amps Barborcare is master Arborist Kevin Ham. Kevin, how you

(00:51):
doing this week?

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Good morning, Sean, What a beautiful day to day. It
is a great day, like you know, sunny and fresh rain.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
Yes, yes, it is beautiful out there. It looks like
we've got some great days ahead as well. It's kind
of looking at that forecast pretty good up through the
weekend anyway. And uh, I know you guys keep busy
rain and shine and uh, whether it's middle of summer,
dead of winter, there's always stuff to be done. And
one of the things, of course is we as we

(01:22):
look towards fall and things getting cooler, things like oaks
start to come into play. And I know one of
the things right now is is, of course with trees
like oak trees, for example, things like making sure that
they are healthy. I'm dealing with some other issues like
like chlorotica issues. Those things can be addressed right now,
can't they, Kevin.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
Yeah, In fact, this is when there they're really noticeable
that you're if you're white oak is usually white oaks,
sometimes red oaks, pinoaks. Also some red maples can be chlorotic.
And what chlorotic means is a yellow leaf when it
should be We're not talking about sunburst honey locusts, which

(02:05):
is supposed to be yellow. It's actually a yellow leaf
where it should be green. And oftentimes you'll see it's
yellow in between the veins and the veins are green.
So that's a real good indicator. If you walk up
to your tree and go, you know, that is kind
of looking yellow now that Kevin mentioned that, and you
walk up there and you see those green veins and

(02:28):
in between it's kind of yellowish, and that means there's
a deficiency ordinarily an iron, but manganese can also be
one of the micronutrients involved, and we usually apply biochart
ELI is applying a couple of biocharts today where we

(02:48):
mix charcoal, our own activated charcoal with chylated iron and
manganese dissolved in water together and then that cat ion
exchange occurs charges in that delusion, and then we you know,
prep the soil around the trees, maybe drill some some

(03:11):
auger holes that infiltrate different depths, and we pour that
slurry around and and really benefit that tree.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Kevin with that too, I've always wondered, is it is
it just that over time the tree itself has absorbed
all of the all of the iron and other needed minerals,
or what what kind of is the underlying cause for
that to start to appear. Is there is there some
other reason or or is it just simply effective?

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Yeah, it can be a stress maybe that where the
tree lost a lot of roots, you know, and so
then just it's got less roots and it has less
going on. Oftentimes it's the pH of the soil has
risen over time, and that's very difficult to change the
pH of the soil, so you know a number of

(04:05):
years ago that come in try to alter that that situation,
and it's like you know, trying to change the pool
pH with you know, a teacup. So it's very difficult
to alter the soil pH. And so what we try

(04:30):
to do is is get iron into the tree. Oftentimes,
if it's very chlorotic, we'll do our chlorosis bundle, which
is actually for treatment. It's the injection of iron directly
into the tree. And while we have those holes drilled,
we can kind of tank mix that in with the

(04:52):
the same product that we treat emerald dashboarder with also
treat this cousin the two line and anytime you have
a stressed oak, you're going to have the two line
chest a border. And then we put down canvas stat
which is a growth regulator that reduces the growth of
the canopy but redirects that energy into the fine root growth.

(05:17):
So fine roots are what take in those micronutrients. And
then we add you know, biochar and an iron mixed
to the soil, and so you have that charge biochar
or that that iron and magnes are available to the tree,
and then hopefully we get the the health of the

(05:39):
tree rising, and so then it just functions better because
oftentimes you can have a chloronic white oat and right
next to it is a white oak that's not chlorox.
So it's not just about the soil. There's other things.
And maybe a tree for some reason has gotten you know,
behind the curve right under the eight ball, whatever it

(06:01):
in you want to use it. It's suffering and if
we can get it to rebound. Oftentimes we can we
can get that going in and other times where the
it is definitely the pH that's causing it. Maybe every
three years, this is a three year coverage, you know,
it just starts to turn a little yellow again and
then we.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
We do it.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
But it's a it's it's a palatable service. Let's say
that for the discretionary spender. When it's every three years,
you know.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
And and so we've kind of created that bundle to
to attack this specific problem.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
And I know we talked in the past two about
the importance of all of those separate parts and why
you bundle them all together. They're all very vital. If
you've got to you've got an oak that is that
is experiencing some concerns the importance of addressing all of
those issues. That's one of the great things too when
you work with Kevin and the team at Ham's Arborcare
is really getting solutions to the issues and of course

(06:58):
understanding holisticly what all needs to be done and how
it needs to be approached. And Kevin, we started this
week's conversation off too talking about seasonal things. And you
guys work at hamsarbacare You guys work year round, as
a matter of fact, the winter months, the fall months.
There are some jobs that are just better executed during
those during those typically which people would assume for an

(07:20):
arborist to be off months, and you guys take advantage
of those months for very good reason. Let's talk about
looking ahead and especially you know you think about homeowner
associations municipalities as well. It's a good time to start
that conversation for winter work and other things, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
Yeah, definitely, And you know with with home owners, you know,
situations or homeowner associations and municipalities.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Yeah, it's.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
It's kind of a big There's a lot of companies
out there, right and maybe some know us. We've worked
with several of them, but there's a number of home
owner associations we have not worked with. They don't know
anything about Amazon here, but what we've done for different situations.
I know that the Wisconsin D and R at the

(08:08):
McKenzie Center had a large, like a whole bunch of
trees that they didn't feel comfortable selling. They were in
and around other important trees and buildings, and we worked
up a day rate for them so that you know,
they kind of had a budget. And because I can

(08:30):
just they hadn't worked specifically with us like that particular
manager had worked with us. And we said, well, let's
let us show you what we can do in a day.
And let's just say we left there after a day,
and they were very happy with the amount of work
that we got done in that scenario. And since I

(08:51):
homeowners associations have a ton of trees to prove and
maybe a lot of training pruning, and they don't even
know the problems that they have there that are waiting
to happen, but they have a lot of pruning to
be done and to go through. And you know, individually,
bid you know, how much do we have here? And
and you know, but what if we just came in

(09:13):
with a specification. Hey, we're going to prune these trees
to these specifications, and we'll we'll start started this priority,
and we'll work this way and you'll see how much
we can do. And so we can have a measurable
uh item, line item that they can say, well, we're
going to spend this much and and we're going to

(09:34):
see and and I'm very confident in our crew that
that we come out of that situation being highly appreciated.
That is we recently, we regentally did that for one,
that that's what occurred.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
That's pretty amazing, Kevin. I got asked too. Is one
of the things when I moved to the area and
started kind of branching out of it, and I noticed
there's a lot of like seasonal campgrounds and other things
that I think a place is with, you know, some
beautiful big trees, but a lot of things below that
the I want to protect. You guys, do you do
any work with those type of groups as well?

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Yeah, we do, and and you know a similar situation.
That was a great segue, Sean.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
But they.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
You know, they they have the ability to do the
stuff on the ground oftentimes, but they just have this
stage of stuff over the trailers. Yeah, and so we
come in and we we put a bunch of stuff
down in a day, and then they have all winter
to kind of clean that up. And so that's a
great example of a situation where hey, a day rate

(10:39):
might be a good win win, you know, and we
might not get everything done that you have done, but
we were in your budget and we got a lot
more done than they would have ever gotten done, you know,
and we didn't wreckon anything. And so that's a great example.
I just signed something like that for a guy in
one hundred and twenty acres and he had a whole

(11:00):
bunch of trees marked where like for hunting, you know,
and and he wanted these little clearings with him. It
was an old pine plantation. So there's some pretty big
pines coming down, and and you know, what do you
do to bid that? You know, what kind of number
do you put on that? But you know, we can
fell trees, and we we got a loader out there,
we can move and stack stuff. Nothing's going away. He

(11:23):
just needs it out of the areas where we're taking
the trees down, we can put them inside the brows
of plantation. And we've struck a deal on a day
rate for a couple of guys go out there and
you know, we probably impress him on what we can
get done in that in that scenario, and it's a

(11:43):
good measurable wind for him. Uh And and then we
have we have the opportunity to uh you know know,
you know what we're getting out of this. But we
just we put our skills to work and and that usually,
you know, it always comes out as a great win, win, great.
