Alright, alright, alright, welcomeback to that episode Bring the Juice Podcast.
I got the Prezo State dp's onthe pod today, Fellas, what's
good interest Celtics to around the holdof book? You got out Hamilton also
known as a Z. Yeah, there you go, all out? Whatever
the words, Yeah, sir,Yeah, Cameron Lockert number twenty, Yeah,
(00:22):
that's CJ number two. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. The
boys are nervous right now, thevoice are nervous. Can't get too crazy
too soon, Fellas. Appreciate youcoming on Fall campus ended at this point.
By the time people listen to this, you guys are already gonna be
in Purdue pre produce. We don'tgot to get into that right now.
We'll get into it later before wecontinue. This episode is brought to you
(00:44):
apart by our friends at the AmericanPistachio Growers. If you want to perform
like the pros, eat your pistachios, eat those nuts, kids, Fellas.
One thing you all got in commonis being in defensive back, and
people don't realize dB is one ofthe hardest positions, not just in football
but in all sports. Realistically, you are trying to think for other other
(01:07):
people whilst thinking for yourself at thesame time. Okay, I'll start with
you. Everyone's gonna have to answerthis question though. What is the hardest
part about the dB position itself?I say the hardest part of buy like
the dB position is just like youjust one on one most of the time,
(01:29):
and then you gotta just win yourone on one battles, like and
you you gotta equivalent athlete and theperson you're guarding. It's just like you
can't make no mistake, there's noroom for errors. It's just really I
just feel like it's more like oneon one and you got to really use
your technique and then sometimes God likeGod, I think his course and use
(01:55):
your athletic ability. Jesus take theweek. See here what you got for
me? For me, man,it's really just consistency because man and our
job, you gotta come and doit every play, right, mess up,
everybody sees it, yep, youknow you can't cover it up.
So like for me, it's justcoming to do to your job every play,
coming in your job, every po. I love that for myself.
(02:21):
I think the mindset you gotta havebecause most of the time, you know
you're just playing man, so right, you gotta have a mindset to dominate
that another dude in front of youalways, so I think that's the hardest
thing, being like mentally prepared.I had a good interview with Charco Bears
Jayalen Johnson recently, like, likeyou said, you could have a game
where you're locking dude up and itmight be fourth quarter, getting down to
(02:46):
the nitty gritty one one bite ona fadeball, a slant, whatever it
might be, and it's like you'rethe villain all of a sudden. It's
that pressure, and unless you're gettingPBUs or pick sixes, you really not
getting that much glory if you're sittingquietly. Realistically, people don't understand the
average like fantasy football guy, theguy who just turns it on and likes
(03:08):
big touchdowns. He doesn't realize thatdude's doing an insane job, and in
a lot of football positions don't getthe credibility to deserve. You know,
I've had old Lignman on here whereyou're like, do this, dude's at
eleven year NFL VET stud might bea Hall of Famer. Half the time
people don't even half the time don'teven know I would say ninety percent time.
People couldn't name one old lineman inthe NFL man, you know,
(03:30):
and DV is part of that deal, you know. And I think it's
a confidence factor too. What wouldyou say, because you know, as
a wide receiver be on the otherside of that spectrum, like, yeah,
you've got to be confident and trustyourself and know your plays and know
your job and your assignment how toreact to what you're gonna do. Maybe
you're giving me a certain leverage showingsome kind of look, but on your
(03:51):
guys end, you got to havethat confidence, just a different swagger of
like at the end of the day, there might be a time where I'm
put in a position where it's meon an absolute island out there, and
you got to have that confidence becauseif you don't, nobody's going to have
that confidence in you. Right. So CJ will start with you on this
(04:11):
one, like what do you whatit in your life to grow confidence?
What have been some of the bulletpoints that have ultimately got you this point
to have this swagger of an elusivedB. I wouldn't even call it a
swagger, it's a confidence because youfor me, I know I'm blessed.
You know, God got me.I know I'm putting the work in at
the end of the day, Soif I do make a play or if
(04:34):
something do something to do go rightfor me on the field, it's like
not a it's not a like unusualfeeling, right because it's it's not a
mistake. Yeah, it's not amistake. It's not unusual. So knowing
that you're blessed, knowing that you'reputting the work in, that gives you
that confidence to just go out throughand be yourself and play ball. Is
(04:54):
he what you got? Are youconfident? Bro? Myself? Like,
see, I've a really a lotyet. So there's been a lot of
like learning the game of football personallylike and like technique wise, Like I
feel like a lot of that it'sbeen helping me like lose my confidence,
confidence gets developed. Quote no doubtabout it. And I mean candy for
(05:17):
you answer, Like you know,I was talking to my brothers about it
recently. It's it's crazy, likethere's different stages of sports. You know,
you start off, whether you startoff when you're two years old or
you start off when you're junior inhigh school. There hits a point where
you're everybody at one point was thenew guy to everything. You know what
I mean. I don't care ifyou're Tom Brady. There was a day
(05:39):
where Tom Brady was the newest footballplayer on a football team at some point,
you know what I mean, tothe point where it's like, okay,
you got to keep stacking up thosedays, brick by brick, gaining
those confidence points and overcomes. Butthere's levels to the And if you were
on the freshman team in high school, then you get moved up to JV.
(06:00):
That's a new level. You gottaprove it again. Whatever you did
at freshman, that's sick. Nowyou gotta do it again varsity. Your
first varsity game. I'm sure youguys remember your first varsity You're ready,
You're in there, but you gottaBut you gotta get that confidence because you
know you could do it. Butthere's a I don't care how confident you
are. You can know you coulddo it. There's a small percentage in
your brain though, that is thinkingto itself, like I know I could
(06:25):
do this, but like can Ido that this level yet? Like am
I do I belong here yet? Now? Once that first play happens,
were you read that pass correctly andpick that thing off? Now you woke
up the beast. Baby, Yeah, that's what I'm saying. But there's
(06:45):
levels to where you gotta gain thatconfidence. And even from high school to
college, obviously it's a big one, a little green out there, a
little nervous, not even games likeyour first practice, you're just like,
Yo, how's this how's this firstmeeting gonna go? How's this first one
on one rep gonna go? DoI have along these dudes fast? And
like, you know, when youcome in as an eighteen year old,
nine year old whatever the hell oldyou are a freshman, there's some growing
(07:09):
looking men in the locker room.Bro. You're kind of just like,
hey, hey, that dude's gota kid over there. But there's nothing
wrong with that, but it's definitelyit's a little bit of a different change
of just, you know, groupof dudes you're used to being around.
There's sophomores in high school, theydon't got driver's license yet, barely got
armpit hair, and now all ofa sudden, you've got growing them in
(07:30):
sixty years, got car payments, real life, you know, real life,
Kim. I feel like you gotthat confidence. What what what's developed
that confidence for you? I justfeel like when I step on the field,
it's just nobody better than me.You know, twenty two people on
the field, twenty one, itmain't better than me. So I just
(07:55):
I just want to hang my haton that. And then just going back
to live family ties. Like I'vebeen seeing this uh professional professional athletes play
uh whatever sport for like since Iwas a toddler. So I've been saying
it at a high level since Iwas a kid. So and then they
(08:16):
instilled to me, like you know, just be the best, like do
whatever, do whatever you do yougotta do to no, just be great.
And every time I just step onthe field, it's just like either
go be great or either will besorry. Just pick one. Don't be
sorry, Yeah, don't be sorryat all. Can you mentioned? I
(08:37):
mean, fam, I did myresearch on you, bro, like you
got some you got some athletes inyour family. Yeah, yeah, you
got a little reds hat on too. Yeah, so we won't talk about
it. Yeah, shout out ofit is shout out my can and my
grand my grandpa man. Yeah,so you're your grandfather's king, Griff,
you senior and your uncle's king ifjunior. Yea, I feel like that
(09:01):
all people know that. Yeah, they be shot when when they find out
and all in all, they theyjust like regular, Yeah, what was
your what was your dynamic with themgrowing up? I mean did it help
with sports having some some some studpeople that know how to compete at the
highest level. Yeah, for sure. Like just seeing just seeing them just
(09:22):
you know, be hall of famers, Like I was just like blow it
away. Like even to this daywhen I see my uncle sometimes I'm like,
god, you really like yeah, like you got shoes and stuff like
it's crazy. But like for themost part, they just won't want to
see me, dude, well andjust be great as as they did.
(09:46):
So I just I just embraced itall right. So were you going to
be a baseball player at one point? Yeah? When I was little,
I played, I played baseball.I played a lot of travel ball when
I was little played. I playedsome good play US two A couple of
them play in the league right nowMLB. But I just felt like football
was like my first love. LikeI really love playing football. I really
(10:09):
love going on dominating be like justin any like in between the game,
I get to talk stuff like that, there's for sure. Although there's been
some baseball fights lately. Attention tobaseball. I don't either, but I
(10:30):
see it on Twitter, and I'mjust like all that. Jamanderson getting dropped,
I was a man came out thenext day from the dugout with the
Boston with Floyd Mayweather ever last redsong, going yes, yes, no,
he got dropped, got dropped. He slept. The dude on the
(10:52):
Red Sox got slept absolutely obviously theWhite Sox, White Sox. Yeah No,
I like that though. I likethe physical they said. They said,
they said, the boy it's beenhad like beef for something really really
like it'd be really getting real outon that field, Like I don't.
I don't know how, but it'sbeen a couple of times I haven't been
hit by a pitch, like whenI was a youth league or a little
(11:15):
league or pop wanna something. Ijust like, can't you rush the mountain?
I ain't gonna lie one time, literal league, so one time,
like I was, I was inI didn't rush the mount personally, but
we got into like a little scuffle. Scuffles happened. One of my friends
was pitching and he hit the dudelike right on the helmet like and it
(11:39):
bounced like right like as the boywas walking. The first basically just dropped
the bat and you just see himrushed like the mound. You just see
my potting like drop his glove andI just like take off from cinefield and
like you just see everybody. Yeah, it was punch of stone and stuff
like that. But like kids,CJ, you got any you got any
(12:01):
good stories like that? Ah?Use nah man. Yeah, I come
from a really wild place, soevery day was something something different. Yeah,
something different. So just yeah itisn't it was regular wild place.
What do you mean, CJ.Give me a little insight, give give
thee peeps a little bit city. What are you from? The Paris,
(12:24):
California. Okay, that's some ofmy things, and we're gonna Valley.
I don't know why they do that. Probably because I went to high school
Gonna Valley. But oh they putthat on that that's program official, program
official. You only called Savanna, right, switch that up. I love
it though, I love it's alwaysright next to each other thing. I
love it. But yeah, Paris, California, Man, it ain't too
big. It ain't too small, but it's real. Yeah, I said
(12:46):
there, Yeah, all right, see what you got for me? But
you got any stories like Cam?I ain't got at stories like that.
But I played baseball when I wasyoung too though. Yeah, and so
if you, if you guys,if you guys are played for you play
basebay thing, I think I wouldhave been a pretty good baseball player.
I would probably play it. Ohno, I really I really want to
(13:07):
hoop. Oh no, why youwant to hoop? Orn like I want?
I want to hoop? Give mea trial. I'm you like that.
The Lakers need you want the Lakerseither? You can play for Lakers
right now? I could be lyingon the band up can Cam? You
can? You think you could scorefour points if you had two minutes an
(13:30):
NBA game? Every game? No, right now? One game, one
game, four points, four points, two minutes. Yeah for sure you're
in those Yeah, I hold upfive points, five points, Yeah,
a little three in the layout. You're gonna three. Yeah, you're gonna
three? Yeah, like soon,Like I don't know what you said other
day, Call me the black hole. Call me the black hole, because
(13:52):
you ain't never getting it back.Once you're fascinated to me, I'm shooting
like half course shots. I'm shootinglike every time about yeah time aboloic touching
my hands like it's going up walkingbucket. Yeah, it's a third splash.
Bro. I don't know about abucket, but it's go get put
up the show. The bank. The bank is open to bank. Speaking
(14:13):
of banks, before we continue, give a quick shot to our friends at
FFB Bank used to be known aspresident First Bank. They are now FB
Bank, the premier brank at thevalley. Uh, not just for your
business nens for your personal needs aswell. Bringing the juice has gone from
other banks to now FB Bank. We're putting our money where our mouth is
and our money with FB Bank.Have you guys seen their commercials commercial?
(14:35):
Yeah, we got a little somethingcoming out. I plug these books.
What some nil deals FV bank?We need to we hook that up and
talk to me right yeah? Yeah, what's what's what's the nil world for
the dbs? Right now? Youguys got anything cooking? Any companies that
you guys got a shout out?Shout out to collective shot. Yeah,
(14:58):
there you go. What's I know? Came in CJ. You guys both
went to a school out of highschool, you left that school, you
went to JC, and you bothended up at Presdent State. Yeah,
so what I went to JC straightout of high school and then you went
(15:18):
to Hawaii. Yeah, and thenyou went straight to Presdent State. Okay,
you guys both went JC and thenwe went that Duco world. My
point is the Juco world. Talkto me about that jucoke Ryan and how
the transport portal has affected both ofyou guys to end up at Present State.
Came start with you, man,mhm hmm. I was just talking
(15:43):
to you. But it's a grindshow man, just especially with this transfer
portal. Like at least like beforelike transfer portal happened, Like when I
was in Juko, it wasn't notransfer portal, so we wasn't getting like
that much competition right with those guys. But now I'm pretty sure, like
(16:10):
it's like do or die for realfor real when you at Juco. But
it's it's just a grind and youjust gotta embrace it. Like if you
see yourself doing this for a longtime, or at least doing this in
college, I mean, you haveto embrace it. So it's just all
about what you can take and whatyou can't. Yeah, your juco ain't
(16:33):
no joke. Man. I saluteall my juco players out there in the
country. Man, I salute youbecause it's real usually on your own.
Yeah, just getting how you getit. But yeah, I had to
tryan support it an effect with mea little bit. But I missed out
on a couple of things. ButI figured if I missed out on it,
it wasn't meant to be. Sosure, I'm blessed. I'm happy
(16:53):
where I'm at. I was rightschool and the end absolutely what made you
so so? Your pivot points? What? And then we could go around
the hornet? Why why did youchoose president state? CJ? What you
got man learns how to steal mything? Nah? I really though our
coaching staff man, and they're elite. We have an elite coaching staff.
(17:14):
We have a history of winning here. It came down to it to like
uh, some other Man West schoolstoo, But it just didn't have that
history of winning. It wasn't nofamily. Like when I came on my
little visit in my trip, Ireally felt it like the coaching staff got
along and you know, they pedigree, They they all got their own little
feel me background. They don't listedwhat they didn't done, but yeah,
(17:37):
that's what really got me here tocoaching staff. I know, it's a
great group of guards, a specialplace. Yeah yeah, hazy, what
you got? Why'd you choose presidentState? See? For me, it
was like COVID so I didn't reallyget a chance to do visits. But
Presideal State was a school that reallylike was talking to me a lot,
helping me. Like they helped meset up my classes for high school so
I was eligible for Like, wow, that's awesome. So it's like in
(18:02):
j D, great coach, shoutout j D coming up. Man,
it's cool to learn from a greatcoach like that. So yeah, that's
that was Like I get it,can't can you? You came from a
Mount West rival them there? Yeahthere, But I tell people are like
a lot of people don't know Iwent to really college so really like what
(18:26):
thirty minutes thirty forty minutes away growsshout out really but you know, just
just the atmosphere and stuff like thatat the valley, like these people really
love football and they they care forthe football players and the coaches as well.
(18:48):
They get along and they're gonna makesure like you're good after football at
least, as coach Teffer says,he wants us to be football players and
great men, great man. Yeahyeah, I really look into coaches at
really try to push me at tobe a better man too. That's what
(19:10):
I said. And I'll tell youthis, being out of the game for
a short period of time now, like having coached Teddy like new it matters
and these experiences for football. Ihope you guys all have fifteen year NFL
careers. I hope you do.I hope I get one of your league
jersey's on this wall some day.Seriously, get the plug. I'll send
(19:32):
you some hats. But Teddy coachTedford, he preaches, you know,
he wants to create yes, greatfootball players, but also develop you in
a good upstanding young men and nomatter who you are. Tom Brady retired
this last year. Football ends foreverybody someday, and it's tough. And
(19:55):
you know what, that's one ofthe reasons like I started bringing the juice
is because when you're done playing sports, where all you know is I'm gonna
wake up and grind to get better, and then all of a sudden one
day. It's just taken from you, like it's it's just it's just taken.
There is no like church league tacklefootball. There is no there is
there's none of that, right,So when it's over, it's over.
(20:17):
You could you could play flag footballor something. It's not the same.
You're never gonna get that. LikeI'm really strapping up that adrenaline rush that
it's that locker room feeling. Youguys had a mock game today. I
guarantee you that mock game today, just if you've done it before, gets
you fired up. I was tellingmy youngest brother Joe today, I was
like, Yo, it's a mockgame, like it s's a little different
(20:38):
than high school, you know, well different, like you're not used to
seeing a bitboard saying seven centers out, nine returners out like that is it's
down to it the second damn nearSo much energy goes into this. You
train three hundred and fifty days atleast a year for this thing, for
(21:00):
twelve games guaranteed, and you gotto capitalize on them somehow, some way,
Right, A lot of energy goesinto this. So when it's done,
you got this empty space in yourbody. Bro, And when I
finished my athletic crew. You hitthis point where you have pretty much two
options. Right, you could takethat empty feeling and just like be sad
(21:21):
about it, which I was.I wasn't like, you know, crazy
depressed or anything, but like youmiss it, bro, Like it's part
it was your it's your life. It's your life for a better for have
you finished playing when you're twenty oneyears old for a quarter of your life
being a high level football player, just playing five or six years at Presdent
State. That's a quarter of yourlife that you dedicate to that row.
(21:44):
So that's just take it from you. I gotta fill that void somehow.
So you try to figure out,how can I take that same energy,
that same attention to detail and gritand commitment to excellence that it took to
be the best version of myself?I could possibly be out of football field
two whatever the hell I'm going todo next? And that is so much
(22:04):
easier said than done, because youget done playing football. No one's telling
you what time you need to besomewhere. You hurt your ankle, all
right, bro, go get someice out of the get some peas out
of the fez, and put thatbecause there is no treatment and I'm getting
scrape. You're not. You don'thave you want to take an ice to
the three twenty pound bags Philip Oldschool style Philip Garbage can't sit in that
(22:29):
thing. It just changes. Andto be able to have the option,
even of the guidance of knowing,Like listen, if I walk in prepared
somewhere, I'm gonna have an opportunityto be successful. I've said this on
the show too. If you're aguy from Fresno, CJ. Let's say
you finished football tomorrow. Okay, you're not. Let's say you finished the
ball tomorrow and you need to geta job in Fresno. This is the
(22:52):
type of city the value is.This couldn't be more true. I think
you walk in. Let's say yougraduated Fresno State. You know you're feeling
good about life. You put youput a button down shirt on, you
put some sort of shirt on,you tuck your shirt in, You walk
in there, say how's it going, sir? My name c J.
I played football friends of State,I got my diploma here. I would
(23:14):
love an opportunity to help make yourteam better. Can you get me anything?
Nine out of ten times you're gettinga job and because of your approach,
if they know you're a student athlete, they know you know how to
get somewhere on time. Otherwise youget ticked off in the first what three
days. So people are out theretrying to hire student athletes, but to
have that transition, I'm like,Okay, I'm not just out here.
(23:37):
Shout out to my boy Josh Woodsfor the Arizona Cardinals. He came up
with this. I'm not just outhere checking boxes. I might really doing
it because I've caught myself and I'msure you guys have caught yourself in your
athletic career where you're used to yourroutine. Yeah, you're used to like,
yeah, you know, I'll getup early. I get there ten
minutes O there every day. That'sjust that's what I do. I'm a
(23:57):
vet. Yes, I get inthe cold to for eight minutes after practice.
Yes, I watched twenty minutes worthof film and do this that I
catch ten ten jugs on each sideeach day. Well, okay, are
you getting better every day? You'regetting better, You're getting worse. Shout
out George Helmith. You're either gettingor trees living or dying. You're not.
(24:18):
You never stay the same every singleday, and so you have all
these like call them what you want, like cliche, cheesy sayings, built
you know, locker room talk, things that are painted on the walls and
in the halls and whatnot. Likeit really does hit home though, and
when you have to become an adultand realize you're you're trying to be the
(24:41):
best version yourself as an adult andyour competition. It doesn't matter what their
forty is or how many touchdowns theyscored. At this point, it's it's
still who's gonna be the who's gonnawho's gonna be the outfit here, who's
gonna kick? And if you lookat guys who maybe they're business owners that
didn't go on and have crazy NFLcareers, but they have those same principles
(25:03):
that were installed with them from theirexperience of playing college football or some sport
college. Because they all you guysare in the training room, you gotta
respect like I respect them. Thefreaking women's lacrosse team, women's equestrian team,
soccer team. They go through thegrind just like we do now.
Football it is different. I've talkedto baseball dudes and tennis dudes. It
(25:26):
is different, but you can't.Doesn't mean that it's their fault that it's
not at the same pace. Necessarily, they're playing more games like there's a
grind and there's a mental barrier thatyou have to overcome in order to gain
that confidence. Like we were talkingearlier, you really become a VET when
you say it's fall camp. Hey, we're doing the conditioning test right before.
(25:48):
I know what my splits are.I'm gonna give good effort, make
sure I make my times, andI'm gonna pick up the young bucks who
come in say hey, come seeit next to me, Bro. I'm
not gonna make fun of them oror push them aside. A real season
vet doesn't say and says, hey, check me out if you If he's
too big time, no problem,Bro, no problem at all. But
(26:11):
those just becoming a well rounded humanbeing is something coach Tedford so good at
doing. And I'm just going offfull of tangent just saying like, yo,
this really does translate. And I'vehave dudes, I have best friends
who scored lots of touchdowns at PresidentState when instead of taking that mindset and
applying it to the next phase oftheir life. They're chilling on their girlfriend's
(26:33):
couch. Bro, And that's whatyou want to do. Choices, everyone's
got them. But at the endof the day, choices, you got
a decision to make. And rightnow you're playing football. I tell my
brothers, play football, have fun. It does not last forever. I
would have, dude, I wouldhave literally cut off a peaky to go
(26:55):
through an APAs practice this year, like you miss it because once it's done,
it's done. It's over with, like it is, and like you
got to move on. And Imean I'm exaggerating, but like it's it's
you wish you knew you were inthe good times when the good times are
happening. Man, truly is thatfact, bro? And and you and
and the stats are great, thewinds are fun, but it's good either.
(27:21):
Remember it's the locker room during takingnaps and tripping, talking about some
weirdos and and how the one wasafter because they didn't make their time,
you got to do another one.And like members, yeah, member,
coach Ward did this. You're like, damn, bro, it's a special
thing and you guys are in itand and you know, coach staffords the
(27:44):
right band for the job. Andlike of course it's it's tough talking about
j D. Though people don't knowthat much about j D. J D
is coming on the part. Giveme a preview of j D Williams.
What's it like getting coached by jD Williams Hazy Start with you, bro,
you're the young bucks. It's goodagain coached by him, Like you
know the game in and out.He sleeps in and out on the game.
So it's like all that knowledge isgetting from him, it's like just
(28:07):
making me a better player. Andlike personally he knows that it's not just
about football, it's about being abetter man too, so he he appreciates
us every day. So Jad's agood man. Yeah, great man.
Yeah what about j D Williams Man? Coach? J D Williams Man just
(28:30):
where just kny like explain wait whathe done? And still to me honestly
like being like him, just justhis aura and how you do things and
just it's quirkiness and just everything abottom is just like people gravitate to that.
(28:56):
So I just gravitated to it andjust you know, embraced him.
And you know he's the first rounddraft pick. So anything football. You
should listen. You have to listen. You have to listen. I mean

field, backpedal and trying to breaka certain way. He knows the ends
and outs of it. And he'slike he said, he's like seven on
(29:42):
one with this. When you comewith this football knowledge, he's up there
seven years in it, he's doneIt's been a player. He's reached the
highest level. Yeah, man, because j D is great going and off
the field. He's a mentor forreal, He's really he's the mentor.
He's not even a coach. I'llsay he's a mentor, believe it or
