Spade down the middle of it wentsrading down the middle. Then it started
to the book just do we Weepen? And that's when Locati lost sight of
it. That a little good morning. It's the Golfing Around Radio Hour.
(00:27):
Yeah, man, I'm your host, Randy the Tank Tantlinger. Thanks for
joining me on this beautiful, beautifulsummer day in August here in Wheeling,
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Got a greatshow for you this week on the Golf
and Around Radio Hour. Heading toGettysburg. Heading to Gettysburg, we're gonna
explore the Penn National Golf Resort, home to two great golf courses. That's
(00:52):
thirty six, eighteen and eighteen. You take the Iron Forge course which is
gorgeous, which I love. Seriously, this is a really great golf course.
You've got to go play the IronForge golf Course at Penn National Golf
Community. It's right outside of Gettysburg. Then they have their Tradition golf course
(01:14):
there too, just a great layout. But we're gonna go to Penn National
outside of Gettysburg. Then guess what, it's time to catch up with my
old buddy general manager there did GMat the Wheeling Country Club, mister Rich
Conwell. You know Rich, He'sgot his Rich Conwell Golf show here on
Fox Sports Net, Wheeling, Pittsburgh. I love sitting down talking golf and
(01:38):
sports with Rich. He is soknowledgeable, not a good looking guy,
but that's why Rich has a radioshow and not a TV show, but
just so much fun to talk about. Then, of course we're gonna be
talking about, well, your chanceto win a trip to Scotland. Wait,
what did Tank just say? Isaid you could win a trip to
(01:59):
Scotland. If you're an amateur golfer, you want to stay tuned, you
want to listen how you can wina trip to Scotland by playing in the
Team USA National Championships and Gettysburg Septembertwenty second to the twenty fifth, playing
one of five flights and you'll bein Scotland St Andrew's next April twenty twenty
four for Team USA. But beforewe be in, let's go ahead and
(02:23):
head over. Grab the driver.Tee it up at the Wheeling Country Club
hole number one, and I'm gonnacrack it as far as I can,
and trust me, it's gonna landright near Gettysburg at the Penn National golf
resort. So let's talk to Patty. She runs the spectacular place over there.
It's got rooms to stay in,playing stay packages, awe inspiring views
(02:50):
of the mountains and nature around Gettysburg. So let's go talk to Patty over
at Penn National and learn more.Pen Nashville is in Franklin County, where
west of Gettysburg, about twenty minutes. We are in Orchard Country, in
(03:13):
the most beautiful part of Pennsylvania youwill ever see. The nicest part about
our location is we're framed by twomountains, the South Mountain to the east
and the Tuscarre to the west wherein the Cumberland Valley, and we are
within a few minutes of trailheads tothe Appalachian Trail, so hiking and outdoor
(03:38):
recreation are both abundant here. Ourgolf package customers come here because of our
location. Pennashville is a breadth offresh air based on where most people live.
It is green, it is rural, it is there are beautiful views.
Our golf courses are in world classcondition. Consistently, we are known
(04:00):
for our service, and once peoplefind us, they come back here after
year. It's because we're also veryaccessible. Most of our groups come from
within a half day's drive time.Instead of going to Myrtle Beach, or
to Florida or to Phoenix for theirgolf trips, they can get in the
car, they can drive here, and once they're here, they don't have
(04:20):
to get back in their cars. They can have their meals on property.
They have access to two world classgolf courses to play, and it's an
easy destination to reach. People livehere sometimes for the golf, sometimes for
the hiking, sometimes just for thelifestyle. But mostly people are here because
(04:42):
they want to be within a halfday's drive time of either their families or
their doctors, or where they usedto live. We are very accessible and
it is a beautiful part of theworld. You can explore your passions.
You can live the life that you'vebeen waiting to live here in Franklin County.
(05:05):
We have a forty eight room hotelwith lodges here in the property,
and most of our guests come forthree days, two nights, usually anywhere
from eight guys to forty eight guysand women, and they come for three
(05:26):
days, two nights. They havetheir meals in our restaurant, they play
both of our courses. They enjoythe amenities, the pool, the outdoor
views, and and they're here justto play golf. Most of the groups
play one round a day, butwe have the option that they can go
(05:46):
out and play a second eighteen. So people who come here are here for
the golf, they're here for thecamaraderie to be with their friends. A
lot of affinity groups, people whomay have worked together, kind of college
together, or just family reunions thatcome for for getaway. So that is
(06:09):
Patty with the penn National Golf Cluband in and community. Again. They're
just about twenty minutes outside of Gettysburgto the west, and I tell you
what, it's one of my newfavorite places resorts in Pennsylvania. I was
(06:30):
blown away, blown away. GolfDigest gives them four stars. Four stars,
and Golf Digest doesn't just throw thoseout, you know, you really
gotta earn those. When you lookat the topography in the area, beautiful,
(06:51):
just beautiful rolling terrain, gorgeous mountains. A seven acre lake comes to
play in the Founders Course. Thatwas the first course built there at Penn
National in nineteen sixty six, Adultlaid out and built the Founders course,
(07:12):
just a really gorgeous course if youlove pine trees and parkland golf. The
pine trees look like there might beNorwegians, like they've been there for thousands
of years, and they're gorgeous. They're all over the golf course. Like
I said, the seven acre lakecomes into play around several of the holes.
(07:41):
Really just amazing. The fourteenth partfive is spectacular, it's exceptional.
It's exceptional. The part three onnumber seventeen is well, there's signature hole.
Guess what you gotta go over thelake from the blues the tips.
(08:05):
It's one eighty four. But you'renot hitting down, which so many part
threes do. You're not hitting perfectlyhorizontal. Now the real test here is
it is elevated at least twenty fiveyards across the pond from you, so
(08:28):
it's an uphill shot in effect. So the bluets at one eighty four probably
Blainey bed two thirty uphill on anice peaceful day. But it's so gorgeous.
It's gorgeous, wonderful golf course atthe Founder's Golf Course. Then their
(08:50):
second eighteen Bill Love Design open forplay in nineteen ninety seven. It is
visually stunning. I went out tofilm for our TV show which is on
MASS and mid Atlantic Sportsnet down therein Virginia Baltimore area, and it just
(09:13):
all inspiring, breathtaking film to lateat night, early in the morning,
and if you've ever been on acourse, and I know you have in
the morning or evening, the colorsreally pop. It's beautiful. It's treeless.
First of all, there's not atree to be found. A couple
of lidergies here and there, butnot like on the Farmer's course. Now,
(09:37):
I hate the term links esque youguys that listen to the show.
No, I'm adamant about. Wedon't even want to hear that term applied
unless there is a ocean three hundredfeet away from the golf course. But
with the fields that are nearby inthe farmland and the rolling terrain you get
(10:03):
that well, as you guys know, it's just over in Scotland. You
get that rolling terrain that you love, the mountains, the gorgeousness, if
that be a word of the golfcourse, it's just I mean, it's
it's just a tremendous golf course.I mean, if you told me,
(10:26):
okay, you know you can onlyplay the Iron Forge golf course at Penn
National the rest of your life.I would be really really happy with that.
I really would. You could playthat course from the tips and it
gives you a distinct feel what theforward tease play. I know these things
(10:48):
because I got a bad lower back. You know, I'm playing golf to
have fun with the guys and thegirls and just enjoy the day. So
I'll play from whatever teas I'm feelingcomfortable with that day. If I'm by
myself and I want to see thegolf course, and believe me, the
(11:09):
way I sprayed around, I seethe golf course. Great joke. I
was golfing in Waterville, Ireland, great golf course down to the south with
the pro Liam years ago, andhe was a long European long drive champion,
so he can imagine how he canbang a ball. So I hit,
of course, my awe inspiring onehundred and forty seven yard drive off
(11:33):
the team on the back nine somewhereand it went over into the fescue and
the gorse to the left and wefinally found the ball. And I looked
at Liam and I said, Liam, how do I play this? Out
of here, and he goes, how the hell would I know? I
never hit it over hair. Sowhen I tell you I see all of
the golf course most of the time, that's because I'm hacking away out there.
(11:56):
But both courses are incredible. Areincredible golf courses, and I try
to give you guys an honest perspectiveon golf courses and a golf equipment.
You know, like we're about todo our annual equipment review. Got some
(12:16):
great things came in. Do youremember Old Ram Golf, Tom Kite,
Tom Watson McGregor Golf. They're backin action, and I can't wait to
go play the set of sticks thatthey sent me. And I'll tell you
about them in a couple of weeks. But I'm honest with you, Like
if you guys go and see agolf ball called Saint nine. Saint nine,
(12:41):
it's got these like little logos onthem that are cute with animals.
I don't know if they're marketing ofthe kids. The old tanker recommends you
keep your money in your your yourwallet. Okay. They play like a
rock, okay, a rock withI don't know the hard This plastic from
nineteen sixty eight wrapped around them.Man, do not waste your money on
(13:05):
Saint nine golf balls. I'm tellingyou, You'll do it one time and
you'll wish you had that money back. So there there, it's me giving
you honest assessment of golf equipment.Squares, golf shoes, buy them,
They're worth every penny. But whenI'm talking to you about a golf course,
I shoot straight with you. I'mtelling you drive and Gettysburg is so
(13:28):
close. I can't believe how manypeople in Wheeling, in Pittsburgh and Whinstern,
PA think Gettysburg is a huge driveaway. It's two and a half
three hours. It's right there, man, it's gorgeous. It's part of
the Gettysburg golf Trail. All right. So we'll go back to Penn National
in the next segment. Guess whereI'm heading this weekend, gay Lord Michigan.
(13:52):
Yeah, man, can't wait tohead back up there. We'll get
your show up there. Guests, who tanks gonna be hanging out with Shooting
McGavin, yep, shooting McGavin fromHappy Gilmore and also the Man, the
Myth, the legend, Well,my probably my brother from another mother,

(14:15):

this. John plays music and gettied and I can play some songs from
John this week's show, and thisone sums it all up for him.
Hit It Hard by John Daily,Well, I've won and lost against the
(14:43):
best. This old roads been ahell of a test. I'm steel drive.
I ain't slowing down. There's rulesI love to break and bend.
Mistakes I've made again again. ButI tell you this, my friends,
I'm still around. I hit ithard man so far man, no laying
(15:09):
up, no holding man. Hain'ta prey to nothing. It's in that
real baby. Hit it long man. He was gone man, he taking
chances, living lunch. I hitit, hit it hard. Yeah,
(15:35):
most people would have given up bynow, all the rough I've seen these
ups and downs. Somehow I justkeep on playing through. So all your
critics pull up a chair at theWinter Circle soon. I'll be there with
a high five and a smile foryou. Hit it hard man, so

It's a natural fact. They hita long mantial it's gone, man,
Keep taking chance, living lunch.I hit it, I hit it,
I hite had had enough of peopletrying to tell me how to live
(16:41):

Sure I gamble at a drink andsmoke three packs a day. Hell,
ain't country music supposed to be thisway? It's from the hard man.
(17:03):
I hit it hard. Man,man, no laying up, no holding

(23:26):

Penn National. It's fabulous there.I'm telling you go there if you love
to golf and travel. Penn NationalGolf Resort near Gettysburg is for you,
all right. Like I said, heading up to Michigan, Gaylord to hang
out with a man, the myth, the legend himself, John Daily.
(23:49):
Yeah, and now I've been aroundJohn a couple of times. In case
you didn't know this, John's agent, Bud Martin, is a Pittsburgh guy.
Yeah, Bud Martin, he's aPittsburgh guide. Had done good for
himself. He represents, like someof the top golfers in the world,
Ricky Fowler being one of them,Pittsburgh's own Bud Martin one of the best
(24:14):
sports golf sports agents out there.Remarkable. So we're gonna play another John
Daily song right now. In caseyou didn't know it, John sings plays
guitar and he's pretty darn good man. If you were walking to Barton didn't
know who he was and heard himsinging, you go that boy ain't bad
that kid from Arkansas, he ain'tbad singer. Many of John's songs,
(24:37):
as you can imagine, a longball rebel one of my favorite deal with
his life, honestly, his drinkingand his gambling and his rough housing and
man, give me the guy that'sgonna be honest. And you know who
he is. Okay, you knowwho John Daly is. You know you
know he's been arrested drunk out infront of the Hooters. He don't give
(25:00):
a damn that you know. Giveme John Daley, who will walk onto
a green with a beer or adiet coke and a cigarette out of his
mouth, go hold this to hiscaddy, gets a driver out and pounds
at five hundred yards, says thanks, as opposed to I don't know somebody
else that hides his infidelities. Hismouthfeasances. I know there's kids listening,
(25:27):
so I'm not gonna go too hardhere. Well, you're driving around,
gets caught by his wife in theworld and gets up in front of a
microphone, goes down with his mommy, and the side says, I'm really,
really sorry. I have a Ihave a problem. I'm most sexual
(25:48):
addict, and I have to goto a place in Arizona, right mom,
Arizona. And I'm real sorry aboutthat. As you got caught,
like the judge says, the onlyreason you're sorry because you got caught Tiger
Woods. Remember that with Tiger Nikedoes it put him out of the golf
(26:10):
business for a while. I wouldhave had more respect for Tiger Woods.
Had he pulled a John Daly andhis agents said you got to do a
press conference, and Tiger Woods wouldhave said, yeah, all right,
no problem, walked in, wouldhave bottle of wild turkey, a bottle
of champagne, Tiffany and Stephanie fromthe Purple Peppermint Club down there in Fort
(26:33):
Lauderdale wearing bikinis, and said tothe whole world, poured himself a wild
turkey and looked at the Cameron saidI'm Tiger Woods. I like to play
golf. This is Tiffany, thisis Stephanie. I liked them too,
and I like ice cold wild turkey. So I'm not taking any questions today,
(26:55):
but I am going to go playsome golf. I'm Tiger Woods.
Out that I would have had respectfor that. I would have had some
type of respect for. Not me, Mommy, I got caught. Did
come press conference with me? Imake good. I don't want to lose
money from sponsors. This is whywe love John Daily, love him,
(27:22):
hate him, disagree with his lifestyleon a moral and ethical basis. Least
you cast the first stone amongst you. This is why we love John Daily.
We have seen his life on fulldisplay in front of us as golf
fans, and we love him forit because what you see is what you
(27:47):
get with John Daily. All Right, I'm gonna play one of John's songs,
Whiskey and Waters. I got afriend who's a preacher, knows most
(28:15):
of my sin. He don't criticizeme and say I'm damn In the end,
he tells me, next Sunday they'rehaving baptism. I go down in
(28:37):
that water, They'll all be forgiven. My old friend Jack Daniel's only me
alone. I'm here standing at thecross room. One can leave me the
(29:03):
other street to the farther and I'msomewhere between the whiskey and water. I've
danced with the devil, laid downwith the angels. Both of them found
(29:26):
me willing are able. Water can'twash clean. The slims are a man.
Why whiskey is the gateway to theon prom slander. My whole friend
(29:52):
Jack canuel on me alone. I'mhere standing got the cross roodsos. One
can't lead me to hell, theother street, to the father room.
(30:14):
I'm stung with this kid high watercome into the world, kicking in and
(31:00):
screaming. She can the lie andbattle and demon woman who whiskey for cool
water? One way or another,I'm going under my old friend and yours
(31:32):
only. I'm us standing at thecross rooms. One can't me to Hell,
the other stream to the father.I'm somewhere whisky water, somewhere between
(32:01):
biskey hat water. Well. I'veworn and lost against the best. This
(32:42):
old road has been a hell ofa test. I'm still dropping. I
ain't slowing down. There's rules Ilove to break and bend, mistakes I've
made again again. But I tellyou this, my friends, I'm still
around. I hit it hard man, so far man, no laying up,
(33:06):
no holding man. Hain't afraid ofnothing. It's a natural baby.
Hit it long, man till it'sgone. Man, Keep taking chances,
living lunch. I hit it,hit it, he hit hard. Yeah,
(33:31):
most people would have given up bynow, all the rough I've seen,
these ups and downs. Somehow Ijust keep on playing through. So
all your critics pull up a chairat the winter circle. Soon I'll be
there with a high five and asmile for you. Hit it hard man,
(33:55):
so far man, don't laying up. No hold a man afraid and
nothing. It's a natural man. They hit it long man until it's gone.
Man can't taking chance, living lunch. I hit it, I hit
it, I hit hit it hardwell. I've worn and lost against the
(34:37):
best. This old road has beena hell of a test. But I'm

we're just located just north of theborder in North Carolina, right on the
coast in Brunswick County. It's beautiful. What is it five little islands you
have off the off the coast here, it's five I think it's five total.
Yes, Wow, it's just gorgeousand it's a weird thing. Later

Yeah, you long hitters are goingto have some options there. You guys
that are wedged players, guess whatwe got golf courses for you too.
(39:37):
Well. The good thing we'll startwith is we've got three full eighteen hole
golf courses, actually by a differentdesigner each one of them. So we've
got a unique experience at each oneof the courses. You know, that's
the thing. I mean, ifyou pay play a Pete Die golf course,
you know what you're getting with aPete Die. So you've got a
(39:58):
Reese Jones design, We've got RhysJones. We've got a Willard Bird,
Willard Bird, and we've got aDan Maples as well. Oh, everybody
loves Dan Maples from the South.I do too. That's actually that's my
favorite of the three courses. Whenyou say Maples has a soft, gentle
way of designing, Like we justsaid, Pete Dye, I mean Dye
(40:21):
gives you the world railroad ties andproblems in real rough line. Maple is
more of a a Monee. It'sit's a subtle just honestly, every time
I'm out there, it's like aneasy feeling. That's what I like about
it, right, Yeah, threegreat different golf experiences. Yes, yes,
we've got the three different golf experiences. We've got the accommodations actually on
(40:45):
property. So the good thing herewe like to have you. You know,
once you come here, you've gotthree courses to play, You've got
morning afternoon tea times. You know, you can do thirty six holes a
day three days. You can goright back to your condo, which is
right on property. You really don'thave to leave the area. You know.
(41:07):
The condos are really what we're stayingin are just magnificent. I know
some properties are a little bit datedand don't put back into their condo experiences,
but you guys are really top shelfin the condos. I'm really enjoying
it. Everything's Here's the crazy thing. You know what's impressed me. Yeah.
A shower curtain. A shower curtain. Yes. Have you've seen the
(41:30):
shower curtains in the condos? Youknow I haven't. It is the coolest
thing and I'll probably put it ina video. You know where the loop
comes over the shower. Yeah, instead of having the loop exposed, it
is a palm tree. Oh thatis cool. It is just a little
classy thing. Yeah, I haveseen that yep, yeah, right,
Yeah, that's attention to detail andto me, that's what so far at
(41:53):
Sea Trails I'm enjoying because you canopen up your doors and okay, we'll
renovate every five years. Don't worry, we'll paint. You guys are on
top of things. Yeah, andthat's you know, that's kind of being
up here in Brunswick County. Wehave that. It's a little more of
a laid back feel and we tryto do that with everything here on property,
(42:15):
you know, from the bag dropto in the pro shop. We
want everybody to come here feel relaxed. If you're on vacation, you know,
you're not supposed to be stressed outabout work or any of that stuff.
So you come here, you relax. That's what we try to give
you, is that experience to beable to relax and enjoy this beautiful sun.
(42:37):
Yeah, the southern sunshine, nodoubt about it. Now it is
mid October. Now, the peopleup north it's starting to get a little
bit colder, especially Cannada. Yeah, it's getting colder, you know,
they're heading south. Laid back lifestylehere, the niceness to tranquility, I
think is not only a selling pointfor someone that would want to come visit
(42:58):
Brunswick, North Carolina, but maybeeven move here. Oh definitely. Yeah,
I mean that's kind of been abig, a big push here now
is we've seen a lot more peopleactually come down here for retirement. Like,
for instance, when you first droveinto the to the gates here,
you saw all these new single familyhomes going up. We've actually got several
(43:22):
single family homes. We've got afew multifamily homes going up just in this
property alone. So that's been abig trend. Is you know, people
actually moving down here, whether it'sfull time or you know, we have
snowbirds, we have this people justhaving their vacation homes. We've seen a
(43:42):
lot more of that than we've hadin the past. Well, let's get
back into golfing around these three beautifulgolf courses. Yes, I mean the
rece course are really enjoy very much. There's the mounding. You know,
I ain't the word lynx esk, yes, you know, because you know
lynx esk I hate, but you'vegot a lot of mounding around the green
(44:07):
complexes and it's to me on theon the rece course, it's uh,
you've got nice fairways green complexes.Uh yeah, I mean that's kind of
where your strokes are gonna be gattingand lost out here on the Jones course,
that is. You know, it'sgenerous from tea to green, but
around the green is where you're goingto see the mounding around the green.
(44:29):
So if you missed the green, you know you're gonna have a tough up
and down. And here's the pointwith that for me at least. So
if you mound and I really likethem, okay, okay, you if
you're a heavy bomber like these kidsare anymore, that's I'm buying fore twenty
off the tea box. What youknow, even two eighty yeah, you
(44:49):
know to me is long. Okay, well now it is for me too,
right, And then their second shotis equally as long. Then they're
on the green in the are putting, and then they're putting all kind of
you know, eagles and bars upto me, When Eurhice Jones designs the
I'll call it the United Kingdom ScottishIreland mounding around the greens. Yes,
(45:16):
then your long ball doesn't help you, That's exactly right. You gotta go
to work if one of those ballsgets say, behind a mound that's eight
feet up above the green. Yeah, it's yes, what this is called
a pitching ledge. That's it.It takes great control, right, that's
it, and it's to me thatbrings the game more into it really,
(45:38):
instead of just a green that okay, okay, you got a bunker there
and some water there. Well,I'll tell you a perfect example, number
ten, just over three hundred yardsfrom the back teeth. We actually had
a hole in one on that holethe other day. But I've seen plenty
of three ten Yeah you stop threeten hole in one, yes, yes,
(46:01):
this is why you're using this asan example. Yeah, right,
But I've also seen the same people, you know, go for that green.
There's water all in front of it, there's a bunker that protects that
green, and obviously all the moundingaround it. Talk us through the other
course, what's like distinctive. Imean, we know the Rhys Jones course
has the mounding around the greens. What would the maple? Yes, the
(46:23):
Maples is going to be more yourtraditional tree line course. So that's actually
the oldest course that we have onthe property. That was the first one
that was built and it has alot of mature oaks on it. It
gives you a little bit more ofthat your typical country club, old school
field. I always love. Iheard a guy today actually talk about how
(46:45):
he was playing hickory stick clubs.Yeah, Timmy's with him. Yeah yeah,
And I said, man, thatwould fit perfect over the Maples.
That's I always say. It's it'sa traditional feel. Everything there is kind
of your your natural, real traditionalgolf course. I love it because it's
not it's not a long course, but again, you know that's where your
(47:09):
drives have to be in play.Well, I'm a member of the Golf
Heritage Society, okay, and weplay hickory tournaments all the time. Okay,
so you know that parking back tothe lineage of golf that is the
maple design. That's that's it.I mean, that's kind of good.
Do I get a cookie? Youget you get a cookie. That's the
big thing over on Maples is it. It's traditional. You know. I
(47:32):
love the feel of it. Itreminds me of when I was younger.
You know, I'm from smaller townthan Kansas, and it's it's a different
field than what golf has turned intowith the you know, everything being grandiose's
this is just your straight up we'replaying golf. I love that. Yeah
(47:52):
right, yeah yeah, every everyevery course anymore seems to be eight thousand
yards and clause these kids banging atthree twenty. That's it, you know,
all right? Our third course talkcourse as the bird course, will
we bird? That one is goingto be a little bit tighter of your
course, you know, not astight as Maples. Bird is really big
(48:15):
into you know, creating the waterhazards, the It has some some fairway
bunkers in there, some waste areas. His whole thing is basically trying to
make it feel like you're in nature. So that whole course is like it
like golfing and feeling like you're natureexactly Why would I want that? But
(48:37):
that's kind of the feeling you haveon the bird course, is that you're
on a nature walk while you're playinggolf. Now you're talking to my heart.
I mean, look, I'm ahigh handicapper. Okay, I only
play a golfer on television. Okay, you know I'm a hacker. But
I love this game. I hopeI played to the day I die.
But it is seeing the snapping turtlesthe four year I saw this morning.
(48:59):
Yes, that looked at me like, what are you doing here? You
know? It was just your monkey. Yeah, yeah, he's around some
place. Uh. But you know, even the alligators. Yeah, you
know, the trees, the pinecones. I'm from Pittsburgh, we have
pine trees. But you know, smelling the pine trees springtime with magnolia,
(49:21):
you know, it's it really isfor me, communing with nature. I'm
a guy who likes to walk inthe woods and listen to streams, and
I think that's why golf has alwaysappealed to me. So that walk in
the woods after your drive. Yeah, now I love
