Speaker 1 (00:00):
Tack into the latest in tech and how it affects
you and your world. This is Tech Talk Tuesday on
Wood Radios, West Michigan Live.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
All right.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Outage is the word of the day. It feels like
we're doing this more and more lately. Here it is,
it's happening. It's not the same thing as happened a
couple of I guess a couple of weeks back whenever
this this flaring up. The original Amazon outage we're watching

(00:35):
now is a company called cloud Flare that is down. Now.
What is a cloud Flare? What's it do? And why
is this happening. That's part of the conversation I'm going
to get into with a good friend, Trent. Can it
be from Grand River Tech and Affordable Ie Store in
grandvill Trent, let me ask you and bring you on
to talk about this you just mentioned to us off

(00:57):
the air. We got the word it is cloud flare,
What does cloud flare do? And can you can you
help walk us through We're what we're saying happen because
it's taking out folks that use these apps and some
of the places where we stream, like Accent, we know,
chat Cheep, GPT is down and some of these other websites, folks,
the midwesterners down. It's not just apps that use this,

(01:20):
it's it's a lot of different people. It sounds like.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
We access some of the more secured systems where we're
down as well. What cloud Fair is is it's essentially
an internet company that deals with security and also efficiency.
So cloud Fair caches websites, caches data so that it
can be quickly accessed different parts of the country. Cloud
Fair also handles a large percentage of internet security as

(01:53):
the first line of defense, the firewall. You might say
when you access a website, are you a robot? Are
you a hacker? Are you legitimate user? Kind of thing.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
So it's a very important service. It's very helpful. It
is a good service. And the stat that I saw
was twenty percent of all Internet traffic goes through cloud Fare.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
So service itself.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Is not necessary for things like x maybe on the
back end, like their internal servers are probably working good.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
It's that initial first door that says let you sign in.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Or when that link is down, and if that's down,
then it's as full services down because you can't get
into there. So it's the front door is locked to
get into the house of all these services is where
this problem is coming from.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
So it could be any like I said, it could
be any of your favorite apps or or websites. It
could be any one of them. And essentially they're under
a tech talk about what that attack might be, what
it looks like, and is this like a denial of
service that we constantly hear about our hackers trying to

(03:01):
exploit some vulnerabilities. What's happening in if you were to guess,
I don't know if we actually have the answers, yes yet.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah, Justin.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
They're not giving a specific answers yet. They're just saying
unusual spike in traffic. I mean, this is a firewall, right,
this firewall handles everyday users. So if there's an unusual
spike in activity, man, it sure looks like a hack
attempt of some sort. We'll know hopefully later, hopefully released that.
But that's what it looks like. It is a scary part,

(03:31):
Justin is it's not resolved yet. It is still an
up and down thing. We don't know where this is going.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Justin.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
We're living through a live if it's true, you know,
if it's real, we're living through a cyber war. Somebody
behind the scenes is trying to fix us, trying to
resolve this, trying to get stuff working again.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
That's my next question is this Is this a private
you know, hacking group, isn't an individual? Is it a
and some of this way, I guess we may not
even know. Is this a foreign country? You know who
who might be responsible? And if it is some foreign cousions.
There are a couple of names out there around one

(04:09):
of them North Korea, China, Russia. There's a few of
them that are that are kind of like a handful
that we're known for doing this type of thing. Who's
got that capability.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Justin I don't know who it is, We don't know
if it is a foreign attack. It's probably a little
dangerous to speculate. But as far as who has that ability, uh,
there's a lot of people in this world that have
ill intense and have the ability to.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Do this because it doesn't take rocket science.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
If they had the right credentials or the right system
to do this, the right viruses infected into average Joe's
computers in the US, old lot of security computers.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Let's just say to us to overwhelm their services. It
doesn't take a you know, major world power to do this.
And that's the scary part with these these these hacks.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
If it is a hack, it can be done by
a smaller actor if it is not a large state actor.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Hey, I'm looking at the screen right now on down detector.
If you go to downdetector dot com, that's where you
can see this information. But they centrally, they have people
reporting what websites are having issues and what's not. Cloudflair
obviously on that list. Amazon Web Services also being affected, Twitter, Rex,
Open Ai, Spotify, Claude which is another AI chat, GPT.

(05:32):
We've mentioned that Google Truth, Social Canva, which is a
program we use to create things, Zoom which does a
lot of web Square, Door, Dash, Uber, YouTube, Microsoft, three
sixty five ups, Grock, you name it. And I even
see Lake, Michigan Credit Union on this list as well

(05:53):
as Amazon itself. So there's a long list of companies
that are being effected impacted by this. And again it's
not just when stuff like this happens. It's not just like,
oh that's inconvenient, that's a little glitch. We don't want
to see anything. I like to get on YouTube and
watch cat videos, it's it's a lot bigger deal. And

(06:18):
this type of thing, if they find vulnerabilities they can exploit,
they can get into in the future and do it
again and again and again. And that is really the
future of warfare that we're up against, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
Yeah, that's true, Justin And it's also too even if
cloud fare a twenty percent is a massive percentage of
the Internet's routed through them that's affected by this, But
it's not just twenty percent of the Internet affected.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
It's a snowball effect of all the websites.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
That you know go down, because that if X goes down,
or if some of Amazon services go down, many many
other businesses go down, a much higher percent go down
than just what that service is needed.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Trent, can it be affordabilized or like mis can drive
in stand out the biggest probably the biggest story of
the day so far, uh well, other than the Epstein vote,
which apparently looks like it's going to take place a
little bit later on today. So we'll keep an eye
on this and for the latest the latest updates. Make
sure that you stay up today. And we had lots

(07:23):
of other things to talk about today, some of it
I may save for next week, but let's get into
AI real quickly. There's talk about an AI bubble. I
think this may need a little bit more time to
unpack and get into and we'll have to maybe do
that next week. But some of the conversation Trent is

(07:45):
really centered around is AI too overvalued in the stock market?
Are they going to be able to do some of
the things that they want to be able to do it?
Are they having you know, is there going to be
a problem with some of that? Is there an issue
with getting kind of some of the things done now?

(08:05):
I don't know, This is just anecdotal. I've been hearing
the conversation about this, and then I, you know, we'll
use chat, GPT and some other things that do AI
for little tasks here and there. But I've noticed lately
chat GPT isn't as sharp as it used to be.
And I'm just telling you, like this is my just
my personal experience with it. I don't know what everybody
else and whether that's you know, scientific or not, but

(08:29):
take that for what you will. But I've noticed that.
And at the same time, we're also seeing people like
Instagram rollout a brand new service. They've got AI in
their in their photos now and creation. And by the way,
there's there's some scandal on that we'll talk about here
too in a second. And the number one country song

(08:49):
in America, according to an article now from Barons, is
an AI song. I don't I don't know if a
country station here is playing it or now, but of
course that's probably downloads. On a chart called Walk My
Walk by Breaking Rust and Artists with No Identity, widely
reported by US media to be powered by generative AI technology,

(09:12):
made it to the top spot on Billboards magazine chart
ranking digital sales of country songs, according to data published Monday.
I've never heard of them, but as I mentioned, AI
seems to be there might be a bit of a
bubble at the same time. These are some of the
things that are happening as we speak.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
Trent, justin so think about this.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
AI is the future, right, AI is coming, with we
like it or not, whatever it's coming. But the pace
of deployment is really where the issues. Think about electric
cars something we can all envision a little easier. Right,
electric cars might take over twenty percent of cars in
ten twenty years. Right, Whether we agree or not, you know,

(09:56):
people will probably want that or the technology be there
to make it work. But if people like Forward, who's
invested billions of dollars into it up front, when it's
not really ready, the technology is not perfected, people aren't
ready for it, or the technology is not fully there,
doesn't matter how much money you pump into it, you're
not going to change that natural process of business and

(10:18):
technology and people's interests and comfort zone.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Those have to go hand in hand.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
The stock market feels like it's propping up AI as
like the crazy thing to invest in that's going to take.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
Over the world to be extremely profitable.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
Now their financial analysis are saying, look at it might
be a while till we're profitable if we achieve this
agi artificial general intelligence goal, which we don't have no
idea when that's going to happen.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
So a lot of fear that's legit.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
Are we a little bit putting too much into AI
short term where it's not going to pay. It's got
to pay justin you got to follow the money. If
it doesn't pay these investments, it will fall flat because
it has.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
Trent can there be affordable eyes store like miss can
drive in Standale and the folks at crowd of rotech.
What do you have issues or questions with your personal
devices or maybe it's a it's a bigger organizational issue,
your church, your school, whatever it might be, your factory.
They can help you in all those IT solutions and more.
Always a good good time talking with you Trump. We
appreciate you being here with us and maybe you'll have

(11:21):
an update for us tomorrow. Hopefully we get things back
on track here, but we'll keep folks posted in the meantime.
Thank you, my friend. Always a pleasure.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Thanks Justin, have a great day you too.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
God bless

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
