nine six, that's toll free call eight six six five
nine six five three nine six. And joining us this
morning from Hams Arborcare is Master Arborist Kevin Ham. Kevin,
how you doing this week?

Speaker 2 (00:42):
I'm doing great, Sean. We're uh, you know, we had
a bunch of our grandkids living in our house for
little oh man, we're back to hamt oh. Definitely quiet.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
It is amazing. You put a few kids in the
house and like, yeah, just the noise and it's so
much fun though at the same time, so well, that's uh,
that's exciting stuff. How many grand kids do you have now, Kevin?
I know you you recently we have nine nine well that.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Is nine eight little boys and a little girl.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Oh and she's probably the toughest of them.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
All right, she is very tough. Yeah, our farm girl
I've been black.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Oh yeah, very very cool. We've got we've got some
speaking of cool stuff and fun stuff. We've got a
really great show ahead, and I'm gonna be talking about
about We'll talk about speaking of farms, farm tech days,
and I also talk about some boilers some other things.
Real quick though, Kevin. As we as we kind of

(01:43):
go through the seasons and we are obviously still full
swing summer, it's a good time also though, to be
thinking about the next step. And I know, obviously as
an arborist you're always thinking, uh, next season, next year,
ten years, twenty years, thirty years. But for homeowners and
folks with with trees that they want to care for,
it's a good time to be thinking. And it's it's

(02:04):
a nice feeling these these hot days we've had, is
start thinking winter. It's a good time to be get
getting winter work scheduled and ready to go, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yeah, we're definitely thinking winter here. And and you know,
I just visited one last week that had extensive gardens.
I mean, I don't think I've seen this. The woman
that lived in this place for you know, forty five
fifty years and she's taken care of these immense gardens,
still very active, and it was just a beautiful little

(02:35):
oasis out in the country, a little farmat and just
every bit of her property was was these elaborate gardens.
And we had two big dead trees. And you know,
wintertime would be the best time to invade a place
like that to extract a couple of trees. Just the

(02:56):
novelty is lower. A lot of those perennials are put
to sleep. We can just do things with a lot
less impact to those surrounding obstacles.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
And Kevin with that too. And it's interesting because I
don't think folks always think about winter work when it
comes to arborius. I know a lot of arborists don't
think about winter work or tree services. Don't think about
winter work themselves. As a matter of fact. If they
stick around, they throw a plow on the front of
their truck and they're doing other types of work. Hams arborcare.
You're going full swing year round. It's you're not even

(03:32):
slowing down for those winter We.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Don't do snow. The only snow we do is the
snow that's in our way to get to the tree.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Yeah, So oftentimes we'll have a snow overnight or something
and we'll we'll do some shop work, but then we're
we're getting out there and we're wrecking people's snow. Sometimes
we get that history like oh it looks so beautiful
and now you're gonna take this. But uh, yeah, we
we get out there and get the work done and

(04:04):
brush the branches off, you know, as we as we
limb walk, you know, if we're climbing in the snow.
But yeah, it's all doable. All the physical work of
tree work is doable in the winter time and in
oftentime if we get frozen ground or frozen ice, there's
there's certain jobs that are facilitated by that, that frozenness.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
And that's one of the and it's it's it's interesting
when you bring that angle up. Is that's one of
those things that I'm like, boy, would have missed opportunity.
But for you know, for those arborous that and those
tree care and I use air quotes there folks that
take them winter like, you're really missing prime opportunity not
to be doing this stuff. And Kevin speaking of the
winter months, folks with sheds and outbuildings, and I know

(04:50):
obviously kind of these these awesome, awesome workshops that folks
have keeping them warm, keeping them comfortable. You have a
fantastic line of products at at at Hamsarborcare and of
course Gameoftrees dot Com, the portage and main boilers, and
you're actually gonna be gonna be showing those off at
at Farm Tech Days, aren't you.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Yes, And we'll we'll have a burn trailer there, so
there will be a boiler, an active boiler burning. So
that's a you know, a good you can kind of
actually see it working. And so yeah, up in Clintonville, Wisconsin,
up there north of Appleton. Uh, ways, it's gonna it's

(05:32):
kind of something that happens every year farm Tech Days. Yeah,
you're all interested in farming, but uh, we're gonna be
up there representing portage and main boilers, and I'll have
a little you know tent set up with Game of
Trees merch. You know, we'll have our our biotart products
out there with the soap and uh and charcoal and

(05:53):
and of course our t shirts and axes and different
things that we have. Uh. But yeah, the portage main
boiler is one of the best manufactured boilers. It has
great you know, heat properties, with refractory cement inside that

(06:13):
holds the heat. It has a fast recovery time. So
if you know anything about outdoor boiler heat, you know,
you might think all the volumes of wood you have
to put in these things, but this burns, you know,
fifty percent less than some competitive boilers, and so you're
you're burning less wood, higher efficiency. It is. It is

(06:36):
a standard boiler. It's not a gasification unit. So it
is very forgiving on the on the firewood, you know,
as far as what you put in there, how dry
it has to be. It's not real finicky that way.
And you can't have it in town, you know, so
you have to have something that's out in the country.

(06:58):
But once it, once it gets heated up, there's not
a lot of smoke coming out of that thing, and
it really does. There's nothing better than being consistent hot
water heat for just keeping that house nice and toasty
through the winter.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
I was gonna ask too about you know, I mentioned
things like outbuildings other things, but for folks that have
that option you can heat. I mean these you mentioned
that nice consistent eat These things work well for a
bunch of different applications, including your home.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Yeah, you know, you can get them to heat over
ten thousand square feet, you know, so you can heat
your house and an outbuilding very very nicely with a
single unit.

Speaker 1 (07:42):
So with this, with the obviously you'll have a booth
and everything you mentioned the soaps and other things also
a great opportunity for folks who haven't had a chance
to meet you in person, a great opportunity for them
to stop up and say hello. And you mentioned the
Birch Trek Game of Trees. Of course, if you don't
get a chance, I would urge you to get out
to the Tech Days. But if you don't get a
chance to do that, you can always order right online

(08:03):
a gameoftrees dot com. That's Game of Trees dot com.
And Kevin. One final thing too is speaking of different
seasons and different things going on, fall will be here
literally in no time, and and fall pruning is something
that we're starting to think about, aren't we.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Yeah, all of our our oaks, you know, we we
try to avoid the oak wilt season. It's a lot
of the ordinances in Dane County are through October fifteenth,
and so we're already we have booked work during that time,
So get your oaks on the schedule. Winter is only
so long, yes, and then we're we're back just gring

(08:43):
exactly exactly.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
It's a great day to get on that schedule. Of course,
you can get more information online hams Arborcare dot com.
That's h A M. M s Arborcare dot com. Tell
forh number eight six six five nine six five three
nine six. That's eight six six five nine six five
three nine six And Kevin. One of these weeks we
have to talk. I have to find this picture. But
somebody had posted on one of the websites I know

(09:05):
we've talked in the past about you know, you occasionally
get called in as an expert witness to to legal
cases and court proceedings. They use your knowledge and experiences
as a witness to kind of explain how this stuff works.
I saw interesting post somebody had maybe just real quick
and I don't know if there's a quick answer to this.
Somebody had been they tried to remove a tree themselves,

(09:28):
and there the tree went over and leaned as as
they chopped it, it leaned over and is hung up
on their neighbors trees and like the person was like,
what the heck can I do with that stuff? And
I thought, well, you should have called a professional to
begin with.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Now it's a problem.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
And you see that all the time. My guess is
they probably thought, well, i'll save some money in time,
and they're like, you are saving neither now, my friend,
are Yeah, And now.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
It's actually more expensive job because a hung tree is
you know, a normal tree plus you know, eight additional hours. Yeah,
because now you have high it up and suspend it
and you know you can't climb that tree. It's already compromised,
so you've got to climb the other tree. But how

(10:20):
stable is it? You know, there's just a whole bunch
of factors that nour in play that we're not in
play when that thing was stanning straight up.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
And that's the importance of working.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
Yeah, one of those you know, so much per hour
if I do it a little bit more per hour
if you started.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
It exactly, you're not helping you're not helping your arborage.
You're not helping Kevin out at by trying to give
it a start. As we talk about those type of things,
it's always a fantastic day again, whether it's you got
the oaks you want to get on the get on
the fall pruning schedule winter work. If you have trees
that haven't been assessed and looked at recently, what a

(10:59):
great day to have that done. You never know what
may be going on with those trees. Have Kevin and
the team at hams Arborcare come out and inspect your
trees if you've got things that are obvious. Definitely an
important day to get on the schedule as well at
hams Arborcare I cata just pick a phone, give a
call eight six six five nine six five three nine six.
That's eight six six five nine six five three nine six.
Mentioned the website Hamsarborcare dot com. That's h a m
