Breaking down all the exes and ohs. This is I
on the Ball with Steve Rivera on Fox Sports sporteen
fifty eight.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Hey, welcome back to flying the ball here on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty I'm Steve Rivera. You're jakins As Now
with us Rey with breaking news.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
This is I on the Ball, Breaking news on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty eight.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
All right, starting out with the obvious ones. Arizona men's
basketball will be hosting Utah techs men's team starts at seven.
Arizona is favored by ESPN H thirty three and a
half and their matchup predictor is ninety nine percent. Arizona's
gonna take home the W.
Speaker 4 (00:43):
Last night was.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
The first official game under coach Becky Burke. Gotta win
sixty two to fifty nine against UC riverside back.
Speaker 5 (00:52):
Good for her. No, I don't do those games. I
gave up on that, dude. They're just just too many
game games, you know.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
To do.
Speaker 5 (00:58):
Yeah, yeah, good, good for you know what. Look, it's
a complete rebuild. Any any win is a good win.
I don't care if they're playing you know, you're talking
to Tim Timbuck to you or you know, Duke just
any you get any win as a win, and you
just take that and deal with it for the rest.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
Of the year.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Yeah, following that up, Tomorrow's big game is going to
be against Kansas. Been talking about it for most of
the week obviously, Homecoming, Military Appreciation Day, all that good stuff.
Game starts at one thirty til getting I believe, opens at.
Speaker 4 (01:33):
Seven or seven thirty. There you go, six hours before
kickoffs seven thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Volleyball won their game last night against Texas Tech on
a three game win streak. Now won the match three
to one, and they will be playing again next week
up in Tempe and Desert Financial Arena against ASU. All right,
this was a kind of a snooze fest last night.
(02:00):
But Thursday night football, I.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
Changed the channel. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:04):
Look, I'm bored as hell now on weeknights because there's
no baseball on right there. I had had a Dodgar
game on every day, and I'm like, last night, I'm
going like, there's nothing else to watch. I mean, I'm
looking for a bad movie or something to watch. Because
that game got so bad. I quit it at halftime.
I said, I can't watch this anymore. Yeah, it was
it was tough. I mean, I mean more penalties than
first downs. Yeah, I mean the Broncos didn't get a
(02:28):
first down until midway through the second quarter.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
What's what's an issue?
Speaker 4 (02:32):
They were terrible. They were just.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Bad, really bad.
Speaker 5 (02:36):
Their punter had the yips, he had like a he
nearly whiffed on a punt. I mean literally nearly whiffed,
and it was like a eight yard punt, and then
the next punt was like twenty four yards and then another.
Speaker 6 (02:50):
Punt got blowed.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
No, that was the Broncos.
Speaker 5 (02:51):
Who Yeah, I mean just it was just it was
just bad all the way around, all the way around.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
And fortunately I had I had benched my rate his quarterback.
Speaker 5 (03:00):
Genius, have Geno Smith on because we're a two quarterback league. Yeah,
I got Joe Burrow and he's been out and so
I don't for a couple of weeks, I didn't even
have a second starting quarterback. Now I've got you, Kobe Brissette.
There you go, which which is gonna have an impact
on my picks?
Speaker 3 (03:16):
You'll see, there's no way you take that, all right?
Keeping that going though, once more NFL News Commander's quarterback
Jaden Daniels uh doesn't have Ligaman damage apparently and won't
need surgery after he dislocated his elbow on I think Sun.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
Yeah, I don't know how he didn't tear everything up
in that album.
Speaker 5 (03:42):
It was like backwards, yeah, you know, I mean it
was like he could have scratched his his his right
ear with his left hand from behind.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
It was just really gross, so bad to Washington.
Speaker 6 (03:57):
Yeah, they didn't look too good keeping a go though.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Uh More.
Speaker 6 (04:01):
I don't know if this is.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Necessarily with like the big betting story that came out,
but this is more betting news with people getting in trouble.
I guess the n C double A has a band.
I think six players from three more guys who threw
games or shared betting info. Schools that were involved were
New Orleans, Mississippi Valley State, and Arizona State. The two
(04:27):
shopper yeah right, the two players at Mississippi Valley State
where Donovan Sanders and Alvin Streddick, And from ASU it
was bj Freeman who was shared to who was found
to have shared information and then Day Day Hunter, d'aquavion
(04:49):
Short and Jamond Vincent for New Orleans were the ones
that got caught up.
Speaker 4 (04:53):
And again all this had to do with prop bats.
Speaker 5 (04:56):
Yeah right, they weren't throwing games, but they were you know,
the whole day of prop bets.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
They're going to have to do something. Yeah, they really are,
no question, Yeah, no question.
Speaker 6 (05:06):
Also following that up with some more Betty news.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Actually, ex NBA player Damon Jones pleads not guilty in
the gambling case that was the big gambling case that
came out.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
It's funny today I was doing on my computer at work,
and you know how you get on MS and you
get these little stories that there's one gambling book available
blah blah blah, you know how to gamble? New book.
You click on it. I clicked on it. One hundred
and seventy three dollars. I said, right, there's a bad gamble.
You have to pay one hundred and seventy three dollars
to learn.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
And to become an even worse gambler than I am.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
So give me the seventy one seventy three dollars. That's
like a ten dollars book.
Speaker 6 (05:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
Yeah, that's like something you find like on the way
out of like a grocery store or something, you know,
keeping that going. Mark Sanchez is out Wow. Fox Sports
after his arrest as sure as Today's sunshine.
Speaker 5 (06:03):
Dude, man, like I said, you got lost your job
over a parking spot.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Yeah, well I know, but that's what But that's what
he was pissed off about. Well, what was the story?
What was the real story.
Speaker 5 (06:14):
This truck pulled into this walking in a loading section
of the Yeah, and he got mad that this truck
was there, and he wanted to fight the guy.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
That's beyond the parking spot. That's kind of like something else.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
But he just went up to and told me you
can't park there and started yelling at him. Next thing
you know, it's it's game on. The guy Pepper spraised
him and all kinds of stuff and then knife him.
But she's lucky to be alive.
Speaker 6 (06:43):
Seriously, his replacement is going to be Super Bowl winning.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Quarterback Drew Brees, So okay, he will be in the
broadcast revolving Door.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Seriously, if you played sports, your journalism world, just what
you're fighting against these guys, Drew Beeres and Drew Brees.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
I believe I believe it, Jackuars.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
In fact, he called for internship. Oh he did, Drew Brees.
Speaker 7 (07:08):
I know.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Actually your Sanchez did.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
Know how to work the board. You know what I mean.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
Jaguars are going to be playing their NFL home games
in twenty twenty seven in Orlando. Uh, they're gonna be
doing that while their stadium gets renovations in Jacksonville. Obviously,
this is I guess this is a little bit off
the beaten path, but I thought it was really interesting.
Big game tonight apart from Arizona is Kansas and North
(07:36):
Carolina at five pm.
Speaker 6 (07:37):
Yes, basketball, Yeah, I'm excited.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
For that one.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
That's what I called. I called the guy from the paper. Sorry,
I can't, I can't do it. It's in the bad time, Arizona.
I mean North Cana plays Kansas. You know, really, do
you have another guy? So that's where we're getting his
partners the same at the same good paper.
Speaker 5 (07:56):
Okay, No, you know what, These games are fun. I'm
glad they play these games. Yeah, there were more of them.
I mean, Arizona's got plenty of them. Unfortunately none of
them are here. But you know, I mean like they
got you. You see, you know total I'll be in
in Vegas next week, so we'll be in you know.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
When is that the Saturday weekend?
Speaker 5 (08:15):
Next next Friday? Ucl is next Friday. Next Friday night
will be at a place called Blondies that planning Hollywood,
watching that game and uh, you know, who knows how
much we'll have on.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Them, Gobby, make sure that google Blondies, Gebby.
Speaker 8 (08:28):
It's a it's a it's a bar and grill in
the mall. Okay, it's not a strip club. If almost
says she loves you, make sure she loves.
Speaker 4 (08:40):
That's where we watched the Duke game from a couple
of from a few years ago, and in that in
that place. You know, it's funny too because we're there
and you think we're in Vegas, Michale North. We had
to beg them to put that game on.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
Oh really yeah, Like they had all these games and
we're like, where's Duke Arizona?
Speaker 4 (08:57):
What channels that on?
Speaker 2 (08:59):
Like really they're equal opportunities.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
Yeah, man, yeah, it's I mean, one thing I really
do like about college basketball, I think with so much,
with how how big the out of conference schedule can be.
You see those top teams playing each other, and that
that's something that I really like compared to college football.
Speaker 6 (09:15):
Where some teams so we'll try to avoid those, yeah exactly.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Well, see because Kansas supposed to be pretty good. Uh,
they're not picked, they're picked below Arizona.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
Actually, right, but you have.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
A freshman that's supposed to be pretty good too. There's
so many of them, so many good ones. Right, let's
see what you got, man, start seeing what you got.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
This was an interesting one that I saw, kind of
following up that Kansas un C game. So five star
college basketball prospect Dylan Mingo missed his flight to u
n C for an official visit.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
Well, the flight was canceled, but it was for a
visit to u n C.
Speaker 6 (09:46):
And it was well, I googled it and.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
The first the first results that came up said it
was because of the shutdown, right, so of course, yeah,
that was interesting.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
Well, worried about my flight to Vegas next week?
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Yeah, you've been driving, baby, it could.
Speaker 4 (09:59):
Be mana if if they canceled, we're hopping in the
car and we're gone. It's not gonna keep us from going,
that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
You don't have to worry about Luke back Texas, but
you do have to work.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
Wickenberg Arizona will be will be all day Saturday at
the West Gate, which is very cool. That's such a
cool place to watch games.
Speaker 6 (10:14):
This was an interesting one too.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
Trump pardoned ex MLB star Darryl Strab Yeah, but.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
Was he needing to be partoned for tax evasion?
Speaker 6 (10:25):
And uh it was drug charges.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
I didn't know he was in.
Speaker 4 (10:29):
I didn't know that. I didn't know either, that Wastberry.
I'm not I'm not shocked from the Mets.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
Yeah. No, no, I say that because because Miles it
used to be Miles Simon's brother in law.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
Right, guy's a big turn. No, Darryl Strawbery, he came
to he he the Dodgers gave him all this money
to come and play, and then he was just on
drugs the whole time.
Speaker 9 (10:52):
O man, the whole time. Jeez, there's a rant from
Tommy Lasorda about that. Really yeah, just okay, it's got it.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
It's got to be somewhere.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
But there's just a rant about, you know, how they
gave him this money and this opportunity and all he
did with it was just come over the Dodgers.
Speaker 9 (11:07):
And do drugs the whole time he was there. I
suspended a bunch of times before they got rid of him. Man,
So I don't know. This was a little a little
bit of an interesting one too. The NCAA is discussing
revoking the Field of sixty eight media networks, broadcast and
press privileges. According to Rob Reinhart, that is because they
(11:28):
call the Opening Day Marathon that the Field of sixty
eight hosted on Monday, I think it was Monday.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
They called it a disaster. The game, the games that
they were streaming went down multiple times. No apology was issued,
and yeah.
Speaker 5 (11:42):
Al it's like this thing with YouTube and TV and somebody.
You got to do better job, man, that's yeah, yeah,
And then.
Speaker 6 (11:50):
Yeah, that's it for me.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
A couple one big game to look out for college
football though tonight too late in Memphis.
Speaker 5 (11:56):
Yeah, well that's a group of five, group of six
keys me elimination game.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Well, because Memphis I think was the highest rated in
the bracket.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
Yeah, right now, all I.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Know is I got to go back and see what
I want to pick in that there was all the
game you're going to go.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
With that game? Oh, I haven't told you who I'm taking.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
No, I know, and I already picked who I picked.
So I'm contemplating changing my changing my gears. Okay, well
you're gonna have to pick first today.
Speaker 8 (12:25):
Then Okay, see, so you got to commit to it.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
I won last week. That's why it snowed yesterday. Let's go.

Laurence Journal World, Dave, how you doing.
Speaker 15 (17:50):
Doing great? I'm happy to be here in Tucson and
excited to cover what should be hopefully a good, exciting
college football game tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Tell us the truth. You're happy because the weather is fantastic.
Speaker 4 (18:01):
You know.
Speaker 16 (18:02):
I actually I grew up.
Speaker 15 (18:03):
In Phoenix, so I'm used to this heat into like November.
But I do enjoy when it gets to like sixties
in October in Kansas. It gives me the fall field,
like the Halloween feel, and you just don't get that
when it's eighty five degrees outside.
Speaker 4 (18:21):
It was a little toasting on Halloween night.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
Yeah, so you've been covered the team for how long?
Speaker 15 (18:27):
This is my second year in Lawrence covering KU and
then some some local high school stuff.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
So let me ask you. Because I thought they were
going to be better than what they were, and then
then I saw him against Cincinnati and I'm thinking that's
not the Kansas team I thought they would be. What's up?
Speaker 15 (18:43):
Yeah, you know, it's it's been a rough year defensively
for sure. Just it's the past two years. It's just
been a little off with this Kansas team.
Speaker 16 (18:56):
And in this year they just really had a.
Speaker 15 (18:57):
Hard time starting to run up in the pass, big
explosive plays they're letting up. It's it's just been difficult because,
you know, this offense has been able to run the
ball really effectively the the past game.
Speaker 16 (19:10):
It's had some good times since bad times, but.
Speaker 15 (19:12):
The run game has been pretty effective throughout the season.
Special teams has been pretty incredible. But the defense has
just been a bit of an issue. It has been
something that has been trying to get resolved and it
just hasn't quite gotten there yet at this point.
Speaker 5 (19:27):
When when you talk about that, I see, you know,
see some of the scores, you know a lot of
scores in the forties and whatnot. I mean, is there
any certain thing you know, are they are they bad
against everything or just bad against the pass?
Speaker 4 (19:37):
Can they not stop the run?
Speaker 2 (19:39):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (19:39):
You you said something about big plays?
Speaker 5 (19:41):
I mean, what what can we look for tomorrow that
that is going to say this is what Kansas has
been all year long?
Speaker 15 (19:50):
Well, yeah, it's it's been a little bit of everything.
Unfortunately for Kansas. It's they haven't been great. I feel
like they've been better against the run the last few
weeks at least. Maybe that's just my recollection of it.
Outside of the Texas Tech game the past two weeks,
I've been able to stop the run pretty well the
past games.
Speaker 16 (20:10):
Has just been an.
Speaker 15 (20:11):
Issue all games all year long. The secondary is just
kind of not really held up quite as much as
you would like. And like I said, there's just a
lot of busts. It's allowing big plays and it's a
big problem when you have a quarterback like Fafeta you're
going up against too. I mean, was it two weeks
ago when he you know, just four passes on like
twenty five attempts something like that. So yeah, it's it's
(20:35):
going to be a struggle to kind of contain what
the feeda and what the Arizona offense can do. And
then that'll probably be the tale of what ends up
happening on Saturday, is if Kansas can kind of limit
that Arizona offense.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
How is the fan based over there? I know football
hasn't been that great over the years. Basketball is obviously
king there kind of like it is here. I think
they were pretty high on them last year or two, right,
Are they still holding hope for them?
Speaker 14 (21:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 15 (21:06):
It's Unlast year was interesting, it you know, it was
kind of like Arizona a little bit where they came
in with these really high expectations and just you know,
things just did not work out. You know, they would
five and seven. It would have been the first time
I believe in program history that they would have gone
bowling three straight years, or at least the first time
since like the forties. Had they gotten to six.
Speaker 16 (21:27):
Wins last year, But.
Speaker 15 (21:28):
They finished five and seven and they definitely cooled off
a little bit of excitement for the team. But this
is still a team that is trending in the right direction.
Speaker 16 (21:38):
You know, like I said, football has not been well
known at Kansas for.
Speaker 15 (21:43):
Quite some time. I mean the decade and a half
plus for Lancelipol took over the job. You know, they
would cap at it about three wins a season, and
you know, they would be lucky to win one or
two big twelve games a year. And you know something
that something Lance light Bul talked about after beating Oklahoma
State last weekend was this, this is a program that
isn't quite accustomed to winning five games, and so to
get to five games, to be five and four in
(22:05):
November is a huge accomplishment. And you know, with the
new stadium and the resources that are coming in. There's
definitely excitement for the Kansas team. I think last year
and just the up and down year they've had this
year's maybe kind of let some of that excitement slip
a little bit, but you know, it's there's still is
(22:26):
excitement for KU football. There's still is excitement for what's
being built there and and what Lance Liphold has done
with the team.
Speaker 4 (22:32):
So if Kansas is going to win this game, how
are they going to win that?
Speaker 14 (22:36):
Who? What?
Speaker 4 (22:36):
What?
Speaker 14 (22:37):
What?
Speaker 4 (22:37):
You know?
Speaker 5 (22:38):
What do we need to look out for? If they
start doing a certain thing? How do they beat Arizona?
Speaker 15 (22:44):
Yeah, I think it comes down to Kansas's rushing ability.
Arizona's defense has been much improved this year and something
really positive I think you've seen. But this is at
last week was the first.
Speaker 16 (22:56):
Time that Kansas has had their their top.
Speaker 15 (22:58):
Two running backs healthy, and they both carried the ball
thirteen times, got in the end zone at least once,
and got over sixty yards each and they really power
that team to a win. And that's without Giel and
Daniels really running at all last week. And so when
you get those three all working together and spelling each
other and giving each other some grounds that this offense
(23:19):
could really put up points. It's a very run heavy team.
It's very fast, and they like to really emphasize the run.
You know that they've been doing some tight end injuries lately,
so to kind of keep the offense moving and focusing
on that run, they've been doing a lot more jumbo
sets and bringing out sixth offensive lineman Nolan Gorsica, So
you might see him a lot, you know, not necessarily
(23:40):
even in the low red area. You might see him
around midfield come out or at the start of drives.
And Kansas really emphasized the run. I think that'll be big.
You know, Kansas really has to establish the run, and
they're gonna need to do something to contain no Fafeita,
you know, get him off his rhythm of little bit.
You know that they've got some good pass rushers who
(24:02):
maybe just haven't quite gotten totally home yet this year,
but still have a lot of talent and have done
well previously. And and so that's gonna be the big
thing for Kansas is stepping up and and limiting Forefida
and and you know, corralling him into the pocket and
you know, getting him off his rhythm. And then also
running the ball well and effectively.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
Yeah, that's been their concern. The coaches have talked that
h talked out about Arizona in the press conferences this week,
mostly Papita.
Speaker 15 (24:31):
Yeah, yeah, I mean Feta's as you guys, it's well know,
you know, he's a pretty incredible quarterback, very accurate. He's
really rare where he's one of those quarterbacks you feel
like he can really play in structure or out of structure.
You know, he has the legs to escape and maneuver
and and do things that you know some quarterbacks can't
physically do. But he's also really smart and knows where
(24:54):
to put the ball and is accurate, and and so
containing Fafida not just by keeping him in the pocket,
but you know, containing his ability and the limiting him.
I think that's going to be key for for Kansas.
It's it's definitely one of the big things that they've
mentioned going into this game.
Speaker 5 (25:11):
All Right, a lot of points are not a lot
of points in this game? Okay, are we taking the
over the under? It's fifty three and a half or
something like that.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
I'll stay over right away.
Speaker 15 (25:21):
Yeah, it's if to hammer that over fifty and a half.
Speaker 2 (25:27):
So just just you know, we don't believe in game.
Speaker 16 (25:31):
Yeah I don't either.
Speaker 15 (25:34):
Twenty bucks on it the first time and I was like,
I'm too broke to do that.
Speaker 5 (25:37):
Since then, yeah, fifty seven and a half, that's that's
still a lot though. Yeah, but you know, well there
that can put a lot of points up, and if
and if Kansas is going to put some points up,
then yeah, you got.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
To hammer that.
Speaker 15 (25:51):
Yeah, I've been really impressed to said Daggy. And then
the Arizona offense issue and the way they've been able
to rebound last season and really kind of turned this
offense around and with Kansas kind of get that run
game going and Janelen Daniels can be effected in the pocket,
and yeah, I think there's gonna be a lot of
points on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
I like upsetting my partner here, Jay, every now and again.
I'll do it right now. So what are your thoughts
on your alma mater?
Speaker 15 (26:16):
My alma mater is Arizona State. I'm measure if you
guys did the homework.
Speaker 4 (26:20):
On that's figure Phoenix.
Speaker 15 (26:23):
Yeah, it's it's a good time I think to be
in Arizona State. Alum. You know, I'm pleased with Kenny
Dillingham obviously. I think he's a great coach who looks
like he does genuinely want to be around Tempee for
the long haul, and so that's what he's exciting when
when you have a guy like that. Obviously, it's been
(26:44):
a year that does not live up to the expectations
set going in. But you know, that's just football, that's
just college football, that's just you know, nothing in life
has progressed as linearly, and so I think Arizona has
had this Arizona State excuse me, has had this every
few decades or so where they pop out a ten
win season, look really good, and then haven't been able
(27:04):
to sustain it. So I'm really intrigued to see in
twenty twenty six, twenty twenty seven can can as to
kind of rise back up another ten win season, kind
of keep contending for the big twelve, and you know,
get out of the spell of just, you know, once
thor eight ten years popping up having a good season
and then it's fading back into seven eight wins.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
It's funny. I've been here thirty some years, Jason Native,
and you said pretty much with Arizona when we talked
about it, certainly can't can't sustain some consistency. Yeah, you know,
it's crazy.
Speaker 15 (27:33):
Yeah, that's there's State of Arizona for you, it's pretty similar.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
Yeah, you know, I.
Speaker 5 (27:38):
Know you've only been up there a couple of years.
But we haven't asked anybody this in a while. But
what do the fans think of, you know, the four
teams that have come from the Pac Twelve into the league?
And do they feel like it's made the league better?
Do they like it more? Did they kind of think
they're kids from the other neighborhood, you know what I'm saying?
Or how's how is the Big twelve sort of bond
(28:00):
to do this league that they have now?
Speaker 15 (28:03):
Well, you know, yeah, I think when you when you're
you know, I'm around a lot of Kansas fans, and
Kansas got obviously pretty bullied by those teams that left
Texas and Oklahoma. So I you know, I don't think
there's a ton of ill will seeing them leave the conference.
I think generally everybody's had a good time. You know,
(28:25):
I think you've got good teams out in Utah who
play a fun like physical, old school style of ball.
That's you know fans that are you know, like Kansas
State fans can probably really relate to. I feel like
there's a lot of that same sort of identity over there.
And and Kansas fans, I think that are excited that,
you know, they don't have teams that are going to
(28:45):
preenningally be in the top five in the conference all
the time, even though there are still going to be
good teams and a lot more depth of this time.
And it looks like Texas Tech is going to rise
up and be one of those teams now in the
near future. But yeah, I think everybody's had everybody's enjoyed it.
I think everybody. I think Kansas in particular, the big
things that they didn't move and their biggest rivals to move.
(29:07):
So that's the thing that matters at the end of
the day. They're still getting the Sunflower showdown, right.
Speaker 16 (29:11):
They lost out on.
Speaker 15 (29:12):
The border war between Miszoo in Kansas for years after
Missou moved to the SEC, but we got that back
this year. That's a huge deal. That's some Kansas fans
would argue that's bigger than in the Kansas Kansas State game.
So I think that's the big thing is that you know,
for the most part, the big twelve around them didn't
change too much. And you know, I think everybody's just
(29:35):
kind of excited for what this new era of college
football will look like. And you know, we'll see how
long it lasts.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
I know, you don't cover basketball. I guess your boss does,
Henry Greenstein Penstein, What what do you know about the
basketball program? And Bill self?
Speaker 15 (29:50):
Yeah, I hop over there and I'll cover, you know,
with Henry a little bit, depending on what's going on.
But yeah, this is uh, you know, the last couple
of years. Obviously, they came out number one in the
country and did not play like the number one team
in the country for most of those two years. And
so this is a team that is, in their eyes,
(30:10):
a little underrated. I think it's a very different team
stylistically than what Kansas had the last few years. It's
a lot more athletic. I think they're going to run
the floor.
Speaker 14 (30:20):
A lot more.
Speaker 15 (30:21):
They're probably not going to be a grade in the
half court, especially early on, but when you have a
player of the caliber of Darren Peterson, a lot of
magic can happen. And just from the early scrimmages, first
couple of games, all that that's shown of Darren Peterson.
I think Kansas fans are extremely excited for basketball season.
(30:43):
I think they are hoping that, you know, things around
Peterson and the team can kind of fix itself over
the course of the season and that they can have
a strong year and you know, not go out in
the first round just like they did last season.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
Is he taking heat, Bill Sell?
Speaker 4 (31:00):
Yeah?
Speaker 16 (31:01):
Oh no, I don't think so.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
Now.
Speaker 15 (31:03):
I mean, I know there are everybody on Twitter's got opinions.
I've seen things people complaining about, you know, I think
the style of offense that Kansas runs, But I think
more people are like, let's relax, everybody. They won a
national championship just a few seasons ago, right. This isn't
like some old coach who is completely out of his
(31:24):
depth in a new era and he just can't compete.
You know, this is they won the national championship in
twenty twenty two, the twenty fifty season, So you know,
this is a team that understands or this is a
coach who understands how to win this level, how to
win in this era, and can win at this program.
And so I think, you know, it's been a disappointing
two years for sure, and you know, people aren't happy
(31:46):
obviously when you come in with expectations of being the
number one team in the country back to back years
and then you have nothing to really show for it.
But I think the Jayhawks community really has you know,
still backs Bill self and is happy with him and
understands that, you know, those were more of anomalies last
year than than possibly really what Bill self is at
(32:09):
this point.
Speaker 16 (32:11):
Prediction, you know, I think the home team is going
to win.
Speaker 15 (32:16):
I think Arizona. I think it'll be a high scoring game.
I don't know quite how many points, who's each is
going to score and buy how much. But I think
Arizona being the home team, I think they've looked good.
I think the defensive improvement and I get just the
improvement that bringing in both coordinators have had it for Arizona.
I think that's just made a huge difference. And I
think I think Arizona will be the one that gets
(32:38):
the Bowl eligibility this season, and I think they get
to win on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (32:42):
Alrighty man, Okay, Well, thanks a bunch, Dave. I'll have
fun in Tucson. I know you Phoenix guys, don't usually
hear that from anybody.

go and see the campus. Send be around twusons and
you know, see everything. It's I enjoyed.
Speaker 16 (33:04):

Speaker 15 (33:07):
Yes, everybody around two soon it's it's all about the Wildcats.
Speaker 16 (33:09):

Speaker 2 (33:10):

Speaker 2 (37:50):
It's not that no.
Speaker 5 (37:51):
I thought last I got myself back into triple digits.
I've got eighteen points. So Steve's doubled me as a
through week and and I'm in nine hundred and ninety
first place.
Speaker 6 (38:03):
Hey, here we go back.
Speaker 4 (38:06):
The last week. So hey, man, I had a nice,
nice little three. It's been my first one in a
long time. So I'm right there, man. I'm coming at you, Steve.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
Okay, I'm coming at you. Ready for you?
Speaker 4 (38:15):
And since I kicked your ass last week, you got
to go first.
Speaker 2 (38:18):
Mark that work that dist okay, Let's I don't even
know where to go. Because you're scaring me.
Speaker 5 (38:26):
Okay, we know the game that we both have to
pick this week is BYU and Texas Tech. Texas Tech
is giving ten to those Cougars, which is kind of
shocking to me, being that surprising. Yeah, that's a big
spread for that game, it seems to me.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
Okay, so I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go for the
first I don't you know. I told you I didn't
worry about numbers, right, So I'm gonna go the biggest
number I have on the sheet of my sheet, Ohio
State minus twenty nine and a half overdue perdue on
the road too, So I'm gonna I really don't do these,
but I'm gonna go with that one, even though even
though the number is huge.
Speaker 5 (39:01):
Yeah, they've been, They've been really good against the spread,
and I just keep I'm afraid of jumping on their
bandwagon because the minute I do, it's gonna go.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
So that means you're not taking.
Speaker 5 (39:11):
Them just like my You know, Miami's only covered not
covered twice this season, and both times not only did
they not cover, they lost, and you I had them
both times.
Speaker 2 (39:19):
I remember last week. That's why you said, Miami, that's
a good one. Yeah, no, no, because you said Miami.
Speaker 5 (39:28):
All right, I'm I'm similarly in the in the Big ten.
But I'm taking Indiana. They're just they're just steamrolling people.
They're going out there, they're taking lunch money, they're taking
girlfriends about taking why with husbands. They're giving fourteen and
a half to Penn State. It's going to be a
terrible atmosphere Penn State. You know, I think it's the
first home game since they fired Franklin. Nobody's gonna be there.
(39:51):
It's a day game. It's just gonna be an awful atmosphere.
And Indiana's just taking zero prisoners. They're they're I mean,
they're just going in there and just taking everything from everybody.
Speaker 4 (40:02):
You don't think the game they no, I you know what,
I don't think they're a team that's going to trip
up give them.
Speaker 5 (40:09):
I just don't because they're playing with they're playing with
such a an attitude, you know, because they're not Ohio State,
and they're not Michigan, and they're not Notre Dame, and
they're not you know, Georgia or Alabama. They're Indiana, but
they're feeling like they're they're you know, I think they
feel like everywhere they go they get disrespected because I say,
you're Indiana and they're just not taking any prisoners.
Speaker 4 (40:31):
So I like the Indiana. Mine is fourteen and a
half at Penn State.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
Okay, I'm gonna go with my lock. At least this
lock Vandy wit a six and a half over Auburn.
They're at home. He's just lost, right, he just got
their coach fired Auburn. Auburn. Yeah, so oh that's not good.
Speaker 4 (40:51):
They did find the coach.
Speaker 2 (40:52):
They'll be next guy up.
Speaker 5 (40:54):
I'll just tell you one of the guys that I
listened to said, you know, said take the points in
this one for that reason that it's the kind of
you circle the wagons again. We've seen it here again,
you know, you circle the wagons and you and and
something like that. So they said, they said, either either
pass on it or take Auburn, and so good.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
I'm glad who said this. Uh No, the Bear Okay,
Chris Filica, I wonder if he's doing as well as Zion. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (41:22):
I know he's not, but I think he's doing He's
having a pretty good year.
Speaker 2 (41:24):
Okay, so then we won't worry about what the bear says,
but he's not the.
Speaker 5 (41:29):
One that's said to take Indiana. Okay, all right, my
lock will be Notre Dame. They're giving twenty six and
a half.
Speaker 4 (41:37):
The Navy.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
Just is a Navy under where they were undefeated.
Speaker 4 (41:42):
They lost.
Speaker 5 (41:43):
Yeah, but the just the disparity and talent and the
type of talent that these two teams have. If you remember,
I think it was a couple of years ago, Navy
was undefeated and Notre Dame beat him by forty Maybe
it was even last year, but just one of those games.
Speaker 6 (41:58):
Where it just sound was army last year, remember was.
Speaker 4 (42:00):
One of those.
Speaker 5 (42:01):
But still just yeah, they're you know, just the things
that that Notre Dame does Navy can't defend. And so
I'm taking I'm locking and giving twenty six and a
half against Navy.
Speaker 2 (42:13):
Okay, let's go to the pros for me. I'm gonna
go with Indye minus six and a half. Who are
they playing.
Speaker 6 (42:22):
Atlanta in Germany this game?
Speaker 2 (42:26):
Atlanta has screwed me over twice this year.
Speaker 5 (42:28):
That's the whole reason I'm not taking that game, Okay,
because Atlanta's screwed has hosed me about four times this year.
Speaker 4 (42:35):
Whether I've taken them or taken who they're playing.
Speaker 5 (42:38):
When they I had the Packers when they beat I
think they beat the Packers, right, you know, just stuff
like that, and I wanted to take the Colts. And
then I said, I'm gonna take the Colts this week.
And that's how their plans are. I'm not touching the Colts.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
Yeah, you know, so I'm yeah, I'm not touching like
because it's not a it's a hook beneath the.
Speaker 4 (42:55):
Right, underneath underneath. So yeah, again you're safe. I'm leaving
that one. Okay. I don't know how much, how much,
how much longer that's gonna be.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
No, No, it's not because.
Speaker 5 (43:08):
All right, okay, my first NFL game. I'm just sticking
with the Rams.
Speaker 14 (43:13):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (43:15):
I know they're in. They're in. Uh, they're they're at
the forty nine ers. Brock Perty is still not playing.
Uh what's his name? The quarterback? Mac Jones? No for
the for the Stafford, Matt Stafford. He's my he's been
my fantasy quarterback. He's been a stud. He's overcome the
kiss of death. I think the Rams are playing the
(43:38):
best football of in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (43:39):
Right now that I love that will come to the
kiss of Death, not this week, that's right.
Speaker 4 (43:47):
Yes, my son is going to be very unhappy that
I've done that.
Speaker 5 (43:50):
I you know, I'm not gonna let him come over
and watch the game because I got to be able
to root for for for the forty nine ers.
Speaker 2 (43:59):
So okay, okay, So now this is the game that's
gonna scare me. But I'm going with Seattle minus six
and a half.
Speaker 5 (44:06):
Well look at it this way, Steve. I'm taking the
Seahawks as well because I've activated Jacoby Brissett, so he's
gonna suck. Okay, Yeah, just now, when I said that,
something twinged in his neck.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
And yours, maybe I should switch my So I'm.
Speaker 4 (44:32):
I'm taking I'm taking. I'm also taking the Seahawks against
the Cardinals. I think that you know what happened? Was
it Monday night or Sunday night? The Coboys just just
the Cobboys are just They're pathetic. They are They're just pathetic.
Speaker 5 (44:50):
Brissette's not that good, you know, I mean, he's been
a journeyman quarterback. Is how bad Kyler Murray is?
Speaker 4 (44:57):
This is in Seattle, you know, this is in two
in Tucson, in Phoenix, I don't know, who I take,
but I think and Seattle I think is one of
the best team in football. Yeah, I think they're up
there with you know, they played.
Speaker 6 (45:10):
So it was a close game last time too. I
think the Seahawks wanted off a walk off field goal
for against Seattle Arizona.
Speaker 5 (45:17):
Yeah, but that was that was also in Phoenix. So
I like Seattle too. So we both cut the Seahawks. Okay,
okay with that.
Speaker 2 (45:25):
Yeah, I'm okay.
Speaker 4 (45:26):
We're gonna lose sleep over this.
Speaker 2 (45:28):
No Monday, we'll think you're I think your record on
games that we both had, I've got to go look
at it, and I think it's really bad. I've lost
a few I've lost. I could be in third place probably.
Speaker 5 (45:43):
All right, man, who who do you got in the
special Steve? It's b Yu and Texas Tech. B YU
was getting ten.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
I'm going with Texas Tech.
Speaker 4 (45:51):
Are you really?
Speaker 2 (45:52):
Yes?
Speaker 13 (45:52):
Why?
Speaker 14 (45:53):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (45:54):
I just think they're in Texas Tech, right, yeah.
Speaker 14 (45:56):
One.
Speaker 2 (45:56):
That's one reason I don't believe in by you just yet.
But I do believe in Texas Tech. The other quarterback.
Speaker 6 (46:04):
Yet, I think they should starter.
Speaker 2 (46:07):
They lost the back the backup guy Hammond or whatever
his name was. Texas Tech, please please, please, Well.
Speaker 5 (46:13):
I think Texas Tech is gonna win. I just don't
think they're gonna win by ten. I'm taking I'm taking
b YU. I just think I just think the toughness
the BYU has shown that they've you know that they
they you know, they've even what they did against Arizona,
just a methodical way they go about their business.
Speaker 4 (46:33):
I think Texas Tech wins. I think Texas TIK wins,
maybe even by touchdown. But I just think this, I
think ten points is just way too much for a
game where one team is ranked eighth, one team is
ranked ninth. BYU's undefeated Texas Tech has got one lost.
I think it's just a much closer game than ten.
Speaker 5 (46:48):
Now, again, the guys who said it's ten know way
more about this than I do, and so, but I
feel like ten is a lot.
Speaker 4 (46:56):
So I took BYU. It's eleven and a half. Now, wow?
Is it well them?
Speaker 14 (47:00):
That?
Speaker 5 (47:00):
Then that's the money is going towards Texas Tech. So
I guess I'm gonna have to change my noice. I'm staying.
I'm staying with BYU.
Speaker 2 (47:08):
But I think though not the sharps, but the regular
people see that because right, typically teams they bet teams
to cover, right, and Texas Tech is an obvious cover,
but it's not.
Speaker 4 (47:21):
Yeah does that make sense?
Speaker 2 (47:22):
Yeah, because most people bet to cover and it just
it doesn't always happen.
Speaker 4 (47:26):
Look, I just hope it's a good game. It's a
it's first thing in the morning, so.
Speaker 2 (47:30):
We'll be here.
Speaker 3 (47:31):
Yeah, yeah, we're gonna be here when it starts. It's
exciting though, I mean Texas Tech's defense. I mean, you
think about that Utah game, right, and it's like, I
think that's kind of like a good benchmark for both
of those teams. And it's like b Yu played Utah close,
whereas Texas Tech.
Speaker 4 (47:46):
Just blew them out of the water.
Speaker 6 (47:47):
So so yeah, it's gonna be an interesting one.
Speaker 5 (47:50):
I mean, I just hope this freshman quarterback would be
why you can keep his you know stuff together and
just play a good game. I'm not asking you for
a lot other than you know, hang within double digits.
Speaker 4 (48:00):
Right, that's reasonable.
Speaker 2 (48:02):
Yeah, Okay, we got about four minutes, three.
Speaker 4 (48:04):
Minutes, So what what do you think about? What do
you think tonight? That's thirty three and a half. You
tak you don't think you think Arizona.
Speaker 2 (48:11):
Covers that I'm hoping to stay awake during the game.
It's tough. It's tough sometimes, you know, you well, you
have to, Yeah, you have to. No, I wouldn't pay
attention to this. Then who do they play after this?
They don't play UCLA right away.
Speaker 4 (48:25):
They've got another game.
Speaker 5 (48:28):
Tuesday, Tuesday, and then they go to and then they
go and U c l A up and and and
at the.
Speaker 2 (48:34):
The Clippers you get, you know, get the big game
out of the way. Play play some guys in the
next two games. U c l A will be better
than what we think. Can They have the kids from
New Meaxico to the guard Dent Uh, they're pretty good.
Who knows what the coach is gonna do? What's his name? Yeah, yeah,
Nick Croton. I don't like I would hate playing for
(48:55):
that guy. I don't like him. I don't like him
even a little bit. And not because he's UCLA. Just
I have seen what he does. I'm up close, you
know in PAC TWEF tournaments and stuff, and you know,
along the bench and stuff, and I'm just like, he's
just a bad guy. One thing I like is that
he dresses up the suit. Yeah, he's got the suit
on and stuff. But you know, he's just he's just
(49:17):
he's just a bad guy.
Speaker 5 (49:18):
And if i'm if I'm a parent of a player
that plays for him, I'm upset.
Speaker 3 (49:23):
Oh yeah, you know, yeah, whether they were I mean
he I don't know who they played in their first game.
I know it was close, but he just ripped his
team apart in the in the postgame presser.
Speaker 5 (49:32):
Yeah, so no, it's uh and yeah, and you know whatever,
you know, whatever those guys do and why whyever they
played for him, it's fine, but none of my business.
Speaker 4 (49:42):
But man, yeah, you know makes it tough.
Speaker 6 (49:45):
Well, I mean it's just like you're talking like it's
a guy.
Speaker 3 (49:47):
That I'm sure he speaks differently to them behind closed doors,
and maybe he does, like maybe he does, maybe he doesn't.
But it's like you're just you're just like like you're
not even like offering constructive criticism, you know what I mean.
Speaker 4 (50:00):
Well, he's demeaning. I've seen I've seen him be very
demeaning to his player, and I don't know how players
play for you when you're that.
Speaker 6 (50:07):
Yeah, it makes it tough for sure. I mean you
don't want to We gotta go already yep.
Speaker 2 (50:11):
Oh well okay, you're going to go get some heat
real quickly and then go yeah, okay, all right, we'll say, hey,
you're here next week. You look with the show tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (50:20):
No, I'm not here next week, although if I might,
I'll be at the airport. If we can call in
my picks on the three o'clock hour or something, Okay,
maybe we can do something like that.
Speaker 2 (50:28):
Let's gool. We should have listened to us tomorrow at
ten o'clock. Yes, with the huddle, Okay,
