Speaker 1 (00:00):
Seven thirty seven and gives us a chance in to
step in with the sports editor of the Grand Forks Herald.
It's Tom Miller on this Valentine's Day. He of course
happily married with a couple of kids, and hopefully he's
gotten his boys their Valentines to give Mom, and he's
(00:21):
already got that taken care of here on this Friday morning.
I guess so that he's not in the doghouse. Tom,
how are you doing on this Valentine's Day?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Well, you set me up for failure. I got two
boys in red shirts. That's that was the biggest win
I got.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Well, I mean you should have some red shirts. They
form a Red River rough Rider himself. I guess, so
you should have a few of those on hand. But yeah,
you know again, Valentine's Day always always an interesting one
for the guys to I don't want They say, I
don't want anything, but then they do want something. And
(00:59):
can you read between the lines? You apparently figured it out.
You you've read between the lines, and you get you've
you've got it all figured out at your place.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
We'll go with that, okay, right.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
I wish we had it figured out in basketball, but
we don't you know. I was saying this morning, in
the first half half hour of my show here with
Tim Paul in the morning, complete under nonsense. I said,
you know, it's class half empty on the first half.
What's interesting about that first half is so often the
talk has been about the defensive side of the ball.
If there's been you know, a looseness or or a
(01:36):
falling short, it's been on the defensive end. Actually, they
got stops. Denver turned it over for him just as
much as North Dakota did in that first half. And
but the problem was is that it was a shot
off of one pass. It was a forcing a pass
and a backcut early in a possession. Really that wasn't there. Offensively,
(01:56):
they did it to themselves with the really kind of
some interesting choices offensively in that in that first half
last night. And I will say the glass half full
in me. I said to our listeners, I said, well,
this is a North Dakota team where maybe earlier this season,
if they are down by double digits, they would have
maybe raised up the white flag and said and relented
(02:17):
and said well now gonna be here. Well, and I say,
you know, the NBA is a great example, if you're
down eighteen twenty twenty five, it can go in a
blink of an eye. And credit to North Dakota, they
just kept whittling it away in the second half. Too
much to do. They got all the way to a
one possession game, a one point game, couldn't figure it
out to somehow steal it back from Denver, who prevails
(02:38):
sixty eight to sixty four. Maybe Tom, and I'm gonna
let you in here, I've been talking a lot here.
Maybe that's a whole basic picture of North Dkota's season
in one in one game, basically, what are your thoughts?
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Yeah, you know, it's just, you know, I think that
maybe adds to the frustration a little bit that they looked,
you know, entirely different there in the second half. That
kind of makes you you scratch your head about the
first half. And I'm sure coach Paul Saylor is is
uh scratching his head, you know, I I'm sure he's
(03:17):
frustrated with this bunch a little bit. You know. I
thought Tracey eaganstaff had some pointed comments after the game
about you know, kind of basically maturity level, right, you know,
it wasn't impressed with the way they even warmed up.
So yeah, you know, there's just a team that hasn't
quite figured it out and they are certainly running out
(03:40):
of time, and you know, it's it's disappointing because we've
seen we saw that team at the Betty you know,
put the basically the number one team in the country
on the ropes in Alabama. And maybe that was an
unrealistic bar to set, but you know, when you have
the capability of doing that and then having the first
(04:02):
halfic they had here last night, that's tough, tough the stomach.
As a Unie fan, I think I think fans are
getting at a little restless with with some of those performances.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
No, and I get it right, And I also get
it when a coach, Paul Sather says to be in
the post game, he says, hey, I'll take it, you know,
I mean, I'm the coach. You know these are things.
But I also say, I said, after we left our conversation,
I said, well, I don't think you a person can
do that because I'll say this because if I look
(04:35):
at Northcote's best teams, the ones that I've actually covered,
you know, you look at the team that went to
the Big Sky Championship game against Weavers State. By this
time of year, the coaching, the hay was in the barn.
You know, it was the leaders of the team. It
was the Webbs, Anderson's Puffs, Shoolers, those guys. You know,
(04:56):
they were basically you know, yeah, I give us the scout,
we'll go through the scout, but we're gonna run. We're
running things, and we're gonna make sure everybody's accountable, right
And you know, you look at the next iteration, Quentin Hooker,
Drick Bernstein, you know, and others, Corey Baldwin, Geno crandall.
He got to that point at this time of year.
It was like, hey, we get it, We've been coached.
(05:18):
We'll handle it, you know, basically, And and sometimes it's
that leadership, it's that it's within the locker room. Eventually
they turned the corner and they basically take it amongst themselves.
That's that's those good teams that you're talking about. And
and I think there's maybe a little sums into what
Tracon is saying, is like, hey, even in warm ups,
we're we're not at the right place. That was a
little alarming, And I just I see where the frustration
(05:41):
is with coaching sometimes, but I also see it as
a big picture is that when you watch, if you
really want to see the best teams, they're they're kind
of player led it at a certain point. That's my thought.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Yeah, and that's that's double edged too. Right. This isn't
high school. This is college. You know, you you you
assembled it. You didn't just get who's enrolled in your
high school?
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Uh right?
Speaker 2 (06:02):
And and you know I'm not taking a shot at
false sailor there. I think sometimes you you mix the
ingredients and you see what you made, and and uh,
sometimes the pieces don't come together. How how maybe you'd
hoped they're envisioned and hmm, you know it's just not.
It's not clicking this group right now. And you know,
(06:25):
hopefully they can they can pass things together this year
and and I'm going to have to address it in
the off season. I think Paul Saylor's frustrated with the
amount of I feel like he's he shows the fire
on the sideline and I don't I don't know if
this is a team that emits a similar emotion. You know.
(06:46):
I think that's been frustrating for him.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Sure, I think that's a fair assessment as well. You know,
I I look at it from the standpoint as well
that you know, if you want to be really glass
half full and really be the optimist, and I'll I'll
do that just for this last comment in regard to this,
and I'll let you close it out and maybe you'll
add or not add, but I just say, you know,
if you look at it the way it is, obviously
it's clear in this league this year, the North Kota
(07:10):
is capable of probably playing with nearly every team in
the league. They've proven they can beat South Dakota State,
who may end up being the top team after everything
said and done. They got a key win last night,
they got beat by Omaha in the last second shot.
You know, so clearly they can be in games. If
there's one thing you can say about this year, and
I've never been a great advocate of the playing game,
(07:33):
maybe this is the year where if you just get
in and play, everybody's beatable. Basically. Maybe this year, maybe
that's the that Maybe that's the case this year.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Yeah, there's you know, I think more depth in the
Summit League in terms of an eight or nine or
seven that can beat one, two and three. You know,
it's it's as balanced as we've seen it, you know,
on the glass half empty. I think I think people
(08:03):
that are frustrated with saying, you know, hey, you know,
this could be a dangerous team come tournament time. You know.
I think at some point here I think UNI fans
are thinking, gosh, would be nice to say we're tough.
We could be tough in the regular season too, right, Yeah,
you know, I think it gets frustrating just leaning back
(08:25):
on that line that that maybe things could you know,
produce some magic in a one week span of SEO calls.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
No, I get it. That's a that's a fair thing
as well, no doubt about it. On the women's side,
it hasn't been as it also hasn't been bright and sunshiny.
They are on a slide right now with a rivalry
game coming in tomorrow. They played really well in the
rivalry game down and Fargo. A couple of plays it's
a different result, but there just doesn't look to be
where where did that team go? I mean, turnovers are
(08:56):
mounting again. Obviously they mounted for the men last night
as well, but it's just it's this is a tough
one with the U and D women right now, and
you know, you want to be playing your best late
in the season. They're not really doing that. And they've
got a big game when it's an in state battle
coming into Grand Forks. Boy, it's it's uh, it's a
(09:17):
tough one tomorrow. With the way the recent results have
gone for the Fighting ladies, don't you think.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Yeah, they've had uh, you know, kind of a roller coaster.
You almost thought that they were turning the corner there
the way they've played against South Dakota State and North
Dakota State on the road, and then uh, you know,
the Saint Thomas game just really got away from him.
And you know, like you said, it's, uh, it's the
(09:43):
same walls. It's turning the ball over at a high
rate and not shooting the three very well. And those
are just not going to be a recipe for that
team to to come out on top. And you know,
they gotta they gotta be able to find some consistency
and take care of the basketball and share it a
(10:03):
little bit. And you know, I just that one's frustrating too,
I think because people thought that that maybe some things
had clicked there for a little stretch and now and
now it's back away from them a little bit. Yea.
You know, there's no reason that that's another team that
can compete with anybody in that league. They can also
(10:26):
lose anybody in that league if they're.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
Not off, no doubt about it. Hey, let's go to
some other brighter spots. I know last night was tough
for Crookston girls hockey. I thought it was a great
story I had them. I talked about it yesterday. For
the Section eight A Girls Hockey title game, I said,
world will run, win, run, running away. I think they
beat them handily during the regular season, and credit Crookston.
(10:47):
They played their tails off last night in Thiever or
falls for the Section eight eight girls championship. They do fall,
But I guess it was quite a performance by the
Pirates to try to win that game and only lost
by just a couple of big late plays. But I
was reading the article there and so tip your cap there,
you got eat Green fourteen. You're high boys winning a
good road game after being down by seven. They might
(11:10):
be a good watch here down the stretch. Sacred hurt
boys might be a good watch as we get further
down the stretch of the season as well. So so
there's some local stories here that we can follow, correct, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Greater Grand Forks basketball has been surprising and really strong
this year. You know, even Center girls under under our
guy Mike Mathison, you know, haven't won a ton of games,
but you know are you can really see a lot
of improvement there in that program. The Rediver girls, you know,
has had to deal with a post Joss Schiller experience
(11:45):
and they've managed to win double digit games here. Rediver
Boys have had really good moments. East Grand Forks boys
like you mentioned, you know, being able to have a
great season despite losing you know, probably their top scorer
in Austin Rustling to an injury here. You know. So
(12:07):
the the Greater Grand Forks basketball is, especially on the
East side, has a lot of hopecome tournament time.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Well, yeah, and I think so many. So oftentimes we
get kind of pointed towards hockey, and rightfully so, and
I think those will be great stories as well. With
the the East Region Hockey tournament just around the corner
and the Section eight hockey tournament just around the corner,
the usual suspects will all be involved. Rever Central East
Grand Forks Senior High But yeah, I think Greater Grand
(12:37):
Forks basketball has its ears perked up in a lot
of instances, and it's it's worth a watch, and it's
worth the follow I think. I think you're exactly right
about that.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
Yeah, And like you mentioned, boy hockey is wrapping up quick.
It's crazy that next weekend is going to be in
Grand Works, Grand Forks. We'll have East Region hockey, you
Indie hockey, and UH Minnesota Section eight A hockey at
the Civic Center.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
Do you need to hire me as a stringer for
some coverage or just yeah?
Speaker 2 (13:09):
I mean we are taking anything at this point.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
Oh, have have laptop, will travel, I guess, or I
don't even know if I have a laptop anymore, have
phone will travel basically, so you know you can write
out a story out of it.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
I don't care.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
Okay, sounds good. Hey, Tom, I I guess the last
question because you're a great hockey mind. Who starts in
Golden who starts in gold tonight?
Speaker 2 (13:35):
For you and the hockey Caleb Johnson, Well.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
I wouldn't roll it out. I would okay.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
I mean I listened to Tim the other night while
I was driving her out of the car, and that
game wrapped up, and I thought Uh, I thought Tim
had you know, had had to get on just kind
of talking about how boys just when you thought it
was gonna be the Hope Head Quick Show, you know,
you and the Hockey as a series, and you completely
(14:04):
kind of reassessed. So I guess you got to keep
rotating until a hot hand arrives. Yeah. Al, he's got
a string two.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
Together here right right, I don't I And that's you know,
part of the challenge for North Skota Hockey in a nutshell,
right they would love to just see one guy take
that job and run with it, and it just has
not happened. Maybe it happens this weekend. We'll have to
wait and see. Tom. We appreciate it. We know that
you and your staff are incredibly busy at this time
(14:35):
of year and will only get busier over the next
thirty days. But we will follow what you and your
team do with great coverage inside the Grand Forks Herold
on the digital platform. I encourage people to get a subscription.
It's worth it. It covers local sports stories like you
like they've always done, and I appreciate you dropping in
and kind of guiding us around kind of what you
(14:55):
guys have been following and looking at as well. Thanks Tom, Ye,
great to chat with you.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Take care of Paul.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
All right, sounds good. There goes Tom Miller, sports editor
of the Grand Forks Herald on this Friday, February fourteenth.
All right, Yeah, it's good to kind of get Tom's
perspective on some of these things because he and his
team they're going to a lot of these games, even
the ones that I can get to, and they write
about it, so I definitely rely on their stories in
the Herald. It's seven fifty three, it's news timer a
(15:24):
little late to it.
