Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us on the program right now. He's made a
big announcement. In fact, if you've been watching online you
may have seen it. Michael Marker, who was previously run
for government for Congress here is decided he's going to
run for state Senate and a great spot and he
says this is the place that he'd like to serve
and could be most useful District thirty one, he joins us. Now,

(00:23):
appreciate you taking a time. Good morning, Mike, how you been.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
I'm doing great jobpin thanks for having me on.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Big announcement. A lot happening in the state right now.
We just saw this is unfortunate, but here we go.
We got just got this big announcement the other day.
Michigan now ranked number forty three. That's nothing to be
proud of. And the states that are that we're in
league with are like the last in the pack when

(00:49):
it comes to some of the some of the indices
here now I don't know, I mean, this is Gretchen
Whitmer's Michigan forty third of the best states analysis lois
in the Midwest. That's nothing to be proud of.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
No, we've got obviously, we've got a lot of work
to do. And I think.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
One of the leading contributors to us ranking so low
is K through twelve education. I mean, is it two
thirds of our third graders can't read, two thirds of
our eighth graders can't do math. There's really very little
for Democrats to be proud of here.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
And you know when you start, when you start.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Ranking below Alabama in K through twelve education, I think
you have to start asking yourselves some pretty hard questions.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
That's a that's a very good point. I mean, what
what are we doing? How have we gotten off the rails?
And is really the answer found anywhere in shelling out
more money for any of this stuff? Because we've just
given out so much. What do we do to get
something as simple as education bad contract?

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Well, no, I don't think it's just add more money.
I mean under Whitmer and Democrats, our budget here has
grown by almost forty percent over the last eight years.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
And so I think most people.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Can say, hey, wait a minute, we're spending forty percent
more now as a state, what do we have to
show for it? I mean we've got awful roads. I
actually don't think that's really the problem of why Michigan
ranks so low, but we've got awful case through twelve education,
we've got an awful environment for businesses. I frankly have
been listening to the same case.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
That you were just talking Mart.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
I think we've got an awful environment for our police officers,
you know, And we get fewer badges on the fewer
badges on the roads, which equals more.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Bad guys on the road.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
And so if you don't have stafe communities, and you
don't have good education, and you don't have jobs, what
else do you have you to hang your head on?

Speaker 1 (02:32):
It really is. So we talked about the problems, and
by the way, these are just some of the beginning.
But let me throw this in there for you too,
and we're going to talk about solutions here in a moment.
Michael Markey's here with us right now, just announcing these
running for State Senate District thirty one as a Republican.
So another one of these issues is we're watching right
now President Trump trying to bring manufacturing and being successful

(02:53):
with investment and manufacturing back to the country. A lot
of US concern though Michigan's got to miss out because
of the environment created by some of these leftist Democrat
progressive policies that just leave business you know last That's
that's that's going to be, I mean, devastating for the state.

(03:16):
How do we turn that?

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Tell you that that's That's a big reason why I'm
running for the seat.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
You know, in West Michigan, we.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
We kind of live in a bubble here. We've been
very fortunate, but the state as a whole, frankly, has
been dying for decades.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
And manufacturing can come back here.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
I mean, the US led the world in manufacturing and
it was Michigan that led the US h So President
Trump wants to bring manufacturing back, wants to make the
US a powerhouse in manufacturing, and you don't achieve that
without a strong Michigan. I mean, we've you know, let's
talk about the positives. I mean, as I've talked to
donors around the country, as I was looking at running
for the seat, they would say, well, are you sure Michigan.

(03:54):
You know, manufacturing should be in Michigan anymore?

Speaker 3 (03:56):
Igo, Absolutely it should.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
I said, Number one, We've got a wonderful rail system
in Michigan.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
We've got U an international boarder, We've.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Got Harbor's, We've got you.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Know, shipping lanes here.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
No other state has both, you know, truck rail shipping
and international right here. You know, I didn't share with
them a lot of it. It's in pretty bad shape.
But we have an opportunity, and we have natural resources
that a lot of other states don't have. So we
can certainly lead be one of those leading charges in manufacturing.

(04:30):
We've done it here before. We can do it here again.
But we've got to have a state and we've got
to have leadership that wants that. I mean, right now,
under Democrats, it seems like the only type of businesses
they want are Chinese businesses. And you know, justin you
and I were on that fight right at the beginning,
fighting against Goshen. We need American businesses, Michigan businesses. We
need to empower the small business. I mean, I think

(04:51):
people forget that GM once was a small business. Forward
was started as a small business and it grew from there.
And what you know, our legislative leaders keep trying to
lure in large businesses, but it's extremely expensive that way.
I kind of think of this back to baseball terms.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
What's the cheapest kind of way to bring up a
major leaguer?

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Well, it's to develop them in your farm system.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Craft them early, develop them, nurture them. And that's what
we got to have here. We've got to have an.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Environment that nurtures small businesses, allows the small business to
grow to a medium business, and encourages a medium business
to grow into a large business. But stop spending hundreds
of millions of dollars trying to lure in large business.
It would start growing them from the ground up organically,
and frankly, that's what I've done my whole life. I mean,
I started my first business, as most people know, when
I was fourteen years old.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
I guess I was kind of a nerd.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
I started a financial firm in nine when everyone said
it was the worst financial crisis of our lifetimes. And
hopefully we don't ever.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
Have anything like that again. But we got to grow.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Businesses from the ground up. And you know, we got
to we really have to make our educational.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
System work for everybody.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
And it's not just spending more money like you talked
about before.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Yeah, lots of lots of real solutions to look forward
to and to talk about in this race, and of
course in the future for the state, is things really
start to ratchet up. You just mentioned gosh, and there's
big hearings happening today. We'll cover those a little bit
later on. They're in Lancing, So there's a lot of
these details that have to be looked at. Of course,

(06:21):
anything else on top of your list, Mike, that we
ought to make sure that we mention.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
You know, I'm a I'm an optimistic guy, So I've
been talking about this locally with people, that let's make
Michigan number one. As a former athlete, I hate this
idea when people say, hey, let's be top five. You know,
a sports he never says let's be top five this day,
let's go win a championship. And I think we need
to have that attitude here because if we start talking
about let's be number one's let's be number one in manufacturing,

(06:49):
let's be number one in small business development, let's be number.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
One in K through twelve education, let's be number one
in growth. I mean, under a Grand Home, we lost population.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Under Whitmer, we've lost population. You need to have net
population growth that fixes so many of our problems.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Michigan should be a state everyone wants to live in.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
We just got to get you know, make it back
to that that environment where they do you have population growth,
You're gonna fix mostly you know, a lot of our problems,
but let's be number one.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
And I think that's a message a lot of people
like to hear.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
It's an optimistic message, and it's something we can accomplish.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
