Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning, everybody. Welcome back. I'm Ron Wilson, and you
are in the garden here on news Radio six' TEN
wtvn eight two to ONE wtvn eight hundred and six
to TEN wtvn talking about. Yardening we're broadcasting live today
From Columbus trees out In, sunbury and this is their
second season and they basically the name sums it. Up
(00:20):
It's Columbus trees and they the main focus here obviously is,
trees larger size, trees although they have some smaller ones as,
well but nice sized, trees ornamental and shade. Trees they
also do the, evergreens as we were talking With andrew,
earlier up to fourteen foot green giant. Arborvities you, know
that's been one of the hottest evergreens on the market
(00:42):
in the last three or four years because everybody's jumping
on that as far as using it for. Screening fairly
quick growing of all the, evergreens Especially, arbraviti that's one
of the fastest single stem so you don't have that
multi stem pull apart when it snows or ices or.
Whatever quick, growing and you, know we've also found about
with the spring of the green giants they started to
(01:03):
say spring, grove and that's another. One actually spring grove
came out before green giant, did so both are somewhat
sold interchangeably in the. Market is that on both of
those we see have seen very little bagworm activity and
we have seen little or no deer. Activity deer will
munch on, arbravity but it seems like the spring groves
(01:24):
and the green giants they have a tendency to stay
away from, that so you, know that's. Why and, they you,
know again fairly fast, growing so become one of the
most popular evergreen screens that you fight out there right
now for something very fairly, quickly and the spring grows
and the green. Giants you, know this is an arborvity
(01:44):
that can get ten twelve feet wide at the base
twenty twenty five thirty feet. Tall so it doesn't take
up a lot of space. Either so that's another great
thing versus using A norway, spruce blue spruce something like
that white pine quicker doesn't take up this must. Space it's,
dense you, know pretty much low to no brows as
far as the. Deer and then of course the art
(02:05):
LIKE i, say arbor viide sometimes can be nagged with
bagworms every now and, then and we. DID i haven't
seen myself reports on either one of, those so that's
why they've become so. Popular and of course now the
nurses can't basically can't get grown fast enough for, folks
but they have, them and they have big. Ones and,
again you, know one thousand dollars twelve hundred bucks or
(02:27):
so you can get on an instant And i'm talking instant,
screening you, know with three or four of those things
and really do a nice job with a living. Wall so,
anyway if you're interested in something like, that As i'm
sitting here right now And i'm looking across the drive
out into their inventory of all their bald and burr
lab trees out, There i'm Seeing japanese. Maples a lot
of folks always asking About Crimson king, maples The norway
(02:49):
maple with the burgundy, Leaves Crimson, spire all of. This
i'm seeing all of these out. Here i'm seeing weeping,
Spruce i'm seeing blue, Spruce i'm Seeing. Norway i'm seeing
some white. Pines i'm seeing crab, apples oaks of all.
Type and, again if you, want you, know to take
a look quickly before you come out, here go to
(03:10):
their website as columbustrees dot com and you can actually
order your trees. Online but they have all their inventory on.
There take a look at. It get pricing for you
the whole nine. Yards and by the, way if you
come out today or if you come out this, weekend
they've got a contest going. On you can register to
win a five hundred dollars, tree so like a two inch,
tree a six foot multi stem, tree a six foot.
(03:33):
Evergreen or if you win and you've got that five
hundred dollars certificate in your, hand you can actually apply
that to a, larger more expensive tree or evergreen should
you like to do. That so stop, out say, hello
and we've got hot dogs going off to my. Left
here we've got The Sunbury. Donuts to my. Right you
can get to See andrews's, house which is absolutely. Beautiful
(03:56):
and of course you can meet The grant all everybody
always likes to come out to Meet grant because it's
so much. Fun by the, Way grant on our web special,
Website Ron wilson online dot. Com TODAY i have did
you see the baby chicks in? Here? Oh they have
baby chicks that somebody's. Growing it looks like, it, raising
looks like. Doing BUT i have the you know, you
(04:17):
AND i always do the herb thing WHERE i get
to you to taste some of the. Herbs oh. Yeah
today listed on our special website are twelve herbs okay
that benefit your.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Chickens oh so you got to have chickens and herbs.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
So well with. You so if you're growing an herb
guard and you know, everybody are you into the chicken
yet in your? Backyard?
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Uh you, Know i've considered, it, truthfully not the price of.
Eggs you know who?
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Isn't, yeah but you know this is song has been
coming on for ten or twelve. Years, yeah and now
with the price of, eggs a lot more people and
it SO i think some people are even renting chickens
with the coop that you can put in your backyard
really oh, yeah or do whatever for your for your
free or your.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Eggs but it's Like amazon, delivery.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Yeah yeah kind. Of but h you know they actually
that there are herbs out there that you can feed
your chickens if you're growing herbs to help them. Along
so it's a pretty. Interesting So i've got that. List
if you're a chicken, grower raising, chickens whatever you, know
and you've got a nerve, garden you'll enjoy. It but
there's twelve different on there for your regular. Basils at
(05:19):
the top of the. List that's WHAT i was going to.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Ask are they can both chickens and humans?
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Eat oh, yeah all. Stuff it's all stuff that you
would be. Growing. Okay the only thing that's on that
list that you you got to be a little more
careful about that you wouldn't cook and eat is comfrey
other they're not All the rest of the things that
are on there are all things that you commonly. Grow that's.
Awesome and the basil makes their yolks darker. Orange ah
really yeah so and like, sage, yeah helps their the
(05:46):
respiratory if you put like time in their. Nesting, yeah
helps to keeople out of the mites and insects away
out of the nesting no.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
Kidding.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Yeah so it's a pretty interesting. List but a friend
of mine In Southern Ohigh Rita, hikenfeld who's a, nerbalist
put the list together for. Me she raises, chickens and
those are the top twelve. Verbs oh, wow that you
can use to help feed the chickens keeping the knife and.
HILL i had no.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Idea so if you want to do, THAT i bet
it makes the chicken taste better.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Too, well you know WHAT i asked, HER i, said you,
know can you actually IF i feed them a lot of? Sage?
Yeah like you, know it tastes like stuffing right? Exactly?
Yeah you?
Speaker 4 (06:24):
Know?
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Sure what the, heck, basil if you're going to make chicken,
palm you know you Get italian going.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
On. Yeah but the other thing is you can actually
take those herbs if by, chance those chickens make it
to the. Grill, okay you can make a bundle of
the herbs and toss them on the. COALS a and
that also adds to the. FLAVOR i love. It but
it's it's to help keep your chickens. Healthy, HERE i
want one more THING i want to show.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
You, okay have you seen this ARE ai generated on the?
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Internet? No what is? This it's a it's a picture
of these rex pagonias and if your gardener folks on
what rex pagonias. Are But i've been getting probably this,
Week i've probably got three or four folks asking where
CAN i buy? THESE i mean the whole website even
tells you how to grow them in an old nine.
Yards yeah they. Are it's AN ai generated fake, website
(07:15):
so that's not.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
REAL i was gonna, say are They are they even
remotely shaped like?
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Butterflies, Well i'm going to the leaves do somewhat resemble,
BUTTERFLIES i, See but someone's done this and they've got
these different colors of, butterflies of. Course and if you
leaf back through this, thing there's also one that says
cat faced. FLOWERS i see.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
That that's the FIRST i.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Thought, wow if you can get a cat to, grow
cat faced flower to, grow you're in the, money my.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
Friend there's the gardening industry now getting with you, know
and you know what we USE ai right now for
a lot of for you, know marketing and how to
write things and share creative ways to USE ai to your.
Speaker 5 (07:53):
Benefit probably some design stuff all that as. Well oh
the design that it's PHENOMENAL ai could come, Up i'm.
Sure but you start seeing stuff like this and they
actually have places where you can send your money in
in order the seeds to grow.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
It, no it's that's. Interesting you gotta be a little
bit careful to.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
Say that's pretty.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Scammy, yeah when you see stuff like that. There you
gotta be a little bit. Careful, anyway if you like that,
rblist go to our website Is Ron wilson online dot
com and you'll See rita's recipes there and you'll find
that on on the listing for. You and by the,
WAY i always pick a plan of the, week AND
i happen to pick a couple of trees this week
because Obviously Arbor day, weekend which, again, GRANTED i look
(08:37):
At Arbor day as A rodney dangerfield of all of
the holidays out, there Because Arbor day gets no. RESPECT i,
mean you think About Earth day and all, that and
then they're kind of rooted, together but you, know It's.
Earth Earth day is like the big, thing and then
Arbor day just kind of took a back. SEAT i
had a mixed. Up, now we just experienced.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
Earth, day, Right Earth day was The, wednesday, okay and
Arbor day was. Yesterday, OH i GUESS i didn't realize
And Arbor day started way back in the early nineteen. Hundreds.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
YEAH i remember Celebrating Arbor day in like every middle,
school these elementary growing trees.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
And, exactly and that's when everybody got the little. Seedlings.
Sure Then Earth day was created in nineteen seventy, ah
And Earth, day Which i'm all behind The Earth day.
Things oh. Same here you learn about all the different
things that you know to Help Mother. Earth, sure but
it took away From Arbor day because it's two days
in front Of Arbor, day stealing the Thunder. Man, yeah
(09:35):
so they're giving away the trees and stuff On Earth. Day.
YEP i don't get no. RESPECT i get no. RESPECT
i get no. Respect SO i call it The Rodney
dangerfield of all the awareness. DAYS i love it what
happens to be Your Arbor. Day but if you're looking
to plant, trees we're at the right. Place come and
see Us Columbus trees out In, Sunbury ohio On Blue Church.
Road it's a really nice, drive is beautiful AND i
(09:55):
can't believe all the development that's happening out here to
the new. Homes but come out and see if we're
going to be until. Noon go to the. Website check it.
Out It's Columbus trees Dot. Com quick. Break we come.
Back we're taking your. Calls i've got some tips to
share for you as. Well here on news radio six
to TEN wtvn broadcasting live today From Columbus trees out In, Sunbury.
Ohio stop, out say, hello go to their website if
(10:16):
you want to check it out. More It's Columbus trees dot.
Com and they're giving away a five hundred dollars gift
certificate toward a two inch, tree a six foot multi stem,
tree or an evergreen or you can apply that to
the purchase of a larger tree if you'd like to as,
well so it gets signed up for that one. Too
and they've got hot dogs and we got donuts and
the whole nine. Yards by the, WAY i actually forgot.
(10:37):
THAT i had to Ask Barbie, bletcher Our Queen, bee
to join me this morning for a quick segment to
give us an update on where we are right now
with this big honeybee. Loss and she is on, hold
and Bar, B i, apologize But i'm glad we got
you on. Here so good, Morning, yeah good.
Speaker 6 (10:55):
Morning and it's not just. Chickens bees and herbs go together.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
Too love herbs, well, yeah they love the, flowers, yeah
no doubt about, it. Yep BUT i you know a
lot of folks don't think about the herbs as far
as being you, know they're good for, us but they're
also very good for a lot of different, animals including the.
Chickens but, NEVERTHELESS i appreciate you spending time BECAUSE i
know we've been going back and forth and you've been
trying to stay updated on what's going on out. There
(11:19):
but right, now and we had mentioned last time you
were on with, us of, course this massive loss of
honeybees in The United, states and it's from WHAT i,
understand it's only The United states nowhere, else.
Speaker 6 (11:30):
Right, Correct, yeah, yeah we haven't heard those reports from other.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Countries, yeah so, basically right, now if you AND i
have the right figures, together about a sixty two percent
loss of honeybees in The United.
Speaker 6 (11:44):
States, yeah that's just commercial.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
Beekeepers and that's only the commercial.
Speaker 7 (11:48):
Beekeepers, Right.
Speaker 6 (11:50):
Yeah sideliners and hobbies are both about a fifty something percent.
Loss so you, know we're kind of used to the
hobby beekeepers having higher losses because we're still. Learning but commercial,
beekeepers this is their livelihood and for them to have
that hybrid losses is traumatic because they you, know they
(12:12):
know what they're. Doing they've been doing it for. Generations you,
know multi generational families have been keeping bees, commercially and
they don't lose bees like.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
This IF i read this, correctly we were talking like
a one point six was it? Million? Correct colonies?
Speaker 6 (12:32):
Lost, yeah we only had two point three million colonies
commercial colonies in The United, States so we've lost about
half of our. Colonies, unbelievable the ones that do the
brunt of the work as far as pollination.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
Goes, right fifteen they pollinated about fifteen billion dollars worth
of crops every, year and of course now it's going
to be a major loss. There AND i think on
top of, this you have to also look at that
they're not only used for the, pollinators but obviously for
the honey production as. Well six hundred million dollar projected
loss in honey production plus the cost of these beekeepers.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
To get new.
Speaker 6 (13:13):
Hives, YEAH i, mean you're, one you're gonna lose your
honey production that. Season it takes really all seasons for
a colony to build, Up so we've lost. That so
anywhere from four hundred to five hundred dollars per colony
just to you, know just traightplace the bees and to
get them. Started SO i know that will wipe out
(13:36):
some of these commercial beekeepers that.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
Is, Unbelievable so obviously, There i'm sure that they. Are you,
know we heard a lot about it about a month
and a half two months, ago AND i haven't heard
a whole lot. SINCE i, mean you're kind of trickling.
Out obviously they're trying to do some research on what's happening.
Here have they come up with anything at all at
this dage besides just the typical cocktail mix of, this
that and.
Speaker 6 (13:58):
Everything, Yeah and it's interesting because they've actually ruled OUT i,
mean mites are always a, problem but it's not mites
alone that are causing these huge. Losses so they've been you,
know sampling healthy colonies comparing them the two dead. Colonies
the might loss isn't any more substantial than it has
(14:19):
been in the, past so they can't just say it's.
Mites there's something, Else and it may be a virus you,
know that has morphed into something else that you, know
is just hitting the, bees just just LIKE covid with,
people you, know we can, take we can you, know
have several viruses that will make us, sick BUT covid
was so different that none of us had any kind
(14:41):
of toledge to. Us so it kind of took us.
Down it may be something like that with the.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
Bees didn't you tell. Me there's even situations, where, uh you,
know a lot of these keepers to kind of winterize
or to make sure they don't lose the hives over the,
winter put them in like, coolers so they just kind
of slow, down stay in the cooler temperatures are. Regulated
then they bring them, out fire back, up and then
start using them the springtime as far as taking them
around and pollinating and after they brought when they brought them,
(15:07):
out they were, okay but once they brought them, out
they were not. Okay.
Speaker 6 (15:10):
Yeah then when they took them in they, were they
were looking strong and. Healthy when they brought them out
of those, coolers there was no bees.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Left in, them so they had perfect perfect. Environment.
Speaker 6 (15:22):
Yeah, yeah they do that to keep THE mic pressure
down because the meat mites are not you, know. Replicating
the bee colony has slowed down because it's, cooler so
the mcs are not you, know reproducing as. Quickly it's
a great way to keep the bees going without having
THE mte pressure that we usually.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
Have you, KNOW i saw a quote an article THAT
i got the other day that says that the most
people think of bees as a. Nuisance do people think
Of Barbie butcher's a? Nuisance people who know?
Speaker 7 (15:52):
Me i'm.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Sure but, yeah you, know the.
Speaker 6 (15:56):
Beekeepers beekeepers are are necessary for, growers for you, know,
orchardists but it's just a necessary expense for. Them AND
i don't think they see the real value to having honey.
Bees it's like they have to apply pesticides and they
have to have, bees so they don't appreciate how much
(16:19):
work goes into keeping these colonies.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
Alive, Right and of, course you know a lot of
FOLKS i know are saying right, now well what about
the native? Bees don't can't they pick up the pace
or you, know if we increase the native bee, populations
and you, know we got those comments about that when
we're talking about the almond groves and the native. Bees
but you, know, again yes they do, that but, again
(16:41):
the honey bee is very important part of the whole
whole process as.
Speaker 6 (16:45):
Well, yeah bees can fly you, know two to five
square miles to pollinate native bees or only go a
couple hundred yards.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
Of the, most, right so they're.
Speaker 6 (16:54):
Tacked them up on the semi and you, know eight
hundred and sixteen hundred colonies Across United states can't do
that with nat to beef.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Unbelievable so at this stage we aren't for sure one hundred.
PERCENT i guess the other QUESTION i would ask for
you what about. WEATHER i, mean you, know we've had
some really changes in. Weather it's gotten, warmer stayed warmer
longer the. Spring you, know we had lots of, rainfall you,
know blah blah. BLAH i mean you think that is affecting.
Speaker 6 (17:20):
Them, saying and that's a great. Question there are studies
that have shown they've looked at golden rod and, soybean
and they've shown that climate change has affected the pollen,
availability the nectar availability in. Flowers so the quality of
the pollen is. Lower the next quality and quantity of.
(17:44):
Nectar oh my, gosh the quality and quantity of pollen
is reduced and the quantity of nectar is.
Speaker 1 (17:53):
Reduced SEE i remember you saying that To joe AND
i last. Fall we were AND i think we were
talking about golden rod and you instead of both at.
Text while we were, talking saying something, about you, know
the count was a lot lower than it because of
the way the weather had.
Speaker 6 (18:08):
Been, yeah and bees don't fly when it's cold and.
RAINY i mean they're not flying today.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
Much and they can fly when it's, RAINING i, mean
and then they don't want to when it's. Cold so,
YEAH i.
Speaker 6 (18:19):
Tell you what It's, uh you, know we need to
be pollinating when all the fruit trees are, blooming it's
cold and, rainy so they stay.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
Home so you, know, again if you've got fruit trees
in that and you don't get good set fruit, set you,
know you got to look at the weather as well
to you, know try to calculate that into you to
your loss as. Well talking With Barbie, butcher she is
our queen. Bee uh SO i guess at this stage
in the, GAME i, mean we just got to sit
back and. Wait but in the, meantime as people are
(18:47):
trying to get these regoing, AGAIN i, Know i'm Sure
Nina bagley and all the queen bee breeders out there
working overtime trying to produce more queen. Bees but just
try to do as much as we can to continue
to be as b e e friendly in our gardens
as we can to help help these all.
Speaker 6 (19:04):
Recoup plant those, sunflowers plant, flowering make sure you have
season long flowering, plants so spring through. Fall you, know
we can all do that to help cut back on
the grass and plant. Flowering it's not just gonna help
honey bees is going to help all the all the.
Pollinators so, yeah, plant plant, flowering, whatever, perennials, tree, shrubs, whatever.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
You got, it all, right so go.
Speaker 6 (19:33):
Ahead, YEAH i was gonna, say with swarm seasons, Coming,
yeah if you see a, swarm don't, panic don't beat at.
It you can call House. Stay beekeepers has swarm collections,
information so The Central Ohio. Beekeepers you see police stations
and libraries too as.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
Well, yeah don't don't hose them, down don't go after
with a broom or. Anything just leave them. ALONE a
lot of time will continue to move on because they're
looking for a new home if they don't get a
hold of someone that can come and collect them because
they want to collect those.
Speaker 6 (20:06):
Swarms, yeah we need those.
Speaker 1 (20:08):
Bees so we need those bees to help and kind
of an indicator that they're tough bees, too.
Speaker 6 (20:15):
Right, YEAH i mean they've survived the winter that, yeah
so it's the old. Queen she has survived the. Winter
so those are the ones we, need all.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
Right Barbie butcher will let you. GO i appreciate you
spending time with us this. Morning we'll get back with
you in another three or four. Weeks maybe we'll have
more answers as far as what's going, on and we
will continue to promote b e eing friendly in that.
Garden thank, you, Ma'am thank.
Speaker 6 (20:37):
You and keep those dandelions.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
Blooming you got, It Barbie, bletcher our Queen. Bee appreciate the.
Update all, right quick, break we come. Back let's, see
we've Got doug on. Hold we'll come back To, doug
and then we're going to talk to the folks At
Columbus trees. Again find out what's going on out, here
what's the, inventory and lots more. Questions broadcasting live today
From Columbus trees And. Sunbury stop out and say, Hello
we're going to be here till noon here on news
(21:00):
radio six to TEN wtvn talking to the yardy here
At Columbus trees out In. Sunbury are going to be
here till. Noon we'll stick around. Afterwards, also got to walk,
around take a look at all the nice trees that
are out. Here so stop out and say. Hello we got,
donuts we got hot, dogs we've got. Food we got
the whole nine, yards and LIKE i, said register to
win this five hundred dollars. Tree you can't beat. It
(21:21):
and of course you can't win unless you. Register so
stop out and say. Hello doug's been holding on for
a long, Time, doug good, Morning.
Speaker 7 (21:29):
Hey thanks for taking the, call right.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
PLEASURE i.
Speaker 7 (21:34):
Have a weed THAT i can't seem to. KILL i
have identified it as pouscillum, geranium And i've tried pulling.
Them that just seems to make them propagate. MORE i
have sprayed them with everything under the sun doesn't even phase.
Them and they were growing only where, really WHERE i had.
MULCH i think the mulch must have been. Contaminated but
(21:55):
now it's getting into the grass And i'm, thinking IF
i can't kill that stuff, solo, heck AM i going
to kill it when it's in grass in the. Lawn.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Yeah and then you're talking about the perennial. Geranium, WELL
i looked at.
Speaker 7 (22:09):
It i've Got i've pretty firmly identify it's Called poosillum.
Geranium it's definitely a. Weed it's not like a geranium.
Flower it's, uh it's it's listed as a. Weed it
doesn't grow much more in about eight inches tall or.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
So, yeah it's it's an, invasive it's very it's Very
once you get it, growing you can't hardly get rid of.
You like you, said it's hard to get rid. Of
have you had any luck with a total vegetation killer
like kills, all concentrated round, up anything like?
Speaker 7 (22:41):
That, Yeah i've. Used, Yeah i've used the round up you,
know weed and grass and, spectrocide you know equivalent that
kills all doesn't even phase this.
Speaker 1 (22:53):
Stuff, wow if you come you know, what have you
tried using a a surfactant before you use? That? Also
are you're not usually ready to use or right you're
using to?
Speaker 7 (23:07):
Concentrate, NO i just it's just you, know the bottled
stuff and.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
That you that you pump by.
Speaker 7 (23:13):
Hand it was a battery. Pump one of them was
a battery. Pump the other ONE i think you had
a spring loaded pull.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
Rod, okay here's the here's the problem sometimes with those
look at the. Percentages sometimes those are pretty low as
far as the. Percentage so if you use like the,
concentrate you'll get a much better higher percentage of the
chemical and then use a surffactant if it doesn't already
have it in the, bottle but use a surfactant which
(23:42):
helps it to penetrate that, foliage because sometimes that's. Tough
and the thing to remember is they are spreading by
rhizomes under the, ground all, Right so as you're, spraying
you may kill what's up there and some of or
most all of the, rhizomes but you're not going to
get them. All so a lot of times it takes
multiple applications before you finally get rid of what's there
(24:03):
now once it gets out into the, turf and then
of course now you're using a broad leaf weed, killer
and again use this a fact and it's going to
take multiple applications. Again timing, wise you, know earlier in the,
spring the better off you're going to be when it's,
tender or in the fall when it's starting to shut back,
down and the fall is a great time to go
(24:24):
after it as. Well and keep that in mind. Too
but try using that surfact that and use the concentrate
where you mix it yourself rather than those ready to use,
it because your concentrate is going to be a lot
the percentage of the chemicals can be a lot higher
in that and should give you better action that, way.
Speaker 7 (24:42):
TERRIFIC i think that's going to be a big. Help.
Speaker 1 (24:44):
Banks, hey let me know how it works for, you. Seriously,
okay YEAH i will, yeah, okay, yeah get back with.
ME i appreciate. It good and good luck with it
talking To, uh we're here at The Columbus trees talking
With Mike siebert and of, course, uh we'll talk with
my And andrew at The home And Garden. Show how
that turned out for.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
You absolutely. Fantastic the number of people that stopped by said, hello,
obviously as you, know we've been here a. Year, yeah
so it was a Great we weren't here when twenty
Four Garden show was, around so it was our first
chance to be, there and a lot of people found us.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
There, well there's two huge trees that you had in.
Speaker 3 (25:20):
There there were two well and an on air personality
that was helping pull.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
People. YEAH i don't know about, that but those two
trees were. Phenomenal they were also of it into the.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
Rafters those trees were very, big and we have some
of their brethren out here amongst our thirteen hundred plus
trees that people can come Walk.
Speaker 1 (25:39):
So if somebody a lot of folks have walked up
here today, saying you, know we need to add a
couple of trees to our, yard to our. Lawns we're
out to see what you got out? Here what do
you what helps you the most when somebody comes out
here looking for a? TREE i, mean what should people
bring with them when they come? OUT i, mean SHOULD
i bring? Pictures should bring a? Plot plant in my?
House what helps you?
Speaker 3 (25:59):
Out really really good. Question. Uh Google earth is an
amazing tool for. Us, obviously if somebody has, pictures it's
a huge. Help what we really need to know is
what kind of space we're working, with what kind of
goals they? Have are they looking for something that's going
to be pretty in the spring outside the family room?
(26:21):
Window are they looking for? Shade so just just come
in with with what is your goal and and give
us a rough idea of your property. Size, again we
can pull it up On google and do some great measurements.
There but the two biggest THINGS i think would, be you,
know how much space do we have to work with
when that tree gets? Mature and what's what's the? Goal
(26:42):
is it? Shade is it? Beauty is it? Pollinating you,
know those things got?
Speaker 1 (26:47):
It we're talking With Mike. Sebert we're At Columbus. Trees
one more, break we come. Back we'll continue talking With
mike about the availability out here planting right? Now when
is the best time to plant planting procedures a whole nine?
Yards see what the what do he has to say about?
That as what do they do to make sure that
these are going to be successful for? You broadcasting From
Columbus trees And. Sunbury go to the Website Columbus trees dot.

So this is for the little ones of the. Crowd
we're we're looking for those budding arborists that might be
coming out with their, parents a little scavenger hunt for
them to go around and answer some questions about. Trees
come back, up get a little budding arborist badge and
take home a little small popular.
Speaker 1 (28:07):
Sapling cool just in time for post Arbor.
Speaker 3 (28:11):
Day, absolutely it's an Arbor day, celebration That Arbor day
that they'll remember.
Speaker 1 (28:15):
FOREVER yea always say Raw Arbor day is The Rodney
dangerfield of all these.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
Days it's no, respect.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
It's no respect. WHATSOEVER i grew.
Speaker 3 (28:22):
Up about thirty miles From Nebraska city where The National
Arbor Day foundation Is.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
Headcourt, absolutely that's where it all. Started. Yep, yeah that's.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
It.
Speaker 1 (28:30):
YEAH a long time ago and An Earth day came, along.
Speaker 3 (28:33):
Yep And Arbor day was. Forgotten Arbor day was.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
It's kicked, out kicked by the. Wayside. Anyway talked With Mike,
sebert and this is a really cool way that you're
doing this because it's what you this is your. Specialty it's.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
Trees it's, trees really big trees planted in your, yard
fifteen to twenty years of, growth potentially on some of
these you can you can leave your house one day
with no trees in your front yard and the next
day have trees that look like they been there for
ten or fifteen.
Speaker 1 (29:01):
Years AND i talking to. Her one of your customers
come up SAID i found. ONE i got one picked.
Out so obviously you can won't go through and take
a look to pick out your own tree or, whatever
or you can go online and shop as, well which
is kind of unique for picking them. Out but you,
know when you think about place like this and the
inventory you've you've got most of the trees that we
would want for the area. Covered, yeah when your inventory.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
We've GOT i think we tipped one hundred and ten
species this year when the, rest when the totality of
our spring trucks came, in probably thirteen hundred trees on. Property, wow.
Unbelievable it's a real. Joy if you if you're listening
to this, show you're into, gardening you're into your. Yard
(29:42):
it is a great experience to just come out and
walk the. Property you see something you, like you see
something that looks, neat but you don't know what it.
Is ask one of the tree consultants will help you
give you the details on that, tree you tag, it
put your name on, it and we're planting it in
your yard inside of three to four.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
Weeks, now we don't have to have you plant, it,
right Because i'm seeing somebody go by with a bobcat
with a hemlock on.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
There, yep we don't have to plant. IT i think
when you see the size of some of these root,
balls you're, gonna, oh you're gonna wish we had.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
When you shove the shovel down in the, Ground you're
gonna go give them a.
Speaker 3 (30:17):
Call. Right but we do have carry. Away, yes if
it's something that you can you can handle and think
you can plant, yourself there is a thirty percent discount
to take it away on your.
Speaker 1 (30:27):
Own, interesting, now how about the guarantee IF i plant.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
It guarantee if you plant? It is you do forgive that?
Guarantee it's it's there's no one year guarantee on stuff
you take away and. Plant and it's just you, know
it's not that we don't trust you're gonna plant, it,
Right it's just we can control more when we plant
it to give it its best. Chance and it's.
Speaker 1 (30:46):
A one year guarantee if you, plant but you add
on to that guarantee if we use a special soil
amendment or.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
We have a soil amendment called verma Cast i'll get
real geeky on you. Here it is a combination of
earthworm cast. Things you might want to explain what that
is to green.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
That's just worm.
Speaker 3 (31:03):
Poop, yeah, Yeah so earthworm castings an enriched biochar, matter
which is compost that's been burned in a low oxygen
burned to really really increase the. Nutrients and then the
last thing is is millions of micro organisms in fungi
that create a healthy culture for the roots to establish
(31:23):
faster breaks down the, clay and it extends your warranty
from one year to three.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
Years can somebody buy just?
Speaker 3 (31:30):
That you can come in and buy just. That absolutely
so If.
Speaker 1 (31:34):
I'm doing planting in addition to the trees and, ALL
i can buy that for.
Speaker 3 (31:37):
Me to use all My you can come out and grab.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
That, wait come in a. Bag is that a great?
Speaker 3 (31:40):
Now we get it by the. Palate it's a gentleman
how To Purdue university that's built his business on it over,
there and we get it by the palate and we
take a three gallon bucket out to every job site
for each. Tree so, yeah we'd send you away with
a small bucket of.
Speaker 1 (31:54):
It cool talking With Mike Mike sebert and of course
It's Columbus trees and they're In, Sunbury. Ohio and it's,
aid what about five seven minutes from the, expressway nice little.
DRIVE i can't believe how many homes are out here. Already,
well why is this place developing a?
Speaker 3 (32:09):
Hurry there's a reason that the owners were looking at
this property and thrilled and blessed when they got it
because of how fast it's growing in this.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
AREA i told everybody this, MORNING i, mean it's worth
the trip to come out here just to See andrew's.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
House that was one of the caveats they were looking
for properties that had a house on site For andrew
and his wife and boys to. Live it really does
give you the feel of just coming to the farm
and the family owner is there with.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
You that's very. Nice as a matter of, Fact grant's
been over there three or four. Times andrew didn't even
know it been inside and looked around, everything.
Speaker 3 (32:43):
So probably tapped out the bar that's down in the
basement and.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
Tell us about That so who's chickens are in?
Speaker 3 (32:50):
Here so that Is. Carrie Carrie's andrew's. Wife she is
our chicken. Expert she has six species of two, each
all already out by the. Barn they're producing about ten
eggs a.
Speaker 7 (33:03):
Day.
Speaker 3 (33:03):
Cool we all go home at the end of a
week's shift with eggs and she just got Fifteen easter. Hens,
so believe it or, not these hens were born On.
Easter there's six species Of easter chickens in, there and
they will produce colored. Eggs, cool very.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
Nice so if we come, out we get free.
Speaker 3 (33:27):
Eggs, well you get out here by a tree and
we can Tell i'm starting to stretch.
Speaker 1 (33:33):
It one last, thing all, Right If i'm looking for
a specific tree that you might not have on, hand
can you actually go and find that for?
Speaker 7 (33:41):
Me we.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
Can we have resources obviously with our other Two indiana.
Farms we share inventory between the three of us if
we don't have it across the three. Locations depending on
the time of, year, obviously as you, know you don't
want to dig trees in the summer when they're actively.
Growing but we can get them on our spring dig
from our or our fall. Dig so, yes we can
more than likely locate one and get it for.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
You but more than likely with all the Inventory i'm
seeing out, there you've got What i'm looking.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
FOR i can't imagine that we.
Speaker 1 (34:11):
Don't now these were MY i. HAD i did not
look at your inventory BEFORE i did. This every WEEK
i picked plants of the, week, okay, right put it
on our special, website and for our day, weekend The
Rodney dangerfield of all the, HOLIDAYS i picked two. Trees
i'm gonna see if you have, These, Okay, Burroke.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
BURROKE i know we have had. THEM i had someone
come in the other day that was an absolute oak,
fanatic and they did buy a couple. Oaks but yes we.
We if we don't have one on, PROPERTY i know
we do with the other. Farms my favorite tree of
absolutely the, burroke is one that we Have Ginko's ginko's
(34:51):
galore out. Here we have a whole females, Right Uh,
no they would be the opposite for those of you
that didn't get that. Joke the male is the one
that does not drop the seeds that end up smelling.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Terrible unless you like eating those and roasting those absolutely
absolutely delicacy in some.
Speaker 3 (35:09):
Countries it's and it's an acidic reaction of the casing
of the seeds starting to. Deteriorate so you, know once
you get the seed, out you're.
Speaker 1 (35:16):
Good and acidic reaction of the. Case that's it means
what it. Is BUT i, mean, yeah that's that's. GOOD
i just always said it just. Stinks.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
Yep but most people think that great.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
Tree but again the gink AND i think they asked
fifty arbors one, time you, know fifty years from, now
after everything is, changing what one tree will still be
on this Planet? Earth and they all said the, ginko, yep.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
YEP i mean they're hundreds of year old and absolutely
striking in the.
Speaker 1 (35:42):
Fall absolutely and one last One london plane tree, exclamation.
Speaker 3 (35:49):
