As we head into the holiday season, beware of the
fake storefront scam?

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Oh yes, oh yes, okay, all right, yes that these
things are popping up all over the city right now
and maddling you from Tampa, Florida or what it says
here Tampa. What's up?

Speaker 4 (00:40):
Just moved to New York for work. I am currently
in the South Bronx living with a friend for now.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
So all right, Madeline, what happened?

Speaker 4 (00:50):
So the whole thing is so yeah, But so what happened?
We found this up? Oh my gosh, I'm like, I'm
I'm so sorry, I'm like tripping on my words.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
No, it's okay, it's okay, take your time. I want
you to take your time.

Speaker 5 (01:05):
Okay, let me try this again.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
That's okay.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
We found a storefront that looked like a legitimate branch
of an Apple store, just a smaller version. There were
only two employees. They they both looked like, I don't know,
they came from a different country.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
All right, So what did you buy, Madeline?

Speaker 4 (01:26):
I bought an iPhone for myself. I bought Christmas gifts
for some friends and family, two iPads, three AirPod proses.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
You got?

Speaker 4 (01:41):
The deals were so great? Yeah, and like the AirPod
pros were only fifty bucks. Normally they're over two hundred and.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Okay, and there's no difference between Canal Street and this
little pop up. What was some of them? Was it?
Were they wrapped? Well? What was it?

Speaker 4 (01:57):
Absolutely identical plastic? The wrapping, the logos, the graphics, every
single thing looked legitimate.

Speaker 6 (02:06):
How did you realize that they were not real Apple products?

Speaker 4 (02:10):
I wanted to register my iPhone because that was the
one thing I was keeping, and you know, I went
onto the website to do it. It just wouldn't let me.
It wasn't recognizing the serial number. And then I called
customer service. They said, I hate to break it to you,
but it looks like you've been scammed. The serial number

(02:30):
does not exist and this is not a genuine Apple
as you can imagine. I was furious. So I immediately
walked back to the storefront, you know, the next day,
because it was already late.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
And you want your money back? Yeah, I can imagine.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
I wanted every penny back. I was so mad. And
it was gone. It was literally like there was no
trace of it.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
It was so the store was gone, rolled up gone. Okay,
well fake storefront scam here what it's called the fakes?

Speaker 4 (03:06):

who's also been trying to help me out with this.
She gets word from a friend of hers that there
is another pop ups a two miles away in Claremont Village.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Sammy, I'm sorry for stopping, Sammy. What's this about her
being in a car? She out in front of the building. Now,
is that what's happening here? That's what's happening. That's what
this is all meant. She's in her car right now.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
Yes, there is another pop up in Claremont Village where
I am sitting right now.

same dude running the same game just a mile away.

Speaker 2 (04:00):

first time. I know you've been speaking with Samantha all week. Madeline.
It is an apple store. Is that correct, Madeline? That's correct.

on speakerphone, go back into this store right now. First,
you're gonna tell me if you identify this, if this
is the same guy, and if it is the same
guy that ripped you off, I want you to do
me a favor. I want you to take your phone
and I want you to hand it to him with
the speakerphone on. Okay, do you understand, I understand?

go at this, but this is pretty are you parked
in front of directly in front of this fake store.

Speaker 5 (04:59):
Okay, okay, I'm at the door.

Speaker 2 (05:12):

it a window? Is it a what? Is it clear? Okay?

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
