Speaker 1 (00:00):
So right before we went to break, I mentioned Gabe Davis,
who spent several years with the Buffalo Bills, a productive
wide receiver for them. He had free agency last year
signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Actually got a pretty good
contract from Jacksonville. Three years, thirty nine million, including an
eleven million dollars signing bonus twenty four million guaranteed at signing.
(00:20):
He was released today by Jacksonville. What does that say, Well,
he had a meniscus injury. He played in I think
ten games last year. I mean, certainly down numbers. But
there's a down year across the board for Jacksonville, right.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Yeah, But that also just tells you that they were
expecting a different player than what they got. You don't
just you don't just cut ties, you have guaranteed money
like that just because you know, he had one bad season.
It's more of because he came there and he was
not the necessary the player that they thought he thought
he was.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
And you know that happens.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Sometimes we have guys and receivers that come from you know,
like the Mahomes. You know I played with Mahomes that
played with Josh. Sometimes these quarterbacks can make these receivers
look a lot better than what they are. But I
liked Gay Davis. I thought he was a hell of
a player when he was a Buffalo. Obviously, Jacksonville struggled
last year. They at everything, and so can you really
(01:16):
blame him for, you know, for having a down here,
you know, because like you said, the whole team had
it down here. So you know, injuries happened, and obviously
you hope he's healthy. And I just I just said,
you brought up the broncos. I just wonder where he's
gonna go.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
I think also it may be that Jacksonville looked at
the money and the production and said, you know what,
we're gonna go young. We're going to be young at
a lot of spots on offense. And I do think
what Shelby said is true. You know, you can be
what I call a systems player. You can just really
fit in well and you make plays when the ball
(01:53):
comes to you, which gave Davis did. But he played
with Josh Allen right and he wasn't the number one receiver,
and so when he played Stefan Diggs primarily was on
the other side.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
So you know that there were there was plenty.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
Of coverage to Diggs, which a lot of time left
Gabe Davis with one on one coverage. Well, you're you're
supposed to if you're a guy, you're supposed to win
that matchup. If you get single coverage a lot in
an NFL game, you're supposed to win that matchup, if
you're a starting receiver in the league.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
But Gabe Davis, I would not.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
I think you have Gabe Davis like receivers that are
better and younger.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Even though he's not that oldly twenty six maybe.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Hilly twenty six, and he had his worst year of
his career.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
Yeah, I'm not you know what. I'm not throwing shade
at him at all because I thought, I mean, I
thought he was a good player in Buffalo. But in
terms of hey, would you go out and get Gabe
Davis here, I really wouldn't. I like Vele, I think
you're gonna like Pat right, excuse me, Pat Ran right,
Bryan excuse mccallim right, Pat Bryant Court, I think it's
(03:04):
going to be back for another year. You know you've
got So those are all kind of similar bodies to
gave Davis.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Also gave Davis don't forget those games against Kansas City
in the playoffs, and that's kind of where he made
his name at We.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
Did those big gamesdowns catches one one game and they
still lost. But I'm just we can't forget about you know,
when Buffalo just kicked it out the end zone and
then makes them waste any clock, and then Kansas City
went down and discords easily.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
I mean, all fair, all fair, But but to your point, Dave,
if you got to look at this the math, and
oftentimes it's six, maybe seven wide receivers, depending on how
your room is constructed. You listed off Cortland, Sutton uh
gets to Marvin Mins, Devon Vle, Troy Franklin, Pat Bryant,
and Trent Sherfield. They added during free agency. Who's going
(03:55):
to play some special teams. That's their six right there.
I mean, it's not say that no wide receivers should
be considered from here on out. I think that's a
silly thing to say out loud. But at the same time,
it's really got to be somebody that you said doesn't
give you something you already have.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Well has to take somebody. You got to think if
you're bringing somebody in, somebody has to be taken out
to the equation.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
And I think Ryan, you and I have talked about
it even before Shelby came on. You know, you look
at what Sean Payton has said about the room. I
mean Sean Payton, if you listen closely and do it
for a link a length of time, he'll tell you
exactly how it feels. It may not be like cut
(04:37):
and dried, black and white, but in that long winded answer.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
He'll tell you how he feels.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
And I think he's told Ronco's Country how he feels
about the wide receiver room and the running back room.
So I wouldn't look for I wouldn't look for a
veteran wide receiver. I would still not be surprised if
a vectoran running back.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Nick Chubb, And that would be my dream. I would
love for Nick Chubb to come to Denver and just
one can you put in a good word?
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Well, yeah, I got you.
Speaker 5 (05:11):
Like.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
The one thing I will say is one, I just
want him to come see what a like, what a
nice NFL city looks like.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
You know what I mean? Like I'm no, no, I'm not.
I didn't say you were telling the truth.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Killing It's just like you know, It's a sunny city
in America compared to one of the gloomiest cities in America. Like, dude,
this is like, this is what I fell in love
with and this is why I still live here.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Don't get me wrong. I like Cleveland, but I love Denver. Yeah,
you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
That's just I think it makes the transition easier when
you like the city, when you enjoy being outside, when
you enjoy being around the city. I think it makes
a transition easier when you're switching you know, when you're
switching teams.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Around you ever you ever have killed Boston? Yes? Is it?
Speaker 5 (05:58):
Man?
Speaker 3 (05:58):
You wants?
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Oh? I forgot broke. Don't think about the proges. Pros
are huge in Cleveland. You can get them in any bar.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
You guys don't do Skyland though. You don't disrespect Cleveland.
Please Skyline riding just chuck. I mean, they're all Kentucky.
That's why they don't use seasonings. It makes sense.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
I love how like you're like prop it up Denver
and to say Cleveland. You know, it's all right, but
that moment I brought skyline chill.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
That's Cincinnati, Cincinnati. Cleveland's better than Cincinnatis. All Ohio. Well, yeah,
Ohio sucks, but no, no, no where I know, We're
not going for that.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
It's all Ohio, Sam White, we go for that.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
No.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
But like Cincinnati, we all know Cincinnati is like little brother.
You know, Cincinnati's you know, like little little brother in
like up cities to Cleveland, you know what I mean.
But everyone knows actually Columbus in the city that's growing
the most out of all of them.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
Yeah, you know what I mean. But honestly, I don't
think it.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
Wins more than Cleveland. Cincinnati too recently Columbus.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
You know, you know that's good point wrong, But.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
I'm telling you this a Nick Chubb, just the way
that he runs, I think it fits this team, you know, tremendously. Now,
Sean Payton does like his running backs to be pass catchers,
so that's something Nick Chubb is is decent that too.
But I think they obviously have, you know, as guys
on the roster that can go and like McLoughlin and
all those they have other guys can go fill that in. Well,
(07:31):
I think Nick Chubb then the Denver would be a
perfect fit.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
I mean would till the next person that sees me
anybody you take on this.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Field, point them out.
Speaker 5 (07:41):
I come out of here. You don't leave Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
There's the late Sam White, so good. You don't leave
think Cleveland. Live in Cincinnati. I love it. Proud of that.
It's a real.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Hate be treating like Cleveland Cincinnati.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
All oh yeah, well is that just like like big
brother little brother stuff?
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Like what is that?
Speaker 5 (08:05):
Is that? What it is?
Speaker 3 (08:06):
I mean, I can tell you where it emanates. When R.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
Modell, who used to own he's now gone, used to
own the Browns and he inherited Paul Brown as the
head coach of the Cleveland Browns, the reason Cleveland is
named the Browns.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
And he fired Paul Brown.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
Which I mean in the pro football world was like
wait you fired who?
Speaker 3 (08:30):
Like Nick? Yeah like that. So what does Paul Brown do?
Speaker 4 (08:35):
Goes down the Cincinnati and founded the Cincinnati Bengals in
sixty eight I believe sixty eight. I think sixty eight,
and is still his family is still in the ownership.
And you don't think when Paul Brown founded the Bengals,
(08:56):
you think the rivalry between the Bengals and the Browns.
You think he wanted to win that game every single year,
two times a year.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
The team named after him.
Speaker 4 (09:04):
Oh my gosh, shamed after him?
Speaker 2 (09:13):
No, no, I'm an home township, west Side, west Side.
Yeah no, I'm just saying Shakers because I love it.
And then you know the Broncos beloved Draymond Jones from Cleveland,
Ohio's finess remember him.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
Oh yeah, it's a good player. This one.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
I wish I'll be going and get Nick Chubb bringing
a vet hope RJ is that dude, but feels like
we still need a back.
Speaker 5 (09:33):
In the room.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Would you go Nick Chubb or JK Dobbins Chub?
Speaker 2 (09:40):
I'm a love bias, but also I just believe that,
you know, the second year coming out that injury. I
think it's a low risk, very high reward.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
It would depend on what kind of risk Financially, I
think between Dobbins and Chubb, I think both those guys
can play. I think Chubb is a better player if healthy.
But at what point does the price start to come
down a bit for Nick Chubb? I would think there'll
be teams that will give Nick Chubb still, even at
(10:11):
the stage of his career. There's some pretty good coin,
probably more money than JK.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Dobbins would get.
Speaker 5 (10:19):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
I think this based off the You know, Nick Chubb
didn't necessarily have the best year because you know, obviously
he was working his way back, and so I don't
think it's necessarily even even if it is a little
bit more, I don't see it being.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
A lot more. But their skill set is different.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
Yes, but his skill set is something that I think
would actually take the Broncos to the top based off
of how he runs. It broken tackles and it taken
that pressure off of bow knicks and really, as we know,
this old Lion's best, you know, best trade is really
more run blocking than pass blocking. So if you get
a guy like Nick Chubb, a guy who can you
(10:56):
can't help but get hyped up watching his runs and
watching them run over people and watching them just break tackles,
and what is that going to do for your old line?
And then you know the Broncos weren't necessarily the best
team in four like third and one four for one
last year. Introduce to Nick Chubb, who you know, comes
squat seven hundred pounds, and I see that, I see
the problem being fixed.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
I mean, David, they do go get Nick Chubb, just hypothetically,
it would seem to probably be bad news for rodric estimate,
I guess at that point because he's more of your bruiser.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
Back at that point.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
I mean, it's not like you're gonna bring in Nick
Chubb and pay him coin to the point that you
were making there and then not start him slash having
in a heavy rotation with r. J.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Harvey. That's the fact.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
Yeah, So I think, I mean, if they did that,
then my guess would be it would be Nick Chubb
and r J Harvey, a combination of those two. I
think jilliel still would probably figure somehow, some way we
got to get this guy four or five touches a game.
How do we do it? Or down, yes, sweep, I
mean whatever. There's there's ways packages you could you could
(12:02):
put together. But I think, you know, if they went
out and got chubbed, and I don't know that they will,
but if they did, I think it would be him
and r J.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Harvey primarily. That's a pretty good combination though.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
You think about when we came into the offseason and
wanting an upgrade in the room. They have upgraded the room, right,
I mean no doubt even adding just RJ.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
Harvey. If we just sat where we are.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Today and I know you lost Davonte, I'd say, based
on what they want to do, that's an upgrade.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
I could tell yes, I think it would be an upgrade.
I I can tell you they really like RJ.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
Harvey.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
I mean they, I mean, you know, he's got a
he's got some really outstanding film if you go back
and look at Central Florida. I mean, this guy was
a quarterback at one point, right, and that he moved
running back when he when he transferred to Central Florida.
But they they love his skill set period out of
(13:00):
the backfield, getting the ball somehow, he's difficult to get
in the ground. They've got, you know, film of him
breaking a ton of tackles you don't see and I
know it's college and these will be grown men in
the NFL, but you don't see the first defender get
him on the ground.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
So the question is.
Speaker 4 (13:21):
Do they love him enough that they would forego signing
a veteran back.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
I don't. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
I don't necessarily believe so. But also growing off, you
know he brought up Javonte Williams. Javonte Williams is exactly no.
Nick Chubb is exactly who they wanted Javonte Williams to
turn into. That was the idea when you know you
were bringing a Javontay Williams and so well second runners exactly.
So my thinking behind it is, all right, this is
who you wanted, you know, Jevonte Williams to be. Why
don't you just go get the guy, Go get the guy.
(13:49):
But Arthur Harvey, though, you know, for them to offer
is extremely impressive. And like you said though that also
him being a former quarterback that just throws. It's Sean
Payton that throws a whole another mention that.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
They yes, you know, you know there's going to be
half back past this. It's going to be some type
of toss. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
Yeah, all right, head out to the KOA Common Spirit
Health Highline and bring on a voice of the Nuggets
for Altitude Television. That is the one and only Chris Marlowe. Chris,
thank you so much for the time, my friend. You're
Dave Logan, Ryan Edwards and Shelby Harris. How are you well.
Speaker 5 (14:27):
It's great to be available.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Hey, Chris, great to talk with you.
Speaker 4 (14:30):
I know, gosh, that had to be that had to
be so fun, uh, Game one of the series, and
I just want to ask you when when you look
at this matchup after what you've seen in the first game,
the EBB and flow and how the Nuggets hung in
there and they showed just unbelievable resilience. I mean, what, realistically,
what do you expect to see tonight?
Speaker 3 (14:50):
What kind of game?
Speaker 5 (14:52):
Well? I think I think game one was kind of
a slap in the face to Okay, see uh you.
They won sixty eight games, they were being lauded and glazed,
and everybody thought that they were going to either sweep
the Nuggets or win in five or maybe six. And
I just think that they came in with a sense
of kind of entitlement, and I think the Denver Nuggets
(15:15):
came in with, hey, we've won a championship before, we've
been playing well, we're coming off a tough series, but
we're in a rhythm. And I actually think the Nuggets
caught them by surprise, and I'm thinking that's going to
be a much more difficult game tonight. I think if
OKAC comes out and plays their best motivated, that they
(15:36):
should win. But I think the Nuggets have a chance.
I think they put a little bit of doubt into
the Thunder, and you know, when doubt kind of creeps
in and you start making plays or the coach starts
doing odd things that can really affect a team's chemistry.
So I'm really curious to see, particularly the first five
or ten minutes of this game, how it goes.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
Hiy, Chris Shelby here is here? How was okay?
Speaker 2 (16:01):
His body language after that? You know, tough, tough loss
and just seeing you know, obviously the fans obviously were
all heartbroken, but how was how were the players, uh
when after after the first after Aaron Gordon shot, but
also when was this all said and done?
Speaker 5 (16:20):
You know, it was interesting to watch. I think they
were just in complete shock. They should have won that game.
Nuggets were fortunate to win. You could even say they
were lucky to win. They had to have so many
things go their way. The fouling, the made free throws,
the chet, the chet homegridden miss free throws. Uh, some
(16:41):
great plays uh by by Jokic, the past by Westbrook
to set it up. You know, that could have that
could have ended in disaster. I thought that Rust was
heading into a double team, full speed, racing up the court,
but he had the smarts to get it over to Gordon.
Who makes the shot. So I think they were in shock.
(17:02):
I think the fans were sunned, and I think the
body language after the game was I think a little
bit of an act of Hey, this is no big deal.
This is one game we lost to a good team.
We'll make up for it, and we're going to get
an idea tonight when when Game two starts, if these
guys are ready to go.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
Yeah, I think that's exactly right. That the press conferences
were kind of a little bit strange.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
They did seem to sort of just pass this off
as just a one off kind of situation. Well, how
have you thought that the team has responded since the
dismissal from Michael Malone. I mean, again, you win the
three games of the regular season, you win your first
series against the Clippers. There's some out there that wondered
what this team was going to be made of the
kind of stuff they were going to be made of
(17:48):
without their head coach.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
I think it's been pretty impressive.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
Yeah, I do too. I think David Edelman sent a
terrific job. Obviously he's different than Malone. Malone was fantastic
for his time and winning it championship. But I think
sometimes just the message gets old and the players didn't
seem to be listening as close as they could. Adamman
Rings kind of a different perspective. He was the offensive
coordinator for eight years. I asked him is he going
(18:13):
to get involved with the defense, and he said, yeah,
you know, I've studied defenses for my eight years when
I'm on offense, and I think he's done a really
good job and adjusting. They played a lot more zone,
they play some matchup. I like the way they hedge
out on some of the guards instead of just switching
every time. So if you've got Christian Brown on SGA
(18:36):
and they cross and make a switch, you don't have
to switch murray on him right away. You can hedge
out keep Christian involved in the play. I just like
some of the stuff they've done. It's just different kinds
of things. His message is direct, but it's not frantic,
and I love the way the phrase he uses, Hey,
remain calm, Remain calm. This is a team that as
(19:00):
a championship pedigree. If you just remain calmon, hang in there,
good things might happen. And I think that's exactly what
happened in Game one.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
We're chopping it up with Chris Marlow.
Speaker 4 (19:09):
You see him all the time in Altitude TV Nuggets
and the thunder tonight from Oak City in Game two.
I want to ask you at one particular player in
Jamal Murray, and I think you know he's He's got
unbelievable talent. Has played at an inconsistent level at times
during the regular season. But I have seen something really
(19:34):
since the playoffs started where I've seen not all the time,
but stretches of play where I mean he's been.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
Aggressive on defense.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
He's getting into people, and I think I've seen that
really by and large from the team. I think the
defensive pressure the Nuggets have exerted in a few of
those games against the Clippers and from time to time
in Game one against Oak City is different than what
I saw during the regular season. You see him a
(20:05):
lot more than I do and cover him on a
regular basis. Do you see the same thing or not?
Speaker 5 (20:13):
Well, I think they kind of bought into what Adelman
has been preaching, you know, with the different looks the zone,
different types of ways to play defense. When I look
at Jamal Murray, I think to myself, there's no reason
why Jamal can't be an adequate defender. He's that size,
he's got tough, he's got grit, he's quick, he's not
(20:37):
the speediest guy in the league. He's smart. I think
when you assigned Jamal Murray to guard like Steph Curry
or John Morant or really good player, he's okay. He
does a pretty good job. When you assign him a
rotation play into the corner where he's not guarding anybody,
but he's supposed to come in and help out, and
(20:59):
there's three rowations and we're doing all that stuff. I
don't think that sometimes that he pays the attention that
that position needs. So I think Murray can play good defense.
I really do. He's shown that he can do it,
and many coaches in my career and your career and everybody.
(21:20):
Defense is about want to how much do you want it?
Do you want to play hard? You can you do
what the coaches are asking. And I think the new
schemes and you know, ratcheting up ten to twenty percent
on the regular season has made the Denver Nuggets into
a little bit better defensive team than they were earlier
this year.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Chris, just one of my last questions I would say
is how has Russell Westbrook's presence and this leadership really
enhanced this Nethers team in the playoffs because obviously he's
taken on a bigger role. I feel like of being
the leader. How has this having Russell Wilson helped his
team in the playoffs?
Speaker 5 (21:59):
Russell Westbrook, I thought about them a lot, because that's
a that's a really interesting question. You know. Some some
people say, well, he's just not not Westbrook, But just
if you ask about what's stay looking, well, he's a
he's a good leader. He's a vocal leader. He leads
by example. Russell Westbrook does it all. He leads by example,
(22:20):
He leads by with with his voice. He never takes
a moment off. He's turned out to be a much
better defensive player than I ever thought. I mean David
Adaman who was describing you know, he flies around like Batman,
getting involved in all kinds of plays, some good, some bad.
(22:41):
Even Russ said that the other day. He's a good pastor.
He's he's an improved shooter. He shot over forty percent
and he can just stay away from the the kind
of the what happened place? I call him what happened there?
You know, with the ball slips out of his hands
or a costly turnover here or there. I mean, he
has basically been the Nuggets a bench and I think
(23:03):
tonight we're going to see early can Michael Port go
Is he going to be effective? And if he can't,
then you're going to see a lot more minutes from Westbrook.
You'd like to see Porter out there twenty five to
thirty minutes and getting you know, ten, fifteen, twenty points.
But I think Westbrook has been, you know, a terrific
(23:26):
addition to the Nuggets. He's he's a character and still
very talented in his seventeenth year.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
That has perfectly said.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
And yeah, that answer the other night from Westbrook talking
about the Russell Westbrook experience was phenomenal.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
Just I mean, he's the work of art.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
It was.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
It was so great, Chris.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
Last one for me, really appreciate the time you mentioned
Michael Porter junior. That's kind of where I wanted to
go at this next one. We saw Obviously the fourth
quarter he did not play, played twenty four minutes total.
Peyton Watson and Julius Strather got some minutes there. Russell
Westbrook played a lot in the fourth quarter. Do you
expect to see sort of a similar approach as you're
trying to manage his minutes. And then I guess, specifically
as this series wears on and the playoffs were on,
(24:07):
how significant is that for what is a relatively short
eight man rotation.
Speaker 5 (24:15):
Well, quite frankly, we in the media, myself, god Katie,
we don't really know how badly Michael Porter has heard,
how much pain he is in, whether he's taking a
shot to play. We just know what we saw last game,
and he wasn't efficient. So I think, if I'm David Adelman,
(24:37):
I'm starting with Porter. I hope he plays well, and
then you're going to have to go to the band
and replace him. I thought, I thought Peyton Watson actually
had some good minutes. I think with more minutes he'll
play better. And I wasn't totally surprised that they utilize
Julian Strader. I know he hasn't played in a month,
But when you watch Julian Strader and you realize what
(24:59):
he did last year, what he did this year, the
improvement he made until he got hurt. Is he the
greatest defensive player in the world. No, But the Nuggets
don't have a lot of guys like that. But can
he get you twenty points and win you a game
like Christian Brown did two seasons ago against Miami when
he came up with fifteen points. Maybe he can. So
I expect if Porter can't go, you see Watson first.
(25:22):
But I think you're going to see a little Straw
that you might even see some Jalen Pickett. I think
it's all hands on deck for sure for tonight.
Speaker 1 (25:29):
Chris are the best. Really appreciate the time. Man can't
wait to watch tonight's game.
Speaker 5 (25:32):
Thank you, Let's throw baby, Let's go.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
That's exactly right. Yeah, well, yes, let's go.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
Say that's how it feels. And guys, last point about
Michael Porter Junior. It will be kind of an all
hands on deck thing, Dave. I think if for some
reason he is not able to do as much as
you're hoping.
Speaker 4 (25:52):
Yeah, and I think Chris accurately summed up Payne Watson
and Julian strawther Watson is an unbelievable athlete. Can play
good defense, can contest shots at the rim, is capable
of getting up and altering or blocking a shot.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
A cage line.
Speaker 4 (26:11):
I don't think he's a consistent perimeter shooter, but he
had a big three pointer. We talked about it the
day after Game one. Nuggets were down eight in the fourth,
he rises up from right in front of Oak City's bench.
It hits a three cuts to lead to five, and
strather ad a nice drive to the basket earlier in
the game. So I think, yeah, I think both those
(26:31):
guys you're going to see tonight, and I would say
on a limited basis, unless they're playing well, then maybe
you carve out a few more minutes and you get
some of your guys to rest.
Speaker 1 (26:41):
What ends up being the case, And we've talked about
this now for a couple of years since Peyton Watson
joined the team. You lose a little bit on offense
when he's out there. It's not to say that he
can't do those things. This is not what he's in
there for. And so if you're saying for a one
for one right Peyton Watson or Michael Porter Junior, it
sort of just depends on the situation.
Speaker 4 (26:58):
Well, it depends on it really depends on Michael Porter
Junior's health, because if he's healthy, he gives you the ability. Now, listen,
we've all seen him when he can't throw it in
the ocean, and is he going to contribute in other ways.
We've seen in stretches where he's done some good things.
He looks like he rebounds a little better, got on
the floor a couple of times, and.
Speaker 3 (27:20):
We've seen him where it's like what you're just standing there?
Speaker 4 (27:23):
What do you? What are you doing? So if he's
knocking down shots, he has to play. But with that shoulder,
the key is he's got to knock down a few
shots otherwise somebody else is going to be in the
game because he's compromised physically.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
Even shots. I think his biggest liability is his defense
and is rebounding. You know, you have a six' ten
body out there and that can't go up and rebound
because he only has one arm at the. Moment and
LIKE i said, YESTERDAY i believe that he's a he's
a very talented player and he's really he's going out
there trying to. Fight he just can't do it right.
Now and so it just depends like what do you
(27:58):
are you going to give? It you're gonna let him
play for or hopefully you get fifteen, Minutes but what
DO i think it's? Up you, know twenty points but, here
here's what it.
Speaker 5 (28:04):
Is the.
Speaker 4 (28:04):
Shots if he's knocking down, shots which we've seen him,
do he's gonna. Play and whatever he gives up on,
defense he gives up on. Defense but here's the. GUY i,
mean what did the average in the regular, season like
Seven i'm gonna say seventeen or eighteen points sounds, RIGHT
i mean something like. That he's The nuggets third leader eighteen.
(28:26):
Points so it. Is it is the. Shots it's just
a matter of if he's not knocking down, shots then
What shelby said is absolutely true because he's he's compromised,
physically and even when he's completely, healthy we've seen in
stretches where it's, like, DUDE i mean just regular sort
of anticipatory basketball moves defensively at times we don't get from.
(28:50):
Him if he's knocking down shots on a regular, basis
and we've seen that, too then you got you gotta ride.
Speaker 2 (28:57):
HIM i just you, Know i've always been a fan OF.
MPJ i like the way he. Plays he reminds me
of like old school With Shard, lewis like old school
With Charle lewis from the, past where like you, know six,
ten six, eleven good shooter has defensive, ability and it's
(29:18):
just also it just makes me wonder where would The
nuggets be if he was, healthy you, know if he
was healthy and able to, play would they be more?
Successful wouldy let me? Less BECAUSE i think if he's
off the, floor then if he's on the, FLOOR i,
mean Then Russell westbrook's off the. Floor AND i think
a lot of The nuggets success has been Because russ
is on the. Floor and so it kind of actually
(29:40):
works out, though because it helps Because Russell wilson is
getting some playing time and he's earned. It but it's
also helps Because Michael Water junior is hurt and so
it's like, like isn't are we even gonna get a
good minutes out of? Him or do you feel a
guy Like Russell westbrook and where you, know like where you,
know like he's gonna go up, There he's just gonna
he's going to create, havoc you know WHAT i. Mean
and that's the best what. Explained he's just going to
(30:01):
create havocs good.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
And bad with that chaos and havoc, though, Right and
we said that in going into the postseason that as
much as we love the addition Of, Westbrook especially coming
off the, bench you want to as much as you
can focus that. Energy and you know When David adaman took,
over he. DID i mean it's the first game he
had him playing like seventeen eighteen. Minutes we're, like that's,
(30:23):
perfect that's. Perfect but as you go further into the.
Postseason that was kind of my question To. Chris the
further you go into this, thing the more.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
That depth gets.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
Tested and, so, yeah right, now you have the experience
factor Over Oklahoma. City there's no denying that. Fact and
the fourth quarter was the perfect example of. It and
if to your Point dave about The powter, holes if
we get to the fourth, QUARTER i, get, yeah fourth
quarter again to, Night, Yeah Oklahoma city is going to
be shaking into certainly certainly. WELL a perfect example was
(30:57):
with Chet. HOLGRIND i, mean who's got that free throw?
Line he quite literally looked like he was. Shaking that
hasn't gotten.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
ENOUGH i feel Like Cheded holmgren hasn't got enough flack
for you, know yours ARE i hate to put blame
on one, person but you're supposed to be one of
their best players here in all these. Commercials you gotta
go up there to make these.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
Shots he's a seventy five percent. Shooter you gotta go
there and make these shots because you can't do is
miss bowl missed both.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
Of, them and then that's that already puts them in
a bad. Situation so and that's why everybody had to
commit To Russell westbrook going down to pay because they
were only up. One and that's what actually Left Aaron
gordon opened on the, corner so Ched. Holmgreen missing those
shots is actually what opened Up Aaron.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
Gordon there's so many things that had to go right
for that game to happen the WAY i, Thought oh,
yeah laid it out, Perfectly like we can all sit
here and say, wow what to win and acknowledge it's
a pretty lucky.
Speaker 3 (31:49):
Win you need a lot of things to break your.
Speaker 4 (31:51):
Way that's you, know we in doing a show like
this and other shows when you talk about, sports sometimes
you get caught up in all the sports cliches because there's.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
A ton of.
Speaker 4 (32:03):
Them but that, Game game one In Oak city was
exactly where the phrase they stole one came. From, yep
they stole. One Oak city should have won the. Game
but the reality of it is they couldn't close it
out and they had every. Opportunity so that's WHY i
(32:25):
think tonight is a fascinating. MATCHUP i think the thunder
come out and or uber aggressive. Early nuggets just have
to withstand the windstorm early and. Once if they, do
AND i think they, will and they stay in the,
game the longer For nugget fans', perspective the longer The
(32:45):
nuggets are in the, game they're in touch in the second,
half the tighter the old powter hole gets for the.
Thunder oh my, right you know it. Does you couldn't
drive a pin through there with a. Jackhammer, man my Wild.
Dave i'm just saying we've all seen. It where you
(33:08):
speak your, muscle you just can't mean. It you can't
you think that's
