Speaker 1 (00:00):
Short show pre Cu Buffs. Menton's basketball edition.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Five, six six nine zero is the text line, see you,
I believe taking on?
Speaker 3 (00:12):
Is it Providence tonight.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
The Friars, Friars, the two and one Friars. I think,
see you may be in trouble this evening. Take it
on the two and oh see you Buffs, you think
you might be in trouble.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
I think so.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
See you is only a one and a half point
favorite at home. I guess Providence, That's what I'm saying. Man,
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Providence of course lost to Va Tech by six. At
Va Tech, they beat Holy Cross by a bunch and
pen by a bunch.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Providence can shoot. They they score. I will say that
they scored.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
The bus have only played Montana State, which was a
close one, and then they uh they played Eastern Washington
all both those games at home and also also fairly close. Yeah,
fairly close game. The uh the Friars. Man, they just
put up shots. It's not like the most efficient team.
They just they play a high speed brand of basketball
and they they get some they get shots up.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
They that's a rebound fairly well, which is you know,
part of what they do in.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Terms of field goal percentage. Both teams right around fifty percent.
The Providence is just a little under fifty the Buffs
at fifty one point three. But Providence also gets to
the line that makes the free throws. They are an
eighty four percent free throw shooting team, where the CU
boss are a sixty nine percent free throw shooting team.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
That's the number you want to land on if you're
not going to be.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Good, if you're not gonna be good, there's a very one,
very specific number to land on.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
I will say this about CU.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
They got a freshman guard, Isaiah Johnson, that is going
to be a freaking stud.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Yeah, he's pretty good.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
He's averaging twenty and a half points a game so far,
and he's he looks like he's gonna be h.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
He's gonna be something.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
The interesting play for me is gonna be how Providence
is able to defend Bango Dak.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Yeah, he's a monster. He is a monster, seven foot
two or three. He didn't play like a seven footer,
you know he played. He plays like somebody who's six
foot six when you when you watch him, and so
that's it's gonna be interesting to see how they how
they defend him.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Providence has several players.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
I think that that are key for them in this one,
Edward's and Sellers being the main two, but vax Is
a is a pretty decent score as well, three average
and over fifteen fifteen games. They distribute the ball well,
nobody's the primary guy. They distribute the ball well. They're
a good passing team.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
They got a couple of good defenders and Meyler and Floyd,
and the main rebounders are afore mentioned Mela and then
Irwin Monks whose name I butcher every time he was
six ten, two thirty five, and probably the guy that
lines up with dak Is is really their their primary interior.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
As far as that kind of stuff goes so interesting,
we'll see, we'll see how that shakes out.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
Is Mark marko lecall? You know, he does a lot
of these early season games. He's on the TV broadcast,
so I'm not sure if it's him or Jerry Shimmel.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Okay, all right, always I wondered, you know, we'll.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Still go to break leading into it with Mark Johnson
like that. Dude should he should be the official voice
of Monster Truck rallies.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
Dude has a golden set of pipes and the most
aggressive way that that you could and it's great, Like,
you know, how often do you like listening to basketball
in the radio, But then you hear Mark Johnson, You're like,
oh my god, this is I could I can listen
to this, I know, man.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
And same the thing with the football games.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
You know a lot of times I'm not tuning in
to watch a CEU football game. I'll have another bigger
game on, but I'll have the CU radio broadcast on
in the background, and he gets so freaking amped up, like.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
It can't help you.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
You love a good Homer call, at least in my opinion,
and it was very It's always very fun to Mark Johnson.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
Whether it's basketball or football.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Yeah, And of course that's coming up here at bottom
the hour, right here on k Hey, I want to
get to our coach's Corner. Sean Payton breaking down a
play with Dave Logan.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
Every week.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
We love having this thing right here on on Koways
without further ado, this week's coaches Corner.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
Nicks drops back, throws the ball to the end zone to.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Pass is taught and that is a Denver touchdown.
Speaker 5 (04:24):
Probably Franklin with the catch at the gold line and
he had Eric Stokes on his back, So Sean, obviously
that was a big play. It puts you guys into
a position to tie the game up.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
Just talk to us a little bit about that call.
Speaker 6 (04:37):
Yeah, it's actually called fifty three upright rail double cross
and so you try to float his zone. Sutton's got
the big baseline upright, and you have a rail first
crosser and then it's the second crosser that you're trying
to get open the thing. That was impressive there, and
I really like how the quarterback climbed the pocket it
(05:00):
all right and made the throw because that's the where
that's where the pocket unfolded, and so it was it
was one of those moments where I'm like, man, there
it is. You know it's in the gun five climb
and then making that throw in a tight window to
Troy that that was an important play.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (05:22):
I mean ball placement too, because you mean hit him
where Troy could catch it and also kind of contain
the ball.
Speaker 6 (05:29):
That's right, that's right, and it's it would be you know,
there's certain I think I think people think you give
new play. That would be a play that's up every
week from an odd ball formation. And yet the reads
and the you know there's a progression, but upright, rail
double cross would be one of our staples. And uh
and and the timing of it and and and everything
(05:52):
worked out just how you wanted it to.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
Okay, good enough, all right?
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Ye stay logan with the heck Co Sean Payton always
breaking down a play every week.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
We'll run that again Sunday morning.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Myself, Zach Seegers eight am here for Broncos warmup before
we have the Bet three sixty five opening line and
the Fantasy Football Hour Sunday morning. So if you missed
any part of that, you get a chance to listen
to that. Then There's been a lot of a lot
of chatter this week, last weekend, this week. Ever since
the Thursday night football game, the narrative has changed surrounded
(06:25):
bow Knicks. The narrative has changed throunding the relationship with
Sean Payton and bow Knicks the quarterback. Yeah, there's Sean
referring to him as the quarterback instead of bow as
he normally does. You know, everybody, all the same people
that Sean Payton used to work with a Fox or
all of a sudden saying that the Broncos could be
looking at a.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
New quarterback this this you know, this fall.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
These are the same people who, by the way, we're
calling bo Nicks a potential MVP candidate at the end
of the Giants game. The exact same people. So you know,
take that for what you will. However, there has been
a noticeable chill in the air as that were between
that and now all of a sudden you're getting these
rumors out of there.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
You know, Ryan was talking about it earlier, I think,
and one of the Texters pointed out that another radio
station has has sort of run with that that we
would trade Sean Payton to the New York Giants uh
for uh for draft picks and move on. And I
I mean, look, I don't think that's likely. I will
(07:21):
say that for the people that were wondering about the
Bill Belichick think Belichick put a statement out just a
little bit ago, uh saying that he has no interest
in any NFO, would not be pursuing it, had no
interest in NFL coaching jobs.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yeah right, I think they weren't interested in him. But
you know, as a way to preheunce that, it also
keeps your name in the news.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Hey, I've been the band, don't fire me.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
In North Carolina, they've turned it around a little bit
down there finally.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
I mean it's you know, and I think everybody wanted
to get it their their shots in on Bill Belichick early,
and it was going to take some time to turn
that around. I think the people that I know were
more laughing at Michael Lobarti and the ridiculous proclamations he
makes and that the self importance that he walks around
with down there in North Carolina.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
But yeah, but I think think, you know, just like
Sean Payton, Bill Belichick as someone who can certainly rub
people the wrong way. And when you finally get some
failure from those people who have been uber successful most
of their professional career, that's when people are going to.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Take their shots. Yeah, and I get them.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
As far as the Sean Payton goes, I think it's unlikely.
In fact, I think that's the wrong coach.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
If you're looking for Broncos coaches possibly headed to the
New York Giants, I would suggest that to me, it
would be more likely that Vance Joseph would be the
one they were looking at. General manager Joe Shane worked
with fans Joseph when he was in Miami, Davis Webb
could come along as the OC Web, a former Giants quarterback,
played quarterback under Brian Dabels. Dabel of course just left,
so Web understands the terminology of the offense that just
(08:42):
left and would be able to craft an offense with
Jackson Dart and have continuity there in terms of in
terms of doing things that way. So you know, there's
there's a lot of like right off the bat, Hey,
these these things all make sense in terms of that
Vance is going to be one of the hotter head
coaching candidates.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
Cycle Uh, either lose him.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
It's either Jeremy Fowler or Dan Grasiato put out a
put out an article about that we're gonna lose Fancy.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
I'm gonna tell you now, he's not coming back, like
we're gonna Lea's done after this.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Yeah, he's done here, So we better win the damn
Super Bowl this year.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
Yeah, And Jim Leonard would be the Jim Leonard would
be the next guy. He's currently the assistant head coach
and DB's coach and you know, passing, defensive, passing, game court.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
I forget how many titles he has now.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
So it's like to like the Calisian Game of Thrones,
Breaker of Chains, Mother of Dragons. I don't know what
else Jim Jim Leonard has titles title wise on there.
But you know, it's one of those one of those
things that I do not expect him to be back
any which way you slice it. Maybe we trade Sean
Payton to the Giants, even though you don't think it's
(09:50):
gonna happen, get a first.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
Round pick and make Vance the head coach again. A
time I was gonna say, has that ever happened before?
Outside of like I think Joe Gibbs, Does that ever
happened to Washington? Yeah, Joe Gibs came back to Washington.
Has that ever happened besides that? I don't think. So
I'm trying to I'm trying to think.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
And Gibbs was a little bit different because Gibbs was
wildly successful, you know it at Washington, whereas Vance's first
go around as the head coach was not exactly the.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Most despite what Sergio dipp said, he was not. Does
this mean we get Sergio back? Did you find out
where he is? I did not. I did not. Yeah,
it's with Gibbs.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Did he retire the first time? I can't remember. I
don't remember exactly how that went down. I remember when
he came back. That was when the I think the
Sean Taylor stuff happened. So according to the AI overview,
(10:59):
so o, God, take it for what you will.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
No telling if this is true. Joe Gibbs first.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
Retired from the Washington Redskins in nineteen ninety two and
came back in two thousand and four after focusing on
his NASCAR team. Yeah, okay, so's they're tired for a
second time in two thousand and seven.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
Yeah, after Sean Taylor and all that stuff. Okay, so
he retired, he was not fired. So Vance could theoretically
be the first person fired by a team to come
back in that scenario and be the head coach.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
Is that what we want?
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Is Broncos Country open to a second round of it
where Advance actually gets to pick his own staff and
players this time actually have control over everything that's going on.
I mean, who knows, maybe he would be successful. I
but like you said, Seohn Payton's not going anywhere.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
I don't think you.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
I mean, maybe we'll see if you got there's a
scenario where both of them could be.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Gone, I guess.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
I mean, if there was some sort of epic collapse
this year and we somehow most place.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
What would it take? What would it take to have this?
Because we're eight and two right now, right, I think
if we fell out of the playoff.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Picture by the end of the season, maybe, but even then,
I still think they'd give him another year. I don't
think this ownership group is quick to make snap decisions.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
They're gonna let things play out. They fired Hackett after
one year. They got rid of Rush right away like that.
I mean, I don't know, hid the Walton petigrew pretty decisive?
Speaker 3 (12:18):
Yeah, I don't know. I mean they had a little
more money invested in Sean than Yeah, it wasn't Hackett
here before they officially about the team.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Yeah, yeah, so that wasn't their guy, right, So they
were gonna pull the plug on him in London if
they'd lost. But he ended up winning in London, and
so they got a little longer than you had the
fight on They're gonna let him coach it out, and
they had the fight on Christmas?
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Remember that?
Speaker 1 (12:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (12:40):
But was it Dalton Reisner going after Brett Ribbon? On
national television and you're like, oh my god, that's why
I try to tell you and all Broncos fans like, hey, guys,
let's not.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
Take for granted where we are right now. It could
always be worse.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
It has been worse, a lot worse, and not too
distant of a past. We'd like to forget about that.
I think. Yeah with Seun, I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
It's starting to leak out in certain podcasts about the
toxic work environment over there and all that kind of stuff.
It's starting to there's there's some cracks that are starting.
People are starting stuff I've been talking about for a
couple of years that everybody's.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
Like, oh, brust an idiot. It's showing. It's starting to
leak out a little bit.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
You're starting to see it, uh some places about you
know about how it is.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
But in the end, if you're winning, none of that matters.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
If you're winning that people will overlook it. That's what
I'm saying, Like, you could be you can be a jerk,
and and if you're winning, people overlook it.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
Yeah. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
At eight and two, I don't know what it would
take for Sean Payton not to be back. I mean,
you'd have to basically lose out, I think, which I
which seems unlikely. You gonna like, you'd have to go
eight and nine at that and even at eight and nine,
I don't, I don't.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Know if it's I mean, it would have to be
an epic collapse.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Yeah, I mean if you got blown out by the
Raiders and went eight and nine. Yeah, look, I mean
losing out, you would lose both to the Chiefs the Chargers.
I mean, you know, there's something to be said, you know,
I don't know. I I still believe that we have
the Well, I'm.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
Not gonna get into that because people say I hate.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
I'll just say this. It's it's it's tough for me
knowing what I know and having to deal with that
every day. But I shouldn't whine about it. At the
end of the day, we're winning. We're winning, and the
fan base has been suffered long enough. I think I agree,
you know, so I'll just I'll leave it that way,
and I think we're gonna beat the Thiefs this weekend.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
I went back and just tried to and I tried
to watch the worst of case like like that Buffalo
game versus you know, the best of the Broncos and
that Giants come back, you know that kind of stuff.
And I still I'm like, man, the only way the
way we win is if we get a turnover or
get up early.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
And that's just not what we do. We don't get turnovers,
we don't get up early. We're gonna lose the coin
toss and get the ball first and go down and
score a touchdown.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
Okay, and we're gonna win twenty four to twenty.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Well, I tell you what, Grant Smith, if that happens,
I'm gonna Chris Ben Franklin with your name on it. Okay, deal,
Does I have to play it out exactly like that? Yes,
first drive, touchdown, first drive, touchdown, twenty four, twenty twenty four,
twenty hundred bucks.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
You don't.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
You owe me nothing either way. So this is a
risk free wager for you. That's my favorite kind to
call me Ben three Ben three sixty five the sport books.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
Rights in the business.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
Yeah, I just look I and I'm you know, I'm
excited about the prospect of a second vance. Joseph head coaching,
you know thing, whether that s New york Er, you know, wherever, Cincinnati,
if they fired their head coach, wherever. There's even been
some talk down there in Miami, where of course he
was a DC for a year.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
Champ Kelly is the general manager. So there's there's Vance
will have suitors this year. I'm telling you now, he's
not gonna be here next year. So let's enjoy that
part while we can. The question is, and Jim Leonard
was a pretty good defensive coordinator, you know when you
look at the college ranks what he did. But I
you know, what is he as a pro And at
that point is the defense you know, carrying the water
(15:58):
the way that they have been right this year, the
offense would need to take a significant step forward at
that point because the defense has been carrying him. And
like you and Nick were talking about earlier this week,
like Vance's eye for talent, and I think that's something
that's very underrated. That's a hidden that's a hidden component
of what he brings to the table. It's like having
an extra scout just because he's that dude. He just
(16:19):
you know, he just has that, he has that ability.
Speaker 5 (16:22):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
And so that's that's one of those things that that
I think you should I think you should keep your on.
There's there's a great article out on Vans speaking of
which Jason Reid uh Ja Reid ESPN put out. I
quote some of it earlier.
Speaker 2 (16:37):
I'll read it quote real quick, where we gotta gotta
get out of here Advance Joseph, and it talks about
him and talks about what he runs all this kind
of stuff.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
Advance says, quote, I don't call a lot of man.
What we do mostly is pressure up front with matchup principles.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
On the back end.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
It's like playing a box and one defense in basketball.
It's zoned inside and match outside.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
These days, the beauty of playing great defense in this
league is the ability to have different structures. If you
can get DB's close to wide receivers without giving him
the man tag, that's the expertise.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
This is a fascinating article. You guys should read it.
It gets into the him philosophically, what he likes to
do on defense. See your boffs. Providence Friars coming out
next tier on KOA.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
But from now, in like the next couple of days,
it's gonna be a lot of for Peter probably eyes
