Speaker 3 (01:56):
Lock themselves inside the cisteen chapel. Well, the world stares upward,
looking at that chimney, awaiting with baited breath.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
Again.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
I said this yesterday. I don't think we're going to see.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
At this right anyway. I don't think we're gonna see
any orange smoke coming out at the top of that thing.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
But you just never you never know straight your things
have happened, though, I don't.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
I just but it's serious business.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
For them and they're gonna get down to it. We'll
see black smoke, you know, means no decision, white smoke.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
We have a pope.
Speaker 3 (02:38):

they go a little more conservative or tap of centriest
trying to bring everything back together.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
We'll have it all. By the way.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
The leading candidate's kind of interesting. I don't know if
you're watching the betting sites on this. We'll try and
touch on that if we get some time little later on,
maybe in the after show out trade talks underway with
China in Switzerland this weekend. They're doing what they call
ice breaker trade talks. You don't heard the stories about
factory shut down, cargo ships that are empty, people demanding answers.
(03:13):
We talked about a few of those things yesterday in
the after Show, and China begins to show the cracks.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
The paper tiger is crumbling.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
We'll have the latest on this and updates that could
send the markets through the roof. Here Jerry on day
two of deliberation here at the trial of former GRPD
officer Christopher sure The judge told yesterday about the jury
that they were deadlocked. Of course, Christina MEM's a judging
(03:47):
the case, instructing them to continue to deliberate. From everything
that I've heard, this could go round and round and
round and break some of this stuff down. It may
take a while to get a verdict on and uh well,
let me just say it may take a while to
get some agreement on this. And we'll break that down
for you here just a little bit stand by, folks,
(04:10):
if you'd like to join the program at any time,
we'd love to have you via the iHeartRadio up where
you can just hit that microphone button and easily sound off,
let it rip, let it fly. That's the talk back feature,
or the old fashioned way.
Speaker 5 (04:29):
Here are your headline.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
You could get to us on the phone.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Call Justin now at six one six seven seven four
twenty four twenty four. That's six one six seven seven
four twenty four to twenty four West Michigan Live with
Justin Barclay on News Radio Wood thirteen hundred and one
oh six nine a f m.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
All right, So we were just talking about this kind
of behind the scenes in the studio here and just
just a very simple way to break it.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Down for you. I don't see I don't see a jury.
I don't.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
I really don't see a jury convicting on second degree
murder here they threw it. I think this is evidence
mostly by the case. And this is what I believe
I told you yesterday. But this is what I believe
Prosecutor Chris Becker threw in the manslaughter. Now, I all
of this, I believe they never should have brought the charges.
(05:22):
All of that to say, they probably just should have
never brought the charges. Now, it was a different time
when they brought the charge. You have to remember that too.
They're trying to keep the city from burning is but
that should have never been in the consideration.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
I'm just gonna tell you that.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
They may tell you. He may say that this is
not that has no no, no factor into any of
what we discussed at all. That may have had no
factor at all. However, I think there is there's some
there's some thought that that had a great deal to
do with that, And you know that. The only time
(05:59):
will tell point is, I don't think they're gonna get
the second degree murder. I don't think they're gonna get that.
It's likely they may get that hung jury. Now this
judge may send them back and back and back and
I don't know how long it takes them before they
finally crack and say, look, we just we just can't
(06:22):
do this. Sean says, I don't see how a jury
could be deadlocked in the chat this oneted, Well, uh,
look at our society right now. Everybody's split in a
lot of ways. I think there are people adamant on
that jury that he's guilty, and I think there are
people adamant on that jury that and they're not equally
not going to cave on this, that he's not guilty
(06:44):
and that he was acting in self defense. You know,
I've seen this play out in the social media all
the time. I'm looking at the chat and the comments
that come through, and I go, well, I.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
See the video.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
You can see the video obviously, and you know two
people can watch that same video and get like equally opposite.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Ideas about what happened that day. So there you have it.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Or you could have a full jury who says, look
all the nearly full jury says, look, he's he's not guilty,
and get one person that says, I'm not cavan he's guilty.
You just never know what the makeup is going to be.
We don't know, and we won't until the end of all.
This likelihood I would say is you'll get a hung
jury or or you may get some you know, you
(07:30):
may get some sort of split in the baby with
the manslaughter charge, although I don't think that that's likely
to happen.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Folks. Those are just those are just a doubt.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
They did, they did, They did file yesterday what attorney
Matthew Borgila, I believe his name is, it filed the
mistrial judge rejected that, and so that's that's where we stand.
And again I'm gonna say, because we don't know, but
it could come. That verdict could come at any moment,
(08:00):
and so we will make sure that we keep you
up the speed on all of it if and when
it does. Joining us on the program right now, he's
made a big announcement. In fact, if you've been watching
online you may have seen it. Michael Marker, who was
previously run for government for Congress here, is decided he's
(08:23):
going to run for state Senate and a great spot
and he says this is the place that he'd like
to serve and could be most useful District thirty one.
He joins us, now appreciate you taking a time. Good morning, Mike,
how you been.
Speaker 6 (08:37):
I'm doing great jobpin thanks for having me.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
On big announcement. A lot happening in the state right now.
We just saw. This is unfortunate, but here we go.
We got just got this big announcement the other day.
Michigan now ranked number forty three. That's nothing to be
proud of. And the states that are that we're in
league with are like the last in the pack when
(09:00):
it comes to some of the some of the industries here.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Now I don't know.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
I mean, this is Gretchen Whitmer's Michigan forty third of
the best states analysis, lowest in the Midwest.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
That's nothing to be proud of.
Speaker 6 (09:15):
No, we've got obviously, we've got a lot of work
to do.
Speaker 4 (09:18):
And I think.
Speaker 6 (09:19):
One of the leading contributors to us ranking so low
is K through twelve education. I mean, what is it
two thirds of our third graders can't read, two thirds
of our eighth graders can't do math. There's really very
little for Democrats to be proud of here. And you know,
when you start, when you start ranking below Alabama in
K through twelve education, I think you have to start
asking yourselves some pretty hard questions.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
That's that's a very good point. I mean, what are
we doing? How have we gotten off the rails? And
is really the answer found anywhere in shelling out more
money for any of this stuff? Because we've just given
out so much, What do we do to get something
as simple as education back contract?
Speaker 6 (09:58):
Well, no, I don't think it's just more money. I
mean under Whitmer and Democrats, our budget here has grown
by almost forty percent over the last eight years. And
so I think most people can say, hey, wait a minute,
we're spending forty percent more now as a state, what
do we have to show for it? I mean, we've
got awful roads. I actually don't think that's really the
problem of why Michigan ranks so low. But we've got
(10:19):
awful case through twelve education, we've got an awful environment
for businesses. I frankly have been listening to the same
case that you were just talking about, and I think
we've got an awful environment for our police officers, you know,
and we get fewer badges on the fewer badges on
the roads, which equals more.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
Bad guys on the road.
Speaker 6 (10:36):
And so if you don't have stafe communities and you
don't have good education and you don't have jobs. What
else do you have you to hang.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
Your head on?
Speaker 7 (10:43):
It really is.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
So we talked about the problems, and by the way,
these are just some of the beginning. But let me
throw this in there for you too, and we're going
to talk about solutions here in a moment. Michael Marky's
here with us right now, just announcing these running for
State Senate District thirty one as a Republican. So another
one of these issues is we're watching right now President
Trump trying to bring manufacturing and being successful with investment
(11:06):
and manufacturing back to the country. A lot of us
concerned though, that Michigan's going to miss out because of
the environment created by some of these leftist Democrat progressive
policies that just leave business you know. Last that's that's
that's gonna be, I mean, devastating for the state.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
How do we turn out?
Speaker 6 (11:28):
I tell you that's that's that's a big reason why
I'm running for the seat. You know, in West Michigan,
we we kind of live in a bubble here. We've
been very fortunate, but the state as a whole, frankly,
has been dying for decades. And manufacturing can come back here.
I mean, the US led the world in manufacturing, and
it was Michigan that led the US. Uh So, President
(11:48):
Trump wants to bring manufacturing back, wants to make the
US a powerhouse in manufacturing, and you don't achieve that
without a strong Michigan. I mean, we've you know, let's
talk about the positives. I mean, as I've talked to
donors around the county, as I was looking at running
for the siege, they would say, well, are you sure Michigan.
You know, manufacturing should be in Michigan anymore. I go, absolutely,
(12:08):
it should.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
I said.
Speaker 6 (12:09):
Number one, We've got a wonderful rail system in Michigan.
We've got uh an international boarder, We've got Harbor's, We've
got you know, shipping lanes here. No other state has
both you know, truck rail shipping and international right here.
You know, I didn't share with them. A lot of
it's in pretty bad shape. But we have an opportunity,
(12:33):
and we have natural resources that a lot of other
states don't have. So we can certainly lead be one
of those leading charges in manufacturing. We've done it here before.
We can do it here again.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
But we've got to have a state, and we've got
to have leadership.
Speaker 6 (12:45):
That wants that. I mean, right now, on a Democrats,
it seems like the only type of businesses they want
are Chinese businesses. And you know, justin you and I
were on that fight right at the beginning, fighting against Goshen.
We need American businesses, Michigan businesses. Is we need to
empower the small business. I mean, I think people forget
that GM once was a small business. Forward was started
(13:07):
as a small business and it grew from there. And
what you know, our legislative leaders keep trying to lure
in large businesses, but it's extremely expensive that way. I
kind of think of this back to baseball terms. What's
the cheapest kind of way to bring up a major leaguer, Well,
it's to develop them in your farm system, draft them early,
develop them, nurture them.
Speaker 4 (13:28):
And that's what we got to have here. We got
to have an.
Speaker 6 (13:30):
Environment that nurtures small businesses, allows the small business to
grow to a medium business, and encourages a medium business
to grow into a large business. But stop spending hundreds
of millions of dollars trying.
Speaker 4 (13:40):
To lure in large.
Speaker 6 (13:41):
Business and it would start growing them from the ground
up organically, and frankly, that's what I've done my whole life.
I mean, I started my first business, as most people know,
when I was fourteen years old.
Speaker 4 (13:50):
I guess that was kind of a nerd.
Speaker 6 (13:52):
I started a financial firm in nine when everyone said
it was the worst financial crisis of our lifetimes. And
hopefully we don't ever have anything like that again. But
we got to grow businesses from the ground up, and
you know, we got to uh, we really have to
make our educational system.
Speaker 4 (14:07):
Work for everybody.
Speaker 6 (14:08):
And it's not just spending more money like you talked
about before.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
Yeah, lots of lots of real solutions to look forward
to and to talk about in in this race and
of course in the future for the state. Is things
really start to ratchet up? You just mentioned gosh, and
there's big hearings happening today. We'll cover those a little
bit later on. Uh they're in Lancing. Uh So there's
a lot of these details that have to be looked at,
(14:31):
of course. Uh, anything else on top of your list,
Mike that we ought to make sure that we mentioned.
Speaker 6 (14:38):
You know, I'm a I'm an optimistic guy, So I've
been talking about this locally with people that let's make
Michigan number one. As a former athlete, I hate this
idea when people say, hey, let's be top five. You know,
a sports team never says let's be top five.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
They say let's go within a championship.
Speaker 6 (14:54):
And I think we need to have that attitude here
because if we start talking about let's be number one,
that's what's being one in manufacturing. Let's be number one
in small business development. It's been number one in K
through twelve educational, it's be number one in growth. I
mean under a grand Home, we've lost population. Under Whitmer,
we've lost population. You need to have net population growth
that fixes so many of our problems. Michigan should be
(15:15):
a state everyone wants to live in. We just got
to get, you know, make it back to that that
environment where they do you have population growth, you're gonna
fix mostly, you know, a lot of our problems. But
let's be number one.
Speaker 7 (15:26):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (15:26):
And I think that's a message a lot of people
like to hear. It's an optimistic message, and it's something
we can accomplish.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
Michael Markie running for Stage Senate District thirty one. Where

little bit later on today you're going to get the
scoop on this in Lansing, holding.

It's West Michigan Live with Justin Barklay on News Radio
Wood thirteen hundred and one oh six nine a f m.
Speaker 5 (16:58):
Here are your headlines on the Midwesterner this Wednesday, May seventh.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
I'm Robin Poffman.
Speaker 5 (17:04):
It's a Midwesterner dot News original story as she looks
to hire office Scretchen Whitmer's record here in Michigan looking
worse and worse. New data shows Michigan dropping down to
forty third in an analysis of the best states, the
lowest in the Midwest. Michigan the only Midwest state ranked
in the bottom ten, with education placing it forty fifth
(17:26):
in the nation. The survey from US News and World Report.
In other news, it's another Midwesterner dot News original. A
new audit reveals Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson's office is
ignoring constituents in federal law and is failing to prevent
cheating on driver's tests here in Michigan. Meanwhile, Benson gearing
up to oversee her own election for governor in twenty
(17:48):
twenty six, and in Rome at Saint Peter's Basilica, a
service prior to a new pope being selected after Pope
Francis passes away. For these stories and more, visit the
Midwesterner at the Midwesterner dot news.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
He's something never before seen.
Speaker 3 (18:05):
I just got a text message from Mike Farrager reminded
me last night. Of course, the election yesterday. I've gone
of the results coming in from those melogies. People voting
down tax increases.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
What a story.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
We'll share it with you next right here on Wesminski Live.
Back then, we're on Verdict watch here today. I could
get one at any moment. They're on day three, the
jurors and the officer Christopher for sure, Trill just steps
from where we are downtown Grand Rapids. Beautiful day to day,
the sunshine. We're also on Pope watch. We could get
a new pope today too. We just looked at the
video here the Sistine Chapel and the chimney coming out.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
No smoke yet, but we'll keep you up to date
on that as well.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
In the meantime, back here in Michigan, Hey, we had
a big report. Mike Farrager just told us last night.
He said, I've never seen this. Boy, never thought in
a million years we would see this. He said, uh,
what was it? He said, they were actually voting down
tax increases. What a great sign.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
We won.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
In Allendell fifty nine percent voted no. And some of
these millagies. Last night he said, I didn't see this coming.
I thought we would lose by a little amount. But
what a big win. Nearly one thousand more votes. So
that's that's fantastic. Let's welcome in Senator Eric Nasba, who's
running for governor here in Michigan, and of course, Senator
(19:25):
lots of big news since we've had you on. We'll
talk about some of that. Todavid, welcome in. We appreciate
you taking the time to be here with us today.
Speaker 4 (19:31):
Hey, justin.
Speaker 8 (19:32):
Thanks so much for having me on and thanks for
keeping your listeners updated with all the important news. A
lot of news going on, and you helped digest it
and share it with folks out there so that they're
better informed citizens.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
I we'll start with the first piece of the story
of the day that just came out. In fact, Witnmer's
Michigan dropping the forty third in best states. We just
had a conversation about this in a previous segment, but
it's something that should really be concerning for all of them.
Speaker 4 (20:02):
Yeah, I think it's forty fourth.
Speaker 8 (20:03):
Actually was it forty third, But either way, bottom ten state.
Speaker 4 (20:06):
That's not where we want to be.
Speaker 8 (20:08):
This is something where we used to be a rich state.
Now we're a poor state. Our infrastructure is broken, our
education system's broken, our economic development growth broken. I mean,
over the last six years, this governor's went ahead with
what was an economic garden, finally starting to work to
get businesses going again. In the second decade of this
at the century, we actually started growing the population again.
(20:31):
But we've seen over the last few years this governor
spent nearly five million dollars in corporate welfare. That hasn't
improved our economic climate. That's given away some money to
some of the biggest world corporations.
Speaker 4 (20:42):
In the world.
Speaker 8 (20:43):
To the only state in the nation increased the state's
income tax last year, and that was because of Governor
Whitman and the Democrats. It passed the Green New Scam
a year and a half ago, which will industrialize three
hundred thousand acres of farm and forest land and make
energy more expensive and less reliable, and they repeal right
to work. And then as you look at it, they've
(21:04):
printted away a nine billion dollars surplus two years ago
without fixing the roads, without investing in our people in
lowering costs. I think what we see here is a
state that is at a fork in the road that
over the next thirty years, if we do nothing, if
we just keep the status quo in Michigan and let
it go, we're going to lose up to seven hundred
(21:25):
thousand net people in the state, and we're going to
be a poorer state, a dumber.
Speaker 4 (21:29):
State, a state with less opportunity.
Speaker 8 (21:31):
For our children and grandchildren. And that is wrong. And
that's why I'm running for governor.
Speaker 3 (21:34):
Senator Eric nasmitd with us right now, let's talk shift
gears if we can. We're starting with well, you see
the good, the bad, and the ugly. That's the ugly, right,
but there there is good news. There are solutions. In fact,
we saw you part of a big one just the
other day, President Trump in town, and of course the
big announcement that Selfadge Air National Guard Base got to
(21:55):
get those f fifteen. This big story here, and you
all work very hard behind the scenes to make it happen.
Speaker 8 (22:01):
Yeah, I mean President Trump coming into southwardge do the announcement.
It's good for Michigan, good for McComb, good for our
national security. It was a real honor to welcome President
Trump to Michigan. And then when he got down from
the stairs, he asked us, you guys want to go
for a ride, And that'll be a memory I'll tell
my grand kids someday, riding in the beast from Air
(22:22):
Force One over to the hangar to do that announcement.
But when President Trump made that announcement, you could tell
in the National Guardsman's eyes that they were excited. They
knew they had a new mission, that they knew they
were going to be able to stay in Michigan, and
that they knew that this mission was going to be
important for a national security. But it's not just that
in terms of what President Trump's been doing. You look
(22:44):
at line five, what would have been you know, it's
one hundred five hundred million dollars initial investment would have happened.
Now it's probably going to be close to a billion
dollars it's finally fast tracking the permitting process to get
that dead underway billion dollar energy investment here here in
the state, up in northern Michigan. It's better for the environment,
(23:05):
it's better for our energy security and all all of
our ural residents that around propaane, like myself.
Speaker 4 (23:11):
It's about four hundred thousand families that are on pro paane.
We'll have a more secure energy future.
Speaker 8 (23:17):
And you just keep picking down the list of how
you know, President Trump's pushing for extension of the tax
cuts to allow the economy to grow and try. Abundance
of energy is going to be so important if we're
going to compete and win in the twenty first century.
And you look at it, illegal border crossings are down,
what ninety nine point nine percent?
Speaker 3 (23:37):
It's incredible, absolutely incredible, Sinner, I got to ask you
one of the things is someone who is that you
know obviously farming is near and dear to you. One
of the big stories here in Michigan continues to come up,
as you called the green new scam. I see, we
continue to funnel all kinds of money into what I
(24:00):
call wind, solar and unicorn farts. And this is a
it's it's a boon doggle. But it's a boon doggle
that even Greta is not happy. Man, uh we we
but we see this now. They want to they want
to put all these you know, windmills, or they want
to put they want to put the solar and and
(24:20):
and put it on all kinds of lands. Well, there's
two things that people are really upset about that. And
then also you know foreign countries come in. China is
one of them that wants to come in and buy
up farmland all throughout the country into Michigan.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
I know both of those are are very h near
and dear top of mind for you as well.
Speaker 8 (24:39):
Yeah, and this is something where a year and a
half ago, legislative Democrats passed the Partisan Energy Buil up.
One Democrat was brave enough not to vote for it
wouldn't have gone through. And you've built up with with
the Inflation Explosion Act that Biden. The Democrats passed the
federal level hundreds of billions of dollars going into this
the subsidize this stuff, all making these coastal elite liberal
(25:02):
billionaires even wealthier. And then the Democrats in Michigan, along
with Governor Whimer passed what I turned the green newscab
and saying that we're going to take away those of
control and we're going to industrialize three hundred thousand acres
of farm and forest land around the state. How is
that environmentally friendly? Importing a bunch of Chinese solar panels
(25:26):
that are built under some slaver labor and horrible environmental conditions,
and then chopping down trees and taking over some of
our most pristine farmland. It's going to create a real
challenge with our way of life here in Michigan, a
rural way of life. And believe me, people are pissed
off about this.
Speaker 4 (25:48):
And I think we.
Speaker 8 (25:48):
Could run this next year into a successful election issue
to win back the governor's race, the Senate and keep
the House.
Speaker 3 (25:57):
One of the things I want to ask you about,
because this is top of mind as well. And I
know we don't have a lot of time here, but
you know, we're getting getting down to the wire on
some of this. But let me let me ask you.
You know, the roads continue to be an issue, and
I just talked with our previous guest about this, and
this is something that is concerning a lot us. We
just talked about President Trump. Uh, and the kind of
(26:19):
massive action that's taking place. We're seeing things already. We're
seeing manufacturing.
Speaker 7 (26:24):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (26:24):
You know, some of the Big three have made some
big announcements some auto, other auto as well, and high
tech things coming investment into the country. How do we
make sure because as it's set up right now, lots
of folks concerned that Michigan's going to miss out on
all of this. We've seen some plants go Indiana, Louisiana,
et cetera. But how do we make sure that Michigan
is set up and ready for business. We actually fix
(26:48):
the roads, we don't have to spend any extra money
to do it, and we make it Michigan. I guess
great to make things again in.
Speaker 4 (26:56):
It's just back to basics.
Speaker 8 (26:58):
We got to have a good tax environment, education environment,
good permitting environment, regulatory environment.
Speaker 4 (27:04):
Lower energy costs, bundant and.
Speaker 8 (27:06):
Energy and we got to compete and win in the
twenty first century. And unfortunately, over the last few years,
what we've seen is that we want the other way
with a bunch of left winging progressive proposals that makes
it harder to do business here. Capital files, the path
of lease resistance and Governor Whitmer and this Democrat legislature
the last two years kept on putting up resistors. They
(27:27):
took a round up to the economic garden, killed off
a lot of our local businesses, and now they're trying
to pay billions of dollars.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
To these transplants. It's not going to work the end
of the day.
Speaker 8 (27:37):
If we get back to basics, concentrate on fixing our
roads without attacks. Increase, concentrate on making sure that these
bureaucrats are issuing permits, lower in our tax rate, having
a competitive labor and permitting rules.
Speaker 4 (27:54):
That businesses can file.
Speaker 8 (27:55):
We can grow and prosper here in the state. But
the way, the direction that the governor's going, it's it's
going to be. It's it's a wrong headed direction.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
Senator Eric Nasmid, whether us running for governor.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
Of course, if folks want to find out more, they
reach out, maybe have a conversation with you on all
these things.
