Speaker 1 (00:00):

on the Ball with Steve Rivera on Fox Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Hey, welcome back to I on the Ball here on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera, your Dave Silver.
Now we have one with breaking news. But let me
for say, if you want to call him, you can
call him during this segment as well.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Thanks.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
This is I on the Ball, breaking news on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
Happy Wednesday almost made the Monday mistake. Happy Wednesday, everyone
out there, you're truly le me hit the Linda. We're
gonna start off with Arizona Athletics volleyball got the win
last Friday Halloween win three to zero against the ranked
He's you team, So they're looking to get back on
the right track. They'll plays a night against b YU.
I would assume the Hey, momentum confidence, confident confidence, See
(00:52):
the difference confidence. I'm very strict about momentum now, and
when I hear it, I laugh because I do. I
do believe that momentum does not exist anymore.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
I'm doing it one kid at a time. Let's get
those matches are fun.
Speaker 5 (01:05):
And we went to a match a month ago or
so I'm one of those nights where they had the
kids on the court afterwards and deal the clinic with
the little ones. It was really fun. So definitely recommend
going out and watching grassroots stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Yeah, get those kids learning now. Yeah, it's perfect place
to see it.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Twelve and nine on the season, they'll look to beat
BYU and then Texas to get some revenge against Texas
Tech on Friday. Of course, Arizona Me's basketball had a
good weekend in Vegas as they beat the number three team,
defending national champion Florida Gators ninety three to eighty seven
Coopete with thirty points seven rebounds.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Here's another thing, and maybe we'll get a call at
some point. Defending national champions. Yes they are, and that's
what you call them. But every team is different every season.
This is not that team, right, you know the kid
who was very good last year for them, Clayton. Guess
what he hits? So she takes those shots in the corner,
Yeah he makes them. Yeah, this is a much different
game with that. So it's for yes, defending not but
(02:02):
that wasn't the team to join in college sports.
Speaker 5 (02:04):
You can say that really almost anywhere. Maybe maybe football.
I don't know, but definitely basketball. Is this that much
this year? They're they're good, They're good, They're good.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
They'll play Utah Tech on Friday, seven o'clock on T
and T. If you won't be going to McHale. Okay,
you had Arizona football going to Colorado and putting a
beating on the Buffalo's What were you, by the way,
seen you were supposed to meet us and you didn't
show up. I was with the homecoming friends. Oh okay,
here for the week, the week, here for the week.
(02:38):
They came in early, so if they make the time,
I gotta make the time.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Look at you.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
But fifty two to seventeen, no fafido with a pretty
good game.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Pretty good?
Speaker 4 (02:50):
Yeah, eleven for nineteen, two hundred and thirteen, four touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Everybody had a good game.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
He's now three touchdowns away from breaking the all time
career passing touchdown record.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
That's pretty amazing.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
Arizona could did what they could not afford to do.
They won right because Brendan would have been cooked.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
And they did exactly what they were supposed to do
and they blew out a bad Colorado team.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
Yeah, it gives people not It gives you a chance
to not say anything all week really about him, very
you know, just very homecoming.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Was excited about Kansas. Let's yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
A spectacular world series came to an end last Saturday,
five to four. The Dodgers repeat champions, first time in
twenty five years.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Yes, and first national champions since Cincinnati did it seventy
five seventy six at the.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Back, back to back, Yeah game, did you watch it? Yeah?
I watched it. Yeah, I had.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
I had some money on Toronto from the beginning and
got him at good price. They lost it in game
six to me. They lost in game six, but they
had it won in game seven too.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah. Uh.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
You know that one home run by the second basement
was it ross?
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Yeah, you know, kind of like propelled them to win the.
Speaker 5 (04:06):
Shocker soccer homer of the series. But they're just the
way they came back. You believe in destiny. I don't know,
why do you believe?
Speaker 3 (04:14):
I believe in karma. Karma?
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Okay, I believe in destiny, and for some reason, the
Dodgers were destined to win this whole.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Thing for whatever.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Even July they had them out right because they're pitching
sucked well, he went to the starters instead of the
bullpit and found a way.
Speaker 5 (04:29):
Yeah, I mean basically, you know, you mentioned to go
back to back, but it was like two different strategies
as far as.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Pitching games from year to year.
Speaker 6 (04:35):
Very much.
Speaker 5 (04:36):
Their relievers were just horrendous really through most of the summer.
They kind of switched things up and put one of
their starters as their closer. It's like the biggest difference
in the world. So worked out pretty well for Dave Roberts.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
Looking at the NBA, got some couple of a couple
of games tonight on ESPN, Timberolves taking on the Knicks,
Spurs playing the Lakers. Looking at the standings, the Chicago
Bulls kind of a surprise team in the East on
top of that conference, and the Thunder of course eight
and oh they're showing their championship mentality.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Everybody good.
Speaker 5 (05:07):
They're so good old six and one though, that's pretty wild. Yeah,
who's the coach now, it's still what's the name? I
believe it's Billy Billy Yeah, okay, see you just mentioned
eight now and then Spurs are having a good start
too well.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
His guys, Spur Wimby. Yeah, yep, you gotta beat by
the Suns.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
The Sons the surprise for surprise to me, because it's
not like the Spurs sat anyone out. The Suns were
the better team that night. Looking at some other college
basketball finishes, Houston beating down on Lee High seventy five
to fifty seven. You can't taking care of business against
New Haven. AJD de Bantsa having a good game against Villanova,
(05:44):
you see, like kind of struggled with Eastern Washing Washington,
kind of give them a run for their money.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
Was the scoring there some of it?
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Eighty to seventy four. Okay, let's let's take this call
real quick. Hello, you're on the aar and nine on
the ball.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Who's this?
Speaker 6 (05:57):
It's Rick Berdie.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
How you doing good? Rick? What's up? Well?
Speaker 7 (06:00):
Welcome back.
Speaker 8 (06:02):
First of all, this young man Koa.
Speaker 7 (06:04):
He played with a lot of maturity. I was just
really impressed. And you look at but he's been playing
like this for a long time. You know, it's not
his first first rodeo. I did watch, I did I
taped the BYU Villanova game and two things. The young
man the big star for BYU. He reminded me of
(06:28):
a very young Sean kemp All right when you when
when I think about it, But I was even more
impressed with Villanova. They were undersized and they played. Yeah,
they lost the game, but they played very well as
a team and they were very synchronized. They missed some
(06:50):
open shots, but overall I thought Villanova they impressed me.
And I'm thinking, Okay, if this is the Big East, uh,
we're in for some great basketball this year. The world
it's the best World Series I've ever seen. And get
(07:13):
my hat to the Dodgers, who the individuals are great. Uh,
but you know the coach Dave Roberts, what a job
he did and keeping them ploys, keeping them focused, keeping
them centered, not getting two up to down. He is
one hell of a coach. And I think Major League
(07:36):
Baseball was the big winners this year.
Speaker 6 (07:38):
Overall, that's true.
Speaker 7 (07:40):
Next year it's couldn't even be better.
Speaker 8 (07:43):
So thank you for your time.
Speaker 9 (07:45):
Guy.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
All Right, Rick, thanks for calling. It's good. There's a
lot of young talent.
Speaker 5 (07:48):
There's I mean, there's maybe the one of the greatest
players of all time already playing now with Otani. The
Dodgers being in that market, international, internationally famous too. You know,
there's just a lot to leave force and baseball. That
was really a good season. I think their TV ratings
were you know, skyrocketed. People watched the World Series and
record numbers. So you know, let's see. I know you're
not a huge fan, but you know, it's just it's
(08:09):
just hard to follow. It's a long season. And that's
why I'm not that much of a fan. And it's
just a long season.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
NBA.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
It's the long seasons. Yeah, they got to they got
to pay the guys. That's why they have long seasons.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Yeah, but you know, I remember, I mean since Barry Bonds.
Speaker 5 (08:24):
This is the first time I think I've ever like
literally will stop if he's been Tony comes up, I
want to watch and kind of that's the way Bonds was,
you know, twenty years ago.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
For me at least, it's already been almost how many
years now since the duel was so suid?
Speaker 3 (08:36):
That was nineteen ninety eight, really that long.
Speaker 5 (08:39):
But then Bonds came a little later because he was
jealous of those guys. Yeah, you know, so he said
the record, I think what in a one or somewhere,
the dig.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
The long ball was ninety eight that year. God, God,
that seems like ten years, fifteen years ago.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
That was crazy, but you know, the game is in
a in a good, good spot. I think, you know,
h let's just see how they can carry over the next.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
Year continuous some with the college basketball scores. Some teams
that Arizona will see this year. Alabama, I always stay in Kansas,
blew out their opponents, but Auburn struggling at home against
Bethune Cookman had to go to overtime to win that one.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Well, you saw Boise State lost to some team that
was pretty you know, not just real maybe a Hawaii
team I can't remember, but good.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
With that Houston win though, Calvin Sampson has now now
at eight one hundred career wins.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Wow, and that's kind of like the Jay Doson line
or the min that's the line that they want to
get to eight hundred wins.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
Hall of Fame. Yeah yeah, and he's of course destined
for that. Yeah, but it's that's quite a he's been
around when you think about it. Yeah, when did he start.
We first saw him.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
Really Washington State, right, yeah, he was in some early nineties,
right oh yeah, yeah, late nineties, late early nineties.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
Yeah, Jay Billis came out with his top sixty eight
teams for this season. And this reminds you, this is
post like last night's games, right, the most recent games.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Does he say that or did he just came out today?
It came out today because he would have had a
chance to change it, Eddie if it was before.
Speaker 6 (10:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
Yeah, So Arizona came in at number seventeen either with their.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
Win over Florida. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
The one thing that we'll definitely see is Arizona make
it in the top ten next week or whatever. Then
eventually yeah, yeah, not that it matters because like Dave,
we've seen this before. I saw it a number of
years when I covered the team directly, right ninety four.
Then one time they weren't even ranked, they go to
the n whin the NIT they're in the top five.
(10:39):
There's a few times when they're you know, ranked low,
they win and they're in the top five, and then
it kind of has to settle down, right and you
hope it.
Speaker 5 (10:47):
Settles down and is you know, on an upswing by
the time they hit February. Yeah, so where you know,
if you lose one game, you're not going to get
dropped to the top below sixteen, where I mean you
want to be in the top sixteen basically just to
be a top top force, so you just gotta be careful.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
While most eyes were on Vegas, there was still a
game in the Big d Dallas. The Cowboys lost to
the Cardinals twenty seven to seventeen. Jacoby Brissett had a
nice game, going twenty one for thirty one, two hundred
and sixty one yards and two touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
I'm shocked. I was shocked.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
I was shocked. I couldn't believe it. Actually, I'm sarcastic shocked. Yeah,
Dallas isn't any good. That was at home too, right, Yep,
they're not good.
Speaker 5 (11:27):
Yeah, because again, that's the same night as the Ears
in a basketball game, right, So we kind of had
that and then it did and then flipped over the football.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
What the heck.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
Cardinals might have found their starting quarterback for the rest
of the year though, because Kyler Murray is being put
on IR with the foot injury, so with the performances
of Jacoby Brissett, they might have their quarterback. Trade deadline
happened over the weekend. The big news was that Sauce
Gardner from the Jets was traded to the Indianapolis Colts.
So the Colts just keep getting better. Yeah, and they
(11:56):
lost this and they lost to the NFL Connection Tomorrow
Night Raiders and Broncos in Mile High six fifteen on
Prime Video.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
They're playing on Tuesdays now, I'm choking. Still Monday, Still Monday,
Tuesday night football. Denver is having a nice little season.
They are, I think, to your point, when do you
think they're going to win the Super Bowl next?
Speaker 10 (12:18):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (12:19):
Realistic for Denver?
Speaker 4 (12:20):
Yeah, I really don't know. I don't think the next
It's shown myself to be this year. I don't think
they'll win it.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
Right right, But in the next three years they'll be
playing in it. They're they're good. Nicks is fantastic, and
then heck the coach, he's a good coach.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
Yeah. So okay, let's see what happens to.
Speaker 5 (12:40):
I was going to say as far as them getting
into the playoffs and where they're going to be seated,
like when they get home field, you know the weather's
going to be you know what in Denver in January? Yeah,
you know, it could be crazy. So if they have
home home games there.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
So let me tell you.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
That's what I did, and I don't have to tell you,
but I will so I've been successful in picking the
winner the last few years. So I bet Baltimore at
the beginning of the year. So I saw that pig.
But they got their quarterback back and they're still pretty good. Yeah,
but they got to climb through it. So we'll see
what happens with them. So I bet him again just
to double down on stupid, stupid beat because if you're
(13:14):
good back, then that lost a Buffalo member in the
first game when they had it won and then they
lost it. They're still the same team and they got
their quarterback back, so we'll see.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
And I think the guy who sold me the ticket,
I was saying, did you know they're still picked to
win the division? And I'm thinking they are. Okay, that's
even better.
Speaker 5 (13:33):
Division is interesting because Pittsburgh, I mean, I hate to
say it. Aaron Rodgers is doing pretty well. Yeah, he's
doing well. He's had a nice little rejuvenation. This is
this fall.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
So he had some college football scores from this weekend.
Florida gave Georgia a run for their money, but Georgia
came out on top twenty four to twenty and she
stayed upset. Once undefeated Georgia Tech forty eight to thirty six.
Bandy went to Austin and lost for the second time
this year at thirty four to thirty one. That was
a really good game. I got to watch SMU upset
(14:01):
number ten Miami twenty six twenty. I don't think it
was an upset. I'm not sure Miami was that good
and SMU is a talented enough team to win.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
They gave that game away. It was horrible.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
Uh Utah put the beating on Cincinnati, Yeah, forty five
to fourteen. And then how about rich Rodriguez going to Houston. Yeah,
forty five thirty five. They upset number twenty two Houston. Right,
good for rich trod It was coming up to l
s U Alabama.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
That's always a good game. He knows what else she
was going to be likes and say, well coaches.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
We talked about this last week that Randy Rotten already
President Robbins was up for the job and he didn't
not get it, which the.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
Job of the president's job. Did not get it.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Just to just to update that, let's go, we gotta
go fifty more, No, okay, let's go.

Steve Rivera He's got his eye on the ball on
Tucson Sports stationed Fox Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
Hey, welcome back to Why on the Ball here on
Fox Sports fourteen. Cookie, I'm Steve Rivera, your Dave Silver.
We've got one at the controls now on the phone.
We have solid booking from pH NX in Phoenix. How
you doing, sel Hey, what's going on with Steve? How you
guys doing good? To hear your voice. You got back
safely from your trip to Vegas? What what? What impressed
(20:08):
you the most. You know, we sat next to each
other and we were jibber jabbering. But what impressed you
the most?
Speaker 16 (20:14):
Man?
Speaker 6 (20:15):
You know, I could go with Cole Pete, which that
was a surprise in terms of just how easy it was.
I could go with Jade Bradley. I can go with
the easy ones. But I think the thing that I'm
going to go with is Karchenkoff. You know, I just
I just really thought for as poised as big a
moment it was, he was so poised and looked like
(20:37):
the moment wasn't bigger than then he was ready for.
Obviously he's played in big games before, and he just
looked he looked like a veteran, like he looked as
as veteran as you could ever hope a freshman to look.
And I got a lot of high hopes for him
moving forward.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
For sure. It's interesting.
Speaker 5 (20:57):
You know, we've been using the word poised all day
long talking about the team, and again these were also
talking about what eighteen nineteen.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
Year old kids. Where do you think that's coming from?
Speaker 5 (21:06):
I mean, I know Kochikov has been playing professionally, I
guess in Europe, but where are they getting this poise
at such a young age.
Speaker 8 (21:11):
In your opinion, well, I think it's a variety of things.
Speaker 6 (21:15):
I mean, if you look at co Op Pete, it's
not just you know, what he's accomplished at the high
school level, but what he's accomplished at the AAU level,
the international level, you know, with the Olympic gold or
the gold medals, you know, he he he also just
feels like nothing's ever too big for him. Brayden Burry,
same thing. State champion in California has had a lot
(21:37):
of success. Like, these guys are not just high caliber players,
they're high caliber champions.
Speaker 8 (21:44):
And I think that's a.
Speaker 6 (21:44):
Major distinction between what they've done at the previous level
versus other you know All Americans or McDonald's, you know,
caliber type players.
Speaker 8 (21:54):
Not all of them are state champions because.
Speaker 6 (21:55):
Sometimes they you know, like in the state of California,
you might run into another All American and you might
not win a state championship, you know, and that comes
with a little bit of added pressure, knowing that you
haven't gotten that that top level done well. These guys
have all done that. They've all gone to the top
of their their respective divisions or levels and they've won championships.
And I think when you mix that in with Toby
(22:17):
Iwaka and and Jaden Bradley and Krevas, three guys that
are relatively mild mannered, they are not demonstrative, they are
not show boats, they don't try to get in people's faces.
They're not me guys. I think it just is a
nice blend of of selfless attitudes and it just creates
(22:37):
a lot of composure in itself. And Tommy's let's be real,
like would this be the case? And this is not
a knock on Sean Miller, but Sean Miller is a
very vocal guy on the sideline, very demonstrative. Tommy picks
and chooses his spots, and even when things are kind
of chaotic, he'll sit there and say like, hey, we're
good guys, just relax.
Speaker 8 (22:56):
Everything's gonna be fine.
Speaker 6 (22:57):
And I think that repetitive nature of his also just
makes it easier to stay composed in moments when you're
down by twelve against the defending national champs.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
Yeah, no, I totally agree with you. Let me let
me go at my impressive And I'm just thinking about
this now. Arizona won this game without Bury's playing well,
without Creebus playing well and without a waka who felled out.
Speaker 6 (23:20):
Yeah, very impressive, very impressive. From top to bottom. You
have three guys that really contributed at a high level in
terms of points. Everybody else kind of sprinkled in, even
even Delhi didn't really contribute much on the offensive end.
So if we're talking offensively, yeah, by a mile. They
they they they're gonna get much much better defensively. I
(23:40):
thought that they cleaned things up enough to get the
win and I still think that there is a lot
of meat on the bone on both ends of the
court for them to improve. Defensively.
Speaker 8 (23:50):
They you know, freshmen make freshman.
Speaker 6 (23:52):
Mistakes, and that happened several times, especially the guards, and
they're going to improve, especially on the on the pick
and rolls, and when they see teams that want to
play a little bit of a matchup zone or a
zone defense, because I do I do anticipate a lot
a lot of teams are probably going to try to
pack it in a little bit more to force Arizona
to beat them from the outside, which is an easy,
(24:14):
year said than done thing to do because you have
elite big men that can dominate no matter how many
guys you want to put in the paint. Uh, but
cod did turn the ball over on one of the
few times I didn't get double teamed, So you wonder
how many times is that going to happen for this
point forward. I just think that this this team's going
to be ready to handle it no matter what. And
I think they're going to surprise a lot of people,
(24:35):
especially from the perimeter when they're given those opportunities. Certainly
Jayden Bradley will I think Jaydan Bradley's gonna be markedly
improved from three h than a season ago when you
shot about thirty two percent from three.
Speaker 8 (24:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (24:46):
That was my next question was who's gonna who's gonna
make those three point shots for this team?
Speaker 3 (24:50):
They took what five the other day or three?
Speaker 8 (24:52):
Yes, six? Six?
Speaker 6 (24:54):
Yeah, Well, I mean Delhi, Delhi, and then Jayde and
Bradley obviously, and then I think you're gonna see you know,
Brandon Burry's he's going to be able to score from
the outside as well. Karshenko obviously showed that he could
hit the perimeter shot. So you got four guys right
there by themselves that king just provide enough of a
(25:14):
threat from the perimeter to beat you. They're not going
to be a heavy three point team. They don't have
to be. They have a bunch of guys that are
phenomenal mid range players and down low in the post.
So you want to go to your strengths and then
you know, accentuate them with the perceived weaknesses, which I
think will not be as draftic a weakness as people
(25:35):
might think.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
We were sitting next to each other and at at
one point, maybe in the first half, they were down twelve,
but then we later kind of got into the game
and we'll watching it.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
They got physical.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
That's rare. I rarely say that with an Arizona team.
And we looked at each other. They were they were
going toe to toe, if not better physically with them.
Speaker 6 (25:54):
Oh yeah, no, that was very impressive. Yeah. I think
it was Coa's first time where he really went at
I think it was Condon that was guarding him. He
went at Condon and scored on him, and I think
I looked over at you, I was like, that's what
he needs to do, and that's what they need to do, like,
don't don't back down.
Speaker 8 (26:10):
From these guys. And sure enough they started.
Speaker 6 (26:12):
Getting a little bit more confident, they got more physical defensively,
they were bodying up, they were cutting.
Speaker 8 (26:18):
Off the clear path to the hoop because.
Speaker 6 (26:21):
I mean think about like the first five minutes of
the game. I swear every single time Florida got into
the pick of roll, their guards just got a free
lane of their move just about every single time. Well,
when the guards, when the big men chug and recover
the way that they're supposed to and hedge and force
those guards to have to extend themselves a little bit
more on the perimeter and then and then slow down
(26:42):
in that regard.
Speaker 8 (26:44):
The physicality can really start to take over.
Speaker 6 (26:46):
And wear them down. And I think they're big men.
Florida's front court I did feel like got worn down
outside of how I thought that they just they were exhausted,
and which is really surprising for a national championship level
front court to be in that position. So I mean,
kudos to Arizona for what they did the other night.
That was as impressive of win as you could ever
(27:06):
hope for a freshman heavy squad.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
Yeah, and you know, you look how the schedule lays
out too. They do get kind of a I guess
you want to call it a break with the next
you know, the next two games, and they begin the
you know, the U c l A and they have
to go to Yukon after that. So you know, maybe
there's a rhyme or reason to how the schedule was
put together to give themselves, you know, a chance to
kind of maybe just catch up and you know, maybe
get some of the other guys a chance to play
(27:31):
over these next two games. That is that how you
see a plan out.
Speaker 6 (27:34):
I'm not seeing any who's going to be you know,
is a gimme h. And I'm not trying to disrespect them,
but listen, and he's going to be a good team.
I know they were picked to finish last in the
Big twelve or in the Big skuy, but they gave Drake,
who is supposed to be one of the top tier
teams in their.
Speaker 8 (27:52):
Conference, a hell of a run the other night.
Speaker 6 (27:55):
And and the U's got some some quiet stugs on
that squad, So listen. I think Arizona should roll them, obviously,
But I think it's a good enough competitiveness, or I
guess good enough competition for you to get some good
work in, work on some of the things that you
need to work on, because Ucla and Yukon back to
(28:17):
back are going to.
Speaker 8 (28:18):
Be really, really tough, especially considering.
Speaker 6 (28:22):
The type of defense that they like to play. We
all know Cronin, you know Hurley, They're gonna come after
it and it's gonna be fun. But I think yet
to your point, yes, I think the way Tommy structured
this to get a little bit of a reprieve. I mean, listen,
Monday was a high, like a really high high, and
you don't want to have a big letdown by facing
another good team right after that. So come kind of
(28:44):
easier way back into the schedule and now you're gonna
play some good, good teams, but nobody that's considered you know,
maybe a top five team in the country right now.
Maybe down the road it'll it'll prove out with UCLA
or Yukon or whatever like that. But yeah, I think
that was a really shrewd decision by Tommy Lloyd and
how they structured this non con schedule.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
So let me ask you this, and I'm just a
serious question. So Dave and I we talked about this
in the first hour. We've seen this enough and I've
covered teams like this all the time. They win this
game and you've been around long enough in the recent
time that the fan base is gonna go bonkers, and
you know they're gonna buy their tickets to Indianapolis. I
know that's kind of a facicious, but you know what
(29:25):
I'm saying, They go crazy over this win when it's
a long season, and kind of Tommy talk to that.
You know, Okay, nothing's really won in November, and that's
kind of what you want to hear from him. But now,
what do you remember say to the fan base in
Tucson and the Cat fans.
Speaker 8 (29:43):
Well, what I would say is like, you don't have
to temper.
Speaker 6 (29:46):
Your expectations, but I think you need to ratchet it up.
And when Tommy was talking last year about places like
Kansas and Iowa State being the environments that he wished
Mikhail would be, and that's no disrespect to Michal McHale,
when it needs to be loud, will be plenty loud.
We saw it against Houston last year, saw it against
Iowa State last year for sure. But what makes those
(30:09):
other environments really really solid is it doesn't matter who
the competition is, they're always there. They're loud. There's a
lot of tradition a lot of things that that just
just make for a great environment, and I think mchail
it was desperate to be like that and they needed
a reason. I think last year they knew they had
(30:30):
everybody knew we had a good team, But was it
a Final four level team? You know, you can probably
make an argument no, and obviously that baried out this year.
Based on the first game of the season, You're.
Speaker 8 (30:42):
Looking at a squad that definitely has.
Speaker 6 (30:44):
The ability and the talent to get to the Final
Four without a doubt. So there's no reason to not
be excited about your squad. That's what I would say,
is be excited about your squad, come to all those games,
cheer like crazy, created an environment that is just unreal,
and then let that carry forward, hopefully into the tournament.
Because we've been we've been, We've been down this road
(31:05):
so many times where we've gotten some great non conference wins,
but then we get to March and everything kind of
melts away. I just don't.
Speaker 8 (31:13):
Feel, from a cerebral perspective.
Speaker 6 (31:15):
That this team is built like that. I truly don't.
I don't. I'm not saying they're going to get to
the Fall four, but damn I do think that they're
going to give it a hell of a run. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
No, that's a great answer because I wasn't expected that
answer because it was you didn't go to the fan base,
so you went, well, you didn't go to the obvious
fan base, but you said, yeah, they need to show
up because they do. You know, once it's next to
me in the in the games, and we look at
you know, twelve thirteen thousand, and if that sometimes just
the last exhibition, there was eight really eight thousand.
Speaker 8 (31:45):
I mean I couldn't remember when I was a student the.
Speaker 6 (31:49):
Top tier being empty, and it's empty quite a bit.
Yeah now and and and people might not see that
in the lower level, but like that's a factor, and
so yeah, will need to show up. Like there's tickets available, you.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
Can go, Like it's not as.
Speaker 8 (32:05):
Die hard as it once was.
Speaker 5 (32:07):
Yeah, I think I got that email while we've been
sitting here this afternoon about it's being available.
Speaker 3 (32:11):
Yeah the upper upper level seats. Come buy the tickets
for Utah text.
Speaker 2 (32:15):
Yeah, yeah, are you assuming you'll be down for a
few games and tell us real quick, I'll promote your show.
Speaker 3 (32:21):
What you got going?
Speaker 6 (32:23):
Yeah, you know, Michale Madness with Corey Williams, you know,
beloved Corey Williams. He's uh he and I just break
down the game once a week, break down the squad,
kind of look ahead to the bigger max ships as
we move forward. And so it's weekly. Usually changes between
Tuesdays and Thursdays this year, depending on what the schedule
looks like. But we just broke down something on Tuesday
(32:45):
with Florida and next week we'll be back to talk
about UCLA probably next Thursday, and it'll be fun. So
you can check us out on YouTube at phn X
Sports or just look up Michale Madness on your favorite podcast.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
Super Thank you so appreciate. Yet, that was great, It
was good. Yes, that was good.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
I thought that his last question about the about the
fan base, because yeah, you know, be excited, be excited
and show up.
Speaker 5 (33:12):
Yeah, I'm surprised that there's that many empty seats really
last game with the tickets of.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
What's what's going on? You think there there's they have tickets.
They just wanted to you.
Speaker 5 (33:22):
Know again, ten years ago you couldn't get a ticket.
Now it's like you can get tickets. So your buddies, Dave,
there there are buddies. These old guys that run out
of money.
Speaker 2 (33:30):
Yeah, ticket now wait to the bigger game TV. Right,
Unfortunately that's pay a People use that as an excuse. Well,
we've met maybe more than a year ago. Right, We've
been to about about thirty games, you know, and we
looked how many times that we looked at each other
said this is what's here.
Speaker 4 (33:47):
We've a few times now it's gotten to a point
of we're not surprised.
Speaker 3 (33:50):
But that's too bad. Yeah, too bad.
Speaker 4 (33:53):
I mean, tickets are not It's a similar story with
It's going to be a similar story with football this
week where they come off a road win. You it's Colorado,
but they are one went away from Bowl eligibility and
that's all you asked of them this season. So true, True,
they're in a position to win, and so I think
the fans should be able to, should be able to.
(34:14):
We'll see if they will honor the fact that they're
in a in that position and and you get to
might get to see history with no fa fido.
Speaker 3 (34:21):
Yeah, and there shouldn't be any rain disaster.
Speaker 5 (34:28):
Let's just let's just have a night. I mean, it's
a day game. I mean, I don't know what else
there's nothing. There's no excuses, well other than the fact
that it's you know, it's costs and it's it's going
you know, it's something you have to pay for. So
you know whether or not Tucson can you know, put
fifty thousand people in the stadium and who knows.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
So if I was, if I was with Jay and
you were jaying, he said, and I said that.
Speaker 3 (34:48):
No excuses, there's always some kind.
Speaker 2 (34:52):
So we'll see this on coming. Let's get there first
and then we'll see you on Monday. What we talk
about because and if they win, hey, you know power,
like you said, this is what they had hope are
right to get to the to the Bowl eligible part
of the portion of the.
Speaker 4 (35:06):
Portion of the season. They probably should have been there
a little bit earlier. But let's see if they and
let's not say they're gonna win right away. Yeah, yeah,
of course not, but they have a change. You know
what the spread is, right, Arizona by four four and
a half of hose Okay, okay, that's pretty good. And
Kansas wash you had him as a win against kandas right, yes,
protect the home court and their home field and here
they are. Okay, let's take a break, come back, maybe

a student here, right, he's you know, he's kind of
been around the program and he's been he's an older
guy and he's got, you know, different perspectives. Yeah, so
(40:03):
we'll see, we'll see to let's go football real quick
and just to kind of brush through that, we'll see
what happens this weekend at one o'clock, one thirty game
the favorite Kansas I thought was gonna be pretty good
at the beginning of the year.
Speaker 3 (40:17):
Pretty good is relative relative twelve.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
Yeah, but then they played I can't remember their second
game of this season, Cincinnati. They got they got smoked
by Cincinnati. They couldn't stop Cincinnati. So maybe it'll be
a high scoring game on Saturday.
Speaker 4 (40:31):
Uh yeah, I mean it should be well, relatively high scoring.
I think there's gonna be very few defensive stops, and
I think that favors Arizona because they should have the
better defense come Saturday. Kansas's defense has not been good
most season long.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
So yeah, he's gonna take advantage of that. Hello, you're
on the air and I in the ball.
Speaker 3 (40:52):
Who's this you're still celebrating? Is that what he called late.
Speaker 9 (40:59):
I haven't stopped. I wanted to know how much I
bet you and wom did?
Speaker 3 (41:03):
What was we got? We got?
Speaker 9 (41:06):
I can't remember. I can't remember what the stinks were
you got?
Speaker 3 (41:08):
We tape every show. You can try to find it, but.
Speaker 9 (41:14):
Uh, Steves, do me a favor. Keep that ticket and
sign it for me, please, and so I can put
it in my scrap book. Which ticket the one that
we bet you're you're you're you're losing ticket?
Speaker 3 (41:23):
Oh for Toronto?
Speaker 2 (41:26):
Actually he was on dreft Kings, So there's no ticket,
but I'll say I'll screen save it for.
Speaker 9 (41:29):
You, all right there, you're going, you gotta sign it
for me.
Speaker 3 (41:32):
Hey, dude, any any one of those teams have won?
You guys were oh he no, yeah, and you know what.
Speaker 9 (41:41):
Team? I called friends and everything, and I asked all
of them, and I think I even asked you I
had was Toronto the better team? And kind of half
of them said yes? But then you know what half
of them said, Uh, in a seven game series, no
way that the best team wins. And Toronto had a
million chances to put that thing away and they didn't.
Speaker 2 (42:03):
So after games they had After game five, what did
what were your percentage to win?
Speaker 3 (42:07):
What did you think? What did you think?
Speaker 6 (42:09):
Zero?
Speaker 8 (42:10):
I thought you were gonna lose for sure.
Speaker 3 (42:13):
Yeah, because I thought Toronto.
Speaker 9 (42:15):
I mean, I okay, if you're asking one hundred percent Toronto.
Speaker 6 (42:19):
I should say yeah.
Speaker 9 (42:21):
And then I really thought they were gonna do it.
And they I mean, come on, Steve Whan. They had
bases loaded out, uh, second and third, one out. I mean,
they hit the ball to the wall.
Speaker 3 (42:34):
It was there, there was it was amazing.
Speaker 4 (42:36):
There was a swing and a play where it looked
like it was heading out and it drops short and
then it gets stuck into the wall. That's the play,
and that's that's the way Toronto, and that that's that's why,
that's his destiny. That's why I said the destiny because
that's where they lost the game.
Speaker 9 (42:50):
Ye there, and and I've always to believed in the
baseball gods, and they were smiling on the Dodgers that play.
Speaker 2 (42:59):
Okay, So I'm the conversation with a guy or two
during the game, and so game seven, right, would you have,
knowing your baseball knowledge, Okay, you have the situation with
the catcher I forget his name at that he hits
into double plays a lot.
Speaker 3 (43:15):
He hits the hell out of ball.
Speaker 2 (43:17):
He's consistent, good hitter, but he's a slow runner and
the possibility of grounding out. What happened? Okay, so you
have a guy on third, one out. Do you think,
as a coach or a manager, that's a safety squeezed
the guy in from third, Sacrifice the run, sacrifice the
the out, get the guy.
Speaker 9 (43:33):
In, Nah, because they just can't do it, especially a
guy like that. He hits bombs. He has no clue
about bunnying to save his life. I mean me or
you could have gotten done it better than he he would.
Nine out of ten times, that guy hits the ball
hard somewhere in the air and it's a run.
Speaker 3 (43:53):
Yeah, and that's all that's all he needed, right, A
deep fly.
Speaker 8 (43:56):
Yeah, that's yeah, that's all he needed.
Speaker 9 (43:58):
And I was scared his heck, I thought for sure
he'd been hitting the ball.
Speaker 22 (44:03):
He'd been killing the.
Speaker 6 (44:04):
Dodgers all series.
Speaker 9 (44:06):
The guy just taking the Dodgers all series.
Speaker 3 (44:09):
Is var show.
Speaker 5 (44:10):
Not getting a good enough lead off third base there
and then getting thrown out by.
Speaker 9 (44:14):
Now they're saying that he did the right thing according
to Baseball Royle.
Speaker 8 (44:19):
Or whatever you want to call it okay, and.
Speaker 9 (44:21):
And every you know, all the fans are complaining that
he should have got off farther, but now they're saying,
according to baseball teachings or whatever nowadays, that he did
the right thing. And I was always taught go get
off as far as your third basement is off, but
he wasn't. He was off three feet maybe, and and
months he was off. Can that was That was the
(44:46):
weird play, big time weird. And then obviously Rojot's almost
falling down and having to get back up and and
make that throw home that was well, was amazing.
Speaker 2 (44:57):
What about the near collision on the outfield on that
long hit.
Speaker 9 (45:02):
I don't know if you guys saw the Jimmy Kimmel there,
Kiki and all those guys were on it, and they
asked Ikey about it, and he said, uh, I got
posterized by my own teammates and uh and he said,
he goes, I laid on the ground and I was
just there thinking I lost the World Series for my team,
and then uh pie has came back and said okay,
(45:25):
but uh yeah, So that that that had everything. I
was rivetedt Steve, I don't know about you, man, but.
Speaker 2 (45:32):
It was a good game, man, it could have gone
either way at any I think Toronto lost in Game six?
Uh your second basement player.
Speaker 5 (45:39):
I agree with well again ROAs made that great play
at second base.
Speaker 3 (45:42):
Yeah, yeah, the guy that.
Speaker 5 (45:44):
You know, Yeah, I just don't even you know, you
don't even really consider him as being one of their stars.
Speaker 9 (45:48):
But he made He wasn't And actually I was cutting
and screaming why was he in there? Because didn't you
think like if they would have kept by had been there,
he had a puncher's chance of hitting something. And I'm like,
rots don't have a chance to get.
Speaker 6 (46:02):
To do anything.
Speaker 9 (46:03):
Yeah, and how to get or an extra beds in September?
Speaker 3 (46:06):
Yea, yeah, well, enjoy it, enjoy it.

under in your in your words of free peat, my

next year.
Speaker 9 (46:23):

Speaker 3 (46:26):
Okay, got a good chance.
Speaker 8 (46:27):
All right, take take care.
Speaker 5 (46:29):
You can't have a repeat. If you don't have a repeat,
So they do it. Yeah, it sounds like something I
just made that up. We gotta yeah it sounded like, hey,
we gotta call. Hello, You're on the air and nine
on the ball.
Speaker 17 (46:40):
Hi, Steve, Hi, Dave.
Speaker 8 (46:41):
This is Tara, Hi, Tara.
Speaker 23 (46:45):
Hi, Hiight.
Speaker 17 (46:46):
Well, I just wanted to call. I'm a huge fan
of the show and I just.
Speaker 22 (46:51):
Want to tell you guys are doing a great job.
Speaker 2 (46:53):
Thank you, thank you. I think you want to tell
us more because I got your text. You're gonna scold me.
Speaker 3 (46:58):
I know you are.
Speaker 17 (47:00):
I'm not gonna scold you, but I just have to
tell you that the other day. I was the other night,
was watching the Florida game. Fully expected us to lose
and we killed it. And I was texting today, I'm like,
so this is what we do.
Speaker 22 (47:14):
Like we're preseason giant killers. That is who we are
at Arizona Basketball.
Speaker 17 (47:18):
And I just think we need to embrace that.
Speaker 2 (47:20):
Okay, and you are I mean, come on, I said
this in the column. Lout was fantastic thing November, right,
Sean not so much. But he's still won one big games.
Tommy's doing the same thing. So you want to embrace it.
But guess what happens you go to March.
Speaker 6 (47:38):
No.
Speaker 22 (47:38):
I know, and I know everyone's gonna be like, oh,
it's gonna go downhill from here because I think Day's
Wright and Arizona fans can never be happy. But I
just I just think we rock, and I mean we've
done it, we do.
Speaker 17 (47:50):
We've done it with Maryland several years ago.
Speaker 22 (47:52):
And I just think like that needs to be our
new nickname. Preseason Giant Killers. That's who we are.
Speaker 3 (47:57):
Okay, I'll remember that one thing. The other thing, don't.
Speaker 2 (47:59):
Don't you gonna called me for something else, to call
my demographics or something.
Speaker 22 (48:06):
Yeah, you know you have a good, strong female demographic,
big fan of the show. So anyway, I hope more
women call in.
Speaker 3 (48:13):
Okay, well, thank you.
Speaker 4 (48:14):
I think she's the first since it's my first, because
there have been a few. But thank you, Tara.
Speaker 3 (48:19):
Thanks Tara.
Speaker 22 (48:20):
Yes, well, thanks for having me and you guys have
a great afternoon.
Speaker 3 (48:24):
Thank you very much. Thanks for calling in. Appreciate it.
Speaker 5 (48:27):
And so yeah, that's good pre season Giant Killers. Not
last year though they were.
Speaker 3 (48:32):
Three no, no, and okay, the preseason killed us.
Speaker 4 (48:35):
Okay, so quote unquote us quote unquote us.
Speaker 2 (48:39):
So let me say they went four and five or
whatever it was. Uh, did it end up better than
you expected last year? Or were you expected it last year,
given the start, given the start better than expected. Yes,
I agree. Okay, we got another calls. You have another
question for you. Hello, you're on the air and line
the ball.
Speaker 23 (48:59):
Tara's heart in the right place. But no, we're not
embracing that.
Speaker 3 (49:05):
This is tea money.
Speaker 23 (49:08):
Yes, yes, when we only embrace the third weekend of
the tournament, that's what we embrace wholeheartedly, and we need
to get back there.
Speaker 3 (49:17):
But what we did.
Speaker 23 (49:18):
See against Florida is and that had an Elite eight
te Elite eight the final four championship vibe to it,
and who knows, we could see Florida again in the
third weekend, but what we saw was grit and uh man,
this Kartankov dude, like this guy is for real. But
uh yeah, no, I think uh, I think we got
(49:39):
we got the guns, we got the horses to do it,
and I should expect it. That's what we expect from Tommy.
Speaker 3 (49:45):
So that's what we too money.
Speaker 2 (49:47):
I know you you watch a lot of the football,
watchloag basketball. Big u of a guy. Are you gonna say, okay,
we have thirty games, thirty games or so, how many
times are you going to see this.
Speaker 23 (49:56):
Co Opete, how many times? What are you talking about?
Speaker 3 (50:02):
The way the way he played? How many times?
Speaker 23 (50:04):
Oh that that version of him? Yes man, well true freshman,
but just his composure, his demeanor. I don't think he
knows better. He may just be that guy. He just
doesn't know any better and he goes out and does
that and doesn't realize he's a freshman. He just I
(50:25):
think family is a big thing. Like he comes from
a family of D one athletes and pro athletes. He
may just expect that from himself. So over under of percentages.
Speaker 3 (50:36):
Yeah, yeah, give you say that, we say we see it.
Speaker 23 (50:41):
Twenty twenty five percent of the time he becase he's
gonna go over twenty four points.
Speaker 2 (50:45):
Okay, that's it. It's eight games or so. Okay, I'll
hold you to that. I'll remember that. Uh and let
me ask you one both you guys who final questions?
Speaker 3 (50:53):
Uh? Don't you already love it more than you love
Dayton the whole year? Oh? Eighten? Yeah? Oh I don't know.
Speaker 23 (50:59):
Oh aigen Yeah Aien had had motivational issues.
Speaker 3 (51:05):
Yeah right, yeah, yeah still that you know, you're right
he does.
Speaker 2 (51:10):
I don't even know. Thank you, t Money, appreciate the call.
All right, Yeah, yeah, Aidon had that game maybe two
or three times, maybe two or three times Oregon game
if I can remember when Deshaun wasn't coaching, and maybe
another time or two.
Speaker 4 (51:23):
When When you say that type of performance, in that
type of magnitude, yeah, I would agree that he didn't
have that often.
Speaker 2 (51:29):
So let me ask you about he got thirty shots
with uh with CoA. How many times is he going
to pull that off?
Speaker 4 (51:36):
H I think he can have at least two more
because Arizona's gonna need it.
Speaker 5 (51:42):
Yeah. Yeah, so not often. Gonna need to find a
little more balance too. I mean sure, it can't just
rely on two guys to score, right.
Speaker 2 (51:48):
That's why I say that he's gonna have moments like this,
but not all the not even half the time.
Speaker 3 (51:54):
Right before the skin No due.
Speaker 2 (51:57):
Respect to this question, what did you see before he
played that game?
Speaker 3 (52:00):
In the in the exhibition game, we didn't see much.
Speaker 2 (52:03):
You know, I don't know, but maybe in nights I grow,
maybe when the lights came on and the popcorn is
being sold here he is, You don't a good sign.
Speaker 5 (52:11):
It's a good sign because there's gonna be a lot
of those moments, a lot of those opportunities here a couple.
Speaker 3 (52:15):
Of months this year, no question. Okay, how are we
doing with time? We gotta go.
Speaker 2 (52:19):
Hey, thanks to money, Thanks Tara, thanks everybody else.
Speaker 3 (52:22):
Appreciate your call. We'll see you tomorrow
