Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is I on the Ball with Steve Rivera on
Fox Sports fourteenth fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services. In
sure your most prized possess yets.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
But good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to I on the Ball
hero Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera in today
with me. Is my Crazy Friday guest your co host
jakeen Zawaz.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
You mean you mean Jay Gonzalez of the world champion
Los Angeles Dodgers.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
I forgot that part, crazy Dodger fan and we got
ready behind the wheel here.

Speaker 4 (00:37):
Oh God help me us. I should say. Yeah, look,
you know I've done the math.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
There haven't been that many of these in my lifetime,
so I'm gonna take them as I get them.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Dude, they lost in Game six, that's all right. How
many time you see a balls get stuck like that?

Speaker 4 (00:55):
Just weird?

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Not in not in the major leagues, because you know
their stadiums are also kind of tight. But you know
what happened in softball all the time. Yeah, that's true, right,
he was taking to the chain leads fences at the parties,
at the city fields and as sports park and stuff.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
Absolutely, but what a crazy last couple of Days. Yeah,
it was. It was a very good series.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yeah, and I think, I mean, I think it was
on the record on Friday saying that I didn't think
they were going to win it because I thought the
Dodgers needed to win it in six with Snell and
ya I'm a moto going and that if it went
to a seventh that I didn't think the Dodgers could
hold him off and they weren't going to until like
the one ninety hitter, you know, hit went over the
fence and uh, you know, and sent that came into
extra innings.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
It was crazy. A great series though.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
It was an incredible series look for whether you're a
Dodger fan, a Blue Jays fan, and nobody fan. It
was a great world series set an eighteen inning game,
a game seven that went eleven innings, you know, with
with mostly close games that there was a blowout in
the first game and then everything else was tight.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Would you We had ship with Hail on the show
yesterday and he said what many that I talked to
said said, Toronto may have been the better.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
Team, but well, yeah, you know when look Limpert, there's
a Toronto was playing better. I don't know if you
call him the better team, but they were definitely playing better.
The Dodgers weren't hitting for squad and didn't hit for
squad the whole you know, the whole series.

Speaker 4 (02:19):
They didn't they didn't hit the ball.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
But somehow they figured out how to win games. You know,
that eighteen inning game. You know, they went what like
eleven innings without getting a run, you know, and then
the Dodgers got the one that they needed, and then
you know, again, it took three solo homers in the
late innings from Game seven.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
And from a guy who doesn't hit home runs.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
From a guy who doesn't hit, Yeah, that just doesn't
hit home runs, it doesn't, you know, And I love
that guy. It's funny because you know, I don't know
if it was two years ago. You know, he showed
up on the team and I'm like, Adam, where you know,
where did this rookie come from? He goes, Dad, he's
not a rookie. He's thirty five years old. And I'm like, okay,

(03:02):
so you know he's he's an old looking twenty five
year old Mexican, but he was, you know, and he
just look, it was just the one spot, the one
pitch and they took advantage of it, and then they
win the series, and it was it was unbelievable. I
really really When when they hit the three run homer
early in the game, I'm thought, Okay, this is it.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
They're gonna blow him out.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
And then when when when then when the Dodgers got
cut it close, and then they got another run and
made it forward to you know, forward to two. I'm like,
Dodge don't going to win this. They're just not going to.
Blue Jays are better, They're going to win the game.
And then they just hung around and hung around and
hung around and won the game. So it's been fun.
It's been fun. I've been well, you know, every every
two second or third video on my social media feeds

(03:45):
is a is a Dodger video or a Blue Jay
fan reacting to getting beat and they're you know, punching
their TVs and stuff like that.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
It's crazy. But you know, hey, I waited a.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
Long time for this stuff, Steve, so you know, I'm
not gonna apologize for it.

Speaker 4 (03:58):
Shouldn't eighty eight. This is the third one, right, third one.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
It went from eighty eight to twenty twenty without it,
without a World Series championship, so now there's three three
in the last six years. That's it for you. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
I mean, you know I was good with last years,
but this was this was great to see how they
won it.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Okay, did you you had an observation that the Chip said, yeah,
I kind of agree with you.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Oh yeah.

Speaker 5 (04:24):
I was talking about how, you know, you like, sometimes
you find yourself in situations just like over and over again,
and you know.

Speaker 4 (04:31):
High pressure situations.

Speaker 5 (04:32):
And he talked about, you know, in that game seven
when they're going into extra innings, and he's like, and
I asked him if it was like.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
If your snake bit kind of yeah, you know, they've
gone through all these things and they couldn't find a.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
Way, right, I mean the had so many chances.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yeah, you know, the the toe on home plate, on
the on the plate at the plate, which was crazy,
you know, the double play at that ended game six.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
I mean even the po has got.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
You know, the pot his catch, you know, just all
that stuff that there were chances for them.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
To win that game. They just didn't get it, you know.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
And and you know, look, being an Arizona fan, you
feel for you know, you feel for blue Jay fan
because those are the kinds of things that happened. You know,
when you're an Arizona fan, something really stupid happens and
you lose and you can't explain it other than your
snake bit.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
Yeah, that's just how it goes sometimes.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
So another year of uh, you know what are the champs?

Speaker 4 (05:25):
Man?

Speaker 5 (05:25):
Yeah, I'm going to get the next that Japanese guy too, probably,
you know, funny.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
Because now you're starting to hear okay, this is who's
not going to be back and all that kind of stuff,
and you know, it's it's gonna be weird to see that,
you know, guys who may have been key players who
might not be back and stuff like that. I mean,
Mickey Rojas is a is a free agent. You know,
will the Dodgers resign him because in the grand scheme
of things.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
He's not that good. He just did a spectacular thing.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
Now, will the Dodgers respect that and keep him because
of that because he's a fan favorite and he's got
he's on T shirts and stuff?

Speaker 4 (05:58):
Or is it a business deal and you say, you know, Magey,
we got to let you go. You know what that is.
It's a business.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
It is it is, it is, you know, well and
that's the thing, you know, again a perspective I heard,
you know from people say, well they bought the series. Well,
you know what, every owner of every baseball team is
a billionaire or close to it.

Speaker 4 (06:19):
They have the money too, they're just not spending it.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
They choose not to spend it, right, The Dodgers choose
to spend the money and these other guys don't. So
if you want to call that buying it, okay, if
the Dodgers want to call it, we're investing in winning, okay.
But every team can do what the Dodgers are doing,
they just choose not to. And so guess what, Dodgers
are going to be the champs again?

Speaker 5 (06:41):
Do you think they're gonna end up going through like
maybe like a rebuild thing like down the line?

Speaker 4 (06:45):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Well, you know, I don't know, because first of all,
they got a bunch of old guys. You know, Freddy
Freeman's like thirty five, thirty six, I think, Mookie's mid thirties,
Miguel Rojas is thirty six, Uh, Max Mounsey's you know,
mid to late they're all you know, they've all been around.
And that's the other thing I mean, here, you got
a bunch of guys who are from a baseball standpoint,

(07:08):
old guys who played the most games the team has
ever played in Major League history, and still hung on
to win, to win the thing, you know, and with
all the against all these young guys that the Blue
Jays have, I mean, twenty two year old kid, you savage,
Oh god, crazy man. Guy was so good because I'm thinking,
you know, in in in game because he pitched Game six,

(07:33):
it was game six, Yeah, I'm thinking, I think it
was you know, they're not they can't beat this guy.

Speaker 4 (07:38):
You know, and then they did. Well. What Roberts did too,
was he pitched Game five, but he won.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
What Roberts did was what you didn't expect him to
do in July or August or September was bringing up
the guns.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
He was just starters as relievers, which was which was
which is explains how little baseball you know, I really know,
because if you know, I didn't know he was going
to do that, because I thought, if they're going to
rely on this bullpen that they have, they can't win
this thing.

Speaker 4 (08:07):
And that's what I've been saying for you were probably right, right.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
I mean, look at Game one, Holy hell, you know,
the only game that the bullpen had a good game
was the eighteen inning game. And I don't know how
they did that, right, but even in that game, they
used a couple of starters.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
So you know, give it to Dave Roberts.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
He managed the hell out of this thing, you know,
going with his gut to put two guys in in
Game seven who hadn't been hitting the ball, hadn't been
doing really anything. Rojas hit makes a great play on defense,
it's a home run, and Andy Pye has makes that
catch in center field. I thought he had killed Key Kernandis.
I thought he'd killed him. I thought he's dead. And

(08:47):
I don't know if you if you saw the nada's
explanation for it, that he he laid there because he
thought the game was over.

Speaker 4 (08:54):
He thought they lost.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
And then and then yes, yes he had the f
and ball and he said yeah, and he got up
and what's all that?

Speaker 4 (09:03):
So that was good. That was a good interview.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
Okay, let's let's relax from that. Okay, you got about
five minutes. A big game tomorrow. Football. Every game is
a big game. You don't it's a big game. Why
do you think it's a big game. Both teams have
a chance to be qualified for a well game.

Speaker 4 (09:19):
That's not it in Jay's world. That could be anything.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
It could be the fact that if wins tomorrow, they
go over on their wins.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
Oh, I thought it was already. I was half five
and a half.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
I thought it was four and a half in some places. Really, Yeah,
that's I thought about that.

Speaker 5 (09:36):
I think it might have started out up for it half.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
Yeah. I didn't want my wife to hear that. I'm shocked, shocked.
So here's so not tomorrow with the tail game over there.
By the way, you have any tail gate okay, because
Rick is going to try to meet with us. I
think he owes money to you or me and me.
I know he knows one money to you. An manuo man. Yeah,
it's a breakfast breakfast, good breakfast, breakfast breakfast. You'll be

(10:02):
there as well, so come on over, man spirit. I
never make it in time. I never make it after
the show. I well, I put up the podcast.

Speaker 4 (10:11):
Oh oh, take your time with it. Well, whatever you.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
Can do it from this, bring it, bring it over
to do it there, all right, or just do it
when you're over in the press boxes.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
Okay, Yeah, there's no yes, no one's dying to We
do have Gronk tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (10:23):
So oh wow, cool for you guys. Yeah, so at
your leisure. Okay, yeah, awesome.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
Don't tell the guys that they're in the room tomorrow.
They don't because they don't care. Yeah, they will know.
That's why I yeah, okay, so big and that's not
a big game tonight. But we haven't talked to you
about basketball.

Speaker 4 (10:42):
Here.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
I wanted to talk about this. This is what people
are talking about now. Coen has a fantastic game. This
is how they lose sleep in this town. How ESPN
disrespected CoA because they rated him so low as a freshman,
top fifteen, top seventeen, whatever. And I'm thinking, this is
what you worry about. He had a good, a great game,
but now you're worried about how ESPN treated him.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
You got twenty nine games left, and then there's all
the people who are saying, man, we're really good. We
were to get to the final four this year. Like,
pump the breaks, man, please pump the breaks just a
little bit.

Speaker 2 (11:18):
How many times we've been here at least four or
five when they're not highly thought of and then they
win these games and then they're in the top ten
or what right, Oh we're gonna No, it doesn't work
that way.

Speaker 4 (11:29):
And a reminder that not counting the very end. But
I said it a million times.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
Loot's worst team won the National Championship. Of all the teams, Yeah,
won the National Championship, finished fifth in the pack in
the in the in the Pac ten fourths, got but
got a four seed someone because the games they won
earlier in the year and then went on a run. Guys,
let the season play out. Yes, you're happy they beat Florida.
I mean that's a big win. It's got them in

(11:56):
the conversation now, so they're going to get attention. Those
things all always help when you get to the end
of the.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Year, unless unless it seeps in the heads of the play.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
Right, But you know, just let the season play out
and and and quit saying we better get to the
final four or this season sucks. I mean, come on, folks,
It's just like it was one game. And how many
times have they done that?

Speaker 2 (12:19):
Tons of times over and over. I covered them for
three years. It happens a lot all the time. Five
six times, no one pays attention. And oh wow, when
the n I t preseason. Beat these teams anow, they're
in the top, but we're going to be great.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
Look if these guys, you know, Cole, Pete, Jayde and
Bradley want to want to use quote quote unquote disrespect
as some sort of a way to motivate themselves, then
you know what, go ahead, whatever it takes to get
you to play hard and better and get you know
a little more bounce.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
Out your statement, right man, Fine do it.

Speaker 3 (12:50):
I'm I'm happy for it. I will take it and
go out there and beat the hell out of everybody.
But for the fan on the side to sit there
and say, you know, one losing sleep over that and
then to to be after one game be saying, oh,
we better get to the final four this year.

Speaker 4 (13:05):
Come on, man.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
Yeah, And that's what one game in. I mean, that
was a great game. It's like, this is this is
how we do what I'm teasing. So Jay went five
for five the first weekend of the year. Jah, that
guy knows how to pick names.

Speaker 4 (13:21):
Five for five, dab that.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Hey, I had a week last week, beat beat one.
There you go, I got a three, there you go.
I know, I know were that momentum.

Speaker 2 (13:36):
It doesn't exist we'll see, let's go because we have
Aaron Torres here, and then we're gonna have a kid
from Kansas, davidschel Rods. Okay, he's going to be on
the second hour about tomorrow's tomorrow's game, and then tonight

How you doing.

Speaker 11 (18:52):
I'm doing well, bellas you know, me and Steve were
robin elbows just a few nights ago in Vegas. I'm
glad you made it back safe to Steve, and uh yeah,
Arizona first couple of days of the season.

Speaker 10 (19:03):
The buzz of.

Speaker 2 (19:03):
College basketball for suir, Well, let me tell you, but
not a surprise to you or me. Right about an
hour before the game, we kind of start each other
in T mobile, you know. Notice, yeah, and I said,
we talked and I think I think they're going to win.
And then he did said the same thing, right.

Speaker 11 (19:21):
Yeah, yeah, no, I did, Steve. You know, I said
this when the polls came out, is what I thought
Florida was.

Speaker 12 (19:27):
A little bit overrated.

Speaker 11 (19:28):
You know, I thought that the assumption that you're just
going to replace a starting backcourt, and I understand you
can get good players in the portal down, but all
three of their guards got drafted, and it wasn't like,
you know, hey, Walter Clayton was really good, and then
he played with two guys that are you know, selling
insurance for State Farm right now, Like both those guys
that he was playing with are in the NBA. But

(19:49):
I thought part of it was Arizona. Two is that
you know, I don't think that you could say that
Arizona was you know, underrated. They were ranked thirteenth in
the first eight people. But I just thought the conversation
about them, it just felt like there was this upper
tier in the Big twelve with BYU and Texas Tech
and Houston for sure, and I just felt like Arizona

(20:13):
was kind of being lumped.

Speaker 12 (20:14):
In, you know, that next group.

Speaker 11 (20:15):
But you know, we like them. But I just said,
you know, do they have you know, other things to
work on?

Speaker 12 (20:22):
Of course, every team has those.

Speaker 11 (20:23):
But if you think BYU can compete at the top
of the Big twelve, and you think that Texas Tech
can do the same, and you think that they're capable
of going to a Final four, maybe competing for a
national championship, that I don't see any reason that you
wouldn't say the same about Arizona. So it was just
an interesting discourse about Arizona to me. And you know
it's early. They got Ucla next week and then you know,

(20:45):
it keeps on going from there. But I just bring
it up because I think through that one game, they
kind of proved that maybe a lot of the people
that consider them themselves experts need to do a little
bit more homework on Arizona.

Speaker 3 (20:55):
Really, and that's all that this game does, right. This
game doesn't say Arizona's going into the final four. This
game just says Arizona's pretty good, right, Florida is still
pretty good. But let's you know, let's play this thing
out and see what happens. I think that's all it does.
You know, we've already got Arizona fans over here saying
we better.

Speaker 4 (21:13):
Get to the final four.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
Right after that, you know, we won one game, we
better get to the final four. It's like, relax, It's
it's a game, and it's great that they play these
games and we can talk about them. But it doesn't
say anything more than maybe Arizona is a little better
than we thought.

Speaker 4 (21:27):
Who knows.

Speaker 11 (21:29):
Yeah, it's such a it's such a fickle thing, right,
because I mean you even look at college football. You know,
remember Week one, the big opener that everybody was excited
about was LSU Clemson, and you know, we know how
it's going for those two teams. And I'm just using
that as an example. You know, it's tough because you
know it was funny. You know, I joined our buddy
Mike Luke on his postgame show and you know they

(21:51):
had the opposite jade dad fan saying it's one game,
who cares? It's a long season. And I'll be honest,
I don't like that attitude because you know, you wait
from late March until early November to get live action.
And I'm sorry, but you know you're allowed to overreact
and allowed to have fun, especially when your team wins.
But I think you're right, Jay, I you know, especially

(22:13):
and it's a cliche, but I think it's a fair one.
In this portal nil world. You just you think you know,
and you think, well, not not any one fan in particular,
any one media member. You know, you think you have
these teams figured out, but even the coaches will tell
you know, you don't really know until you get these
guys in game.

Speaker 10 (22:32):
Action.

Speaker 11 (22:32):
There's just so many new pieces in so many new places,
you know that that you just never really know.

Speaker 1 (22:38):
Now.

Speaker 11 (22:39):
I think Arizona's a little bit unique because they have
a couple maybe more veterans than some. But like with Florida,
you know, the guards super super, you know, both are new,
one of them's coming from the IVY League, and it's like, well,
maybe Arizona's just play better than we thought, or maybe
those guards aren't.

Speaker 12 (22:55):
As good as we thought.

Speaker 11 (22:56):
So we got you know, upwards of third nine games
left on the calendar to kind of figure out who
everybody is. But I think it's it's fair both ways, jays,
you know, as you guys joke, maybe don't book the
tickets to Indy yet. But the counter to that is,
you know, I don't want to hear it. It's one
game that means nothing. Enjoy it because we haven't had

(23:17):
one of those for any of these teams since late
March early April.

Speaker 4 (23:21):
Yeah, yeah, no question.

Speaker 2 (23:23):
Well what impressed you the most outside of someone not
named Koa Pete because you know we've all talked about
him enough already, what impressed.

Speaker 4 (23:31):
Me the most?

Speaker 12 (23:31):
You know, I of it is?

Speaker 11 (23:32):
I mean, look, obviously Jaden Bradley.

Speaker 12 (23:36):
I think that goes without saying.

Speaker 11 (23:38):
You know, I was thinking about this with Jaden is
you know, he's always really kind of had to share
the backcourt Kyler Boswell love both and I think, you know,
Jaden at times can play a little bit too fast,
but that's also one of his strengths is he's just
so quick with the ball that he just creates so
many problems for the opposing defense. And so, you know,

(23:59):
I think with Caleb Love that sometimes gets lost in
the shuffle. But then the counter to it is there's.

Speaker 12 (24:04):
Obviously no Caleb Love this year, and it's kind of
his thing.

Speaker 11 (24:07):
So I think he stood out honestly this, you know,
and Steve, I don't know if you felt the same
way being courtside, but you know, I think Kreegus got
a lot of you know, maybe negative commentary because you know, offensively,
he missed some kind of shots around the rim. But honestly, this, defensively,
there were two or three times that I looked down that,
you know, one of those big guys from I don't

(24:28):
know if you what were you going to say, Steve, like like, yeah, defensively,
I just felt like he just those guys couldn't get
to their spots, they couldn't get comfortable. So I know, offensively,
you know, he struggled a little bit, but I think
defensively he didn't get enough credit for what he did well.

Speaker 3 (24:45):
And then again across, I mean, they just did so
many good things, is what is what I saw. You know,
when Bradley needed you know, when they needed a bucket
really bad, Bradley got him one. Yeah, you know, Pete
was just all over the place, even you know Delorso
who still can't guard anybody, but you know, always got
to be able to do is go in there and
make a couple of baskets when he comes in the game.
And then and then that was really good. So you know,

(25:09):
you there were just a lot of good pieces that
give you a feeling that this team could actually be
pretty good.

Speaker 4 (25:16):
Go ahead and mention him now, well.

Speaker 11 (25:19):
No, yeah, I mean he was just really impressive. And
I think you know, you know, I don't know listen,
you know, all these European players, everyone's background is a
little bit different. It's hard to know, you know, who
played at what.

Speaker 12 (25:31):
Level and for how long.

Speaker 11 (25:32):
It's just it's impossible to to you know, even for
guys like us that love it. It's impossible to know everything,
but I just felt like that that's a kid that
you know, he stepped in and and you know, he
didn't look overwhelmed.

Speaker 12 (25:42):
And maybe it's a naivete about you.

Speaker 11 (25:45):
Know what this game means on the college basketball landscape,
defending national champs, you know, close to a sellout crowd
there in Vegas. But you know, he just looked like
it was just another game, and you know, the game
wasn't too fast for him. And I think to the
to the word Jay used is you know of.

Speaker 12 (26:00):
Understood the assignment, understood the role.

Speaker 11 (26:02):
And I think, you know, with this portal, you know, evolution,
I think that's kind of a cool thing about this
new era is you know, you don't just have to
bring in a bunch of new players and hope.

Speaker 12 (26:12):
You know, you can bring in players and.

Speaker 11 (26:14):
Say, hey, we need you to be a you know,
a Tobayowaka, mostly a defensive player off the bench, and
that's going to be your role and that's what you're
gonna do. You know, different guy, you know del Orso
to Jay's point, you know, shoot three's be a factor
that way. And you know, I think the word that
Jay used is just pieces and guys that fit in roles,

(26:35):
and that.

Speaker 12 (26:35):
Was what stood out to me more than anything.

Speaker 11 (26:37):
It just felt like the seven eight pieces that they
have that played, they all fit really well together.

Speaker 12 (26:42):
Again, it's only one game, to your guys point.

Speaker 11 (26:44):
But they looked.

Speaker 12 (26:45):
Really good together and the pieces kind of fit really well.

Speaker 2 (26:48):
Is also so one of the things I said, I
think on Wednesday when I came back, was that they
won despite Bury's a guy who can score right, didn't
have and to your point of us didn't have a
very good game offensively and I'll walk a fouled out.
So you're telling three key pieces that didn't really do
it any yep.

Speaker 3 (27:08):
And still such a great point in the in the
first half.

Speaker 11 (27:15):
Well, and I was gonna say, it's just the Bury
stuff is such a great point. And you know I.

Speaker 12 (27:20):
Said it on my social media is you know, there
was this.

Speaker 11 (27:22):
Notion from some of the media, not everybody, but you know,
this notion that Arizona didn't do enough in the portal
and it's like, well, you know, you got two McDonald's
all Americans, and you know, I think Cola Pete kind
of proved like there wasn't a dude.

Speaker 13 (27:36):
In the portal that you could have gotten that gave
you what CoA Pete gave you on Monday night. And
I think we're gonna see a lot more from Brandon
Bury starting tonight. We all know what the pedigree is,
we all know what the talent is. But to your point, Jay,
or to your point, Steve like, didn't really get much.

Speaker 11 (27:53):
From him and he's still won. So that's the cool part.

Speaker 2 (27:56):
I know.

Speaker 11 (27:56):
It's it's a kind of a theme of our conversation today.
You know, basically, you don't want to take too much,
but you don't want to take anything. And I think
the great thing is you learned a lot. You know
there's stuff to improve on, but you got to win.

Speaker 12 (28:10):
And that's something Florida can't say, and it's something that
a lot.

Speaker 11 (28:12):
Of other teams can't say through this early part of
the season. And you get the win and you know
there's a lot of work still.

Speaker 4 (28:18):
To be done. Are you voting? Are you a voter
or no?

Speaker 11 (28:23):
Like in the AP paul Er, I mean yesterday with election.

Speaker 12 (28:25):
Day, So I don't know what you're talking about here.
We gotta Yeah, I vote on some of the national awards,
but not in the Weekly Bowl.

Speaker 2 (28:34):
So okay, okay, because if you did, where do you
think they would be to start the season. And maybe
now there's always we overreaction too. I mean you got
to kind of temporarything.

Speaker 11 (28:46):
I mean, I think.

Speaker 12 (28:47):
They're a top ten team.

Speaker 11 (28:48):
I mean, I think the way that I put it
is pretty much this is that you know, listen, I
still think Houston runs that league until further notice, and
that applies to the other fifteen teams.

Speaker 12 (29:00):
If I was on you know, Colorado, you know Utah.

Speaker 11 (29:04):
BYU, that applies to everybody. Everything runs through Houston. But
I think during that next group, and like I said,
to kind of lead the segment, I just felt like,
you know, because I put out a tweet about how
Arizona's disrespected and this and that, and people said, you know,
they haven't made a Final four sinntil one, and I said, okay,
but I felt like, you know, BYU has never made
a Final four, and they were talked about all off season.

(29:28):
You know, Texas Tech made a Final four, but it
was two coaches ago. It's three coaches ago, you know,
six years ago. It's like they got talked about more.
So I think they're a top ten team.

Speaker 9 (29:39):
I do.

Speaker 12 (29:39):
I would put them listen, like I said, until.

Speaker 11 (29:42):
Further notice, I would just put Houston in a tier
onto themselves, and then I'd put about four teams from
the Big twelve of the next tier, and Arizona would
be there, and you know, Texas Tech would be there
right now, they got a lot of injuries. You know,
BYU looked actually a little bit underwhelming on Monday night.
Kansas is going to play Big One tonight. We'll learn
a lot about them. But I would probably put Arizona

(30:03):
that next tier, in the Big twelve. But I would
have them as a top ten team right now, because again,
we can only go based on what we think we know,
and we still think Laura is a pretty good team
and Arizona took care of business the other night.

Speaker 2 (30:15):
Do you think and this is a legit question, maybe
not to the locals here, but okay, Arizona hasn't gone
to the Final four since two thousand and one, and
we know the history of them in the tournament, right
They've kind of been high seed young beaten by.

Speaker 4 (30:28):
The lower seeds.

Speaker 2 (30:29):
That that may play into the part of the disrespect
because yeah, okay, they want a game or two, but
you know in a few months, look what's gonna happen.

Speaker 11 (30:40):
I think that's maybe part of its steep. But again,
then how do you explain BYU? Is it just BYU
is new and different and fun because BYU, you know,
top ten team in the No, no, the top ten
team in the.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
Yeah, you're going to apples. You're going to apples to apples.
I'm going to Arizona on an island where okay, yeah,
and then we know what's going to happen, just specific
to them, it.

Speaker 11 (31:05):
Might be, you know, and I think you know what,
because you want to know what I honestly think it
is more than anything is Tommy. I don't know if
you guys have a relationship with Tommy. If you do,
he just I don't have a relationship with him. And
he just doesn't strike me as somebody that really cares
what the outside noise is. And I think they even
taking a step further. Yeah, well, and I actually think

(31:30):
that's part of it. You know, I was thinking about
this is you know tom Golden Monday Night, you know,
great with the media. You know, you see him do
interviews if you need a SoundBite, if if you know,
you need some context.

Speaker 12 (31:41):
On his team. You can give him a bus.

Speaker 11 (31:43):
Listen, this is not a disrespect to Tommy, but Kevin
hung the BYU head coach. I've interviewed him twice one
on one, and he got the job about eighteen months ago,
you know, And so if I've interviewed him twice, you
can imagine how much access the local guys have to
him other national interviews things like that. You know, with Tommy,
it's just it's his personality and I actually respect it.

(32:04):
He's true to himself. I mean, you know, I have
no access to him. I think most.

Speaker 12 (32:08):
People don't have access to him.

Speaker 11 (32:09):
But I actually think that that's part of it, is
that if Tommy was one of those guys behind the
scenes that you know, somebody picked Arizona to to finish
sixth in the Big Twelve and he kind of texted them, hey,
you know, you might be off on my team. You know,
it makes you think about things a little bit differently.
But I just don't think it's from the biggest names
in the media to the student newspaper. I just don't

(32:31):
think he really cares what other people think. I think
he believes in his way of doing things, his way
of evaluating, putting rosters together, and so I actually think
that's part of it. He's just not a guy that's
out there.

Speaker 12 (32:43):
He's true to himself. I have no personal.

Speaker 11 (32:45):
Problem with it, but I think it probably does hurt
the perception of his teams, where again, you have people
talking about Texas Tech or BYU and you know, if
you have a question, you can get the coach on
the phone, or you can get an assistant coach on
the phone, and it just doesn't really operate that way
with this coaching staff at Arizona.

Speaker 3 (33:02):
That's a that's a really interesting observation because you're right,
I mean, he really doesn't care.

Speaker 4 (33:06):
You know, he's just done on social As long as he's.

Speaker 3 (33:09):
Out there winning games and and his team plays the
way he wants him to play, that's really all he
cares about.

Speaker 4 (33:14):
And you're you're probably right.

Speaker 3 (33:15):
He doesn't have the you know, the high profile among
you know, among particularly the media, but just in general,
you know, I mean there's probably a lot of people
who don't even know who the coach is at Arizona
ever since Loo it's been gone.

Speaker 12 (33:28):
So you know, that's what I was gonna say.

Speaker 11 (33:30):
Yeah, yeah, now I was gonna say that is I
just know even the guys that maybe I.

Speaker 12 (33:35):
Don't have a relationship with you kind.

Speaker 14 (33:37):
Of know, who are the guys that are like, they'll.

Speaker 12 (33:39):
Shoot you a text or hey, if you need anything.

Speaker 11 (33:41):
Call me or you know, if you want to get
the story straight.

Speaker 12 (33:44):
And I just don't think that's who Tommy is.

Speaker 11 (33:46):
And again, he's true to himself, so it doesn't bother me.

Speaker 12 (33:50):
He's never gone wrong by me.

Speaker 11 (33:52):
But I do think it probably hurts the perception on
a national scale. And then I think the Steve's point
as well. You know, he makes a final four, and
I think he will at some point, it changes the
entire perception of him in the program. Even though Arizona's
made final fours before, it's obviously been a little while.
So I think when that tournament run does come, I
think a lot of the stuff that we're talking about
now maybe goes away a little bit. Wow, Steve, I

(34:18):
just turned forty this summer.

Speaker 2 (34:19):
So you were fifteen the last time. That's more than
a while.

Speaker 4 (34:22):
You said you.

Speaker 11 (34:25):
Want to hear a funny story, please.

Speaker 4 (34:27):
We got about a minute.

Speaker 11 (34:30):
Todd Golden, the.

Speaker 13 (34:31):
Losing coach, is one day younger than me, born one
day younger than me.

Speaker 11 (34:36):
I haven't actually talked to him about it, but I
will next time I see it, I will.

Speaker 13 (34:40):
I'll see, if I'll be honest, I was hoping to
see him in the whole way on Monday and say happy.

Speaker 14 (34:44):
Late birthday, and he'd be like, why.

Speaker 11 (34:46):
Would showing me a happy birthday? And I would have
told him I'm actually one day older than you.

Speaker 13 (34:49):
Saw in July sixth, eighty five, and Todd Golden is
I believe July seventh eighty times.

Speaker 2 (34:55):
So what do you What the hell happened to your
career and money?

Speaker 12 (34:59):
Sat?

Speaker 11 (35:01):
Yeah, I mean i'd say I'm starving at the bottom
of the barrel, but then you know, I don't know
what that says about you. Now, yeah, I will say
I think he's one day younger and certainly in a
different tax bracket. It's not because he lives at Ward
and I live in California.

Speaker 4 (35:18):
I can tell you that, Erin, you're the best. Thank
you man, Thanks Erin.

Speaker 11 (35:21):

a I had a nineteen Yeah, it would have been

I thought I thought Aaron's uh, you know, saying that
he thought maybe Arizona was just a little underrated, maybe
Florida a little because at thirteen they were thirteen or fourteen.
I thought that's about right. Yeah, you know, yeah, I
think they're I don't know that. I thought that they
were not fourth in the big in the big tild
but also done.

Speaker 4 (41:32):
We're to put him at the top.

Speaker 2 (41:33):
You know, this is the thing that they played very
well first game, right out of the gate, YadA, YadA.
I think you can read something into it, not too
much into it. Other teams haven't played yet, so you
don't know how good they are. Duke look good against Texas, right,
but they didn't be defending champions. Hello, you're on the
air nine of the ball.

Speaker 10 (42:00):
Man?

Speaker 14 (42:01):
Heck yeah, baby? What'd you think Jay?

Speaker 11 (42:03):
I'll be here?

Speaker 14 (42:04):
Be honest, I.

Speaker 4 (42:06):
Vic, I didn't think they were gonna do it. I
just didn't.

Speaker 3 (42:09):
I did you know going into those last two games,
you know, one having to go win two on the
road two. You know, having having seen that Blake Snell
had lost twice to them, I thought these guys are
really good, and I just I just didn't think they
were going to win it, and they and then they did.

Speaker 14 (42:23):
Yeah, I'm the same way. But I'm gonna repeat myself, Steve.
I I told Steve already. I called one hundred people
and I asked them, you know, did the better team win?
And you heard it on Facebook and the whole word,
and everybody finally starts saying, you know what, man, in
a seven game series, the best team did win?

Speaker 4 (42:43):
That usually does it?

Speaker 14 (42:45):
Said, the Blue Jays had you know, even my daughter said, Dad,
blue Jays had a hundred chances to win, and they
didn't do it.

Speaker 4 (42:52):
And they didn't do it.

Speaker 3 (42:53):
And I will say, you know, the when the Dodgers
went at eight and eighty eight, you know, four games
to one.

Speaker 4 (42:58):
They clearly were not the best team, but they were
for those five games.

Speaker 3 (43:02):
Remember that Mickey Hatcher in left field. I mean, I
wouldn't put that kind of my slow pitted softball team.

Speaker 14 (43:07):
Le sorta had a T shirt made. I was working
for Goodman Sporting because at the time it's called the Stuntman,
and it was Mickey Hatcher, Dave the shortstop, Dave.

Speaker 12 (43:18):
Forget his darn name, an idiot but uh.

Speaker 14 (43:22):
Yeah, darn it, and Dave Anderson, a bunch of scrubs.

Speaker 4 (43:29):
Franklin Stubbs was on that team.

Speaker 3 (43:31):
Oh my god. But anyways, but you know, back to
your point, I, I, you know, I was happy that
they got it to game seven, and then I just
had no expectations, now was I, you know, on pins
and needles the game.

Speaker 4 (43:44):
Of course, I was.

Speaker 14 (43:46):
The same way. And for me Mickey, Rojas and bo
Head to have the role they.

Speaker 10 (43:52):
That game was amazing.

Speaker 14 (43:54):
More importantly, I I just had a call Jay and
and and tell you we're champ man. That was cool.

Speaker 9 (44:00):
With that.

Speaker 2 (44:01):
More importantly, VICI am, I gonna have a quiet night
from you tonight from no text and you know who
you want fire and who you want Ben And then
tomorrow the same thing.

Speaker 14 (44:11):
Tonight's gonna be okay. Tomorrow, Uh Noah's got to break
that record and uh and I gotta shut my mouth.
But I'm still gonna be texting.

Speaker 4 (44:20):
You all day.

Speaker 3 (44:23):
But changed my number. I get my I get text
from from from Brian. He texted me during football games
all the time.

Speaker 14 (44:29):
Yeah, okay, the night and easy night do you I'll
let you go. Plus I'm going dancing.

Speaker 2 (44:35):
Oh yeah, go go baby, man, get off shoes, Go,
get off shoes.

Speaker 12 (44:39):
Hello, okay with the later man, great show.

Speaker 4 (44:44):
Thank you, you're on. Then you're on. Then it was
the run.

Speaker 2 (44:52):
You want these tickets, Yeah, let's do it. Okay, Ron,
let me u uh get you off the air once
we talk and then we'll get your million and number
and you just pick up the tickets.

Speaker 4 (45:01):
Okay.

Speaker 20 (45:03):
So it's good man, great, thanks so much.

Speaker 4 (45:05):
Great? Great?

Speaker 2 (45:05):
Anything else you want to talk about?

Speaker 20 (45:09):
You know, uh, do a basketball tonight. Yeah, I know
it's not a big game, but I'll tell you what.
Everybody should be excited.

Speaker 4 (45:16):
Yeah it's basketball right well, and to me, it's it's
that exactly.

Speaker 3 (45:20):
It's got to be exciting to see what this team
can do, right, to see players like Cole Pete and
stuff like that's going to have to be fun.

Speaker 4 (45:27):
That's what I's going to be.

Speaker 20 (45:29):
And you know, and we're gonna be uh every day
we're gonna be able to see that and see how
much better they get. And uh, those three players that
you talked about earlier that didn't do so well. They're
gonna have great games themselves, right, So right, it's just
a matter of time.

Speaker 2 (45:43):
Yeah, and we need the fans to buy in. Not
that they need to buy in, but the last few
games that have not been attended well at the house,
you know. So even though it's Utah Tech, they need
to show up.

Speaker 9 (45:57):
They do.

Speaker 20 (45:58):
They do, even if it was like no Gallas State,
you know, for God's sake, everybody.

Speaker 2 (46:04):
Yeah, I think they have a pretty good team down
in the Galla State. All right, man, hold on, hold on,
Ron Ray will get a hold of you, or just
hold on and we'll put you away. Hold on, Thanks
for calling. Can you get that?

Speaker 4 (46:18):
Yeah? Thirty three and a half tonight is the line?
What do you think?

Speaker 1 (46:22):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (46:24):
Oh, I would bet you know, I would give the
thirty three that you give it. Yeah, I gave.

Speaker 2 (46:28):
Not that I gave because I don't think you can
bet it. But I told she I'll give him fifty
against em. They were like, whatever it was that was
so bad? Nobody, No, we didn't. We didn't actually bet it.
And who did they know then? The program that got
them that game? Yeah, well you were you were the
point guard I think sometime but seven day.

Speaker 3 (46:45):
You know, I was taller than both the point guards.
All right, yeah, that was crazy.

Speaker 2 (46:50):
Well, like tonight's game, I'm sure it's gonna happen that
he'll be able to go deep in the bench. Get
those teas right see some time. But let me tell
you when it comes to crunch time, you saw the team.

Speaker 4 (47:00):
Yeah, you saw the team was going to play.

Speaker 3 (47:02):
And again we didn't get to talk about it much
with airon, but you know when they were they were
down twelve, you know, in the first half, and I thought,
oh god, don't let this get away, you know, and
then they came back.

Speaker 2 (47:15):
Well you know the one thing too, that you know
how physically they played really well, very physically, which you
don't you don't see that from a un.

Speaker 3 (47:23):
Well that and I made that point and with the
guys that I that I text with during the game,
I said, Arizona is very is being very physical. Whether
this is going to be a thing for the for
the season, but in that particular game, they were in
there and they were pushing people around, and you know,
Cole Pete was doing that, Krevis was doing that, Karchenkov

(47:45):
was doing that. You know, I mean, I I just
thought they they played very physically, and maybe it's been
it's had to be have that evolution of of of
of Tommy's program to be more physical because he saw that,
you know, with the with the Zulus and some of
these guys, that they just weren't physical enough and they
got they got their heads bashed in a few times. Yeah,

(48:06):
and maybe it's it's a it's a next step in
an evolution of his program becoming a much more physical
program in the kind of like you know what you
see with Calvin Samson and some of these other teams.

Speaker 4 (48:17):
Yeah, yeah, once they get to a tougher team. But
Florida was a pretty tough team.

Speaker 3 (48:23):
I mean they you know, Arizona frontline dominated theirs, and
that was a big deal because that's that's right now
what Florida is hanging his hat on. Because they've got
a brand new backcourt in it and then they've got
a good physical front court and Arizona out physical them.

Speaker 4 (48:37):
They really did.

Speaker 2 (48:38):
Yeah, well, they had to to get back in that game,
and then they played really well.

Speaker 4 (48:42):
Yeah, played really well.

Speaker 20 (48:43):
Well.

Speaker 2 (48:43):
Here's another thing, because I've been bringing up to the
point on the show and in the press conference, the
three point shooting. They don't have it, and they kind
of proved it. Yeah, and it's just it's gonna be tough.

Speaker 4 (48:56):
It's gonna but if they can win without it like
they did the other night.

Speaker 2 (48:59):
You know, you have a category at your on your site.
You know when you're doing the stats, a three pointer,
you won't be busy.

Speaker 3 (49:04):
With the Yeah, no, you know, we won't be looking
at that. One thing I did that bothered has been
bothered me a little bit. And because it showed in
the in the exhibition games, is their free throw shooting.

Speaker 4 (49:13):
Still doesn't great? Yeah.

Speaker 2 (49:14):
In fact, that's my concern is a three pointer and
Juan's ish.

Speaker 3 (49:19):
When we got to the end of that game and
in Florida had cut it to three, I thought, god, man,
they're gonna have to make some free throw and then
they did. Yeah, so you know who knows free throw?
I know Tommy doesn't worry a lot about free throw shooting.
He just expects the guys to doing And there's no
Lumar Balo on the team right now, so I think
they'll be okay, but you know they're look and that

(49:39):
was the thing about the game on Monday, Steve There
were still a bunch of things.

Speaker 4 (49:43):
He didn't do all that well. No, and yet they
won that game.

Speaker 2 (49:46):
Yeah, yeah, we don't know how good Florida is. So
there's that they it was a sixty forty split. I
think in terms of the crowd, there's you know, no advantage.
There a lot of fun BYU brought the house.

Speaker 4 (49:58):
Yeah, so you know.

Speaker 3 (49:59):
We'll going to Vegas.

Speaker 4 (50:02):
And how many times you've been in love? In love?
Just say once you're married?

Speaker 2 (50:08):
No, no, no, no before come on, it's like you
bet your girlfriend if you're talking.

Speaker 3 (50:13):
Like real love, like love love, like wife love, you know, like.

Speaker 4 (50:19):
Two or three.

Speaker 2 (50:20):
Okay, so the first time you say, oh god, look
that's Florida, that's you way beat in Florida. That first
ter you're you're giddy, and then guess what.

Speaker 4 (50:28):
Over time and then and then then you meet her
parents and you know.

Speaker 2 (50:33):
There is a thirty game parents, the thirty games of
meeting the parents.

Speaker 3 (50:38):
You don't know what's I had to say at least
twice because I've been married twice and I think there
was one more back there somewhere.

Speaker 4 (50:43):
But I think I'm still mad at her.

Speaker 2 (50:45):
But you understand my point. You wouldn't.

Speaker 4 (50:50):
You win the game, you were like, she broke up
with me, man, I get it again.

Speaker 2 (50:54):
Well, this one's gonna break up everyone. I was gonna lose, right,
They're not gonna play this well all the time. And
I'm just trying to pret the craziness. Yeah you you
you fell in love with this team right away. Eventually
things change.

Speaker 4 (51:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (51:06):
And it's funny because I'm sitting here and I'm like,
I want Arizona fans to get giddy about football, but
yet I'm trying to keep UH fans from getting giddy
about basketball and kind of hold hold back a little bit.

Speaker 4 (51:19):
Let's not let's not get overboard here. You know.

Speaker 2 (51:21):
We gotta go, Yeah, we gotta go. We'll come back
on the other the side. We have breaking news. Run
hold on right, yep, Okay, cool

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
