(00:00):
M ANDT Bank Prisons CEOs you shouldknow powered by Iheartadiot. Let's meet Steve
Beck here is the CEO and executivedirector for the Military Bull Foundation, which
also includes partnerships with the DC TouchdownClub and Patriot Point. Before we talk
more about the Bowl game and muchmore, I first asked you to talk
a little bit about himself, wherehe's from and his origin story. He
(00:23):
grew up right here in Rockville,Maryland, went to college Saint Francis,
Pennsylvania, played a little football upthere, and working in a sporting event
business for many years, working McDonald'sAll American Game, Capitol Classic, Quarterback
Clubs, Washington, Baltimore. Wedid Rivals dot Com for a while,
five Star Basketball. So I've beeninvolved with sports for pretty much all of
(00:46):
my forty some year career. Well, that means you and I have a
lot in common because I've been doingsports with TV, radio and anything I
can get my hands on the lasttwenty five thirty years. So we've got
a lot to talk about when itcomes to the Military Bull Foundation that I'm
excited about, and I've watched thisabout every year out of Annapolis, and
we also want to talk about theDC Touchdown Club and the Patriot Point because
they're all connected, and I thinkthat's really important to educate our listeners when
(01:10):
it comes to that. But whydo we do this? It was fifteen
years ago and the Military Bowl wasunderway in Annapolis and you got a phone
call and I heard through a littlebird told me that was one of your
only job interviews in your life.So tell me about how you got actually
introduced to the Military Bowl Foundation. They become the CEO and executive directory.
(01:30):
So back at that time, Ihad an event management company even did a
lot of different events in the area, and a bank with Eagle Banks.
So the president of the bank calland said, hey, Steve, did
you see we got our own Bowlgame and had come out in the Washington
Posts the day before. I said, yeah, congratulations. He said,
well, any interest in being involved? I said, sure, possibly when
you want to get together. Hegoes, how about right now? So
(01:53):
go down to my golf shorts andmy golf shirts to see a friend of
mine who's the president of the bank. And yeah, it was my first
and only job interview with life.Fourteen people around a boardroom, chairman and
vice chair of the bank, andthe President and representatives from DC government,
and they formed a partnership and itstarted as the Eagle Bank Bowl. So
that was played at RFK for fiveyears, and then we changed it to
(02:16):
the Military Bowl and then a coupleof years later removed it to Navy Marine
Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, whichis just a spectacular venue, a great
spot for our game obviously, andyou got the small town Annapolis right there.
People can go watch the game,go have dinner, go to bars,
and there's art shops and all sortsof stuff to do in Annapolis.
(02:38):
So it's really been great for us. Steve, I know you've had a
major title sponsor change over the lastfifteen years, and of course am RFK
over to Annapolis, But how elseis the game and the venue, your
sponsors and just in general a CEO, how is it evolved over the last
fifteen years. Well, if youwould have said that we would be here,
(02:59):
if you could have told me thatfifteen years ago, I would say
no way. But it really hasbecome, you know, one of the
premier events in this area. It'snationally televised an ESPN. We get two
to three million viewers every year.We did have Northrop Gramma was our title
sponsor for ten years, which isa great run. So we're looking actually
(03:20):
for a new title sponsor right now. But the secondary sponsors we've been great.
I mean, we've had so manythat have been very, very supportive,
and the State of Maryland has beenvery supportive. They know that it
has a huge economic development for theregion during that time between Christmas and New
Year's which is generally a dead time. I mean, we book out all
the hotels in Annapolis. People arewalking the streets wearing their school colors and
(03:44):
going out to restaurants and spending alot of money when they come up here.
By the way, if our listenershaven't seen a Military Bowl in television
or have been to the Navy MarineCorps Stadium, it's a gorgeous venue.
It's really quite pretty there and it'sa great place to see a football game.
And last year was Duke in UCF, which was a great matchup.
And that's one of the things I'vetalked to Bold people all the time,
(04:04):
and you've got to have a greatplace. And you know, Steve,
you mentioned in restaurants and bars andhotels are a real big thing when it
comes to people traveling from whatever regionthey're coming to to watch their favorite team
or if they're an alumni. Butalso you after that great matchup last year
was a great matchup, So Iimagine that's really important to you. Now,
how does it work the whole processabout getting the teams secured when you
(04:27):
do a bowl game like this.Yeah, so our conference partners or the
ACC and the American Conference. Sowe're the number seven or eight depending on
the college Football playoffs, how manyteams go up in the ACC and then
we have either the first or secondpick out of the American Conference with a
geographic twist to it. So it'sobviously better for bowls when you have a
(04:48):
local team. As an example,East Carolina those canceled in twenty twenty one,
who's going to play Boston College?East Carolina create traveling school. They
bring thousands and thousands of people.Boston College, you know, had a
great year, not that great ofa traveling school. So you want to
have one at least one good sideto travel you know. Obviously when we
(05:12):
have Navy in the game, it'sa home run. We've had Virginia and
Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh all who's inNorth Carolina wait for us. All those
schools travel pretty well also, allright, And I think we should also
educate our listeners too that this isa year round prospect. Steve and his
team, we're working basically a yearround to secure teams and make sure because
there's so much that goes into abull game with the organization of it.
(05:34):
So maybe Steve, if you couldjust give us a thirty thousand foot view,
what's it like from month to monthwhen you're running the Military Bull Foundation,
And so if we started the calendaryear. Our first event is in
April every year and we hold theDC Touchdown Club Annual Awards dinner. We
hold that in Bethesda, Maryland. We saw that this is our tenth year.
(05:55):
We sold out every year and expectyou again this year. We have
a fantastic line up. Steve Spurryor Scott van Pell, Dextra Manly,
Terry McLaurin. Danny Meyer is goingto go into our circle of legends.
Who is a famous coach from NorthernVirginia High school coach. We have the
Maryland DC and Virginia Player of theYear and the Coach of the Year,
Pat Board from Saint John's in DC, So you know, we wrap all
(06:19):
that into a great night just hangingout at this venue and it's really really
a lot of fun. Then wego on to a golf tournament in June,
and then we have another event calledHome of the Free because of the
Brave, and that's held in Tyson'sCorner of Pogoda. One of our board
members, Paul Norman with the ChushianWakefield, supports that and we basically bring
(06:41):
fifty to seventy recovering service member outof the hospital. It's came a great
night out on opening night of proseason. And then it's really sponsored by
the development community, so we'll haveabout two hundred and fifty people in attendants
there, shut down the restaurant andjust another great night And those three events
raise money for patre at Point. And so Patriot Point is a two four
(07:02):
acre retreat center for Our Nations recoveringservice members, their families and caregiverse and
it's located outside of Cambridge, Maryland, on the eastern shore with two point
three miles of waterfront. We haveboats, kayaks, you know, gymnasium.
We do all sorts of activities withthe people that come down here.
(07:25):
We basically use nonprofits and they comedown and run their programs at our facility
and we're the fun guys. Youknow, we have a golf and hunting
simulator. We take them fishing andcrabbing and hunting, and it really just
did as a special place. Butthat whole time they're dealing with their nonprofits
to help them in some areas wherethey may need help, whether it's PTS
(07:47):
or TBI or you know, allthe different problems that are associated with,
you know, returning from being inthe service. So as everybody can hear,
it's kind of a three prong kindof nonprofit that Steve and his team
have when it comes to the MilitaryBull Foundation, the DC Touchdown Club,
and then Patriot Point. And I'dlike to ask you a little bit more
(08:09):
about Patriot Point because it sounds miraculous. It's a great idea, it's fantastic.
What's the criteria from veterans or anybodythat would like to be part of
this? How can they be apart of it? Yeah, we don't
vet soldiers, just tell you upfront. We rely on veteran and military charities
(08:31):
to do that. Do it througha number of organizations, you know,
the USO Hope for the Warriors,Military Warrior Support Foundation, Warrior Reunion Foundation,
gold Star Team Adventures. And there'sso many different about twenty or so
different nonprofits that we use and theywill Some of them have their own programs
(08:52):
and are pretty strict. Red WingFoundation is a new one which has partnered
up with and Human Middleton and asa Lieutenant commander retired Navy seal who him
and his wife they run the placefor us, and he was one hundred
percent disabled himself and he just wentthrough this one program with the Red Wing
Foundation and he said it was aspectaconor. So we're really looking forward to
(09:16):
grow that. We have other groups. We have a service dog group that
comes down. They'll come down forten days and they'll actually train the dogs
there with the people from around thecountry that are going to get their dogs.
So they bring him to Walmart, they bring him to downtown, they
walk around, teach them how tobe around other people, and then we
have a graduation ceremony for them atthe end. So it's really touching and
(09:37):
a great way to use the facility. Well, it sounds wonderful and I've
talked to people that have similar placeslike you do. I imagine that the
feedback is extraordinary, because I'm sureyou and I are in the same page
along with our listeners, that wecan't do enough and we can do more
for a military. The feedback andmouths be extraordinary that they can get a
chance just to forget about daily lifeand go out and have some fun.
(09:58):
I imagine the feedback is wonderful.Yeah, that's so sort of our line.
It says that the healing starts atour front gate. So when you
enter into Patriot Point, we havethis beautiful stone gate with iron clad gate
on there and it opens up andyou come down this lane and it's just
really breathtaking and it gives you afeeling of serenity just coming there. And
(10:22):
then you've got the wall. Ofcourse, we're right on the water,
and several several buildings on the property. They've all been redone. You know,
through the help of so many donorsand so many different events that we've
run, we've really made this oneof a kind place. Well, it's
really it sounds wonderful. I wantto get back to the Military Bowl Foundation,
and you were kind of talking aboutall the year round events and things
(10:45):
that you do to gather sponsors andsponsorships and also just kind of get ready
for the actual bowl game. Whendo things start really gearing up, When
you start talking to the conferences andsaying it looks like it's going to be
these teams and these are things weregoing to have to do and kind of
plan accordingly. When does it startreally gearing up for you and your team.
(11:05):
We really gears up with the startof football season. But you know
there's meetings and events that go onstarting next month. There's a meeting out
in Amelia Highland in Florida with thea SEC, and then the American Conferences
having one in Vale, Colorado, and then there's another one the media Days
for the a secs in July andmedia Days for the American Conferences in August.
(11:28):
So you put all those things togetherand it's just really about meeting the
people at the different institutions, becomingfamiliar with the athletic directors and their football
operations staff and the coaches. Soit gives us a good chance to do
that over these months, because ofcourse, when when the season's end,
you know, they got their gameface on and they're running one hundred miles
an hour, but we do.We have representatives that go to each game.
(11:50):
You know, they're where they're MilitaryBowl garb or board members and you
know, just it's important to havea presence around the different universities. Steve,
before we give the website to everybodyabout either donations sponsorship, just wanting
to find out more about the MilitaryBull Foundation, the DC Touchdown Club and
Patriot Point. I just wanted tomake sure because I know you were talking
(12:11):
about sponsors and you're looking for atitle sponsor right now, and I know
that is a really large conversation, but if somebody, well want to be
a part of that, well,Terry are you looking for when it comes
to secondary sponsors or people that wantto be a part of the Military Bull
Foundation and the actual game really peoplethat are just into the same passion and
(12:33):
you know, integrity and ethics. You know that we try and bring forth
at the Military Boal Foundation, andyou know, all these endeavors if you
listen to what we talk about, all these endeavors can be rolled into one.
You know, we're celebrating the gamefootball in the Washington area. It's
a fuel our mission of honoring andsupporting the nation's service members. DC Touchdown
(12:54):
Club benefits Patriot Point, which isone of the most amazing things that I
know about there. And you know, you look at how many asthetic teams
and events celebrate military appreciation, nicethe NFL Salute to Heroes. But I
don't know if any other entity thatactually has a piece of real estate that
gives back in the way that we'reable to. And we're so proud of
(13:15):
that, and you know, toget it to this point where we've done
a total makeover of the property indealing with these twenty or so different nonprofits
or reaches really throughout the country. And like I said, it's not just
for wounded, ill and injured,it's their families and caregivers that's so important
as well. Do we have adate, say yet for the next upcoming
game. No, not yet.We don't get that until the NFL schedule
(13:39):
comes out. Okay, so thatmakes a lot of we actiously await that
though. Well good, well,I've watched several on there, and I've
actually been at the stadium too,at Navy Marine Corps Stadium, and it's
gorgeous in Annapolis. I hope ourlisteners get a chance to not only watch
it on television, but maybe evenattend because it really is a beautiful venue.
It's usually pretty entertaining game when youget those two conferences, there's a
(14:01):
lot of touchdown passes and a lotof offense going on, just like there
was last year with Duke and UCF. So that was very exciting. Well,
Steve, we talked about the website. If somebody wants to be a
sponsor, if they want to geteducated, maybe even reach out to you
to talk a little bit more aboutthe Military Bowl Foundation, the DC Touchdown
Club and Patriot Point, which Ithink is really really important. I'm glad
(14:22):
we had a chance to chat aboutthat. What's the website address? So
we have Military Bowl dot org organd then Patriot Point dot org org and
then a touchdown club is DC TouchdownClub dot com. So all three of
that, those those are basically ourmissions and they pretty much describe what we
do. And if anybody as anyquestions or interesting being involved, they can
(14:45):
reach out to me directly my emailsspec at Military Bowl dot org. Out
