Speaker 1 (00:00):
In the meantime, though, we're telling you about some other
things that are happening in the area this weekend and
on Friday and Saturday. Very cool event happening at the
Mid America Center on the Council Bluff side of the river,
the PRCA Rodeo Council Bluff's PRCA Rodeo that stands for
the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Joining us is our friend
Greg McDonald to tell us all about it. Greg, thanks

(00:21):
so much for being on our show today. How are you?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
I'm great? How are you? I mean, other than the weather,
Rodeo week, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
It is rodeo week. That is awesome. Now we're sitting here.
I have actually watched quite a bit of rodeo lately.
My wife has gotten into liking to watch it at
a pretty high level. These are incredible athletes that have
a lot of courage. There's a lot of different things
to go on a rodeo, So can you kind of
outline some of the things that people will see when
they go check this out at the Mid America Center
this weekend?

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Absolutely so. Our gates are going to open at six thirty.
Performance starts at seven thirty. We'll have bareback riding, sadle
bronc riding for the bucking horse events, we'll also have
bullet riding. We're gonna have calgar and there's going to
be some timed event cowboy events too, tie down roping, seerstling,
and team roping.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
I love to see that. That's a cavalcade of different
events and you're going to be seeing some of the
great horsemanship that you can see across the board. Now.
Uh So, for this particular rodeo, a lot of people
are going to be interested. You know, how do you
get a building ready for rodeo and where do the
animals come from? Can you answer some of those questions
about the building itself right? Because the Mid America Center
is a great arena. It's got plenty of great seating.

(01:30):
There's not a bad seat in the place. But you
have to bring in a bunch of dirt right to
make this thing work.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Absolutely, we have dirt contracted. And it's always fun with
the winner run with the building rodeos because somebody has
to thaw that stuff out, keep thought, yeah, bring it in.
Most of the time, what happens is we'll come into
a building, they'll put Paulie down. A lot of times
we're covering ice. We are not doing that as the

(01:57):
Mid America so that makes it one step order. But yeah,
you bring, you put Paul down, you put dirt down,
and then you have to condition the dirt, make sure
you get at the right consistency. We want the animals
to be able to buck well, right. It's kind of
like having goods putting or you know, you want it
to be conditioned so animals can. I mean, they're athletes too, right,

(02:21):
and we want them to be able to compete at
their highest level too.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
We're speaking with Greg McDonald is talking about the Professional
Rodeo Cowboys Association Rodeo happening in the Mid America Center
on the Council Bluffs side of the river coming up
on Friday and Saturday. You mentioned the dirt and conditioning
it for the animals, and this is one thing.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
You know.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
I'm a horse racing fan too, so you know there's
all sorts of different conditions of the track as you
learn about it, when it gets wet and all that stuff.
You guys, the animals are a huge part. I mean,
like you can't do a roadio without the animals. So
let's talk about the horses first, what is it about
you know a horse that you were like, yeah, this
should be great for you know, a bucking bronco or

(03:04):
you know with a saddle, without a saddle, you know,
all this stuff, all these different things. Because I know
in some of the cases that people can bring their
own animals. What about this, you know for the rodeo,
for the guys that they're just riding a bucking bronco.
How do you figure out what horses are good this?

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Yeah, so this rodeo is produced by big Bucks Pro Rodeo.
Big Bucks is new. They just purchased the company. They
bought bucking stocks from a bunch of different places and
bought their card to be a stock contract for the PRCA.
Most of these animals are born to buck, right, So
Cody Flinton, who is the principal of Big Bucks Pro Rodeo,

(03:44):
he's four generations been raising bucking horses his entire life.
Knows how to take care handle them. It's just like
you would breed a race horse. Since you made that
that reference. These horses have lineage, right, they go way
back generations, so that's where they come from. Really, is

(04:07):
these born to buck programs and there's there's all kinds
of people that raise them as a hobby as well.
We also have you know, bucking stock sales. There's a
few every year where people come and they cowboys compete
on them, just like a regular rodeo, but the animals
are actually auctioned off when it's over. So that's how

(04:28):
a lot of people bring in new genetics and stuff
like that into their herds is through uh, some of
these other opportunities.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Yeah, I got to see what they have there. So
with that being said, you have them, you have bulls,
you got the calves and all that stuff that you're
working on with roping. What's the animal care like behind
the scenes, because I think a lot of people are
just kind of curious because there's like, yeah, you're tackling
these steers, these little these these calves, you're you're riding
these bulls or these horses. What's the actual animal care

(04:57):
like to make sure that the animals are safe while
still being able to have these competitions, which really go
back hundreds of years of the practicality of what these
sports kind of look like what they would have been
with practicality in the past.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Right, So all pr th rodeos have a veterinarian on staff,
and there'll be a local veterinarian that will come out
and check the animals, right, make sure that they're all
fit ready to compete. These are professional athletes. I will
tell you that these animals are fed and have extremely
good care. Right when we get calves to go to

(05:34):
these rodeos. You know, these calves will go to multiple
rodeos over you know, period of six months, and they're
very expensive. All this stuff is very expensive, so all
the best care is given to them. We just want
to make sure that when you are competing in let's
just use a rough document as an example, half of

(05:56):
the scores for the rider and half the score comes
from the animal, So you want the animal to be
in optimal conditions. There, again, are athletes, and so we
do everything we can in our power to make sure
that they have everything they need to be able to
perform at their highest level.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Yeah, and I got I've seen it firsthand, and I've
talked to people who are involved in these sports. They
take that very seriously. And you know it might be like,
oh wow, I can't believe they're tackling a calf, but
that calf we underestimate the sturdiness of some of these
animals and how much strength it actually takes to be
able to do what these guys do. And it's going
to be a lot of fun. So where can people

(06:33):
learn more? Greg? This is I really have fallen in
love with stuff like this when animals get a chance
to shine as well as humans who are working with
the animal or understanding the animals. And you got two
nights here Friday and Saturday. Where can people learn more
about the Council Buffs PRCA Rodeo.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
Well, I don't want them to miss out. It's the
bush Light Council Buffs Pro Rodeo. We also have the
Stellar tricklide riding cowgirls coming excuse me, And here's where
the Tara Flinton rides a horse called Mike. Mike was
born bucking horse and decided that that wasn't really going
to be his He went in a different direction than
the rest of his family. His family is his lineage,

(07:09):
if you will, our professional bucking horses and they are
at the top level make the national finals rodeo every year.
He decided he didn't want to go that route, so
he is currently used as a trick riding horse the
girls are doing, you know, basically gymnastics are on horseback.
It's awesome thing to watch, and we're going to be

(07:30):
at the Mid America Center. Tickets are on sale ticket Master.
You can also get your tickets at the box office
if you want to save your ticketing fees, that's the
way to go. Built tickets are twenty five dollars. Kids
