Guardians continue their pursuit of a postseason birth and perhaps

(01:13):
after their big week in Detroit, an American League Central
Division title. We'll see, but everything pointing in such a
positive direction for quite some time now for the Guardians,
who are on an eight game winning streak, and they've
also won thirteen of fourteen. More on that in our
weekend review shortly, but coming up a little bit later
on in our show, we'll hear from Stephen Kwan, Guardians

(01:37):

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Welcome back. It's Guardians Weekly, Tim Ros and House along
with you from Minneapolis, where the Guardians are taking on
the Twins this weekend. And what a week it has
been as Cleveland continues to remain red hot here in
the month of September at the best possible time to
try and salvage a postseason berth, and they got it
going with a big series against the Tigers that started

(03:11):
on Tuesday night in Detroit after Monday's off day, and
the Guardians will get the scoring started. In the second inning,
after two outs, Nolan Jones doubled and then Cjkaphus stepped in.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
The pits, a swing and a liner the right drops
for a base in Jones coming around third the throat
of the plate. He scores standing throw a little up
the first base line and CJ. Caphus with an RBI
single and Cleveland tanks the early one nothing lead a
line drive that dropped right in front of Perez in

(03:45):
right field and Nolan Jones able to score from second.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Detroit tied it on a Glabor torre As home run
in the third, but in the fourth, Gabrielarius answered with
a home run of his own. Arius swings and drives
one high and.

Speaker 6 (04:01):
Deep right field, way back gone, home run Gabrielarius and
the Guardians retake the lead on home run number eleven
for Arius. He crushed it to a spot where he
likes to go, and that's to the opposite field and
smoked it into those lower stands in right. In the six,

(04:24):
the first two Cleveland hitters reached, setting the table for
hot hitting bow Naylor the sent.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
And delivery swing in line, deep right field, one hop
and up against the wall. Ramirez scores Manzardo in the third,
Nailer a stand up armyhind double and Cleveland now with
a three to one lead. And bow Naylor what a
good series this past weekend against the White Sox has

(04:51):
his twentieth double thirty six run spanned.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
In Detroit scored a run in the bottom of the
sixth inning to make it a one run game at
three to two. Tim Herron and Hunter Gaddis shut down
the Tigers in the seventh and eighth innings, then Kate
Smith retired the first two hitters in the ninth and
the last hope for Detroit was a sudden Guardians' nemesis
from last season. Carrie Carpenter the.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Set and delivery swung on, hammered high and deep to center,
Martine's back track wall, tie game, Carrie Carpenter with a
bomb to center off the bench, and we've got a
three three ball game.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Onto extra innings they went. Guardians responded in a big way.
Top of the tenth Brian Rochio the runner at second
and Stephen Kuan leading things off.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
The set and the one swung on grand ball base
sit inside the bag at first, down the right field line,
headed toward the corner. This could be three in the
scores Rochio Kwan will stomp a second.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
Next man up was on hell Martinez.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
Now the one two swung on line drive toward the
gamp left center. It'll get down for a base hit.
It'll roll to the wall. Kwan will score Martinez around second.
He's going for three. The throw head first slide hits
a triple and the Guardians have a five to three lead.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
And then Jose Ramirez.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Vest the pitch a swing and a ball slice to
left and deep down the line, fare ball. Rick Cochet's
on a play ground rule double. Martinez will score and
Jose Ramirez, with the third consecutive extra base hit off
will vest cale.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Manzardo kept the hip parade going with a double that
put runners at second and third for Gabriel Arius. The
next offering swung on broken bat flare toward right near
the line, fair ball. It drops in to score Ramirez
on his way to second.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Izarius is The throw comes to home, with Manzardo stopping
at third, and the Guardians have now taken a seven
to three lead.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
What an inning for the Guardians, and it had to
be because the Detroit did not quit. Spencer Torkelsen smacked
a two run home run to cut the Guardians lead
to seven to five, and it was up to Jacob
Junis to try and slam the door.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
The pitch from Junas to Sweeney and he sends a
line drive straightaway center. Martinez makes the catch. Ball game
and a big win for Cleveland, the first of six
against Detroit in the next week and a half, and
the Guardians win their fifth straight. They're now eleven and

(07:45):
two over the last two weeks, so a big win
to get the series in Detroit started for the Guardians
on Tuesday night. Could they keep it going and really
start to put the pressure on the Tigers Well, Wednesday
night it was another strong dart, this time from Gavin
Williams and the Guardians would get him a lead in
the third inning. With a couple of men on and

(08:06):
George Valeras standing in the one oer swung on drill
the left, there's a acient that is going to score.
Cjkaphus stopping at second is Kwan and a good at
bat for George Valero.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
They added on in the sixth inning, after a double
from Arius on El Martinez delivered.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Now the O one swung on line drive right field
base hit Martinez into scores Arius boy Gabriel. Arius would
add one out, doubles, stole third and scores on the
pinch at RBI single to right byon Hill Martinez.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Detroit threatened in the seventh with two men on and
just one out, and it was Eric Sabrowski out of
the Guardian's bullpen trying to get out of the gym
thirty four thousand waiting to roar. But a quartete Cleveland
pitchers blanking Detroit. This is a massive pitch here on
two and one. Here it comes swung on, smashed.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
The third, Ramirez to his knees fields, it gets up,
throws over, ending over.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
With Hunter Gatis needing a night off. Jacob Junas got
the call in the eighth, three to one, socked high
in the air to right toward the line medium deep.
Nolan Jones makes the catch and foul territory. Jacob Junas
finishes the eighth, Cleveland with a two nothing lead going
to the ninth man. Junas was busy this week and

(09:36):
it continued with good stuff on Wednesday against the Tigers.
And then the Guardians got a little more breathing room
in the top half of the ninth inning, couple of
men on, two outs for bow Nailer. Now the O
two swung on line drive toward the line and right
basehat that'll score a pair, Schneeming and Ramire's score. In

(09:57):
the third man Zardle and bow Nailer got an off
speed pitch and hooked it down the right field line
for a two out, two run single, and Cleveland leads
Ford to nothing and a bunch of folks again heading
for the parking lot. And then Kate Smith came on
in the bottom of the ninth trying to complete the

(10:19):
shutout bid.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
Now the two swimming NMS ballgame, and the Guardians have
won the series and are four and a half games back,
and Tiger fans are booing it's been an incredible summer
here in the Motor City. But some folks are not
very happy, even though the Tigers are still very much

(10:43):
in the driver's seat. For nothing, Cleveland is a.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
Winner, boy, great win for Cleveland, a shutout victory over
the Tigers. So they had taken the first two in
the series and they were looking for the three game
series sweep on Thursday afternoon. But boy, the Big Chow
would be facing Trek Scooble, the likely Cy Young Award
winner in the American League for a second straight year,
and he's having a good season. And the Tigers scored

(11:10):
a run in the second inning to take their first
lead in the series, but it didn't last. In the fourth,
John Kenzie Noel stood in against Scooble. Here's the O
two swung on and there's a high fly ball left field.
This one's way back there and it's gone hold run
John Kenzie no Well, the big man is tied the

(11:32):
game at one with a blast beyond the bullpens in
left field on the mound for the Guardians, Tanner Biby
was every bit as good as Scooble on this day.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
Now the one two swinging in a miss bining with
a changeup may have finished his day with his eighth strikeout. Man,
what a ball game, what a series, What a month
of September.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
And then in the seventh, a one out walk to
on Hell Martinez brought Jose Ramirez to the plate.

Speaker 1 (12:03):
One one game. We're in inning number seven. The pitch
and he hits one high in the air to deep
rte Perez is back track.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Woll god, he's done it again.

Speaker 1 (12:17):
Jose Ramirez his thirty fifth home run lifetime against Detroit,
and Cleveland's got a three to one laid here. In
the seventh, Ramirez hits number twenty nine, giving him eighty
rbiyes and who else but number eleven with a game

(12:40):
on the line in a Pennant race comes through again.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
Then the Guardian's bullpen took over. Tim Herron, who pitched
in all three games of the series, worked a scoreless seventh.
Colby Allard shut down the Tigers in the eighth, and
then Kate Smith was on trying to save it in
the ninth.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
Now the two two delivery swung on skied in the
air third base side foul ground. Ramirez is their ball
game and a sweep in Motown and the Guardians, down
fifteen and a half games to Detroit in July, are
now three and a half games out, and Cleveland's won

(13:23):
seven in a row, twelve out of thirteen, and this
improbable September run shows no signs of slowing down.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
How about that a sweep of the Tigers and now
the Guardians have very much a realistic chance to win
the American League's Central Division. Who would have thought when
they were fifteen and a half games out back in
early July. But it is very much a real possibility
for this red hot ball club, and they kept it
going Friday night with the road trip shifting to Minneapolis

(13:56):
against the Twins. The Guardians jumped on Twins starter Pablo
Lopez in the very first inning, two men on, two
men out, and you guessed it, bow Naylor. His big
week continued.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
Now the set, now the two to one, and it
swung and ripped into right. There's the base. H Kwan
will score Ramirez coming home Outman's throat of the plate,
cutoff two nothing Cleveland, and once again bow Nailor delivers
u two out, two runs, single to right, giving him
forty rby eyes on the ear and Cleveland, as they

(14:31):
have done here in the month of September, coming through
in the clutch. That's now a monus seven game hit
streak from bow Naylor. Then on the mound on the
rookie Parker Messick had another lights out start for a
Cleveland starter. Now the one two breaking ball swung on
and miss good curveball. Messick has struck out six the

(14:55):
first time through the Minnesota lineup.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
The two to two swing a miss. I think three
got him with the change up number seven and that
is a new career high in strikeouts. Here's Messick's payoff
pitch called strike three on the outside corner. Parada thought,
you know, maybe I could buy one. With a couple
of steps toward first, Vicarpotza wrung him up. Nine strikeouts

(15:22):
for Messic. What a night again. We say this every
time for Parker Messick in his very young major league career,
and he has another beauty going. But the Twins would
get something going. In the six they scored twice to
tie the game at two, and it stayed that way
until the eighth inning. The Guardians were looking for more
two out magic with two on, and once again it

(15:45):
was bo Naylor coming through in the clutch.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
The pitch swing and ripped. All right, there's a pacient.
It'll score Ramiras pier comes man Sardle four to two,
Cleveland Rock go ball Delli intentionally what Kyle Manzardo to
get to bow Nailor, and for the second time tonight,
bow Nailer a two out, two run single to right

(16:12):
four to two Cleveland. Here in the.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
Eighth, Jacob Junis took care of the twins in the
bottom of the eighth, and in the ninth, the Guardians
added a little insurance with another big two out hit,
this time from Stephen Kuan.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
The pitch swung on line to left, down the line,
fair ball, It'll roll off the sidewalk toward the corner.
Kuan on his way to second in to score David Fry,
and a two out RBI double down the left field
line by Stephen Kwan gives Cleveland a five to two lead.
Here in the ninth, Kwan with his twenty eighth double

(16:47):
and his fiftieth RBI.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
And then an hell Martinez brought home one more that pitch,
a swing and a drive in the deep right center.
Oh is this bowl crushed? It is off the wall.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
Kwan is in the score, Martina's with an RBI double.
It's a six to two Cleveland lead. Martinez with his
twenty third double and forty fifth run banded in and
Cleveland finally has a little breathing room.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
And in the end it was Kate Smith on to
finish the job.

Speaker 1 (17:21):
Kate Smith the set the one to two pitch swung
on groundballed a second dugout by Rochio thurrows to first ballgame.
Eight in a row for Cleveland, thirteen out of their
last fourteen, and the Guardians are two and a half

(17:41):
games behind Detroit for the division lead. Final tonight Cleveland six,
Minnesota two.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
So the Guardians keep right on rolling as they head
into the weekend with a day night doubleheader in Minnesota
on Saturday and a day game on Sunday to finish
out the road trip. Stay with us when we come back.
We'll check in with two hot hitters, Stephen Kwan and
Bow Naylor. That's next is Guardians Weekly continues on the
Cleveland Clinic Guardians Radio Network. Him Rosan Now's back with

(18:39):
you from Target Field in Minneapolis where the Guardians are
taking on the Twins this weekend. The Guardian's playing great baseball,
winners of eight in a row heading to play on Saturday,
and thirteen out of fourteen, and a big reason why
some clutch hitting from Stephen Kwan and some great defense
from Kwan as well. We caught up with them after
two nights series opener victory over the Tigers, and he

(19:02):
talked about the exciting atmosphere in Detroit was so much
on the line for both ball clubs.

Speaker 5 (19:08):
Being back here in Detroit, I'm kind of reminiscent of
what it was last year. You kind of get that
same little feeling of really intense baseball playoff baseball esque.
That was a fun one kind of back and forth,
just two good baseball teams playing and you get a
good result.

Speaker 2 (19:21):
What is it about these two teams that within the
last two years seems to produce games like that.

Speaker 5 (19:26):
I mean, they're super fundamental team. Their defense is always
on lock. They get pinch hitters come in and they
deliver on the spot, like there's no real soft parts
in their lineup. Everybody's kind of you can tell that
they have a plan that not just free swinging. They
just never let you stop. They's just a good team
up and down, and you know we have to play
to their level.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
You mentioned defense, Let's stay right there with you. You
have the goal gloves, but you keep working at it.
And last night again more key plays, a relay that
resulted in and out at home and some other plays too.
How difficult can this outfield be here, especially coming off
a home stand where you have that short wall and.

Speaker 5 (20:02):
Left Yeah, I mean to Troth's huge. It's not as
big as the center and right I think those we
are a little bigger than the left field. But I
mean there's still a lot of ground to cover. So
just understanding your field, understanding the Rickchet's and how the
field plays, this one plays fairly true. There's no light,
weird angles or cuts. It's it's just really big. So
that makes positioning all that more important. Jake's got his
lined up in really good spots, and I think you

(20:23):
can see the fruits of his labor. And when we
can cut the balls off and keep him short.

Speaker 2 (20:28):
When there's a runner thrown out at the plate, that
means the cutoff man comes into play. How big is
having Gabriel Harris as the cutoff man on a lot
of these plays for you.

Speaker 5 (20:39):
I mean, yeah, it's it's huge. Like I just told
you before we started, I did not do the hard
part in that relay. All my job is is just
get to the cutoff man, and we're taught to if
we're gonna miss somewhere, miss high. So I missed a
little high on him, and usually it's supposed to go
to the next guy, but he backed up and he
cut it in stride and did a perfect throw. So
I mean, that was just an unbelievable play from him,

(21:00):
and Rokio has to be commended as well. Or in
the year, I had a couple of relays with him
as well and he does the same thing. So I
mean it's testament to the whole infield squad taking their
pregame work really importantly.

Speaker 2 (21:11):
You mentioned that you work hard at it. Now, how
much of this, though, the defensive part of it in
your game, goes back to your college days at Oregon State.
How hard did you work at it? Debt?

Speaker 5 (21:19):
Yeah, no, one hundred percent. That's where it all started.
I wasn't a great hitter in college, so my kind
of role was pinch bunning and just going in for
defense replacement. So defense was really just my way of
staying on the field, and then if we gained the lead,
maybe I'd get in that bat to prove myself. But
I knew early on that if I didn't play good
defense in the outfield, I really didn't have a shot
at getting any kind of consistent starting time.

Speaker 2 (21:41):
Stephen Quantz joining us and at the plate looks like
you're going again, And I know you had that stretch
around the all start game where you were battling some things.
How different do you feel now than maybe then when
you were trying to get to a good place but
we're struggling with some health thing.

Speaker 5 (21:56):
Yeah, obviously you want to be one hundred percent is
as often as you can, and knowing I wasn't one
hundred percent, I kind of had to shift my game
a little bit to kind of, you know, trying to
work counts, put the ball and play just kind of
be a nuisance up there. And it wasn't the kind
of game that I wanted to play. And as the
risk healed, I could feel myself kind of starting to
get back to what I was before. And yeah, the

(22:17):
angles are shown up really well now. Selection I think
has gone up as well. Agreston has gone up. So
I feel like I did before. I think there's still
a lot of ground that I need to make up with,
like lower half body stuff. I mean, that'll all come.

Speaker 2 (22:30):
And you're not getting to go ahead run in the
tenth after the big home run for Detroit, But it
almost seems like this team welcomes that kind of challenge. Yet,
what is the feeling in the dugout after one gets away?
But you still have a chance.

Speaker 5 (22:43):
Yeah, as I'm saying this all the whole time, I
think it's a lot of momentum of what the games
were before. I think if we were on a bad stretch,
I think we would look around and be like, oh,
like here we go again, Like this could be this
would be one that gets away from us. But because
we've been winning all these series and playing really good baseball,
I think we all looked around and was like, okay,
like this is nothing new. We believe in ourselves, we
believe in each other. Not trying to do too much.

(23:04):
It's just my job there was just get the runner
over and thankfully found a hole. And I think everybody
kind of had the same mindset of you know, just
get the next guy up, have a productive at bat,
and then good things happen.

Speaker 2 (23:12):
You've been part of two postseason runs here. This one
feels different though, But because you're chasing trying to get in,
how different does it feel to you and those who've
been through it before compared to the other ones.

Speaker 5 (23:24):
Yeah, it's exciting when I think of how this year
could have gone. I think of how twenty three was
where we didn't have a great trade deadline, we fell
out of it, I feel like pretty early, and then
at the last month it didn't feel like we were
playing really meaningful baseball. So just the fay they were
playing meaningful baseball, I think is a real blessing, and
it's nice that we're able to control our destiny to

(23:44):
a certain point. If we win all our games, I
think we'll be in a really good spot. Obviously we
have to depend on some other teams to do what
they got to do, but we play a lot of
people that are ahead of us. I just know that
it's easy to kind of go on autopilot September and
right now we're playing for something, so I feel like
everybody locked in. It doesn't feel like September to me.
So we're I feel like we're in a really good
spot and just you know, stay president and then be

(24:06):
our feed aar.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
It's been fun to watch for sure, Steven, thanks for coming.
I appreciate it.

Speaker 5 (24:09):
Yeah, thanks really look for having me.

Speaker 2 (24:11):
That's Guardians outfielder and who knows, maybe a fourth consecutive
Gold Glove year for Stephen Kwan as he continues to
play that great defense and come up with big base
hits as well. Bo Naylor has been swinging a hot
bat for the Guardians for more than a week, and
we'll talk to him about that in a moment, but
first congratulations are in order, as he's this year's Guardian's

(24:34):
nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, recognizing players for their
efforts in community service, and Bo explains why lending a
helping hand is so important to him.

Speaker 7 (24:46):
I think it's, you know, my way of being able
to give back, making an impact in the in the community.
You know, I'm in a very fortunate position to be
a professional baseball player, and you know, I definitely understand
that the impact that I can have is very big. So,
you know, it's just just my way of giving back.

(25:07):
Making sure that I'm taking care of parts of the
community as best as I can is something that you know,
I speak a lot about for my family, Uh, you know,
my parents instealing that in me. Wanting to care about
the community, the people around us, you know, for for
the apl the animals that might need us, and yeah,

(25:29):
you know, just just being able to give back in
any type of way.

Speaker 2 (25:31):
Let's stay right there on the APL. What are some
of the things that you're able to do to help
animals in Northeast Will High.

Speaker 7 (25:38):
Yeah, you know, being able to go out and make
different like kids almost you know, with like treats and
toys for the animals, like like goodie bags almost so
being able to kind of spend my time that way,
and you know, just just before with an effort to
help in any way that I can, you know, making
donations as well, Like I said, just just trying to

(26:01):
make an impact in as best a way as I
can to to help animals and need.

Speaker 2 (26:08):
Chess Club seems like it's taken on a mind of
its own. How has that changed maybe from when you
first started to what it's evolved into now in terms
of the impact that you and some teammates have made.

Speaker 7 (26:18):
Yeah, it's it's been a huge progression thus far, and
you know, it's been super exciting getting to know, uh,
you know, all all the different kids that are a
part of it from all the schools in the area.
You know, there's there's some awesome personalities that have been
able to share those opportunities and experiences with us, and
you know, being able to be part of that is

(26:39):
nothing short of amazing.

Speaker 2 (26:40):
You know, it's definitely something that you.

Speaker 7 (26:42):
Know, you can use as like a way to escape
from the game as well, just kind of hang out
and enjoy some good chess. You know, That's how it's
been from my perspective. But you know a lot of
the guys in the team have been putting forth an
effort to try to make that impact as well, just
you know, share, share a good time, play some chess,
learn something new, get to know you know, other kids

(27:04):
that are in the community, and you know, try to
make an impact as well.

Speaker 2 (27:08):
And I think you're aware that when chess Club happens,
good things happen on the field for those that participate.
How much of a coincidence is this, and maybe it's
something else, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (27:19):
Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 7 (27:20):
It's it's been awesome and I think it's done a
really good job of connecting us as a group, you know,
from the the kids that are a part of it,
to the players as well, you know, being able to
share that you know, every day that we've had a
chess Club event. You know, I don't know the exact stats,
but usually a homer is hit, whether it's someone that's

(27:42):
a part of the chess club more times than not.
But yeah, usually good things happen, you know, the Guards
come out with a dub and we're able to kind
of all celebrate that together.

Speaker 2 (27:52):
Big game Sunday, home run to run double. What does
it mean to you when you can contribute both behind
the plate and at the play, especially now down the stretch.

Speaker 7 (28:02):
It's awesome anyway that I can can go out there
and help and be a part of the game and
make an impact the best I can. My mind's in
a good spot, especially with these games being so important.
Being able to take it one day at a time
and go out there, prepare and just try to get
a job done. That's that's where my head's up. That's
where this team's focus is at. So for me personally

(28:23):
to be able to be a part of that impact
is huge.

Speaker 2 (28:26):
And certainly fans are fired up for a series against
the Tigers in Detroit. How about in the clubhouse. I
know you're supposed to take every game the same, but
obviously a big series here.

Speaker 7 (28:36):
Yeah, I think it's nothing short of exciting, you know,
and there's a lot of stuff to be grateful for
to this point. You know, the fact that we're in
a position to be able to to compete for a
spot I think is awesome, and you know, to to
go out there and play meaningful games and just go
out there and try to compete and win baseball games.
You know, that's that's what it's all about. So you know,

(28:56):
we definitely all can consider ourselves fortunate and we're really
just doing everything we can to prepare to go out
and win games for the team, for the fans.

Speaker 2 (29:08):
It has been fun for sure. Bo, thanks a lot
for coming.

Speaker 3 (29:10):
I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (29:10):
Apprecia, thank you boy. And that's Bow Naylor and we
talked to him before his big night on Friday night
in Minneapolis. He just keeps right on swinging a hot
bat and it couldn't come at a better time. Stay
with us when we come back. We'll visit with two
relief pictures for the Guardians lefties who have played a
big role in this lengthy winning streak for Cleveland. Tim

(29:33):
Herron and Kolby Aller will stop by.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
Next a progressive home. An ottowuntle can protect you around
the clock, but we can't protect you from those painful
moments in sports. The rough totally blew that call. Oh,
I'm sure he'll make the right call next time. It's
too late.

Speaker 5 (29:51):
It cost us the game.

Speaker 3 (29:53):
It's just one game that loss.

Speaker 5 (29:55):
Eliminated us from the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (29:56):
Oh, the playoffs are run so late. No, you'll be
well rested.

Speaker 5 (30:00):
Okay, I need you to stop talking now.

Speaker 3 (30:02):
Well, at least you're Hollanado or protected with a bundle
from Progressive Progressive Casual Gnterns Company Affiliates another inturers not
available in tho states.

Speaker 4 (30:08):
A situations.

Speaker 2 (30:24):
Well in the Backet's our final segment of Guardians Weekly,
Jim rosenhouse along with you from Target Field in Minneapolis
where the Guardians take on the Twins this weekend Saturday
at day night doubleheader, two ten start for the opener,
and then the nightcap is seven to ten first pitch
Cleveland time with a two ten start for Sunday's road
trip finale. Tim Herron has been pitching extremely well since

(30:48):
he returned from a second stint in Columbus in early August,
and he couldn't have been more effective than he was
in all three games this week in Detroit, including Tuesday
night when he struck out out the side and the
seventh inning when the game was still tight, and the
next day talked about what it's like pitching in those
pressure pack situations.

Speaker 8 (31:09):
Yeah, I mean, we're playing some meaningful baseball right now,
and to be able to come in and spole like
that and help our team win, that's the most important thing.
But yeah, I mean, considering how the season gone hasn't
been exactly what I wanted, but I've been bad on
all year and to come up big in that situation
was felt really good.

Speaker 2 (31:28):
I know you mentioned after the game that the series
with the Tigers here in Detroit, there's a little extra
buzz for sure, no question. And how early does that
become apparent to you, even maybe before the game starts.

Speaker 8 (31:39):
Yeah, I mean it for us anyway, they feels very
much like a playoff baseball for us. Just where we
are in the standings for the wild card and everything else.
We don't we can't really afford to slip up right now,
so we're playing with our backs against the wall. But
we have a really resilient group, a lot of good players,
and we're getting at the right time. So but yeah,

(32:02):
I think every series from here on out it's gonna
really feel just as big as the next.

Speaker 2 (32:06):
Tim Herron is joining us. Tim, it's been a season
where you've had to go back to triple a couple
of times. Now, have you handled that and it turned
it to your advantage if you can? And what can
be a difficult situation.

Speaker 8 (32:18):
Yeah, I mean, obviously you never when I get told,
you know, you're getting optioned, But it's part of the game.
You can either be salty about it and kind of
get pissed off, I guess, or you can take it
and go down and work on things you need to
work on, because there's always something to work on. And

(32:40):
I kind of went down there with that mindset and
the staff they have down there's really good. They helped
me a lot, and you know, just take everything I can,
work on everything I can down there, and when I
get the chance to come back up, you know, make
an impact.

Speaker 2 (32:52):
Fun factor. You've been fortunate to be a part of
two teams that have been in contention at September last
year it resulted in a postseason bid. How enjoyable are
September games and hopefully October games when your team is
playing well like the Guardians aren't now.

Speaker 8 (33:07):
I mean, it's a lot of fun, especially when you're
playing this late in the season. You're playing for something,
you know, like I said before, this, every play every
series right now, it feels like a playoff series, and
I mean it's a lot of fun. We all come together.
We're really hot right now, and we're just gonna keep
trying to win every game no matter however we do it.

(33:28):
I feel like every day the different way of winning
a baseball game, just with how we play defensively, we
make some big plays, big hits, timely pitching.

Speaker 1 (33:37):
You know.

Speaker 8 (33:39):
Yeah, it's just really exciting and.

Speaker 2 (33:40):
It's been fun to watch for sure, Tim, thanks for coming.
I appreciate it.

Speaker 4 (33:43):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (33:44):
It's left handed relief pitcher Tim Herron, who's had a
big week already. Same for Colby Allard, another lefty out
of the pen who really hasn't pitched much of late.
In fact, he went two weeks without pitching before he
was needed in the eighth inning on Thursday in the
win over the Tigers. He pitched a scoreless eighth and
he talked about his mindset and how he's able to

(34:05):
stay ready whenever his number might be called.

Speaker 9 (34:09):
The mentality I was taking was just kind of, you know,
the same thing, go out there, try to do your
job and put up a zero. I think with just
obviously a little bit of the long way off where
trying to you know, keep our catch playing our mound
work as diligent as we could. But you know, once
we kind of got out there sixty feet six inches away,
it's compete time. So that was just kind of the
mentality to go out there and compete to the best
we could.

Speaker 2 (34:28):
Is there any way to simulate that when when you
are in a stretch where you're just not getting much action.

Speaker 9 (34:34):
Yeah, you know, I don't think. I don't think there's
any way you can completely recreate game, you know, game situations.
But at the same time, you know, just you know,
being here every day, being involved in every game. You know,
it didn't feel like as it didn't feel like every
bit of fourteen days.

Speaker 2 (34:48):
But I guess it was your job. It's just the
way it is. Every staff has that pitcher who has
to be available in a moment's notice, and then sometimes
it seems like you're throwing every day for a week
in different spots. But from the standpoint of not pitching
that much, can that be a good thing because that
means the starters are going deep into games and giving
the team a great chance to win.

Speaker 9 (35:09):
Yeah, you know, obviously, if the long lan down bullpen
isn't being used a ton. I means the starters are
going really deep into games and pitching very well. So
I think it's been obviously just a credit to our
starting pitchers, especially since we went to that six man.
You know, everybody's been pulling a little bit of extra weight,
and you know, I think it's been it's been fun
seeing them go out there and do their thing, and
you know, just us out in the bullpen are kind
of trying to just you know, pick up where they

(35:31):
left off and keep keep putting zeros up on the board.
So I think it's yeah, no, I think it's been
I think it's been good, but it's definitely it's definitely
good to get back out there, for sure.

Speaker 2 (35:39):
I feel like as far back as spring training you
had a good feeling about this organization, and there's been
a couple of opportunities where maybe you could have gone
somewhere else over the course of the season. But what's
kept you coming back here and making sure that you've
been a part of this, even even looking back at
it from very early on in your time here.

Speaker 9 (35:57):
Yeah, you know, I think the Guardians pitching depart as
a whole, and I would love to give a special
shout out to Bow and Hedgy along with them as well.
I think just the way that they kind of simplify
what we need to do out on the mound, and
coming from someone who's maybe over complicated things, you know,
at times in his past, I think they just do
a very good job of messaging what we're good at,

(36:20):
you know what the hitters are not necessarily you know,
struggle with and you know, our best spots to throw things.
So I think, you know, just them kind of reiterating
my strengths as a pitcher and and just kind of
going out there and continuing to believe in myself as
a pitcher. I think the Guardians, the whole pitching department
and catching staff has done a great job of kind

(36:41):
of letting letting that kind of continue.

Speaker 2 (36:45):
Ten games to go. Uh what about this team says
to you that that there's going to be more than ten?

Speaker 1 (36:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (36:51):
I think when when the clubhouse doors are closed, we
believe we can beat anybody. And I think any day
that anytime we walk out of that clubhouse out to
the out I think, you know, we can put a
on the board. So I think that's the belief that
we've had, and I think that's the belief we're going
to kind of continue to take moving forward.

Speaker 2 (37:05):
Call me nice going yesterday, Thanks for coming back, of course,
thanks for having me well. It takes everybody to have
an effective run like the Guardians are on here down
the stretch trying to track down the Tigers, and Colby
Allard was a part of it earlier this week against Detroit,
pitching that eighth inning with the game on the line
against the Tigers as part of that three game series suite.

(37:26):
It's been quite a week and that's going to do
it for this week's edition of Guardians Weekly. We'll join
you next weekend when the Guardians are back home their
final weekend of the regular season. Hopefully it's not our
final show with baseball being played, as the Guardians are
doing their darness trying to get into the postseason and
they're trying to leave nothing to chance as they continue

(37:49):
to pile up win after win. Thanks to Brian Matse
for all of his help on our show each and
every week until next week. This is Jim Rosenhouse reminding
you that you've been listening to Guardians on the Cleveland
Clinic Guardians Radio Network

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
