Speaker 1 (00:05):

New England, mixing it up with top chefs, jumping behind
the line of the hottest restaurants, and giving you the
inside scoop on where to whine, dine, and spend your time.
So get ready, it's Food for Thought giving you something
to chew on.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Hi, everybody, welcome into Food for Thought. Billy Costa here,
and I gotta tell you, aj this includes you, the
producer of this program. You got to buckle up for
this week's episode. Okay, go, I mean, we have more
guests booked for one show than I think we've ever
had before. And the good news is we're going to
take everybody listening to Peetown to Provincetown. You got to remember,
(00:43):
we're only halfway through the season basically. I mean, I
know we're halfway through August, but the season goes through September.
September is my favorite favorite month. So we're going to
talk to a lot of different people who are waiting
for us to talk to them in Peetown. As we speak.
But in the meantime, we are co anchored this week
on Food for Thought by my good friend Mike Rockett.
(01:05):
Good to see you, Mike, to see you. Mike, of
course the owner operator of the Salem Waterfront Hotel, newly renovated,
as evidenced on Dining Playwork last Saturday.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
You did such a fabulous jo The.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Hotel looks phenomenal and you've got a big anniversary coming up.
We'll talk about that in a couple of seconds. Also
with us is Macy and Macy. You have been on
the show, so welcome back to Food for Thought.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
You.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Mason and Macy works for Ocean Haven's, which well basically
is Chuck and an Lagasy and Company, and they own
Charlestown Marina where I docked my boat, by the way,
number one marina in the nation. I'm not making a
big deal about it, but also happen to own the
Peatown Marina in Provincetown. And again we'll be taking you
(01:51):
to Provincetown in just a couple of minutes. You're going
to learn everything you need to know about Peetown.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
But in the.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Meantime, Mike, you and I went to Petown a couple
of weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Now be nice. Okay, the weather was perfect. Actually, the
boat ride over was a lot faster than I think
we thought.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
Yes, so flat, and what do we get to see
out there for the first time?
Speaker 2 (02:13):
What did Michelle finally get to see?
Speaker 3 (02:14):
We got the whales?
Speaker 2 (02:15):
We got a pot of five whales.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Yeah, he j Have you ever seen the whales?
Speaker 5 (02:19):
No?
Speaker 3 (02:19):
I haven't.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
It's amazing. So yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
We were headed to Petown on my boat and as
we were getting closer to Ptown, I looked off to
my left.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Or stop I did? I did?
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Okay again, and we noticed there was action.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
There were.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Whale watching boats out there and there was zigzagging. So
we said, hey, let's shoot over. There could be some
action over there. We went and sure enough, pods of
whales were popping out and breaching and it was cool.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Awesome. They're so big. It's just so awesome.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
Don't want Yeah, and we'll get back to pe Town.
But Salem Waterfront Hotel. Mike, you've got a big anniversary
coming up.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
I just got the evite. Yeah, on the twenty sixth,
Are you going.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
I'm absolutely going. And it's the twenty year anniversary, but
it's also the grand real opening of the new hotel.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
It's yeah, that's that's what they're calling at the reopening.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
Because it twenty years, it doesn't seem like a long time,
but it is. The furniture just gets beat up, and
we just decided to go ahead and shout out as
a little project that every room just got renovated.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
We had bridal suite. So it came out tremendous.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
We have a couple of a few things left to do,
but we'll get them done this winter time.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
But I'm very, very happy with the work.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Well, I noticed the bridal suite as evidenced on dining
playbook Lass Saturday On Nesson.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
But it's got its own bar and everything.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
Yeah, it came out beautiful. It's yeah, it's they're already
fighting over it, which is what we wanted.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Oh absolutely, yeah, And we'll talk more about Salem Waterfront Hotel.
But Macy, we're coming up on the Labor Day weekend
and there will be fireworks over the harbor, right.
Speaker 6 (03:49):
There will be fireworks over the harbor. This is actually
the tenth year of their Illuminate the Harbor Fireworks celebration.
It's put on every year Boston Harbor. Now meet Boston,
the City of Boston. This year, it's happening on the
twenty ninth, which is a Thursday. They'll probably start around
eight thirty. You want the sun to go down, be
nice and dark. But right beforehand is there going to
be live music in that Christopher Columbus Park in the
(04:11):
North End, so get the party started. Around seven, some
Berkeley students will be jamming out there. And then, yeah,
the fireworks are over the harbor, so the waterfront's going
to be the place to be. There's plenty of harbor walk.
Oh yeah, Ocean Haven's are marinas. We'll have slips available,
watch the fireworks from the comfort of your boat, or
come hang out on the piers with us.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
And it's good that we're mentioning the fireworks because even
around the fourth of July, there's the earlier fireworks that
happened before the fourth on the s RAI Nod and
a lot of people forget. I think that's called the
Harbor Fest fireworks or something that go off. So this
would be Thursday night before Labor Day weekend.
Speaker 6 (04:45):
Thursday night before Labor Day, the twenty ninth.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
And plenty of time to enjoy the harbor. You've got
a lot of things going on all the time there, right.
Speaker 6 (04:51):
Oh yeah, it's always a fun time.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Is Billy co host? And that day you guys rig
them in on that is I think you should to
Mike on the boat.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
Yeah, well me boss, I mean, you guys are the
premier sponsor, right yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
When you guys shelled out most of the dove for
the fireworky, Meat.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Boston is involved in the pre Labor Day fireworks and
as it happens, Yeah, Jenny and I have another TV
show on ness and called Meat Boston because we are
partnered with Meat Boston, which, by the way, a lot
of people don't know, used to be the Office of
Travel and Tourism. Pat Muskratolo for years was the president
of the Travel and Tourism Office. But now it's called
(05:27):
Meet Boston and they're doing some great things, not only
throughout the city. A lot going on on East Boston
side of the Harbor, but throughout the Harbor. Meat Boston
is very involved with all that as well. Mike, Halloween
is that happening Wicked Night.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Yes it is. You're gonna have to fight with the
witch this.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Year to say, okay, we need to talk about what
happened last year. Okay, I've been doing Wicked Night at
the Salem Waterfront Hotel for years, Right, and I get together,
we have a ball, we have a costume contest.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Do you get dressed up? DJ?
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Of course.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Last year I walked in and there was a head
banging band, and then some witch was yelling at me,
telling me she was hosting the night, and I'm like,
I don't mean a witch as in describing this was
a sale list.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
She was literally a witch.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
I saw her on America. It's got talent.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Well she didn't have any talent.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
That's what she got the hook before she even opened
her mouth. But anyway, she says, I'm hosting us. No
you're not, you're leaving.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
You're getting out of here.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
And then you threw the bandash, which is everybody was happier.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Yeah, and then we had a great time.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
So Wicked Night happens when.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
October twenty six.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Okay, so it's the Saturday night of that weekend's right
before Hallowing. And if you come to Wicked Night, you'll
get to look at the brand new hotels.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Yeah, yep, yep.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
So it's a it's a grotto, it's an immersive experience
of pre birth, birth, after birth, after life. Yeah, it's
gonna be all set up in different rooms in the hotel,
so it should be pretty interesting.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
There's always some good.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
Characters and your your beautiful daughter Margaret contacted me recently
and said, these tickets are going to go fast. How
do people get tickets now?
Speaker 4 (06:59):
Just go right on the www. Salewaterfront dot com.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
That's cute that you still say the WW.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
I still have to.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
I can't you know otherwise the problem is, truthfully, with
the websites. If you're going to a hotel and be
with a marina, you literally type it in and you
will say sale on Waterfront.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
It's not that site, Okay, So you got to get
your tickets because it sells out every year. We got
to take our first break. When we come back, we
will start taking you on our trip to Peetown and
that's coming up next than buck.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
You're listening to Food for Thought brought to you by
the Box Center and Sale and Waterfront Hotel and Speeds.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Hey, folks, welcome back to Food for Thought again. Billy
Costa here and I've got my rocket from the Salem
Waterfront Hotel as a co anchor this week, as well
as Macy from Ocean Haven's co anchoring the show, and
it So Happens Ocean Haven's Hi Chuck High ann own
and operate a bunch of different marinas all over New
England up to and including Provincetown Marina. And let's take
(08:00):
you to Pete Town. Right now, we've got Mike of
the general manager of the Provincetown Marina.
Speaker 7 (08:05):
Micah, you there, I'm here, Billy, how are you?
Speaker 2 (08:08):
I'm fine.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
First and foremost, Mike, I want to thank you. We
spent our vacation a couple of weeks ago at Provincetown Marina.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Ay, I got to compliment you.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
You have an incredible staff there at Provincetown Marina.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (08:23):
This staff really makes it the experience that it is here.
They we like to say, they drink the kool aid
and we live for it day and day out. We
only get a short season, so we like to make
the most of it.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
And they're all very friendly, they're all very knowledgeable, and
it goes without saying, Mike, the marina is beautiful.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
Thank you.
Speaker 7 (08:42):
Yeah. One of the things that Chuck Lagassi, our owner,
said to me at the beginning of the season was
how much of a privilege it is to be out here,
and we want to make sure we have pride in
the property. And that's you know, how we continue to
operate it in the facilities. And as someone who's been
too many marinas and had to thrown out many pairs
(09:05):
of flip flops after visiting the facilities, yeah, it's really
nice to be associated with such beautiful property.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
You had something really cool while you have something really
cool on the upper deck. As you walk up the
ramps to head into town.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
You saw this.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Mic, I've got Mike Rockett here. He took the trip
over to p Town with us. Mike sayhead to Mike.
Speaker 7 (09:23):
Hey know Mike, Hey Mike, good see good to hear you.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
So you have this space at the top of the ramps.
It's kind of an outdoor lounge. You have two big
flat screens. And we were there during the Olympic Games.
So after you go out to dinner, have some fun
in town, we'd come back to the docks at night
to sit there and get a glass of wine and
watch the games.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
That's a cool spot. Whose idea was that.
Speaker 7 (09:42):
Mike, Yeah, that was checking in when they first You know,
we're planning out the marina and restoring it. It's important
for them to sort of have an area where your
borders can gather, and especially after a long day, you
kind of want to get your feet on land little bit.
So yeah, it's a perfect area to hang out. And
(10:04):
we were really excited about the Olympics this year, and
I started talking about it in February and just making
that Olympic Central for a couple of weeks we had
and you.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
Had the fire pits too. So you sit there, you
got the fire pits going on, You're watching the Olympics.
You know what just hit me, Mike. Mike Rocket, sitting
here in the studio also owns besides the hotel and Salem,
he owns Pickering Wharf Marina. So you're both marina guys,
and it just hit me, Mike. You have the same
exact situation. You've got the pub patio where people can
sit and hang out and watch stuff. And it's wow, Yeah,
(10:35):
we're going to actually.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
On the marina.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
We're building a little uh it's gonna be. We had
a tent, but we're actually gonna make it a full
time structure.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
Oh really Yeah, yeah, you had a beer garden. Yeah,
a couple of summers ago.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
The governor took care of that.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
Yeah, single handedly put the cow wash on it.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
She did a good job with it. Wow. Really yeah?
Oh boy?
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Okay, so we move on. So, Mike, how long have
you been in pe Town?
Speaker 7 (11:03):
This is my second season, Billy I last season was
my inaugural breaking in and yeah, now I'm rolling through
my second season feeling like like quite the local here.
The town really takes you in and absorbs you. So
it's it's great to be a part of the community.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Well, since you're feeling like quite the local after two
seasons there, why don't you give us and give our
listeners some of your favorite spots and favorite things about
pe Town? Ready?
Speaker 7 (11:32):
Go, all right? Favorite spots it's a toss up. I
love nine Rider at the base of our pier and
the pasta burrow there. He does an amazing job sALS
If you're looking for outdoor seating, nothing beats Salves and seafood,
you know, you hit up the Lobsterpot if you're in town.
It's iconic and they do a great job over there.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
You know, it's funny you mentioned well, you mentioned nine Rider,
and we're going to have Andrew, the head bartender there
from nine. He's going to be calling into the show
in a couple of minutes. But you also mentioned Sales Place,
and Michelle and I on your say so, walked down
to sALS Place. The first time we went, we couldn't
get in. The second time, we went very early and
(12:14):
we lucked out. We had tied us our dog with
us and we got a table outside and I got
to meet Chevron, the owner, and the plan was to
have chavn on, but I left her a couple of
voicemail and she didn't get back to me.
Speaker 7 (12:27):
But that's okay, Sala, give me tough to peg down
in August.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
Yeah, Well, sALS Place was an amazing restaurant and the
food was outstanding. And what I love about it is
there's no sign. You walk down there, you can only
tell it sALS because you heard so much about it.
And there's a crowd outside the building. It looks like
a house, and there's a crowd gathering and these are
all people hoping that they can get a table at
(12:52):
sALS Place, And we lucked out that second night. The
service was impeccable, the food was impeccable. Give me a
couple of other favorite things about Peeton or you, Mike.
Speaker 7 (13:02):
I love going to the library is in the great
little experience. They have the schooner up there. Of course,
riding bikes out here is great and wildlife and we've
had whales come right up to the breakwater, so it
doesn't take much to see quite a bit of wildlife
out here.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
You know what's funny, Mike, We have whale in Boston
Harbor this week. It's been there for by the Watch
and that billy it keeps splashing out.
Speaker 7 (13:28):
Titus and all of our four legged friends come to visit,
so we are very dog friendly down here.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
Well, I got to tell you before I even came
to Peetown, I saw a survey or report naming Peetown
the most dog friendly place on all of Cape Cod.
And when you bring a dog, and you were there, Mike,
and we brought Titus. No matter where you go, they
just are so welcoming to your dog. Titus came to
every meal with us.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
He also it was also good for him because it's
probably the most social he's ever been.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
Yeah, because he's a rescue, he still gets nervous around
people sometimes.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
You know what freaked him out.
Speaker 4 (14:01):
Did you finally fix the boat the electricity? I thank
god Mike was there for plugging it in because you
had no idea what you were doing. Well, it was
seriously was it was like, okay, seriously, I had never
used like a dog in a football save.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
Me on this. I never used the bow plug ins
on the boat. So yeah, it's always used.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
To plugging in the back.
Speaker 7 (14:22):
So we had to use the secondary plug. But we
got to figure it out. Uh yeah, jump thump board
and when we got you going.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Well, speaking of boating, Mike and the marina, how's business
been this summer in terms of boating?
Speaker 7 (14:33):
I mean, you can't ask You couldn't have asked for
a better July, and we're off to a great start
here in August. We've had some beautiful weather. It looks
like or Nesto mite. Uh well a little bit.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
Yeah, your weekend looks perfect.
Speaker 7 (14:48):
Yeah, yeah, it looks it looks like we're in for
another great week. So a couple more weeks of it,
and we've considered ourselves very lucky, especially after last season
all the rain we.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Had every weekend.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
Yeah, every week cats, Well, I know it's go ahead.
Speaker 7 (15:02):
Mike, going and going all around town. You hear all
the business owners talking about how how appreciative they've been
on the weather, like we have a choice in the matter.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
But well, I got to tell you.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
I always tell people September and even October are my
favorite boating months of the season. So I'm sure you
take reservations and book out slips well into October, right, Mike.
Speaker 7 (15:23):
Absolutely, We're open till October fifteenth officially, and hopefully we'll
have some good tuna fishing going on late into the season,
so we'll we'll have a lot of tuna boats and
things here as well.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
So, Mike, we ought to get back there because you
had a lot of fun in Pee Town while we're
there a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
I had a great time. I just want you know
I got hit on before Billy. That's all I want
you to know. The famous I'm.
Speaker 7 (15:47):
Sure Titus was the one.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
I loved. Titus.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
It's always the dog.
Speaker 8 (15:51):
You know.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Those beach towels are awesome.
Speaker 4 (15:54):
I think actually, for those fire pits up there, you
guys should actually get some blankets.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
Oh good ones, sell them Banket.
Speaker 7 (16:03):
I'm always looking looking for new ideas, so yeah, I'm
always looking for him.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
They they we do.
Speaker 4 (16:09):
We do them at the hotel. They once they put
them on, they just don't want to buy him.
Speaker 7 (16:13):
Mike, I have a feeling Ann's going to be having
me looking for blankets.
Speaker 5 (16:17):
That's a great idea.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
Well, I am a feeling Ann's probably listening right now.
So and we need some blankets for the lounge up
at the top of the marina. Uh And Mike, Mike
rocket here just made me think of some other place
we love when we go to Peetown Aquaba.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
Oh my god, that place is awesome. You go there much, Mike.
Speaker 7 (16:33):
I you know what I don't get too. It's funny
you should mention that I just met the owner at
the bank the other day and we were talking about
how we haven't seen each other, and it's probably assuming
because we're both so busy this time of year. Unfortunately,
I don't get to make it over there very often,
so but I do send lots of customers over there
because it's a short walk and a beautiful view from
(16:54):
from the patio with.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
The fish and that little that little bomb shot. That
place is off.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
Just grab and go. You sit outside of the Aqua bar.
They've got a bar. You get some fresh drinks that
I love it.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
There for some people to get table service because you
know they like it.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
Well, yeah, one of the martenders's hitting on Mike. But okay,
we got to take a break. Mike, we got to
let you go. But where can people go if they
want to book slips now?
Speaker 7 (17:19):
Petowlmarina dot com taking a reservations October fifteenth, and yeah, and.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
Make sure your cords dry. Make sure your cord's dry.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
And by the way, the website is beautiful. Go there
even if you're not taking the boat there. But we
got to take a break. Thank you, Mike.
Speaker 7 (17:35):
Thanks Billy. We'll see you in Titus again soon.
Speaker 3 (17:37):
You got it. And when we come back, we're going
to have Macy and Mike share a few of their
favorite places to go here. Mike, your favorite place is
on the north shore and Macy yours your favorite places
to go to eat around the harbor that's up next thing.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
By you're listening to Food for Thought, brought to you
by the Box Center and Sailing Waterfront Hotel in sweets.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
Hey, everybody, welcome back to Food for Thought. Mike Rockett
is here co boasting ads. It's Macy from Ocean Haven's
and they've got a big rendezvous happening at the pe
Town Marina this weekend, in fact, for Bosn's, which is
a big boat manufacturer. So we get a lot of
people leaving Charlestown Marina as we speak, or coming home
from pe Town Marina. So that's going on. But Mike,
(18:18):
I need to have you, as the owner of the
Salem Waterfront Hotel, a long time resident of the North Shore, Marblehead, Massachusetts,
give me your three favorite places to go out and eat.
This is food for thoughts.
Speaker 4 (18:31):
Yeah, if I'm actually on a boat, it's you know,
Finns is one of my favorites. But the place we
always stop and uh, Manchester Callus is always fun. Great spot.
It's you know and Bravo Bravo. Yeah, those are two
great spots. Okay, and then you know it's it's iconic,
but it's the mile marker.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
In Gloucester was the other the other day with the kids,
it was, oh my god.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
And they always have live bands right right weekends.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
It's a it's a really fun spot.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
And it's right at Cap Marina.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Yeah, it's tough time. It's tough to get a spot.
Speaker 4 (19:03):
Sometimes you get a call ahead but it's fun. It's
fun driving through the bridge because there's always somebody smokes
the bridge in Gloucester, it's always fun to wash.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
Well it's a tiny bridge.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
Oh yeah, and you know, the bigger the boat, the
faster you have to go through it. Yeah, you're in that.
Speaker 4 (19:18):
You get that thirteen footer in front, and you're like, listen,
I got forty feet, I.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
Got a gum this.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
Yeah it's the blinding bridge.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
Oh yeah, Okay, Macy, your favorite places you work in
Boston Harbor with ocean havens around the harbor, give us
three great places this summer.
Speaker 6 (19:33):
I've been really loving Peer six right in Charles John Marina.
They have a great burger I really can't beat it.
And the views of the Boston Skyline run across the harbor.
I mean, talk about dinner and a view there. They
have got great drinks too, my favorite pain killer, Oh
there it yeah you go, or a quick ride across
the harbor. The tall Ship is always a fun time.
And the real House it's an oyster bar. But I've
(19:55):
got to tell you they have incredible pizza. You wouldn't
always expect it from an ois. Yeah, but it is
so good.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
And if you haven't experienced the tall ship yet. You
really got to get over to the East Boston side
of Boston Harbor. I'll give you another tip from Peer six.
You got the clam and corn chowder. Corn chowder is
to dive for Okay, the show is all about Peetown.
Why not if you haven't been to Petown. The one
thing I haven't even mentioned, and I'll mention it again
(20:23):
later in the show. Fairies are constantly leaving Boston Harbor
taking you directly to Petetown and you get there in
an hour and a half stay and they.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Never got canceled like the ones in Highenas.
Speaker 3 (20:34):
Never get canceled. Okay, we got to take a break.
When we come back, we'll take you all, all of
you listening, will take you back to Peetown. This time
we're going to talk to a very very gifted bartender
at a place called nine Rider in Petown. We'll do
that right after the break.
Speaker 1 (20:52):
You're listening to Food for Thought, brought to you by
the Box Center and Stale in Waterfront Hotel in sweets Hey.
Speaker 3 (20:58):
Everybody, welcome back to Food for again. It's all about
pete Town, and why not. Peetown is a magical place.
And it's only a one and a half hour ferry
ride out of Boston. It's actually faster to take a
ferry than it is to drive to Peetown. And we're
going to take you back to pe Town right now,
because I met Andrew while I was down there on vacation.
(21:19):
Andrew is the bartender at nine Rider, which is right
at the mouth of Peetown Marina. And Andrew, are you there?
Speaker 5 (21:27):
I am here, How are you?
Speaker 3 (21:29):
I'm fine now, Andrew, I'm gonna be delicate here. Okay. Firstly,
I walked in and you made one of the best
cosmos I've ever had. The only one I've ever had
that's better was made for me by Mike Rocket, who's
sitting right next to me in the studio.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
He has to say that.
Speaker 3 (21:48):
By the way, no, Mike, if I'm coming to Mike's house,
he'll actually pre make them and put them in the freezer.
So when I walk into the house, there they are.
So Andrew, you've got a local history because you used
to work at Ashmont Grill, right.
Speaker 5 (22:04):
I did, eighteen years. Eighteen years. You have to buy
a manager.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
There, and to my knowledge, Ashmon Grill is still there,
right it's a chef Douglas, Christopher Douglas.
Speaker 5 (22:14):
Actually we closed about a year and a half ago, okay,
and the business has been sold. But we had a
great run. It was eighteen years and I'm very proud
of that. So it's cool.
Speaker 3 (22:23):
So was Provincetown your next stop after Ashmont Grell.
Speaker 5 (22:28):
I've been coming down here for over forty years off
and on, and I've worked at a few places when
I had some time, and you know, I just love
it down Yeah, Okay, the play work at the boats.
I does the work at the Boat Slip, which is great.
It's the big tea dance.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
Oh yeah, okay, I've been to the boat Slip. I
just want to get that out there. Well. No, years ago,
we broadcasted the Morning Show from Provincetown and one of
the things we did is we kind of went over
to the Boat Slip.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
We had a ball.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
By the way.
Speaker 2 (22:59):
It's a lot of fun.
Speaker 8 (23:00):
There, right, it's a blast.
Speaker 3 (23:02):
Yeah. So let's talk about Nine Rider. It's right at
the mouth of Provincetown Marina. But how long has Nine
Rider been there?
Speaker 5 (23:12):
Francis has owned it for about fourteen years. He was
the original chef of sALS salth Is down the East End.
Francis is like a local legend here. He's a chef owner.
He's I don't know. Did you go see him in
the back? Did you introduce yourself.
Speaker 8 (23:27):
With me there?
Speaker 3 (23:28):
No, he did come out while we were sitting at
the bar. I was actually at the bar with Chuck,
who well owns and operates Province down Marina down there,
and so we had a drink and then Francis came
out and said hello.
Speaker 5 (23:40):
Yeah, Francis eighty three years old, still behind the line
six nights a week. Wow, he's a local legend. He's unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (23:47):
Okay, so your cosmo was phenomenal. I wasn't able to
stay for the meal. He and Chuck and his friend
Martin were staying for dinner. So walk us through the menu.
One of the highlights. What should we love at nine Rider.
Speaker 5 (24:00):
Well, everything is homemade. Everything is made from scratch. His
sauce is unbelievable. They piled the veal. They they make
everything daily, fresh fish off the pier. His fish dishes
are unbelievable. He has something called the brodetto. It has
every type of fish in it over a spaghetti and
(24:22):
his Marinara sauce.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
It's just it's die for.
Speaker 5 (24:26):
It's really unbelievable. Is the eighteen ours veal chopped blown
in his totlets, his chicken ponds. I mean, it's all
fantastic and it's made with love, and it's his recipes
from back of sALS And yeah, he's quite amazing.
Speaker 3 (24:44):
It's funny because a couple of minutes ago on the
show we were talking about sALS Place. I made it
down there for dinner one night. I met Savonne and uh,
you know, we tried to get her on the show,
but I think she was all wrapped up this morning.
Speaker 2 (24:56):
But yes, there, did you eat that?
Speaker 3 (24:59):
We had dinner?
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Would you eat? Okay?
Speaker 3 (25:02):
I had? She had a phenomenal Haliba dish and she's
got decks outside which are literally right in the sand.
And that's a cozy place and what a great menu
and the food and the service were spectacular. So shout
out to Chevron Sal's Place, a place you really should
check out if you're heading to Pete Town. But back
to nine Rider, how about the standout dessert?
Speaker 5 (25:24):
Andrew Well, Susan is his side in there on the
line and she makes an amazing chocolate Moose Real expresso
and it's it's screamy, it's delicious. It's what a chocolate
should be.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
And do you guys do lunch too? I don't think so, right.
Speaker 5 (25:44):
No, no lunch. We open up. The bar opens up
at five point thirty. You can come and we only
have a small bar, nine seats, as you well know. Yeah,
and Dinna starts at six. It's a it's a hidden gym.
I gotta tell you. We have handwritten doo. We still
have dial up modem.
Speaker 3 (26:00):
I mean, where do you even find a dial up motor?
Speaker 5 (26:07):
We got it.
Speaker 4 (26:07):
We have it in the largest parking lot in Pete
Town right there. Oh yeah, I mean get right off
the boat or you get there. It's you never have
a problem getting there where it's okay, amazing.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
Did you eat there?
Speaker 3 (26:23):
I didn't stay for I had some of the bread,
but I just I just finished dinner at sales place.
And he didn't have the desert, said Chuck, I'll meet
you back there for a drink and then Michelle and
back to the boat. And well, I walked them back
to the boat and then I came back and had
a quick tri bill.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
He always pretends nothing like dessert and he eats the
whole thing.
Speaker 5 (26:42):
Well, he only wanted one Cosmo, but I got him
to have two.
Speaker 3 (26:47):
Yeah, he's.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
He's such a liar about it. I'll just have one.
Speaker 3 (26:52):
If I had to give you one half half if yeah,
I got a yeah, if I had to give you
one tip on the Cosmo. Okay, Andrew, the ice chips
around the rim. I don't want to make a big deal.
Mike Rocket sitting here. He gives me the ice chips
around the rim. So there we go, Andrew, we gotta
go to break because next we're going to talk about
(27:14):
Radu from the Chamber of Commerce down in pe Town. So, Andrew,
thank you so much for joining the show. We'll take
a break and we'll be right back.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
You're listening to Food for Thought, brought to you by
the Box Center and Salem Waterfront Hotel in swees Hey.
Speaker 3 (27:28):
Everybody, welcome back to Food for Thought. Billy Costa here,
I am co anchored with Mike Rocket. The Salem Waterfront
Hotel's got a big anniversary coming up, twentieth yenny years.
Speaker 2 (27:38):
God, you know what.
Speaker 3 (27:40):
A little later in the show, I want you to
talk about the beginnings of the Salem Waterfront hotel. Didn't
you kind of build it with your bare hands?
Speaker 4 (27:47):
I built it left and I had a family member
that was going to run it that decided day two
they weren't going to run it.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
I was in Florida, and I flew back and fired
everybody and ran the place.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
And there it is, the beautiful Salem Waterfront Hotel, newly
ran with the grand opening coming up, and Macy is
also co anchoring the show. Macy is from Ocean Haven's
which controls and owns and operates several marinas all over
New England up to and included the new Edition Portland, Maine,
and also East Boston Boston Shipyard Marina. We'll talk more
(28:17):
with Macy about things coming up around Boston Harbor, but
right now we take everybody back to Petown and we
have none other than Radu from the Chamber of Commerce
in Peedetown, Rod do go. How are you doing?
Speaker 8 (28:30):
Doing very well? Billy? Thank you for having me on
your show.
Speaker 3 (28:33):
So I guess overall how things going in Peetown Chamber
of Commerce.
Speaker 8 (28:39):
Things are going very well. We're having a very good
summer so far. I can't believe it's already August. Time
flies when you're.
Speaker 9 (28:48):
Having a good time in pe Town, I guess, and
you know that we are coming up to Carnival Week
in Provincetown on Thursday.
Speaker 8 (28:58):
We'll have our pick parade hit a twenty second and yeah,
Renaissance and Revolution is the theme this year, and we
know that everyone will have a great time.
Speaker 3 (29:10):
Well for sake of people listening, RADU who have not
experienced Carnival in p Town, which happens starting next Thursday
or this coming Thursday, walk us through what happens, what's
it like?
Speaker 8 (29:21):
So we will have a series of events and parties
all throughout Provincetown and all of that culminates with the
with the Carnival Parade on Thursday, where we'll have over
fifty floats that have signed up this year for the
(29:42):
for the Carnival Parade. I know it's remarkable and that
will start at three pm.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
So it's like the Thanksgiving Day Parade in p Town exactly.
It's kind of a different flair.
Speaker 5 (29:56):
I mean, yeah, Carnival is.
Speaker 8 (29:58):
Our is our a pride event, if you will, we
don't have it in June. We also have a pride
of it in June, but Carnival is a big pride
event in August, which is like the main event of
the year, and you know, a lot of a lot
of good momentum around that. You know, this year twenty
twenty four is you know, Mark's twenty twenty years of
(30:21):
gay marriage in the state of Massachusetts. Yeah, and it's
it's like a big year for celebrations for us here
in province down.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
So rader in terms of the Chamber of Commerce on
a daily basis, So what are the general priorities for
you folks and what you what you're constantly working on
on a day to day.
Speaker 8 (30:41):
We we run and operate the only tourist visitor center
that is open year round in Provincetown. We you know,
we welcome you know, anywhere between you know, fifty and
sixty thousand visitors that you know cross our door on
(31:01):
an annual basis, and we promote our members out of
that visitor center. But of course, as the Chamber of Commerce,
we focus on everything business and economic development related from uh,
you know, from workforce housing issues to workforce visas to
public the restrooms, believe it or not, everything that has
(31:25):
to do with business, economic development and hospitality. So yeah,
we're keeping busits here. The chamber.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
Hey, what's the winter like in Peetown?
Speaker 8 (31:36):
You know, September, October going into November is my favorite
time of year, to be honest. You know, winters you
know past past January or January, February, Uh, they tend
to be a little quiet. It's the season of solitude
and reflection as we call it. I love winters on
the Cape. I love winters in Provincetown. We still have
(31:58):
quite a few events opening in town and quite a
few restaurants and eateries that stay open throughout the winter too.
So we have a pretty vibrant, uh full, you know,
year round community in Provincetown. And yeah, it's you know
February in January, can you know, tend to be a
(32:20):
little quiet, but there's there's plenty of things happening and
going on.
Speaker 3 (32:24):
Do a lot of the restaurants stay open?
Speaker 8 (32:28):
Quite a few stay open. I would say maybe twenty
twenty five percent of our restaurants stay open through the winter,
But we do have a pretty good selection in the
in the shoulder season.
Speaker 2 (32:41):
Do they do they work together in all tonate days?
Speaker 4 (32:43):
I know they do that up like ugar Bush, so
one place is open on Monday and none the places
open on a Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
Yeah, kind of, they kind of.
Speaker 4 (32:51):
Work with each other so that they know, hey, listen,
staff can go eat here on Tuesday, staff can go eat.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
Here on Thursday.
Speaker 3 (32:57):
That's a good question, Rod, do what about that?
Speaker 8 (33:00):
Yeah, No, they do work together. They you know, they
stagger their they're working hours if you will. And you
know sometimes you know, one restaurant will stay open on
a on a Tuesday Wednesday, and another restaurant will like
reopen on a you know, a Thursday. So uh so
they do work together. Like I said, there's a pretty
(33:22):
good selection even in the shoulder season for food good
eateries and restaurants and places to have quite a great
selection of meals and dishes and fresh seafood and anything
from burgers to lobsters to uh, you know, clam chowders
and you know, anything you can think of, and ethnic
(33:44):
food of course, we mentioned.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
Earlier in the show the fairies are constantly running from
Boston right to Peetown. How about your picks for the
best pleasant places for people to stay if they're taking
a ferry but staying a couple of days or even
a few.
Speaker 8 (34:00):
Of course, here the chamber when the business of promoting
our members. So I would be happy to make a recommendation.
As far as any of our member ins and guest
houses goes, it depends on the budget and it depends
on what people are looking for. The in Providence we
(34:23):
have something for everyone as far as accommodations goes.
Speaker 3 (34:27):
Well, you answered that smartly, boy, that was smooth. You
don't want to piss anyone off, Mike. We just went
to Peetown and you spent the night. Where did you stay?
Speaker 2 (34:38):
I can't even remember. It was all the way down.
It was pretty far down, but it was nice. Actually
it was on both sides. Surf Is that right?
Speaker 3 (34:44):
The surf Is there a place called the surf Radu?
Speaker 4 (34:48):
Yes, surf side and see yeah, it's actually one side
is on the water, on the other side the other side.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
It was the only place we could get we did
last minute.
Speaker 3 (34:56):
Well, it's Peetown. You know, we haven't even mentioned yet.
The beaches, du the the beaches are breathtaking in pe Town.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
Beautiful.
Speaker 8 (35:04):
The beaches are fantastic. They're like well renowned. They've gotten
a lot of active lads throughout the years. And you
know Herringcove Beach, the Race Point beach, you know, from
anything to sunbathing to going you know, well watching offshore
if you'd like to. Having bonfires on those beaches are spectacular.
(35:28):
It can go wrong with that. And of course right
there you have the Cape Cod National Seashore, this protected
untouched land and the beautiful parabolic sand dunes that you
can only see in Provincetown. And like I said, we're
lucky to have the natural resources in Provincetown on the
(35:50):
Cape for our residents and visitors alike.
Speaker 3 (35:53):
And you must be proud because just recently two reports
of surveys came out. One called Provincetown the dog friendliest
town in all of Cape Cod and another report a
survey I saw, and it's almost like they knew I
was going to Pee Town.
Speaker 2 (36:11):
I'm like, is this an algorithm or something? What's going on?
Speaker 3 (36:14):
But they said Provincetown was named the number three or
four beachside town in all of America.
Speaker 8 (36:24):
I am not surprised one bit.
Speaker 3 (36:26):
Well, you know what, do you get to grab a
hold of those surveys and start pushing them down there
in Pee Town Before I let you go, very quickly,
give me one or two restaurants. People have to absolutely
have to go to when they get there.
Speaker 8 (36:38):
I would definitely try uh Front Street Restaurant if you
haven't tried it yet. It's great for every occasion.
Speaker 3 (36:45):
I talked to Arianella. I tried to get her on
the show. She was traveling this morning. So that's good.
Front Street. There's one go number two.
Speaker 8 (36:52):
I will say, probably on South Place.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
Oh.
Speaker 3 (36:56):
I went to South Place and I couldn't agree more.
Speaker 8 (36:58):
What give you a few other ones that lops the Pod,
the Mayflower, tinpan Alley, Victor's Restaurant, the Red and Restaurant,
nah I Rede, the screen Pig. There's a pleathora of
restaurant that he can choose throwing and.
Speaker 3 (37:12):
I don't mind telling you. I had a quick lunch
at Luke's Lobster right there at the mouth of Provincetown.
Marina and Titus and I had a great spot right
on the porch right over the sand Radu. Thank you
so much. Enjoyed the rest of your season down there
in beautiful Pee Town.
Speaker 8 (37:25):
All right, thank you so much.
Speaker 3 (37:27):
Okay, we'll take a break. When we come back, we'll
talk more with Mike Rockets. Salem Waterfront Hotel began anniversary
coming up and more with Macy. She'll clue you in
on some of the big things happening around Boston Harbor
before this season is done. And that's all next hang it.
Speaker 1 (37:42):
You're listening to Food for Thought, brought to you by
the Box Center and Salem Waterfront Hotel in sweets.
Speaker 3 (37:48):
Hey, folks, welcome back to Food for Thought. Just a
few minutes left. We've got Mike Rocket here from the
Salem Waterfront Hotel, Macy from Otion Hayman's. Okay, Macy, let's
start with you. We've still got plenty of time left.
The rest of August, September, October, all beauty ful in
and around Boston Harbor. What should people be looking forward to?
Speaker 6 (38:03):
One of my favorite things in August in the North
End or the food feasts every weekend, the different you
know deciding the North End puts on this big celebration,
tons of food. They have like games, activities, raffles, all
the fun. This weekend we just wrapped up the Fisherman's Feast,
that's one of the famous Flight of the Angel much fun.
And then this upcoming weekend is the Saint Anthony's Feast.
(38:24):
They'll be processions all throughout the North End each day
and again live music, food, It's gonna be a lot
of fun. So that's always a good time in the
North End. Something I just read in the Seaport is
weekly movie nights on Seaport Boulvoard that.
Speaker 3 (38:39):
Park right on the green.
Speaker 6 (38:41):
I think it's in one of the parking lots.
Speaker 3 (38:42):
So the Seaport has so much going on.
Speaker 6 (38:45):
Always something to do. So yeah, Boston Seaport and I
think Paranount Paramount plus excuse me are doing a free
weekly movie night Monday nights at six pm. Food trucks
will be there. You can bring your own little picnic.
Speaker 3 (38:57):
I've been to the free movie nights at Boston Harbor
ship yad those are fun too.
Speaker 6 (39:01):
Oh those are area.
Speaker 3 (39:02):
I met what's your name from? Alo at the Mary
And they had a grand opening, yes.
Speaker 6 (39:08):
Last Tuesday kicked off in the shipyard Alo Natural. It's
an a sie coffee shop. They have smoothies, salads, wraps both.
It's delicious. I went there for lunch last week.
Speaker 3 (39:22):
She was great and she's got a great story.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
Passes like that to get used to Africa. I mean, okay,
why did you have to go there? Should Africa don't
serve meter fish? She just start thinking about.
Speaker 3 (39:34):
That, Okay, I will you know you're gonna be sorry.
You may never see me come back from Africa.
Speaker 2 (39:40):
Or something. Just stay away from the giraffe. Make sure
you don't get hit in the head.
Speaker 3 (39:44):
Mike Salem One of Hern hotel twenty year anniversary really.
Speaker 4 (39:48):
Yep, it's coming up on the twenty sixth. We're looking
forward to it, but we're pretty busy now. It's it's amazing.
In twenty years, our August are like you know Octobers
ten years ago. Oh yeah, Salem is busy, starting in
April right through now November.
Speaker 8 (40:03):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (40:04):
So I mean October is crazy, but people still staying.
Speaker 3 (40:06):
And isn't the hotel booked pretty much year round?
Speaker 2 (40:09):
Yeah, it's pretty crazy. People book it a year, a
year or two and a day.
Speaker 3 (40:13):
And now it's all newly renovated. I mean you did
the entire hotel, including the pub.
Speaker 2 (40:18):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (40:18):
We are shutting there for one week in the mid
January to finish the pool.
Speaker 3 (40:23):
And out in front where the patio is, you've got
this really cool bench that it's like a boat.
Speaker 4 (40:30):
Oh yeah, we built it in our shop. It's actually
it looks like an old dory.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
So yeah, it's awesome, it's beautiful.
Speaker 4 (40:36):
It's the Instagram shot, you know, Yeah, ones that the
kids all have to have.
Speaker 3 (40:40):
So is the hotel already booked for Halloween weekend all
of October?
Speaker 2 (40:45):
Yeah, it's pretty much. It's pretty much booked. Like anything,
people back out at the last minute.
Speaker 4 (40:49):
I always tell people the thing with hotels is you've
always better off calling you.
Speaker 2 (40:54):
When you look online, there's always going.
Speaker 4 (40:56):
To show that it's over booked or it's too much money,
and you don't even know if you're on the right website.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
A lot of times, that's the biggest problem with hotels,
Like you're booking through orbits, but it says it's sail
and waterfront hotel.
Speaker 8 (41:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (41:07):
So I always tell people, hey, you get about a rate,
they'll always give you the most discounts. If you deal
directly with a hotel, always call because in October and
before October.
Speaker 2 (41:17):
It's always just it's you know there, every weekend it's
it's bumper, bumper.
Speaker 3 (41:21):
And now I know you renovated the pub. Did you
change the menu with the pump?
Speaker 4 (41:24):
Yeah, we're actually where we just changed the menu. We'll
have it probably starting about September fifteenth.
Speaker 3 (41:31):
And by the way. Got to give shout outs to
your beautiful daughter Margaret, who was featured. She narrated the
piece on dining playworker last weekend. Boy is she good?
Speaker 2 (41:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (41:40):
And Taylor Swift the other day. So it's uh, she's
she's having a good life.
Speaker 2 (41:45):
Actually I want her job. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (41:47):
I think she's seen Taylor Swift's ears to her like
fifteen times. She's currently in London as we.
Speaker 2 (41:52):
Speak, actually in Ireland right now.
Speaker 3 (41:54):
And then she's going to Vancouver, but we gotta go. Okay, Macy,
thank you, Michael, thank you. It's food for thought and
op next sixty minutes
