Speaker 1 (00:00):
I posted a video of my dogs. I don't know
if you saw this. Did you see my video that
I posted about my dogs?

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Oh? Is it the one at the restaurant?

Speaker 1 (00:05):
Yeah, we're at the bar. Yeah, all that looked awesome
And I got my two dogs and they're just enjoying
getting Lovin's because you can take the dogs to the
bar and uh, yeah, they're sighthounds, they're greyhounds.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
You know.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
What their favorite things do is in the World Race.
They love to run as fast as they can. And
there's actually a really cool event that I've just kind
of been learning about that I think, you know, maybe
you may not have heard of or known about, and
maybe you have, but I'm here to talk about it.
It's called coursing and Fast cat And joining us is

(00:37):
my friend Kent Standardford and Kent, thank you so much
for being a part of the show today and being
in helping us understand what the heck's going on.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Here, No problem, I'm glad to do it.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Okay. So I found this because I have watched a
lot of dog show dog shows recently, and I just
love doing stuff with my dogs.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
You know.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
It's just like, how can I do fun things in
activity these with my dogs and greyhounds aren't great for
you know, agility, They don't you know, necessarily do well
in like flyball, for instance, But coursing and fast cat
are like right up there, alley, And it looks like
there's a big event happening coming up at the end

(01:16):
of the month here for anybody that's interested. So how
about you kind of tell me what coursing is for
somebody who's never heard of this before.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Well, coursing is actually what they termed the term for
hunting with sighthounds. They course, they chase anything that pretty
much runs away from them, and the basic rules for
coursing came out of England and Ireland long ago, chasing hairs.

(01:48):
And in the United States there is still a lot
of coursing live game out in the Western States, but
for the rest of us it's lore coursing. They chase
a lure, and the lure is nothing more than a
white plastic bag, yeah, garbage bag from the kitchen basically,

(02:10):
And the American Sighthound Field Association has been lawer coursing
since the late seventies in the United States.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Interesting, so when we talk about this incentive, you know, like, yeah,
the whole prize is to try to catch you know,
what you're hunting if you're actually out there coursing with
actual live animals back in the day. But this being
just kind of a sporting event, it's all about time, right,
You're trying to go through the course as fast as possible.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
With the fast Cats, yes, it is. With lower coursing.
There are judges and they're judged on five separate categories speed, agility, enthusiasm, endurance.
So that's how lower coursing works. But the Fast Cats
is all about straight line speed, kind of like drag rae.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
I love that. So there's a Fast Cat event happening.
This is going to be at Hastings Banner Park in
Omaha on the twenty ninth and thirtieth, and this is
with the Borzoy Club of Greater Omaha, another fantastic sidehound breed,
a little bit hairrier than my greyhounds, but beautiful dogs.
And they're in partnership with the Nebraska Coursing Association to
do this. So fast Cat does cat stand for something?

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yes, cat is coursing ability test.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
So how does a fast cat work.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
The fast cats the hounds? Well, I say, I'm sorry
I'm going to speak like a sighthound person. It's the
hounds or the dog. They all run individually and they're
brought into an enclosure. It's completely fenced and there are
timing lights set up one hundred yards apart. And with

(03:54):
the timing lights they are you get the lapse time
for one hundred yards and that's converted into miles per
hour and they can earn titles. They're fast cat titles
from their miles per hour and having run so fast

(04:16):
for I don't recall all of the point system exactly,
but they are able to earn titles that way.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
It's really cool. We're speaking with Kent Standardford, who is
with the Nebraska Corse Association who are helping the Borzoi
Club of Greater Omaha put on this fast Head event
at Hastings Banner Park on March twenty ninth and thirtieth.
So it's not as easy as just hey, show up
on the day of and have the opportunity to, you know,
have your dog get its miles per hour and try

(04:42):
to win this thing. You know, you have to kind
of think ahead of time. So what are some of
the things that somebody like me who's never done something
like this before. What would I have to do if
I want my dogs to participate?

Speaker 2 (04:54):
There is? The big thing is to go find get
the premium list and get your dog registered with the AKC,
which is as simple as I believe filling out and
you can bring that to our event and then you
would enter your dog and that's you can enter it online.

(05:18):
We will actually be able to offer day of entries.
We weren't planning to, but our entries have not filled
up completely, so we'll still have lots available so they
may be able to come out to Banner Park and
get entered that day.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
It's such a fun thing to be able to do
something like this with your dogs, and like you mentioned,
with it being AKC, you actually can keep track of
this stuff in like you mentioned, there are some awards
and titles that are going to be available for the
dogs that do well. Does this take training? I know,
like agility, You're not going to take a dog that
you haven't practiced a lot for agility because of all

(05:58):
the different you know, apps are different obstacles. They'll have
this being just run as fast as you can. But
what rules are there? Because I'm sure you can't like
use a treat or be running with your dog to
try to get it to get to its top speed.
What's kind of uh what what what is the fast
cat actually look like? And what rules are there for
the humans as well.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Well for the For the humans that you have to
have one person to release and one person to catch.
And the good thing about fast cats is the person
that's catching is generally the owner. Because you can call
to your dog all the way down. You can even
if they're not actually chasing the lure. As long as
they run all the way one hundred yards through through

(06:44):
both timing lights, you'll get a time. But after they
have done it one time, they generally chase the lure
and as as soon as the lureer moves, you're you
can release your dog.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Sounds just like a perfect mix of getting to do
something fun with your dog while also your dog's natural
instincts kind of like kicking in and having a chance
to off leash run for one hundred yards, and like
you said, it's completely fenced in, so you don't have
to worry about your dog if it has not so
great recall getting loose and never coming back. So exactly,
it's really the best of both worlds for people who
are looking for more information. Is there a place online

(07:23):
Kent that people can find out more about this?

Speaker 2 (07:26):
The easiest way to go for this event itself is
go on Facebook to Nebraska Nebraska Coursing Association's Facebook group
and you can join there and you'll be able to
see the advertising for our event and there are links
there to join.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
I really hope that a lot of people take advantage
of this and hopefully we'll be able to take our
greyhounds out and enjoy it as well. Coming up a
little bit later on this month, it is the twenty
ninth and the thirtieth at Hastings Banner Park as the
Boy Club of Greater Omaha in partnership with the Nebraska
Coursing Association doing a fast cat event and just a

(08:07):
great way to have fun with your dog, especially if
you're a side honed owner like me. Kent, thank you
so much for the information today and good luck with
the event and can't wait to see how many dogs
get a chance to have some fun with you guys.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
That's great. Thank you very much, all right.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
Kent Standerford with the Nebraska Coursing Association joining us today.
How fun is that Yeah, let's take the dog and
they get to run as fast as they can and
we get to see how fast that miles per hour
looks like, and maybe you can win a prize.
