Speaker 1 (00:00):
A streaming live on the Ihearts Radio WIB. This is

(00:04):
I on the Ball with Steve Rivera on Fox Sports
fourteen fifty eight.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Hey, welcome back to I on the Ball here on
Fox Sports fourteen fifteen.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
I'm Steve Rivera, your tim Hello, Hello, Hello, and now
we have Ray with breaking news.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
This is Eye on the Ball, Breaking News on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty a.

Speaker 4 (00:27):
All right, starting out with a couple of big ones
of today, obviously the basketball men's basketball team heading out
to La tonight to face UCLA Bruins number fifteen, number
against number five in the Experience Hall of Fame Series
Los Angeles game.

Speaker 5 (00:45):
It's gonna be an interesting one.

Speaker 4 (00:47):
Kind of sticking with basketball for a quick second to
five star forward Cameron Williams commits to Duke over Arizona
and Texas.

Speaker 6 (00:56):
So that was he would be like the fourth or
fifth five star kid we have, right, I mean, if
he came here, he'd be like, you have to sit
on the bench of all the five star, five star kids.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Yeah, we'll see.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Obviously, good program, Sean Miller chasing him and now Duke.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
He's going to Duke. Yep, no surprise.

Speaker 4 (01:13):
Yeah, keeping it going though, football team, obviously is another
big story of the weekend. They are playing number twenty
two Cincinnati in Cincinnati at ten am tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Okay, I'm surprised that well, I'm not surprised Jay didn't
go with the game with that game, but what do
you think about his picks?

Speaker 5 (01:39):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (01:39):
I always find a tough time picking against Navy and
the spread just because they limit possessions.

Speaker 6 (01:44):
But I think he didn't pick it because he's going
to be in Vegas and he wants to watch it
without anything. Yeah, that's without any panic. You know, he
wants to be there and Watchington because it's on at
ten am. Or I don't know what tim Vegas is.
He's ten here right, Yes, you know, he probably wants
to not stress it.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
I was surprised both of you guys picked the Rams,
to be honest, because I don't think like, don't get
me wrong, they whooped the Niners on Sunday, but there
was a couple there was like three or four drop
picks by the Niners. I'm like, man, Matt Stafford, he's you.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Know, he's gonna be the m v P. He's one
of them.

Speaker 5 (02:19):
He's pretty good.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Dude, was probably yesterday about daring Judge. Yes, because I
thought the kid from Seattle with yeah, well too, I
thought Rolly would.

Speaker 6 (02:28):
Yeah, he had probably had a run in the season.
You know, but you know everybody talks about it. You know,
you're on the Yankees and the mystique and the aura
and whatever, all all those words. You know, Dan Patrick
talked about it this morning. If they flipped teams. Yeah,
you know, yeah, the Seattle guy.

Speaker 4 (02:46):
When I think another thing too, is are the votes, like,
is like that whole thing decided before the playoffs start?
I think okay, because I was, because if it's not,
then it's like, man, they really did like kind of
screw cal rawl out of it, because it's like, man,
they made it to the ALC playoffs Game seven.

Speaker 7 (03:03):
Against I think they vote before for that very reason.

Speaker 6 (03:06):
Yeah, so you get rewarded for the season rather than
the playoffs.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
Keeping it going.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Though.

Speaker 4 (03:12):
The volleyball team lost last night against ASU, who is
ranked number eight, dropped the match one to three in sets.
They won the second set I think is the one
where they got that one from. And the women's basketball
team will also be playing on Sunday at two pm
here in Tucson. They're playing Grambling State. That'll be fun.

(03:33):
Here's one for you, Tim n Cuba West Regional cross
Country Championships going on in Sacramento right now. Are Well,
it doesn't say a time, but it's happening today. I'm
sure it is already.

Speaker 7 (03:44):
It's e Yu's favored win. So watch that.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Can I ask you a question? I guess I can't
because I have you as a host.

Speaker 5 (03:55):
Now I'm leaving right now.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Why isn't Arizona the cross country the top of line
like it used to be?

Speaker 3 (04:04):
How does that happen?

Speaker 5 (04:06):
You know?

Speaker 6 (04:06):
I was thinking about this, you know Abdy maybe Abdy's
now uh, you know, Bernard Loot came and went Obdy.
I saw him the other day and he's coaching cross
country track at uve is he Yeah, this is his
first season. I saw him and he's okay and yeah,
so they're they're struggling a little bit, you know they
used to be.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
But even before the yeah, it's been a while.

Speaker 6 (04:27):
It's been it's probably been twelve or thirteen years since
left YEP, Dave Murray left and they just lost the pipeline.
They focus on, you know, kind of those elite athletes
in the track on the track side, jumpers, hurdlers and
stuff like that, and they just didn't really you know,
funnel the right kids. And then they had some problems
with their coaches. You know, the women's team, you know,
kind of got sideways with their coach. Well, let me

(04:50):
say it this way. The coach got sideways with those
young with the women's team, and they they said, no,
I'm out.

Speaker 7 (04:55):
So it has a bad rep. I think that obby
is going to help turn it around.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
So this is more that's more of a sport of
you have to be good at at it because you
couldn't look at me twenty five years ago, thirty years ago,
forty years ago. If I'm not a good runner, I'll
just have a good runner. Right, You have to have
good runners one right, how do you make them better runners?

Speaker 6 (05:16):
Well, you know, I'd say this real quickly is when
I coached high school, I could get most kids out
for cross country, and we could get most kids close
to twenty two twenty three minutes, and then good kids
for a five k twenty minutes nineteen eighteen. And once
a kid gets around sixteen minutes between under sixteen, that's
when those kids start to think about it. If they really
want to make a run at it, and it's wherewithal

(05:38):
what is it? You know, it's it's it's it's genetics
a little bit. It's it's a drive and a determination
like every athlete. But once you get into college, it's
a business like every other sport, you know, and it's
you know, it's you really got to pursue it. The
kid I coached in high school, Nico, he understood that
ran at BYU, running professional, living in flag Staff.

Speaker 5 (05:57):
It's a business.

Speaker 4 (05:57):
Yeah, like you said, or like we talked about already,
kind of Aaron Judge won the a L m v
P for the third time in four years and Otani
well show hal Tany from the Dodgers unanimous uh, winner
of fourth m VP in five years.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
So yeah, he won just you know, obvious obvious. The
other side was not so obvious. But who's second for Nash?
I don't I don't think abody got a voked. Yeah,
well it was unanimous.

Speaker 5 (06:32):
Right, so there wasn't anybody.

Speaker 6 (06:33):
You did, Steve with your with your tennis shoes.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
I tried to run.

Speaker 6 (06:42):
No, that guy is so good and that's you know,
he was kind of off pitching because he'd had some
elbow surgery, right, And so I mean, you know, if
he's a pretty good pitcher, you know, combined with being
an excellent hitter, that that guy is gonna win it
every year until he decides not to play anymore.

Speaker 5 (06:58):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (06:59):
Uh, just some just some clean up stuff kind of Uh.
Sam Laporta has been ruled out, so it is JK.

Speaker 5 (07:05):
Dobbins.

Speaker 4 (07:05):
So if you got them in your fantasy leagues, bench
them Warriors or Steph Curry and in his partnership with
under Army. That one kind of came out of nowhere.
I feel like in the last couple of days. Uh,
this was an interesting one. So New Integrity this is
this is the headline from ESPN New Integrity Crisis. Congress
seeks MLB answers on betting. And this is following after

(07:28):
those two pictures from the Guardians, you know, had their opening.

Speaker 7 (07:32):
Those prop bets. Man, that's gonna be tough.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
And I think I think I saw yesterday the NFL
was talking about like almost getting rid of prop bets,
or like debating on getting rid of prop bets for
for the same reason kind of thing. Other than that though,
just looking at the weekend over all, obviously the big game, Well,
the first big game I guess is a Notre Dame

(07:56):
in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 5 (07:56):
That's where game day is gonna be.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
Whole hume game. I think they'd be a little Georgia overt.

Speaker 6 (08:03):
I think they're going for the pageantry of that, you know,
the gold helmets, the history, just you know, and hopefully
it's a little windy and cold, and you know, I
think that's what they're going for, is football, not necessarily
the the game itself.

Speaker 4 (08:18):
In the later window, Oklahoma and Alabama are gonna play.
I think that's gonna probably be a bar and burner.
N C State in Miami. I think that one's gonna
be a good game too, And Iowa and USC in La.
I think that's gonna be an interesting one probably, And
then yeah, I think that's oh Texas and Georgia.

Speaker 5 (08:37):
Obviously it's gonna be a great one.

Speaker 4 (08:39):
And then in the NFL, M just looking Oh man,
it's uh Buccaneers and Bills.

Speaker 5 (08:46):
Yeah, I think that might be good.

Speaker 7 (08:47):
Are they playing in Buffalo? Are they playing in the.

Speaker 5 (08:49):
Other playing in Buffalo?

Speaker 3 (08:51):
Buffalo just looked bad.

Speaker 6 (08:52):
Yeah, they just had a flat game. I'm teasing my friends.
I'm like I'm gonna be on the radio. What should
I say if people talk about the Bills and how
bad they are and it's been crickets on my chat?

Speaker 4 (09:07):
Yeah, like like the game of the week obviously, see
Hawks and Rams, Allen's gonna be good, Chiefs and Broncos,
lines and Eagles, YadA, YadA.

Speaker 5 (09:14):
That's it for me though it comes to breaking news, Okay,
very good. Not a lot of buys this week. I
was looking.

Speaker 6 (09:20):
So we're gonna have a full slate of almost a
full full slate of NFL games.

Speaker 7 (09:24):
I like that when that happens.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
Yeah, games start tomorrow at nine, like you said, right,
yeah nine.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
It was ten.

Speaker 5 (09:32):
We'll see what they started ten tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
Yeah, old games, Ali games, college football, Yeah, okay, because
it's it's difference.

Speaker 5 (09:39):
And stuff.

Speaker 6 (09:40):
Though, Man, you know, I do not like that hour
change because I like NFL football when it starts at
ten in the morning.

Speaker 7 (09:47):
Here you start your.

Speaker 5 (09:48):
Day off pretty good.

Speaker 6 (09:49):
College football when it's on at eight thirty or nine,
You're like, this is a pretty good Saturday.

Speaker 4 (09:53):
That's why I don't think I'd like living on the
East Coast a ton, just because like I don't want
to be I don't want to have to start watching
Sunday night football at eight, you know, I mean, yes,
I don't know if that makes sense, But.

Speaker 6 (10:05):
Well, don't send a more resumes to the East Coast, dude,
and you'll be just fine keeping in that North Dakota.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
If that's the job opening, I know you might have
to work, and.

Speaker 7 (10:16):
I think you'll suffer through, dude, if you get a
cool job out.

Speaker 4 (10:18):
There, I mean I will. It's just you know, it'll
be a cranky there.

Speaker 6 (10:22):
I'm sorry, that's a nice salary range, but you know,
the NFL on Sunday night starts a date.

Speaker 5 (10:26):
I can't do it.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
Sorry, Steve, probably get call Steve. I know you're cranky,
old ude. Were you ever a cranky young guy? Let
me tell you about me?

Speaker 7 (10:35):
Oh it was.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
It was a cool one for basketball tomorrow starting at five?
You call him b YU another top ten match.

Speaker 5 (10:41):
That's good.

Speaker 7 (10:41):
Something didn't something happened at b YU They got the
number one recruit.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
No, but something happened.

Speaker 4 (10:47):
Uh, go ahead, and oh h Davis Junior was arrested
on suspicion of duy.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
Yeah, okay, so what happened? Starting forward?

Speaker 5 (10:56):
I think yes, he is a starting Yeah, at e Yu. Yeah,
provo man, they can't even drink.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
Well, no, they can drink, they're not allowed to, that's
supposed to.

Speaker 8 (11:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (11:07):
That the kid I was talking about, Nico, he went
there b y u and you know, I mean he
enjoyed that, that rigidity of it, but it was it
was he was.

Speaker 7 (11:16):
He was glad to be out of town.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
Yeah. Just because you can't doesn't mean you won't. Doesn't
mean you won't, right.

Speaker 5 (11:23):
Yeah, I've been in some situations like that.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (11:26):
Well didn't Jim McMahon play football there?

Speaker 5 (11:28):
Yeah, yes, there you go.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
What are you saying? Nothing?

Speaker 6 (11:33):
He was really good at p y That's what I'm saying,
really really good quarterback.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Yeah. Well you're not supposed to drink when you're under
twenty one. Yeah, that's for I don't think that happens here.
Of course, you didn't do it.

Speaker 5 (11:45):
Not at all. I wasn't in college when I was
under twenty one.

Speaker 7 (11:49):
He was fighting for our freedom, I know, to drink
beers at eighteen.

Speaker 3 (17:08):
Brian, how are you?

Speaker 15 (17:10):
I'm doing great?

Speaker 5 (17:10):
Thanks for having me headed.

Speaker 3 (17:11):
To take a nap for tonight's game and tomorrow's starting game.

Speaker 15 (17:17):
Yeah, it's a nice little turnaround. With an evening game
and then a morning kickoff. But they're both not here
so don't have to go to them, so it's not
as bad as it would be like last week with
having a basketball game at night and then a football
game the next afternoon.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
Yeah, that's true. Okay, let's talk about tonight's game first.

Speaker 3 (17:37):
What do you think?

Speaker 2 (17:41):
I mean?

Speaker 15 (17:41):
I think that the fact that they've already played a
game like Florida Meet that takes away that shock value
of playing a quality opponent away from home. I think
the environment could be kind of weird. It doesn't sound
like it has the greatest sales for this game out
of the into It Dome, and you would think that

(18:04):
UCLA would have the fan advantage, but in an arena
of eighteen thousand, where I would be surprised if it's
half full. I don't know how much that impacts it,
but I still think that Arizona it has already shown
that they can play comfortably in a large arena with
this team, whereas UCLA has played three by games at
poly Pavilion and I don't think they drew more than

(18:26):
nine thousand for any of them.

Speaker 3 (18:29):
That's not good.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
So we'll see you Tommy prompted them, so we'll see
what happens. It's kind of surprising, although it's not. They
must be getting a lot of money when Arizona plays
in Phoenix. Ucla is now playing into it? Or do
you just just playing at the home courts and you'll
make out well with the tenants.

Speaker 15 (18:46):
Yes, if this had been something that had been specifically arranged.
I think between Arizona and UCLA. That's one thing that
this is like promoters to this Hall of Fame series
and all that, and they figured, you know, wouldn't want
to see Arizona and Ucla in LA. And it's like yes,
but it's everything in general is a hard sell in
LA with so many things going on there. And I

(19:10):
don't know if there's anything else going on on that
Friday night, but it's just it's this part of a
doubleheader in Illinois State against USC is the first game
at I want to say five thirty, so that would
be four thirty in LA. I mean, who's going to
be at that game if you'd have to like leave
in the morning to make sure that you can get
the traffic to get there.

Speaker 6 (19:29):
Hey, Brian, you know I was thinking about this, you know,
this this this argument about.

Speaker 7 (19:33):
Playing home games at home and.

Speaker 6 (19:35):
You know, for the fans, but you want to be
in that in that you know, circle of teams that
gets picked to play in these kind of these, like
you said, these arranged promoter games. I mean, you want
to be that kind of team that is that good
to be able to do that, don't you think?

Speaker 5 (19:51):
Certainly?

Speaker 15 (19:51):
And and there's there's a rotation to it, and I
mean Arizona is usually part of that, but they also
for instance, BYU BYU played it after Arizona in Vegas
against Leanova. They're playing against Yukon in Boston tonight. They're
doing a couple of those because they have the presumptive

(20:13):
number one pick in next year's draft, Ajdabansa. And it's
a marketing and a high profile thing you do it.
It's a combination of teams that you think the casual
college fan wants to see, teams that are high ranking
and teams that have a big name player. And so
Arizona fits the bill into kind of all of those.

(20:34):
But you don't want that to be all of it.
And there is a mix. I mean, they've got four
of these neutral site games. The one they've played the
one tonight. They have Alabama in Birmingham, which is a
return for playing Alabama and Phoenix and then playing San
Diego State up in Phoenix. But they also have a
couple home and homes. They go to Yukon on Wednesday,
the start of one of those series that will come

(20:56):
to Tucson next year, and they have Auburn at McHale
Center next month, and then they'll go to Auburn the
following year under Tommy Lloyd. They've done that with Tennessee,
They've done that with Duke, They've done that with Wisconsin.
So it's not like this is nine terrible games at
home or seven terrible games at home and then a
bunch of neutral site games. There is a little bit

(21:17):
of a mix, and you're seeing that, I think from
all of the top teams that you're playing some neutrals,
you're playing some home and homes, and then you're playing
your standard by games.

Speaker 2 (21:27):
Yeah, we'll see what happens. I can specifically tonight, what
do you think is going to happen? Do you think
you're gonna pull it off or UCLA pulled off?

Speaker 15 (21:35):
I mean, I think Arizona will win this game if
they've already played a physical team in Florida, but one
that wanted to move the ball and go a little faster.
McK cronan's style is much more methodical, and I don't
really know what have they been able to prove that
they're a good enough team yet from the opponents they've played.

(21:59):
I think I've heard him say something earlier this week
that reality is going to set in on Friday, referring
to playing a team like Arizona. As long as this
is not like last year where it was a turnover
filled collapse, losing this game is not a bad thing
as long as it's a competitive thing. It's just like
on Wednesday when they go to Yukon. I mean, they

(22:20):
shouldn't win that game based on you know, all the
numbers and all that, but as long as that they
are fairly competitive. It's about using these experiences to build
your team and to have something to work on.

Speaker 6 (22:34):
Right we were talking about that is, you know, Tommy's
not going to be feeling too bad if they lose,
but they you know, they they have that experience of
playing a team, you know, a methodical team or you know,
a strong defensive team or a running gun team. Because
you don't know what you're going to see in the tournament,
so you know, like what's the what's the turnaround look
like for them? I mean they're they're they're playing in

(22:54):
LA then it's it's four or five days to Yukon.
I mean, are they gonna what's your thought on on
that is what's Yukon style of basketball?

Speaker 15 (23:04):
Yukon is a little bit more of a score quickly
type team, but I think they have the ability to
also grind it out if needed. I mean, Danny Hurley
has proven that he can put together good teams by
winning those consecutive national titles, and they're going to be
a perennial power under him. And the you know, playing
in that environment, playing at Yukon, and I think they're

(23:26):
playing this one on campus, They're not playing it in
the off campus arena, so it should be a really,
really tough environment. And that's those are the kind of
things that you need to have because when Arizona gets
into the Big twelve, they're going to go to Kanpas,
they're going to go to Houston, They're going to go
to BYU, They're going to go to tough environments. So
if they've already had a couple of those before they

(23:47):
get there, then those don't feel as tough.

Speaker 6 (23:49):
Yeah, no, question doesn't hurt I don't think it hurts them.
I think it only helps them get ready for.

Speaker 2 (23:53):
Yeah, and that's why you do it right, Yes, yes.

Speaker 15 (23:58):
I mean loud Dolson did that all the time. It
was you know, I want to play as many tough
games as possible, because not that the Pac ten Pac
twelve wasn't tough, but that you you just you fall
into a little bit of a pattern where teams that
you're the same teams you're seeing each year, and it
can get into some complacency. So you want to make
sure you've seen every possible combination of opponent and style

(24:22):
and all that, so that when you do get to
the tournament and it's essentially a random draw, you don't
find yourself against an opponent that you haven't seen and
don't know how to match up again.

Speaker 2 (24:32):
So I'm going to ask you a weird question. So
earlier this week, have you since at all that Tommy's
a little bit more cranky? And I say that because
he's always cranky with Bruce. He's kind of been back
at me, and this week he did a little with you.

Speaker 15 (24:50):
Yeah, I don't know what was up on Tuesday. I
don't know if it was just a matter of like
he didn't want to already be talking about you see
when he had just finished playing an Au, but it
was you know, this was the only opportunity to really
ask about it. I think that he had already made
kind of an alluded to u c l A after

(25:11):
the Utah Tech game where he said mentioned a thorn
in our side coming up, and and I think that
that game last year against Ucile really stuck with him
because of how badly they finished it and it was
the end of the bad run at the beginning, and
then they kind of turned things around. So I don't
know if maybe he's he's like that's just lingering in

(25:31):
his mind and that like he really wants to win
this game more than others or what. But that was
that was a little bit of a of a crankyer
Tommy Lloyd. It could also just be from the fact
that you know, they they won that game at the
beginning of the season against Florida and now the top five,
so now you get into the hole what Nick Saban
refer to it the kind of the rat poison talk

(25:52):
where you know, everyone just wants to talk about how
great you are, and that maybe he's, you know, in
some ways concerned that his team might get a little
full of itself.

Speaker 3 (26:03):
Yeah. I don't know, but he's not talking to his team.
He's talking to us.

Speaker 13 (26:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 15 (26:08):
Yeah, well, and he's talking to fans and and things
like that. And I mean it also was a little
surprising to kind of say, hey, nobody's bought tickets for
this yet, right, so, and especially because like I don't
think that really matted like for the bottom line for Arizona,

(26:29):
how many people show up out there. I don't think
that impacts how much money they make off of it.
I think it might have just been you know, I
don't know if maybe one of the promoters is like, hey,
we need you to say something, and he felt obligated
to do that.

Speaker 2 (26:43):
Right, yeah, no question. Okay, let's switch gears and go
to football in the morning. What do you think tomorrow
in Cincinnati?

Speaker 15 (26:51):
I mean, there's nothing that says they should win this
game based on the opponent and all the things that
Cincinnati has done and is capable of doing. And I
don't think that there should be an expectation for Arizona
to win this game. I think it's more a try
not to have it look like the Iowa State game,
which has really been the only bad game of the year.

(27:13):
Try to get more like the YU and Houston where
you're competitive against good teams and had the opportunities. I
just you know, you never know that now they got
to that six win threshold. As much as they've been
saying that's not the goal, we want more, they do
now have that knowledge that they will have one more

(27:34):
game after this, and so I guess there's a potential
for a letdown, but it's hard to call it a
letdown when you're playing the team that they keep referring
to as the best team that they will effaced the seasons.
So I don't think they'll win, but I don't think
that they're going to get blown out unless that just
their their game plan is terrible and they can't figure

(27:58):
out what to do again, Cincinnati.

Speaker 7 (28:00):
What is your what is the little voice in the
back of your head that didn't say that?

Speaker 5 (28:03):
I think?

Speaker 6 (28:04):
I mean, like, if there is a chance that they win,
what happens. What's the scenario where U of A has
themselves in a position to win what happened to get there?

Speaker 15 (28:14):
Well, first and foremost, they can't fall behind early. When
they fall behind early on the road, that's just a
recipe for disaster. They were down twenty two nothing against
Iowa State and you're like, okay, well this game is over.
The Houston game, they had a good start and then
there was the time if they had the middle and
it really just came down to them getting stopped on

(28:37):
fourth down late in the first half and then giving
up a touchdown, and then Houston gets the ball to
start the second half. So that's a big fourteen point swing.
But they fought themselves back to get to where it
was tied and then lost on a walk off. So
that plus the way they played at Colorado the last
time on the road are good signs to indicate that
you know, they've they've figured some things out. But Sincecinnati

(29:00):
is far better than Colorado, and it's probably better than
Houston as well, so it's just a matter of if
they down two scores in the first quarter, that's very,
very worriedsome but they've shown they can come back. But
you don't want to be down that much that early.

Speaker 2 (29:17):
I asked Michael loved this I think I asked maybe
somebody else earlier this week and how much of a
monkey off the back it was for Brent to get
this win last weekend.

Speaker 15 (29:29):
Yeah, it was a huge one. And to get it
fifth early in the season, in the ninth game, and
really on the first opportunity not have it be a
situation where they're sitting at five wins for a couple
of games and the pressure starts them mount and to
do it in a comeback fashion in a game that
they really didn't play particularly well but they still managed

(29:50):
to find a way to win. All those things point
to the fact that there has been improvement this season
beyond just the record, Like this is a game that
they wouldn't have won last year, the Kansas game, and
there's been a couple of those this year. Or there's
been games that they were close that they wouldn't have
been closed in last year. So the six win number

(30:12):
is the most tangible evidence of improvement. And just to
be able to finally put that out the door and
just focus on these last three I'm sure has taken
a huge weight off them. Now. You don't want to
go six and six and then go into a Bowl
game with the possibility of finishing the losing record, because
then that SATs the momentum while the bowl games are

(30:34):
essentially meaningless. You don't want it to be part of
a losing streak to end the season. That happened with
rich Rod in his final season, and that happened with
Mike Stoops in his final full season, So you don't
want to be taking those kind of streaks into the postseason.
I think they lose this week. I think they beat Baylor,

(30:57):
and then they probably will lose at AFU seven and
five after being four and eight and having to essentially
rebuild the team. I think it's a major success, major
for this program.

Speaker 3 (31:09):
Okay, so do they win or do they win.

Speaker 15 (31:14):
Against Cincinnati?

Speaker 3 (31:15):
Yeah, so.

Speaker 7 (31:17):
Maybe steams out. Do they cover six?

Speaker 15 (31:19):
Now?

Speaker 3 (31:20):
Do they win? I'm not touching it.

Speaker 15 (31:21):
So that's actually six and a half is actually the
largest spread, the biggest underdog they've been this season really
and yeah, all the games, with the exception of the
Oklahoma State game, every spread in Big twelve play has
been under seven points. It's it's been that kind of

(31:43):
thing where I mean, it just shows that the computers
and the osmakers and all that have said that. So
many of Arizona's games have been toss ups, and of
those five previous in conference play and six if you
count Kansas State, they've won three and they've lost three,
so which is kind of what you would expect.

Speaker 2 (32:00):
And quickly, Okay, thanks Brian, stay go take a nap.

See, I don't remember the.

Yeah we're not here to got no trouble to do

Speaker 6 (37:12):

Speaker 3 (37:20):
Yeah, okay, it makes sense. Yeah makes sense.

Speaker 2 (37:23):
Okay, And who do you want to call five two
O four four forty talk about tomorrow's big game, Tonight's
big game. I don't call him big Kings because it's
December or November, even December.

Speaker 4 (37:35):
You know, Yeah, it's fair for basketball. I think right
now like it counts as a big game for football.

Speaker 3 (37:38):
Three weeks left, you guys, we I know.

Speaker 2 (37:40):
Okay, I'm just some slub on the radio, former sports
rad some slob with a pencil. You do what you do, right.
I don't want to call you a slub because you're important.

Speaker 5 (37:48):
Way this is, this is a safe space.

Speaker 2 (37:50):
We can all be slight and raise a former athlete,
but we're all super slow at the end.

Speaker 3 (37:55):
You're in shape, slub.

Speaker 2 (37:57):
We're all just dudes talking on the mic, and people
who are just dudes listening to us. Okay, So, do
you really think that tonight's game we'll set Arizona up
in March in terms of quality of play, the style
of play or whatever. Do you think that win last
week against Florida really set them up for a win
in March? And I say this because I'm not a doctor,

(38:20):
but I play one on TV, and I've seen these
operations before in the past. Many times they've won a
lot of these games, and you know what it meant
in March, not a damn thing, because it's how you
play that day against the team you play against.

Speaker 3 (38:37):
If does that make sense, If.

Speaker 6 (38:38):
Florida winds up being ranked in the top five and
we beat them, and you say that winds up being
ranked in the top ten or twelve, we beat them,
let's say so it does help us in March because
we might have a one or two seed. So it
might help you in those first initial games. Doesn't help
you win, doesn't help you. You know, oh we learned
this on defense, but it might help you have a
better seed.

Speaker 2 (38:56):
Okay, you're my apprentice doctor. You know you're not a surgeon.
But I'm not working at the hospital. Okay, yeah, yeah,
that's what I'm saying. So Arizona, I think it has
been mentioned as in the last four years in Tommy
Sime two point two is their seed average? Two point two.
I think only Houston and maybe another team has been

(39:18):
higher seeded uh in the last four years. Okay for Arizona,
I'm not trying to pooh pooh. I'm just giving your facts.

Speaker 3 (39:25):
They finished in the sweet sixteen I think twice first
round loss, and I think that's it.

Speaker 5 (39:33):
Right, three maybe three sweets sweets I was, I was
in here for three.

Speaker 14 (39:36):
Three.

Speaker 2 (39:37):
He lost in the sweet sixteen to Houston, got beat
by Princeton's got by Clemson in the sweet sixteen, and
the unless and then Duke. So so just to your
point of the seeds, you want to be a one
or a two, hoping that that benefits you.

Speaker 3 (39:53):
It hasn't to this point. Does that make sense?

Speaker 15 (39:56):
So?

Speaker 2 (39:56):
But my mostly my point is this early games lot
Lout owned in November, so did I guess, you know
a lot of other teams because it really wins in November, right,
But then you come to when it matters. You know,
it's not who you date, it's who you marry. And
guess when March happens, it's the wedding time.

Speaker 5 (40:12):
Right right right, you know.

Speaker 6 (40:14):
But but lude you know, it was a different era
he had, you know, he had third and fourth year
players and he would take them on and barnstorm them,
and you know, and they'd go across the country, they
play anybody, and.

Speaker 3 (40:23):
They too had their issues.

Speaker 15 (40:25):
You know.

Speaker 2 (40:25):
Come on, if if there was one criticism of Lout
when he before he won the title, is they lost
in the first round or way ahead of time. In fact,
I continue to hear people now that he's passed and
talk to me. You know that I wrote this book
that that that he should have won more titles. I'm thinking, what,
you know, how difficult it is. Guess there was Mike

(40:46):
Krzewski coaching cal part there's other dudes trying to win
the title too. Now that we got a we got
a phone call. Hope he's shop to fight with me first? Really, Hello,
you're on the airline of the ball. Who's yes, Niko,
give me some week.

Speaker 7 (41:01):
Man, come on, help us out, buddy.

Speaker 21 (41:03):
Yeah, man, everything saying is right, hold the crop?

Speaker 3 (41:07):
Yeah, which part do you agree with? Most?

Speaker 21 (41:11):
It's even if they win or lose, this isn't going
to help them later down the road.

Speaker 2 (41:15):
You're you're exactly right, You're exactly They'll know that they
have to get better at this type of game.

Speaker 3 (41:21):
But okay, you win. How many times have you raced
and you said I'm going to be better because.

Speaker 7 (41:26):
You want to Do you want to win this week
or do you want to win the championship at the
end of the season.

Speaker 3 (41:30):
And today is not going to mean now or then?
But thank you Nico anything else.

Speaker 21 (41:35):
Hey, man, I wish you were talking more football.

Speaker 3 (41:38):
Man again, you tell me, you tell me what's going
to happen tomorrow.

Speaker 21 (41:45):
The Cats win back three. Wow, I'm not going to
say which.

Speaker 22 (41:49):
Cats out.

Speaker 5 (41:55):
Or bear.

Speaker 2 (41:55):
It should be the one thing that everyone says, Nico
is they cannot get down early, knock it.

Speaker 21 (42:01):
Down, and they had to just be competitive. That's all
I'm asking for.

Speaker 3 (42:04):
So yeah, okay, thanks.

Speaker 21 (42:06):
But you're right about basketball, Steve.

Speaker 2 (42:08):
Yeah, you know, thank you, thank you. I've seen it
too many times. I've just seen it too many times.
And I'm sure for wrestling you may have learned some
lessons in these things.

Speaker 15 (42:17):
M M two.

Speaker 2 (42:19):
Three years ago, everybody was learning lessons from basketball.

Speaker 3 (42:22):
How many lessons do you need to learn to get better?

Speaker 22 (42:24):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (42:25):
I think what it is like also is like, and
we say this around March every time, Right, there's only
one championship. There's three hundred and something teams, there's only
one championship. So I think another thing that it also
helps with is the Big twelve, right, because it's like,
because you're gonna have those weeks where it's two games
a week, right, and you're gonna have you canna have
a b YU Houston, you know, just one of those

(42:48):
like top A teams from the Big twelve and then
you're gonna go on the road and play like Colorado
or something like that. So that's why I kind of
like the like the way the schedules set up because
it's like you're going because like that's what that's what
conference play is, right, It's it's a rollercoaster. You know,
you're gonna you're gonna play those top Teams're gonna play
those bodies the same week. So I think that's what
it helps with more when it comes to March. Yeah,

(43:08):
I don't know what what what you're really gonna learn
in November for March, because it's like by that time
you can remember it, but you're not gonna remember the
same feeling.

Speaker 2 (43:18):
Either, and you're playing against a different team exactly, and
the all for different things. What this did, and I
said this two years ago when they beat Duke, the
worst thing that happened to Arizona, given my history of whatever,
is that they beat Duke on the road and gave
them this false hope of not the team, but the
people who follow the team, this false hope of God,

(43:38):
we're gonna do it.

Speaker 3 (43:39):
Guess what? Guess what last week did the same same thing.

Speaker 7 (43:43):
Well that you're you're describing Tucson for like the last
forty five years.

Speaker 3 (43:47):
I've been around for almost that time, and I've seen it.

Speaker 7 (43:51):
You're just got sing my emotions every for every season.

Speaker 2 (43:54):
How many times do you have to get hit in
the head to know that it's not sometimes a good feel?

Speaker 7 (43:58):
Just one more season, get hit in the head.

Speaker 15 (44:01):
This is the year.

Speaker 3 (44:01):
I don't see you at tnc tilm. I have this concussion.
It's on the right side of my head.

Speaker 5 (44:08):
Every year, somebody hits you in the head. Steve, You're
here every year.

Speaker 2 (44:11):
So I think it's just being realistic and beating teams. Hey,
it beats the alternative than losing. Right, everybody has that
feel good feeling. But today and yesterday and last week,
enjoy the moment and let's move on to the next
game and see what happens, because it doesn't work that
way in November December.

Speaker 5 (44:30):
Yeah, and not in this not in his hair, not anymore.

Speaker 2 (44:32):
And for the other reason, if they lose, lose, loose,
and then you wonder that this team sucks, well, they
did pretty well last year when they were lose lose lose,
so it works both ways.

Speaker 15 (44:42):
Well.

Speaker 4 (44:42):
I mean, there's always that adage right where it's like
you learn more from a loss than a win, and
it's not. I don't even think like, obviously you do
learn a lot because you're learning your deficiencies, right, but
it's like you like having that mentality of it. It's like, Okay,
I'm feeling disrespected right, like I like people, people are
counting me out. Game hasn't even been played yet, stuff

(45:02):
like that. I think that's that's it's good to be
hungry when it comes and.

Speaker 2 (45:06):
That right there, that statement might as well put be
put on the locker room of Arizona. They've when they're
disrespected and I wrote this in the column last week.
When they're disrespected and no one thinks that they're gonna win,
I guess what happens. They always pulled through, or most
of the time pulls through. It's the it's the Clemsons
that they have to oh, we got this, we got this,
Santa Claia, we got this. You say we got this,

(45:28):
and guess what, you don't got this. And I'm sure
the games in November during those seasons.

Speaker 7 (45:35):
Didn't mean the damn thing not at that point that
when they lose.

Speaker 3 (45:38):
And exactly you understand what I'm saying.

Speaker 5 (45:41):
I do, I do, and and you know and it
just this.

Speaker 7 (45:45):
This city is a roller coaster of emotion.

Speaker 15 (45:48):
Sure.

Speaker 2 (45:48):
I mean, you know, any college town that has a
pretty good team feels the same way.

Speaker 3 (45:52):
We've got a call. Although you're on the air and
nine the ball, Hey, this is it, Vick.

Speaker 22 (45:58):
Speak to us, you guys of the biggest doom and
gloom guys I've ever seen in my life.

Speaker 3 (46:03):
Wait, Jay's not here, but you're right, it's gonna tomorrow.
You can you can call me names, but you know
I'm right.

Speaker 22 (46:13):
No, one day I'm gonna walk out with a pretty girl.

Speaker 15 (46:17):
One days, guy, Come on, something dream happened.

Speaker 2 (46:25):
I know this song is not comparighted to someth singing
beautiful dreamer, you happen to see.

Speaker 22 (46:34):
Down you one day. One day I'm gonna get the
prettiest girl in the bar, and you guys are gonna
be waving at me.

Speaker 3 (46:39):
Vic Vick, let me tell you it better be in March.

Speaker 22 (46:42):
Not Tommy's gonna Tommy's gonna walk off with that trophy
one day. No, No, not happened on the same day.

Speaker 4 (46:48):
I don't.

Speaker 2 (46:48):
I don't, That's not what I'm saying. But better be
in March when you walk away with that beautiful girl.

Speaker 22 (46:55):
Okay, Ray tell um, at least Ray pick up for me.

Speaker 7 (46:58):
Man, Damn, I learned.

Speaker 4 (47:01):
I have learned in my quick time here. But hey, hey, Vic,
you feel me? Me and you hit Little Mexico on
a Friday night. We're walking, we're both walking.

Speaker 22 (47:09):
We're there, Bro, We're there.

Speaker 3 (47:10):
Who's the wing man here?

Speaker 7 (47:12):
I'm the man man, Ray, He's got skills, Vic.

Speaker 5 (47:17):
He's going to help you out. He has skills.

Speaker 22 (47:20):
Vic. Where we're and we're gonna come away with a
wind tonight for sure.

Speaker 3 (47:24):
Tomorrow What about tomorrow?

Speaker 22 (47:28):
Man, Yeah, Noah's got to throw and the guy gotta catch.

Speaker 7 (47:33):
See Vic, this is quality, quality insight right here.

Speaker 5 (47:36):
Vic knows what it's all about.

Speaker 3 (47:40):
Thanks for misten, Vic. We'll talk to you soon about but.

Speaker 22 (47:43):
I will have that breakfast burrito waiting, so I'm ready.

Speaker 3 (47:45):
Yes, okay, thanks man, Okay, take care guys, bat show,
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (47:50):
Hey dude, VIC coming away with the well you know
there are there have been number ones being in sixteen
sixteen has been number one.

Speaker 7 (48:00):
That's happened one time.

Speaker 3 (48:02):
Yeah, and there's other losses the two a couple of times.

Speaker 7 (48:07):
They have to be in the top you know three teams,
and there were number twos that I've lost.

Speaker 2 (48:12):
Nine Yeah, well there has Syracuse there was on a
couple of times. I'm not trying to poo poo. I'm
just trying to be this is what I've done. If
I had not done this for a living for a
long time, I wouldn't even say because i wouldn't think
of it.

Speaker 3 (48:23):
But I've seen it. I've written those stories. You know,
I know I feel it to you. You've lived, You're
a fan.

Speaker 7 (48:30):
I know I've read yourself for years, and you just
you know, it's it's just you.

Speaker 5 (48:34):
You go into this.

Speaker 6 (48:35):
You've been burned too many times, right, and you're just like,
you know, I'm not going to get excited about this six,
six win team yet. I'm not gonna do it because
if I start to get excited, then I'm going to
start to buy in, and then I'm going to do
the things and I'm going to be all excited. I'm
going to go buy an Arizona shirt and they're going
to lose the last three games.

Speaker 1 (48:50):
Right.

Speaker 2 (48:50):
Well, let me say this when I first covered the
team in ninety one. When I first started, they had
just lost to East Tennessee State. Okay, so you know
that was my first experience of losing the first round
with them covering the team.

Speaker 3 (49:00):
Pretty good team. So the next year they do really well,
seventeen to one in the back ten. They almost have
a have a chance to go undefeated in eighteen and
oh blah blah blah, they're on this great streak. They
go and loose to Santa Clara.

Speaker 2 (49:11):
One of my first questions and this is me being
naive in my mid twenties whatever it was, mid twenties,
late twenties. We had a press conference kind of get
together after the game the next day, and I went
to Loot almost apologetically.

Speaker 3 (49:25):
This is how naive I was at the time.

Speaker 2 (49:27):
Says, do you think almost like sorry that I'm asking
this question, that this is the stuff that we will
have to deal with with you moving forward, back to back.
I even probably said it stupidly as a kid, you know,
trying to ask the question. And he says, well, Steve,
you know, he was actually feeling sorry for me for
asking the question because I asked it like almost apologizing
sorry for rights I said, do you think this is

(49:48):
what we're gonna have to do with back to back
that we're here for this? And he was like, you know,
we'll get through this, blah blah blah. And it was like,
you know almost, I was like, why did I ask
the question that way?

Speaker 3 (49:58):
But it was true.

Speaker 2 (49:59):
You have these great seasons and then you lose back
to back first rounds. Guess what, they were pretty damn good.
So all those experiences they had leading up, you know
what they meant not a damn thing.

Speaker 5 (50:12):
Yeah, yeah, I mean sometimes yeah, it's just how it goes.
You know, you just don't wake up. You just don't
wake up that day.

Speaker 3 (50:18):
It gives. It's how you play that day, I know.

Speaker 6 (50:21):
And that's sadly that's what this you know, the basketball
college basketball is now is?

Speaker 7 (50:26):
Is the is the tournament now?

Speaker 11 (50:29):
Fair?

Speaker 2 (50:30):
It is?

Speaker 7 (50:31):
You know, I mean, it's it's sad, but it is.
That's just the way that it is.

Speaker 6 (50:34):
Everybody plays to the tournament and that's that's what everybody remembers.

Speaker 2 (50:37):
And everybody has the same shot, right, everybody has this shakesty.

Speaker 7 (50:41):
Four teams or whatever it is, sixty eight teams now, right,
So it's exciting stuff.

Speaker 5 (50:46):
Though.

Speaker 2 (50:46):
Yeah, but even if you're got momentum or no momentum
or run or run, good luck with that. I got
to win six games. That's got to win six games. Now,
if you win like tonight, if they lose like like
Nico said, okay, they lose.

Speaker 6 (51:00):
Yeah, I don't. I don't think that teams are the
cities as invested. I just remember the city being crushed.
I think it's still I think that's still still early.

Speaker 5 (51:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (51:11):
And then you have a football I know you kind
of did this with us maybe a month ago when Jason,
don't do this, don't do this about losing in his
basketball season.

Speaker 5 (51:18):
Oh yeah, it has.

Speaker 2 (51:20):
It has some football field still, right, it's some some
lingered in football fielders happy. Okay, we're still in the
season bowl game, and it's still too early in the
basketball season to let go.

Speaker 6 (51:31):
Of the square October November overlay of both sports and
the sense of the football team's you know, pretty good,
you know, or at least medium.

Speaker 2 (51:37):
Good, unlike what you've been used to the last few years. Sure,
you know, excluding the fishes last year. So but enjoy
the moment. I mean it's been good, right, Vic.

Speaker 7 (51:48):
We're gonna enjoy the moment. We're not going to be
dooming gloom over here.

Speaker 2 (51:51):
And Vic, if you do go home with a pretty
girl tonight, don't think your brand, Pitt. You might have
just won a first round gamey.

Speaker 3 (52:00):
In you to take with you.

Speaker 23 (52:02):
You're saying Vic is a sixteen sixteen. We got a big, big,
a little more credit than that fourteen. Yeah, he played
his way in. He won his conference tournament.

Speaker 5 (52:17):
Oh man, what a friday you get eighteen hours?

Speaker 3 (52:21):
Man, I think you guys go together, you Vick, Yeah,
help him out. He can help you.

Speaker 5 (52:26):
Yeah, I think I think it work. You know, I
might have to get a hold of him.

Speaker 2 (52:32):
Okay, we gotta go. All right, we finish strong. That's
thanks for the call, Thanks big, anybody else call it
was it? Okay, Thanks everybody will see you on Monday,
talk about

Speaker 3 (52:42):
These Thanks for having me, Yeah, thank you to appreciate it.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
