Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera on
Fox Sports fourteenth fifth Day powered by Nova Insurance Services
Insure your most prized possessions.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Good afternoon, everybody, Welcome to all Right in the ball
here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty Oh, Steve Rivera in
today with me is my usual Tuesday guy, Dave Silver,
Mister Tuesday, mister Tuesday.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Back October, mister October, No, that's mister November.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yeah. But do you shine in October? Yeah? And we
got Kenzie Mike on the other side. Hello, Hello, Wow,
you had a pretty good.

Speaker 4 (00:40):
Weekend, pretty fun. Yeah, I'd say, so what you do?
So I went down to Alabama. My roommate's friends go
to school down there, and we actually went to the
Alabama LSU game.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Some football.

Speaker 5 (00:54):
I saw some real football.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah I don't say that to people in there as well.

Speaker 5 (00:59):
Exactly where did you sit? So we sat in the
student section?

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Oh my yeah. So it was that like.

Speaker 5 (01:05):
It was like the whole the whole experience.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
So, got you already get your transfer papers out?

Speaker 5 (01:10):
No? No, I still love Arizona.

Speaker 4 (01:12):
I told everyone down there that I'm like, I love
the South, but I'm glad I go.

Speaker 5 (01:16):
To school where I did.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Did you wear Obama shirt?

Speaker 5 (01:18):
I did roll time evidence Socials.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
Yeah, I posted one picture at the tailgates. It was
pretty cool though. It was definitely definitely an experience for
the books.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
There are a number of kids that I know from
here who've gone to Alabama. They must be doing some
recruiting in southern Arizona somehow for some reason. But interestingly,
there's a couple of parents that I know and I've
asked them, like, where are your kids going to college?

Speaker 2 (01:43):
They said, Alabama from here. Well, you know, you know
this because you were in the business for fifteen, twelve
years whatever. It was the success of the athletic department
brings in people. I'm sure that's why Kenzie came down.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
No, totally, and that's that's honestly why my friends go
there too. They said they were just wanted a raw,
raw sports school.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Can you imagine. No, I mean, that's why they feel
one hundred thousands exactly. I mean, it's it's amazing.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
But I was really surprised that a few of my
friends here have children going to Alabama. I never even
would have thought of that when my kids were thinking
about colleges in those years.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Right, I know some to go to TCU and they're
sports management. There's they're all over. But yeah, for that reason,
is that why you came down? Well you were so,
you were at Wyoming.

Speaker 4 (02:25):
I was at Wyoming for two years. I came down
here because I love Arizona. I'm comfortable here. Obviously a
good basketball school.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
So what you you don't have to see the city.
But right now it's about forty degrees.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
Yeah, it's been really cold. I'm going home for Thanksgiving.
I'm scared. I'm not gonna lie. It's so windy. My
door is gonna blow off my car.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Do you have to fly to Denver and drive up
what you can usually do to every time?

Speaker 5 (02:53):
I really?

Speaker 4 (02:54):
Yeah, you can fly into Cheyenne, the main city, but
it's kind of expensive. Okay, so I usually find a
Denver have someone pick me up. That's I'm in the
process of finding someone to get me right now. Actually,
so fingers crossed.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Well, how do you know this because you've done that
trip there? Signor me?

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Yeah, not to Wyoming. No, but you me and I
drove through Wyoming's way many years.

Speaker 5 (03:12):
It's went a couple of hours, Yeah, two hours. I
remember what.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Was I doing?

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Because you know, Wyoming's been here. I don't know how
many times for the Bowl games.

Speaker 5 (03:22):
Yes, I came to that actually.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
Okay, so I was probably on that same flight because
one time I was in Denver and I get on
my flight to Denver coming here and it's filled with
Wyoming fans.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
So they were coming through Denver.

Speaker 5 (03:32):
We're proud Brown and Gold baby.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Oh yeah, yeah, go folks. One time or two times
at least two.

Speaker 5 (03:38):
Years in a row, I think, yeah, yep.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
But more than that overall through the years. Yeah, yeah, Wyoming.
Then they do show up, they drink a lot of beer.

Speaker 5 (03:46):
They do in Heaven. Yep. That's why we drink it there.
That's what they say. There is no beer in Heaven.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
That's funny. That's funny. Well, good for you. You had
a good time. And then now we get to work here.
You're learning the board here and trying to figure out
to help out with with Ray and Juan and whoever
else is in this office. Welcome everybody. We're gonna have
Riggie Gary here in about twelve minutes or so, talk
about today's game. He's gonna be the on the radio

(04:14):
on the other guys. Twelve ninety he's with Brian Jefferies
doing some color work for twelve ninety and at four o'clock,
we don't have anybody. I was trying to get the
opponents to come on, but I couldn't get them or
find them, so we won't have them. And I was
trying to get some UA football guys, former guys. See
how the homecoming went with all the guys back. You know,

(04:36):
not so much about the game, but the guys being back.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
Seemed like they had a pretty good group of people
in town that whole weekend.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
You saw the pictures.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
The pictures were there, and there were all kinds of events.
I mean, it's homecoming, so everybody's doing something. If you're
walking around the campus, you're gonna probably run into somebody
famous that was a football player or basketball player that
is just coming back in.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah, they had a few big parties and then you
see him at the game. You know, did you were
you with me with Kevin Singleton? No, No, he's a good,
good story. He got ill again. Yeah, hard issues, but
do it. Okay, it's hard to imagine those big dudes
just getting in trouble for physically right or you know,
with the illnesses illness is right, right, seem invincible.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
Yeah, I mean he's you know, he's had a lot
interesting life with with his different you know, cancers and
stuff like that.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
But it's good that he's. Yeah, so sort of on
the way back recovering. Right. So you went to the
game and you were not getting a tan like me?
How was that?

Speaker 6 (05:33):
Now?

Speaker 3 (05:34):
It wasn't bad, it was you know, I guess, you know,
I guess I'm just showing my age in terms of
just you know, it was a long day, unfortunately, it
was you know, it was nice and was started at
one thirty.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
So did you stay for the whole thing? I stayed
for the You got out of there about five or so,
at least five, close to five thirty five twenty five maybe. Yeah,
So it was a long day, it.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Really was, you know, and you know, you have to
kind of just kind of go with it. There's really
not much you can do unless you want to get
up and leave. But the commercial breaks are super lengthy,
and whenever there's a replay, you know, they seem to
be doing those a little quicker these days, but still,
there was just one reason after another just kind of.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
Keep this game going. That's funny. Because it's true. I
mean they had a lot of them and a lot
of we'll all say a lot of people. There was
about forty thirty. What did you think of the ground
that so much? I think it was great, But let
me say I agree with you there. However, now that
I've been one of them at this time of year,
I can understand it. Day games in Tucson in September

(06:34):
October out of the question tough, we're in November, and
it was kind of you know, get your waters.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
You know.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
And I heard you guys yesterday talking about it a
little bit too, and about just you know, if they're
going to redo the stadium and what do they put
the capacity at? You know, maybe just keep it no
more than say forty five posts, because that's probably good enough.
I mean, now in the day and age where I
don't know how many people are going, and then we
had we lived through, you know, forty plus year of

(07:00):
the Pac twelve and Pac ten, and we knew who
the big games were going to be. I have no
idea who we're seeing sometimes. I know that school. I
didn't know if Kansas was that good really, you know,
but how many people just kind of get turned off
by the schedule and who the teams are coming in.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
I don't know, could be a problem. Yeah, why did
you go? I don't know.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
I had I had a chance to get tickets, and
whether I knew the weather would be nice.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
I like the day game part of it, had you
had tickets. On the other side, would the sun? Yeah? No,
see that's it.

Speaker 5 (07:33):
You go to the games, yeah occasionally.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Okay, So how does it feel?

Speaker 4 (07:37):
And yeah, it's hot, especially standing with all the students,
Like it's it's hard to stay the whole entire game.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Yeah, sure, it totally makes sense to me. I guess
you know, you have to be there to understand it,
and that's what I was. I'm glad I kind of
feel at least more perspective on it. How was the
humidity down you were in you were in Tuscaloosa.

Speaker 4 (07:56):
Yeah, I was, so it would kind of ebb and flow, know,
like at night it would get really humid, which I
thought was kind of interesting. But it was warm the
whole time in like seventies. That's something I noticed too,
Like nobody leaves the game. Everyone stays the whole entire game.
And I just thought that was so interesting because here,
like halfway through you look over and the whole student

(08:17):
section is like gone.

Speaker 5 (08:18):
You know.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Was there stuff to do in Tuscaloosa after the game?

Speaker 4 (08:21):
Yes, absolutely, lots of LSU fans getting rounded for sure.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Well they were perfect combination.

Speaker 5 (08:29):
No exactly. Yeah, is there.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Wherever they go it's a party, right, Well, it's not
a party now in LSU because no coach in their turmoil. True. Yeah,
so we'll see what happens. But they'll still draw, you know.
Oh yeah, yeah, what was it? Did you remember the
announced crowd? Was it?

Speaker 6 (08:44):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (08:45):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (08:45):
I didn't look at that, but it had to be
a yeah I had.

Speaker 5 (08:48):
It was filled. The whole entire stadium was filled the
whole game.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
So how cool was that? I mean it's you go
in and your party got a good seat in the
student area. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
No, I felt I felt blessed that too, Like I
didn't even have to sit in the nosebleeds. I got
the real, the real fan experience. It was super cool
walking That's like all the huge sorority houses was crazy.
That's another reason a lot of people go there there
Greek like, oh yeah, it's a huge attraction.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
Now, well, didn't they do like an HBO did a
whole sit.

Speaker 4 (09:18):
Yeah, they did a documentary about rush Greek Rush.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Yeah, just in Alabama. Yep, I would have no chance
in that. The best place you've gone to see a
football game?

Speaker 7 (09:29):
Me?

Speaker 3 (09:31):
I mean I did go to Penn State one time.
That was pretty amazing.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
The first the first the first game of when they
got be able to destroy that year.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
That was pretty cool, honestly, because again, you don't see
that in the Pac ten Pack twelve in those years.
I never took it to a game at Washington, and
I was kind of disappointed ever to get to Husky Stadium.
Drove around it a million times, but never never a game.
It was always fun just to go to USC and
Stanford in some of those places, just to kind of
experience the culture of those places and see how fans acted,

(10:00):
and you know, their tailgate parties were pretty elaborate in
some of those some of those spots, but the enthusiasm
nothing like the SEC or the Big Ten as far
as I could tell, What do you think what was
the best place she went to?

Speaker 2 (10:12):
You know, that's a good question, because I covered the
team in the late eighties. Would told me they went
to Oklahoma and I don't remember much of that, which is,
you know whatever, because it came here a year later
member and there was want to beat them here in
that sixty three game. I don't remember the Oklahoma game
to save my life. The best places I went was
Washington of course and maybe Oregon. But other than that,

(10:35):
gave I don't remember anything like that just jumped at
me because they didn't have really big games back then, right, So,
but it was more basketball for me, you know, going
to places l s U, LSU scared the crap out
of me and I wouldn't I'm not even on the court,
just the things they would say, and just the crowd.
It wasn't pretty are wild, it was crazy, you know.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
And just to turn around to basketball, I mean, we
were lucky here that you know, we got Arizona has
one of the best places in the country. People would
come here to go to games, so, you know, there
was really not anywhere else in the conference. Then it
was like, oh, we need to go to I want
to go to Corvallis.

Speaker 2 (11:13):
Yeah yeah, okay, yeah, if you have to go to
corp Allis.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
But Polly, maybe back in the day was somewhere something special,
But Arizona was the you know the team.

Speaker 2 (11:23):
Yeah, you're talking about hoops now, I was just answering.

Speaker 6 (11:25):
Cool.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Yeah, No, Polly was the best. Well two places, Oregon,
of which is my favorite place, and then Polly when
they had the bouncing floor, and it was craziness.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
In Stanford Maples when they had the bouncing floor too, right,
I mean I never got to Matt Court.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
I've been to the other.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
New Arena, but not too It was hilarious.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
It was the best.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
You know, was that where loot? Where did Lou throw
the jacket? Oregon State? Well he did that mad at
both places.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
Yeah, well a couple of times because they got upset
in like eighty nine, eighty nine ninety were on there.
Oh yeah, he threw the jacket. New Mexico Okay, Moose
Stuben on that call and that loss. I'm never coming
back there and they never never did, only if they
were scheduled with the n C double A right. Uh so, yeah,
Eugene and then Maples for me were the best, and

(12:14):
then of course Ucla when both teams were rocking, because
the only UCLA only showed up for Arizona.

Speaker 3 (12:20):
Right, you know those crowds. Yeah, But as far as
me for football. Penn State probably still the top of
the list, and that was it was a horrible game,
but it was a cool experience. We checked in like
on a Thursday night and people were already tailgating in
our Motel six parking lot. You know you should The
room rate was, you know, not a Motel six rate
just because it was a football weekend.

Speaker 8 (12:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
Yeah, and all these you know, all these RVs are
just kind of hanging around and then we just you know,
we did the tour. We toured the campus and got
up was an early game. It was like a noon
kickoff maybe, so we had to be you know, in
place pretty early. But it was it was amazing. It
was like, you know, ninety five thousand, do you remember.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
Going to because you mentioned Motel six and we got
about what maybe five minutes to go to the break
and Mackenzie, this is your future. If you ever do
do this in your in your life, good luck, good luck.
Did you go to uh Douglas for where did you stay?
Where did you stay? What do you think? Motel six?
So Motel six this is in the late eighties, probably

(13:19):
late eighties free oh yeah, uh so we'd go to
the junior college the team would go and practice there
for like a week. Flies h flies, muggy. Not very fun.
But we stayed at Hotel six. It was right next
to a prison, you remember the prison. Yeah, and the border. Yeah,
in the border, and there was not much to do

(13:40):
except for maybe go to a bar and shoe pool. Yeah.
So yeah, no one talks about this part of the job.

Speaker 5 (13:46):
I got a lot to look for.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
But you know what, I remember more about that than
I do about any of the football.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
Oh yeah, yeah, no questions, you know, I mean, there
were moments of good football.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
One thing I did remember is I would practice three
times a day in those years. They would they go
out like you know, seven o'clock, and then they'd take
a little break and go sit in a gym and
cool down, and then you go back out again, and
then they come back again in the afternoon, and a
monsoon would usually roll in about three o'clock.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
It was nuts, right, we gotta go hal fifteen. We're
gonna take a break. Get a hold of Regigiary. He's
doing tonight's game.

Speaker 6 (19:26):
I am hear me?

Speaker 2 (19:27):
Okay, yeah, yeah, I just have to lower the thing
on the d thing. Hey, what's going on? They brought
you out of off the bench. You're working tonight?

Speaker 6 (19:35):
They did. They got They're giving me a home game,
which is nice, which is nice usually you know, working
with Brian Jeffries and Ace there. I've been doing the
road games for the last what it's calling my sixth
year now working color analysts with Brian, and yeah, they
give me a home game. So I'm excited to work
in Michale doing some radio.

Speaker 2 (19:55):
Now along those lines, before Dave comes on here with
Dave Silver, what are you looking forward to seeing?

Speaker 6 (20:03):
Uh, just more of the same, just just just the
progression of this team early in the season here, you know,
you know, to go to Las Vegas the way they did,
and just to show some real toughness, some real quality
there and being obviously you know, defeating national champs, not
getting off to a great start, and just kind of
finding their footing and then playing really well for a

(20:24):
long stretch of time. I was impressive, and so uh
that has you know, everyone excited. They came back played
a you know, a Utah Tech team that is going
to have a good season this year. They had a
lot of quality players, and then with another I thought
quality went for the Cats. So promising start I think
that's reflected and then being you know the number five
team in the nation this week, you know, jumping up

(20:46):
eight places and so there's just a lot of excitement
around this team.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
Hey, Reggie Dave Silver here, how you doing.

Speaker 6 (20:53):
I'm doing good there?

Speaker 2 (20:53):
How are you good?

Speaker 6 (20:54):
Good?

Speaker 2 (20:54):
Good?

Speaker 3 (20:55):
Talk a little bit about the poise some of these
freshmen are showing already, and just a couple of games,
they seem to just kind of come in in this
generation of college basketball. It's just really mature and you know,
not too you know, worried about those spotlight being on
them at this point.

Speaker 2 (21:09):
Are you seeing that as well?

Speaker 9 (21:11):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (21:12):
You know, Tommy and his staff they do, you know,
an excellent job in recruiting and they recruit at a
high level. And so I think what you're seeing with
this freshman class is an experienced freshman class. When you
look at you know, with Coed Peek and Brandon Burry's,
you know, these guys are McDonald, all Americans, they have
Team USA experience, They've been on big stages before, they've
had the spotlight on them. So coming to a fish

(21:34):
bowl like Tucson where you know, you know, Arizona basketball
means something. It you know, it's not something that's overwhelming
for them. When you look at the international players, Yvonne
or Karchenikov, you know, you know he played twenty three
Year League games last year. For people that aren't familiar,
the Year League is like the NBA of Europe, and
so even though he was a limited players, you know,
are you experiencing that Duyne Aristode once again overseas experience,

(21:59):
been in Spain. So these guys are a little bit
more mature, if they're a little more world traveled. I
think that's showing up on the court.

Speaker 2 (22:05):
So I think I had Corey on last week after
the last week's game, and you were obviously a teammate
him at that same time, same class, all that stuff.
You're no stranger to this. I think in nineteen ninety
five ninety six, you guys are unranked, if not ranked low,
and you went in and win the won the NIT,
You'll beat ever sent in the in the final finals

(22:26):
of the n I and then you all of a
sudden went into the top ten. How is that feeling
and how is it How difficult is it to stay there?

Speaker 6 (22:35):
Well, I mean the feeling at the time, you know,
going back to that was my senior year. You know,
they broke I say they like the AP or whoever,
the voters are broke our streak there of being in
the top twenty five, which we had been in for
a record amount of time. And so for us to
not be in the top twenty five by no fault
of our own, just by their opinion what I've been
seeing as we felt disrespected, and so going into n IT,

(22:58):
you know, we just were very motivated bunch, and so
we we beat Long Beach State at home, went on
the road beat to Arkansas to get to Madison Square Garden.
Then you know, beat a good Michigan team and then
you know, played Allen Iverson in the finals and won that.
So to go from un rank to number three, you know,
with vindication because first of all, that's what we rightfully
felt we were as a program because we always had

(23:20):
been there our freshman software and junior years. So it
wasn't any undew pressure that we just felt like we
were back to where kind of we were respected and
where we where we belonged.

Speaker 3 (23:29):
What did you guys, did you lose Miles? Was that
Miles not there that season? I can't remember how that
whole roster.

Speaker 6 (23:34):
Module with us, you know, Joseph Blair, you know, halfway
through the season was no longer with us. That kind
of hurt us a little bit. Obviously, you lose the
player of his his side and statue. He was very
much like a like a Tobaya waka, just kind of
the muscle for our group, and we lost him halfway
through the season. So, you know, Loston and Sweet sixteen
in Kansas by one, but you know, overall, still a

(23:55):
really good season.

Speaker 2 (23:56):
Yeah, and I say this all the time because I've
covered you guess for whatever you gots typically one November, right,
it was rare that you guys didn't win November, and
then you guys had to settle in and then get
ready for March the ninety one. Your freshman year, you go,
I remember this because it was cold in Arkansas. You
went to Arkansas, it was cold. You had a hard
time getting out of the Sports Smith or whatever place

(24:17):
we were at, I can't remember. But then you guys
were the one of the only teams to go seventeen
and one at the time.

Speaker 6 (24:24):
Yeah, you know, freshman year was just a phenomenal year.
You know. Obviously you look back at that team started
five all played in the NBA. I think eight members
of that team played in the NBA. And so we
started talking about daman stotomy Callid Reiz, Chris Mills, rey
O's and that Stoke. You know, tremendous five. All five
played in NBA. I think two of them played over
ten years in the NBA. You know, I was the

(24:45):
sixth man on that team with Joseph Blair and others,
and so just a really quality team. It was just
so unfortunate. You know, we went seventeen and oh in
Pac ten play, We're gonna be the first team to
go ag and and oh, and we lost the last
game the Cow and then eventually lost in the first
seventeen games in a row and then lost to in
a row, and so a little bit of a shock
to the system. It was so unfortunate because you know,

(25:06):
Chris Mills was such a special player, you know, with
the Pack tam Player of the Year, he played for
a long time. I just felt like since we didn't
get that extended run for him, he just wasn't memory.
He hasn't been remembered as much as I would like.

Speaker 2 (25:18):
For him to be.

Speaker 3 (25:19):
You know, kind of brings back memories of those years
with Luke. The way Tommy Lloyd has scheduled this year,
especially where there's you know, some pretty interesting road games
and and home games too. But what do you think
of how this thing has all been put together? And
knowing that, you know, we've got a couple, I don't
want to say gimme's but a couple of easy ish
type games and then you turn around, you got to
go to you know, play UCLA and Yukon back to back.

Speaker 6 (25:42):
Yeah. No, I think Tommy's done an excellent job in
his staff in terms of scheduling. You know, you come
to Arizona to play on big stage, is to play
big games, and and he's giving you a player that
he's giving the Tucson of walckat sang Base that and
that's where we want to see, you know, we want
to see Florida, we want to see Yukon. But as
you missed, very smartly done in terms of it's just
not all heavyweight bouts. That there's going to be some

(26:03):
high majors and then he's gonna you know, come off
and play the mid majors. Not not creampuffs, not easy wins,
but you know, just from a physical standpoint, you know,
you know, looking at those mid majors and then kind
of jumping back up in class again with U. C.
L A and Yukon next week, and so I think
it's really smartly done. Obviously, I love the big games
and you need those because the big twelve play. You know,
I'll argue with anyone that's probably the you know, the

(26:25):
best confident in the nation in my opinion, and there
it is every single night. It's a heavyweight fight. So
I think they've done a really good job with it
in terms of the pace. But you can't overlook anybody
in AU will be a good basketball team tonight. They're
well coached, they run good stuff, and they have some players.
So you don't want to start overlooking people. That's when
they get caught.

Speaker 2 (26:42):
Yeah, yeah, no question, And that's probably the advice you
would give them. I was just gonna say, what kind
of advice would you give them? But that's probably it.

Speaker 6 (26:49):
Yeah, exactly, And they understand that, you know. You know,
Jayden Bradley is such a you know, he's such a
smart high basketball like Hugh senior point guard. You know,
he understands what that stake. You know, Tobay Waka, the
quiet leader on the team. They're just the entire teams.
I think Tommy really has them, you know, attune to
kind of what's going on that? Hey, you do now
have a bulls eye on your back and with that

(27:11):
comes responsibility and we need to play at a high level.
So I expect them to play it well again today.

Speaker 2 (27:15):
Let me ask you, because I asked everybody lest even
yesterday a lot. And I know you got to go,
what's the what's your comp to co? Who do you
think looks like him? Or is there even a comp?

Speaker 6 (27:28):
Yeah, I mean that's a great question. I mean with
that size and athleticism and touching skill level, you know,
I think the one name that comes to mind for me,
and it's Arizona Wildcat is Aaron Gordon, you know. I
mean he's just a little bit smaller, I mean maybe
an inch or two, but just explosive, a guy who
can play vertical above the rim. I think at this
point in their careers, he is more of a skilled

(27:49):
player than Aaron was. Aaron was a little bit more
I think athletic, a little bit more of his boot shrinks.
But keep in mind now, Aaron Gordon scored forty points
on opening night this week, shot ten threes and Mason
excuse me, and so he you know, he developed and
so the body is the same. I think, uh, you know,
Coach is probably a better skill player in terms of
his passing and dribbling. But once again, Coach can also

(28:10):
work on in terms of extending his reigns becoming a
three point shooter. So I when I look at when
I look at Cole, I do think of Aaron and
vice versa.

Speaker 2 (28:17):
I didn't even think of that. But but you're probably right.
And we only seen two games, really two games.

Speaker 6 (28:24):
Yeah, yeah, we don't want to get too excited, you
know what I mean. But you know that the first
two tests in real competition have been have been eye opening.
You know. I think that's why he was named the
National Player of the Week at the National Freshman of
the Week, which is just an astounding accomplishment. And so
you know what he did in in Vegas versus Florida
was dominant. You know, there was that was a front

(28:44):
line many people had a lot of highest respect for.
You know, come to the stronger point of this year's
Florida team and he dismantled him. You know, they couldn't
guard him. You know, he comes back. You think there
might be a freshman fall off in the game versus
Jutah Teck and he comes out with another, you know,
beautiful performance. You know, I think get eighteen points and
three rebounds, three sis and twenty minutes and so he
was afishing and effective again. So he's two for two,

(29:06):
and so I think it's a lot of people are
praising him so much.

Speaker 3 (29:08):
It's kind of nice to get some national coverage with
that ESPN, you know that first game, I don't know,
with TNT whatever it was on.

Speaker 2 (29:15):
It was pretty cool to get that.

Speaker 3 (29:16):
And you did see Arizona kind of in the spotlight
that night and really for the next few days.

Speaker 2 (29:21):
So it doesn't.

Speaker 6 (29:22):
Hurt, it does not know, it's it's good branding.

Speaker 2 (29:27):
Reggie. Thanks, if I were you, I would I know,
I wish I were you, but I wish if I
would go take a nap and get ready for the game.

Speaker 6 (29:33):
I appreciate you. Thanks so shoving me on that.

Speaker 2 (29:35):
All right, Rich Thanks Ben, I was Reggie Geary from
U a obviously former player. Now you a rep in
the in the department.

Speaker 3 (29:43):
Yep, doing some work radio behind the scenes and also
doing the radio.

Speaker 2 (29:48):
It's good. It's a good gig to have, and he
does a great job on both. So I brought up
the situation because you were there. I was there, this
team that no one looks at, and then they win
and everybody looks at and then there's so there's an
added pressure. I don't know if it's I don't know
what it felt by them, but they sure act like
it does eventually, because it's happened maybe five times when

(30:10):
no one believes and then they win and then everyone believes,
and then come March.

Speaker 3 (30:14):
Yeah, well, I mean I think they're going to be
tested when they go to well well there for sure,
But I mean before that, the Yukon game, I think
is going to be a big one in the UCLA.
I'm not sure how that game is going to even
be played out in terms of being at the Clippers Arena.
It's a neutral site, you know, it's a late Friday
night game. I don't know what the atmosphere is going
to be there, Probably more U of A fans and
UCLA fans.

Speaker 2 (30:35):
So it could be a good situation there. But after
that Yukon's it's going to be a tough one, you know. Yeah, Well,
if you remember last year, Arizona looked fine until it
didn't against UCLA. They had the lead, a small lead,
and then they blew it in the last ten minutes. Yeah,
and that was kind of like the beginning of the
end of that little downfall. So they had to recover

(30:55):
from all that, and then they recovered in the big twelve. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (30:57):
Well, I mean they're going to have again they you know,
barn any some type of disaster tonight. They'll have that
third straight win and then we'll see if there's some
momentum going to Los Angeles. And I, like I said
just a second ago, I'm curious about the Yukon game.

Speaker 2 (31:11):
Here, here's where I think it'll benefit. You know, a
twenty point game, whatever point game that Tommy and we
all know that he doesn't go deep into the bench
when it matters that maybe some of the guys, the
other guys right will get some time, even if it's
five minutes or whatever. I'm not saying that will happen,
but we'll see.

Speaker 3 (31:28):
Yeah, it's not five minutes at the end of the game.
I mean maybe five minutes, you know.

Speaker 2 (31:33):
In some time, in some selficant time, like late in
the first half or something. Yeah, somebody needs a blow.
But that never happened. You know, it just doesn't happen
because I think he's already shown his eight or nine
guys that he's gonna go with, and he's gonna stick
with that until he does.

Speaker 3 (31:47):
He wants them to be successful and wants them to
kind of get into the groove and a rhythm themselves
and not just okay, take them out just to get
somebody in for a mind or two. I don't know
if it's worth it to do that. Yeah, we'll see.
We'll see. Uh, let's take a break. Come back on
the other side with this long break.

were very impressed with, give us a call. Let us
know what your experience was. Basketball football doesn't really matter.

(36:35):
Kensey was showing up by going to Alabama over the weekend.
Look at you. Uh, but I wouldn't go as a fan,
you know, I go as and I just watched it.
I went, it's funny because I went this weekend. I
don't know how you are. Did you cheer? Did you cheer?

Speaker 3 (36:48):
I think I got up and cheered on that last
touchdown because it was like, okay, we can go.

Speaker 2 (36:52):
Yeah, that's funny. Kind of waiting for that to happen,
that's funny. There really wasn't a whole lot of there
was a few plays.

Speaker 3 (37:00):
It's kind of interesting, like the the call back long
touchdown by Kansas, like, oh gosh, what's this and then
they bring it back.

Speaker 2 (37:07):
Arizona caught a few breaks, at least three, at least
three I said that yesterday, and they were all in
the three interception attempts or possibilities.

Speaker 1 (37:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (37:16):
Sometimes what it takes, no no question, I.

Speaker 3 (37:18):
Mean, I go, I remember going to the you know,
the Church of Dick Tomy.

Speaker 2 (37:22):
He used to say that all the time.

Speaker 3 (37:23):
Basically it just count comes down to like three or
four plays in football games.

Speaker 2 (37:27):
Is the difference? Yeah, yeah, the three phases, yeah, special teams, penalty, Yeah, no,
it was.

Speaker 5 (37:36):
It was.

Speaker 2 (37:36):
It was an interesting game. They deserved to win and lose,
and they did the good one they want. Yeah, I
mean Kansas was in shock.

Speaker 3 (37:45):
I think they you know, they kind of had the
chip shot field goal miss that even that field goal
again where you said, going, why are they even doing this?
It's only gonna give me a six point lead? And
it was it's still like two and a half, what
was it, fourth and one, fourth and twoish? I can't remember,
yes exactly, but it was one of those really yeah,
I don't.

Speaker 2 (38:03):
Know yeah, well here they are six wins. I had
them going six and six. There you go, it'll probably
win again. Getting excited for the some I'm not going
as all those. I'm not going, Well they go to Vegas,
I'm going going to Vegas. Yeah, I don't want to
go to La go to l A. Yeah, maybe maybe
a driver. Actually I did that twice in my time.

Speaker 3 (38:24):
Eighty six, eighty five. And then North Carolina they played,
they played your they played Carolina in the lowhable in
eighty six played geez, there goes my memory. I don't
know eighty five. I'll think about it here in a second.

(38:47):
I'm sure someone can call give me the answer since
I was right there when I was going on.

Speaker 2 (38:52):
Yeah, you got another guy who possibly might show up
on the show at four seventeen, uh before the break. Yeah,
it all runs together, Jay, I was gonna tell.

Speaker 3 (39:00):
Me, actually this Jay, Georgia, Georgia maybe six or five, five, thirteen, thirteen.

Speaker 2 (39:06):
I've been to the Sun Bowl a few times, but
not for the game, just for a different game. So
we'll see. They have options. That's good.

Speaker 3 (39:14):
I mean, here's they keep winning, and you know they're
gonna have even more options if they can get to
the eight or something like that.

Speaker 2 (39:19):
Okay, So here's my thing. You saw the crowd, and
you saw the loyalty of the fans of that crowd.
Whatever they have. Are they going to go to La Well,
are they going to go to keep them in the West.

Speaker 3 (39:30):
Don't go sending them off to Shreveport like they did
that once, even New Mexico. I mean, if they can
keep them on the West coast someplace at least Arizona
fans because a lot of them haven't seen them play
in person in a couple of years, because they've been.

Speaker 2 (39:42):
Right and that's day twelve. Although drivable, if they go
to Vegas, they'll beat people.

Speaker 3 (39:46):
There were people I remember when they went to that
game in Santa Clara when they had Calil Tates was
I think still that was kind of one of his
last time. I don't remember that game. Which game was
Foster Farms Bowl? Oh yeah, I actually went to that
for some reason. But it was pretty pretty cool. There
some Arizona fans there, okay, some meaning good or bad.

Speaker 2 (40:05):
Probably had thirty thousand people in the forty nine Ers stadium.
Oh yeah, but how many fasts.

Speaker 3 (40:11):
Well, they were playing like Purdue so there wasn't They
didn't have too many fans either.

Speaker 2 (40:15):
Yeah, yeah, Okay, we'll see what I was. If you
want to call five two zero, four, one, six, seventy four, forty,
we'll take your call. Any position, any stadium that you've
been to impressed with or whatever, and or how impressed
were you with this weekend's game with Arizona, with the
people here, you had to be at least some some way.

(40:38):
And Noah ties the record now has been the man.

Speaker 3 (40:44):
I mean really, it seems like he just got here,
I know to me, and he could still play another year,
the year he could break all the records.

Speaker 2 (40:53):
Yeah, where would that put him? We talked about this yesterday.
Do you think that would put him among the quarterbacks
that you have breaks all the records? I got to
be a good top couple, top three or four, top
three or four. Foles, Well, there are Foles and just
maybe quarterback and we kind of compare them, not apples
to apples, right, because Foles did pretty well, but he

(41:14):
was in the pros for a long time. That's what
It's hard to say if he has as a record,
But but would you draft.

Speaker 3 (41:20):
Him, Oh, that's gonna be a tough one with that size.

Speaker 2 (41:24):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (41:25):
Yeah, I mean there's been a few relatively shortish quarterbacks
that have had success, but in this day and age,
I don't know. Kyler Murray was a number one pick
and he's struggling.

Speaker 2 (41:36):
Yeah, but that's not a surprise to you, not to me. Yeah,
just so many things going on there. And then the Cardinals,
it's horrible. Yeah, I don't want to talk about them.

Speaker 18 (41:46):
Do we have to?

Speaker 2 (41:48):
I've lived through how many years of the Cardinals?

Speaker 6 (41:50):
How many?

Speaker 2 (41:50):
But you're not a cardinal.

Speaker 3 (41:51):
Well, I mean kind of had to be if you
lived here, just to I mean, they were on the
they were back in the day when that's all you
would get. Sometimes that you'd get one or two games
on a Sunday and you have to sit there and
watch them.

Speaker 2 (42:05):
Don't make me. Did you ever cover them? No? No,
I did them. Never did No. I did the first
first story when they moved here in nineteen eighty eight,
when they decided we were still on deadline at the Citizen,
when they moved to here, moved to Phoenix, and they
called them the Phoenix Cardinals. Blah blah blah, nineteen eighty eight.
It's been that long, what thirty seven years? Yeah, I

(42:26):
mean we did go. We but yeah, you went to games.
I'm sure you guys did.

Speaker 3 (42:30):
We did, and we had we had some kind of
a maybe we had the Coaches Show on our on
our station down here, so we had some you know,
access to getting there and you know, we were the
only Tucson TV station maybe that was able to get
certain interviews. Didn't then Parker do that show? That was
even later. That was later, but early, very early on

(42:50):
we had, you know, the Buddy Ryan Show, things like
that that would air like before Monday night football in
those years.

Speaker 2 (42:56):
I don't even know.

Speaker 3 (42:57):
I know they're on here in Tucson someplace. Kold they're here,
and they're here on this show again. You guys are
the games?

Speaker 2 (43:04):
Yeah, the games? Yeah, you guys, what do you mean
you guys?

Speaker 3 (43:07):
You are your station guys. In fact, I even heard it.
Where was I going? You weren't when they were on
Monday night last week?

Speaker 2 (43:14):
We were in Vegas. Yeah, they were playing that.

Speaker 3 (43:16):
Sorry, I was driving around going all I know, Steve's
not doing a show.

Speaker 2 (43:21):
What's on fourteen fifteen when they're doing the cars? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
good for them, Good for them. So, what are your
impressions of the basketball team so far? Good? I mean
I was talking to Reggie.

Speaker 3 (43:33):
I just I just I'm always amazed when the freshmen
come in and they're just so kind of ready to go,
and I think about his I was going to you know,
I was going to follow up with him like, well,
what were you feeling really when you first got here?

Speaker 1 (43:45):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (43:45):
Yeah, we really as cool as a cucumber. I mean,
you had some guys ahead of you, but these guys
come in and it's like, I'm no big deal. I'm
gonna go out there and play in front of twenty
thousand fans and let's just go.

Speaker 2 (43:56):
I'm ready for it. Kenzy, how are they on the cams?

Speaker 5 (44:01):
Like the hype surrounding basketball.

Speaker 2 (44:03):
Yeah, the hype and then if you do see the
dudes on the campus.

Speaker 4 (44:06):
Yeah, yeah, I think there's a lot, especially like Bryce
James has brought a lot of you know, everyone's excited.

Speaker 2 (44:12):
About him, but he's not gonna play no.

Speaker 4 (44:14):
Yeah, and a lot of people don't know that. They
just hear the name and they get excited.

Speaker 2 (44:19):
Everyone's we want.

Speaker 5 (44:22):
I know exactly.

Speaker 4 (44:23):
So I think there's a lot of hype surrounding it.
I I've seen a couple of them around campus. I've
seen co a couple of times.

Speaker 5 (44:30):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (44:31):
They're just they're big guys. That's that's how you know.
They're huge, really tall.

Speaker 2 (44:38):
Don't you play for the basketball team. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (44:40):
I think everyone's just waiting for uh, what's his name,
Bryce's dad to show up to be.

Speaker 2 (44:47):
He's got to come, I would I think he's.

Speaker 3 (44:49):
Going to be on the road, not here, because maybe
even in this l A game next week.

Speaker 2 (44:53):
Yeah, yeah, because he's still not playing, is he no,
So you know, maybe he shows up here. Hold on,
we got to call let me take this car. Ah, Well,
you're on the airline the ball who says.

Speaker 6 (45:04):
Hey, buddy, it's ric.

Speaker 18 (45:07):
I'm good, thank you. It's trying to stay out of
my way.

Speaker 6 (45:13):
Stadiums, the Cotton Bowls, the Red River Rivalry.

Speaker 2 (45:17):
Have you been there? Have you gone to that game?

Speaker 6 (45:22):
Yeah? Twice?

Speaker 18 (45:23):
And it is a show all into itself when you
get in there during the game, after the game. Uh,
it's just unbelievable and likely we mentioned you and I
mentioned earlier.

Speaker 6 (45:38):
L s U.

Speaker 18 (45:38):
You know gator bait or tiger tiger bait. Tiger bait,
Uh Michigan Stadium is unbelievable. It's just it's just there's
just so many people. It's just it's mind boggling. There's
so many people in that stadium.

Speaker 2 (45:56):
You're a Detroit guy, right.

Speaker 18 (45:59):
My dad's family is all from Detroit, and I have
some family and friends back there still so But but
I'll tell you the craziest stadium my favorite one too.
You know, almost as U.

Speaker 6 (46:12):
You know how they.

Speaker 18 (46:13):
Always stick the U of a fans way up at
the top level. Well, we had a couple of crazy
ones in our neighborhood right there, and one guy almost
pushed me down the stairs, and I'm thinking, this is nuts.

Speaker 6 (46:28):
I don't need to be doing.

Speaker 2 (46:30):
And didn't go back. You probably knows your last.

Speaker 18 (46:32):
Time downe that was my last time back. I've never
been back. And you know, those people just get crazy.
I mean, some of our fans get outrageous, but ASU
fans are the worst I've ever been around. They're just
downright disrespectful. Not all of them, obviously, but the younger,
younger people, and then they start drinking. It's just like

(46:55):
I'm out of here. But anyway, I enjoyed the show.
You all your listeners day oh.

Speaker 2 (47:03):
Yes, and yeah, appreciate thanks, thanks, I appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (47:08):
Yeah, sometimes walking through the parking lot at sun Devil
Stadium was a danger and you didn't want to show
where you were from. I mean, I experienced it a
few times. I'm not anything like terrible, but you could
get jeered going to the game, going from your car
through the lot to the stadium.

Speaker 2 (47:25):
Sometimes you know where are you from?

Speaker 3 (47:26):
If you're holding like a microphone that looks like it's
not from Phoenix, you know there would be that, But
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (47:34):
I didn't have to sit in the stands. Yeah, put
it that way. No, No, even we took too long
doing the interviews where everybody was already filed out by
the time we got out. Yeah, you know that's a
good thing. It was one of the tough places, and
noting it was tough, it was kind of scary in
a maybe rumor or reputational way. Colseum, Yeah, in LA
you know you've heard the stories. Not too bad, but

(47:56):
it never affected me. Yeah, I don't know. Maybe there's
just something about going in there, in the history of
the place. I sometimes you just like, look around, I
can't believe I'm standing here. You know, with all the
Olympics and all the different events that have been in
that place, you get blown away. But even Sun Devil basketball,
sometimes it was a little rough. I don't know where
you would sit, but sometimes we were like right by
the student section, and you know, we would hear everything

(48:17):
because they would put the students right by the bench,
Arizona's bench, if I remember. Yeah, so the media seats were.

Speaker 3 (48:23):
Sometimes literally right right in front of them, yes, and
you'd hear everything.

Speaker 2 (48:27):
Yeah, But the best time was when they were kicking
Arizona's kicking the crap out of them, and they were
giving Luke grief and he just pointed and here you
up by what twenty five? Yeah, he had never done
never done that. He did it that day. I just
needed to tell him we were killing him.

Speaker 3 (48:44):
Because he's not supposed to be listening to that stuff, right,
But he would and he would gesture every once in
a while and say that, but right.

Speaker 2 (48:51):
It's pretty fun. Okay, we got about it two minutes,
two minutes, and we'll take a break in and we're
not going to do any breaking news unless do you
have breaking news, probably.

Speaker 5 (49:00):
But we'll talk about a little bit.

Speaker 2 (49:01):
Okay, if you want to talk about that week. Give
us some stuff. Yeah, you'll come on this side. We'll
come on this side of the studio. We'll do that
for whatever you have and animal kind of jibbor jebber
for the next hour. Maybe take some more calls because
I don't think anybody's gonna come on for seventeen anything else,
anything else. Travis Hunter, the Heisman Trophy winner. Is he

(49:25):
out out for the year? The injured?

Speaker 3 (49:27):
Yeah, a couple in practice, I think, wasn't it practice?
It was in practice practice. He's done, so that's kind
of messes up there. Number one pick, and you know,
hopefully he'll be ready to go next year.

Speaker 2 (49:39):
There's a lot of stuff going on with every sports world,
all this money being paid or not being paid to coaches,
Kelly fighting for him for his fifty four million last
night's game. Did you see last night's game? Gosh, I did.
I saw a lot of it.

Speaker 3 (49:54):
It was another difficult watch and sad because those were
two of the marquee teams in the league.

Speaker 2 (50:00):
Yeah, well, you've remember two weeks in everyone had wal
Green Bay. They're gonna be tough, They're going to win
the Super Bowl. That's why I don't pay attention to
win over Florida or a win over whatever, because it's
way too early. You know, you have a good game, Okay,
you had a good game. You don't, yeah, without question, Okay,
we have I don't know, maybe a minute. I'm just

(50:23):
trying to calculate the clock. Yeah, so many, so many
things going on out there. You know, I don't want
to in fringe on your breaking new stuff. Well we
can make up stuff now.

Speaker 3 (50:36):
I was talking about earlier that you know, Caitlin Clark,
the great basketball player, is gonna play on the LPGA
event that Anica Sorenstam hosts this weekend. So there's something
for her to do since she hasn't played much basketball
in the last few months. And you know, she'll bring
some eyeballs to that for sure, just the novelty of that.

Speaker 5 (50:55):
I've heard she's a pretty good golfer.

Speaker 3 (50:56):
Us. Yeah, I'm sure she's got to be at least
able to you know, not embarrassed herself.

Speaker 2 (51:03):
Okay, Well, let's take a break and come back with
some breaking news.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
