Speaker 1 (00:01):
In studio right now, nothing but champions, that's right. In fact,
news came down what late yesterday early this morning. Two
of the ladies in the room that have arrived are
going to the National Indoor Championships for NCAA Indoor Running
and Track and Field as We've got multiple champions and
(00:21):
we're going to talk to all of them. Tiffany Magnuson
from Sweden, I believe, right, good morning, yeah. And also
Kenna Curry what from the state of South Dakota, Okay,
from the Rushmore State and Jaden are proud Canadian back there, yep, Okay,
all right, So all of them champions here this morning.
(00:41):
We're glad that they could swing in and join us
here on our Wednesday student athlete drop in and we
have a lot to talk about with them because it
was an awesome something League Indoor Championship. One of the
reasons was the whole team men and women did exceptionally well.
These three individuals were awesome. I guess we'll start with
Tiffany only for the simple reason the pentathlon. We were
(01:04):
trying to figure out what everything went into the pentathlon.
So you got to be a good hurdler, you got
to throw shot, you gotta do? What long jump you
got to do? Eight hundred? Are you just a person
who can't make up their mind what they want to do?
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Well, it's fun. It's very diverse. You get to do
a lot of different stops. It's it's fun.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
So, you know, you being a Swede. Swedes are known
as being very stoic, at least to me. The ones
that you know, they kind of have. They're kind of
a tough read I always feel so. So do your
teammates feel like they can't read you some days basically
because you're a little too Swedish.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Well, I guess it's hard for.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
Me to tell, but okay, no, she's she's she doesn't
she's not too sw Swedish for the rest of you.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
She doesn't have a good poker face me.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
Okay, okay, So now, Jaden, you are going to the
national championships in the five thousand.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
But you you.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Won the five thousand, the three thousand, and the mile,
you did the triple win. But can I just say
my favorite part of following all this as I was
in South Dakota with you and d men's basketball, was
I saw you on the podium. You were in the
one spot and NDSU had a runner that finished third,
(02:28):
and she decided to flash that hand signal horns up,
and I'm sure you're thinking, well, if you're gonna do that,
I'm on the top spot, I'm doing horns down.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
That was awesome. High five for that. That was great
way to go. Was that planned? What were you thinking there?
Speaker 4 (02:43):
No, I mean, it's just kind of our little hand
signal that we do. You know, you got to you.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Gotta represent the seven oh one flagship university, and you
certainly did that. I was just beaming. I thought that
was great. So tell me a little bit about kind
of what's the distance that you really.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Love to run.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
I'd say the five k is kind of my specialty.
Usually for me, the longer distances I excel more at.
So the mile was definitely the most challenging during the meet.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
And Tiffany, what is your favorite event? I mean, which
is the one that you really because you have to
do high jump, I think as well, what is the
one the couple that you really enjoy as part of
the pentathlon right now?
Speaker 2 (03:23):
I would say the long jumping hurdles. Okay, it's I'm
more of the faster runner, not so much throwing.
Speaker 5 (03:32):
I'm trying too.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
Yeah, so like you have to throw a shot, you're
you must be like, let's just get some good points
and move on.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
It's kind of basically, well that's good, Kenna.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
We were taking earlier because in the indoor I think
it's shot and weight throw.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
And when you go outdoor here.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
You're gonna add in discus, you're gonna add in, You're
gonna add in what hammer throw because the way throw
goes away and you're going to the National Indoor Championships
on weight throw. So I think you were like, only
what do they call it a two turn originally? When
you got into the weight throw here.
Speaker 5 (04:11):
At U and D.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
Yeah, what happened?
Speaker 6 (04:13):
I mean, coming in I didn't even really know what
it was. And then when I got him, then I
became a two turner. And then yeah, I think I
just as I got better, we were able to add more.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Yeah, and here's you want to know the coolest little
thing that we're gonna let slip right now about the throwers, Tim,
I bet you didn't know this. So they go to
the Summing League Indoor Championships, they thought, you know, coach talk,
who's their coach was you know, supposed to be there
coaching them up. They're so good, they go win some
league championships. He wasn't even there. He was off having
(04:43):
a baby. So you let him off the hook. Did
you just say, we got it from your coach, We're
good pretty much.
Speaker 6 (04:49):
We're like, you go have a baby, you go have fun,
We'll take care of this on this head.
Speaker 5 (04:54):
You go take care of your family.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Yeah. How cool is that? Basically?
Speaker 1 (04:57):
And then all the throwers did really well, So have
been really kind of a really good team building moment
to all be together and really helping one another, which
I think happens anyway, right.
Speaker 6 (05:07):
Yeah, I think especially for the conference meet, we just
really had to lean on each other and hey, can
you record this?
Speaker 5 (05:13):
Oh what do you see here? Just coach each other up,
and I think that's what helped.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
So I'm gonna put this out there, Kenna, I bet
out of all the track and fielders, and then there
are many, I'm guessing you're the best answer.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
You want to know? Why? Am I right?
Speaker 5 (05:32):
Well?
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Because some might say, okay, here's here's why.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Because if you are doing all those steps in the circle,
you've got to have the best feed out of anybody
on the team fair, Is anybody ever told you that?
Speaker 5 (05:46):
No, but I appreciate it. I will take it. I'm
gonna start telling people, Hey, I've been called the best answer.
Speaker 6 (05:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Well, I mean, has anybody gotten that deep onto any
morning show so far? Basically? Has anybody had that day?
Speaker 5 (05:59):
No? But it's I'll take that hot take.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
You're gonna take that hot take? Okay, Jade, would you
agree or disagree or what are you thinking?
Speaker 4 (06:05):
I mean, she's probably better than me, so.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
So je Jade, I want to ask you this because
I was thinking that when Yunsha came to U and
D last year, that you know, she'd kind of set
all the marks and we're kind of done and nobody'd
ever touched those. And then within a few months you're like, no, no, no,
that's that's not gonna happen. We're gonna break all those
(06:30):
records again. We're gonna set all new records here while
I'm here. I mean, how did you do that? Was
it helpful to run with a person like that? Like
when did you kind of know that you finally hit
a different level for yourself?
Speaker 4 (06:43):
I mean, I think having Yenja there to train with
has definitely helped me like just step up my game
to the next level. You know, the best way to
improve is to train with people who are better than you.
And then I think I've just been so consistent for
so long that eventually the training just kind of clicked.
And this indoor season, it's just been huge breakthroughs for.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Yeah, and that's that's gotta be really interesting. Now, do
you do you like indoor better than outdoor or and
this is for all of you, or do you all
prefer outdoor more than indoor? Are you looking forward to
the outdoor season? I guess is there a preference?
Speaker 4 (07:15):
I think for me, I definitely enjoy outdoors more, a
little more.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
Okay, because there's wind and everything.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
Yeah, although when it's a really nice day, I think
it's just enjoyable being outside. Sometimes in indoor tracks that
air can get a little stuffy.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
So sure, okay, what about you on the thrower side, Kenna.
Speaker 6 (07:31):
I think there's positive negatives to both. Yeah, indoors perfect
conditions every single time. Sure, outdoors you might be throwing
in rain, which is okay, you gotta.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
You gotta grab more gear basically when you're going to
the outdoor event and in so Tiffany, that's the biggest
thing for you. There's so many different events that you're
gonna be involved in. Win could be a factor in
the jumps, the hurdles, all those things. Do you have
a preference? Do you like indoor best or what happens
during the outdoor season for you?
Speaker 2 (08:00):
As for now, I do like indoors better. Since I'm
not a big thrower, I need to do two throws outdoors.
We want indoors for now.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
So the great thing about you and D and the Pentathlon,
I think all three podiums were U and D.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Yeah, how cool is that?
Speaker 1 (08:16):
Oh that's so cool. Yeah, I mean so you guys
are all pushing one another.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Then, yeah, we have a great team. We're ranked top
five in the Mason right now.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
So for pentathlon, Yeah, that's wild. That's so cool when
you see three U and D people up on a
podium for one event, that that's just the awesome thing.
Who was the biggest surprise on the women's side? Was
it our Was it our four hundred runner that was
ranked ninth or whatever and coming in or eight hundred runner? Yeah,
that it was ranked Brooklyn was like ranked ninth coming
(08:45):
in and she won the event correct, does does the
does the whole team just celebrate like crazy when something
like that happens. Tell me what the feeling is being
an observer, because I think as a competitor in an event,
you're all kind of locked in while that's happened, and
when you win, you win. But when you see a
teammate go off or something and maybe do something unexpected,
that's got to be a lot of fun for you.
(09:07):
Anybody can answer that one.
Speaker 6 (09:08):
I think it's really great to see, especially when you're
I mean, our team is fairly close, so seeing all
the hard work and dedication payoff for one person specifically
is really just rewarding in itself and just you just
feel so proud.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
Yeah, what's that new locker room area like over at
the part two of the Fritz Pollard and you what.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
Are your thoughts on that?
Speaker 4 (09:29):
Yeah, it's incredible. It's so amazing having all our facilities
in one place now, it's definitely just going to help
us level up our training even more.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
I guess if you live in Memorial, Hitsla up a
Memorial village, you wake up, walk out of bed, walk
over to the locker room, put on your training gear,
you go trade and the way you go and you're
back into class. So here's the other question, some fun stuff.
What are we going into here at the University of Northakota.
What are we pursuing?
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Tiffany, mechanical engineering?
Speaker 1 (09:52):
Of course you are, Yeah, with all those those events
that are so technical, you're going to be an engineer.
Speaker 3 (09:59):
I just knew it. I knew it. That's perfect, Jayden.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
I'm doing molecular biology, of course you are.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
Yeah, yeah, you gotta, you gotta, You're you're while you're
running such long distances, you're probably thinking about what's happening,
happening at the cellular level basically, so you're thinking, like,
what's happening here right now?
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Kena, How about you?
Speaker 6 (10:18):
I'm going into speech and language pathology and I actually
just got into grad school, like last week?
Speaker 1 (10:23):
Did you really okay? And grad school? Will that happen
where you're at you? Indeed, you're at you. Indeed, that's awesome,
congratulations on that. Fantastic. You guys are doing awesome and
what you're pursuing and and obviously thriving in your specialties
as well. And you know, for those that are going
to the nationals, you don't really get a break, So
(10:44):
but you're okay with that?
Speaker 4 (10:46):
Yeah, I mean it's definitely exciting to get to represent
un D at nationals. So I'd take that over a break.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
And when when where is that? By the way, we're
trying to figure that out.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
It's in Virginia Beach.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
Oh, it is in Virginia Beach. Okay, so away we
go to the indoors and that's coming up. Went in
two weeks or one week, next week, next week?
Speaker 5 (11:03):
Yep?
Speaker 1 (11:04):
Okay, Wow, you guys have a crazy schedule. Okay, last question.
A lot of fun throw teammates under the bus. They're
not listening to radio anyway. Okay, who who's the messiest
teammate in the locker room that you're just like, oh,
come on, come on, who's the one you just are
like And they might be the most delightful person, But
who's the messiest teammate? Who's the neatest teammate? Everything is
(11:27):
just compartmentalized basically perfectly.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
I feel like the nicest locker is definitely Kenna's.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
Kenna.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Yeah, are you a little OCD Kenna?
Speaker 5 (11:37):
Okay? Not cleanest.
Speaker 6 (11:39):
I was gonna vote myself for Messius because I definitely
like to go outside of my space.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
But I have taken the time to decorate my locker.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Okay, you look at hers and you get inspired, even
not even though it's not for you, you get inspired
by looking at her locker.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
Really okay, so you throw down the example.
Speaker 6 (11:56):
Yeah, I mean I only get the thought the locker
for three more months. I'm like, why not duck it out?
So I printed all these pictures, I put up quotes.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
Oh, that's awesome. If one teammate's gonna cook for everybody.
And here's a great thing about track and field athletes,
they get they love eating. They can eat as much
as they want because they're constantly burning fuel. So if
one teammate says I'm gonna cook, you'd absolutely take them
up on it because you just know they're gonna be
a good cook.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Honestly. Coach really yeah, I have to give him that one.
He's a great cook.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
Really, coaches got he's good in the kitchen.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
And then the coach baron Campper, coach baron County really well.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
I think that's a perfect place to end the interview
because you know, you're probably gonna get some gold stars
for saying that. And as we put that up on
the podcast. He'll go back and listen. You may not
have to do the extra training basic a statement like that. So, ladies,
congratulations on your outstanding abilities here that were showcased here
over the last couple of months and leading up to
(12:51):
the SUTH League championships and winning those something League championships
and then number two representing you and D in such
a great way. So thanks for stopping by and talking
a little bit about your successes here and we wish
you all the best here in the outdoor season. You're
not gonna see me chewing up road miles behind Jayden.
She'd be way away after the first few meters, less
(13:11):
than ten. She'd be well out in front by that time.
And I'm not coming over to throw either, because if
I do any spinning around, I'm gonna be dizzy for
a very long time. And I'm not doing any jumps
with you. That's not happening. So thanks again, have a
great rest of your outdoor season and good luck at
the nationals. Thanks for coming in today. Thank you all right,
there's U and D track and field Tiffany our pentathlon champion,
(13:35):
Jaden are distance champion five thousand and three thousand, Miler
and Kenna also our thrower in the shot put and
in the weight throw dropping by this morning. With the
U and D student athletes, it's always great when we
have a chance to talk to them, so when we return,
we'll close out the show.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
Next on the Fan
