Speaker 1 (00:17):
Good morning, everybody. Welcome to Healing Begins. My name is
Pastor Gale Krock, and I'm so glad that you've chose
to join me, so relax, say back. I don't know
if you're driving your car down the road or what
you're doing, but I have a guest on my show today.
Her name is Carly Charlotte. Say hello, Carly, Hello. So
(00:38):
we're going to talk today. The title is when Psychology
Is Not Enough? How did we meet? Charlie? Can you
tell us?
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Well, you kind of have to go back a little
bit before we met, and I'll give you a little
bit of backstory.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
I grew up with.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Abuse and some very complex trauma, and that continued into adulthood.
And I had a strong, reallyationship with God, but never
quite learned how to process the trauma and the pain
that I was experiencing. So I felt compelled to pursue
a career in helping other people. So I went into teaching,
and I taught high school, and I started out in
(01:14):
special ed and I got multiple degrees because in English
and math and history, because it didn't have to do
with the content, it had to do with I had
this desire to teach people that struggled to learn or
that felt they weren't good enough. And really, as I
went through my adult life, I saw that was a
pattern of me wanting to help people because I really
(01:35):
felt like there was the sense that I didn't get
that help.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
Growing up from a very young age, I.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Struggled with depression, anxiety, panic attacks from the abuse that
I experienced, and I never really had any way to
process it. I went on to get an additional degree
in psychology because as I taught, I realized I was
having many students and even teachers come to me with
emotional mental health issues, even though I was teaching them math.
(02:03):
And so then I started to see the importance of
the mind and how the experiences we go through in
our formative years especially can shape how we think about
the world, how we think about ourselves, and how we
think about God. And so I went back into a
different profession and started in social work in the family
(02:23):
welfare division, and I just saw so much pain and
so much trauma, and so I felt like I was
doing all of this kind of counseling with parents and
kids and.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Just all of the hurts.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
So for me, the logical next step was to go
to Michigan State to get my masters in Clinical Counseling. Well,
as I went there, there was kind of this parallel
journey going on in my life where I was helping
all of these other people with their mental health struggles
all while I was sinking. I was drowning in depression anxiety,
(02:58):
and in the meantime, I had become diagnosed with bipolar
depression and they put me on medication after medication after medication.
I went through years and years of therapy, and then
it kind of all just came to a breaking point
as I was seeing a psychiatrist and a counselor and
had for years, and I realized retrospectively, over the course
(03:20):
of five years, I was getting worse. I wasn't getting better,
and I was in peak physical condition. Having a degree
in psychology, I knew all of the reframing and the
meditation and the calm breathing and the how to visualize
and how to reframe, and none of it worked. And
so then I fast forward to I left the clinical
(03:44):
counseling program at MSU because God impressed on me like
none of this is going to actually help people because
it doesn't involve Jesus Christ, and I was at a
place in my own life where it wasn't helping me.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
So I could directly testify to that.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
In the meantime, I just stopped everything and waited on
the Lord because I pretty much had a breakdown. And
as I was going I found this new church that
I was going to and it's an epic community church
in Portland.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
And the Lord brought someone.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
To me who asked me to be on this ministry
that they were starting up, and it's called a Wake
and Hope Ministries. And it seemed kind of odd that
the Lord was putting me on a ministry team when
I had very little hope in my life at that time.
Even though I believed in God, I was suffering so
much with depression anxiety. I'd been diagnosed with PTSD, I
(04:38):
had panic attacks. My whole entire life was just I
was bounding in chains. Even though I knew everything physiologically
and psychologically what to do, and I'd been doing those things,
they weren't helping. So as we went through this process
of this ministry, forming this nonprofit Christian ministry, we realized
(04:58):
that everyone on the board for this minut was undergoing
intense spiritual warfare, and part of my intense spiritual warfare
was the attacks where I just felt like completely at
the lowest point of my entire life. And someone on
our ministry team board knew Pastor Gail and said, you know,
to the board, how would you feel about Pastor Gael
(05:20):
coming in and doing spiritual healing. He works for spiritual
care consultants and he can come in and do spiritual healing.
And so I was like, yeah, absolutely, I'm up for
it because I knew I have, like I said, I
have a strong belief in God, and I had prayed
several times you know that God would take my pain
and I really tried to forgive people and move on.
(05:42):
But I'd never been introduced to this in depth, intentional
process of processing grief and addressing the trauma and giving
it to the Lord.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
So he Pastor Gail.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Came in and did a day of the spiritual healing
for us, and it was like all of the pieces
in my life just at the moment fell into the
puzzle and it just like lit up because for me,
it was the missing piece. I already had the scientific
background to say, neurologically, physiologically, this is how we think.
(06:18):
This is how our thoughts affect our behaviors. But what
Pastor Gale helped to show me was how it's very
similar to cognitive behavioral therapy and that how we think
affects how we feel. Except for the difference with spiritual
healing is that we look at it through a Christian lens,
through a spiritual lens. So my thoughts were actually Satan
(06:42):
affecting my mind, false beliefs, lies on godly thoughts that
I was having that affected what I thought about myself,
what I thought about the world around me, and what
I thought about the people that had you know, caused
me trauma growing up through my life. And so what
it does then is and it teaches you how to
identify those things and replace them with spiritual scriptural truths.
(07:07):
What does God say? And the biggest difference for me
is that I started fighting a battle with a spiritual
weapon for once, instead of fighting it with a man
made weapon such as psychology or even medication. And so
when I got introduced to him, everything fell into place,
and immediately God put on my heart all of these
(07:27):
things were kind of just going paving the road before me,
and I felt compelled I reached out to Pastor Gale
and I said, Jesus wants me to come and learn
from you, because this is absolutely what I was called
and made to do, and the testimony that I've lived
through can help to testify. And that's because if it
worked for me, it worked after all of these things
(07:48):
that didn't. And so that's why I felt so passionate
about it, because it is the key to healing your
spirit and your soul and your body, which then gives
you whole healing.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Yeah, that's very good, Carly. Interesting thing enough, if you're
listening out there, we're going to title this when psychology
is not enough. Now, having said that, if you want
to learn more about the process we're talking about, if
you go online and on Amazon dot com and you
look up my name, you can find two books. You
(08:20):
can call it the Heart of Healing. One's called The
Heart of Healing and the other one is called The
Heart of Healing, a six week Healing Journey, And both
of those books would be very excellent. If you wonder
what Carly's talking about, how this really fit. Really, I
would call it filled in a gap for you, a
gap in what she really needed. The psychology had helped,
(08:43):
the education had helped, but there was that missing piece
that would make the world a difference in her healing process.
And that was the heart of healing. Because God's heart
is to heal you. That's a missing piece or the
missing link as they would so to speak. So how
has this affected you as you have gone through your
(09:05):
own healing process? Can you tell a difference?
Speaker 2 (09:08):
I can tell a huge difference because, first of all,
through this whole process, and you know, God called me
to the belief you do not have bipolar depression and
that these feelings that you're having are symptoms of all
of this trauma that you have that's unresolved.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
But for me, not.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Only did the healing help to heal my hurts, but
it helped to identify, like some of the core issues
I was struggling with that I didn't realize I was.
And for example, that would be that I really blamed
God instead of I mean really, when I got to
the bottom of it, I had lost hope because I
didn't believe that God had protected me through the different
(09:50):
abuses that I experienced. When it really came down to it,
I felt like I didn't realize that all this time
I was angry at God because I felt like he
allowed these things to happen. And as I learned more
about the spirit of God, about the heart of God,
about that we can't compare God with our human father
(10:12):
or our human relatives. It's completely a different kind of selfless,
sacrificial love. And so then it allowed me to then
place the blame where it needs to be, which is
on Satan, who is trying to keep me from God's
purpose for my life.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
And so it's.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
Completely given me this restored hope, this unshakable belief that
like I don't believe that lens that filter that was
not clouding my judgment before, that somehow God is not
good enough, or that he can help people but just
not me. And I've just come to terms with realizing
this is a fallen world and man has free will
(10:49):
and all of the blame belongs on Satan. It also
has showed like an outpouring of like where your testimony is,
where your pain is, where your he is, that is
often where God will call you to minister. And so
the number of people that have literally God has been
working in their lives and they've just stepped out that
(11:10):
have had similar experiences I as I have and I
neither one of us knows it until we talk, and
that I'm like, oh my word, I know exactly why
the Lord sent you to me. So it's given me
this unshakable sense of identity of who I am in Christ,
but more importantly, how God feels about me. And so
(11:32):
it puts into context when things happen. I know that
I'm protected, I know that I have a loving Father.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
What were some of the spiritual care tools that really
helped you in your healing process? Can you zone in
or focus in on some of those?
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Yeah, So during the spiritual care process, there are what
we call I am statements, and so growing up and
living in this world, there are faults, you know, experiences
or words that people speak into us or onto us
and say who they think we are, and we come
to believe those things. And trauma actually also causes us
(12:10):
to have false beliefs about who we are, whether we're
shameful or unworthy. And so these I am statements. There
are different I am statements about specifically what does God
say I am? What does he say? We're made in
the image of God, So what does he say I am?
And so then what those Because I'm a very process
(12:32):
oriented person. For me, when people would say, well, pray
and give it to God, and I was like, well,
what does that mean? Well, for me, this wasn't was
It was a nice breakdown of how to actually do that.
So I had this feeling of like, I am fearful.
Right because I went through this abuse, I am fearful,
and so for me there was this belief that I
(12:54):
was fearful.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
But what does God say?
Speaker 2 (12:56):
God says, I am strong, he says, for I did
not give you a spirit of fear, but of power
and of love and of sound mind. So then what
I started to do is have the real tangible ways
to build new ways of thinking about who I am
in this world and who I am in Christ. So
those I am statements were really helpful to guide me
(13:17):
in a direction of how I can make sure that
I am speaking biblical truth into my own spirit.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
How was I say interhaling process. As you went through that,
can you share a little bit how the spiritual care
interhaling process affected you.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
One of the things that I like about the interhaling
process here is that what kind of supersedes everything is.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
The Holy Spirit. So while you do have a clearly.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
Laid out plan for the process of how healing takes
place with the forgiveness components and identity in Christ and
then getting rid of on godly beliefs and generational curses
and those kinds of things. To me, the fact that
I could always tell that as I was going through
my sessions that Sharon and the prayer partner in the room,
(14:08):
we're constantly seeking the Lord and going in the direction
of where the Holy Spirit what I was saying. And
it was wonderful because there would be times that I
would say, like, hey, I left this last session and
I just felt terrible and I was really struggling, and
I don't understand because I thought it was doing good.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
And right away Sharon.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
Was like, let's talk about spiritual backlash when you're going
forward and Satan wants to come from behind and pull
you back into where you're at. So for me, it
was like this spiritual mentorship that showed me how you're feeling,
this is part of the process, and here's what you
can do. And she actually gave me a prayer to
pray and some scripture to be able to speak against
(14:49):
that and rebuke that. But I love that there is
an actual process. It's quantitative in that it's measured.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
But it's also because they do scales of.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
Physiological things and how you're feeling at the beginning of
the process, in the middle of the process, and at
the end of the process. So the process is quantitative,
but it's also qualitative in that they have general prompts
that are very specific to the process, but they become
unique in their response given what I say in a session,
(15:23):
so that will take them in a specific direction as
to what scripture to guide me to. And so I
like the flexibility that while there is a tangible process
that they're following, it may look slightly different that the
specific scriptures or advice or prayers that they pray with
you or areas that they want to focus on with you.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
How about the podcast as it relates to the renewal
of your mind? Did you find those helpful?
Speaker 3 (15:52):
I did. I feel like it's a process.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
I think so many times people want to come into healing,
and that's why so many people are on so much
medication because they say, Hey, give me this pill, I
want to feel better. But it's not that simple. And
so what I like is that healing is a process.
Ken God heal you supernaturally in an instant. Absolutely he can.
He can do anything he wants to. But we also
(16:15):
know that our faith grows in times of trauma. Our
faith grows in times of struggle and in healing, so
God can also use these things to give us this strength.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
Did you find the podcast helpful?
Speaker 2 (16:31):
The podcasts were specifically helpful in that they allowed me
to process things in different locations in different times, so
I could listen to a podcast prior to an appointment
or prior to going through specific material, and what it
did is it allowed my mind and my heart a
little bit of time to begin to process and soften
(16:54):
before I actually came in to do the work itself.
I also love the podcast for the fact that they're
like topic specific, so when I was struggling with something specific,
I could look for additional follow up with going to
listen to a specific podcast, and that was helpful as well.
Speaker 1 (17:11):
You know, I just want everybody to know if you're
listening to this on radio, because we're on a couple
of different radio stations. You can find the podcast on
Healing Begins on the podcast channel, and we're on Spotify, Google, Amazon, everywhere.
You get your podcasts put in Healing Begins Spiritual Care,
and you'll pull us right up. We also have a
(17:34):
Healing Begin Radio YouTube Healing It Begins Radio YouTube. Well,
I will have all the recent radio programs on the
YouTube channel that you'll be able to listen to them there.
So the podcasts become vital as a tool. You know,
we just passed a landmark. Wow, I couldn't believe it.
I looked yesterday to see how many downloads we had
(17:56):
last month, and we had over fifteen hundred downloads. Now,
this is not like easy listening stuff. This is stuff
where you're going to take out your paper, your pen
and your pencil. You get to learn. Over seventy four nations,
over fourteen hundred cities. People from around the globe are
listening to this. And by the way, I want to
welcome them too because I know they're listening, and we'll
(18:17):
listen to this later. But there's just times when psychology
is not enough, when we actually got to go back
to how God created, how he made us spirit, soul,
and body. And if you read the Bible and understand
the scriptures, most psychological mental issues start in the soul first,
(18:39):
and then the mind, and so if you just get
treatment for your mind and you don't deal with the soul,
you just have a partial treatment and never ending counseling.
There nothing wrong with counseling, because counselors are needed. They're
very helpful. But if you're out there listening and you've
been through all the counseling, you've been through years of counseling,
(19:00):
I want you to know there's help and hope for you. Carly,
you want to lift up a prayer for those that
are needing healing mentally and emotionally.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
Absolutely, a Father, we come before you and Lord, those
who are listening, I don't know what they've been through,
but I can say, YEA, though I walk through the
valley of the shadow of Death, I will fear no evil.
I have been in that valley. I have been in
the depths of despair. I have tried everything in this
(19:32):
world that I knew how, And although I believed in you, God,
I could not feel you, I could not see the
truth of you. Lord, whoever is listening, I pray that
you would reach into their hearts and that you would
restore a desire and hope in them to seek spiritual
(19:53):
healing God. You can mend things that people think can
never be healed.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
Lord, where we are weak, you are strong.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
And I just pray that you would cover the person
listening and that you would show them what are the
lies that Satan has them believing that they're unworthy, that
they're unlovable.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
And I pray that you would.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Send them people and scripture and compel them to listen
to the podcast to hear what you have to say
about them. Abba Father. You created them. Not only did
you create them, but you created in mind good purposes
and good plans when they were going to live and grow.
You created that ahead of time with them specifically in mind.
Speaker 3 (20:38):
Abba Father. I pray that you would.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
Help them to realize how much you love them and
how much you are fighting for them. We just pray
that anyone that's listening that they would understand no matter
how great their pain is, you are greater. You are
a mighty God. You are rap the healer. You have
(21:01):
healed me, and I know you can heal them.
Speaker 3 (21:05):
Amen.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
Lord. I just also asked that you would break the
power of torment that some people are under in their minds.
In the name of Jesus is the name that is
higher than any other name, that at the name of Jesus,
everyne shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord. So in the name of Jesus, I
(21:27):
bind every spiritual force, every demonic force that has been
warring against your mind. In the name of Jesus, I
asked that the angels would go forth to minister to
those who shall be heirs of salvation. I asked that
you would bring light in the middle of the darkness, hope,
in the middle of hopelessness. Lord, I pray that people
(21:49):
would reach out to you one more time and say, Jesus,
I need you. And I pray for those today that
aren't right with you, that have walked away from God
because they've just given up. They say, God, I'm coming
back to you today. I rededicate my life to you.
Forgive me of my sins. Come into my heart, be
my Savior, fill me with the Holy Spirit. In the
(22:11):
name of Jesus. And Lord, I pray also that the
angels would go and strengthen those that are weak. Lord,
if you're dealing with a lot of mental issues and
a lot of darkness, it's easy to get tired and
it's easy to get weak, and I pray I speak
strength to those that are weak, and hope to the hopeless. Lord,
(22:32):
I thank you for what you're doing in the name
of Jesus. Now my email, I'd like to know how
