(00:50):
on how we see our country andourselves. These hallowed battlefields, legendary landmarks,
and powerful memorials tell our story likenowhere else can. As a profound,
inspired personal experience. There has neverbeen a better, more meaningful time
to visit Gettysburg. Gettysburg, Pennsylvaniafor the people. Just take a look

(01:17):
at what he says he is,and take a look at what he is.
Look I'd be happy to have adriving contest with him. I reama
I got my handicap, which whenI was Vice president down to a six.
And by, by the way Itold you before, I'm happy to
play golf. If you carry yourown bag, I think you can do
it. That's the biggest live Andhe's a six handicap of all. I

(01:40):
was an eight handicap. Eight,But I have you know how many I've
seen this wing? I know youwing a President Trump. Let's not act
like children. Hello and welcome tothe Golfing Around Radio Hour. Hey,

(02:22):

You guys like my buddy Dom whohave a golf sickness. Yes it is
a sickness. Uh. You loveevery gadget. You love every new toy
that comes along. You gotta haveit. You gotta try it, you
gotta wear it, you gotta eatit, you gotta drink it, you

(02:44):
gotta listen to it. If ithelps your golf game, you gotta you
gotta have it. We'll be doingsome equipment reviews in segment number two,
and you're gonna love it. Sohear those two guys you're arguing about their
handy caps. That was recorded atOakmont Country Club last Saturday at the member

(03:06):
guest event where two of the membersat Oakmont got no. If you don't
know what that's from. It wasround one of Biden versus Trump Thursday evening.
It got down into the nitty gritty, not national security, not the
state of the economy, but theall important handicap. Yes, that's right,

(03:30):
the all important handicap. Because I'mbetter than you. Know, you're
better than me. Now I sawyou kick that ball underneath it from that
tree. I'm better than you. You're better than me. Now I got
a twenty No, I'm a twentytwo. No, I'm a fourteen.
All right, let's take it tothe course. Well, I get eight
strokes, I'm not giving you eightstrokes aside, No I need eight strokes,

(03:54):
oh ho, and on and on. Uh, if you're a golfer,
Uh, that was very enjoyable toyou to hear. Well, look
any any uh, any conversation thatadvances participation in the great game of golf.
I'm for especially on the world stage. Uh. Between the two candidates

(04:18):
Biden and Trump. No, I'ma six, I'm a four. Listen,
I got club championships. The onlything you got is a club foot,
was heard to be spoken into acutoff microphone and it went on.
Anyway, this is some of thebest part of the summer as we as

(04:41):
we get really grinding into the summertimebecause it is tournament time. It is
the time of year that championships areone, championships are lost. And let's
steal it little bit of revisiting theUS Open because it was so good this

(05:10):
year between well Rory and you knowthe guy that won, Rycian Day Chambeau.
Don't think I'm an idiot. Don'tyou think I'm an idiot? For
aacman, it really was a greatexperience all the way around this year's US
Open, as Rory as Bryson wentat it. I mean literally, have

(05:39):
you ever seen yipes as bad asRory? I mean that was pretty bad.
It was pretty bad. There wasa golfer during the nineteen seventies and

(06:00):
his misfortune led to a scream thatused to go around golf courses all the
time of hit it, Alice. You know, if a guy did what
Rory did, he hit it Alice. It's an amazing story from years ago

(06:23):
that in the nineteen sixty three RyderCrap, a member of the European team,
was playing against Arnold Palmer and insome point in the match, Ellis,
to whom putting was not a strongsuit, badly missed a three foot
pit putt and it sounded Ellis right, Alice ready, and he missed the

(06:49):
three footer, and someone in thegallery yelled out, nice putt, Alice,
and the rest is history. Niceputt, Alice is what it morphed
into. Is what it morphed into. If you want to degrade somebody that

(07:12):
misses a three inch putt similar toRory, you would say, nice putt,
Alice, very much funny, verymuch funny. You know later on
Alice it was a really good bloke, a great guy on the European Tour.
If you ever saw the movie withSean Connery gold Finger, he's giving

(07:36):
Alice is giving a golf lesson toSean Connery. So the next time you
hear hit It Alice, remember thatthis is a story that dates back to
the nineteen sixty three Ryder Cup whenPeter Alice was playing Arnold Palmer and during
the Ryder Cup, Alice missed athree foot putt. Missed that three foot

(08:00):
putt which afterwards the BBC interviewed himand he explained the myss by something And
I was never renowned for my putting, so I was an easy target for
all manner of British comedy programs andinsults. So nice pot, Alice,
birth from the nineteen sixty three RiderCup. Nice pot right from three inches.

(08:26):
But look, it was a glorious, glorious US Open there at Pinehurst.
It really was. It was spectacular. But we've got some great local
golf happening in the well, thewestern Pennsylvania, Ohio area this summer.
Where golfing around well, this isthe Bunker, and I mean pot Bunker

(08:48):
where I do the show from everyweek you can listen to golfing around radio
hour on the iHeart Podcast Network anytimeanyplace all over the if you're in South
Africa, if you're in Brazil,if you're in Canada, if you're in

here Ian Wheeling, keep those cardsand letters coming coming you more ons you.
No, I appreciate everybody listens tothe show. I do know we
have a fan base that listens,so we appreciate that. Greg Boomer and

(10:22):
Corey there at Fox Sports Wheeling,Pittsburgh. iHeart make the show go,
they really do. I just babblelike a you have area squirrel in the
backyard when it finds a nut,it's all excited, goes nuts, four
nuts. That's all I do.It is Craig Boomer, station manager,

(10:45):
and Corey are our wonderful technician thatkeep both Steelers chok talk in the fall
coming to you and golfing around. You know, if you're in the Pittsburgh
area, you know of the FoxChapel Country Club. It is an amazing
course. I was over there acouple of years ago. They just did

(11:07):
a redesign on the Fox Chapel GolfCourse. It will host the US Senior
Women's Open Championship August first through fourth. August first through fourth here in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania. The USGA's US Senior Women'sGolf Championship at the Fox Chapel Golf

(11:30):
Club. Get tickets and go.First of all, if you've never stood
on the hollow grounds of Fox ChapelGolf Club. It's unbelievable. We're going
to talk about it. I playedit a couple of years ago. Alexapro
over there did a great interview withhim. We're gonna play that here in
a second. Go get tickets. If you want to see some of the

(11:52):
best golf here in Pittsburgh, goto the US Senior Women's Open Golf Championships
August first through fourth. I betthe legend herself, Carol Simple Thompson will
be there. Okay, don't missthis. Don't miss this event. It's
gonna be incredible. So let's hearfrom Alex the head pro over there Fox

(12:16):
Chapel, and talk about the redesigns, the tweaks they did to the Telly
House golf course at Fox Chapel CountryClub. Teth Rayner Seth Rayner designed over
seventy golf courses. It might beup to about seventy seven. Sort of
an unknown figure. He's the protegeof Charles Blair MacDonald, who's self proclaimed

(12:41):
the godfather of architecture in the UnitedStates Golf. I found in the nineteen
sixty two US Open magazine at Oakmontevery club's listed in western Pennsylvania because they
supported Oakmont and having the Open. They had volunteers, so everyone got a
script about each club and what theclub does and why it's there, and

(13:03):
what's the history. Well, ourshas the regular history seth Rainer design,
Charles McDonald, etc. Etc.And then the last paragraph is the superintendent
and golf pro Paul E. Rathremoved all the deep side, deep greenside
bunkers and fairway traps. And it'sthe only documentation I can find where there's

(13:24):
someone stating they tried to eliminate somethingon the golf course. Twenty twelve through
twenty fourteen Senior Players Championship on theChampions Tour, and that really started putting
the golf course, so to speak, on the map where all these excellent
players were. Really Their architect historyis very good. Ben Crenshaw, Tom

(13:50):
Watson, Tom Kite, they're allin architecture after they've played, and so
they really had some great things tosay about the layout. And we would
always hear that there's a lot ofgood bones, a lot of good bones
to the course. So you couldtell where bunkers could have been, might
have been, how the design wasand going back to twenty fourteen or fifteen,

(14:15):
the club was looking at redoing thebunkers just because of the wear and
tear, and that initiated a masterplan, and so the club elected to
hire Fasio Design to do the masterplan, and that included new Te's forward,
new Te's back, bunkers, replacedbunkers, moved bunkers, taken out

(14:37):
green expansion, et cetera. Andso in twenty sixteen they started the tea
project. We've added to that projector done that this year as well as
the bunkers. That's sort of anongoing program. We have other bunkers that
we would re level, We havesome bunkers that we would add if we
were choosing to. And so we'rein the middle or moving towards the end

(15:00):
of a process where the golf coursehas been restored and now you're sort of
updating it in the current design withall of these new bunkers and teas and
making it a little bit more interestingfor the player. So we had some
interesting this is actually somewhat noteworthy basedon what I said about the aerials.

(15:24):
We have some interesting what I willcall template holes, but they're familiar holes
to all the golf around the world. Number four is a road hole,
which was not a road hole untilthis year. It's actually a reverse road
hole. The road bunker is onthe right hand side of the green.
We have the two road bunkers alongthe sides on the left, and we

(15:48):
have the spectacle bunker out on theright side of the fairway. That's noteworthy
because most of the golf holes thatare replicas of the seventeenth old Saint Andrews
the bunker is the road bunker ison the left hand side, so it's
a little bit unique that we haveone on the right. It goes along
with number six as a reverse ordant. It's one of the more noteworthy

(16:11):
par threes in the country, butours goes from left to right instead of
right to left, So there's somethingbehind that meeting when he designed number four
as well to put the bunker onthat side, which is which is very
exciting to play in that way.We redid the green on four to kind

(16:33):
of create a ra dance style sothat the ball would sort of run towards
that road bunker, kind of asyou see on seventeen with the road behind
and then the bunker on the left, and then we have number nine,
which is a I think the holefrom Saint Andrews is number fourteen. It's
high hole, I think is thename, but don't quote me. And

(16:55):
it's been used as the lion's mouth. There are not many lions mouths left
in the Reiner design. The clubtook it out in the fifties. It's
a bunker recessed in the green. So we actually found the original bunker.
It was about two or three feetdeeper than we've made it, but it

(17:17):
also had some topography a little bitdifferent of the time where it was a
little bit more slanted, a lotmore unused green to play from. So
the Fazzio Tom Marsov the architect, along with the superintendent Jason Hurwitz, it
made more sense to make it alittle bit more level with that bunker in
the in the front of the green. That's another iconic hole that you don't

(17:41):
see very much. And then thebiggest or the most changed hole that we
have is number sixteen, and it'sactually called the Bottle. It's the fourteenth,
twelfth or fourteenth holl at Sunningdale, and the Bottle has three bunkers running
diagonally through the fairway, with fourbunkers on the right it's right behind you,

(18:02):
and three bunkers on the left.We don't have a principal nose bunker,
but we have a cross bunker infront of the green. Welcome back
to the Golfing Around Radio. I'myour host, Randy tank Tantlinger here every
Saturday morning at ten am or anytime. It could be two thirty in the
morning in Iceland, because I knowmy buddy Abby in Iceland. Believe it

(18:26):
or not, I got a friendnamed Abby in Iceland, and he listens
as a Golfing Around radio show. He's a big fan up there, especially
in the winter months. He hasnothing else to do, and he listens
to us on the iHeart podcast network. I can't even tell you how honored
we are that iHeart puts us onthe podcast network so you can listen to

(18:48):
Golfing Around really whenever you want tobe entertained by my nonsense. Then,
of course we transition into badminton season. You know, badminton is the great
I'm joking. I haven't played badmintonsince nineteen seventy six. Probably football,
baby. Lace them up, strapthem up, put your mouthpiece in,

(19:14):
get your bull neck guard ready becausefootball season is right around the corner.
And man, we're talking Steelers Pantherfootball this year. You know, Tanker,
former left bench superstar at the Universityof Pittsburgh. Left bench it's my
position. Man. Maybe one daythey'll retire my jersey number thirty. I'll
be down there with the greats ofthe game, Bill Freleik, Jimbo Covert,

(19:40):
you know, all the greats.Hugh Green. Who's that guy number
thirty up there in the rafters.Oh, that's the greatest left bencher we
ever had it. Bit. So, you know, football season is right
around the corner, and looking forwardto that to see how both the Panthers
and Steelers do this year. Hey, it's we're gonna do some equipment reviews.

(20:00):
Now, it's the golfing around equipmentreviews segment. You know, there's
a lot of great golf products outthere that can improve your game. And
you know, like the Little Speaker, the Little Speaker, the Little Speaker
l I D D L E.If you like your tunes on a golf

(20:22):
course, go buy one of these. First of all, it's little,
that's why it's called a little golfspeaker. Actually, you can take it
anywhere. We took it up toConnyeat Lake, which is here in Pennsylvania
a couple of weeks ago. It'sgreat. It's got a magnetic back to
it. It sticks on your golfcart, sticks underneath your beer can,

(20:44):
wherever you want it. But it'sa sound quality that makes it so great.
It's like a three hundred and sixtydegree speaker on top, and it's
a quality speaker. They're really affordabletoo. I think if you get on
Amazon or Walmart, they're twenty buckstwenty bucks, So check out the little
Speaker at l I D D LE Speaker dot com. Little Speaker dot

(21:11):
com. It's really cool because itlike pops on the back of your cell
phone. Let's say you're sitting outat your cabin or wherever listening to Jimmy
Buffett, and like you can propup the cell phone and the speaker props
it up and you get great tunes. So there is a lot of sound

(21:32):
coming out of the Little L ID D L E Speaker. All right,
So my buddy, who is gonnago on name, was using it
looked like a Paris telescope. Fromeighteen thirty two No. Thirteen sixteen thirty
two when Sclumbus did not scale theocean blues or nothing like that. I

(21:56):
mean he was using this aniquated. If you don't know the word aniquated,
look it up. It fancy wordfor old, old somebody. Basically,
what my buddy was using was lookedlike a telescope from sixteen to thirty two,
the days of Columbus. That's allit was. It was a telescope.

(22:22):
That's not what you want to playmodern golf, especially if you're a
high hacker like I am. Youknow shot Scope, shot Scope check them
out at Shotscope dot Com has beenmaking the that's you know, that's what
they do. They make a rangefinders. And I tell you what the
shot Scope pro Zr. I playedwith it a couple of weeks ago.

(22:47):
It's a game changer. It iscutting edge technology as far as range finders
go. It's fast, the distancesare accurate. I'm I mean it's up
to fifteen hundred yard distance range.I mean that's army sniper distance. Army

(23:08):
sniper distance fifteen hundred yards. Iguess you could scope in to see how
your buddy's doing are in a tournament. It is really accurate. It locks
on the target immediately, rapid firedetection immediately, no playing and wasted.

(23:29):
Look when my buddy was using theseamen's telescope, the old Navy's telescope from
fourteen thirty three, it took forever. I bet he was adding twenty minute
star around and it was absolutely hilarious. I'd call out, yeah, it's
one forty seven. He'd bring thisthing out and this and that, and
then at same one forty seven,No kid, and I eyed that up.

(23:55):
And the worst part, and Inever said this to him, he'd
go through the whole rudiments of pickinghis club one for seven club, I
don't know, call it whatever youwant of nine iron. He'd either come
up short or push it left. And this went on every hole, driving
me nuts, driving me nuts.I'm gonna send him. I'm not buying

(24:17):
him a shot Scope proz R,but I'll give him the website, like
I'm gonna give you ww dot shotscope dot com. Look here's the other
thing. Did you ever drop one? Yeah, and you're terrified? Could
you just spend one hundred dollars? Not with the shot Scope proz or.
You don't gotta worry. It's dirtshell hard shell design. How do you

(24:41):
like that? Dirt shell? Hardshell design can handle harsh constitions, whether
it's raining, whether you drop it. They're built to perform whenever you play,
even if the lighting is low.Maybe your dust Sunday evening player like
which is my favorite time, geta bottle of white wine, go out

clarity on a golf course accurate toone yard. That's what they claim,

(25:30):

I want to talk now about Well, this is our third year for the

(32:27):
Team Lesa versus Team Scotland Amateur GolfChampionships. Third year, Boy, how
quick it's gone. And I wantto thank the guys here at Fox Sports
Radio, Greg Boomer, and ofcourse my old buddy up there at the
Wheeling Country Club, Rich Gunwell fortaking a shot with us a couple of
years ago. It is not easybuilding something from the ground up. You

because people around you help you.And both Rich and Greg I know you

So Conwell, I will be backto Wheeling Country Club to disturb you at

is a wonderful golf course right herein Wheeling, West Virginia. Just a

(34:07):
year for the Team USA versus TeamScotland Amateur Golf Championships. So Tank Scotland,
I like what you're talking about.Well, what is it? Well,
let me tell you what it is. So first of all, you
do not need an official USGA handicapto play in our events for a chance

(34:30):
to win a trip to St.Andrews, Scotland. Again, you do
not need a USGA handicap. Whatwe do is we have five flights.
Five flights one to five, sixto eleven, six to ten, I
mean eleven to fifteen, sixteen totwenty and twenty one and over. You

(34:51):
get the idea, right, Soask yourself, all right, I'm a
thirteen and I ain't got no USGAhand cap. That's fine, Okay,
Well, we will put you inthe ten to fifteen flight at the Team
USA National Championships in Gettysburg August tenthand eleventh at the Carroll Valley Resort golf

(35:15):
Course at the Liberty Mountain Resort inGettysburg. You'll play two competitive rounds Saturday,
August tenth Sunday August eleventh. You'llplay other golfers in your flight of
ten to fifteen. It's really simple. If you shoot within your flight.

(35:38):
Let's say you get hot and youshoot a ten, maybe you win your
flight. You win a trip toSaint Andrews in twenty twenty five. To
be a member of Team USA ifyou shoot above your flight, shoot a
seventeen, guess what you're dq'ed fromthe competition? All right, how will

(35:59):
you samdbagging if we don't ask fora USGA handicap. Let's say you think
you're slick. Well, I'm athirteen handicap. Uh huh, Well I
got hot over the two days.I actually shot at a seven. Well,
