Speaker 1 (00:00):
Streaming live on the Ihearts Radio AaB. This is I
on the Ball with Steve Rovera on Fox Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Hey, welcome back to Why on the Ball here on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. You your one
and we'll get to two. Breaking Newsrea, No, no, no,
who's a Donce point with with the with the tennis.
I think he's spout on you can't one more chance
of this? If they win this weekend, maybe they show
up the week after.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
I think that's why I asked the question about the tailgate,
because I think there is some uh, there's sometial collect
there and potential to collect if you're drawing in that
many people. I think that starts to sweep over in
the game time. And to one's point, I think maybe
next year if that does seep over and they stay
through halftime and then they leave, so be it. The
following year they stay through the second half and then
just cart you. I think it's a four to five
(00:52):
year build that you really have to start somewhere.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
Yeah, okay, I my breaking news really quick. Ye.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
I can't believe that you threw out a Paul Simon
song I'm like blown away. I didn't think you had
it anybody.
Speaker 5 (01:03):
I know.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
It's crazy. Sorry, okay, I'll hit intro, go ahead, wand
take it away.
Speaker 6 (01:10):
We're gonna start with some Arizona athletics. Arizona Softball was
able to sign five on signing day. Maddie Babasa outfielder,
Lee Hauser right hand pitcher, Natalie Keith infielder, Violet Mitchell infielder,
and Gabriella Nevdeza Nevadez.
Speaker 4 (01:27):
Sorry, yeah, it's close outfielder. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Did you see there's their preseason against Pima Commune College.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
I did not know. They look good.
Speaker 6 (01:37):
It's the number one signing class in the Big twelve
and ranked number twenty four in the nation by Softball.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
You had the number one signing class in the Big
twelve and you'd barely crack the twenty five. That's that's
crazy to me, right, because I mean and and softball
is a completely different world, right, SEC is going to
be number one. PAC twelve used to be number one.
That doesn't exist anymore. Obviously, you would think that Big
twelve would maybe slide into that category because Big ten's not.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
No, you have u Cilia Oregon yeah, but that means I'm.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Gonna I mean their West Coast school. Yeah right, Yeah,
it's still wild to me. Number one recruiting class, twenty
fourth overall.
Speaker 6 (02:14):
So yeah, anyway, women's basketball also had some signings today
six foot two guard Priyanka pon Ponham, four star guard
Jaslene Green, and four star guard MICHAELA.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
Preser Palmer.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
They give her three or I guess here four four
stars for next I believe, so good for good for
coach Burke. She's done a good job so far. They've
gotten better every single game they stepped on the floor.
I think players like playing for.
Speaker 6 (02:38):
So I think it'll be a team to just keep
an eye on. Yeah, especially going into next year. Yeah,
it'll be a fun team to watch, right. Whether they're
I don't record wise, is a watch to me. I mean,
I just think I like the coaching style and I
like to play.
Speaker 5 (02:51):
On the floor.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
Have you been there?
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Yeah only I haven't been this year, but I've getten
my reports from my dad and my uncle and my mom.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
Okay, they go every game. You read them too, probably well,
they don't know how to write.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
We need I come from a family of illiterates, save
so I'm the first of my family to learn how
to write.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
My world with you is becoming better.
Speaker 6 (03:12):
Volleyball also had some signings today Hayden Reader outside a hitter,
Marina Voslow middle blocker, and giz Wan Libero slash ds.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
Okay, and they're riding some kind of wave here.
Speaker 6 (03:25):
They're on a three game win streak, including two updates
against number thirteen TCU, number twenty one b YU. They
take on number eight Arizona State tomorrow seven o'clock in Tempe.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
This is a chance to do what they've been doing
against ranked teams. They you know, they're playing well against
the rank teams.
Speaker 6 (03:45):
And when they were here, when the issue was here
in Tucson for that game, Arizona wasn't far off. I
felt like they kind of got into their own heads
started making rookie mistakes. So if they can clean that
up and play a clean game, they they should have
a chance for an upset.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Just real quick, Steve, there's a little notch on the
side of your iPhone that if you push down it,
it silenced your phone.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
I don't know what that means. I like being called
an old dude. You deserve it, You've earned it.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
Go ahead.
Speaker 6 (04:14):
As we've talked about, Arizona basketball is three and o
after there were eighty four forty nine win against NAU.
They take on UCLA this Friday in the Intwit Dome
in l A.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
Yeah, I mean, I'm just going to hit back on
it again. I mean, it really does need to be
a home and away series or a home and home series.
The Phoenix crowd last year, I mean, was better than
what I think the LA crowd is going to be.
But if you're going to do that, then playing San Diego, right,
I mean, if you're playing in Phoenix playing San Diego,
make it.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
Make it a true mutual.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Actually that's not a bad idea in San Diego because
people would you A.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
People would go.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
I think you obviously, I think there's more UA fans,
but I would go to San Diego before I go
to LA.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
I like you.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
You're a smart dude, but I've always told you that.
Now you just kind of come from left field and say,
I don't know if that's possible, but you do come
up with crazy rap.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Yeah, crazy crap.
Speaker 6 (05:02):
In the wind dayne Aristote hit six threes, tying a.
You have a freshman record. I believe names yeah, with
big names. And Matherine, you have to kind of remind
me here, uh.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Selim, Selim, Selim, I've been Natherine seleem.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
Oh there was two more. I can't remember. I wrote
it in the story right there, it's right there.
Speaker 6 (05:23):
No, go ahead, Jared Bayless and Mike Baby Yes, oh yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
Can I remember?
Speaker 5 (05:29):
You know?
Speaker 4 (05:30):
Can I say this? But you can?
Speaker 2 (05:32):
You know you won't have it. Josh Pastor, No one loved.
Not a good start, Vegas in a bad start. Vegas
crushed my Montana last night. It's going like one hundred
and two points against him. He's zero and two against
mediocre teams. I I thought he was a would stay
in as an analyst and not Yeah, not to poop poo.
(05:54):
Who is going on now? But that's not a good sign. Yeah,
I told him, why would you do that anymore? Just
just have a great job and great life doing what
you're doing now. And that's pressure of being a coach
ain't easy. That's what he knows and what he loves.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
Here's the point.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
If I give you fifty thousand dollars, yeah to yell,
it's a lot of us to do with it.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
I don't know if I would take that I don't
want to get screamed and yelled at anymore.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Don't you don't you? I know it's in quality of life. Yeah,
we talk about this with one and others. There's a
point in your life when you think I don't need this.
It's not worth it. Yeah, it's not worth it. Yeah, yeah, go.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
Ahead, Arizona Arizona Football. Quick.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Sorry I didn't mean up no, no, because we're talking aerostoona.
I want to say, do you think that he has
the outside of Dolores of the purest shot on the team.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Let me said, did you so notice his last shot
that he had just kind of all fluid that Yeah, yeah,
he got it and just kind of threw his win.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Just it was just I'm thinking, God, that shot looks nice.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
So I was like, okay, if he stays here he
pops out and the next one he deeks and goes
to the rim and just dunk because he had a
chance for an open lane dunky. At one point I
saw that if he does that, I don't know where
you can stop him. Yeah, because he's a you forget
that he's six eight. Did you have a that temperate
little thing? Did you go on a roll as a
picture like you you have your stuff. Yeah, I just once,
(07:08):
just twice, and then all of a sudden it just
went to crap.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
I'll tell you this.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
I had my stuff one out every five starts, okay, okay,
So then you battle the you battle, you have decent stuff,
and one out every four starts you have to battle
two out of five, and one of those starts you're
just hoping to get through four innings.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Correct. So it's kind of like everything else. You go
in waves.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Yeah, and if you have a gay wave of two
or three, good for you. Yeah, it's it's almost gonna happen, No,
I know. That's why I was asking.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
I think outside of Dolorso and maybe even with the Losso,
just to spend his released the timing of it.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
It's it's pretty pure. Yeah, that was pretty pure on that.
That's why I asked when I turned the cheer and
I said, did you know this? And he said no,
wouldn't you have known it already?
Speaker 4 (07:50):
If this is his shot? Wouldn't you think that's his shot? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (07:54):
One? What is?
Speaker 3 (07:55):
What are his measurables compared to Carter Bryant? Same height
right post six eight? I believe so he's more. He's
a better looking athlete, not that that means anything. Yeah,
but I think Carter has a higher series. Yeah, I
totally maybe. I don't know that I shouldn't shouldn't miss it.
Speaker 6 (08:10):
Looks like Dwayne has played basketball only basketball his entire life.
Carter's kind of seems like a multi sport and he
kind of fits that. He said, like he looks like
a tight end kind of so looks like a pure
basketball What did you think when he spoke to us
last night?
Speaker 2 (08:24):
He was kind of funny, kind of like a street
to the point, very to the point.
Speaker 6 (08:29):
For a matter of fact, this business as usual. Yeah yeah,
how'd you feel when you're watching it?
Speaker 4 (08:35):
I was passed? Yeah, okay, very dry, very to the point. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
Yeah, but good but good. I mean he's got a
mix of everything.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
Yeah, it was on. I mean, how many places that
kid lived in? Yeah? I have no idea. Yeah, sorry,
but he was very honest with refreshing.
Speaker 6 (08:52):
Arizona football is back in action on the road. Gets
your breakfast burritos ready, Steve ten o'clock kick off against
number twenty five Cincinnati FS one transfer.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
Yes and upset. Yeah, yeah, chis spread. I believe it's
Cincinnati by six. That's about that's average. That's fair.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
Yeah, the comma will be staying with me. I'll be
watching it from the bit, probably couch.
Speaker 6 (09:18):
I'll be setting my alarm for nine fifty nine.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
Smart, Okay.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
I wish I don't know if you're like this. I
wish I could sleep in. Oh, I mean it's five thirty.
If I get in at six thirty, like, I'm thrilled.
But I'm up at five thirty no matter what my brains,
What are you doing with that time? I've got a
morning routine. It's none of your business. Okay, in my garden,
that's something that he's never worked out.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
Different.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Yeah, but waking up, I mean hopefully if not dead,
so I'll just find out replacement. Yeah yeah, Blake's late.
No from waking up, he's dead. Okay, go ahead, man,
look at us. Some college basketball scores.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Last night.
Speaker 6 (09:56):
Michigan survived a scare in an eighty five eighty four
win against way Forest. Louisville got his first win against
Kentucky in a heat in a pretty heated rivalry. Wow,
what was the score there? In ninety six eighty eight?
That was in Louisville in Louisville, the first win since
two twenty nineteen. Florida survived a scare seventy eight seventy
six against Florida State.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Okay, what does that mean to Arizona's victory over Florida?
Speaker 3 (10:19):
That doesn't Okay, in Florida's gonna be Florida's going to
be really good at the end of the year.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
That's all it matters. Like I said, they won the
game last week. Yeah, when they when you were leaving
the stadium at T Mobile, what'd you think?
Speaker 4 (10:30):
What are you thinking? What do you mean?
Speaker 3 (10:33):
And I'm not going to play craps anymore because I
don't want to lose. We're going to be very good
if you have one job. I've already talked about it.
We're gonna be ready.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
God Man Hammer, who will be my next guest, is
calling me on myself.
Speaker 4 (10:43):
Yeah, when he should be calling the studio. But so,
did you think, oh God, we're gonna be great? No,
I I November. I left.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
We laughed talking about it was a really well played
game for your first game of the year against the
Ranian national championship. I didn't we didn't go. They're winning
a national championship I'm also you, so I know that's
not a realistic outlook, right, I was going to ask
you something we were just talking about.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
This is really good radio Louisville, Kentucky. Right, yep.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
Yeah, So you're you're looking at those rivalries. Is that
rivalry game happening a little too early or is that.
Speaker 6 (11:19):
I think I think it usually happens a little bit
later in the season. Yeah, because it little obviously usually
means more more towards the end of the season. But
I think that's just due to conference scheduling nowadays. You
want to play your entire conference to end your season,
to say, yeah, we're the best team in this conference.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
Got it.
Speaker 6 (11:37):
Phoenix Sun's guard Daylan Green will be reevaluated in four
to six weeks for a right hamstring strain. This happened
last Saturday over the Clippers, but the team announced it yesterday.
So a team that's kind of on a role playing
with confidence missing one of their better players.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
I love you one. You get it. You get it.
Speaker 6 (11:56):
The fact that I didn't say momentum because you get
it's confidence more. Phoenix Sun's guard Bradley Beal will have
season inning hip surgery for he's on the Clippers now, so.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
They're like cursed. They just are.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
I mean, I feel like, you know, when you sign
James Harden, things kind of fall into this game. I mean,
I'm sorry. You look at the the poop trail that
he's left at every single team that he's gone to.
Speaker 4 (12:22):
It's the same thing.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
Yeah, Bradley Beal is a weird one to me too,
Like you were one of you were at one point
one of the elite guards in the league. And I
mean the son's made a terrible trade to get him anyway,
or pick him up and keep him well.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
I mean, Phoenix, Phoenix itself is just kind of crushed professionally.
The Cardinals suck, sons are cursed or whatever. I thought
got to get into the season though didn't. Okay, okay,
you make the playoffs there.
Speaker 6 (12:54):
Phoenix is a city with a lot of momentum, but
not a lot of confidence, not.
Speaker 4 (12:59):
A lot of success. That makes sense.
Speaker 6 (13:01):
The NBA has presented a new All Star game format.
Maybe we'll talk. I'm not going to go deep into
please God wait, because because I know Blake's here, that's
the reason going to go into it.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
I'd rather want to the NFL. NFL let's go to
the NFL stupid All Star Game.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
What is the point of the NBA All Star Game?
It makes zero sentence to the NFL.
Speaker 6 (13:24):
The Jazz are starting Jamis Winston at quarterback against the Packers.
Jackson dart Is in the concussion protocol.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (13:32):
This comes after their firing of their head coach, So
maybe they're packing a little bit. Yeah, you're looking.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
What I mean, it's it's wild what their Daniel's doing
with Indianapolis. Can we talk real quick though, because I
did want to talk about present and uh, Murray right
does Murray doesn't see the field the rest of the year?
Speaker 1 (13:51):
Now? Right?
Speaker 4 (13:52):
How long is yell? I think he's a healthy scratch.
I think it's at this point three more weeks, probably more.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
It doesn't it's somewhat of a healthy scratch. How would
you when you dropped? How would you think this guy
would be good? What was arguably the best athlete in
the country. That's gibe you number five overall? Yeah, I
mean athletics, So you don't so you don't know until
you know. So you get him in a.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
Proven track record of two his big schools. Right, yikes,
I would have never touched it. Mike, Mike, I would
have still probably, I don't know if I regret making that.
The regret that I have for if I'm a if
I'm a Cardinals fan, is resigning him and having to
put into the contract that you have to watch game film.
Right What are you resigning a guy that you had
to force him to watch game film?
Speaker 4 (14:35):
Now you know his deficiencies, right, Yeah?
Speaker 3 (14:36):
And then you get Brisette, Who's I mean he had
some games in New England that you go, maybe this
is a dude looking at right now you're going, we
are We're a good team.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
Like what are we doing? It's confusing to me and
I'm not a Cardinals fan. But anyway, the.
Speaker 6 (14:51):
Next NFL game is tomorrow, Thursday Night Football. Just stick
on the Patriots six orteen on Prime Video. Aulio snoozer.
Speaker 4 (14:58):
But with that that you just snuck in probably a snoozer.
You ready to go?
Speaker 5 (15:05):
Yep?
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Okay, we're gonna Jeff Hammerschmidt, So expect some bombs maybe,
but you won't hear them because we've got the buzzer
right here.

and then catch up the glen and see everybody coming
down and Eugene Hardy from guys everywhere. I mean, then
I go I stopped Friday before in the football office
(20:56):
and and it's just you see salive A and Seecoul
and just all the guys that have been around forever,
Ronnie Palmer and and I think that Brent's done a
great job of getting the alums back on the staff.
But also you know, there's a there was was a
bunch of happy dudes. It was awesome, especially when won.
Speaker 3 (21:13):
Yeah, I got to see Glenn last I actually was
in Vegas. I got to pull him aside and talk
to him little. Yeah, con Parker, Uh, what's your what's
when you come home like that? What's the one thing
that you know that you always look forward to? I
mean seeing the guys obviously, is probably number one. What's
your number two?
Speaker 5 (21:28):
Then? Yeah, just you know, but it's the most It's
just the biggest thing of seeing the guys, I mean,
and then you know, going to dirt bags. I guess
it's just the one thing. But uh we got that
out of the way early and then but yeah, no,
it's just seeing the guys and seeing how how I mean,
it was awesome they have. They have great chemistry. That
group that that that was was stopping by Friday and
(21:50):
seeing everybody, and you know, seeing even like coach Kendrea.
You know, should I came up and I'm shoot, I
came up and you know, hug him and he you know,
we took pictures together and and I love that. It
was funny.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
No, okay, okay, what what's your place to eat when
you show up?
Speaker 5 (22:10):
Uh? I'm up at Uh what is that? No? No,
I didn't even eat it bags that they just forced
me to drink beer. But uh, what line a line Tatata?
I kind of we have some friends that live up there,
and so we I go to Linekatata and it's what
is the Mexican food place? I love Blanco? Yeah, okay, yep,
(22:32):
so I hit Blanco and that's that's kind of my
one thing I have to do and then and then
go to some prince. Usually I stay atla Ploma too,
which is great. Uh didn't do it this time around,
but stayed with some friends. But it was Yeah, I
love it. I love it for kind of we have
our house set to go there.
Speaker 2 (22:52):
So what what did you see from the team? Besides
the wind.
Speaker 5 (22:57):
Yeah, you know that. To me, the biggest thing is,
like we talked about a long while back, but the
chemistry of the team of those guys. Because my daughter
goes to see you Boulder, so I've been to a
couple of games. I went and watched Arizona kick the
heck out of to you, and my daughter wasn't very happy.
But you could see that there's, you know, a team
(23:18):
like a CEU who's who should be great and they
and they have some moments, but they just they seventy
two new guys on their team this year, and they
just they have a hard time with chemistry and all that.
And then you see our locker room and guys jumping
around and hugging each other and just that the chemistry
that they've built is to me, is huge and that's
(23:41):
why I kind of I kind of walk. That's why
I like Friday going to practice and you know, seeing
all those guys. But yeah, no, it's just there. I mean,
the running game is great. The FETA is that. That
guy is amazing. He's I'm not saying he's better than
Keith Smith, but he's right there. He could grow, he
could on he can he's good. And and then those
(24:02):
running backs they got it. They got a couple of
guys that are really really good. So I mean, and
Kansas is no, Kansas is good. I mean, they're big,
strong upfront, run the ball and we shoot. We stopped him.
And then at the end of the game when it
all mattered, we scored on a on his own play.
(24:23):
So it was it was awesome fun to watch.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
Let me say this. We talked about this yesterday because Wrafita,
by the end of the day will have end of
the year or whatever his career. He'll be the best
quarterback to come through in terms of stats, right, and
he may not be Nick Foles better mine.
Speaker 5 (24:37):
Wait a minute, wait, wait a minute, the factor in
mind much for thirty some yards.
Speaker 4 (24:41):
Yes, you were checked out for a long time ago.
Speaker 5 (24:44):
Oh that's right, Yeah, yeah, yeah, never mind, never mind.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
Yeah, you and and I think, uh heeth pray the
late great Heath pray.
Speaker 5 (24:51):
He pray me and he pray. Yes he killed it.
He he what a luxury.
Speaker 2 (24:56):
Yeah, he will have the biggest nummers best numbers. But
he's no Nick Foles, right, But he's the perfect guy,
maybe for this team and maybe for Brennan and maybe
the previous coaches, in the sense that he's like Brock Purty,
you don't need anybody spectacular, We don't any six foot
three guys. He gets the guy steady, and he gets
him to win and move forward with him.
Speaker 5 (25:17):
True, yep, yep, yep, true, he is. He's kind of
like a combination of who is the Cardinals guy that
played at Oklahoma that he's been hurt. That's the smaller
guy that's tough as heck. Anyway, No, like, what's his name.
Speaker 4 (25:34):
For the Cardinals, it would be.
Speaker 5 (25:36):
Maybe, no, no, not Mayfield. Mayfield is the same way
that guy is the same. He's a competitive you know,
you get the ball in his hand at the end
of the game, he's going to drive down the field
and they're going to score and and uh yeah, and
then the Cardinals had that other guy who was again,
smaller guy, that very athletic. He's hurt now he's not
playing right now, but he's he is good. Murray, yes,
Kyler Murray. Yeah. So though he's like that, he they
(25:58):
just they just hard to gain plan for you, you know,
all of a sudden and everything breaks down. All the
coverages are really perfect. He just takes off and runs.
I mean he's and he and he could throw it.
I mean, god, dang, I mean I could run like him,
but I could not throw like him. He is no,
he's but he is, but he's special. And those guys
you could tell they really believe in them. They're they're
(26:20):
they're running through on their routes and they're finishing routes
and they're not giving up on them. And uh yeah,
they're they're it's a special group. It's and then they'd
be in the locker room right afterwards, just fun to be.
It's a fun group.
Speaker 3 (26:31):
Do you see a lot of same qualities in coach
Brennan you you had with uh Tony dick Tomy.
Speaker 5 (26:39):
Yeah, you know, I think that's he has a lot
and he's been around to some other coaches too. I mean,
but he's but coach Tony is instilled in all of us.
I mean it's like, yeah, it's like you come out
of you, you know, it's yeah, he just he's just
a special person. And Brennan had a chance. He worked
for him here Arizona, I say here, but Arizona, San
(27:01):
Jose State were all together and Coach told me was
the same and and he never changed. And that was
and that's what the great thing about some of those
guys and all the guys on the staff. I mean,
you look at Jose Alivea, He's he's a coach told
me guy through and through. All those guys believe in
all that stuff. Uh that he says, which is one
hundred percent, but it's it's what coach told me would
have done. You know. I'm sure at the end of
(27:22):
the day he probably sits back and goes, how would
Dick handle this situation? And and uh, and he's been
so you know, I can't say enough about that guy.
But yeah, no, he's he's Brendan's got that in him.
He's he's done a great job. But I think the
best thing he's done is build that staff and with
with those Dick Tomy type guys that are believers and
those guys are and they're doing a great job.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
So you coached, you played it as a dB back
in the day, you coached the that that position.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
What do you make of Arizona's guys.
Speaker 5 (27:55):
The secondary? I you know, I can't. I can't. I
can't say I studied the guys enough to say say,
but but but if they're yeah, I don't, I don't know.
I can't say that I know enough to say. I
watched that I was just some kind of the fan,
and when I got to the game this week, I
was I was a little bit more of a fan.
Uh So, I so I hung out with a lot
(28:17):
of guys and didn't pay attention to a lot of
the football except when we scored a touchdown. But but yeah,
I don't. Yeah, I don't know. I mean, I they're
but they're coached by you know, you got Cecil and
helping out back there and all that. So it's they're
they're I mean, they're obviously solid. If if if they're
doing what they're doing, what.
Speaker 3 (28:34):
Do you think is missing from today's game that would
be beneficial for comparatively to when you played?
Speaker 5 (28:43):
Uh? I, I I'm a total disbeliever in the portal.
Uh yeah, I just because I think you there's teams
like I don't know, there's teams like that are that
are that are great and they get you just buy
your players and all of a sudden, smu and is
in the final four every time in Indiana who has
(29:05):
tons of money, they're in the final four. And you
could buy your players and player and guys are it's
hard with the chemistry. Again, I just state the chemistry thing,
but it's it's hard when you have when you're buying
a guy that comes in and fills the spot of
a guy that's been there forever, and all the other
guys are like, who's this guy? And you just kind
of it's hard. It's like recruiting JC junior college guys
(29:27):
and they come in immediately, try and plug them in
and sometimes they are not the best guy. And that's
the frustrating thing. And when I for me, when I
love everything else about it, but that the portal thing
is is is hard. It's hard to swallow. But there
hopefully they'll come up with a way to make it
a little bit even So.
Speaker 3 (29:48):
With that being said, because I do a quick second
part because you brought it up, and you said, you know,
the chemistry and the in the locker room between these guys,
how do you build that when you have to deal
with the transfer portal of how having half your team
being new almost every single year, if not more, How
do you build that chemistry? And what is the most
important thing to do when you can when you when you.
Speaker 5 (30:08):
Have Yeah, I don't know, I don't know. I mean,
it's just it's hard to do. I mean, I guess
you have to figure out's the NFL thing. It's just
the same thing the NFL goes through. I guess because
they're doing the same. But I you know it, I
don't know it. It's as hard you have to do enough.
I mean, you could be as good and and and
a and a great teammate and you're on and you're
(30:30):
the starting left tackle or something, and and all of
a sudden you're you're replaced by somebody or you know,
you get to the end of the year and you
start going, well, I'm not I'm the starting left tackle.
I'm not making as much as the starting right guard right,
and then all of a sudden they just start, you know,
everything is kind of when I went to the when
(30:50):
I went to the CU game and you're watching the
chemistry of those guys, I'm just kind of now I'm
stuck in this whole thing on chemistry. But what you
watch their puddle and they have three different starting quarterbacks,
rotating quarterbacks, and this quarterbacks are rolling their eyes at guys.
The guy drops the ball, comes up to say, you
know whatever, probably said he's sorry, but then he shoves him.
I mean stuff like that. You just don't have that
(31:13):
anymore where you're a group of guys that come in
and and uh and everyone's on the same scholarship and
stuff like that. So I don't know, but it's yeah,
I don't It's tough. It's tough.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
That's the thing that concerned me before all this nil
stuff started with three, four or five years ago. I'm thinking,
if Jeff's making X amount of money and I'm his
partner next next to him, and I'm making X amount
of money that's not being paid from Jeff. Like that,
let's say center or or the center in the quarterback,
and I open holes for the for the quarterback, and
I'm getting paid whatever, but not as much as the quarterback.
(31:46):
I think it'd be a little and this is probably
more reflection.
Speaker 5 (31:49):
Yeah, yeah, like it's like, yeah, it's like you guys.
And then then one of you guys is making more
than the other. I'm sure you're I'm sure you're pissed
out of them when you leave the office.
Speaker 4 (31:58):
I can't stand more.
Speaker 12 (32:00):
You can't.
Speaker 5 (32:01):
But you can't believe it that Steve makes all that money.
And then you're like, why does.
Speaker 4 (32:04):
He get that money?
Speaker 2 (32:05):
Right?
Speaker 5 (32:06):
And then you're.
Speaker 4 (32:10):
I call him home time night at night sometimes.
Speaker 5 (32:12):
No doubt, I'm sure you do to run him off
the road. There's a pincheck coming as you do.
Speaker 4 (32:17):
So Jeff, how much? How much was Jeff Hammersmith made?
Back to the day I did?
Speaker 5 (32:23):
I tell you I thought what I when I started
my first day, my first time with coaching, it was like,
I think I made coach. Tomy hired me and I
made twenty four thousand dollars a year. And then I
went to UH to where oh I went with Ellerson.
Then I go to Ellerson with Ellerson and to UH
Southern Utah to be a decordinator. And then Rich goes.
(32:44):
No one knew, no one knew my salary, and they said,
so Rich Goes, Hey, you know hammer, you know, I
want you to come with me. You know, how much
do you make here? And he goes, and he was
probably expecting me to say, you know, like forty thousand, coach,
fifty thousand whatever, And I said, well, twenty four thousand.
He goes, oh, well, okay, I'm gonna pay you twenty five. No,
(33:05):
I should have sad, I said. The next time I'm
bargained like that. It was in Indiana and I said,
how much you're making it? Wherever? I was with Rich
at cal poly Or and I said, He goes, how
much you're making? And I'm like, okay, I got this
one before. I made about one ten. And he goes,
there you go, we'll pay you the same. I'm like,
I got a lot smarter a lot.
Speaker 4 (33:25):
That's great. All right, you want to go out? Okay.
Speaker 3 (33:28):
Last question, so, uh, coming into and being at dirt Bags,
what's the fondest memory that comes back to your mind?
And does it still smell like vomit and urine?
Speaker 5 (33:39):
And oh, I don't know. I couldn't. I uh uh memory,
dirt you can there's lots of good, lots of good stories. No, no,
I yeah, I don't know. I can't I mean, I
don't remember half the time I left it, so it
(33:59):
was I mean I remember the the you know, getting
cutting in line, and then one time it was who
who was? Oh they just I think Brian. I shouldn't
take the name, but I think Brian Williams, I'll say it.
The basketball players was in there, and that was my
most That was like the biggest pert. I was like, hey,
he's a big time guy. I mean he was in
(34:20):
between him and Cecil being in dirtbags. That was. Yeah.
Nothing really, I'd always just hang out there a little bit.
I was kind of friends with the attornity. My roommate
was Tom Quinn and Tom was he played for US
but he was an SAE that so those guys were
always there and so but yeah, Dirtbegs was fun. It
was it is a part of growing up and the
same people are still there. You go work in and
(34:42):
there's two or three people that are the same people
and I'm like, that's the greatest thing ever. So and
I think one of the times I walked in and
they had my credit card from back in the day
and it was still I think it was still open.
Speaker 13 (34:58):
I think they left it open.
Speaker 4 (35:00):
Cheers and nob hey Hammer.
Speaker 5 (35:02):
Yeah, exactly. I walk in. I walked in every year
about the same time, and the same guy, Mark is
the manager, and I'm like, he's the same he looks
the same way everything and he just he just smiles
and hey, here you go get a beer. Yeah, that's beautiful.
I love that type of stuff and being around all
that group general bands, we hit general all that fun stuff.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
Great, thanks man, thanks and all right you guys, yes,
ye anytime, Yeah, thanks Hammers Jeff hammersmid he was pretty late,
pretty tame there.

Speaker 4 (39:49):
Just come and call and joke with us.
Speaker 6 (39:51):
Let us know what you think of men's basketball. Yeah,
men's basketball going to UCLA. Okay, So now you're Utah
Tech and you're n AU. Those are history. Those are history.
They got about. Who else do they have coming up
to Alabama?
Speaker 11 (40:06):
No?
Speaker 2 (40:06):
No, no, the non Yukons and North Dakota State. So
they're not competing against those dudes. You're measuring yourself against
the Yukons, the u c l As, the Alabama's and
then the Big Twelve because that's who you're going to
be playing in March.
Speaker 3 (40:23):
Have you talked to Tommy about his scheduling? And I
don't want to mean this in a rude way by
any means, but I mean those are peaks and valleys
from a talent level. Is that something that he planned?
Speaker 4 (40:34):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
I know that he planned the big games, but I
think you do have to kind of schedule these others. No, no,
I understand, but just to your point, No, yeah, no,
I think he just puts it together.
Speaker 4 (40:44):
Loot did the same thing.
Speaker 2 (40:45):
But because you have to have those teams come in
and you know, pay them X amount of money to
come in and you know.
Speaker 4 (40:49):
Be the Washington generals.
Speaker 2 (40:51):
I mean, yea, you do because you can't play that
big schedule you know what would be perfect in Tucson,
because I think that's who gets gets stiffed, you guys,
because you know we talking about all the time.
Speaker 3 (41:01):
I mean from a fans standpoint, I've got to now
watch all these games happening on TV at neutral sites
when I'm paying for like, and I get it, We're
we're spoiled because of the Big twelve, Right, We're spoiled
now because that's where you pay for the tickets. Absolutely,
and we're going to get see Auburn this year and
we'll see Yukon next year. But watching them play neutral
site games against these like I'm We're going to go
(41:24):
to Phoenix to watch San Diego State? Like why why
aren't you playing in the Tucson Like it's a frustrating thing, right,
and then you're going to a stadium where it's half
full and it doesn't have an atmosphere.
Speaker 4 (41:35):
No, you're right. I saw that on Twitter last night.
Speaker 2 (41:37):
Did you see that on and some guys his wife,
I appreciate him, tell us to go buy tickets, but
we're already invested in the in the Yeah, you don't tell.
Speaker 3 (41:45):
You don't tell season ticket home or ticket season ticket
holders to go buy tickets for a neutral site game
and another city like That's it's not a good way
to tell your fans.
Speaker 4 (41:54):
I think his target audience was LA the game San Diego.
Speaker 3 (42:01):
If it's a neutral site game, we're playing in Phoenix,
they should be playing in San Diego. And you're gonna
get more of a u A fan base anyway.
Speaker 4 (42:06):
So I totally agree with you. That's a good thought.
Speaker 3 (42:07):
I told you this when we were in when when
we were my wife and I were in uh Norcl, No,
when we were in norcl, we watched we went to
the cow game, in the Stanford game when it was
last year of the PAC twelve and seventy percent of
the fans. It's not seventy five percent of the fans.
We're all uve A fans, Yeah, of course, right, there's
a huge following. Yeah, and it's not that they travel, well,
that's where they live. Yeah, they that they went to
the u A and then went back. Yeah, you maybe
(42:28):
they're from Tucson. They moved over there because we're an
exporter of talent. Right, So no, it is what it is.
And you've said that amediately is it's those that's a
factual statement. That's on me just being an angry person.
But you're right, which I am an a person. Well,
welcome to my world. Where will we go with this idea?
Speaker 4 (42:45):
UCLA?
Speaker 2 (42:46):
Oh, the big teams, I mean, yeah, they're not competing
against Utah Texas. That gives them exciting reason to get
better and watch how they play together. But you're measured
in March against the big teams. The big teams but
you're worried about is the first round because they're not
the big teams. The second round and then when you
get the sweet sixteen, that's when you'll be measured.
Speaker 5 (43:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (43:07):
And I think, Tommy, I think they've done a great
job of the pre conference scheduling and then going into
the conference. I mean, goodness, gracious, the Big twelve is daunting.
Yeah right, I mean it's every single week, you know,
weekend week out. So yeah, and I get what they're doing.
I just I was wondering if you guys thought that
you're you know, you're going from a top twenty five
team to a bottom twenty five team then top twenty
(43:29):
five PEO, Like, that's such a roller coaster ride.
Speaker 4 (43:32):
I'll give you this. I know this is gonna tang gentle.
Speaker 2 (43:35):
But lout hated the PAC twelve Packed ten tournament Pack
twelve tournament.
Speaker 5 (43:40):
If he was in it.
Speaker 2 (43:41):
I don't know if he was, I don't think it
was because you played a pretty tough schedule. He'd hate
this because you go and play the best of the
best for three months, yeah, and then have to play
a tournament and then have to play the tournament.
Speaker 4 (43:55):
Yeah, and who knows. And we talked about this last year.
Speaker 2 (43:59):
You played this great schedule, and how beat up are
you gonna be by the time you get to the tournament.
Speaker 3 (44:04):
That's why I mean it sounds ridiculous, But playing guys
like Evan Nelson five to eight minutes a game when
you're getting to that stage, there's that. It speaks volumes
to how to rest guys. Yeah, you know what I mean,
A good point. I agree with you. Can we talk
about baseball just really quick? Because I listen, I just
I try to sneak this in. But we talked about
this off air, and I do.
Speaker 4 (44:24):
I am.
Speaker 3 (44:25):
I am confused very much so from the class A
Emmanuel class A gambling thing. And my dad and I
were talking about last night at the UFA basketball game,
like you're gambling on just throwing a ball? That, I mean,
that's what he was doing. It's not like he was
throwing games. It's not like he's like, oh, I gotta
give up a two run shot because you can't do
that basketball.
Speaker 4 (44:45):
You can do that.
Speaker 3 (44:45):
I can miss a three pointer and airball at it.
I control that shot, and I'm good enough to do it.
Speaker 4 (44:50):
But he threw away his whole life.
Speaker 3 (44:52):
He's never gonna play in the big leagues ever again
for like three hundred thousand dollars, maybe less than that,
maybe a little bit more. But you threw away he
was going to be paid fifty million dollars plus. Why
what is the what is the reasoning behind that?
Speaker 5 (45:08):
Right?
Speaker 3 (45:08):
The poker game, the NBA, that all this stuff, there's
a bigger thing there. This guy was choosing to throw
a strike or a ball. It just doesn't That doesn't
mean anything to me, Like that's that I don't get it.
Speaker 2 (45:19):
I hope this question is rhetorical because you don't know
what they're thinking.
Speaker 4 (45:22):
Let me ask you this question, why would you do it?
Speaker 3 (45:25):
Like, would there be any circumstance in your life, either
one of you and one you're young because you don't
know crap about life yet, but you will at some point.
Well would you ever? What's what's the circumstances you would
do it? No, let me throw this at you.
Speaker 5 (45:37):
Up.
Speaker 2 (45:37):
So you remember the movie with with the Sting. No, no,
it was leaving Las Vegas. It was Will Will his
son was ill, was ill. Then they had to use
the insurance that wasn't their insurance and blah blah blah.
Speaker 3 (45:52):
I can't remember. Oh, I think you're talking about Denzel Washington.
Maybe the son's sick in the hospital. Maybe it was
maybe with No Confused Will was with the homeless guy
living in the bathroom. Yeah, so your guy. So you're
trying to save your your son's life and you used
So that would be the circumstance where you need money.
Now you got to figure out how to save your
son's life. Understood. Yeah, yeah, got it to your point. Yeah,
(46:15):
I think it is Will Smith. Now Denzel Washington's when
his sons sick and he's in the hospital and there
he's holding up the hospital, holding the hospital hospital. It
might have been Will, that's what I thought. But Pursuit
of Happiness, Yeah, that's that's a different movie. What was
the Pursuit of Happenings? So you're talking about the one
where he's homeless, right, yeah, okay, then you're right, that's
Will Smith. I thought you were talking about where he
held the whole hospital hostage. Well, no, no, it might
(46:36):
have been that one. I think it might be. I
think he's mixing two movies up.
Speaker 4 (46:41):
Well, you guys got this collage you want me to review?
Speaker 1 (46:45):
What?
Speaker 3 (46:46):
Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna guess that you're not.
Speaker 2 (46:49):
A sinem so, but you asked me. You asked me that.
That's okay, That's all I want to know.
Speaker 3 (46:54):
If there was a circumstance, and that is a valid circumstance,
if the President of the United States called and say,
I'm riding a screenplay see that movie?
Speaker 2 (47:04):
Yeah, would you push the button? Uh man, save your family?
What what are we looking forward to this weekend in sports? Well,
early morning football game bro Breakfast Burritos. Come on Early
morning Football Breakfast burritos anyway. Yeah, you getting up early,
so you have to bring me one by baseball, football,
basketball late?
Speaker 4 (47:23):
Right? Is it late seven o'clock? Peacock, Peacock, that's it.
Speaker 6 (47:28):
So I was gonna say that actually to your point
about the fans and season ticket holder saying, I already
invest into the season home games. Now you want me
to go get neutral side tickets. But even for those
that don't travel, now they got to have a Peacock
substriation whatever.
Speaker 3 (47:42):
Yeah, I mean you have to go through multiple subscriptions
at this point, right, so.
Speaker 6 (47:46):
Yes, p a spam plus it is the Peacocks, the
Fox Sports.
Speaker 4 (47:51):
Yeah. And then even if you're already paying for a
general TV.
Speaker 5 (47:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (47:54):
And the concept of streaming when it first started was
that it was going to be affordable and you could
find more things in one place. And now it's not
a horrible and you have to go to you know,
thirty different ones. It's just the same as cable. That's
all we are. We're gullible human, are you telling me? Yeah,
I'm shocked. We were talking about the good old days.
When Hulu first started, it was like Napster. Everything was free, right.
One you'd get a Napster of reference in college at
(48:16):
some point. That's how That's how I got through college. Yeah, absolutely,
I loved my Space. Do you know what we're talking about?
Speaker 5 (48:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (48:25):
My Space? Okay, vintage? No you didn't, did you?
Speaker 5 (48:29):
Really?
Speaker 6 (48:30):
It was eight I didn't know what I was.
Speaker 4 (48:35):
And I was in the womb.
Speaker 3 (48:36):
So technically, I mean, we've got some big things happening
in our region that I think people should go out
and t a chance too. So you get Borderlands Gravel
in Douglas. That's the first international cross border dirt bike
or gravel race. Pretty exciting. And then you've got Garment
coming to town, huge, huge sports company will be here
on Saturday to run their first, uh first, their own
(48:59):
their own set of marathon and they're gonna run their
second one that they first one was in Toledo, now
they're gonna be Tucson. Do you know the people? But
just want do you know anything? Do I know all
three thousand runners?
Speaker 1 (49:09):
No?
Speaker 11 (49:09):
No?
Speaker 2 (49:09):
No, exactly what it is? Thank you forgiving me to number?
Is that what it is?
Speaker 5 (49:13):
I think?
Speaker 2 (49:13):
So that's what Toledo was. Okay, you think that will
happen here?
Speaker 5 (49:17):
I do?
Speaker 4 (49:17):
Steve?
Speaker 2 (49:18):
Wow, is that a success? I think it is. Yeah,
Oh wow, you're giving me anterwest that I did. What
was the for El Tour? What was the first number
they had for the first El Toro? You're talking five
hundred people? Yeah, so I think it's a success and
you're back by. I want to talk to Sporting Company
nineteen eighty three. I'm talking yeah, twenty twenty five. Yeah,
you were sixty. Let me ask you something. I was sixty.
(49:41):
I was sixty.
Speaker 4 (49:41):
I bet you were on screen there. Hey up, can
I throw a question at you? You probably don't going
to tell me to shut up? Should I say?
Speaker 7 (49:50):
No?
Speaker 4 (49:50):
I mean, what's my Mexican baseball team gonna play? No comment? Yeah?
I figured as much. Yeah, we're working through it. I think.
Speaker 2 (50:00):
I mean, you're staying as it stands now, they've got
momentum not to play.
Speaker 4 (50:07):
Sad to say, well, I mean, there's it's the.
Speaker 3 (50:12):
I'm probably probably response now, and I'm gonna be very
smart about my response.
Speaker 4 (50:18):
Uh. There's a lot of positives coming back to us
about what's going on. That's good.
Speaker 3 (50:22):
Yeah, and so it's out of it's out of our control.
When does the season end?
Speaker 5 (50:26):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (50:27):
End of December? So they have the playoffs in January time,
we have time. How are they doing to this point?
Middle of the road? What does that mean?
Speaker 2 (50:35):
Record wise? Middle of the road? Nine to nine eighty seven?
There you go, five hundred four and five and five?
What are you doing record?
Speaker 4 (50:44):
I want to know the record already. I'm asking. I
have the source in front of me. How do you
want to dance?
Speaker 2 (50:50):
No? Could you just check my appointment book? What the
hell you're gonna make me?
Speaker 5 (50:54):
Cus?
Speaker 4 (50:56):
You are not gonna cuss on the radio?
Speaker 2 (50:58):
No, I can't. I like this job. I wish I
could should turn into a podcast. But you know what
I'm saying. They are already eighteen games in the are
the ten games in?
Speaker 4 (51:09):
I think they're twelve games in? Oh, they're still in
the early stages. Do they have that website?
Speaker 5 (51:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (51:16):
Best luck with that. I mean, let me say this.
Speaker 2 (51:19):
There was much anticipation locally to see some good bass.
I think there still is and and yeah, and to
this point it hasn't happened. If there still is good,
good for them. I'm not trying to pooh poo it.
I'm just wondering because I think that's a good question
for me asking you right for I mean, you are
they what's the question? I mean, I didn't like.
Speaker 3 (51:41):
I'm not following them probably the way I should because
they're not playing here, so it doesn't feel like they're
are home team right now? They are, but there aren't,
right right? Okay, So the question is from a general
public stance, we the rain out with Arizona Fall League, right,
We had nothing to do with That's that's nature. They're
all set, right, What a great what a great relationship
that we have with them. They've been phenomenal. We went,
(52:03):
we had our we had our group go up to
Phoenix to see them with the home run der. We
do all that stuff with a Tucson baseball team. Does
this hurt our view of professional baseball and in Tucson?
And should I pick a different line of work? Then
I'm assuming that I'm gonna say this. You're reading too
much into it. I think it'll be fine if it
gets fixed. But the thing is when will it get fixed?
Speaker 4 (52:24):
Is it a black guy? Not really a person?
Speaker 3 (52:26):
Again, if this was directed to a specific person for
a reason, I would say it's more of a black guy.
The circumstances were out of everybody's control on both sides, right, right, fixable? Fixable, fixable,
then there's no fixable, one hundred percent for fixable, no harm,
noul foul, except for the time we're living right now.
Speaker 4 (52:46):
Is that good?
Speaker 5 (52:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (52:46):
No, thanks for throwing me under the bus too. At
the end, Hopeful, I backed up to a couple of times.
Speaker 2 (52:52):
I think is gonna lose a Saturday. Okay, I don't
disagree with you. What are you looking at me for?
I trust one. I'm just going with one. That's whatever
one says. Running me over in your your your your van. Thanks, everybody,
Talk to you guys tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (53:09):
Wear sunscreen, yes,
