Station yet Fox Sports fourteen fIF da.
Speaker 3 (00:10):
Hey, welcome back to wian the Ball Here on Fox
Sports fourteen to fifty.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
I'm Steve Rivera.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
You're Blake Eager solving the world's problems here, at least
community's problems.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Now we got one with breaking news.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
This is Eye on the Ball, Breaking News on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
Happy Wednesday to everyone out there. Once again, we're gonna
start with Arizona Athletics. Of course, Arizona football is back
this Saturday, seven thirty against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. If
you can't make it there, it'll be on TEA and
T for the first time for a big twelve.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
That's kind of big that it's gonna be on T
and T too. Did you watch the Hawaii Stanford game?
I watch bits and pieces of Yeah, would you think?
I mean, the Efford's always tough to tell because it's
like they haven't performed up to the level they were,
you know, ten years ago. So are they?
Speaker 4 (00:56):
I think they're a talented team for Mountain West standards
and where they have been the last couple of years.
I think their they're starting quarterback is right talented, very young,
very raw and away, but he's not.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
One hundred percent going into this game.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
He is expected to start, but how capable is he
of being able to perform at a high level? That's
the only question I have around Hawaii. Otherwise there should
be able to take care of business, hope. So, uh
soccer plays at Stafford tomorrow three pm on the ACC
network if you have that right now.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
Three and oo. I mean the women's team has been
known to be a solid in and year in and
year out right, So what's what's you know this more
than I do one? But what's the expectation for the
women's soccer team on a yearly basis?
Speaker 4 (01:47):
That one I'm not sure about because I'm just not
a soccer guy. I never I've never been to a
women's socer you a women's soccer game. I haven't covered
that in my time yet. But their next home game
is September fourth, Thursday, seven o'clock against Denver.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Against Denver, do you do you? Oh man, look at Denver?
Go to you? Sorry, that's the timber fourth.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
And then, of course, Arizona women's volleyball is back officially
to start the season in the Wildcat Classic. They'll take
on Alabama State six o'clock on Friday.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Have you been a lot of the women's volleyball games. Yeah,
over the years, I have been too a decent amount. Yeah,
they should be pretty solid this year, right, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
They went twelve and oh to start last season ended
twelve and oh. They were the NV I see, I
think or something like that champions the NIC equivalent to
women's women's volleyball, and they started off four and oh
against North Northern Colorado with their exhibition last Saturday. So
very again, another very athletic talented team.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
What's there? What's their normal attendance for average attendance for
home games for women's lollyball? It was maybe two thousand.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
But now they've gained some people because of what happened
last year. Coach Subs was pretty excited about the season
because she thinks that they grabbed you.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
I think she was saying, no, she said their season
tickets were up by like a thousand. Yeah, yeah, but
last year, yeah is how well they did that?
Speaker 4 (03:15):
Numbers way off Anyway, The Arizona Diamondbacks did lose their
third straight game, second lost straight to the Brewers in
a nine to eight game, got it pretty close towards
the end, but weren't able to pull it out.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
I don't care. You got to beat the Brewers. I'm sorry, Like,
somebody's got to step up and beat the Brewers because
we you know, the Cubs don't play them again for
the rest of the year, so we need somebody to
take care of business. So, yeah, Diamondbacks, they're not. The
debate now is you either keep Marte or you keep Lavelo, right,
like you can't have both of them or can't co exist?
(03:49):
Is that the problem? Yeah? I one, you know, Uh,
Martine's got some disciplaining and disciplinary and issues right now.
And I think it's it's probably a culture that's been
created in these yeah. Yeah, So it's who you believe in. Yeah, right,
And you look at this team right now, I mean
they sold the house at the trade of dead line
and they've got some great youth. Uh, it's exciting team
(04:10):
to watch.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Can you tell from Afar someone like you who's been
in the building and know when a good a good
locker room is a good locker room and when one's not.
Just based on the field, Yeah, just like the comments
being said on the field play and you can tell
a terrible team by a terrible team either that has talents.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Like Chicago White Socks. Yeah, I mean just a terrible team.
Terrible team. Yeah, you can't be it's most of it's
going to be in the dugout though, it's not gonna
be on the field right right, But but it happened,
and it starts the locker room people, just like it's
completely the clubhouse. Once you lose the clubhouse, it's it's
tough to regain anything. You get to get in a
fist fight, to be honest with you. You you literally like
it should be about mid season, right before the All
(04:52):
Star break, just getting a brawl in the clubhouse and
then that kind of wash will just clear everything out. Yeah,
and then you get together. I was watching Dexter Fowler
talk about the twenty sixteen Cubs and he said, why
was that team sped? They asked him why that team
was special, and he said, we literally spent every single
minute with each other like we were at the game.
It's a very rare thing. They would go to the game,
(05:14):
then after the game, they would all go to dinner together.
They would if family was in town, they bring their family,
they were incorporated and everything. So when they asked, I
think Jed Horror asked Dexter, what what do you guys
want for the playoffs? Like, what do you need? He goes,
here's what I need on our day off. I want
you to fly in everybody's spouses and families and we're
going to do a full team dinner with everybody, just
(05:36):
to re calculate kind of where we're at. And that's
what they did.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Do you think it starts from the top or it
starts from the top like the admins, the presidents and
the vps and the gms. Where if they if the
people at the bump and the players see that, yeah,
it helps out with you. I'm sure that's a stupid
obvious question. No, No, sometimes happened and people don't understand
that you're in that position. But you're not a good leader.
I don't get it.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Well, they're probably really good in other things, right, so
they're probably not a good leader, but they're extremely better
at everybody else and other things. But once you have
a bad leader from the top down, you don't set
an example or a standard, right, So what are you following?
But if I'm a player. I don't have expectations on
showing up at the ballpark every day. Why am I
showing up? So let me ask you one. I know
you're young. You probably had a few jobs, right, You've
had a couple of bad uh bosses?
Speaker 4 (06:20):
You'll no maybe not no, not to not to at
this point, only a guy named Steve Rivera.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
But it's about it cool cool, I'm joking seriously.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
I've never had a bad boss.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
And you probably have. Yeah, I know I have.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
I know I haven't had been very many. But it
doesn't want you to be to come back to another day.
But you have to because you're broken.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
You have to. I think a big piece of that, too,
is when you're in that situation in a leadership role
and you're you're bad at what you do, but you're
unwilling to learn or change. Would you think they know
that they're a bad leader. I think people are giving
them feedback. I think is that if you're like, take
let's take the Chicago White Sox, right, I don't know
any I know their current leadership is much better than
(07:05):
what it was because Ken William I probably shouldn't say that,
but you got a guy like Luis Roberts is going
to go into that front office and say whatever he wants,
because what are you gonna do to him?
Speaker 5 (07:16):
Right?
Speaker 1 (07:16):
But he's not that leader. He's not. He's shown time
and time. See now they have been attendee who's like,
you paid me for six years or whatever, five years,
I can go say whatever the hell I want because
he's guaranteed money, right, And that's a guy that needs
to go in that front office and say, listen, I
just came from a winning culture, right. We literally just
I was there with the Boston I went to this whole.
This is the standard that we should be setting. You
(07:36):
have to have an internal leadership, but you have to
have that top down. Okay.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
Well, Former NFL quarterback Jake Cutler will spend several days
in the Williamson County jail as part of the plea deal.
He took send me from a drunken driving arrest and
kissed somebody something. He didn't really didn't not really kill
anyone he killed. He didn't kill anybody. He just ran
into somebody. DUI four days I think is or four days?
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Four days? Yeah? You ever have that guy where you're
just like, I don't know, there's something about him, But
I just don't like him. Jay Cutler's that guy.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Yeah, you're not alone because it's something about his face.
I just don't like. Well, this may be stupid, but
he's a Vanderbil Brad. So he's smarter than you. Yeah
he's better than me. Yeah, what do you think you're
better than me? But hey, we all have our humbling moments.
You think this is going to humble him? If a
(08:28):
long history should get in the pod.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Should.
Speaker 4 (08:31):
Texan general manager Nick Cassierro was noncommittal about whether or
not Joe Mix will be playing this season. Uh, I
think a Pro Bowl running back in my opinion. Yeah,
when when he's when he's playing for Texans, that's a
that's a good team. I mean a team is going
to be solid anyway. I mean the offensive weapons they
have on there, it's ridiculous. Wait, they're saying he's not
(08:52):
going to play, that there's a chance he doesn't play
all season.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Damn it. Listen, man, I need this information one sooner.
I had to do two stupid fantasy drafts last week,
and that I shouldn't Every time I drafted Joe Mix
and he's been the worst running back in the league.
By the way, you're smarter man. At least I thought
you were than that. No, I got to That's why
I was like, wait, there, you can have four teams,
(09:18):
I have five, and then and then you're gonna have
to fight with each other because you're gonna be playing
against each other all the same leagues too. We're all
close friends.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
You don't like calmness, you know, quiet is good. Calm
is good. Yeah, I don't. I'm not good with calm.
I am in nature. I am not at home.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
She's wide receiver or she Rice has been suspended for
the first six games of the season.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
He will be hopefully coming back by week seven. We'll
see if there's any more discipline his career too. But
he's in my Dynasty league. You're like Jay, If you
guys ever played Dynasty, it's awful. Don't ever play Dynasty.
You have to keep the same team for five years.
It's miserable. It's a stupid, buttest thing I've ever getting
(10:01):
in Dynasty is the stupid Why didn't wait, he's spent
in six games. I thought it was gonna be four,
two to four six games. They're gonna for violating the
NFL's personal conduct policy.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Yeah, god, you're a geek. Yeah, this is ridiculous. Like
I thought I had, I got no chance.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
The closest GM said they won't be training Anthony Richardson
even though they've named Daniel Jones their starting quarterback. They
want to see the continued development of that dude play
Who's who wants?
Speaker 1 (10:28):
I mean, I don't like, good question, why did you
draft him? I mean he didn't have like building up
to that point. You like a guy that you were like,
I got to go out of the way to grab
this guy. I don't know. Yeah, I love the old
school way of having a guy set for one to
two years to learn from somebody. I don't know if
I would want to learn from Daniel Jones by any means,
but I mean, but you have a chance to learn. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
(10:49):
I like this. Why I think PIX doesn't he have
a great great Yeah? Absolutely? You know he's older, Yeah,
and he can play. Dean Sanders has.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
Found the the runner enough her up follow up to
Shador and Ken Saltry. He's been named the Colorado Buffalo
starting quarterback. Okay from Liberty, my.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Son gonna probably try to lend somewhere else or maybe
go coach with his dad. I assume, Oh, I don't
care exactly, So that's how I feel I could care less.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
Bill Belichick has found his starting quarterback for his first year,
North Carolina twenty four year old Gee Lopez, a twenty
four years year old the Coast co.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
His girlfriend's ex boyfriend. Yeah, can we tell let's talk
about this because we've not we've not hit on this, Like,
do we think Bill Belichick is going to do well
in college? It's a different world his age, where he's at,
it's well.
Speaker 4 (11:47):
I mean, is it consistently making a bowl game? Is
it for national championships?
Speaker 1 (11:52):
No? No offense. You have to if you're Bill Belichick,
what's the point of taking this job? If you're not
competing for national championships? Then you know no, So then
why take it? Ten million dollars a year? Seventy four?
Speaker 3 (12:04):
I think it is seventy four years old getting paid
ten million dollars a year. I think in his heart
of hearts, he thinks he can get back to the
league for whatever reason. But at this point, I would
assume that you'd have to start calling your end game.
I think too many people don't know your end game.
If I can have my end game tomorrow, I would.
But you know what I'm saying, seventy four years old,
got more money than God. Why would you even care
(12:24):
about succeeding it?
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Okay, just take a consultant job exactly be part of
from his front office? Like anyway, maybe does his girlfriend
live in the dorm still or know what? They have
a lot of patents going on and one of them
is uh is gold Digger? Yeah? Oh really, who cares
Ben Belichick's seventy four seventy four, seventy four?
Speaker 3 (12:48):
Please tell me that I'm out walking the pastors and
not caring about the fantasy leagues.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
You're gonna have to put me in it. I'm gonna
have so many silver alerts when I'm seventy four. May
driving the wrong way on the highway. Kind have already do. Yeah,
that's true.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
Kansas State running back Dylan Edwards went out with the ankle,

Speaker 1 (18:12):
Did you please correct me on this Legacy Foundation? How
do you say?
Speaker 5 (18:16):
So?
Speaker 13 (18:17):
You say le like shorty, right le, new like the word.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
New and yes, tell me tell me you have some
big plans coming up.
Speaker 5 (18:29):
I do. I don't know where you want me to start. So,
first of all, the.
Speaker 13 (18:34):
New means the village or community in Samoan. So I
am someone I was born and raised in Hawaii, but
I am someone Both my parents are from Samoa but
left Hawaii when they were kids. I got involved with
like the football team a couple.
Speaker 5 (18:51):
Of years ago, like three years ago.
Speaker 13 (18:52):
We've been in Tucson for about fifteen years, and I've
just sat and watched as athletes have come and gone.
So that's kind of where it started, right, But really
three years ago is what.
Speaker 5 (19:04):
Happened, just kind of the I started seeing.
Speaker 13 (19:07):
The challenges of you know, being a Pacific under a
Polynesian kid away from home, the culture, just everything. And
then fast forward to you know now in the last
so many years, the complexity of NIL transfer portal being
displaced like into kind of a foreign world. And when
I say foreign, even a Polynesian from the United States,
(19:29):
right from California, you know, coming to Arizona, I still
think it's foreign.
Speaker 5 (19:35):
So just this came.
Speaker 13 (19:36):
About because we were talking about just addressing issues that
were critical to these students' lives and success. And I
don't know where else where else to go, but being
like an intercollegiate student athlete, it's just really become, in
my opinion, incredibly complex, because of revenue sharing, nil, the
(19:57):
transfer portal.
Speaker 5 (19:57):
All of those things.
Speaker 13 (19:59):
And typically Pacific Islander or Polynesian student athletes simply they
just can't afford to make a mistake. That my compromise, right,
they're realizable chance to change their lives. Most of my people, right,
we don't come from a lot truly humble beginnings, most
of us. And if these athletes like fall out of
(20:20):
the system somehow don't finish their four years, leave after
one or two years, really the prospects of obtaining that
degree become super slim.
Speaker 5 (20:30):
And I'm hoping that Len, we can.
Speaker 13 (20:34):
Help diminish right and eliminate just the unique vulnerabilities that
go along with being a student athlete who is a
Pacific Isleander.
Speaker 1 (20:42):
So is the Lene new Who? Am I saying that?
Speaker 5 (20:44):
Right?
Speaker 1 (20:44):
Len new Who? I cannot promounce words in general, but
I will keep working on it. I did live in
a wife, so I'm really embarrassed at this point. So
is it a land Is it kind of a sauce
landing for both athletes and students that way, they feel
like there's more community outreach and effort there. That's really
(21:07):
that's extremely important, And how many kids are involved in.
Speaker 5 (21:10):
This right now. We have Naita.
Speaker 13 (21:15):
We have a small group here of about seven or eight.
Speaker 5 (21:19):
Of them that we've met with right.
Speaker 13 (21:21):
And talked about it, and we're specifically starting with like
we're super brand new. We started in April and our
launches tomorrow night, and so we're specifically starting with the
football program because we have a relationship with them. We
have a great relationship with the program. We've met with
coach Brent Brennan last April. We were talking about it
(21:43):
for almost two years. So when they came in, we
met with him. We met with him again, and you know,
we talked about how we could start first with them,
because initially I was concerned, My partners were concerned. We
didn't want folks to think that this was a University
of Arizona thing.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
We happen to live here, so we.
Speaker 13 (22:02):
Want to start with the university that we love and
that's here. And Coach Brennan was like, I'm constantly supportive
of it. And even last week when I was speaking
on the Spears oft Ali show, I was a little worried,
like if they asked me about this. I haven't talked
to Brennan in a few weeks, and I just want
to make sure. But I saw him last week and
he said, nope, I'm good with you saying it, saying
(22:24):
that we're supportive. So that's why we're starting. So I
think there's about nineteen.
Speaker 5 (22:28):
Pacific Calendar football players.
Speaker 13 (22:30):
With that said, we are actually we want to service
all Pacific Calendar athletes soccer. Right, there's three soccer young
ladies who are coming to our event tomorrow night. There's
a volleyball player at Ua that's coming, and coach check
Murphy might be bringing two or three basketball players.
Speaker 5 (22:51):
I think their mothers are Hawaiian.
Speaker 13 (22:53):
Right, We want to we want everybody to know that
we are serving all Pacific Calendar students.
Speaker 5 (22:59):
We are starting.
Speaker 13 (23:00):
We happen to be starting with the football team because
we have a good relationship with them.
Speaker 1 (23:04):
I think it's a good starting point too for that.
But it's what you're doing. And some people don't understand this,
but when you live in a different state, different city,
maybe a different country or different culture completely, it's always nice,
especially as a young person, to have a sense of home,
and it's really important. I remember my freshman year of college,
I drove home every single weekend, and that first semester
(23:26):
was homesick, right, So getting that chance to be and
that culture is really important. Have you long term are
you thinking about reaching out to communities and colleges around US?
So Pima Community College Eastern has a large Polynesian population
because of the warm Face. Yes, absolutely perfect. If you
need help there, you're all in our region.
Speaker 5 (23:47):
Let me know, thank you, I appreciate it.
Speaker 13 (23:50):
But absolutely we want to start here and then we
want to expand. I mentioned on the show I thought
I was on last week the interview that believe it
or not, Arizona State is interested in learning about Lenu
and I have a few, you know, not blood but
we call them nephews that are on the football team.
Speaker 5 (24:11):
And one of them just he asked me a few
months ago.
Speaker 13 (24:14):
We just happen to be talking about what I was doing,
and I told him and he was like, how do
I sign up? And I said, well, I said, we're
just getting started, so let me get started in Tucson
and I said, and then you know, we'll work our
way around to the schools that are surrounding the area.
Speaker 5 (24:30):
But yeah, we that is our intention to expand.
Speaker 3 (24:34):
So at the end of the day, what's the hope
for this are they counselors? Are the empowers mentors? What
are they are?
Speaker 5 (24:44):
So I like that question. So at the end of
the day, there's two things, right.
Speaker 13 (24:48):
The very first thing is that every athlete that comes
through LENUU legacy comes through us, and you know, is
a part of our our initiatives. We have like workshops,
we have a global initiative where we.
Speaker 5 (25:02):
Take a group of students who are.
Speaker 13 (25:04):
Interested to like right now, we're planning on taking them
to the Solomon Islands Pacific Oceans Conference. And it's like
being able to give them that my graineous stocks that platform,
right and the experience to do something like that. And
so number one, all college student like our you know,
(25:24):
I hate using the word promise that our plan is
that any student that comes through rest, they'll leave college with.
Speaker 5 (25:30):
A comprehensive development plan.
Speaker 13 (25:32):
And that's like the number one most important thing, right,
a plan whether they're going onto their sport professionally or
onto their career. Something that I've seen for years now,
maybe even fifteen plus years, is I've seen athletes come
to the mainland and the mainline is the continental US
right to folks in Hooi, but come to the mainland,
(25:52):
come to schools and if they're not the number one,
right or number two, it's an average of about.
Speaker 5 (25:58):
Two years and they're gone, right gone.
Speaker 13 (26:00):
Their the their dream you know, did not come you know,
to fruition, and they're gone back to their village, their town,
their city, wherever they're from, and they're not doing anything
that they.
Speaker 5 (26:12):
Really want to do. So super important.
Speaker 13 (26:14):
My partner Jim Grossman Ricky Helmy actually introduced us. He's
had extensive experience over thirty years of working in off
field and post career development in preparation. We both realized
almost two years ago we started talking about this, that
there should be some form of like organizational response to
like the issues that my people, right, the students from
(26:35):
the islands are having, particularly these you know, these Pacific.
Speaker 5 (26:39):
Island or Polynesian athletes.
Speaker 13 (26:40):
So no organization existed to do what we thought was
an essential service, and that number one is you're going
to leave here with.
Speaker 5 (26:48):
A plan, like a real plan. And then the big
goal after.
Speaker 13 (26:51):
That is I hope to build the most comprehensive Pacific
on their athlete network from this, right, so we're looking
at with three pillars.
Speaker 5 (27:02):
Excuse me, get a drink? Cool, So there's three pillars
that we have.
Speaker 13 (27:07):
We had a vocacy, professional development and community engagement, and
we start with building a model approach here at UA,
and then our hope is that we become the hub
of like this vital network of support. The network will
consist of like distinguished network of role models, mentors, subject
matter experts, and our hope is that it will sustain
our mission to be the premier resource for these aspiring,
(27:29):
active and retired pacifica under athletes, no matter where.
Speaker 5 (27:32):
There might be. So that's kind of the in a nutshell.
Speaker 3 (27:35):
So did you last week there was that punter or
kicker from Australia that was that Nebraska I think it
was or called Nebraska. Did you see that to highlight
where were I did not. It's fantastic inasmuch as they're
from Australia. They've been away from home for the first time.
He's a freshman and they asked him, you know, how
was it and he started to cry, sorry, I haven't
(27:55):
been I missed my family. So this is perfect for that,
right And Noah and some of the others how they
said to you, thank you, we need.
Speaker 5 (28:04):
This, Oh my gosh.
Speaker 13 (28:06):
So I'll start with Noah So in June, my husband
Phil and I we reached out to Noah because we
had heard from folks that told us they were supportive
of our initiatives, but they really wanted Noah Fifita's like
input and they thought they basically they said, we'd love
to support you, only Noah's on board. And so I
(28:27):
called Noah and I invited him to dinner, and I
just was transparent, parent and I said to him, uncle,
and I would love.
Speaker 5 (28:33):
To talk to you, because he'd already known what we
were doing.
Speaker 7 (28:35):
Right.
Speaker 13 (28:36):
We talked about it here and there, but we never
sat down, had to look at the binder. So we
spent a couple hours with him, and as he looked through,
as we discussed, at the end of the evening, he said,
all of your initiatives, he said, it is something that
we need, if we need, we want, it's awesome. And
he had made one suggestion, and one of his suggestions was, Hey,
when we have those social gatherings every quarter, can somebody
(28:59):
come in and tea some of us our native tongue
because not all of us speak our language, our parents' language.
Speaker 5 (29:05):
So yeah, So that was Noah.
Speaker 13 (29:07):
And then about maybe three or four weeks ago, we
had Rhino, excuse me, Rhino, we had let we had Tiasavia.
Just about seven or eight of these guys come over
and then my team I invited them over. Normally I
invited them over and I just feed them, right, we
feed them, we have fun. But I had reached out
(29:27):
to them and said, this is business. I'd like to really.
Speaker 5 (29:30):
Tell you guys about our foundations.
Speaker 13 (29:32):
So my team came, we talked to them, and at
the end of the evening, you know, one of our
partners went around and.
Speaker 5 (29:38):
Just asked them, so, like, tell us how you feel,
and it was overwhelmingly positive. Right, this is awesome. I
can't wait to do work with you guys. I can't
wait to do this. So yeah, so far positive feedback.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
Are you going?
Speaker 6 (29:53):
Are you?
Speaker 1 (29:54):
Are you going to keep it in the student anthe realm?
Are you going to open it up for all students?
Speaker 5 (29:59):
So so you.
Speaker 13 (30:01):
Know, you're the second person who's asked me that in
twenty four hours. And so I had really just been
focused so much on the student athlete, right. But as
I was building our fax page. I have a nephew
who built our website. I was talked to my husband
and I said, I don't want.
Speaker 5 (30:18):
I want, I don't want.
Speaker 13 (30:19):
Anyone who comes to me, comes to the boys, right,
the guys, the girls, whatever, athletes and say hey, I'd
like to be a.
Speaker 5 (30:25):
Part of it.
Speaker 13 (30:26):
I would never turn them down, right, We would never
say no. So in our fact page it's like, do
you have to be you know, a Pacific islander and
on it. You know, it's a resounding no. Right, we focus,
that's our focus. But we would never turn anyone down. Anybody,
any college student who comes to us and wants help,
We're going to give it to them. It's just culturally
(30:47):
we just help.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
Right.
Speaker 13 (30:48):
I come from this village that the entire village helped everyone, Right,
My parents helped everyone help. And you just did it
just because, right, you did it because you're.
Speaker 5 (30:56):
A good human.
Speaker 13 (30:57):
So yeah, that I had thought about that, But like
I said, you're the second person in twenty four hours
who asked me.
Speaker 5 (31:03):
So I had a conversation with my husband and I.
Speaker 13 (31:05):
Just said, I just I'm not going to say no
anybody who comes, you know, comes to us and says
I'm not an athlete or right, I you know, whatever
the case is, I'm a college student. I need help.
Speaker 5 (31:15):
And so we want to open it up to everyone.
Speaker 1 (31:18):
So tell me about tomorrow because that's a big deal.
Speaker 5 (31:21):
Yeah, so tomorrow.
Speaker 13 (31:24):
So one of our initiatives is our social the social initiative,
and it's every quarter. It's our very first gathering. And
so there's a term. It's called halle Halibai. You don't
have to say it or repeat it, but halle Hallibai
is like the meeting house, right, and it's a Hawaiian term.
And so we have these halley halibis and they're starting tomorrow.
(31:47):
Tomorrow is a little bit different because it's the big launch, right,
But we get together and the social aspect is we
bring people who look like our students, right, we bring
in community members. We being bring in like tomorrow night,
Teitatua McMillan's grandmother is our community leader that's.
Speaker 5 (32:04):
Coming in so Blenche McMillan says, she's on a plane
right now as we speak. She's going to be our
community leader speaker.
Speaker 13 (32:11):
Right. We have coach Ricky Hunley who's going to he
at the last minute took the place of someone else
who was unable to make it that he'll be speaking.
Then we have Jimmy Snooka Junior. I don't know if
you guys are wrestling fans, but Jimmy Superplies Snooka.
Speaker 5 (32:28):
So Jimmy Superpli Snooka's.
Speaker 13 (32:29):
Son, Jimmy Suka Junior, will also be speaking. His daughter,
Panina Snuoka, was an Arizona standout in volleyball twenty thirteen
to twenty sixteen.
Speaker 5 (32:39):
So these hollih Hall of Bays.
Speaker 13 (32:40):
Are meant to bring community members. Bring you know, I
have a friend who is a Hawaiian dentist.
Speaker 5 (32:46):
Right, There's not a lot.
Speaker 13 (32:47):
Of Hawaiian dentists, right, So we want to bring people
to these gatherings and have them come and talk and
we have food because that's what we do best, right,
We sit, we eat, we talk, talk, story is what
we say, and we eat and so every quarter we
have that. But the idea is after that happens, right
(33:08):
after they come and speak to all the athletes, all
the students, whoever's there, then our hope is that hey,
all of the new ones, right, come.
Speaker 5 (33:16):
On, freshmen, come on, the Noah's right, the.
Speaker 13 (33:18):
Seniors, and let's talk, right because relationships are built around
the fireplace, and so that's kind of how our social
quarterly things are going to go. So tomorrow night we
are we are coming out like it's our coming out.
We're coming out to the public. And Tucson who we are.
My daughter, she's a teenager to money. Sheil she wanted
(33:39):
to welcome everyone. So she's going to welcome everyone. She's
going to introduce me.
Speaker 5 (33:42):
I'm going to start the night.
Speaker 13 (33:44):
I'll have our three partners, Jacob Flores, Jim Grossman, and
my husband Phil. They'll just say a few words and
then we have our main speakers, Tito McMillan's grandmother again, Blanche.
Speaker 5 (33:57):
She will speak.
Speaker 13 (33:58):
And what I love is that she's coming. She's talking
about why she agreed to be on our advisory board
number one, so she'll talk about what she thinks about Lenuu.
And then she's going to just introduce everyone to her.
Speaker 5 (34:11):
Foundation in Hawaii.
Speaker 13 (34:13):
And she has a foundation and she does a whole
bunch of things. She's like a pillar in the wayman
alo Oahu community and she helps with the homeless population,
literally gets them off the street. On her plot of land.
She has like I want to say, I could be wrong,
like forty ish one bedroom like bungalows, or like one
room bungalows, she has these folks come and then she
(34:35):
teaches them to live off the.
Speaker 5 (34:38):
Land like she. They grow vegetables and.
Speaker 13 (34:40):
They eat, so she does that and like you know,
so she wants to to introduce that tomorrow because we
want to partner with her. We'd like to take our
athletes to Hawaii so that we can volunteer there with her.
So she's speaking, and then Rickie Hanley is speaking, and
before Jimmy.
Speaker 5 (34:58):
Snooka closes it.
Speaker 13 (35:00):
I was super sad last week because the football programmed
they had they had a last minute change in their scheduling,
so they are having a practice tomorrow night. I completely
understand right that they have a practice tomorrow night, so
we're without the football players or the coaches. Some coaches
are coming, I think. But they decided that they're going
to make videos lending support. So Noah has already made
(35:24):
an endorsement video. They are actually going to broadcast it
at the game on Saturday, and.
Speaker 5 (35:30):
It's him basically twenty seconds of him saying.
Speaker 13 (35:32):
How he feels about Lenou and how he's a part
of it, and he's inviting everyone to scan the code
and check out our website so they can learn more
and be a part of it as well.
Speaker 5 (35:41):
So Ben Dinas.
Speaker 13 (35:43):
They think he's the chiefest saff at football. He I
could have made his made his position up. I think
that's what he is. And Ben told me that they're
doing videos today. I was at the facility earlier for
something and they're going to send it and then we're
going to show those videos to those who are.
Speaker 5 (35:58):
In attendance tomorrow.
Speaker 13 (35:59):
We have community members, donors, potential donors, you know, we
have some media folks there as well. But that's kind
of you know, that's kind of what it is. It's
our it's our big launch and we're still in the
fundraising face. So that's that's what tomorrow is going to
look like.
Speaker 3 (36:15):
Well, Benji, we appreciate your time. Good luck with it.
We'll probably talk to you again at some point. Then
go ahead.
Speaker 1 (36:20):
I want to ask one more question before you get off,
because I know from your standpoint, what's the best to
Hawaiian barbecue and Tucson.
Speaker 5 (36:27):
What's the best Hawaiian barbecue?
Speaker 1 (36:30):
I know?
Speaker 5 (36:31):
Can you say Southern Arizona instead Arizona?
Speaker 13 (36:34):
I am not I am not knocking anybody in Tucson,
but I believe that the best is Moohanna Barbecue.
Speaker 5 (36:41):
And they are catering tomorrow night.
Speaker 13 (36:44):
If you don't have dinner plans, to stop by a place.
Speaker 5 (36:48):
We're at the Marriott. We're at an area right there.
Speaker 1 (36:51):
On second, No, no, where's the food coming? Where do they?
Speaker 5 (36:55):
Ohana Barbecue? They're from Mesa, oh Masa?
Speaker 13 (36:58):
Okay, okay, yeah, And I think you know everyone here right.
I'm kind of a snob about food, right, Hawaiian State
lunch food.
Speaker 5 (37:06):
So my favorite. I think they're all good, right, but
my favorite comes from Mesa. Hence why they're going to care.
Speaker 1 (37:12):
Well, thank you very much having on and we'll see you.
Speaker 5 (37:14):
Again so much for having me.
Speaker 13 (37:15):
Thank you great, John, wonderful, have a good one.
Speaker 1 (37:20):
Nailed it.

go good to talk to Benji. I would have never
known that that existed, And there's some there's some need
for it, obviously with the Polynesians here in town with
Noah and the rest of them. So good need good
salve good. So for that, I mean, I'm gonna send.
We're talking about this text got here hear this? Okay,
(41:57):
we're talking about the juve and the ticket and blah
blah blah. Right, here's a caller who texts me there's arrogance.
Presumption in nine degree heat is hard to sell at
nine pm. I haven't seen or heard one U Way
football promotion. I'm expecting twenty five to thirty thousand people
versus Hawaii.
Speaker 1 (42:17):
Let me ask you.
Speaker 3 (42:18):
I've seen a few ads, maybe a handful, maybe a
handful in.
Speaker 1 (42:24):
The last month, but I think I've seen a lot.
But I think his arrogance and presumption. I speak about
that a lot.
Speaker 3 (42:32):
Not on this air, but a lot because I think
they think because it's Arizona, people come. That's been the
case for a long time. I don't know if it's
been under the Desirey's watch recently, but they have that
attitude of we are who we are, come and come
and watch us.
Speaker 1 (42:50):
Yeah, yeah, I can see that. I mean it's not
working up to this point. No, No, I don't mean I'm
messingly not because I think Desire's done a great job.
I think the athletic department, you've he's done it. They're
doing a great job. And maybe they don't have the
answer either. They're trying to figure it out. But if
you're expecting fans just to show up, just to show up,
that's not gonna happen. There's gotta be make a reason
for making a reason, right host have an event, have
(43:12):
a concert, do something they're doing that they're doing. Do
we know who the first one is? I can they're
doing a concert this Saturday, every game, every home Yes,
still involve ya. So that's why I was asking earlier. Yeah,
pre game, you're not gonna get what's his name to
come with his emo band from the nineties out there.
Speaker 3 (43:31):
Pieces Shock is coming. I know those guys DJ Diesel,
DJ Diesel, Tom.
Speaker 1 (43:38):
Yeah, I know. And so is a Magic mic right, yes, yes, yeah,
it's Magic, which is one of those dudes J boys.
What do you Saturdays? Oh yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah,
Drew Cooper. Is that the first one? That's the first
one does say? What cut of music?
Speaker 7 (43:54):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (43:56):
Okay, go out there, man, there's nothing nothing beats live.
Talk to Tommy two weeks ago. Two weeks ago.
Speaker 1 (44:01):
Yeah, he grabbed him for like five seconds. Yeah, I
just talked baseball with him when I see him. That
was quick five seconds. He was you know it's that's yeah, yeah,
good personality, good person in the community. Yeah yeah, it's
a good dude. Yeah. Just win, baby, just win. When
he's like, I'm buying my tickets to the final Fords
(44:23):
National champions I was like, the hell are you? Like,
what do we doing? But you said that?
Speaker 13 (44:29):
Just now.
Speaker 3 (44:29):
Let me take five years ago today, a guy named
Robert Luther Olsen passed.
Speaker 1 (44:34):
Yeah, and that was five years ago. That's today, it's today.
Speaker 3 (44:38):
I posted something my story off when from the day,
when the day had happened. I pushed my story for
when I wrote five years ago, just kind of it
seems like a long time, but it's not a long time.
And then we just finished the Littelson camps, so you know,
kind of timely.
Speaker 1 (44:51):
But you had you had coach Olsen, coach Kendall, and
coach Tomy. No, yeah, all past oh with somewhat close. Yeah,
within a few years. But I thought you were going
to go to the Mount rushmore of whatever's on the sports. Oh,
they're all I mean, yeah, they're up there for me. Yeah,
Kimdell for sure, can Drea for sure? For sure? Loot it.
(45:14):
It has to go Candrea first, okay? Yeah? Eight eight
seven times eight eight National championships gold. Don't forget what
another guy? Uh, Frank Bush, Yeah, you're right, you could
be the fourth. Yeah, there you go. We diald it.
We did it. I think we'll build it. We built it.
I think I wanted to say done it, and then
it came out, did it. It's done it? Speaking like
(45:36):
I mean, you heard me trying to pronounce any word.
It's as ridiculous. Why do you have me on the radio?
I can't even get sentences out anybody else I know.
I mean, I am uh scraping the bottle or a barrel?
Are you available, tod Yes? Great, but I'm gonna be
ten men's late.
Speaker 3 (45:54):
The anxiety that creates when I hit Campbell, it's it's overwhelming,
especially so angry.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
Yeah, because the students are back in. Yeah, I get that. Hey,
did you guys read the Consumer report that we are
the fifth worst drivers in the United States? Did they
have that four? I think it's like Fort Lauderdale, l A.
Like we should not be in the same breath.
Speaker 4 (46:14):
It's funny these bigger cities and then there's a little
old Tucson.
Speaker 1 (46:18):
I mean, everybody says little You're right, but from a
city standpoint, where what the twenty eighth largest city in
the United States. Yeah, but it's one way in, one
way out place. And it would have ever thought to
build a highway east to west. That would have been crazy. Right.
But Okay, so there's this there's this video. I think
it's in Denmark. It's in Denmark, right, So they have
(46:39):
a kid's playground. The whole playground, this huge playground is
streets and it's got traffic lights, it's got crosswalks, and
kids can ride their bikes, so they learn how to
they know, they learn how to abide traffic laws and
how to do crosswalks at like the youngest age. And
I was like, we need to do something. How are
you the fifth worst drivers in the like? How that's
so embarrassing and you have to do it.
Speaker 3 (47:00):
At least once a day and you have to check
off your box. Yeah, every time you get a ticket,
you got to go to that kid's playground on your
little tricycle. I don't care.
Speaker 1 (47:09):
Be a better driver, that's good, that's perfect. Red lights. No, God,
I don't even start with that. My whole thing is
that I've said this on the show.
Speaker 3 (47:18):
I think with you, I've seen people who see invisible cars.
Speaker 1 (47:23):
Yeah, you ever seen an invisible Ye.
Speaker 3 (47:24):
You're at the light, you want to turn right, and
you get a car in front of you, no cars coming,
and then all of a sudden it just pops out
and they just come on, go, come on, you can go,
And they finally decide to go, but the car now
is on top of you.
Speaker 1 (47:37):
Yeah, no, you had like five minutes to go. I
don't know. My biggest pet peeve is going on I
ten and everybody rides in the left lane and I'm like, listen,
just get over. It doesn't mean like you got in
the left lane, you pass somebody, Now get over. Like
I hate to say, there's other states that do an
incredibly good job, and I don't want to name one
of them because I hate the state. But you get
over and us where you're like, oh, it's seventy five,
(47:58):
I'm gonna go seventy four and it's stupid lane and
then I'm just cursing the whole time. God, it's the
worst good delt. What do you say, dlt del dilf.
I didn't. I don't think I said delf. That word
combination could get close get us. I'm so curious to
who the other ones were. Back in New Mexicoo like
(48:20):
the smaller town's house. It's like, come on, they just
go faster. You can go faster, they allow it. Yeah,
I'm fine with like that speed. I just don't want
like today, you're guys going seventy five down Campbell just
to break and there's forty cars back and he's still going. Somebody,
I was like, where are you going?
Speaker 6 (48:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (48:35):
Yeah, what is the point of that be right next
to you? I want to have I want to pull
all these people in the room and just ask, what's
the point? What are you doing that in their fart
boxes and their cars that they are at three o'clock
in the morning. Dude, you're still going forty miles an hour. Like,
you don't have a race car, you have a muffler.
Beat it, get out of here a campus, dude. Those
(48:59):
kids are the worse. It's annoying.
Speaker 3 (49:00):
So so I said, I'm not worry they might be
the worst people in the world. I am sorry muffling
people like, get over yourself. Let me say this, this
is not the muffler place.
Speaker 1 (49:09):
Today.
Speaker 3 (49:09):
I was at ULA talking to Ricky getting some stuff done,
and I had been there obviously for football. But it's
a pretty good looking parking lot. Yeah, pretty good looking
parking lot.
Speaker 1 (49:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (49:20):
I won't say who this was, but I parked my car,
got out, was headed to the UA basketball or to
the officer and good guy who drives up in a
nice black Mercedes.
Speaker 1 (49:30):
I don't even look because.
Speaker 3 (49:31):
I don't want to acknowledge and Uh, it's a basketball
player and I'm thinking counted a few of those Mercedes.
The students have a nice parking lot with some nice cars.
I know the professors ain't driving those.
Speaker 1 (49:46):
No a lot of money. Yeah, I think Ellis used
to give out cars back in the eighties and nineties
from recruitment. They couldn't but they had to deal with
the dealership. So yeah, now I was gonna say this
before we get off. You know, what she's doing with
the Polynesian community and the Pacific Islanders is extremely important
(50:06):
and it should go into kind of I think it
should bleed out into some other organizations as well. Yeah,
and I'm saying this as a homer just because if
these students are a they feel comfortable, they're gonna play better, right,
But they're gonna they're gonna want to stay in our
community and consider Tucson a home. You talk to a
lot of former you've a just students right in general,
(50:27):
and you ask them about Tucson. They they don't know
anything about Tucson because you don't leave campus right by Denver.
We went from Golden Colorado to downtown because that's where
our campus was, so we didn't really transfer out. So
if you can get them connected in our community, there's
a chance they stay in it. Right, So, whether they're
students or students athletes, it gives us more talent to
keep in our community for our What we're at right
(50:48):
now is you we we don't even retain thirty percent
of college graduates or trade school graduates. Really, we don't
have the jobs here. Yeah, let me ask you school.
Speaker 3 (50:56):
I asked this with the guys at Reggie, the brothers,
brother and then Ricky. They could have gone They're not
from here. They love Tucson. We gotta go. You're giving
me that high sight. Give me the best thing about
tu Soon. You're native the food, but you don't stay
for the food. Maybe do No, he's hopefully he's.
Speaker 1 (51:16):
Got a warm made every single day. Mom is there?
Did you see his lunchbox in that it's the square Bob?
What square Bob square pants?
Speaker 6 (51:28):
Right?
Speaker 1 (51:28):
I just the best lead into jokes, SpongeBob square pants.
It was a square real quick, real quick.
Speaker 4 (51:34):
My pick for the week, my pick for because you
guys are gonna do them Friday, I'm not on the
rest of the week. I'm gonna have Texas over Ohio State.
Speaker 1 (51:40):
Wow. I'm going to I'm going the other way. A
crazy pick the top what four verses? Two? What is it? Three?
I'm taking How did you? You're crazy? Okay? Good? Are
think I'm going to win this? One x later
