It's okay, it's Friday.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
It's a good way to sound, you know.
Speaker 5 (00:51):
I like it.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Of course he sounds bitter. He's in the house, so
anywhere down three to two and.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
It's all bad.
Speaker 6 (01:00):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
You know I did that.
Speaker 7 (01:02):
I decided to agree to do Friday afternoons the end
of the week. I'll be kind of you know, you

down for the weekend and stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
It's stressful. I'm stressed. I'm stressed. Press I got you know,
I got the gear going.
Speaker 7 (01:19):
Man, I'm gonna where I'm I'm I'm taking, you know,
going with my kid, my kid, my grandson, you know,
trick or treating. So I'm going as a Dodger fan.
You know, it's been you know, okay, there's been five games.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
I've been able to sit down and watch too because
because the stuff going on. You know, my my house
last weekend was was a family uh a weekend of
family events.
Speaker 7 (01:46):
My my wife's uncle, who's a who's a Catholic priest,
was having his eightieth birthday. So people came in from
all over the country to our house. We had we
had dinners boats Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in our backyard.
Now we had the TV out there, but no volume.
Is just watching the games and then tonight I'm going
trick or treat.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
Are you sure he used holy water on you?
Speaker 7 (02:05):
I you know there you work. Yeah, it's not it's not.
And uh and so you know I sat I actually
sat down. I watched well oh and and then Game three.
You know, I was at the basketball game and I
did get to see nine innings because by the time
I got on the still played another nine innings. So
I just haven't been able to see any of the
any of the games.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Well, tonight, you'll have plenty of time.
Speaker 7 (02:25):
Well, no, I'm trick or treat, but I'll be taking
I'll do people trick or treat now eight.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
O'clock or so, right after dark. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know,
going on one time, it's gonna be over. I got
to race home, cook some dinner. We're gonna eat and
go and uh.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
I'm gonna make a great wife one day someday, man,
some day, Okay, going as a toucher.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
Spooky, it's pretty scary, man, spooky bets I may.
Speaker 7 (02:52):
I might throw a jersey over the top of this
right here, the Toronto jersey.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
I don't have a Toronto jersey.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Well, welcome to the show A lot another weekend of football.
We've been talking about how big the game is. That
tomorrow's game is I must win. I must win. Sure,
oh you agree, because.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
If they don't win Saturday, I don't know how they
get to six wins, right, and how much heat do
you think he'll take He's already under a lot of heat.
Speaker 7 (03:23):
Okay, explain just the scuttle you hear. Now, everybody knows
my son works in the nathelect department. This is not
where this is coming from. No, just people that I
talked to around But yeah, people who are or me
you know, no people in the.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Program, no boosters and the Eddie idea.
Speaker 7 (03:39):
There's a lot of discussion that even six wins isn't
gonna be enough.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Well see they're not getting there great.
Speaker 7 (03:46):
And and and the thing and and the thing of
it is it's they say, well, well you know that
that's improvement, that's not horrible.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
It's butts and seats. People aren't going to the games
and and and there.
Speaker 7 (03:57):
People just don't Brent Brannan is not Its exciting the
fan base, well, not even whether he's a sales guy.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
No, no, you need to.
Speaker 7 (04:06):
There's just not people who feel like Brent Brandan enough,
people who feel like Brent Brandan is the guy. There's
so many people waiting to see and Okay, if he
goes right, if he goes off and win, and let's
say he finishes eight and four, which it's not the
day that's a that's a that's.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
A huge stretch. Part of it's going to be who
came to the games?
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Right?
Speaker 3 (04:28):
You got one thirty game?
Speaker 7 (04:29):
Next Saturday should be a beautiful day, beautiful November Day homecoming.
If there's thirty five thousand people in there desiree read friends,
so it almost.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Doesn't have a choice. Wow.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
So the first time hearing this type of of down
or well, Steve, I don't disagree with it.
Speaker 8 (04:48):
You know.
Speaker 7 (04:49):
I had this huge argument with my brother on on
which brother Rick on Wednesday, because he's saying, what the
hell you? Why are we talking about him not making it?
If he's improving, they're better than last year, clearly is
do you believe that?
Speaker 3 (05:04):
I think they're better. I think they're better. I don't know.
They haven't played.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
I had this discussion yesterday with the Damian Elietta and
I'm the fool in the room, right and I'm okay
with that. I don't know if they are, Jay, But
that's for another time, Steve.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Look at their three losses.
Speaker 7 (05:18):
Yeah, but two losses two teams that are six and one,
there's still losses, and a team that's seven and zero
even worse.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
They're the worse the by U game.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Because I get it, I get it, I get it.
Speaker 7 (05:29):
But the point, the point of it is they are
better those games that those three games they would have
lost by forty points last year to those teams. That's
the point I'm making. They're better, and I get that point.
They're better, but they're not winning enough, right.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
And they're okay, And that hasn't translated to wins.
Speaker 7 (05:47):
I get that, and and that's the point, and the
and the Arizona fan wants to see I win.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
We know those know, we know that. You got a
call right away. Hello, you're on the air and I
on the ball.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Who's this?
Speaker 5 (06:00):
Hey, Steve, this is done?
Speaker 3 (06:01):
Don how much that will.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
H We got like eleven minutes to the.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
First segment, like seven okay, So go.
Speaker 5 (06:08):
Ahead, okay, I got I want to ask Jay's opinion
on does he remember when during Dick Tomy's tenure and
we had some good attending seasons during that time. Half
the city didn't like.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
Him, you were correct, but done here alf.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
The city didn't like him, but he won. And what
it's going to take. And I mentioned I said this
in to Steve, and I was I I think I
had said that. I wish you were in studio that
day too, because I think he's got to he's got
to get to a Bowl game this year, and he's
got to start off next year right before the people
will come.
Speaker 7 (06:49):
Okay, wait, wait, you got right there, stop right there,
stop right there, stop right there there, four and one
b YU comes to town, and who came of the game. Nobody.
Here's the that's the problem. That's the big difference between
now and twenty years ago Tommy was here is that
the pressure to put people in the seats is bigger
(07:12):
than ever.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
I don't disagree with that to his thing, but Tucson
is still the same city. You could get you there
has to be an astro, not because the weather was horrible.
I'm not trying to get it make it better for him, but.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
I get it.
Speaker 7 (07:24):
But still yeah, okay, but the point being done that
the the what's what's impacting all this is different from
what it was twenty thirty years ago. You gotta have
butts in seats. You can't wait for them to show up.
They have to be showing up right now. And if
they have thirty thousand people, thirty to thirty five thousand
(07:45):
at this one thirty game next Saturday. It's kind of
to an extreme. It's kind of like the Kevin Kevin
Sumlin argument was, if they didn't fire him when they did,
who was going to be in the state in the
next year. We're we're in a similar situation, even though
Brent Brennan isn't doing as near as bad a job
as Kevin Ston.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
Okay, go done, No, I agree, but I still think
that Tucson is still Tucson. You could get you could
get the hottest young offensive coordinator in the country, which
most of Tucson would not know, and they would not go.
It's still the same thing. I hate to agree with
Steve on this.
Speaker 6 (08:26):
We don't show.
Speaker 5 (08:28):
We don't show until until we're a consistent winner. And
that's why I say, you know, Desert is going to
have to, you know, keep her gunning her. She's gonna
have to keep her knife in her pocket until the
middle of next year, at least, you know, she's still
she If she wanted to get out, she could have
gone out at the end of last year, which would
(08:50):
have been stupid because we'd beat three years behind again.
And I don't think we're three years behind now. So
I think we're only a year away because because of
the way that they've played this year, because Steve's been
asking everybody, how can you tell that they've improved well?
Last year they were getting blown out.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
They're not this year. Here, here's the thing, and.
Speaker 5 (09:11):
They're not this year and they're fighting to the end.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Here's the thing.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
I want to I want to be clear on this.
Speaker 7 (09:15):
Okay, I don't agree with this, and in terms of that,
this is the right road. I think you need to
give Brent Brennan at least another year. I don't think
to be fair. To be fair, I don't think he
should be fired at the end of this year if
he goes six and six and gets in a Bowl game.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
But but regardless of the regards, regardless of.
Speaker 7 (09:34):
What I think, regards of the tendency right regard, but
no matter what I think, I'm not the one that
gets to make that call. And if Desiree thinks that
there's somebody out there who can energize this, that's the key,
she will go get that person the key. That's the key,
that's a hundred percent the key. That's my And that's
my point. It's not it's not done. You or I
would wouldn't pull this trigger, but we're not the ones
(09:57):
who have the trigger in our hand.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
Yeah, no, I agree, I agree with that, but I
just don't think that. You know, if if you get
somebody in here that that that excites the fan base
and everybody starts showing up.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
How long are they going to be here?
Speaker 2 (10:13):
Well, every level, it is so well right now? Who
would be that guy? That's the bullet too.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
And that's the thing too.
Speaker 7 (10:22):
If Desiree doesn't think there's out there somebody out there better, if.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
She does already know the person, she's not gonna do it.
Speaker 7 (10:29):
But she will do it if she already knows there's
somebody out there who she thinks can do this job
better than Brent Brannan. There may not be anybody out
there for all we know, but I guarantee you I
don't know this, but if she's thinking about this, she.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
Probably she'd better be looking already. She better have found
somebody a good ad does that well.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
And and it better not be somebody that's already out
of a job, because none of those guys are going
to be They're not going to be in Tucson.
Speaker 7 (10:59):
Long about Brian Kelly, Frank Kelly James Franklin.
Speaker 5 (11:08):
We if they if well, Franklin.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Would be a good hire.
Speaker 5 (11:12):
The only thing is he's not. He wouldn't be in
Tucson long. But if you if she, if she hired,
if she hires Brian Kelly, and I would say that
she's probably the next a d for a s U
to make those type of hires, because that's a that's.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
An a s U hire right there.
Speaker 5 (11:32):
If Dillingham goes and takes another job, which would be
dumb for him, Brian Kelly is going to be the
next coach at a s U.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
You what, that would be interesting.
Speaker 5 (11:41):
Because they they always pooped the bed on that.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Well, Dillingham is not going to be the hot commodity
because they're not going to win any more games. Yeah,
but this is a I feel it's a crappy discussion
to be having, but you kin't have to have it.
It's all speculative.
Speaker 7 (11:59):
But when you when you when you think of all
the things that are impacting this, you know, Desiree's got
you know they got they got to fill the stadium
because they need the money. She didn't hire Brent Brandon.
You know, the fan base hasn't gotten behind Brandon sure
all the way dating back to people were pissed off
because he was wearing lays at the first you know,
first few at the game.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
Stuff like that. That's impacting all of that.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Thanks for calling real quick, because we're gonna have to
take a break here in a second. Thanks for calling
us always. So let me say, yeah, the crowd is
is him, but not him because ticson you who came
into to a place that doesn't care, Yeah, or is
apathy whatever, He's not the personality.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
He's got a lot of strikes already. Yeah he does.
Speaker 7 (12:37):
I don't know how he can improve. I don't know
by by winning games. He's got to win a bunch
of games.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Let me tell you something. If they lose tomorrow, next week,
good luck.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
You're gonna be the only.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
Thing I know. I'm Steve, I know, and I hate
our fans for that, and just what you've known those
fans all your life?
Speaker 7 (12:55):
Yeah, well but see, but there have been times, Steve,
when you know, did you see Hanson's art? And here
right stoops average fifty thousand every year that he was here.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
Oh you had that name, He had that name. Sometimes
they had the team, but but.
Speaker 7 (13:08):
They had they had some good teams and then and
it was exciting and it was fun, you know. But
but you know, these last few even you know Jed's
twenty twenty three year, people didn't show up to a
game until the last one until yeah, right, you the
Utah game was you know, that was that was the
biggest crowd of the year up until that point, you know,
because you know they lost to Mississippi State.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
Just all these things that happened. Well, here's the thing.
You're right.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
If she doesn't have the person she has in mind,
she's not gonna pull it off. And who would be
that person to come in? That's not somebody that's gonna
be a Rich Rodriguez and say I'm going to kill
it here.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
And then go and then go. I'd be okay with that.
We gotta go, just come and kill who's the first? Yes,
we got, Oh, we got Brian Howell. I got some
questions for buddy for Colorado hook yep.

Speaker 2 (18:31):
And Brian, Brian Hell from Colorado. Brian, how you doing?
I'm good. How you guys doing? We're doing fine. One
of the last times we talked to you is how
the hell are you doing this job? But you've got it,
You've got it made now or you know exactly what's
going on. How how's that beat going for you?
Speaker 6 (18:48):
Hey, it's going well. It's it's nice and calm around
all these days, not a lot of camera and a
lot of celebrities. It's just don't want football sounds.
Speaker 7 (18:58):
Well, it's certainly you know after the all the who
have those first couple of years under under Dian.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
But how's he doing?
Speaker 7 (19:04):
You know, we all we know about his health situation
and stuff like that, and his name is getting kicked
around for some of these jobs that are opening up.
Speaker 3 (19:11):
You know, how what what's uh? What's his focus right now?
Speaker 6 (19:16):
His focus is on this team and just trying to
get them going. And you know, he's he's the most
confident guy I've ever been around, but he's also you know,
maybe the most competitive, and you know it's eating at
him that they're not playing good football, and not just
against Utah, which was a disaster, but I mean they've
let a lot of games get away this year and
(19:36):
so they really underachieved a lot of this season and
he's trying to get that turned around and gets them going.
And you know, he talked about his health and things
like that, and that's really where his priority is. It's
just they're trying to win games to get to a
bowl game.
Speaker 3 (19:51):
You talked about the Utah game last week. Is this
team any good? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (19:57):
I think they are. Last week was not how they
played all year. I mean, they were horrible last week
and it was way too reminiscent of what I had
seen before coach Prime got here, you know, too many times.
But you know, this is a team that the game
before that beat Iowa State, which was number twenty two
at the time, and the two weeks before that, I
(20:17):
had fourteen leads on bo y U and TCU before
losing those games late. And so you know, they were
they were tied with Georgia Tech with two minutes less
in the fourth quarter and lost that game. So yeah,
they're a solid team that they just weren't finishing early
in the year. Finally finished against Iowa State and then
I have no idea what happened in Salt Lake City.
(20:38):
But if they can get back to what they were
before Salt Lake City, they'll be okay and they can
win some games.
Speaker 7 (20:44):
Well, well, let's ask you what what are they right,
I mean know with with you know, with gone with
and with Travis Hernter.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
What's their identity? What have they been this season?
Speaker 6 (20:54):
Yeah, there's no real identity. But what they are is
they're an average football team. Last week they were surely not.
But I mean they're an average football team that they
are just good enough at times to potentially beat you.
They're just bad enough at times to lose a game. So,
(21:15):
you know, I think I thought coming into season they
were a seven and five team. I think they're stealing
this play is probably six and six, which is, you know, mediocre. Obviously,
that's the definition of it right in the middle, right,
and that's kind of where they are. I Mean, I
think there's seasons on the break a little bit. If
they lose this on Saturday, I have to honestly see
them not winning again because they could kind of crumble internally.
(21:37):
But if they went on Saturday, I could see them
going on a little bit of a run, winning three
in a row to get to that bowl game. So
I just think they're a mediocre football team that we
don't know where they're going to go from there.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
Yeah, I'm not going to be DeBie Downer. What it's
gonna sound Jay, you put what Brian just said. Put
Arizona's there. It sounds like Arizona. The records different because
Arizona's four and three.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
But you're right.
Speaker 7 (21:58):
I mean, you said Arizona has played well enough to
beat really good teams, but as you said, they haven't finished.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
Yeah, you know now they have, they haven't.
Speaker 7 (22:08):
Well I always stay kind of blew them out, but strictly,
you know, turnovers, you know, stat wise and stuff like that.
It was a very even game. But you know, they
just turned the ball over and they've kind of fixed that.
But they haven't they haven't won. But you're right, very
two teams on a similar course, where Arizona's.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
Just trying to get to a bowl game.
Speaker 7 (22:25):
And trying to you know, not be mediocre, which they
kind of have been so far.
Speaker 6 (22:32):
Yeah, and that's kind of what we've talked about this week,
you know over here as we previous this game, is
that both these teams profile the same, and you're right,
I mean, itzon those record it's different. But both of
them have basically a blowout loss in the road. Both
of them had a fourteen point leading as BUYU that
they coughed up late. You know, they had the Arizona
had the late Loskins Houston, so you had the late
(22:54):
Loskins Georgia Tech and one against you know, the TCU
game was a fourteen point game, but it was really
a tight game and TCUs throw a touchdown passing the
final seconds to pad that. But yeah, there's they're very
similar teams. And that's where I think, if I see
you's mind is right, they can win this game tomorrow.
And you know, kind of keep back on track a
(23:15):
little bit. I know that book teams and talking to
you know, an Arizona rider this week is he's like, yeah,
Arizona should win this game. Like, yeah, Collins, I speaking
the same thing. You know, we should beat you, right, Yeah,
that should make this a competitive, good football.
Speaker 3 (23:31):
Game, no question.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
Are you surprised that Arizona is a four point favorite?
Speaker 6 (23:36):
No, just off of last week? You know, I think
I had a lot of maybe performed better and lost
like they had been, you know, lose by ten or whatever.
I think that line might be different. But the fact
that they totally got their blow their George blown off,
and and were inept in every aspect, I mean, that
doesn't surprise me. I think Arizona's probably been a team
(24:00):
throughout this season, but they're similar.
Speaker 7 (24:02):
Any thoughts on why that happened last week? I mean
what I mean? I tell yeah, I mean I turned
on the TV and they were down forty in the
first half, right, I mean, I'm like, what the hell
happened to these guys?
Speaker 3 (24:13):
I mean, that happens to really bad teams.
Speaker 7 (24:16):
It doesn't happen to teams that are have got who
are Colorado or Arizona? And so what what went wrong
on Saturday?
Speaker 6 (24:24):
Yeah? Well, I think it was kind of a collection
of things. That's a lot of times what happens in
those blowouts. Just think snowball a little bit. But I
think one thing that hurts you is the fact that
Utah lost that tough oney is by either week before.
I think Utah probably took out a lot of anger
in that game. They blitzed Cayden Salter almost every play.
(24:45):
The Buffs had some discipline stuff. I mean they were
coming off of a bye and the top two receivers
both were late or missed the meeting coming out of
the buy, so both were suspended. You know, Joseph Williams
who leaves them in catches, did not play. I see
was ben a. Mario Miller was benched for the first half.
So Kayan Salton doesn't have his top two weapons in
(25:05):
the first half of that game, and he just had
no shot. I mean, he went through for thirty seven
yards and most of his incompletions were throwing the ball
away because he was running for his life. And the
offensive line has been decent this year, but they were
horrible against Utah, and I think all of that just
kind of snowballed, and it just once she got down,
(25:28):
you know, seven nothing right away, and then it was
seven to nothing and then the bus defense gets a
three and out. Then they get a second three and out,
but Utah does a fake punt and converts it. That's
a backbreaker and then next thing, you know, it's only
it's ten to nothing, and then seventeen and it's just
kind of snowballed.
Speaker 2 (25:46):
Two questions, because Dion changed since you first covered him,
you know, because we were on the phone with you
a lot that first year, right and all the things
that were going. Has he changed it on how he's
coaching given whatever circumstances.
Speaker 3 (25:58):
And two did you make a pretty.
Speaker 6 (26:02):
Yeah, I don't think he's changed a lot. I mean,
I think, like everybody, he's probably getting better at his craft.
And you know, if he's not getting better, that's a problem.
You know, some some fans will stay so terrible at
game management and things like that. But I think he's
learning as he goes along because that's what coaches do.
And so, but I think who he is has not changed. Uh.
(26:23):
And if he doesn't have the Suns around, so maybe
there's a little less confidence when you don't have Shdor
and Travis out there. But I don't think he's changed.
And a prediction prediction for this game, I think Colorado
gets off the deck and wins this game. And if
this game was in Tucson, I would give the Arizona
(26:43):
because it's in Boulder. I give it to Colorado because
of what we talked about that I think these two
teams are so similar that you know, it's a coin
flip game to me. And and you know, I'm going
to give the edge of the home team in this one.
It's supposed to be nice. I think it's supposed to
be like sixty.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
All right, Okay, so that's that won't be a factor.
Speaker 6 (27:03):
Let me know that won't be a factor. And that's
helping some late some late ticket sales.
Speaker 3 (27:08):
People are still people are still going.
Speaker 6 (27:11):
Yeah, you know, we'll see. You know, it's there's potential
for this to be the lowest attended game in the
Coach Fime era, But depends on how ticket sales go
over the next twenty four hours. I mean, they're kind
of on that verge and it won't be a sellout.
But you know, there's about when I asked for an
update a little bit ago, there's some over three thousand
tickets left, so you know, there's Colin was funny the
(27:35):
fans here kind of depends on what's going on that day. Uh,
And you know, if it's a really nice datam ow,
there could be a really good walk up crowd.
Speaker 7 (27:42):
Yeah, so let me ask you some more about Dion
because you know, again all the stuff with his health
and and we know how he's got to manage, you know,
during the game and stuff like that. But yeah, his
his name is being mentioned that you know, some of
the jobs, particularly U C l A.
Speaker 3 (27:58):
And then there's some people saying he's not gonna.
Speaker 7 (28:00):
Coach anymore after this just because of his health and
just the hassles that come with it.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
What are your thoughts on where he is next year?
Speaker 6 (28:08):
Yeah, I think his name only comes up because he's
the unstandards. I don't think there's any legitimacy to him
being in Canada anywhere else. And honestly, I think that
the result of this season at this point would kind
of take him out of the running for teams might
maybe want in him. But I think he's either coaching
in Colorado or retired right. I really don't believe he
(28:32):
will coach another college football team after leaves Boulder, whether
that's in December or whether that's five years from now,
ten years from now. I think this is his last
coaching job. You just he is fifty eight, with he's
had some serious health issues and I know he loves
coaching and he loves doing here where he's got a
lot of he's got free reign to do a lot
(28:56):
that's hard to give up. So I don't know how
long he'll be here, but think that this is the
last pitching job and want when he wants to, he'll
do often make the same money or more doing TV.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
What's the fan base? They still love him? Give me
one hundred percent? How many people love him?
Speaker 6 (29:13):
There was one people that London before sut Lake City.
There's a little less right now. You know, Colorao sports
fans are interesting because it's it's always been. They love
the Broncos and then whoever wins, you know, and you
know they'll show up if you win. They don't if
you don't win. And I think for the most part
(29:33):
of the fan base likes him. But certainly when the
winds aren't coming, everybody gets a little restless, right And
you know, you had some people obviously last week with
all the big name of firings, some people saying maybe
it's time to move on from beyond. They're not going
to do that.
Speaker 3 (29:48):
Colors third year, right, well.
Speaker 6 (29:51):
Yeah, third year, and you know they don't have thirty
three million dollars. I guarantee that to buy him out.
They're not moving on from him. I think for the
most part, the fan base stills behind him. If they
win some game Church coming up, they're really gonna like him.
Speaker 7 (30:05):
Well A big piece of this too. Those Also, how's
the media with him? And how is he with me?
Does that media like him, not like him? Indifferent? I mean,
how how is he being treated and how is he
treating the media?
Speaker 6 (30:17):
Well? I can me for myself. I like the guy,
you know, he you know, I'm not sure how he
feels about me. I don't think we break bread anytimes,
and you know, anything like that. But you know, I
respect him and I think that he's doing a good job.
And I'll say this, I think I've told you this before,
but he's the best post lost coach I've ever covered
(30:40):
any sport. Like I was told when he was higher
that well, be careful when he doesn't win, because he
won't even talk. He's not only talked after the loss,
but there's times that he'll when the sid's like all right,
that's good, he'll say, no, let's keep going. You know.
He'll answer every single question after a loss. Even last
week he was you know, you can tell he was
biting his tongue little bit and he said, you know what,
(31:01):
he goes. I like you guys, I respect you some.
I'm trying to be as cordial as I can, you know. Yeah,
so he's pretty good with us, and I can't complain.
You know, he's uh, he's better to deal with than
a lot of coaches in my opinion.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
Well that's good to hear. Let me ask you, so
you talked to Justin, probably the beat writer here. He
couldn't convince you that Arizona was not going to win,
or he's saying they're gonna win. I'm assuming, right, Well,
it wasn't Justin.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
Was somebody else.
Speaker 6 (31:26):
But you know Justin, I've talked him this week, I
talked to him last week. But he's probably convinced Arizona win.
But that's the way it should be, right. I think
that if you cover Arizona, you probably think this is
a game for Arizona win. If you cover Colorado, you're
probably thinking this is a game for Colorado to win.
So you know, to me, I'm convinced Carla was gonna win.
(31:48):
But we'll see.
Speaker 3 (31:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
No, No, That's why I asked because I think Arizona
played Kansas State and we talked to a beat writer
there and they said this team sucks, and you never
you never hear that from a team discovered by the media.
Speaker 3 (32:02):
Oh, that's not entirely true. It's very rare. I covered
some teams that sucked.
Speaker 2 (32:06):
But would you say that publicly.
Speaker 3 (32:08):
Well, not to the college.
Speaker 6 (32:12):
Go ahead, bro, I wouldn't have said that about Colorado
in twenty twenty two, that's for sure. And you know
they certainly were terrible last week. I don't think this
is a I don't think this is the college team
that sucks. I think they had a really bad game
on Saturday, and they're very capable of winning the next
three or four games.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
Okay, did you have a pointspread? Did you come up
with a score or just a prediction?
Speaker 6 (32:33):
I think it's called I'm gonna go twenty seven to twenty.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
Four, twenty seven twenty four. Okay, that makes total sense. Right,
We'll see what happens. Brian, as always, thank you very much.
Speaker 6 (32:42):
Bet, thanks that.
Speaker 3 (32:43):
I appreciate you, appreciate you. Let's go to j real quick,
does it. What do you think now about the.
Speaker 7 (32:49):
Game, Well, of course, I mean I would expect him
to say, you know, it's a toss up.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
Steve did when he was wrangling enough, give me the score,
give me the That's why I asked you schedule, yeah,
and give me the results, just because.
Speaker 4 (32:58):
Okay, started out this season at home, losing to Georgia
Tech twenty seven to twenty.
Speaker 3 (33:02):
Okay, So that's a heck of a good coach.
Speaker 7 (33:04):
And I watched a lot of that game because I
think I had Georgia Tech in that game.
Speaker 2 (33:08):
Okay, So that's a good game, playing close against Okay, go.
Speaker 4 (33:10):
Ahead seven to thirty one against Delaware.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
Okay, that's that's a Weaver State game.
Speaker 4 (33:17):
Houston lost to Houston thirty six to twenty in Houston,
and that was before we.
Speaker 7 (33:20):
Knew Houston was any good. We thought Houston was not
going to be any good. Okay, Okay, So but to
be a good.
Speaker 4 (33:25):
Team twenty to thirty seven against Wyoming at home.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
They win, yes, Okay, so that's your Hawaii game.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (33:33):
Lost to b YU twenty four to twenty one at.
Speaker 3 (33:35):
Home, same circumstances. They lead, and then they gave it.
Speaker 4 (33:37):
Up, lost to TCU thirty five to twenty one in TCU.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
Okay, Yes, a non descript game.
Speaker 4 (33:45):
Yeah, Colorado, they beat Iowa. Stay yeah, sorry beat Iowa?
Speaker 3 (33:49):
Okay, did I give you? Yeah? Well yeah, yeah, okay,
and then they lost fifty So to.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
Me, it's almost we talked about mirror, but to me,
that's all better is what they've done compared to Arizona.
Speaker 7 (34:02):
But Arizona hasn't been beaten fifty three to seven either. No,
but Arizona has not looked so bad as to get
beat like that. They've been They've been in every game
to the very end.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
So this is a game where one team is going
to go one way or the other. In a loss,
the loser.
Speaker 3 (34:19):
Is going to have a bad rest of the year.
I totally agree, right, you know.
Speaker 7 (34:24):
So the question is, you know, does Arizona have the
wherewithal to go up there on the road, which they
haven't played well on the road, Brent Brannan to go
up there and win a game? Are they going to
get Are they going to be pissed off at at
how they've lost these last couple of games and go
up there and change that. I mean, they they very
you know, they very well could have beaten Houston on
the road and then just didn't, and and so but
(34:47):
you know, again, we've seen Houston as a damn good
team and BYU is one of the you know, BYU
is a playoff team, and so you know, I I
take I put more stock into the fact that they've
played some good teams could have beaten them, didn't, but
could have played well enough to give themselves a.
Speaker 3 (35:08):
Chance to win.
Speaker 7 (35:09):
So I think, you know, they'll they'll be in this
game to the very end, maybe and then maybe they
also win.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
I don't know. Okay, let me let if you.
Speaker 7 (35:19):
Put a knife to my throat, i'd say take the
knife away. I'm not saying one one way or the other.
You know, you're not giving points on this one. Oh
absolutely not No, because it could it should be like
a one point game, because it could be either way. Yeah,
I wouldn't touch this game. Yeah no, of course. Okay,

about an hour.
Speaker 3 (39:57):
You're ant like one picks. I've always liked your picks.
Speaker 7 (40:00):
Have you noticed that every time you and I have
the same a game that it loses?
Speaker 3 (40:06):
I am the first to notice that, what are you
talking about? Who was it last week? We had? We do?
I think we had the winner. We had the lock.
Speaker 7 (40:13):
Oh well he had to spatch because we both had Vanderbilt.
If there was a game that you and I had
the same no two weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (40:18):
That's what.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
So there's the we're just here solving the world's problems
and who you aready should hire and not hire, and
blah blah blah. If if it's way way ahead of.
Speaker 3 (40:29):
Well it is.
Speaker 7 (40:30):
There's a lot of football left to be played. They
got to play those games and then you see what
were what happens at the end? I think one a
lot of it will be start to get figured out
if they win.
Speaker 3 (40:40):
What happens tomorrow in Colorado?
Speaker 7 (40:42):
Then the second one is what happens a week from
Saturday with the homecoming game here one thirty in the afternoon,
Does anybody come to the game.
Speaker 3 (40:48):
Well, here's the thing.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
If they win tomorrow, you'll see more fans than you
would see if they lost. Right, And you're talking thousands, right,
you're talking thousands, And that's okay. Thirty afternoon should.
Speaker 3 (40:59):
Be November Holy cow.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
Ideally perfect, But it's not perfect here. Everything that that
Brian said is it's Tucson just moving from Boulder. Yeah,
fan base, you gotta win. You know this, You know
this better than me because you've been here forever and
it's been that way since.
Speaker 3 (41:16):
It's always been that way.
Speaker 2 (41:17):
Yeah, and we remember that call we got from Bill
long time ago. We were too hard on the fans. No,
we're not We're not there, they're idiots. Okay, check my
fans out of your mouth.
Speaker 6 (41:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (41:34):
It's a tough call, man, because even like I remember,
I went to the b YU game with one of
my friends and he was like, this is why people
don't show up. Like after the game we're leaving and stuff.
It's like, this is why people don't show up because
it's disappointment. Yeah, it's disappointment. They'll get closed to make
you think you can win, and then it just lets
you down in the.
Speaker 7 (41:48):
End, you know, because as you know, I mean, Dick
told me it was a good friend of mine. We
played baseball together. We're good, We're I mean, we were
actually good personal friends. And I used to get a
headache at at games when I would see the Tendons,
I'd get a headache from just being so mad at
the fans that this this was a program.
Speaker 3 (42:06):
It was a good program. It was clean. They won games.
Speaker 7 (42:09):
They didn't you know, they didn't get to the Rose Bowl,
but they were they were good and tough every single year.
And you still couldn't get fans to come out to
the game.
Speaker 8 (42:17):
Did you?
Speaker 3 (42:18):
And he used to piss me off.
Speaker 2 (42:19):
I really I would just get.
Speaker 3 (42:20):
Tense to.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
His thoughts on the Rose Bowl and is it Are
they capable of getting there?
Speaker 3 (42:25):
No, because I didn't want to get punched in the face.
Speaker 7 (42:29):
Because no, he's well, no, there's a rule.
Speaker 2 (42:34):
This was a rule. I mean, it was his rule
because of baseball.
Speaker 7 (42:36):
When we when we played baseball together and stuff, he said,
we're not talking about football. But the one time I did,
I asked him for a pass. And that was after
the ninety four season, because remember ninety three they had
gone ten and to beat Miami in the roads in
the Feest Bowl, and then ninety four they won eight four,
(42:58):
but they had everybody back from the year before, and.
Speaker 3 (43:01):
And you know were still no no, no, no, no. That
was in ninety nine.
Speaker 7 (43:05):
But there was a they lost a game at Oregon,
uh where had on a bad pass interference call lose
the game on a fieldgal.
Speaker 3 (43:13):
Had they won that game, they had been in the
Rose Bowl.
Speaker 7 (43:15):
And but they went they went eight and four and
went to the Freedom Bowl and then lost in the
Freedom Bowl.
Speaker 3 (43:21):
And so I said, what I remember at one of
the games that I saw.
Speaker 7 (43:24):
He was like, can I get a pass on the whole,
you know, on the whole, not talking about football thing.
Speaker 3 (43:29):
What do you want?
Speaker 7 (43:29):
I said, what happened to which to the ninety four game?
What what happened? What happened to that team who they
played the first game George Remember they opened to Georgia Tech. Okay,
it was that. It was the Desert swarms, the heided
Desert from Teddy Bruski. All those guys were there. They went,
like I said, they went eight and four, but they
were an eight and three and then lost lost to
(43:50):
Utah in the Utah had under one hundred yards total
offense and won the game. Anyways, I said, what happened?
And he said, very simple. We lost that game in
the summer. They lost it in the summer of nineteen
ninety four. The guys came back. They didn't do the
work that they did before the ninety three season. They
just didn't do the work. I could tell they weren't
(44:12):
doing the work. It was a different mindset they were.
You know, that that was the that was you know.
And he said, that's when we lost it. He said,
we lost that seaton.
Speaker 3 (44:21):
He said and he said, mind you we wentnt em three.
Speaker 7 (44:24):
Yeah, it wasn't a horrible year, no, but it wasn't
the season we were hoping.
Speaker 3 (44:28):
To have that we could have had with the guys
we had.
Speaker 2 (44:30):
Let me tell you this, and Ray, you're you're kind
of new to this, and so is Kenzie.
Speaker 3 (44:34):
I've been here a while doing schorice. Isn't that Arizona Athletics.
Speaker 2 (44:37):
Yeah, you you rave and you kill it the year
before and then you come back you're full of you know,
you're strut your your bubble and then you.
Speaker 3 (44:45):
Shoop the bin. Yep.
Speaker 7 (44:46):
Well that well, that team, that team was the was
the you know, Sports illustrated covered thing.
Speaker 3 (44:51):
Yeah, that's that's why. That's why.
Speaker 7 (44:52):
Yeah, yeah, right, And but that that was when they
opened against Penn State. That was that ninety nine. That
was after the twelve and one season. I thought that
was earlier that that. That's the same team. They didn't
even hit that, right, that was the time. That was
the twelve and one team. Keith Smith or Chie Jenkins,
all those guys and they got they got their you know.
Speaker 3 (45:10):
Get up against expectations.
Speaker 2 (45:12):
And who did.
Speaker 3 (45:13):
I talk to about it?
Speaker 2 (45:14):
It was.
Speaker 7 (45:17):
Should have played that game I don't know who he remember,
he said, he said, I don't know whose.
Speaker 3 (45:21):
Idea was to play that game. We weren't going to
be that good, you know.
Speaker 7 (45:25):
But no, but the ninety four was, you know again
the Sports Illustrated cover though, But he said, we lost it.
Speaker 3 (45:32):
That season was lost in the summer, and and and that,
and that's that's what happened.
Speaker 2 (45:36):
That's very it does. It happens here a lot. Yeah, man,
you fans have gotten you know, I'm surprised you're still alive. Ticker,
You're ticker taking a lot of beatings.
Speaker 3 (45:48):
Well that makes my heart is strong.
Speaker 7 (45:51):
My heart is strong. It's been worked out all these years.
All right, you've never had a heart. Well it's black.
Speaker 2 (46:00):
You don't smoke.
Speaker 3 (46:02):
I used to do, you know.
Speaker 7 (46:04):
It's it's Stevie, it's you.
Speaker 3 (46:07):
Know, look it. But let me see me. You're not alone.
You're not.
Speaker 2 (46:10):
That's why there's no attendance. It's a believe. It's a
we're in Missouri. You can show me until you show me.
Speaker 7 (46:16):
You know.
Speaker 3 (46:17):
But I go to the games.
Speaker 7 (46:18):
And in other programs they go to games too, even
when they're not any good, you know, they support their
teams and they go to the games for the.
Speaker 3 (46:25):
Sake of going to a game and having a good time.
How much better? How much more fun can you have
on a Saturday? Now? Was it fun when Kevin Sumlin
was here? No? Was it fun when John mcavin was here? No?
Speaker 7 (46:36):
But you know what, we figured out a way to
have fun, right we we you know we would We
joked about ourselves, you know, we we we made fun
of ourselves.
Speaker 3 (46:44):
Let's go back to this doctor two thousand and three
to two thousand and one, two thousand and two, two
thousand You knew where he was going.
Speaker 2 (46:50):
He was going opposite of the dictomy, right, Jim?
Speaker 3 (46:55):
And was that I can't remember.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
There was a lot of hype, a lot of hope
for hope for macav when he got her without without
knowing stuff.
Speaker 7 (47:01):
No, no, because it was he was a retread. And
and I remember when they said John mcovic, I'm like
John Mackovic, really that that's the best we could do.
Speaker 3 (47:14):
I was not happy with the hire. I didn't openly.
Speaker 7 (47:16):
Criticize it because you know, I liked Jim and I
liked live and good and stuff, and I thought, Okay,
if he thinks Macovic can do a good job here,
then Okay, I trust him that he would. But in
no time flat did we know we were in trouble.
And then he went from there and he was fired
two and a half years later. They went from there
to Stoops, right, and then and Stoops comes in and
you know, there was hope. He was he was the
(47:39):
number one hot assistance that year, and Arizona got him
and we were like, okay, this is this could be
really really good. And then he was hanging out at
Sullivan's instead of watching film and stuff like that, and
you could tell, you could tell he was not comfortable
being the head coach. You you you sense that early on.
(48:03):
But what you did see immediately, remember they opened up
three and eight. Three and eight, they were still getting
people at the games, but you saw a toughness on
his teams.
Speaker 3 (48:12):
They were badasses. They were losing, but they were bad.
Speaker 2 (48:16):
And no coach since and I could be talking out
of my you know what, has gotten better recruits than him.
Speaker 7 (48:22):
He got recruits, right, He got guys and they were
good a bunch of times, but you know it was
like they just he You could tell he had kind
of lost interest in being a head coach. And all
that came with it.
Speaker 2 (48:38):
In fact, in fact, the better head coaches his brother
at that time.
Speaker 7 (48:42):
Yeah, you know would be so, you know, so if
I ever told you, maybe I ever told you the story.
But remember he got fired in the middle of the year. Yeah, okay,
and so the following Friday, so you got fired, you know,
after a trip they were. So the following Friday, my
brother and a buddy of his were at a high
school football game, at a Sunnyside game, right, and they
(49:05):
always got sideline passes, soff maybe it was a Stuth
point came. I remember they were a game and who's
on the sidelines is Mike Stoops. And they went up
and talked to him, and they said he he looked
They said, he looked so relaxed, he looked happy.
Speaker 3 (49:17):
There no pressure on him. It was kind of like
he said.
Speaker 7 (49:21):
My brother said, you could tell a huge weight had
been lifted off of his shoulders, that he just was
happy to get rid of that. And then what's he
been since then? An assistant coach at different places. So
you know, sometimes it's it's not for everybody. Sometimes it's
a good time to right. Yeah, Sometimes you know, you
you be careful what you wish for, right, you don't
always want to be the head guy who's carrying it all.
(49:43):
And he said that they thought, you know, they didn't
know whether they should go up and talk to him.
He's going to be cranky with it, he said. They
chatted with him, talked to him for a long time.
He seemed happy, he was smiling, he was laughing because
this whole thing had been taken off.
Speaker 2 (49:54):
Okay, so we got five games left, yep, already all
just left. Okay, Colorado, give me Kansas.
Speaker 4 (50:01):
Kansas, Baylor, Cincinnatiinnati, Okay.
Speaker 3 (50:05):
Okay, so let's just go through it. You find me too. Tomorrow.
Speaker 7 (50:10):
Yeah, tomorrow, there's three give me I see three, maybe
even four? Isu now yes, you now, Kansas at home,
Kansas not very good, okay. And and Baylor. You're not
gonna beat Cincinnati. You gotta go to Cincinnati.
Speaker 4 (50:25):
So if they get the three game in Cincinnati, you
think they play good?
Speaker 7 (50:29):
Yeah, that that's a blowout waiting to happen Cincinnati.
Speaker 2 (50:33):
So three they go seven and five seven five.
Speaker 3 (50:37):
The job, yes, says his job. You win a bowl game.
Now you've got eight wins.
Speaker 7 (50:41):
You can't fire him, no, no, And and maybe you've
built some excitement Okay, let's give you this.
Speaker 2 (50:47):
Okay, they go seven and five, but the fan base
is still not there.
Speaker 4 (50:52):
I don't know then, I don't know that's just on
the fans, because if you go seven and five, you.
Speaker 3 (50:57):
Know, but you're bringing there.
Speaker 7 (50:59):
Here's the only thing, and here's the thing that desire
has to think about. If you're in Arizona and seven
and five isn't good enough to keep your job, why
would you go to areas?
Speaker 3 (51:08):
Why would you go to be a coach? Why would
you go coach for her right? If you have to
think about that.
Speaker 2 (51:15):
If I'm going to.
Speaker 7 (51:16):
Arizona and I go seven and five and that's not
good enough, do I really want to go to Arizona?
And there's gonna have to be something? I think he
goes seven and five. He stays, yeah, I agree with
six and six. I think it's probably a toss up.
Part of it will depend on what the six and
six looks like. Let's say it's six and six and
you beat Asu, okay, and you go to a bowl game.
(51:37):
We got to call it the desre.
Speaker 3 (51:41):
Dezre. Just please be nice to my son. He has
nothing to do with this. Do not let this reflect
on you do not let this reflect on it. He's adopted.
Speaker 4 (51:52):
Yeah, I mean, like you guys do make a good point.
I mean, like, well, I think Jay does. At least
seven and five. He should keep his job. He should
keep his job. It's like, man it I don't know,
but seven and five might also get the fan base.
Speaker 3 (52:04):
A little more.
Speaker 2 (52:05):
Yeah, juice, Yeah. October thirty, first, twenty twenty five. Jay
had a good point, right there.
Speaker 3 (52:13):
Come on, man, I have but I have lots of
good points.
Speaker 2 (52:16):
Our picture in forty minutes.
Speaker 3 (52:19):
We will revisit after. I'm gonna fight you.
Speaker 2 (52:23):
I have nothing against those blue colors that you worried
I did.
Speaker 3 (52:27):
It's okay, we're gonna fight. We gotta go, Okay, let's go.
Come back with your breaking news. Yep,
