Speaker 1 (00:00):
Next up this Saturday Morning, Knowledge is Power, hosted by
Rob Kane of Citi's Insurance Group. If you have a
question for Rob and would like it answered on an
upcoming show, email him at r Kane at citiesig dot
com and now.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Rob kan Hi, everyone, and welcome to Living in Leclair.
This is a periodic segment of Knowledge's Power made possible
through the generosity of Rob Kine and City's Insurance Group.
I'm Wayne Wally. I'm the current president of the Leclair
Tourism Board and your host of Living in Leclair, where
we like to talk about things going on when you
(00:36):
live in Leclair. The first thing I want to do
with this episode is to say thank you to everyone
for the great turnout, the volunteers, the sponsors, everything we
had for the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show presented by
the Buffalo Bill Museum at Cody Elementary School on Saturday,
June twenty ninth and Sunday, June thirtieth. In addition, on Saturday,
(00:57):
June twenty ninth, we had a one hundred night indieth
Birthday party for Leclair with free ice cream provided by
Happy Joe's. We had fireworks, we had face painting, We
had a petting zoo, We had a balloon artist, a madician,
we had some musical acts. It was a great time
down on the levee on the South End. Thankfully, the
Mississippi River did not flood the South End until after
(01:19):
we got our event over, so it was a really
good time. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many
people came down for this family friendly event. I think
we gave out more than six hundred cups of ice
cream free ice cream. Again thanks to rich Henning and
Happy Joe's for providing that the balloon artist and the
face painter had lines that were ten or twelve deep.
(01:41):
The whole time learning experience for putting on an event.
If you're going to do face painting, have more than one.
Kids really enjoy this sort of stuff and the nutting
Fancy Farms petting zoo was also a big hit. There
was a baby mini horse, a couple of baby sheep,
there were roosters and a few other types of animals.
It was really kind of cool. Thanks again to Jordan
(02:04):
Moore and up and coming country music artists for performing
down on the levee. I was a great backdrop on
top of a flatbag truck with the Mississippi in the background.
And then also to Jublow for giving us their great
Old West bluegrass type style music. And then of course
Uncle Norms Fireworks put on an absolutely unbelievable display. I
(02:27):
was able to watch it from the Celebration Center at
the distillery where Ryan Burschett and his man the Moonshiners
were playing that evening. But when the fireworks happened around
nine point fifteen, it was a great show. They were
shooting the fireworks off on the north end and it
was like they were coming right at you at the
Celebration Center. And again thanks to Uncle Norm's Fireworks and
(02:48):
to Kyle for the great show that they put on.
It was an unbelievable fireworks display. Now I also want
to make sure that I thank all our sponsors and
encourage you to also thank these people and to know
participate or you know, at least go into their businesses
say thank you, or you know, shop there, eat there, whatever.
But we had the Riverboat Twilight do the sponsorship that
(03:12):
help us have buses running from the levee to the
fire station and out to Cody Elementary for the Buffalo
Bill Wild West show that was a very generous donation
by Kerrie Steyer and the Riverboat Twilight. It really helped
a lot of people get out to that event and
have a good time out of Cody Elementary. I also
want to thank kV doll and doll Ford for their
(03:33):
sponsorship and Hattie's Fanciful Imporium that's owned by my wife Donna,
and we put in whatever else needed to be done
to make sure this event happened. And then Happy Joe's
Pizza and ice Cream for donating the ice cream and
all the other material we needed for scooping and everything. Again,
I want to thank all those volunteers that one they
helped ride the buses. You know, Rob Kine was in there,
(03:56):
as was Holly Cootko. I'm trying to remember who else.
Cindy Brune is well and Rick Read Again, appreciate your
help with that. All the people that scooped ice cream.
I don't remember all the names on the top of
my head, but there were plenty of you that were
in there making sure people got their vanilla chocolate and
strawberry ice cream. And thank you so much for your
time and help. On Saturday, June twenty ninth, I also
(04:18):
want to thank antiqu Archaeology for their sponsorship as well
as Emily found It. Emily Gwynn made a nice logo
for the one hundred and ninetieth birthday that we put
on T shirts. Some of those t shirts are still
available for sale. We have a few left, limited edition.
They're at had Hatties and they're only fifteen dollars each,
so stop in and get yours if you can. Also,
(04:39):
Fairway Meat and Grocery they allowed us to have one
of their Fairway cookouts on Saturday from like eleven to one.
And what you do is you get your volunteers together
and you serve, serve up the food and Fairway donates
all the food. They have their gentlemen out grilling. I
believe that's just. And then Jeremy, the manager of Fairway,
(05:03):
helped set everything up and all the proceeds, whatever beyond
what the costs were for Fairway, all went to us.
We were able to raise over five hundred dollars with this.
The Fire Department has done it now, Tugfest has done it,
The Civic Club is doing it. Today's Saturday, July twentieth.
Be sure and check this out. It's a great deal.
(05:23):
I mean you can get hamburgers for four dollars, brought
patties for four dollars, a pork sandwich for four dollars.
Hot dogs are two dollars chips or a dollar. It's
really a great, great deal. It runs from eleven to one,
so be sure and check that out. I also want
to thank the Leclaire Chamber of Commerce for their donation,
Blackhawk Bank and Trust Dwellings, K and K Hardware, the
(05:45):
Mississippi River Distilling Company of Heaven and Earth, First Central Bank,
Cody Rose Flowercoat, the Potter's House Crane and Pelican Cafe.
The cooperation and help of the Buffalo Bill Museum and
its executive director, Rita Farroh. You have Keith and Company
who printed up the T shirts at a discount for us.
The Leclaire Civic Club who also had bingo on the
(06:07):
levee at the pavilion. People had a good time with
that as well. And to the River Valley Optimist Club
who volunteered to come down and sell soda and water
as it is pretty warm down there on the levee
during the event, so I appreciated that they were there
and able to come down. We also had the hot
dog guy who sold out, and we also had Riverbend
(06:27):
sin Works, who again also gave us a discount. They
printed the banners that we used on the buses and
also the banners that you saw on Great River Road
and at the events. Again, I can't thank enough all
the people that supported this event and made it happen.
And I also have to say congratulations to Rita Feroh,
(06:48):
the executive director, and to the Buffalo Bill Museum for
putting on a spectacular event at Cody Elementary School. When
all is said and done, they had nearly two thousand
people attend the event across the two days. The weather
was warm, but wonderful, nice sunny days after a lot
of rain on Friday. They had to do a lot
(07:09):
of work on the Saturday morning to get the grounds
prepared and ready to go. But it was a great setup.
If you didn't go, they are going to do it
next year, so be prepared for the Buffalo Bill Wild
West Show in twenty twenty five. It's a great time
because you can go out, you can walk through the encampment.
They have games, they have other things for sale, and
(07:29):
people are camping out there. The reenactors come with their horses,
they have them set up, they set up tents, they
set up tps, and they're out there and they will
explain and talk about the wild West and how things
were back then and everything along those lines. Then they
do their show at about twelve thirty in the afternoon.
It lasts for more than an hour with precision and
(07:51):
trick riding, trick shooting. It's a very very very fun show,
very great family event. So again I don't have the
specific eight yet, but mark your calendars and be ready
to go to the Buffalo Bill wild West Show presented
by the Buffalo Bill Museum next year twenty twenty five.
Now I'm going to take a short break and when
I come back, we're going to be talking about all
(08:12):
the next upcoming events in Leclair that you're not going
to want to miss.
Speaker 3 (08:16):

Speaker 2 (08:56):
Hi, everyone in welcome back to you living in Leclair. Wally,
I'm your host and I'm also currently the president of
Leclair Tourism Board. Today I don't have a guest to
talk about these things, but it's time to talk about
all the great events that are coming up in Leclair
in August, so be prepared marker calendars. Lots of fun
stuff going on. Let's start with what's happening on August third.
(09:19):
That's going to be Saturday from nine am to four
pm down on the Leclair Levee. It's the Heartland British Autofest.
Now they've been bringing their show to Leclair for several
years because the levee is such a great place to
show off your automobiles, and so this is an all
British Car Show set along the Mississippi River. If you
have a British car I want to entry, it's just
(09:40):
fifteen dollars. You can get pre registered. There is info
at QCBAC dot com and the Leclair Levey, as they
like to tell everybody, is just one block east of
Highway sixty seven and to enter the autofest to turn
east on Dodge Street and follow the signs. Again, it's
a fun event to wander around the levee and check
out all these great different British cars. And again it
(10:04):
goes on from nine am to four pm. And that's
on Saturday, August third, coming up pretty quick, just in
a couple of weeks. Then it's time to get ready
for you guessed it, Tugfest. Now, this is a great, unusual,
different event where traffic actually gets stopped on the Mississippi River.
(10:25):
So this big giant rope is stretched across the river
between Leclair and Port Byron, and you have eleven different
teams that are competing to pull the most rope to
their side. You have judges on both sides. They're measuring
the rope and they're figuring out who wins each tug.
And you end up with the first side to get
six wins is going to win the Alabaster Eagle trophy
(10:48):
that signifies the winner of Tugfest. So for twenty twenty four,
lots of events going on on the Leclaire side and
it all starts on Thursday August eighth. Now Thursday August
is Family Night. There's free admission and it's wristband Night
where you can get unlimited rides when you buy a
thirty dollars wristband, so thirty bucks you get unlimited rides
(11:10):
at the carnival. The carnival vendors and beverage tent opens
at five thirty pm on that Thursday. There's also bingo
on the south end from five thirty to ten. You
also have a bags tournament that's going to be going
on this year from six thirty pm and that's at
the north end of the levee. And then live music
goes on from seven to eleven. And that's it for
(11:32):
the Thursday, but thence comes Friday, August ninth. Admission is
eight dollars. Under twelve gets in free. There will be
a parade that is on fifteenth Street and comes all
the way down Wisconsin. Boy, you know there's lots of
candy being distributed, so make sure if you're interested in
getting some candy, that you get a good spot. I
suggest getting further up fifteenth away from Cody Road, because man,
(11:56):
there's so many people and so much candy that sometimes
they those in the parade will run out of candy
before they finally get to Cody Road. But I think
everybody will be prepared to have plenty of candy this year.
There's also this year going to be a community tailgate
party at the Leclair Baptist Church parking lot, so be
sure and check that out too. The Grand Parade starts
(12:17):
at six pm. The theme this year is Stars and Stripes,
a salute to America. The carnival is also open on
Friday from six to ten, as well as the beverage tent.
Bingo's going on again on the Friday from six to
ten pm. There's also a VIP sponsor party on the
North End live music starting at eight thirty and then
(12:37):
at nine thirty are the fireworks. Now, Tugfest has some
of the most spectacular fireworks displays that you will ever see.
With these fireworks being shot off over the Mississippi River,
you get the great reflection off the water. It's just
a fantastic fireworks show. It seems to sometimes go on forever,
(13:00):
probably about thirty minutes and maybe more, maybe a little less,
but be sure and come in. I know people often
come to Leclair you can't find a parking space because
people are lined up all up and down the streets
getting ready for this fireworks show because it is such
a fantastic fun event. Now, if you're coming out for
fireworks and you know, you find your parking space or whatever,
(13:21):
don't forget to wander around a little bit. Some of
the shops will stay open late. You do still have
the Wide River Winery. You have the Green Tree Brewery,
you have One twenty nine, you have the Mississippi River
Distilling Company. All these places are open. You know, come
on out, have some fun. On Friday. That's be Friday.
Let's see. I just need to check Friday August ninth,
(13:43):
so again that's Tugfest on Friday. Now, Saturday, August tenth,
that's when Tugfest actually happens. It's the tug Leclair versus
Port Myron. The Levy will open at ten am, but
there's also a community Techfest breakfast at the Civic Club
that starts at seven am. Check this out. It's a
great fundraiser for the Civic Club. They also serve a
(14:04):
great breakfast spread. It's something you need to check out. Now,
come on down this time, check out this breakfast at
the Leclair Civic Club and consider joining. The membership fees
are not very much. It is a club that has
been around for more than seventy five years. It has
done a lot of community service. It has had projects.
(14:26):
It is responsible for having built the pavilion down on
the Levee. They've done so many things for the city
and it is time to get another generation joining the
Leclair Civic Club. So please come on down to the
Civic Center on Saturday, starting at seven am for the
community Tugfest breakfast. Talk to some of the Civic Club
members about joining and let's get this club built up again,
(14:49):
back to where it is a power in Leclaire. Now, tuggers,
you know, if you're listening, your registration you already know,
is at eight am at the Masonic Club. There's also
a kids tug sign up begins at nine thirty am
and that's at the north end of the Levee at eleven,
all the beverage and the vendors and beverage tent will open.
Bingo's going to go on from noon again till ten
(15:11):
thirty pm, so a full day at Bingo. Have fun
with that. The actual tug begins at noon and goes
to three pm. And that's Leclair versus Port Byron. Now again,
if you're listening and you live in Leclair and you've
been to Techfest, you know how all this works. If
you've never been to one of these, the way it
goes is you have your first team set up, the
(15:33):
tug starts, they pull the rope, they try to pull
as much to their side. Then they have to hold
it for three minutes. This is both a strength and
endurance test and it really is something to watch. I
know that there are bleachers out there, there's plenty of
room to come out. Let's cheer on the Leclair teams
this year. Let's help them go and see what they
(15:55):
can do against Port Byron. You know last year when
there was an excavator in the middle of the Mississippi
River holding the rope out of the water. Leclaire actually
won four out of the eleven, which is the best
Laclaire's done in several years. But if there's a big
crowd out there cheering the tuggers on, that's what we need.
So come on out and help cheer on the Leclair
(16:17):
Tuggers and see what they can do this year. Now
at six pm, there's more live music. Live music keeps
going all the way through midnight, and that's going to
take care of Tugfest twenty twenty four again. It starts
on Thursday, August the eighth with the carnival and wristband night.
Friday we'll be a parade and fireworks. Saturday is the
(16:40):
actual tug Come and support your town, Come and enjoy
all the festivities. Remember, all your businesses downtown are open
and ready for business, so come in and check them
out as well. It's a great time again to come
out and enjoy what's going on in Leclair. And now
we're going to take a short break and we'll be
back shortly. Hi, this is Rob Kane, and I just
(17:03):
want to remind you it's all there in Leclair.
Speaker 4 (17:07):
We get it. You're a steadfast supporter of that special drink.
Get your go to your partner in crime. The root
of several unforgettable moments. Yes, you can be adventurous at times,
but that drink always has your back. A connoisseur of
craft beer, lover of fine wines, and expert to a
variety of spirits all share one thing, a keen understanding
(17:28):
of how to enjoy life. With a brewery, distillery, and
winery all in a two block radius, there's no reason
to settle with just one spot for the evening. Consider
yourself lucky in Leclair with a trip down Libation's Lane.
Check out these local hotspots to start planning your visit
to Libation's Lane, including Green Tree Brewery, Mississippi River Distilling Company,
(17:49):
and Wide River Winery.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
That's right, it's all there in Leclair. We can't wait
to see you. Hey everyone, and welcome back to this
episode of Living in Leclair, where we're talking about things
that are going on to LaClair here in this summer,
particularly in the month of August, because we have so much.
We've already discussed what's going on with the Heartland British
Car Show on August third, then you have the great
(18:12):
weekend with Tugfest, then you get a little bit of
a break, but then we finish off the month on
August twenty fourth with Vets on the River and this
is Vets Corvettes supporting vets. This is an event that
has been coming to LaClair for several years. There are
several Midwest Corvette clubs and they come to Leclair to
(18:32):
show off their cars and also again to support veterans.
It's a pretty amazing show. I know that probably at
its peak one year, there were more than five hundred,
maybe as many as six hundred corvettes that were in
Leclair on this day. I remember that the levee had
to be closed and the city set up Wisconsin Street
(18:54):
going up from the levee Upcody Road on up to
Second Street for more cars to be parked where people
can wander around and see all these amazing cars that
people own and love to show off. And I don't
blame them. And again with people getting together that are
part of these Midwest Corvette clubs and other different clubs
that all come to this, they drive out, they bring
(19:16):
their cars, there's lots of different merchandise, there are prizes
that they can win, their entry fees, all this sort
of stuff, and the whole event earns money that is
then put together and donated to local veterans groups. So
it is a very worthwhile event to come and check
out or to participate in. Got a corvette Check this
(19:39):
out Now. It happens again on August twenty fourth. It's
down on the levee. There's gonna be lots of different
potential add ons after you register. There's gonna be t shirts,
polo shirts, tumblers, hats. There's also different raffles, auctions, all
sorts of other things to raise money. Also, if you're
(19:59):
a business in town and if you'd like to sponsor,
there is additional support you can do. There is a
sponsorship letter that you can find online. You can go
to Vetsondriver dot com and there is a link to
the sponsorship letter. Now, also it turns out that on
this Saturday, the Riverboat Twilight's going to be doing their
(20:20):
sightseeing cruises. Now, the Riverboat Twilight has been doing these
sightseeing cruises for a couple of years now on Saturdays,
and they're an hour and a half they I remember
the departure times correctly. You know, one is at eleven am,
another's at one thirty, and another's at four A lasts
about an hour and a half it's very worthwhile and
it's very great. Again, the Riverboat Twilight is a great
(20:42):
attraction in leclair and Carrie Steyer and her family they
support so many different things in Leclaire with different donations
and all that sort of thing, so let's support them.
They were not able to do some of their cruises
this year because of the flooding that was on the
Mississippi River and there was no way to get to
the Twilight as the south end of the levee was
pretty much underwater for a week or two. So let's
(21:06):
get out and support the Riverboat Twilight. Let's fill up
all these sight seeing cruises. You can buy some tickets
in advance for that as well. You can go to
Riverboat Twilight dot com slash Sightseeing hyphen Cruise and check
it out and again August twenty six going eleven am,
one thirty pm and four pm. But also every Saturday
(21:27):
in August there should be sightseeing cruises as well. I'm
not sure it happens during Tugfest, but on the other
Saturdays there should be sightseeing cruises happen. So again, go
to the website check it out. Even if you live
in the player, this is a wonderful one and a
half hour cruise and a chance to go out on
the Mississippi River and see it from a different perspective
(21:49):
than just driving by and looking out on the water.
So there we go. You've got vets supporting vets with
vets on the river again. It is now scheduled and
coming up on Saturday, August twenty fourth, twenty twenty four.
And so now we're going to take another short break
and we'll be back. Hi. This is Rob Kane, and
(22:09):
I just want to remind you it's all there in Leclair.
You guessed it.
Speaker 5 (22:12):
Cody Road and the Cody Road Historic District honors the
namesake of the iconic William Buffalo Bill Cody, an American soldier,
bison hunter, and showmen with national notoriety today. Over sixty
structures create the Historic District in Laclare, Iowa, a nine
block stretch of US sixty seven reaching all throughout our
rivertown both picturesque views of the Mighty Mississippi River. This
(22:36):
district contains both residential and commercial structures filled with some
of the best eateries, boutiques, gift shops, museums, and historical
sites found in Leclaire, Iowa. On your visit, you'll find
a healthy mix of old timey appeal in the rustic
downtown buildings and modern dwellings with glass fronts and large
parking lots for visitors. So yes, there's a little something
(22:56):
for everyone.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
That's right. It's all there in Leclair. Wait to see you,
hi everyone, and welcome back again to living in Leclair. Well,
we've been talking about some of the events that are
coming up this summer, particularly in the month of August.
Lots going on in Leclair. The levees being used for
two different car shows this month again it's August third
(23:18):
with the Heartland British Car Show and August twenty fourth
for Vets on the River Vets supporting Vets, and then
you have Tugfest and Tugfest is August eighth, ninth, and
tenth this year, So be sure and check out all
these events that are coming down. Yeah, September not quite
as many things going on, but we're working on coming
(23:39):
up with all sorts of fun events. The same thing
in October, you know, October you have the Fall Fest
with the River Valley Optimus Club involved and putting on
a festival with crafts and food and all sorts of
things going on the levee. It is on a Sunday,
so that's coming up in October. We're also looking at
(24:01):
doing Fall Market Days, probably in the middle of October.
And then you also have the Witches Walk that will
be the Saturday before Halloween, and that's always a cool
event to see all the kids all dressed up and
parading around downtown and getting their treats from all the
downtown businesses. So that's something that's pretty interesting now just
(24:22):
a sneak preview or a sneak thought, so to speak.
Also in September this year, we're going to do something
new and different. A few of us are getting together
as a committee to discuss what we're going to do
about all these buffaloes in town. Now, if you've wondered
what's going on, there are buffaloes, and these are concrete buffaloes.
Different businesses in town have them. There are now eighteen
(24:45):
of them. Everyone is choosing how to decorate them, and
several have already been painted. Others are still in their
natural forms, so to speak, waiting to be painted. But
what we're going to do in September throw together some
type of event to sort of unveil and celebrate the
buffaloes in Leclaire. Well, we call it the Buffalo Stampede,
(25:09):
maybe Buffalo's on Parade. It'll be something along those lines.
And we're gonna have a special day where people can
come out and check out all the buffaloes, take pictures
with them. We could have a scavenger hunt. All sorts
of ideas that we're discussing. So stay tuned and watch,
you know, the Leclair, Iowa Facebook page, Instagram. Just be
(25:29):
aware that there's going to be some sort of fun
event related to these buffaloes. You'll want to be involved
because there will be some good prizes and some fun,
fun times to be had. And again, it's just something
to draw attention and bring people to Leclaire. We want
people to enjoy all the amenities we have, all the
great shops, we have, the unique boutiques, the great dining
(25:51):
that's downtown, all that sort of thing. And one other thing. Okay,
I am doing a plug because you know, Shelley sweetson
Stations has moved in next to and Hattie's and I
don't know if you've tried it yet, but Shelley is
also serving breakfast sandwiches, and so a small menu of
lunch sandwiches. Now, this isn't table service where you sit
(26:12):
down in order, you actually order and then food is
brought to you or you can take it away. But boy,
her breakfast sandwiches are pretty darn amazing. I've had them
twice now, so again check out Shelley's Sweet Sensations. They're
opening up at eight o'clock on I believe it's gosh,
Monday through Saturday, and then they open at noon on Sunday.
(26:33):
So again it's a new business in downtown Leclaire. Love
to see Leclair support that. In addition, Starbucks has now
opened up near Fairway, so I've seen plenty of cars
already driving through as they just opened this past week.
So things are happening in Leclair. You can just keep
a watch for what's going on and come on downtown
and visit us and check out the levy and all
(26:55):
these fun events that are going on, and again, enjoy
everything that's going on in LaClaire. And don't forget if
I remember everything correctly, I don't have it in front
of me. But tonight should be the first movie night
that parks and recus putting on and it's a great,
great idea, so be sure and check that out online
for all the details to go see. I believe they're
(27:16):
playing Top Gun Maverick, so it's more for adults this
time having an outdoor movie. So again, those are things
that are going on. We're going to take another short
break and we'll be right back.
Speaker 3 (27:30):
Signing up for Medicare doesn't have to be complicated. With

Speaker 2 (28:09):
Hi everyone, and welcome back to Living Leclair. I really
want to thank you for listening this week and again
you know how thankful I am right now to all
the sponsors into the Buffalo Bill Museum and everything that
happened on June twenty ninth where we had the Buffalo
Bill Wild West Show out of Cody Elementary. We had
a one hundred and ninetieth birthday party for Leclair down
