Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services in
sure your most prized possessions.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Hey, good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to Eye on the Ball
here on Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. In
today with me is Blake Eager. I either need to
change your name to less than eager or something.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Why do you say that more than late or something
like that. It's the Really, I go out of my
way every time I get a chance to go see
you guys. That seems pretty eager to me, right, I
just don't like coming on your shore that much.
Speaker 4 (00:40):
But here he is Blake. Yeah, that's been my nickname
my whole life. So that makes told us? Has it?
Are you related? I should have joined the mill? Oh okay,
so starts every day. I think it was three fifteen.
I thought that was early.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
We got Juan behind the scenes over there on the
other side of them, like cool. Hey, uh, did you
enjoyed the game last night? Be honest, I thought they
played pretty slowly. Did you enjoy the game?
Speaker 4 (01:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:06):
But I mean I did enjoy the game, but it
was great to see aristote like step up and you know,
answer the question you've had all year. Where is that
perimeter shooting? Can you see my story? I didn't know it,
and that's kind of what it was. Yeah, I'm still
I don't know if one is, but we're still skeptical.
Speaker 5 (01:23):
I think we're very skeptical on this team shot outside shooting.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
I think the way Burys looked against Utah Tech, the
way Aristote looked like last night at del Orso. I
think you're gonna get some scoring from the perimeter. No, no, no,
we're talking long distance proved. Yeah, you're talking three point
yeah yeah, yeah, so so I I you know, is
it going to be five to seven threes every game?
Speaker 4 (01:47):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Yeah, it's gonna be a question if a shooting twenty something. Yeah,
and that's not gonna be their game. You know, tell
me wants to get to the line, they're gonna drive.
I just thought last night they didn't take care of
the ball very well exactly.
Speaker 6 (01:58):
That was another meat takeaway for you.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
Know, you you beat NAU by that margin. You should
beat NAU by that margin with the talent you have
on the floor. It's like a little concerning going to
U C.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
L A. Just being able to control the offense through
and through.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Did you have a Washington General team that you pitched
against it and it was like, okay, here I am.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
You always beat them? Uh yeah, okay probably. Yeah, Arizona
has NAU and Utah Tech. Yeah, that's you're right, they're
not that's not a Florida, that's not that's not a UCLA.
That's you know what I'm saying. Okay, great, great, Yeah,
but this is not that. Yeah, I mean those teams
are the teams that I would just go forcing fastball
and let it eat, like I'm not gonna throw anything
else exactly, you know, exactly if they get a dink
(02:37):
your head and I've got a guy on second, maybe
I'll throw a breaking ball. But realistically, I'm not even
going to show you my change.
Speaker 4 (02:43):
So you know exactly what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Yeah, Utah Tech great and you great, But yeah, those
aren't the guys you have to worry about.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
I thought I did like seeing Mo play with a
little bit more aggression last night. I think that's needed
that too, you know, I mean, a walk is going
to be your kind of uh steady line point, and
I think he was last night for the most part one.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Your thoughts on that, because we talked about that before
he got here.
Speaker 5 (03:07):
Yes, it's nice Cmo be that aggressive and kind of
hunt his shot, But it's Nau. That's that's the big
issue here. It's Nau and you're still turning the ball
over fourteen times. You're still shooting eleven for twenty six.
You take away Aristo, that's five or seventeen. It's it's concerning.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Yeah, but you were talking more about Crevas and o
Waka oh yeah, just together.
Speaker 5 (03:30):
It seem that they had played a little bit more
together last night than they had in the three games.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
That they definitely played. I think there was a purpose
to that too. And did it look horrible No, I
think they were. They were caught a couple of times
out of position because they were both trying to play
the five right, so they didn't know where the other
person was at times, and that's the concern. Well, you've
got to have them out there and do it right. Yeah,
I mean that's what we're saying. Yeah, that's what those
of these games before, and so it just looks gradually
better and better. It's something to look out for. Could
(03:58):
possibly be something that Tommy Lloyd strike's gold with or
something that you might just have to abandon. No, this
is three games in, right, So this is what these
games are for.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
You experiment with that. See how much time you can go.
He picked up two fouls early, so you couldn't have
to you couldn't continue with it, right, And he talked
a little about that just getting foul in foul trouble.
There was something else. Oh okay, I'm gonna rant, and
so were you?
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Probably okay, So we we know the James situation, the Brice.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
We've known it for months. He's coming to school here
to kind of be just a student, general student and
a basketball player student athlete.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
What's the big deal?
Speaker 7 (04:38):
One?
Speaker 6 (04:38):
I don't know. I really don't know.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Outrage of the potential of him red shirting and not playing,
you man, Yeah, outrage in what sense for you that
you hear the noise? I mean, you're if you're looking
at it from a social media standpoint, people are like,
I don't understand how he's not in the game. I
saw one to where actually Richard Jefferson like posted back,
like you have no idea.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
What you're talking about.
Speaker 8 (04:57):
That's exactly that's what we're.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Talking about right, Like Richard Jefferson was like you, I
don't know who you are, but you have no clue.
It was just so funny to see him randomly. That's
and that's what we're talking about.
Speaker 5 (05:07):
Tell me you haven't watched basketball without telling you you
haven't watched basketball.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
And then and I think you and I maybe had
this conversation, but those conversations between Lloyd and the James
family happened. I think I think Lloyd's a straight shooter.
I think he probably went to that house saying, like,
there's the opportunities we're going to have are to become
a national champion. We want to be a national championship
contender at this point. I don't know if Bryce fits
(05:31):
into that mold, right, but we would.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
Love to have him.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
And if you look at my track record on how
we've developed players, this is probably a perfect landing spot
for him. You sound exactly how I think he would
have sounded in that living room.
Speaker 6 (05:43):
Yeah, say a lot of for the people in the back, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
I mean it's true, though, I mean you've got to
give respect there.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
And I think it's the right call, without question. If
he's not ready to play right now, and the students.
Either they're joking or they're serious. If they're shut up, yeah,
because they do.
Speaker 5 (06:00):
Want they do genuinely want to see him play. Sure,
because of the last name on the back of.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
His jersey, of course they're gonna chant that all year
and it won't matter a thing.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
But if they do their job, you look at him
for next year, and there's a potential he's a sixth
man or seventh man. I mean, that's a high potential.
But still, I mean I think there's a high ceiling
with him. He's just young. I mean, he has a
lot to he still has a lot to work. There's
no shame in whatever's happening.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Yeah, him and my bill both Our problem was it's
gonna continue. Well, what's the three or four stories I
saw on the internet? Nothing local with that, But it
looks like he's gonna do this. Apparently, No, he's gonna
do that.
Speaker 8 (06:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
I think you get ahead of it if you can
by him coming on and saying this was a conversation
that we both agreed on for my future. It might
continue playing future and career like, it's a development thing
for me as well. Here's that issue you're talking about
Bryce coming out Yeah, that ain't happening because that thing.
We've talked to him for the last time. Yeah, because
there's no purpose to talk to him outside of that.
Speaker 5 (06:58):
Yeah, and Tommy will have the definitive answer, no, no, no, we're.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Still you think now looking forward to next year, do
you think that he stays at you of ade?
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Yeah, he should. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Well if the purpose is to develop, yeah, and be
part of the student body and become you know, less
lime light.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
Yeah. Yeah, perfect, because in two three years he's going
to be that guy.
Speaker 5 (07:21):
And also if Tommy develops him the way he usually
develops players, he's going to be a fan favorite by
far and away.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
I could see that for sure. Yeah, and to learn
under guys like Bradley. You don't get that very often, right,
a senior that controls the court and has vision.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
I'll give you this. Nelson is not going to see
much time either.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
I know.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
You have to give him this situation with with the
Bury's and Bradley. So you're thinking the fourth guy, third,
fourth guy, fifth guy, and James going to play time.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
I know.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
And it's crazy if you really put that in perspective.
That's what a three year starter at Harvard, right, that's
not going to be able to step on the court
here in Tucson, much right, right, much right? So, I
mean City is the same way. I'm a little surprised
that they didn't maybe go the the red shirt Cities City.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Okay, so yeah, well they only he's going to play eight.
He meant he mentioned that last night. It's just we've
paid big shock, right, he plays eight. I know he
plays eight. Let's it's a big blowout. You'll get nine,
maybe ten.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
I always you know, and I'm not trying to be
controversial at all, but I always think that Evan should
be a guy that gets five minutes a game, right
at some point in the mix there, because he's I
think he has a good head on his shoulders. It's
a it's a calming it's a calming perspective from a
point guard standpoint who's done it and over and over again.
But what the hell do I know?
Speaker 4 (08:42):
Okay, it's neither here.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
I think nine gives you a different perspective. And maybe
that's a little bit too deep for Tommy, but I
think throughout the course of the season, when you're talking
about a rest fact factor, that that gives your guards
an extra just an extra step.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
If he played five minutes a game, you'd be okay,
that makes sense.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
Five to eight minutes a game throughout the course of
the year.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
That just gives your guards a little bit more time
direct and down the road.
Speaker 5 (09:08):
If you get into a game he's got a very
physical big twelve game where Bradley and Burry's might get
into some foul trouble. You have that almost third string
quarterback quote unquote or.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
Having ready, but he gets injured.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
I'll bet you five bucks that he at the end
of the year he averages five minutes or more.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
Good. Yeah, I'm not going to take that bet.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
No, no, but five minutes is a lot of time,
but not really a lot of time, No, ninth tenth guy.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
Yeah, in the next month or so, he'll he'll get some.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
I mean, outside of Auburn, he's probably gonna play ten
eight to ten minutes at least a game, right, sole'd assume, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
So we'll see.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
I mean, it's a nice eight man roster with these guys,
with the possibility of getting some of the guys just
sometime whatever. But Brough but but Bryce will be not
one of them.
Speaker 5 (09:54):
One thing I've been wanting to talk about and I
just haven't and because I wanted to kind of get
a better shamp size from this dude. Anthony del Orso
has improved so much. In my opinion, I.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
Would agree with you on the defensive stand. On the
defensive side of the ball, he doesn't feel like he's
I mean, we haven't again, I know what you're gonna say,
we haven't seen any bruising teams yet outside of Florida.
But I mean, just staying with his man, recovering, being active,
vocal leadership on the floor, I would agree with you.
Speaker 5 (10:22):
I also just think he's more confident with his shot
and shot he puts up.
Speaker 6 (10:26):
It's confident.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
It's not like last year where it's like, oh, I'm
gonna shoot because people think I'm a shooter.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (10:31):
No, I'm gonna shoot this because I'm gonna make it.
That's what a mindset this year. And he doesn't look
lost out there. I feel like last year, true, he
was just kind of like, oh, there's a fifth guy
for Arizona.
Speaker 6 (10:41):
Yeah, looks lost.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
Let's also throw this out there, they had a guy
who was a ballhawk in Caleb, so the ball eventually
found his place and the place was Caleb right, and
then you had the other guys wondering if I went
to see the ball and what shot am I going
to take?
Speaker 2 (10:56):
And he was he was part of that. Yeah, you
don't get what you can get if you're open. And
because you had this guy out there and KJKJ, so
now he's one of the top two or three options
on the perimeter. Now he doesn't have to worry about
the other guy. That makes sense.
Speaker 4 (11:12):
If you're the.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
Number two starter, guess what you are, it's the number
two starter. Are you saying that there's maybe more of
a team aspect to this team from a ball shooting,
from a shooting perspective.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
The ball and in Tommy's offense, the ball finds it's open,
then kind of like the Golden State Warriors, then move
around with if you open, take the shot.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
If you're not, you pass it until you find the
guy I want to Can I go back to really
quick what one talked about with Mo. When you're talking
about Mo and finding that shot, and they did it.
He did it against NAU. He had I think he
had five or five looks against Florida that were similar
to the shots that he had last night that just
didn't fall, I think, or maybe six. I think when
that becomes three of those drop, you're seeing maybe not
(11:52):
a double doubles machine, but a guy that's going to
be a twelve eight guy or twelve seven or fourteen
to seven guy.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
Almost on a game to game basis.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
This is a second that he is who he is
right and he finishes let's say.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Eight points a game, seven, eight rebounds a game, two
or three block shots?
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Are you good with that? Before I answer that? The
only reason and there's no wrong answer, no, and I
would say yes. The only reason why I hesitate on that.
The only reason why is because if you're watching when
Vassar is doing right now with you and C and
I'm going is he would he have been a better option?
Speaker 4 (12:27):
We know we know he would have.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
I've said that he's one of the better players in
the last ten years.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Here's a problem. He was never gonna stay. But I
thought you were gonna say yes. If a WAKA produces
twelve points a game and eight rebounds a game, and
together that's whatever it's going to be. Twenty points, twenty rebounds,
that's a heck of a front court.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
That's a front court and that's pretty much one dude.
That's Cola and Coob throwing that. Then you're going, well,
that's a top five front court. I've just considered him
as one person. Yeah with those with that lines, that's.
Speaker 6 (12:59):
That's twenty two points and sixteen rebounds, right.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
Yeah from your five? Won't you take every day? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Under every day And that's what this is going to be.
And it's what's great about them is they're versatile against
different lineups, right because a waka if a waka struggles, struggles,
moke and creep in there and take over and vice versa.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
And it's a curveball fastball. Yeah, they're two different players. Yeah, Okay,
let's go. We're gonna have Brad Alice now and then

apologies because I was in the stands. I was not
in the you know, luxury box with the media it

I should have put sun tent or any sunscreen on.
How are you not putting sunscreen?

Speaker 4 (19:11):
Leave me alone? No, No, I'm being honest. So you're

Speaker 4 (19:25):
You're good.
Speaker 2 (19:25):
No, it was hot for the halftime, said God in wonder.
Everybody wants to leave because I want to leave, But
I stuck it out once the sun went down. But
it was beautiful. It was fantastic, so I stayed for
the fourth quarter. They played well enough to win, and
they won. And now you feel that the monkey's off Brend's.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
It was a great win. I don't care what you say.
The article you wrote was spot on. I thought it
was great when you did the grades. Yeah, wait, you
read him or not. I didn't read you today.
Speaker 1 (19:52):

live with crippling anxiety and stress and depression.
Speaker 4 (20:07):
I don't need to. This is yeah, you will get
it here. I appreciate your type here. Now. They played,
They played well enough to win, and then yeah, that's
what you want. You want to leave that.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
And we talked about you want a competitive team on
the team or on the field that gives you a
chance to win. And I thought they did that right.
Speaker 4 (20:21):
So I was the crowd.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
It was forty one, right, that's what announced I know,
but I thought it was thirty seven ish, maybe thirty five.
Speaker 5 (20:29):
It's I think it's only that's generous, thirty five. I
was gonna say thirty three.
Speaker 3 (20:34):
Okay, I mean people were by the time the fourth
quarter started. I mean people were at tailgate, A lot
of people. Yeah, I think, So what did you go?
It was a lot of people there, but a lot
of people go and they don't go to the game.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
No, I understand that too. Yeah, it was it was
a lot of people. It was a fast up atmosphere.
You'd hope they'd stay.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
But I get it that that west of the east
side of the thing is get gets very hot. The
west side was fantastic. Fucking man, it is what it is.
And I wouldn't say just had a nuts sat down
detracting people from going because it's eighty three degrees outside.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
Hey, I'm apologying for me being a jerk saying that
all these things. But September October, Holy holy yeah, if
it's not after seven or five o'clock.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
Yeah, yeah, maybe, I don't know. There's a lot more
solved to this now that I figure. You know, there's
how do you solve that. You can't build a dome.
You want to put a roof on it, it put something?
Speaker 4 (21:26):
Yeah, I don't know. I mean, not buy a bigger hat. No,
it's tough.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
And the thing about it a fan in the other
places they don't care. They don't care. But it's more
than just the heat and all that stuff.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
Yeah, I know, we're I mean, I just wrapping my
head around us complaining about eighty three degree weather right
now when you've got ninety five degree plus one hundred
percent humidity in the South and they sell out seventy
five to one hundred and twenty five thousand seed arenas
in stadiums.
Speaker 6 (21:52):
That's shoulder to shoulder too.
Speaker 4 (21:53):
I shoulder to shoulder, baby, those are stinky.
Speaker 5 (21:56):
Well my thing is too, Like yeah, sure it's hot,
but this is one day. Yes, it's it's four hours. Yeah,
that's all you gotta do.
Speaker 4 (22:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
Well have you met have you met Kenzie my newer intern?
Speaker 4 (22:10):
I haven't every time I come in that she's supposed
to be here.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
Yeah, yeah, no, she was supposed today, she's not this week.
So she went to Alabama LSU and she said, Okay,
now I get.
Speaker 4 (22:18):
It, you know, Yeah, I told you.
Speaker 3 (22:20):
I was having this conversation with the chiropractor my wife
goes to and he's like, I would have to disagree
with you. I think the tailgated atmosphere is second to
none at u of A. And I was like, have
you ever been to it?
Speaker 4 (22:31):
Like are you?
Speaker 3 (22:32):
Are you out of your mind? Like yeah, yeah, that's so.
Phila Wren is very good looking. Have you ever seen
keel Welch?
Speaker 8 (22:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (22:38):
Yeah, okay, and Sophia is in like my top three
of them. Okay, but have you ever seen still in
my top three?
Speaker 4 (22:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (22:47):
So the thing we're talking about with Brennan.
Speaker 5 (22:49):
He's built his the type of team he wants to
have a program he's looking to build here the foundations
right that that's another thing that's just we got to
start somewhere to start. It should have been this season,
maybe it will be next season. But the norm right
now for attendance at Arizona Stadium is that it'll be
(23:10):
a decent showing to begin and then that stadium is
emptied by the fourth quarter. Usually even if a good
team like Kansas comes into town.
Speaker 4 (23:19):
That's city game exactly.
Speaker 5 (23:21):
If it's a good if there's just having a good season,
no one, no one really cares. So it's that solution
of finding people to care and getting the people that
don't care to care concert after the game, concert oh
oh was there one? Or try to keep people there
(23:42):
all the time. It depends on who. Well, no, so
that people if you're talking about right after, and then
there's an issue there because people are gonna want to
leave early to get a line, to get good seaton,
to get a good view of that concert.
Speaker 4 (23:55):
The concert happens on the football field.
Speaker 3 (23:59):
I'm not sure that was all right for that, they're
gonna stay. Just tell me too, to set up and
bub guys. You're you're saying there's problems. I'm throwing out solutions.
You're yelling at you for the solutions, saying it's a
right solution. I'm just saying solutions. Son, you haven't seen me.
You haven't seen me. Yell at your son. Hello, you're
on the air. Is this Brad?
Speaker 16 (24:18):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (24:19):
Brad? How are you?
Speaker 2 (24:21):
I'm okay, We're gonna make you run about five laps.
That's all for being a little leaked.
Speaker 16 (24:25):
Oh sorry about that.
Speaker 2 (24:27):
Listen, No, you're good, you're good. Uh, let's go with basketball,
because it's just from last night. What are your thoughts
on last night?
Speaker 16 (24:33):
Okay, okay, sound good.
Speaker 4 (24:36):
We're on the air. Go ahead, Yeah, you're let's go.
Speaker 17 (24:41):
Okay, Sorry about that. I think the pause and everything,
you know, I thought they did what they needed to
do obviously, you know, kind of.
Speaker 16 (24:48):
Toyed with them a little bit.
Speaker 17 (24:49):
Then what seemed like that thirty five point lead never
never changed. They never went up to forty, never went
down back down like twenty eight.
Speaker 16 (24:56):
So the big guys did what they were.
Speaker 17 (24:58):
Supposed to do against smaller, less athletic guys. You know,
Bradley looked really good again. Aristode did things we've never
seen them do, which is fantastic.
Speaker 18 (25:10):
You know, I'd like to have seen a little bit.
Speaker 17 (25:11):
More out of Bury's and Yvonne, But other than that,
I thought Arizona just looked like what they should, the
much better team that just exerted their will.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
So I was watching the game, obviously, and I was
sitting next to share when i ariostoed his third or
fourth three pointer, and I turned to says, did you
expect did he do this? Did you do anything about this?
And he says no, So where did this shooting come
from all of a sudden?
Speaker 17 (25:35):
You know, you hope it's a product of hard work
and good coaching and it's a sign of things to come.
Speaker 16 (25:41):
And maybe not going six for nine, I mean.
Speaker 8 (25:43):
That's that's Salim numbers.
Speaker 15 (25:46):
But if he can be a guy who.
Speaker 17 (25:47):
Can hit a reliable thirty five from behind the arc
while still being wildly athletic and long, and that's just
gonna pay dividends because to me, the big question still
is not talent at the wing, but consistency at the wing.
Speaker 16 (26:03):
You know, we saw Yvanna have the great game against Florida,
and he's.
Speaker 17 (26:06):
Kind of had two back to back Mets games against
symperior competition. Del Orso is limited athletically. He's kind of
a one dimensional player. Even Burry's is going to be
up and down because he's a freshman, you know, who
doesn't have that great pure shot. So anything you get
out of one of those guys and then you ride
in the hot.
Speaker 16 (26:26):
Hand, and I think that's important for Arizona.
Speaker 17 (26:28):
So if he can just be a good outside shooter,
that's bonus. That's plus because you know, he was thought
to be this freak athlete who was going to get
it done with his balance and his length and his athleticism.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
Yeah, it's kind of strange. We really haven't seen that
piece out of Aristote yet. So seeing last night, like
you're saying, Brad, is that if he can do that
create that thought process and the and the visitors or
another team's mind, that opens up the lane. I'd like
to see him attack the basket a little bit more,
or to see how much he can get out of
him because he is a hot guy.
Speaker 4 (27:03):
Do you think that.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
Do you think the last two performances out of Yvonne
put any doubt in Tommy's mind about keeping him in
the starting lineup.
Speaker 15 (27:13):
I think Tommy and he's a lot of like Lude.
Speaker 18 (27:15):
I don't think he cares who starts to do finishes.
Speaker 16 (27:17):
Yeah, you know, he does other things.
Speaker 17 (27:19):
I think he led the team in assists last night.
Speaker 16 (27:21):
He got a couple of rebounds.
Speaker 15 (27:23):
He's a rugged guy.
Speaker 17 (27:25):
I have a feeling you will see three different guys
started at a small board position at some point this season.
Speaker 16 (27:32):
And so, whether you know Yvonne loses his.
Speaker 17 (27:35):
Grip a little bit, you know, I don't know what
Tommy's magic stat is. In practice with lud it was rebounding.
The best rebounder got the start, but the best player
got the finish.
Speaker 18 (27:45):
And then so we'll see what Tommy decides to do.
Speaker 16 (27:48):
But it would not shock me if.
Speaker 17 (27:49):
He continued to go with Yvonne, maybe until they lose,
because he seems to be a guy who kind of
plays numbers like that, seems to write hot hands, doesn't
like to break things when not broken, or tinker. So
my guess is you'll just see a difference in minutes.
Speaker 18 (28:04):
But ivan O pabably continue.
Speaker 17 (28:05):
To start unless he just puts in an absolute clunker.
You know, not only does he not score, but he
doesn't grab rebounds. He commits silly fowls things like that.
Speaker 4 (28:15):
So I think that's a good point.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
I don't know if he changes like last remember he
went to the uh the guys coming off the bench
and and and then they kind of gave him a
boost and blah blah blah. I think that he's fine
with the guys coming off the bench the way they're
coming out the bench. If Krevis stays in and out
of foul trouble whatever, he's got the other guy that's,
you know, just as capable. So we'll see, we'll see
what happens.
Speaker 8 (28:34):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (28:34):
This weekend they pay Ucla.
Speaker 2 (28:36):
I think they're gonna I know they're gonna have a
tougher test, and it's a different it's a change up.
The change up's coming now because they've seen these other schools,
Florida specifically, but Ucla is a different thing. They're a
bruising there's a bruising, slow it down type. That's your curveball,
I mean. And it's essentially a home game for them too, essentially. Yeah,
your thoughts on that game, I don't.
Speaker 17 (28:58):
My guess is it's gonna look more like a tournament
game and it's going to be small sections of fans.
I don't know how many, because I saw there were
a lot of tickets available. It's not like playing at Poly.
But you're absolutely right, this is another style, something they
haven't seen, something that is not messly easy to prepare for.
Right when you're Arizona, it's easy to prepare for athleticism,
(29:21):
So it's kind of easy to prepare for Florida because
they're similar athletes. But it's really hard to to you know,
duplicate without getting your guys hurt.
Speaker 16 (29:33):
Toughness, with physicality, with.
Speaker 17 (29:36):
Banging around, because you know you can do it with
the pads, but those big blocking paths.
Speaker 15 (29:40):
And you know, using brooms to swap shots.
Speaker 18 (29:43):
That's a lot different than.
Speaker 16 (29:45):
Than elbows and forearms and and knee to the knee.
Speaker 17 (29:48):
You know, uh, you know, Cronin is not a dirty
coach by any means, but those guys are.
Speaker 16 (29:53):
Not afraid to get dirty and and and and.
Speaker 15 (29:56):
You know you're gonna come out of that.
Speaker 16 (29:58):
Game bruised and sore and needing an ice bath. And
that's hard to do paint practice, not.
Speaker 18 (30:03):
Only from a physicality standpoint, but.
Speaker 17 (30:06):
From a we don't want to get our guys hurt standpoint.
Speaker 16 (30:09):
So yeah, not an easy thing to do.
Speaker 17 (30:10):
So my guess is it will be an interesting first
five six minutes, especially for these young guys who are
used to being bigger and stronger and tougher than the
kids they're playing.
Speaker 3 (30:20):
Brad Well from a from a Tucson standpoint, because it
is it's it's obviously two neutral site games against u
C A u C l A. Last year was in Phoenix,
which didn't sell out, and then this year it's in
LA which is essentially a home game for UCLA, but
it's not going to sell out.
Speaker 4 (30:34):
What is this?
Speaker 3 (30:35):
Is this something that you you see continuing as a
trend for neutral site home and homes?
Speaker 17 (30:42):
Unfortunately, I think so because it's it's made for TV
and for whatever reason, these you know, TV likes going
to these big NBA arenas. I don't know if it's
a logistics standpoint, if it's a look just looks good
because you can have that outside promoter kind of put
up some of the money.
Speaker 15 (31:01):
So I don't know.
Speaker 16 (31:01):
I would love it should be Polly and McHale.
Speaker 17 (31:04):
You know, Polly's not the home court at used to Franklin,
that's sure. McHale is what it was in the nineties
either or eighties.
Speaker 16 (31:11):
But there's still a mistique to it.
Speaker 17 (31:13):
You know, you're walking on campus in Westwood, you're walking
on campus and Tucson you've got you know, the students
don't have to, let's say, drive to the game, or
there are going to be students at.
Speaker 16 (31:25):
The game, because there may not be many.
Speaker 17 (31:26):
I don't know how many UCLA students are going to
make the track. They sure don't to the Rolls Bowl
for those football games.
Speaker 15 (31:33):
So it's a shame.
Speaker 17 (31:34):
But you know, I'd rather than play in you know,
in front of eight thousand people.
Speaker 18 (31:38):
In a fifteen thousand seed arena than not play at all.
Speaker 17 (31:40):
But it sure would be nice to have him playing
at Michale, have him playing at Polly and you know,
giving that that feel of the old back ten you know, Ray, Tom,
Barry Tompkins, you know, Blava the hell those guys that
that's how it's supposed to be.
Speaker 3 (31:56):
Dude, you're talking like the old dude I saw on
the street this morning, Like.
Speaker 17 (31:59):
Well, it's I am the old dude on the street.
Speaker 2 (32:02):
Below all these old dudes from back in the day,
Reek Cam and all that.
Speaker 4 (32:06):
Litten.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
Let's move to football real quick, are you happy where
they're at, or please where they're at, or anything like that.
Speaker 17 (32:13):
Yeah, you know, you know, you get greedy because if
you had told me maybe six and three right now,
I'd be thrilled.
Speaker 16 (32:18):
I'd be like, let's.
Speaker 17 (32:19):
Get Tom or let's get Brent the extension.
Speaker 18 (32:22):
But then you look at well, they probably should have
beat Yu, so they probably.
Speaker 16 (32:25):
Should be seven and.
Speaker 17 (32:26):
Two, and Houston's you know, not that good, so maybe
they should have beaten Houston, and you'd be talked about
trying to trying to sneak into the playoffs. But yeah,
you know, I like the fact that they did not
play well and still found a way to win. On Saturday,
people are like, oh, you know, he's he can't coach.
They toyed with kit you know, Kansas, they were four
(32:47):
and a half point favorites one by four and got
away with the win in the game that they have
traditionally lost.
Speaker 2 (32:55):
Yeah, that's a good way to put it, because it's true,
very true. Let me ask you, because you've been around
a long time, You've seen all these quarterbacks. Uh, Noel,
you know, will have a lot of the record books
by the time he's done. Uh, where does he sit
in terms of better quarterbacks at this program.
Speaker 16 (33:14):
You know, from a performance standpoint, he's right there. It's him.
It's it's Nick Foles, Nick Fole. Excuse me.
Speaker 18 (33:22):
You know, I still think Keith Smith.
Speaker 17 (33:24):
Is probably the most talented quarterback, but you know, he
had to split time with Ortiz, so he didn't get
to be have the career maybe he should have had.
But you know, especially if Noah comes back for another year,
he becomes the guy, and you know he might. I
think maybe the best comparison is he may be the
Jason Gardner of football. You know, he's not gonna probably
(33:46):
not gonna play in the NFL and if he's not
going to be a star or a starter, but.
Speaker 16 (33:50):
Man, that's a great college career.
Speaker 17 (33:52):
Same thing Jason Gardner leaves here, doesn't play a minute
in the NBA, which has hurt his legacy.
Speaker 16 (33:57):
But we all know how good that guy was. That
is one of the best players in school history. And
part of that is longevity. Four years as a starter
and for Noah Fefida could be three and a half years.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
As a starter. That's funny. That's with with the Garden. Yeah,
that's a good one, Okay.
Speaker 3 (34:13):
Then the Tucson Sugar souls can open up the bank
and get Fefida when he's done his school's career, and
now you keep him in Tucson. Right, that's a great
that's a great it's a great transitional community.
Speaker 17 (34:23):
It on paper, that sounds like a great idea.
Speaker 16 (34:25):
I wish. I hope the.
Speaker 15 (34:26):
Community would embrace that.
Speaker 17 (34:27):
Yeah, because that's kind of the one thing they kind
of need is a selling point. You know, it's having
a guy you know, you know you'd love for them,
and you know, I know he's at the end of
his career.
Speaker 16 (34:37):
You would have loved him. Maybe get Kadeem for a year.
I think he might be a little.
Speaker 18 (34:40):
Too beat up.
Speaker 16 (34:41):
Plus you've got to go coach at Flowing Wells Little League.
Speaker 17 (34:44):
But uh yeah, we uh they need a selling point,
I think because it's a good entertaining product, but there's
not a name value.
Speaker 16 (34:52):
If you could get.
Speaker 17 (34:53):
Noah Frafida and he'd probably be the best quarterback in
that league, put up some monster numbers, keep doing some endorsements,
let him be part of this community. That would be
wonderful for Tucson and for that team.
Speaker 4 (35:04):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (35:04):
So if you go on support the Sugar Skulls this year,
or next year in the summer, right, they build up
enough revenue and income to go out there and do it.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
And then after that's all over, the mayor why not? Yeah,
you want to put her on the fact. I know
so people would no one, but Noah as the mayor.
He can run it after. I mean, he's got a
little seasoning to do first. So Steve, you're getting ahead
of yourself. Don't don't be ridiculous, Brad. That's what I
do on this show. Brad, finish the sentence. U of
(35:33):
A has met my expectations for this football season, but
they'll exceed my expectations if they do this for the
rest of the year.
Speaker 16 (35:42):
Win two out of three.
Speaker 4 (35:44):
Yeah, that's a good season, I think.
Speaker 16 (35:46):
You know, Jake, if they can get the eight wins
that exceedse my expectations, they're in a very good bowl
game and you have things to build on for next year.
Still again, if Noah comes back.
Speaker 2 (35:55):
Two out of three and with the possibility of another one,
are you would?
Speaker 16 (36:00):
Yeah? Yeah.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
The only person in the rum that I thought that
was wand eight and four and yeah, with the chance
I jumped on that bagwagon pretty quickly, though. Okay, it
was like that guy.
Speaker 17 (36:09):
Yeah, I thought I thought six or seven was your
You're probably your high end at the beginning of the year,
So if you can get to eight, that'd be fantastic.
Speaker 4 (36:16):
I'm still with you.
Speaker 18 (36:17):
Eight a Bowl game, Well.
Speaker 17 (36:20):
No, I would love to go into the HU game
trying to figure out the eighty four things that have
to happen to get you in the big Yet.
Speaker 3 (36:27):
Well what I'm smiling because you teach He's right, Hey.
Speaker 4 (36:29):
We ain't there yet.
Speaker 5 (36:31):
Yeah, that's why it's a calm smile right now.
Speaker 4 (36:34):
Yeah, Okay, Brad, I want to can I ask more question.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
I'm going to take it back to basketball because it's
a it's a it's a it's a conversation that I
had with my family. We had it when we were
in Vegas talking about on the drive home about Mick Cronin. Right,
Cronan to me is not a player's coach, and maybe
he is behind closed doors, But how long and you
guys have been around the game much longer in that
in that atmosphere than I'll ever be. How long do
(36:57):
do players put up with something like that to where
it's just they go, I don't why am I playing
for a guy that's throwing me under the bus publicly.
Yeah right, yeah, and then just treating I mean, just
constant on the on the court.
Speaker 4 (37:08):
Answer that, and I'll come with the second one. Go ahead.
Speaker 17 (37:12):
I'm to be honest shocked he's still at UCLA, to
be really honest, because he had high turnover. And again
everyone has a new era within I l and maybe
and but UCLA don't have deep pockets because you know,
if you're paying me, I don't know what they're going, right,
it is, you're paying me fifty thousand dollars more to
(37:32):
play for a jerk, I do it.
Speaker 16 (37:35):
But you know, UCLA doesn't have the.
Speaker 17 (37:38):
Deep pockets that maybe Texas does to put up with Sean.
Speaker 16 (37:42):
So yeah, I'm a little surprised.
Speaker 17 (37:44):
But if he keeps winning, but he you know, he
hasn't necessarily want at a UCLA level. And I'm not
sure you can anymore at that job just based upon
the financials and things like that.
Speaker 16 (37:55):
But if you can keep the best players in LA home,
you have you have a chance. I'm just not sure.
Speaker 17 (38:00):
Yeah, he's eventually gonna wear out his welcome, just like
Ben Howland did.
Speaker 15 (38:03):
Yeah, and then with case, you know you're in trouble
with you UCLA.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
Well, let me say this to your point, you already
know who he is. Why would you go play for
him if you already know that? I mean, that's a
question that I have. But I mean, like Brad said,
if you're paying him. So if I if I pay
Brad fifty thousand more dollars than he's making right now, Brad,
you'll come to my office every single day and just
let me scream at you and then publicly shame you
on a constant basis.
Speaker 4 (38:26):
You're okay with that?
Speaker 16 (38:29):
Well, yeah, probably.
Speaker 4 (38:32):
Retirement comes quickly. I've got to.
Speaker 16 (38:35):
Ask what must what happened?
Speaker 15 (38:37):
But Crotin sends guys to the league, I mean he does.
Speaker 18 (38:40):
So it's not just.
Speaker 16 (38:41):
The fifty thousand dollars.
Speaker 17 (38:42):
Now, it's the you know, three point five to fifty
five million dollars later that.

Speaker 17 (39:15):
Now, he didn't throw his kids under the bus much.
But there are some guys who absolutely adore Sean Miller.
Speaker 16 (39:20):
There are others who would fight him if they saw
him on the street.
Speaker 17 (39:24):

Speaker 16 (39:25):

To win and and and and embraced kids.
Speaker 17 (39:30):
In college basketball, you know, there's a Tommy Loop method,
there's the you know, Califari method, and there's the Mitt
Cronin method. Now, I will say he's still probably the
most unlikable coach. I can't think of many others in
in in you know, the old PAC.

I on the Ball with Steve Rivera on Block Sports
fourteen fifty eight.
Speaker 2 (44:33):
So welcome back to wating the ball here on Fox
Sports fourteen fifteen. I'm Steve Rivera in with Blake Fieger
and one after controls. If you want to call five
two zero four one, six seventy four forty we don't
have like seven minutes, right, yep, six minutes. We went
along with with Brad the good stuff though good questions.
I thought your question is this expectation?
Speaker 4 (44:51):
What was good?
Speaker 16 (44:53):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (44:53):
Me I think it's honest. I mean, you get in that.
Speaker 3 (44:55):
Can I ask you guys a question if you guys
ever coroda story together?
Speaker 6 (44:59):
No?
Speaker 4 (44:59):
No, why not? Why? There's no real to do that?
Speaker 6 (45:03):
That's the only reason that there is no reason? Yes,
right now.
Speaker 3 (45:07):
The reason why I asked this, and I'm asking this
on air because you have a very specific knack that
I think a lot of writers don't is, especially locally,
is creating a story within a story story. Yeah right,
and then you have an incredible knack of how to
explain like a color commentary and the actual broadcaster. I
thought it would be the collaboration between the two. I
think would be interesting if you heard.
Speaker 2 (45:30):
I don't know how to answer this, but one writes
for me, he writes the stories. Yeah, but there's be no,
there's no simple question. It'd be more work than what
it's worth, I think.
Speaker 3 (45:41):
I mean, people can't see what. Uh that's interesting?
Speaker 4 (45:45):
You said that though? How do you see that? How
do you know that?
Speaker 14 (45:48):
Well?
Speaker 4 (45:48):
Because I read both of you guys.
Speaker 3 (45:50):
Okay, I mean I know he reads me. Yeah, I
know that read it today. Yeah, because you know, normal
human meanings for people list thing right now? You can't
see but Steve is giving me the finger middle finger
and telling me that I'm an fing idiot off off
the mic right now for asking that question. So we'll
move on, Steve, what's on the docu?
Speaker 17 (46:10):
Now?
Speaker 5 (46:10):
So what you're saying is the one wo'd be a
good broadcasting duo if we were to call it.
Speaker 4 (46:15):
Thank you guys.
Speaker 3 (46:16):
Yeah, you're you're the straight man, right, you play the
straight man and you're the funny guy that doesn't wear
sunscreen at Thanks for noticing at least that you do
the Bill walling Dave right. Yeah, yeah, give me a cupcake.
We gotta call Hello. You're on on the air nine
of the ball.
Speaker 4 (46:31):
Who's this.
Speaker 8 (46:33):
Hi, Steve? This is done done right on top.
Speaker 4 (46:35):
You got some time? What do you got, Blake?
Speaker 6 (46:39):
What's going on?
Speaker 15 (46:41):
Hey?
Speaker 8 (46:41):
Well, there's a lot to unpacked with this this this
show so far, Okay, Because I think for I like
to start if Noah. If Noah wins his bowl game
this year, he's probably the number one quarterback at Arizona
in what because I don't think.
Speaker 3 (47:00):
That's how are you judging it?
Speaker 16 (47:04):
Well?
Speaker 8 (47:07):
One has numbers, but two. No other quarterback has won
two bulls at Arizona in the in the storied history
of Arizona football, I can't think of another quarterback that
had won two bowl games. And if he stays for
next year, that gives him a possibility for three, and
(47:31):
then he's untouchable. He's number one. Not only that is
not last season or what is the word notwithstanding, well,
including last season. We don't get this season without last season,
and that a lot of that was Noah keeping that team.
Speaker 4 (47:50):
Together, right, No, I agree with you there.
Speaker 2 (47:52):
In fact, Brennan took the brunt on that one, saying
that it was he was the blame on all his failures.
Speaker 4 (47:58):
You're nutty, think I'd have to.
Speaker 5 (48:01):
Deep check that that winning two bowl games. I think
the last opportunity that came with was on New Solomon
when he took Arizona the festival and then the next
year went to New Mexico, but.
Speaker 4 (48:12):
He didn't win too.
Speaker 5 (48:13):
That's the That's the last time I could think of
a quarterback having that opportunity.
Speaker 8 (48:18):
Well, here's and that's the other thing. On New Solomon
had a great freshman year and then after that he
declined the rest of his time here. So Tama got
hurt at the end of his career and decline. So
I mean, and and that's not happening with Noah and
the other.
Speaker 3 (48:36):
For you done really quick on that because it's especially
in this day and age, for him to stay and
stay through the program, through the three years that he had.
I think that adds an extra piece to that to
to make a case for your argument and stay healthy
because he's stay healthy.
Speaker 8 (48:52):
Yeah, I mean, that's that's it's it's the numbers. And
and you put his intangibles with that well, because a
lot of Nick, a lot of Nick Foles stuff is post.
Speaker 2 (49:02):
You of a well true true. I mean, he's had
a true but and you're giving me That's why I
asked where would you put it in? How would you
put it? But you're not taking him over Nick Foles.
You're not taking him over Nick Foles. If you're the draft,
if you're if you're saying quarterbacks at you a Nick.
Speaker 8 (49:19):
No, no, no, no, I'm not Steve. I'm talking about
his Arizona career. He's the number one. He's the number
one quarterback at Arizona. Would I would I draft him
ahead of Falls? No? I probably wouldn't draft him ahead
of Matt Scott.
Speaker 4 (49:36):
Yeah. To be honest with you. I just needed you
to say that.
Speaker 8 (49:41):
Because his size. His size does not translate to the
NFL game. Yeah, I guess the weekend, Poor poor poor
Ted tedor all McMillan gets drafted to the Panthers and
they got the kids. Their quarterback looks like he's a
junior in high school.
Speaker 4 (49:56):
Yeah yeah, well psyche ups up the road.
Speaker 1 (50:01):
That too, that too.
Speaker 8 (50:03):
When I saw him in the preseason game against gets
the Raiders, he just looked like a angry maker wish
kid out there. Yikes, that's what he looks like. The
other well, because he's so small.
Speaker 4 (50:15):
Kyler Murray done got but we gotta go.
Speaker 8 (50:20):
I didn't get to attendance.
Speaker 4 (50:21):
Okay, go how much I win? H thirty seconds?
Speaker 8 (50:26):
Thirty seconds, thirty seconds? The two sum media needs to
get over it. This season is done. As far as
the tennis, we got one game to go. We're gonna
get what we get good point. And the only thing
that's going to fix that is winning good point. That's
the only thing that's going to fix that is winning.
Because the baseball team gets people and it's hotter than
hell out there, but they win good point and they
(50:46):
won for a long time.
Speaker 4 (50:48):
Okay, good point than last time.
Speaker 8 (50:50):
Thank you done, Thanks guys
Speaker 2 (50:53):
We gotta go come back and we'll get some breaking news,
maybe get some more more casts.
