Is it Ohio, Ohio's Capital. Hello, and welcome to the
Golfing Around Radio Hour. I'm your host, Randy the tank Tatlicker.
Did you have a good fourth of July? Did you
get to hit the ball around?

Speaker 6 (02:22):
I did. It was down there at Tara Alta, Tara Alta,
West Virginia. If you never heard of the Tarra Alta Resort,
I don't even want to tell you about it. It's
so nice you shouldn't go there. Look, don't ever go there.
If you want to sit beside a beautiful tranquil lake
and relax, don't go to Terra Alta Resort. If you

(02:45):
want to play golf, Mountain golf at its very best
don't go to Terra Alta. You won't have a good time,
I promise you, like I did, and like I planned
to go back a couple more times before this summer
is over, No doubt about it. Terra Alta Resort. If
you don't know about it in West Virginia, don't go there.
Don't go have a good time like I did. Hey,

(03:09):
we got a great show for you this week. So
much to talk about. We're gonna talk about how you
can win a trip to Saint Andrews, Scotland. We're gonna
talk about, well, my recent visit to Scotland east of Edinburgh.
That area east of Edinburgh, their capital in Scotland is
known as Scotland's Gulf Coast. And of course Northern Ireland.

(03:34):
Northern Ireland will be the focus of the world in
several weeks as the Open Championship returns to Royal Port Rush.
Can Royal Rory McElroy continue the magic that's going on
this season after his Master's win. So much to talk

(03:57):
about about Northern Ireland, Ireland golf, So let's teat up
first this week on Golfing around Radio Hour. We're gonna
get on the jet and we're gonna head on over
Arnold Palmer's flying it. There we go over Nova Scotia,
over the Atlantic. Boom. Thanks Arnold for the trip. Yep.
Gonna get off right here in Belfast and discover golf

(04:20):
in Northern Ireland. You know, I've had the pleasure to
golf in Northern Ireland I don't even know how many
times now, and each time I come away saying this,
and now I know it to be the truth. Northern
Ireland has the greatest collection of golf courses on the

(04:42):
face of the planet. They just do Yeah, you know
the names like Royal Port Rush where the Open Championship
will be, but courses like Port Stewart, Royal County down,
Go West, Go West, bally Lyiff and there's so much

(05:05):
great golf links, golf Castle Rock in Northern Ireland. So
you know, as I said, I went over in April
as I do every year, and spent two weeks in Ireland,
a week in the North, week in Dublin. And let's
tee it up right now. I'm gonna talk with my

(05:26):
buddy Brian Weiss with golf trips dot Com. Brian was
on the trip with me and just an incredible journey
and here we'll talk about some great accommodations and of
course Royal Port Rush and the other great golf in
the area. Hey, golfing around with golf Trips dot Com.

(05:47):
I'm golfing around and he's golf trips dot Com.

Speaker 7 (05:50):
You know behind us is the Open champion, Shane Lowry.
Shane Lowry. You know the Open was just here five
years ago.

Speaker 6 (06:00):
Go Brian in Northern Ireland at Royal Port Rush and
I can literally see the clubhouse from.

Speaker 7 (06:05):
Where we are right now.

Speaker 6 (06:07):
You know, the night he won, Shane took the Cleric
juggy and partied up and down these streets and every
single pub in town. Will we see Rory McElroy do
the same thing because you may not know this, but
this is Rory's basically his home course. He grew up
in this area. He started playing Port Rush when he

(06:29):
was a wee kid. Brian, what do you think Rory's
chances are?

Speaker 8 (06:34):
Well, he's already won the Masters, so I think it's
one down, three to go.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
Wow.

Speaker 7 (06:40):
Wow. Wouldn't that be something this year? Wouldn't that be something?

Speaker 6 (06:44):
You know? The magic of Ireland is on full display
here in Northern Ireland. The Republic just down the road
and we'll get to that later. Full display Irish hospitality.
We've seen a curring gate. Those people have been wonderful
there everywhere we've gone on the golf course.

Speaker 7 (07:02):
Your caddy yesterday gave you his bib. I've never heard
of such a thing.

Speaker 8 (07:06):
You know what what it is amazing was the caddy
master was a member and was just absolutely in love.

Speaker 4 (07:15):
With Castle Rock, his home course.

Speaker 8 (07:17):
And yeah, he took his best right after and said, hey,
glad to meet another a passionate golfer and handed me
his best How.

Speaker 4 (07:25):
Who is that?

Speaker 7 (07:26):
Right? Right?

Speaker 6 (07:27):
Well, let's go down the list to some of the
great golf courses in the area. So Castle Rock, which
we got to play yesterday, incredible links course. Gordon, the
caddy master, took Brian around. I was behind you guys acting.

Speaker 7 (07:42):
What was the experience like, Brian?

Speaker 8 (07:44):
Yeah, you know what I think. First, right off the gate,
you felt at home. You know, the members came out,
they were welcoming, you know, handing me the ballmarkers, asking
where you're from.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
So from the opening.

Speaker 8 (07:54):
Key shot, you know, the winds picked up, the sun
came out. We had ray, massive dunes, dorse everything you
want from a link style golf course, we had views.
I'm whole number sixteen, which is one of their signature holes.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
You could see three countries to the north.

Speaker 8 (08:13):
Believe it or not, you can see southern Ireland and
that's just a geography you amazement, just go based on
the geography and the history of the country.

Speaker 4 (08:23):
You could see Northern Ireland and then across.

Speaker 8 (08:26):
The pactic you could see Scotland.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
So three countries you could see.

Speaker 7 (08:31):
I thought I saw the staff Statue of Liberty.

Speaker 8 (08:33):
Yeah, I would imagine you could on a real clue day,
On a real clue day, Castle Rock just down the
road here from our wonderful accommodation set curing Gate.

Speaker 6 (08:44):
And of course royal Port Rush will once again host
the Open Championship. You know, Brian, this little coastal town
of royal Port Rush is already a buzz for the
Open to come back five short later years later after
Chain's victory, this little coastal town is gonna be well

(09:06):
rocking for the Open champions.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
Yet to see their you know, hometown legend.

Speaker 8 (09:10):
You know, have a chance to win another major, especially
getting the Monkey office back over the last I think
at about a ten year stretch of not winning.

Speaker 4 (09:19):
I think they're ready.

Speaker 8 (09:20):
I mean they are talking about golf everywhere we go.
Everybody asked if we watched the Masters. Of course we
watched it. They had to get up a little early
to or stay up late to step Lake stap Lake
to watch that, watching the collapse and then win it again.

Speaker 7 (09:39):
Amazing, amazing.

Speaker 6 (09:41):
You know, Kieran Gate is only built in twenty nineteen
for the last Open Championship, and you know what.

Speaker 7 (09:48):
They're putting on their rits once again. They're redoing all
the windows.

Speaker 6 (09:53):
I mean they're only five years old, but they want
to look their very best as the world's golf turns
itself to Royal Port Rush. They're great accommodations. As we
continue to we we should actually.

Speaker 4 (10:07):
Talk the name of the give us a full name.

Speaker 7 (10:11):
It is Curing Gates, luxury apartments.

Speaker 8 (10:14):
And the luxury and European usually don't go from an American
standpoint going the same sentence, and it's first rate.

Speaker 6 (10:21):
I feel like we're in like Clint Eastwood's house right now.

Speaker 7 (10:25):
It's that wonderful Curing Gate.

Speaker 6 (10:28):
And look, if you're on a golf trip through golf
trips dot com with Brian's company. You can book a
stay and play here, stay at the incredible Curing gate,
go play the courses we're going through now, Royalport, Rush,
Castle Rock, Brian, some of those other great courses in
the area.

Speaker 4 (10:45):
Port Stewart right down the road, uh Yonder.

Speaker 6 (10:49):
Famed as the best opening shot in all of Irish
golf north and south.

Speaker 7 (10:55):
Can't wait to tee it up there. I've been there
before and it kind of is the greatest opening shot
in all of golf. It's just spectacular now.

Speaker 8 (11:05):
And our Cabby Master yesterday said, if you're flying into Dublin,
there are a lot more NonStop flights into Dublin than
there is Belfast. So if you're flying to Dublin, cross
off Royal County Down.

Speaker 4 (11:18):
And our Glass on the way off. Stay stay today there,
get to Northern Ireland. You are going to be home here.

Speaker 6 (11:26):
I would even say for golfers from around the world,
if you're gonna do one golf trip in your life,
come to Northern Ireland. The courses Brian just mentioned, Art Glass,
Royal County Down ranked number one in the world for
many many years, right, Castle Rock, Royal Port, Rush Port, Salon.

(11:51):
And that's not even if you want to get in
the car and drive about two hours due west of
or Rush.

Speaker 7 (11:58):
There are so you played some of those.

Speaker 8 (12:00):
Yeah, we played Strand Hill, Carn Russ's Point which was County.

Speaker 4 (12:04):
Sligo and Ennis Throne and I did our travel.

Speaker 8 (12:09):
Through a company called the Links of Ireland, which is
a fantastic job of setting up accommodations.

Speaker 4 (12:15):
We were braving up to tap of those winding roads.

Speaker 8 (12:18):
Were driving on the incorrect or the other side of
the road, not a problem, just aiming between the two lines,
stay sober and ghet the gas pedal.

Speaker 7 (12:27):
You know what I'm loving right now?

Speaker 6 (12:29):
Saint Patrick's Church here in Port Rush. They have twelve
thirty mass every single day and you can hear the
bells chiming for mass behind us.

Speaker 7 (12:40):
Now, just the.

Speaker 6 (12:41):
Majesty of Ireland, the hospitality of the people alone will
make you come to Ireland. But again, the quality of
golf Brian is just off the charts Brian. So many
of us are used to play in parkland golf courses.
Parkland is your back home where there's no ocean near

(13:02):
it or big body of water. How do you explain
links golf and the difference between playing a parkling course
back home, and the challenge, the beauty, the creativity of
shot making in a link's course.

Speaker 8 (13:18):
Yes, humps and bumps, thumpson pumps, winds, wind and breeze,
wind and breeze, fast and furious. I mean that's pretty.

Speaker 7 (13:25):
Much sums it up.

Speaker 4 (13:26):
Sums it up.

Speaker 8 (13:28):
Whenever you possibly can get a caddy book that at
the time of getting your tea times don't expect to
arrive at the golf course, and the caddies are not
just gonna be laying around waiting for your arrival.

Speaker 4 (13:38):
So set that up before you get here.

Speaker 8 (13:40):
The stories they can tell, the lines and angles, and
the best way to get to the green. Maybe give
yourself a power or a birdie punt. That is the
way to play it. So how I would play it,
I guess just go home and when you're at home,
played the windiest day you possibly can, thirty miles an hour,
try to hit some knockdown shots.

Speaker 6 (14:00):
Rain in there, don't stay at homego I only golf
when the sun comes out.

Speaker 7 (14:05):
It ain't gonna happen in Ireland. Okay, you got everything, but.

Speaker 6 (14:08):
I haven't told my rain jacking out in five days
yet We've been blessed with beautiful April weather.

Speaker 8 (14:13):
Putting back in your stands, take an extra club or two,
flight your ball.

Speaker 4 (14:17):
Down and run in doubt. If you're within twenty yards.

Speaker 8 (14:21):
Pot Potts putt pull out to Texas wedge in Ireland,
oxymoron and keep it low.

Speaker 4 (14:28):
Get him running, get him running like a pults.

Speaker 7 (14:30):
Yeah, absolutely, Randie.

Speaker 8 (14:32):
I think we should just give pay homage to our accommodations.
So the Kure and Gates luxury apartments are set up
to sleep for there are three bedrooms, so two guys
open your course and get a room. Two guys would
share tdr Host and the concierge, the manager, which is amazing,

(14:54):
amazing woman said many times.

Speaker 4 (14:56):
Of course them will take two of the apartments. Yep,
I mean come apartments. Is a shame they are.

Speaker 7 (15:03):
Know their houses.

Speaker 6 (15:04):
I mean literally you could live in there comfortably. You're
overlooking the beach, the ocean off.

Speaker 7 (15:12):
The back of our patio.

Speaker 6 (15:13):
We're looking at number ten on Royal Port Rush. I mean,
if you're a golf not a golf aholic, as our
friend Fred says, you're in ground zero for great accommodation.

Speaker 8 (15:26):
You're a hybrid away Dede has a range rover that
will She will drive you to the pubs, I believe,
pick you up from the airport, take you to the courses.

Speaker 4 (15:35):
She treats you like one of her own.

Speaker 8 (15:38):
Every morning we had a I'd call it a kind
of a breakfast, but that's a disservice.

Speaker 4 (15:42):
We had omless and.

Speaker 8 (15:43):
Fruit and with our own personal chef, own personal chef,
and then one of the coolest things. I packed pretty
light because normally I pick up a sweater sweatshirt along.

Speaker 7 (15:53):
The way, seven or second or eight or nine of them.

Speaker 4 (15:56):
Sorry, Jen my wife, if you're watching that, I really
don't buy that many, although you know I do.

Speaker 8 (16:01):
They had a washer and dryer in the suite in
the apartment, so I already did laundry. So I'm fresh
for another another seven days with amazing.

Speaker 4 (16:08):
Golf in Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Speaker 6 (16:11):
Curing Gate in Northern Ireland, Port Rush, incredible Accommodation's incredible service.

Speaker 7 (16:20):
Again. DDR host is here just about every single day, Brian.

Speaker 6 (16:24):
I swear to goodness, if I said, ma'am, can you
find us a unicorn? She'd go out running around looking
for it. But here's the amazing thing.

Speaker 7 (16:33):
You're going to live like a rock.

Speaker 6 (16:34):
Star for the week you're here in Northern Ireland at
curing Gate.

Speaker 7 (16:40):
The price is so affordable. I'm not kidding.

Speaker 6 (16:46):
You're living a rich Carlton four seasons lifestyle at the
curing Gate while you're here.

Speaker 8 (16:52):
But one hundred and fifty dollars an I depend on
in season l t for a person in person and
and you actually have a shower that you know guys
like you can fit in can fit in. It was
hot water continuous for more than five minutes. Beds are comfortable,
washer dryer, fully stocked fridge.

Speaker 6 (17:10):
On number twelve, I'm still looking for a ball I
lost eight years ago. I nutted this shot, man, and
you know how badly I play. I knutted this shot
went downhill. It was nowhere to be found, and everybody
in the group was like, it's got to be in
the hole. I'm gonna go look for that ball now
because they still can't find it.

Speaker 4 (17:31):
Well, it's leugh for me.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
Capita Planning a golf trip to Scotland. Take a look
at Scotland's Golf Coast with twenty one golf courses all
within twenty minutes for each other. This is the greatest

Speaker 6 (19:01):
Hey, welcome back to this week on Golfing Around. I'm
your host Grandy the Tank Tanlinger. Hey, thanks for joining
me every week or listening to the Golfing Around podcast
on the one the only iHeart Radio podcast network, the
world's largest podcast network with iHeartMedia over ninety million listeners. Unbelievable.

(19:28):
Appreciate you folks who tune into listening to Golfing around
radio hour. We like to have fun. We'd like to
have guests on the show. We like to take you
to exotic destinations like Scotland's Golf Coast. Scotland's golf coast.
That is for you people that are geographically challenged. See

(19:49):
you got England and above that is Scotland. The capital
of Scotland is Edinburgh. Edinburgh, you've heard of it, certainly.
Well east of Edinburgh are twenty one of the world's
greatest championship links courses, a few parklands as well. In

(20:12):
this area is known as Scotland's Gulf Coast. Spend some
time there this past April and I can tell you
it's an incredible journey. First of all, the landscape, the
topography is perfect for the lynks golf. It just doesn't

(20:33):
get any better. You're right up against the North Atlantic.
Your journey just begins on day one. Just pick any
one of the twenty one golf courses to play, step
on that golf course and you're going to be on
your way to an epic golf journey. Mine began at

(20:54):
the Glen. The Glen on Easter Sunday. I arrived in.
The good people were there. They give me a cheeseburger
and said, do you want to go golf on Easter Sunday?
Knock yourself out. Some of the holes on the glen
were just spectacular ocean side par threes, which is me

(21:17):
the seagulls and the ocean in the greens abutting out
into the ocean. That was just the beginning of the journey.
That course alone there in North Berwick, the East Course
would be worth the trip. If you were flying to

(21:38):
Edinburgh and say I'm gonna play one golf course on
Scotland's golf coast. H you couldn't go wrong playing the
East Coast. But there's so much golf there it's incredible.
Were you gonna need accommodations right for your trip, so
you want to stay at the Garlton Lodge. The Garlton

(21:58):
Lodge I called the Ritz Garleton the Ritz Garleton because
it's just first class accommodations. A gentleman, David Cockerton runs
the lodge and it is first class. Everything is first class.
Beautiful views overlooking the Scottish coast and of course you're

(22:21):
minutes away from those courses I told you about. They're
right there, all part of Scotland's golf coast. So once
you have your accommodations at Garleton, it's time to begin
your epic Germany, you know, and explore the area all
the great golf in the area. You have the Renaissance
Club where the Scottish Open is being played within the

(22:44):
next few days, the legendary Yearfield Links, and the list
goes on, Dunbar, Loughness, New Craigie Law. So many golf courses,
not even to mention Gallon, which has three incredible golf courses.

(23:08):
So let's catch up now with my buddy Graham. Graham
is in charge of some of the marketing for Scotland's
golf coast east of Edinburgh, and he'll speak to well
the wonderful topography of the land and how you can
enjoy Scotland's golf coast today. Just book a trip and

(23:28):
go and you'll be happy. I promise you. It's I
can't even wait to get back.

Speaker 9 (23:34):
So it's celebrated its three hundred and fiftieth anniversary three
years ago. I believe I'm being tested on that, so
it's certainly on record as being one of, if not.

Speaker 7 (23:46):
The oldest golf course in the world.

Speaker 9 (23:50):
People obviously think and Andrews is the home of golf,
and it is the home of golf and one of
the original golf courses, but from a from a history
perspective and when it was dated back to the golf
has played muscomber Older is, it's certainly laying claim to
that title. It was recorded that Mary, Queen of Scott's

(24:11):
was once seen on the links playing golf. So if
you want to, if you want to take my word
for it, then you can. If not, then you obviously
need to visit and find out more about the history. Yes,
so where I'm sat now, I'm looking out towards the
fourth and across the Fife. Fife is obviously famous from
a golf point of view. But then if you come

(24:32):
back to our side, you're literally starting in the east
where the sun is rising Dunbar fantastic Lynks golf course,
all the way to the west which is where muster
broo Old is and heading towards Edinburgh. The variety of
links golf courses and the greatest concentration of championship links
golf courses in the world is in East Slothan.

Speaker 7 (24:55):
And you name it.

Speaker 9 (24:56):
From a tournament point of view, they've they've hosted it
again from a Muslim old point of view, the original
Open venue if you like, alongside Presswig and s Andrews
hosted the Open six times, Millfield's hosted it sixteen times,
so that's twenty two times it's hosted. East Lothian has
hosted the Open, and now of course you've got the

(25:18):
Scottish Open. And it's why the PJ Pros and the
roll Up Series and the DP World Tour players love
coming here because they get a fantastic golf course in
the renaissance and a newcomer on the block. But it's
established itself wonderfully on Scotland's golf coast. But then once
they've finished they can then go and play another golf
course and they do so. East Lothian is if you

(25:42):
look at the map of Scotland is Edinburgh and although
officially Edinburgh doesn't necessarily have a coast, it's the Edinburgh Coast,
so along the Firth and fourth out towards the North
Sea and then round the corner and down down the
coast of the North Sea into England what Scotland's golf
coast covers and from a Scotland's golf coast East Lothian perspective,

(26:06):
nearest Edinburgh is the Musselborough which is a parkland course,
and the Muslbur is about twenty five minutes outside of
the center of Edinburgh, and then you've got Muscleborough Old
Links there.

Speaker 7 (26:19):
And then the furthest east is Dunbar.

Speaker 9 (26:25):
The beauty of the twenty one courses in East Lothian
is that from the center of East Lothian, which is
where we are here, you've got them. The Muscleboro is
twenty minutes, Dunbar is twenty minutes north. Berica's fifteen minutes,
the center of Edinburgh's probably about forty minutes forty five minutes,
so I suppose the beauty of the region from an
accessibility point of view is Edinburgh Airport's forty five minutes

(26:50):
from here. All of the golf courses within East Lothian
are within twenty to twenty five minutes of each other.
And again the beauty of Scotland's golf coast is the
variet So yes, you've got the sixteen time open host
Millfield and top of the rankings North Berwick. But then
you've also got Winterfield, which is a public golf course

(27:10):
which you can play pay thirty pounds full. You can
play Gullen number three in March and April four fifty
pounds and then in the summer sixty five pounds. You
can then go to the Musclborough Olds and then you
can play one of the oldest, if not the oldest
golf course in the world for twenty five pounds. So

(27:31):
it's the variety. It's not just about the Boocketless golf courses.
It's about nine whole courses Musselborough Old and Gifford, It's
about the.

Speaker 7 (27:42):
Parkland courses, Royal Musclubrah.

Speaker 9 (27:45):
But yeah, what the message is there is there such
variety from a budget point of view, and experience point
of view and an ability point of view.

Speaker 2 (27:55):
I think a golf trip to Scotland. Take a look
at Scotland's Golf Coast. Twenty one golf courses, all within
twenty minutes for each other. This is the greatest concentration
of Championship links golf courses in the world. Scotland's Golf
Coast offers courses for all abilities from flagship courses Millfield
and North Berwick, must play courses Dunbar and Gullen, and

(28:17):
hidden gems including the Glen and Gifford. There's a wide
range of accommodation, many offerings stay and play golf packages
and with edam of just thirty minutes away, the area
provides everything for your golf trip. Check out the area
on Scotland's Golf Coast dot com.

Speaker 10 (28:35):
In East Lothian on Scotland's Golf Coast, Sitting proudly amongst
a plethora of golfing possibilities lies the small town Gullen
Gullen Golf Club. It's its front and center of the landscape,
with three classical links courses more visible from the main
road as you drive through the town. Record the golf

(29:00):
has been played on the lynxland of Gullen since sixteen
fifty on the number one course dates back to eighteen
eighty four, seven years prior to Mirefield opening on the
east side of town, though the identity of the original
architect has been lost. Gullen Gillen Gulan. The pronunciation of

(29:23):
Gullen changes based on who you ask, even what side
of the road you ask, but the etymology of Gullen
is unclear, possibly from the Scottish gallic gulane meaning shoulder,
and the hills of Gullen saw above the surrounding landscape,
fostering dramatic elevation changes and stunning views across the Firth
of Forth and beyond into Edinburgh, with Edinburgh Castle and

(29:47):
Arthur's Seat dominating the skyline across the Shamron the waters.
With three courses to choose from, Gullun Golf Club serves
up a delectable delight of golfing variety, with Gullum One
standing as the toughest test, hosting the Scottish Open in
twenty fifteen and again in twenty eighteen. All three courses

(30:12):
are maintained to the same exacting standards, showcasing the undulations
provided by the remnants of the volcanic plugs and the
smooth running greens for which Scotland's famous links courses are renowned.
Upon a gentle opening hole to Gullen One is quickly
hit with a challenging second hole which plays up the

(30:34):
ridge to a narrow green guarded by penal rough. During
the Scottish Open, this second hole for the members serves
as the opening hole of the round, reiterating to the
player what a tough test they will face throughout the day.
The third hole of Gullen is the first taste of
what outstanding vistas you will encounter as you progress through

(30:55):
the round. A downhill par five with the world open
ahead of you. The roller coaster of conditions as you
progress through the first three holes really are a signal
of what is to come. Gallon Hill rises above the
town of Gullon itself and the seventh t of Gullun
one is one of the highest points of Eastlothian. Indeed,

(31:18):
Bernard Darwin Road Gallon Hill, where the sun shining and
the wind blowing, the black clouds banked beyond the fourth
and just a glimpse of the distance of the mighty
tracery of the fourth bridge is one of the most
beautiful spots in the world. All round the golf course

(31:40):
you will see remnants of the country's past.

Speaker 6 (31:44):
Hey, welcome back to the golfing around radio hour. I'm
your host, Randy that tanked Tamtlinger. Hey, don't forget to
register to well log onto USA Scotland Golf dot com

(32:27):

Speaker 6 (32:31):
Sounds too good to be true, isn't it. Well this
is our fourth year. We've been doing it for a
while now, so get on board to train baby log
onto USA Scotland Golf dot com. Hey, speaking of Scotland,
I took last year's winners just a couple months ago.
Then I spent a week east of Edinburgh on Scotland's

(32:52):
Golf Coast, Scotland's golf Coast, twenty one golf courses. Incredible, amazing.
Our buddy Rich, Well, you get rich, you know Rich,
and I you know? I caddy for Rich is what
I do. I carry his clubs. I can't even carry
his water, but I can carry his clubs for them
on occasion. And Rich with golfing around. Talk to our

(33:17):
good buddy David with Scotland's Golf Coast. So let's listen
to Rich and David talk about well golf in Scotland.

Speaker 12 (33:26):
Guest is David Cockerton, who is the manager of the
Scotland Golf Coast. David, all the way from Scotland. Welcome
to the show.

Speaker 2 (33:37):
Hi, thatg good evening.

Speaker 12 (33:39):
It's great to have you tell me about your duties
as the manager of Scotland's Golf Coast.

Speaker 2 (33:48):
Well, Scotland's Golf Coast is a collection of businesses, the
golf courses, the accommodation businesses and everything to do with
golf and golf tourism. Here in East Lothian, which is
the area right next to Edinburgh, also known as Edinburgh's

(34:11):
Coast and countryside. We are fortunate in that we have
twenty one golf courses here, all within twenty to thirty
minutes of each other. That's twenty one golf course is
in a very very small area and we understand that
that is the greatest concentration of championship links golf courses

(34:34):
anywhere in the world.

Speaker 12 (34:36):
And name some of those courses, David, I'm sure some
of our listeners are familiar, but some may not be.

Speaker 2 (34:44):
Well, there's a number of courses that I'm sure your
listeners will be very familiar with, which includes Millfield and
North Berwick and of course the Renaissance where the Scottish
Open is to be held in a couple of weeks time.

Speaker 12 (35:05):
And your job as the manager is to put trips
together for folks, or just to make sure that they do.
They call you for tea times, I guess, and try
and get on some of these courses.

Speaker 1 (35:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (35:17):
So what we do is we pull the resources of
the golf clubs and the other businesses, particularly the hotels,
so to create as much market awareness as possible of
Scotland's golf coast. And then we take things to the
next stage, which is we do all the heavy lifting.

(35:38):
We do the hard work. We put the golf itineries together.
So we put packages together which include the tea times,
the accommodation, the transfers to and from airports and between
golf courses, even restaurant bookings. So yeah, we put the
complete package together for visitors.

Speaker 12 (35:57):
So when you talk to a group or a couple
that's coming over, do you kind of ask them what
kind of accommodations do you want, What kind of courses
do you want to play? What kind of restaurants do you.

Speaker 7 (36:11):
Want to go to?

Speaker 12 (36:11):
Because that kind of gives you a little bit of
freedom to kind of give them, you know, if they
want upper level, middle level.

Speaker 2 (36:20):
Yeah, I mean, I think that's the that's the great
benefit having the number of golf courses and the range
of accommodation businesses as well. So the more we can
understand about the traveler and what they're looking for, the
easier it is for us to put the right package together,
to create the right memories whilst people are here across

(36:42):
in Scotland.

Speaker 12 (36:44):
And what is a normal length of trip David? Is
it a week? Is it ten days? Is it two weeks?

Speaker 2 (36:53):
Well, what we find is that, particularly the US and
North American Mark, there's a lot of Scotland that people
want to cover, probably in a single trip. There's probably
too much to ever contemplate a single trip. But what
we like to create is, I suppose a part of

(37:15):
that trip, which normally turns out to be a three
or four nights stay here in East Lothian and picking
up an equal number of golf courses whilst here so
three or four nights and three or four golf courses
gives gives a good flavor of what we have to offer,
and that normally is a taster. People then say, hey,

(37:39):
this is something we want to come back to, and
that's say in fact what they do. And with those
twenty one courses to come and play. Quite often we
have returning guests to come and play the favorites from
the previous trips and then expand by adding an extra
one or two courses each time they come across. So

(38:01):
we're not going to get greedy. We're not going to
say come and spend the entire two weeks here. You can,
but yeah, spread, spread the spread the joy when you're
across here, spend some time here, but yeah, it's only
an hour and a half to Saint Andrews and other
destinations that golfers will want to to visit whilst they're here.

(38:21):
But create create some time in the itinerary for a
three or four nights stay and that will work very nicely.

Speaker 12 (38:29):
And so when you book a trip, you're going to
tell them if they're coming into to where you are
managing these golf courses, restaurants and places to stay you're
going to tell them to fly into Edinburgh.

Speaker 2 (38:40):
Edinburgh is definitely the closest and it's no more than
thirty to forty five minutes from the airport straight straight here,
so it's very very easy. So you know, if someone's
planning a longer trip in Scotland, then this is a
great place to start or possibly a great place to
finish before jumping back on the plane and heading back home.

Speaker 12 (39:04):
When my wife and I visited Edinburgh a couple of
years ago, we stayed for a couple of nights near
the airport, but then we went down where all the
restaurants are and it was just and the castle and
you know, the side streets. It was just fascinating to
be in Edinburgh and it was something that we both

(39:26):
said we wanted to come back and visit.

Speaker 2 (39:28):
Well, certainly as part of a trip here, you need
to spend a day in and around or even even
a couple of days in Edinburgh. It's a great it's
a great place to be, so much history, and it's
it's in a nice easily accessible package as well. You
know you're not you're not walking long distances. You can

(39:51):
see a lot of things from from the various advantage points.
You know, for example, the from the castle itself on
the on the imposing rock there you can see the
majority of the city center from there and then plan,
plan your route, plan your journey around. But yeah, great
restaurants in Edinburgh, lots of things to see and do,

(40:14):
and certainly through the summer months, it's got a got
a great bar, it's a great vibe, very very busy,
but that's that's what you want from a city center.

Speaker 12 (40:24):
And I think when you book these trips, if it's
all guys, then you know it's basically golf and a
place to stay, places to eat, get some adult beverages.
But if the wives come, that takes a different outlook
for I think where you would help them plan their trip,
maybe a day of sight seeing then a day of golf.

(40:46):
It just kind of depends, doesn't it.

Speaker 2 (40:48):
I Mean there's the sight seeing trips. There are spas
that I was going to say ladies can go to,
gents can go as well, shop trips, distillery tours, both
whiskey distilleries and gin distilleries. Yeah, it's it's all about
understanding a little bit about interests from travelers and putting

(41:12):
that package and that I tenery to get the forum.

Speaker 12 (41:15):
Whiskey tours have become very very popular. I mean not
only here in the States, but also as you go
to Scotland to Ireland. Have you found with trips that
that's become a bigger part of trips than it used
to be.

Speaker 2 (41:37):
I'll be honest. The real focus when when we have
people that are looking to come to Islath and the
real focuses on golf. Okay, got golf is at the
center of everything and anything the people are planning to do.
It's it's it's a great shame because there's so much

(41:58):
else that people can and do, but golf has to
come first.

Speaker 12 (42:04):
Well that kind of depends on the group and if
the wives are coming. But what's a normal size of
a group, David that you that you work with.

Speaker 2 (42:14):
Group sizes can can be can be single golfers, can be, couples,
can be groups of probably probably eight or twelve are
the normal sized groups and there and they're the the
easiest to also put the transport and transfer package together
as well, so it keeps keeps people together in an

(42:36):
executive coach rather than splitting the group up as well.
So and that's that's that's a great, great size for
the accommodation as well, because that means that the group
can quite often have exclusive occupation of some of some
of the properties that we we represent.

Speaker 12 (42:57):
David, over the course of a year, what are the
most popular times to go to Scotland to your area
to play golf, do trips so on.

Speaker 2 (43:11):
Well, the tremendous thing about East Lothian is we have
a great micro climate. Being on the east side of Scotland,
we don't have very much rain, so we're well known
for having the sunniest place in Scotland, which is Dumbar,
which also has two excellent golf courses, and we are

(43:35):
privileged in that we have all round golf. So actually
there is no reason why anybody can't travel twelve months
in the year, but it's fair to say that most
golfers are here between probably April and October, with May

(43:56):
and September being probably the two busiest months.
