and entertainment
on Sunday, you would have enjoyedthat. I didn't enjoy that. But
(51:20):
you know you can't. You can'treally hate on that team. Well the
coach. The coach is fun.Yeah, the coach, he's good.
The players are different, you know. Yeah, two up is stepping up.
There's a big year for him.And he stepped up. They have
so many weapons and they're so fast. I there fun to watch. You're
right, I can see why.I can see why they're they're a fun
team to watch play football. Andby the way, they collapsed last year
(51:42):
when they were like eight and three, they lost like five in a row.
So McDaniels was just saying hard knockslast night, saying, I'm glad
we got that ninth win. Yeah, you know, it's not a thirteen
week season, but we're glad wewent over that hump. Yeah exactly.
But he's a he's a great coach, and he's from you know, he
was here at one time. Iwant to say he's in his late thirties.
He's a young guy, but youknow he came from the Shanahan Tree
(52:06):
too in San Francisco. But youknow, all those guys were here one
time. McVeigh was here and Shanahanand I had heard a long time ago
that when the dad was coaching herethat it was going to be the son
that was going to take over.Kyle was going to take over this team.
Eventually, that was the plan, and who knows what would have happened
with all those young coaches here, but of course it never came to fruition.
(52:29):
But yeah, I think Kyle Shanahanis building his own tree. You
know, you've got the mcveigh's outthere, and McDaniels and and Sirianni.
I don't think it's part of that, but it's really interesting to watch these
young coaches come up and not onlydo they relate to players and you and
I talk a lot about that, that's big, but also they bring new
fresh ideas to the NFL that areworking right now. Usually defenses catch up
(52:52):
with offenses, they get innovated anddifferent. But there's something very special about
some of these young coaches like Syrianaand Philadelphia, and Shanahan in San Francisco,
McDaniel in Miami. There's a fewmore out there. And by the
way, there's also the outliers likeDan Campbell, you know in Detroit,
who seemed like some kind of militarydude, but actually his players love him,
(53:13):
but he's all in on football, you know, and it's you know,
in the Steel ten of Detroit. They love him. They're winning finally
because they haven't done that in theyears. So there are different kind of
coaches out there that can get itdone, and they look at Pete Carroll
Seattle. He's had a ton ofsuccess. The guy's in his seventies.
For Pete's site, Oh, Iwatched him like all hunched over on the
side of But you know, he'sworking the gum all the time, he's
listening to music, he's throwing thefootball around, and he's a big cheerleader
(53:35):
for the players. So there aredifferent kind of coaches out there. And
then the guys like Mike Tomlin who'vehad a ton of success but are very
stoic and this is the way we'regoing to run the show kind of thing.
And he's had a lot of successexcept for this last year or two.
Why because he doesn't have a starquarterback. That's the only reason.
Because Mike Tomlin is a great coach. By the way, there's rumors of
him leaving Pittsburgh. Would you liketo have Mike Tomlin here kind of you
(54:00):
there's a rumor that he might wantto get out of Pittsburgh really and move
on. He's had his fill ofthe roonies telling him what to do you
want to Tomlin? Th or doyou want one of these young guys like
Sirianni Well, I take Tomlin wouldyeah, but absolutely both both. Yeah,
but Tomlin's a winner. I likehow he runs a team. He's
candid and he has success, buthe needs to start quarterback like everybody else.
(54:24):
Yeah, it's really what it comes. He had Roethlisberger for what fifteen
years? Yeah, so there yougo. Yeah, well you look at
the Patriots. Yeah. By theway, Thursday Night football tonight, Patriots
are on The over under is thirty. Who's the Patriots playing tonight? That's
how bad the Patriots are. Idon't even know who they're. Yeah,
we should look this up quickly becauseI really don't know. It's it's supposed
(54:45):
to be a really horrific football game. And it's on Amazon, and it's
on Amazon, it's on Amazon Prime. But the overrunner's thirty. Last time
an over under was around thirty. It was nineteen ninety three that the overrun
was that low. Yeah, soVegas is saying there will be no more
accumulative points than thirty tonight with twobad football teams. Yeah, and Trubisky
(55:08):
is playing for the Steelers tonight,Patriots Steelers tonight. Yeah. And I
think Zappi is for New England.I mean, Bill Belichick is just gonna
be fuming on the sidelines. Lethim ticked off. By the way,
they've only wont two games. Seearhe's done in New England's done. So
if you've got if you've got dentalsurgery planned, I do that instead of
(55:29):
watching Thursday Night football tonight. It'sgonna be bad football tonight, gonna toenails
or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, But if you want
in the background, yeah, enjoy. All right, Okay, guys,
