Speaker 1 (00:03):
And we continue tonight on OK Talk Live inside the
five oh six Pump, he goes pure market on a
Tuesday night Grand for X and don't forget to Tuesday nights.
Of course we should mention specials inside the five oh
six Pump. Tuesday Night means it is TNT Tito's Vodka,
tany great gin on special five dollars. They've got their
deli specials going until about seven o'clock tonight. Tuesday Night,
of course features the wingbar, and that's eight ninety nine
(00:26):
pound or two dollars off of the loaded nachos, which
I believe our next guest is a fan of may
have gotten something to go even Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
First time I'm excited Tuesday forward to man than you've
dropping on me.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Well, I kind of kind of heard it a little bit,
and I thought, you know, good for the head coach.
Good good dinner at the Schmidt household tonight.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Yeah, I'm cooking all right, so perfect.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Hey share your recipe. Well, Schminny, thanks for giving us
a few minutes here tonight. Of course, it doesn't get
any slower for you this time of year. But let's start.
Let's go back last Saturday, of course, a big one
inside the Alatric Center. A disappointing result at the end
of it. But if you take away that l come
of fifteen dash ten, what else did you see from
your club? What are you taking out of that coming
(01:10):
into this week now?
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Well, it was really close to what we felt like
coming off coming off the field.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
I felt like, you know, obviously.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Yards were tough to come by all night long, you know,
just the way the game settled in, I thought our
guys did a good job.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
We got off to a decent start.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
We went three and out, and then they did a
good job of flip and field position on the punt,
and then our guys fought out of our own end,
got it to midfield, and then Luke Silvernail had a
good punt too as well, pinned him inside the inside
the ten at the six yard line, and then Malchai
got the interception two plays later, and we went in
and scored, and we're up seven to nothing, and then
they went down got in the red zone, and I
(01:44):
thought we did a good job all night long of
just being able to bottle up some things that you
know all season long that they've been good at, just
in some of their their past concepts and things like that.
So to be able to force field three field goals
in the red zone was really big and important for
us to be able to keep momentum and then you know,
they get a field goal to go seven to three
and we come right back down, go all the way
(02:05):
down the field, have it first and goal a really
the two yard line and weren't able to get any points.
Was a huge you know, just sequence in the game.
You know, to be able to even get up ten
to nothing or excuse me, ten to three or fourteen
to three when you're in that type of that type
of game where just you know, first downs, let alone
you know, field position touchdowns, those types of things are
are hard to come by.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
But did a good job.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
You know, went into half seven to six and then
coming out of half, moved the ball down again. I
thought we moved the ball consistently, like we didn't go
three and out very much. We had twenty two first downs,
but we had to fight for everything that we got.
We didn't have any explosive plays, which is something we
need to continue to work on, and we had no
plays over twenty yards, but drove it down, got a
field goal, go up ten to six. They come back
(02:48):
later in the quarter, you know, off off of a
tip ball, some of those things that you know, just
bounces of the game, stuff like that. They did a
good job of getting their hands up in the passing lanes.
Comes to one of their defensive lineman. He makes it
of a catch and the good part is our defense
went right back out there and just you know, no
first downs, nothing, They go three and out kick a
field goal and it's ten to nine, and it really
comes all the way down to that last sequence inside
(03:10):
of inside of three minutes. And you know, we just
felt like, you know, I wanted to be able to
put the pressure on them, for them to have to decide,
you know, how to use timeouts, you know how many
possessions are left? How how what is their pathway to
be able to win the game, And you know, just
decided to you know, the best thing for us was
to be able to go try to win the football game.
You know, I said it after the game, man, it's
no risk and no biscuit. That's why I always like
(03:31):
to say, man, you got to be able to you know,
decide what you know, what message you want to be
able to send to your team and how you think,
you know, your best opportunity is to win the game,
and even after not making it, there's still two or
three pathways yet for us to be able to win,
even by not making the you know, the first down there.
But ultimately, you know, just gave up, you know, gave
up too much penetration and they got in and stopped us,
went down and scored, and then we had two more
(03:52):
opportunities to be able to go down and score and
obviously got down inside the thirty five. But couldn't you know,
couldn't punch it in at the end.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Obviously a couple of things you'd rather have go your way.
But when you step back, is that not only the
recipe to beat a team like that? And is that
also the recipe you're gonna need now this time of year,
going into your final two games and in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Yeah, I think offensively, you know, we can continue to
work on becoming more explosive. I think, you know, obviously,
you know, the strength of our team is up front.
You know the strength of NDSU's team is in the
line of scrimmage two as well. That was an ongoing
battle on both sides of the ball, and really probably
the the you know, both defenses got the got the
upper hand there. We were able to stay on the field,
which I thought was important. That helped our defense. Even
(04:33):
though we didn't score. We ran eighty one plays. They ran,
you know, really fifty two plays. Typically in a game,
if you run thirty more plays, you're gonna give yourself,
you know, an opportunity to be able to be able
to win the football game. And that was a product
of two things. One, we were good on third down,
both offensively and defensively. Were you know, held a ndsu
to to two of eleven on third down, which you know,
(04:53):
both of those were early in the or midway.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Through the first quarter.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
So after that they didn't you know, they didn't get
a third down the rest to the game in the
second quarter, in the second half. And then yeah, I
mean that's the recipe for us. We got to continue to,
like I said, develop some playmakers. I think the biggest
thing that we've talked about with our guys, our skill
guys on offense is that hey, there's yards that you're
gonna get that that are designed every single play, you know,
(05:17):
like within the within the design of the offense. Now,
after you get those yards. Now we want to find
guys who can get their own yards and you know,
break tackles that can you know, make people miss that,
can you know, do some things with the ball in
their hand. And I think we have a few of
those guys who got to continue to get those guys
the ball, you know, the BJ Flemings, the Christian Hopkins,
obviously Sawyer, you know those types of guys. But now
(05:38):
we need to keep developing some other guys too as
well that can continue to contribute as well.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
We were talking about it last week, how it had
been strange because you guys were coming off of your
first setback in a while. Now it's back to back setbacks,
but a big one on the horizon. How's the how's
the group responding? What's the movement like here the early
part of the work week.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
It's been good.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
I think, you know, you got to be able to, uh,
you got to be able to bounce back from some
adverse conditions. I think the one thing that's you know,
been positive with our guys is you know we haven't
really you know, gone left the game that where you
know it hasn't either we've had a positive result and
won the game or at least we've had the ball
at the end and had an opportunity to be able
to go down and win. So I think when you're
(06:15):
you know, in those types of games and uh, you know,
you have an opportunity to be able to be successful,
that there's still still a certain level of confidence. You know,
you go back to three or four plays and that's
typically going to be the difference between winning and losing.
So we really just doubled down with them, like, hey,
this is a partnership, you know. You know, all of
our coaches, everybody in our you know, I call it
the family business, is trying to partner with you to get,
(06:37):
you know, the very best out of you so that
we can, you know, help you become the best version
of yourself. We're not trying to control you. All those
types of things that you know sometimes you know can
happen in the player coach relationship. So I think that
part of it was good. I think, like I said,
you've got to be able to bounce back from some
adverse conditions, and you know, obviously a lot of us
put into that and you got to get gutted. But
then you know, obviously this week is really big for us,
(06:58):
we want to be able to extend our season and
past the regular season, and in order for us to
do that, we have to be able to go down
to Murria and and get a win.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
And you mentioned that with One of the things we
talked about was the benefit of having somebody like NDSU
to get yourself reset, refocused, and not to take anything
away or throw any slight on what's going on in Marie, Kentucky.
But they are on the opposite side of that spectrum.
Is it just now eyes inward, guys know that we've
got a chance to get right and then let's do
what we can to go down there and take it
all out on them.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
It's really been that the entire year.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
You know, you'll hear our guys in the media talk
about us versus us, and it's really about our process.
We don't talk about the outcomes. You know, even we're
talking about, hey, this weekend and how important of a
game it is, it's still about how we compete, you know,
Monday through Friday. It's about our daily behaviors, our daily disciplines.
And we talked about our guys. Hey, we with our
guys that we need to keep being able to do
(07:46):
that and make sure that you know our our daily
and internal standards are what's what's the most important thing
that we have because I think you know, if you
continue to do a good job with you know, your behaviors,
your disciplines every single day, that's how you're going to
reach your goals a score to take care of itself.
So we're we're in the process of, you know, just
preparing once again for Murray. I think you know this
is a what have you done for me late in
(08:08):
the business. You got to be able every week there's
a new story written. We got to go back and
get a bunch of time on task. A completely different
you know, organization and the one we played last week
with a lot of tight ends, big backs running the football,
you know, really trying to overpower you and control the game.
Now we're going to be you know, eleven personnel, a
lot of receivers on the field, a lot of our
po game, that kind of stuff. Defensively, you know a
(08:30):
little bit different as far as how they're built too
as well, you know, with with some more dbs and
that kind of stuff on the field. So that's the
challenge of our league, which is fun about our league
is that every single week, you know, you've got to
be ready to go. And you know you've seen it
already throughout the season. I mean, Indiana State's gone on
the road in one big games. You know, everybody's kind
of you know, has the opportunity to be able to
(08:50):
beat anybody in right now. I mean there's a there's
a huge group of people that you know, there's seven
teams in our league that are still you know, have
an opportunity and a pathway to the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
So these last two weeks are going to be a
lot of fun when.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
You look at it, and obviously we're talking everything is
inward right now. Can it be a good thing to
go on the road for this game where you get
out on Friday, it's just the group get up right
away Saturday morning and get after it.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Yeah, I mean it's really a swat team mentality. We
leave later, you know on Fridays. Right now, we play
at eleven am on Saturday, so we'll literally be there
for you know, twenty on boots on the ground, like
twenty four hours, you know, type of deal, which I
think is awesome for our guys, Like, hey, get there,
have a couple of meetings, go to bed, wake up, play,
you know, and be ready to go right away in
the morning, like we have to get off to a
(09:32):
good start. That's something we talked about with our guys
that this will be the earliest game that we've played.
I do think the game at Southern Illinois will help us.
We're basically flying into you know, the next nearest airports
or that we that we flew and we went to
Carbondale and then the game at Carbondale was at twelve
and this one will be an hour earlier. So it'll
be very similar as far as you know, the travel,
the road, you know, the timing and all those types
(09:54):
of things for our guys to be able to draw
some experience from.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
What's key early Saturday to avoid if there is any
hands of an old boy, here we go again.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
Yeah, I don't know if there's really you know, uh,
here we go again. I don't feel like any time
on the road that you know, there's been that that
we've had those types of you know games where it's like, hey,
we've you know, stubbed our toes on the road, or
there's some sort of common theme, you know. The way
we've played really honestly, Like I mean, every game on
the road minus the South Dakota game, and even there,
(10:23):
you know, we were up at halftime or we played well,
you know, coming on the coming on the field and
getting off the bus. So I just think, you know,
like I said before, it's it's us making sure even
on game day that we do a good job with
you know, our processes, lining up in the right technique
and the right leverage, you know, playing the right coverage,
you know, running the right play and making the right communication.
Like you can consistently do that, you know you're gonna
(10:45):
find success. And at times, you know, you don't go
through your process and maybe it's still a successful play
because the ball doesn't find you or the play doesn't
find you, But sooner or later that's going to catch
up with you. And I think that's something that we
have to continue to do. And like I said, our
guys have done a good job of that throughout the week.
I think a staple of this team has been how
well they've practiced each and every day. And that's not
just you know, our our team, that our travel team,
(11:07):
but that's our work team too, guys as well. And
we've obviously taken some of those guys every single week
and brought them with as they fit into our game
plan versus different teams. So I think that's something that
you know, has really helped them morale and kept our guys,
you know, kind of on edge a little bit and
kept them going. And our obviously our coaches have done
a good job with that too as well. Just understanding that,
(11:28):
hey man, practice is about performance, you know, and that's
how you're gonna get on the field. The games are
where you learn. After the games, that's that's where you
come back and talk about different things that you know
you could do better as a player, as a coach,
and all those types of things. So our guys have
really done a good job of honing in on that message.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
And it's simple for you. Now you've got two games left,
win to put yourself in the best possible position. But
a byproduct of that, you win too. Now you've got
yourself in the best possible position on the field going
into playoffs too.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
And imagine.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Yeah, and that's like I said, it's day by day
here for us. Like I said, we got to do
a great job of taking care of of everything that
we can do in our preparation to make sure that
we have a you know, a positive result on Saturday.
So everything's still in front of us, you know, and
our guys understand that, but you got to go down
and earn it.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
And that's the thing right now that you know.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
I think the mindset I think, uh, you know, just
especially if you're an older player, I think at this time,
like time is not your friend, you know what I mean,
Like your your your your football life is dwindling down,
you know. As far as those uh, those uh, those
spots or that. I always say, hey man, if you
have a light bulb for every one of the years
of your live and then you put those the same
amount of light bulbs for your football career, like it's
(12:33):
really small, and now it's for those guys, like it
becomes you know, that becomes real. So I just think
that mindset of, hey man, I want to I want
to be around these guys, I want to be around
these coaches. I want, you know, to be around the
family here as long as we can be around it
here going into going into December, there's that's definitely a
real emotion and a real thought going through a lot
of guys' heads, right now.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
Well, it might sound strange to say it's late in
the year, but with everything the way it's gone, it
all starts Saturday and we're going to be pulling for
you down to Murray, Kentucky. Thanks for coming into and
the best of luck we'll get a win.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
Yes, thanks Darren, You guys have a great night, all right.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
