(01:19):
Golfing Around Radio Hour. I'm yourhost, Randy the tank Tatlinger. Welcome
to another exciting episode of How toLose a golf Ball. So look,
go down to Walmart, get yourselfcheap set of them noodles. Golf ball
old noodle Ndleess says, get somenoodles. What's do is you go out
(01:48):
to the golf course there and youtee the ball real high in the air,
and you tell it you slug abeer down. Tell everybody, I've
seen John Daily do this, andyou scream, grip it and rip it,
and you send the old noodle ballabout one hundred and twenty yards looking
into the woods. There it bouncesoff a tree, hits a squirrel,
(02:13):
squirrel falls over, goes. Ithink that's how a squirrel would scream and
goes into a nearby pond. Thisis called golf. Hey, you're listening
to the golfing around radio hour.Hey, look, if you can't have
fun golfing, and if you can'thave fun listening to the golfing around radio
hour, I cannot help you.Okay, If you're one of these serious
(02:38):
people that takes golf way too seriously, then you're listening to the wrong show.
Cupcake. Please go find another radioshow to listen to. There's plenty
of them out there very akin tolistening to someone paint and listening to the
(02:59):
paint dry for an hour. Thatis not what golfing around is about.
So get ready to tee it upand grip it and rip it right down
the middle of the fairway this weekbecause we've got an exciting show for you.
We're gonna go over to well Nearand Dear to my heart, Ireland,
Ireland to golf and you know, was over in April. Had a
(03:22):
tremendous experience. I think this ismy sixth trip to Ireland and just love
everything about Ireland, not only thegolf, but the hospitality. As you
know, we have the Team USAVersus Team Ireland Amateur Golf Championships where amateurs
like you, no usg again, handicap required can win a trip to Ireland
(03:47):
to play for Team USA Versus TeamIreland Amateur Golf Championships. Log onto USA
Irelandgolf dot com, USA Ireland Golfdot com to learn more. So,
as they said, we were inthe Emerald out this past April, had
a tremendous experience. Everything about thetrip was just incredible. You know.
(04:12):
One of our favorite stops along theway was Klleen Castle k I L l
Ee and Castle. Google it.Colleen Castle about thirty minutes outside of Dublin
and Dublin for the you that aremathematically challenged. It is on the east
coast of Ireland. Pleasant drive overearly in the morning, well it actually
(04:41):
it was later afternoon when we gotthere. We'd gone down to the K
Club And if you don't know theK Club, you don't know you ride
a cup history because we got toplay the K Club earlier in the day
that hosted the Rider Cup back inthe day, and of course the K
Club is home to to Arnold PalmerCourses. Then we went over to the
beautiful, aspiring, majestic, magicalwith fairies. What did I tell you
(05:08):
about fairies running around? Yes,mystical Irish fairies messed with my camera equipment.
Kaleen Castle is just amazing. Itsnamesake, the Kaleen Castle was built
in the eleven hundreds, eleven andeighty one. I believe we're going to
talk to the head pro and directorof hospitality, which means funds, drinks
(05:31):
and laughs and guinnesses Cormick came outwith me on the golf course for the
Golfing Around TV show, which isbroadcast on massive mid Atlantic Sports Network Sunday
mornings at nine point thirty, andwe went out and we pounded the ball
around the course and I filmed thebeautiful, beautiful Jack Nicholas golf Course with
(05:54):
Cormick. The castle is the hallmarkof the property, the foundation, the
bedrock of the property. It stirsthe imagination to think back to eleven eighty
one again. If I'm off fora year or two, forgive me about
(06:15):
one. How they built the castlejust amazing. Secondly, just who's been
in the castle throughout the years.I mean who paid for it first to
get built, what laird, lordof the manor what night owned the land.
(06:36):
I do not know these things.I just know it is beautiful as
machiastic And soon within the next severalyears. When we talked to Karen Collins
here a little bit later in thissegment, she's going to tell you how
about the Colleen Castle, just outsideof Dublin is being completely gutted and renovated.
She took us on a wonderful tourendside, and soon it will be
(07:00):
home to a beautiful, beautiful hotelwithin the confines of the Kaleen Castle.
But the Jack Nicholas signature course hereat Kleeen Castle's what you've come for,
at least to this episode of theGolfing Around. They've got this incredible statue
of Jack on the first tee toguide you down the fairway. It is
(07:26):
remarkable. I think it stands aboutten feet tall. We took the Team
USA picture in front of the Kleenstatue of Jack Nicholas and it's right there
on my wall right now I'm lookingat it. It's very special, and
whole number one is very special aswell. As you head down the fairway
(07:46):
to the left and it's not therefor eye candy. Is this massive,
massive fairway bunker trap area that isthe hallmark of the course, besides the
Khaleen Castle itself a shamrock, amassive should ask Cormick how big it was
(08:09):
yardage wise, I don't know.Forty yards by forty yards four leaf clover
in the middle of the bunker,in the middle of the fairway and it
does catch balls. It's not justthere for eye candy. And that's how
you begin your glorious round at theklean Castle. Hole number one, the
t box shot with a Jack Nicholasstatue behind you. The ancient castle of
(08:35):
Khaleen Castle, watching sentinel over thewhole property. And what a wonderful way
to begin this wonderful journey on thiswonderful Nicholas Parkland course. Let's go ahead
back to Ireland now in April andlisten to Cormick and I on the first
(08:56):
tee with the castle behind us atKhalil Castle just outside of Dublin, Ireland.
All right, well, nobody betterthan the director of golf and hospital
hospitality. Well how can you not. It's Ireland. Golf and hospitality go
(09:16):
together. Yeah right. You gottahave your golf ball, you gotta have
your Guinness, you gotta have yourgolf ball, you gotta have your Jamison.
See how they don't go linked? They do? Can I work for
you anytime? I think I can? I think I can. You know
the ancient Kleeen Castle behind me wasbuilt in eleven eighty one, originally eleven
eighty one. Come back a fewyears, a bit, a bit,
(09:39):
a couple of years before you runit. Yeah, just a bit talking
about ancient not only me but thecastle as well. Let's get to the
good stuff. Let's get to JackNicholas, his statue behind us. I'm
a Jack fan. I love whathe does on a course, tends to
leave it a little bit open. Then what I've always seen is he puts
you to work on The green complexis still true today, pretty similar out
(10:03):
here. So he's always got apretty fair design off the tee. Let's
he get away and when he wasopening here in twenty eight he did say
it was probably one of the toughestsecond shot golf courses he designs. So
it's pretty typical of a Nicholas signaturecourse. Fair off the tee, deep
bunkers, underlaying greens, tough, challenging golf course, but there's a tea
for everybody, and there's a golfshop for everybody out here. Yeah,
(10:24):
very much. So okay, soof course you've got Jack and signature holes.
Signature holes here at clean Castle. You probably have to whittle it down
from eighteen to a select four, which is difficult. The castle of course
behind us adds well the ambiance toeverything, but it is the green complexes.
(10:46):
It is the poorch bunkers that makeeverything well worthwhile. What are signature
holes. It's really hard to narrowit down to a feud. There's eighteen
great golf holes out here, andour first solo is a really good starting
and open hole. We've got ourshammerck bunker down the left hand side that
challenges everybody to get over it,and that's a really good opener. Eighteen
(11:07):
is obviously just iconic coming up tofinish up in front of the eight hundred
and forty year old castle. Twelveis my personal favorite. It's a par
five over reclaimed stone of a fairytree on a beautiful golf hole. A
fairy tree. What in the worldis a fairy tree? Not a cherry
tree. A fairy tree. Afairy tree is. It's got a home
in old Irish mythology and as itgoes, fairy tree is not to be
(11:30):
touched or damage or it brings alifetime of bad luck. So Jack is
idears is only the golf hole. There's a small fairy tree set just about
thirty yards short of the green. He's sitting out said, it's a whole
looks great shaping. It's going, well, gotta lose the tree, guys.
We got to get rid of thattree. And everyone around is in
Jack. It's a fairy tree. It's a lifetime of bad luck. It
said gotta move the tree. Ijust gotta go. It doesn't fit.
(11:52):
So the set of keys we're handledup to. Jack. If you want
to move that tree, be myguest, right, And I take it
he did not sensitive. Yeah,I'm not messing around with a faerry tree
by any means. My backswing isbad enough. I don't need fairies cursing
it. Hey, let's go outon the beautiful Kaleen Castle golf course right
now, and I want you towell experience the hospitality, the flavor of
(12:16):
Ireland and discover what makes well Irelandso beautiful. You kind of cute yourself.
How hard can it be to sellsomething like Killeen Castle. I mean
(12:37):
it's beautiful. Jack Nicholas has beenhere, he designed it. You have
a castle castle. You got fairiesabout who keep messing with my camera equipment.
It's very special here at Killeen Castle. Yeah. Right. So when
people want to come here, whydo they come here? Because they want
to play a hidden gem, Theywant to play a trophy course, they
(12:58):
want to play a book list course. And that is what Colleen Castle offers.
We offer a unique and memorable golfexperience. It's championship park then golf
course and a Jack Nicholas signature course. So what's not to love about Killeen
Castle. Pedigrees and golf go along way. So we have a Jack
(13:18):
Nicholas design golf course. When youtalk about tournaments, events like the Solheim
Cup have been played at Killeen Castle, that ups the pedigree, Oh,
it absolutely does. So we hostedit in twenty eleven. Europe won that
year as well, which was alovely edition. But Killeen Castle was actually
(13:39):
chosen as a venue for the twentyeleven Cell Hand Cup before construction had even
been completed, so that was testamentto the product, to the championship golf
course that that was going to beshowcased to host an international pedigree tournament like
the Solheim Cup. So that saysa lot about the quality of the course,
(14:01):
the condition of the golf course, the playability of the golf course.
So in addition to the Slheim Cup, we've hosted Irish Opens, PGA events,
wow, and we're looking forward tohosting the Challenge Tour in twenty twenty
five which was just announced. Sothat's a major coup and that's the next
stage two. Hosting another big Openyet to be annext watch this space,
(14:28):
Randy. I love it. Ilove it, you know. And that's
the thing. They're not stuck inthe past. While in the eleventh century
hearing Klleen Castle by any means makingimprovements, making improvements all around the property
constantly. You know, the castle'sbeen here since the eleven hundreds. But
guess what down the road you yourselfcan come to Kleean Castle in Ireland and
(14:50):
guess what you could be a nightor a damsel in distress and stay in
the beautiful castle. That is theplan. That's there's the all has been
the vision of the owners of KilleenCastle. It's a six hundred acre estate
with that magnificent twelfth century castle, you know, which can be seen from
every golf full so it's very veryspecial. We're very very proud of the
(15:13):
product. But that castle in twentytwenty seven, please God, will be
a forty three bedroom accommodation. Sowe're developing the estate. We are going
to have a spa in Q twoof twenty twenty five. There's a magnificent
wooded trail around the whole estate,so we're enhancing the already magnificent golf product.
(15:35):
And we're just adding to that,so you know, exciting times ahead.
It's important. You don't even haveto wait till twenty twenty seven.
Currently they're well, they're accommodation, luxury accommodations here at Klean Castle. Yeah,
so we built six four bedroom lodgeswhich opened in July of twenty twenty
three. Very exciting addition to thegolf course and to the estate being frequented
(16:00):
by golf groups, but not onlygolf groups, by people who are coming
to Ireland's agent Eese, which youare right in the heart of the Boyne
Valley, which has so much tooffer in terms of activities outside of golf.
So we have families, we havestay in play packages obviously for golfers,
but also people who just want tocome and visit the area, use
(16:21):
it as a base for thirty minutesfrom the airport, thirty minutes from the
city center and to enjoy this magnificentscenery in wildlife and peace and tranquility.

badminton is one of the great I'mjoking. I haven't played badminton since nineteen

seventy six. Probably football, baby, lay some up, strap them up,
put your mouthpiece in, get yourbull neck guard ready because football season
is right around the corner. Andman, we're talking Steelers Panther football this
year. You know, Tanker, former left bench superstar at the University of
(34:15):
Pittsburgh. Left bench. It's myposition. Man. Maybe one day they'll
retire my jersey number thirty. I'llbe down there with the greats of the
game. Bill Freleik, jimbo Covert, you know, all the greats.
Hugh Green, who's that guy numberthirty up there in the rafters. Oh,
(34:36):
that's the greatest left bencher we everhad it. Bit. So,
you know, football season is rightaround the corner, and looking forward to

great. It's got a magnetic backto it. It sticks on your golf
cart, sticks underneath your beer can, wherever you want it. But it's
a sound quality that makes it sogreat. It's like a three hundred and
sixty degree speaker on top and it'sa quality speaker. They're really affordable too,
(35:46):
I think if you get on Amazonor Walmart. They're twenty bucks.
Twenty bucks. So check out thelittle speaker at L I D D L
E Speaker dot com. Little Speakerdot Com. It's really cool because it
like pops on the back of yourcell phone. Let's say you're sitting out
(36:07):
at your cabin or wherever listening toJimmy Buffett and like you can prop up
the cell phone and the speaker propsit up and you get great tunes.
So there is a lot of soundcoming out of a little L I D
D L E speaker. All right, So my buddy, who is gonna
(36:27):
go on name was using it lookedlike a Paris telescope from eighteen thirty two,
No. Thirteen, sixteen thirty two, when s Columbus did not scale
the ocean blues or nothing like that. I mean he was using this antiquated.
(36:49):
If you don't know the word antiquated, look it up. Fancy word
for old, old somebody. Basically, what my buddy was using look like
a telescope from sixteen to thirty two, the days of Columbus. That's all
it was. It was a telescope. That's not what you want to play
(37:12):
modern golf, especially if you're ahigh hacker like I am. You know
shot Scope, shot Scope check themout at shotscope dot Com has been making
the that's you know, that's whatthey do. They make a range finders.
And I tell you what the shotScope pro ZR. I played with

it a couple of weeks ago. It's a game changer. It is cutting
edge technology as far as range findersgo. It's fast, the distances are
accurate. I mean it's up tofifteen hundred yard distance range. I mean
that's army sniper distance. Army sniperdistance fifteen one hundred yards. I guess
(38:01):
you could scope in to see howyour buddy's doing are in a tournament.
It is really accurate. It lockson the target immediately, rapid fire detection
immediately, no playing and wasted.Look when my buddy was using the Seaman's
telescope, the old Navy's telescope fromfourteen thirty three, it took forever.
(38:27):
I bet he was adding twenty minutestar around and it was absolutely hilarious.
I'd call out, yeah, it'sone forty seven. He'd bring this thing
out and this and that, andthen it's same one forty seven. No
kid, and I eyed that upand the worst part. And I never
said this to him. He'd gothrough the whole rudiments of picking his club
(38:50):
one forty seven club, I don'tknow, call whatever you want, the
night Iron. He'd either come upshort or push it left. And this
went on every whole driving me nuts, driving me nuts. I'm gonna send
him. I'm not buying him ashot Scope proz R, but I'll give
him the website, like I'm gonnagive you ww dot shot scope dot com.

constitions, whether it's raining, whetheryou drop it. They're built to perform
whenever you play, even if thelighting is low. Maybe your dust Sunday
evening player like I am, whichis my favorite time, get a bottle
of white wine, go out tothe golf carse course and lose balls.
Sun's going down the prozr by shotScope on failure. Man, it is

really adaptable to sunlight conditions and lightingconditions. Ultra clear LCD display at six
times magnification total clarity on a golfcourse accurate T one yard. That's what
they claim, and I'm telling youwhat that's what it does. It is

I got upset anyway, Plus boxingfootball, my right hand's a mess.
(44:30):
It's really weak. Superstroke putter gripshelp my putting because I'm in charge.
It's a nice thick grip. Itwould be like putting with a stick,
