Twenty four thirteen ten Wiba and Askthe Experts, joined this morning by Kevin
Ham, master arborist at Ham'sarborcare atthe website Hamsarborcare dot com. That's h

(00:33):
from one of my favorite cities, and this is not a joke, one
of my favorite cities in the world. Kevin is in Saint Louis, Missouri
this morning. And if you leaveSaint Louis, they might say Missouri,
but in MISSI in Saint Louis, they say Missouri. What the heck are
you doing in Saint Louis. Yeah, we got the GCI Expo down here.
Uh and so, yeah, thebig Big Boy Toy Show, and
(00:57):
I'm down here early for the preconference. It's uh some training. I
was actually almost forgot about you thatyou're not going to jump out of a
conference room. And uh yeah,so we're I'm doing some uh some training
today and then the show starts tomorrow. Taylor and Eli are coming down tonight.
(01:21):
We're gonna spend a couple of daysdrooling over equipment. You haven't been
tempted to try and climb the arch, have you? No? No,
I haven't. I haven't. I'vebeen up there though before in the past.
It took a nice shot of itthis morning and walking across the street.
Oh, that is great. Oneof the things I love about Saint
Louis is you're never lost because youcan always look up and yeah, you
(01:44):
always look where that art is andthere are places you don't want to get
lost in around then, yeah, exactly St. Louis. Let's talk about
Kevin. Of course, for peoplethat don't know about t c I and
t c I A. Of course, you're a member of TCIA at Hams
Arborcare. Let's talk about what thatmeans. And I know you've been recognized
(02:06):
on a number of occasions by TCIfor the work that you do. For
people that don't know about the TreeCare Industry Association, what is it?
What does the membership mean and whatare you going to be doing while you're
in Saint Louis. Yeah, well, you know there's two main organizations.
Is a International Society of Abculture, which kind of caters towards the individual arborist
(02:28):
and that's where I'm certified through asa board certified Master Arborists. And then
there's Tree Care Industry Association, whichcaters more towards the company, and they
also have a lot of individual training, but it's training kind of focused on
on helping the company, like ayou know, an academy kind of thing.
(02:50):
And so they have a lot ofonline training that you can institute as
a company and kind of be andand of course they offer the accreditation process
for your company. And so HamsBarborcare is an accredited company through the Tree
Care Industry Association. So when somebodyasked us, do you have insurance?
We have to do and we havea third party that's validating that we have
(03:12):
insurance and and so we have toyou know, jump through a lot of
hoops. Basically, we're operating asif we were a company of over one
hundred employees regarding OSHA and everything else. We were jumping through all those hoops
documenting all of our training and youknow, we have weekly safety meetings with
(03:32):
the guys where we you know, are are talking through different safety and we've
got materials from the Tree Care IndustryAssociation that we we utilize for those training
meetings and and then we we havea real open culture in Hams Arborcare where
we hey, you know, anyany you know, near misses this week
(03:52):
or significant incidents where we want totalk about it. And you know,
nobody's on the chopping block for thesethings, you know, treatcare, treatcare.
You know, things things happen oryou know, it's it's risky business
all the time, and so we'realways want to be reviewing these things.
And if something can be shared thatyou know, helps keep somebody alive later,
(04:15):
that's a good thing. And that'swhat these conferences are about. The
training sessions are you know, we'regoing through the A three hundred standards this
morning and that's all the standards andwhy we have those standards, and we'll
be talking through I'm sure a lotof scenarios that people will share back and
forth. Yeah, that's a greatevent. It's it's and in one of
(04:39):
the things Kevin, I've learned intalking with you over the years. Obviously,
membership and organizations and knowledge and thebenefits of that is one one area.
But also the other area for forfolks at Arborous and people in Treatcare
is you guys are a tight knitcommunity. Not only do you get together
at conferences and share information, butthere's a lot of mentors and others out
there that really help mold and helphelp, you know, teach the skill.
(05:01):
This is not, certainly not oneof those careers that you can simply
learn from a textbook textbook. You'vegot to you've really got to be hands
on, and you've also really gotto have a lot of fieldwork and really
good mentors and really good people outthere to help you learn how the physics
and all the other things. Again, the camping necessarily taught in the classroom
how they happened. And I knowyou've had a number of mentors over the
(05:24):
years. There have been a numberof really important people that have that have
helped shape what you guys do athams Arborcare. And recently you had lost
somebody had passed away that that wasa pretty big mentor to a lot of
folks in the industry. Yeah,Norm Hall out of out of Chicago area.
(05:44):
It's gonna be you know, sorelymissed. And it was just you
know, less than two weeks agothat that he passed unexpectedly and he would
have been here you know, andand he is somebody that's behind a lot
of the safety that is in theTree Care Industry Association. There's probably not
(06:04):
a TCIA XPO since it's been calledTCIA x BO that he hasn't been at.
And so that, you know,I was looking forward. He and
his wife actually checked us in Taylorand I at the competition that we recently
had. He was the head judgeof Wisconsin Harbor Association, you know,
(06:25):
and he was he was one ofthe judges twenty years ago when I won
the competition. And you know,he's been around, you know, forever.
His dad was a fifty year arboric. I saw a picture of his
dad climbing a tree, you know, walked limb walking in a big oak
at age sixty five. And Normat seventy was still climbing, you know.
(06:51):
And and so he is. He'san icon and a master of ropes,
masters splice, sir, just alot of things that he he was.
And and I'm gonna be taking someinterviews down here. I'm going to
be doing a video on the conferenceand kind of he's going to be the
(07:12):
featured backdrop of that video. We'llget a couple of key interviews from people
who have known him for a longtime and done a lot of training with
him and hopefully give him a littletribute and that. So that will be
next week's release. Definitely, definitely, definitely something to look forward to and
on YouTube and get that show.Yeah, and you mentioned the YouTube channel,
of course, Ham's Arborcare. They'vegot there. They've got the YouTube
(07:34):
channel Game of Trees. Check themout. A lot of very great,
interesting, informative entertaining videos. Also, of course, you know, with
Kevin down and Saint Louis and andthe video that's going to be put together,
there definitely something you want to subscribeto and watch as well. Kevin,
It's time always flies. I enjoythat. I want you to enjoy
your time in Saint Louis. Iknow you've probably been there a number of
(07:57):
times before. It's always a funcity to explore. And then uh barbacue,
