Speaker 1 (00:00):
Dave Logan, Ryan Edwards, Rick Lewis in studio. Always one
of my favorites. What's up, Rick, what's up?

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Ryan?

Speaker 3 (00:06):
It's good to be back. It seems like we got
a little Friday thing going.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
We have a Friday thing going. I like it. Let's
keep it going. I like thank you for the weekend.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
We got all sorts of fun stuff over the next
three hours before we walk things up to the Rockies
and Padres. We're gonna have Justin's step. We talked about
him just a couple of days ago with Nick Cosmider.
He's the wide receiver coach at Illinois. He's gonna talk
to us about Pat Bryant. The rookies reported today for
mandatory mini camp, and we'll talk a little bit about
the rookies as well, some expectations going into the season.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
The Nuggets back in action.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Tonight's another late one, this one at Ball Arena. So
we'll obviously spend some time over the course of the
next few hours not only dissecting what happened Wednesday night,
but what's going to happen tonight and Sunday.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Dave, my friend, good to see you. Goodee you guys.
Hello Dave Hello, Rick, our Nuggets. You're our Nuggets insider expert.
Oh you that way? Congratulations, you have a good read
on this team. I was just telling Ryan off the air,
I do not. I got the game wrong first game,
Game one. I got it wrong Game two, and I'm
just gonna lay out.

Speaker 4 (01:11):
So you had the Nuggets losing in game one and winning.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Game I thought they would bounce back and win game two.
It didn't work out. No, it was in the first quarter.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
I remember, like Colin Cowherd, who's been like wrong, like
historically wrong, like every time he does any betting. Is that?

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Are you our local? Like, we'll just so tonight, we'll
just do the opposite of whatever you say.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
You might want to do that with when it comes
to the nugget, you might want to do that.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
So tonight you think Oklahoma say is gonna win? Yeah,
I do, I do. He's giving me the eye off.
What are we, man?

Speaker 3 (01:44):
I just what do we do? I'm gonna lay off tonight.
I'm not gonna even bet again. I mean I won't
even take the five five and a half points. I'm
not even gonna do that.

Speaker 4 (01:53):
Game two, you saw one team that was desperate, one
team that came out with tremendous force and energy and
one team that at least looked like and we got one. Yeah,
we'd like to get this one. But they sort of
played with to me at least that attitude. Now, I

(02:16):
also will say this, I thought it was not the
reason that they lost by whatever fifty or whatever, but
I thought the officiating that game allowed a lot.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Of physical play.

Speaker 4 (02:31):
So now you say, okay, oak City was better tied
at one. Denver has to come out tonight and established
like we're back home and here's how we're going to
play defensively that they we've seen them in stretches where
they have really for them, played really good defense. Oklahoma

(02:55):
City is an excellent defensive team. So Denver has to
come out in matt that physicality and energy. There's no
reason they can't. And I just thought, I mean, I
thought Jokic got mugged. I thought Jojo Murray got mugged.
You know the guy that I was most impressed with,
because there weren't many, was Russell Westbrook. He came to

(03:16):
play when when Yokich gets muggs mugged inside in the
second quarter and it's it's about forty something to six
or whatever the hell score was. I mean it was
Russell Westbrook who stepped up and said, hey, wait a minute, man,
So you got to get some of whatever he's got
and inject it into everybody else who come out tonight

(03:39):
and go after a really good team and try to
hold home court.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yeah, they need more, like you said, they need more
of whatever Russell Westbrook brings to the court. And uh,
certainly Joker brings it every game, but Russell Westbrook, he's
been a guy that can really change the energy for
them and I've been really impressed with him.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
What's the thirty six seven? Thirty seven? Yeah, I mean
it's that's pretty amazing.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
And they did mug Joker in that last game and
they kind of flustered him and uh, this really tied
him up. And if they do that again tonight, you
know they know. Teams know if you can do that
to Joker, you got your best chance to win. You
take him out of the game. Can Jamal Murray beat you?
You know, can Ag beat you? That's the question, and

(04:28):
I'm not sure if they're up to that task.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
It's gonna be interesting to watch, I thought as I
was watching that game Wednesday.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Night, gloating a bit? Were you no? No, no, no, no,
hold on, hold on? Did I question? Listen? Just quiet?
I was a Q? Was it more of a statement
gloating a bit? Were you question? Mark? It's a question?
Your voice to kind of go up there.

Speaker 4 (04:48):
That's like a you know, a twenty one year old
asking a question. They in and every into the sentence
is like this speak to a manager.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
You know what I mean? Yeah, No, I know exactly
what you mean. No, I was uploading.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
I was not gloading. I'm rooting for the nuggets. Of
course it wouldn't be gloating on that, but it was right.
So you know, whatever you want to say, militar, what.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
I would say to that with with respect to that
due respect. It's the blind squirrel theory, right, blind squirrels.
I mean they find acorns every now and then, too.
They'll gloat over running your head into the acorn when
you didn't even see it.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Don't don't cload up.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
But it's a little bit better than that, Dave. I've
been saying this team is this good all season long?

Speaker 4 (05:33):
Well, I mean that that would be who wouldn't say
that about a team that had the best record in
the League. Somebody in this room said they were soft,
and the other person's.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
Side, I stand by that. I stand by.

Speaker 4 (05:47):
That part of what you saw. They didn't play soft,
The Nuggets played soft. What what part did you think
they were soft down the stretch in Game one?

Speaker 1 (05:55):
Uh? No, I thought they got I thought they're coaching
thrilled them, thought coaching.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Please the hell out of here.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
You're gonna blame You're gonna blame Mark Dagnall for how
they played down the stretch.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Yes, they win that game. Nine times out of ten.
They win that game. If Mark Dagnall does not decide to.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
Do or maybe well the end of the game, I
think you can question his tactics for sure. The last
six minutes of the game, where you got four guys
standing around and basically with their body language, it looked
like they're saying, please, don't throw it to me, and
SGA was the guy that had to do it. That's
not Mark Dagnall. That's a little bit of softness. So

(06:35):
we'll see tonight. We'll see your team's favored, your team,
your team's favorite. So it would be an upsets one.
My team won, but I'm sticking with my team. He's
having so much fun.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
All Right, man, we'll see what happens.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
You're you're putting me in a very bad situation here,
by the way, No, you put yourself in that situation.
I'm sure that. I'm simple.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
I'm simply here to ensure that since you put yourself
in that, I'm making sure you acknowledge that and you
stay there.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
It feels like one of those like did you see
the movie Step Brothers I have so where he's like
he's like burying him and he's like, I'm so alive.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
He's like, you're not right.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
He's like, I'm like, no, no, no, David, I'm still another fan.
You're like, no, you're not, No, you're not. Here's the dirt. Yeah,
So we will see.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
I expect.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
I mean, I'm not really going out on much of
a limb. It will be much more competitive tonight, obviously.

Speaker 4 (07:29):
God, I hope so, but God, can't get anything? Eighty
seven points in the first half, yes, because it was
a record?

Speaker 2 (07:35):
Could you not?

Speaker 4 (07:36):
Could you just not show up at all? Nothing was contested.
The Nuggets played with no force. I mean they played
like a team that was very satisfied to get the split.
All right, Now, what you have to do is you've
got to change sort of your mental outlook, and I
think they will. I think you'll see him come out
and it'll it'll be much much more aggressive from the

(07:59):
Nuggets on defense. Listen, I mean all kidding aside, Oklahoma
City is a great team, but I still think the
Nuggets have a power puncher's chance in this series. I
think Tonight's game is going to be the key. The
Nuggets can win tonight, and I think they can. Then
the worst you go back to Oak City in Game

(08:21):
five is two to two. That's the worst. So I
mean they've got to put everything they have in tonight's game.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
I feel like the series pivots tonight.

Speaker 4 (08:32):
Well that's what the hell I just said, whoever wins
the game, And you said the Nuggets are going to win,
I said, if the Nuggets win tonight, win they go
back to oak City.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
This go worse than two too.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
Yeah, And if Oklahoma City wins tonight, then what do
you think you better make sure you get Game four?

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Okay, right?

Speaker 4 (08:49):
I mean you you better because you don't want to
go back down three to one, and the.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
Nuggets couldn't play any worse. And the thunder couldn't play
any better. So factor that in with a home court
advantage in a very motivated I hope Nuggets team.

Speaker 4 (09:05):
Three games officiated tonight. Yeah, like I'd love to know.
Do you know who the officials are?

Speaker 2 (09:10):
It's not Scott Foster? Good? Thank God good.

Speaker 4 (09:13):
I mean, you know, I don't know Scott Foster. He
may be, he may be the best official ever. I
don't know. But I've watched the NBA for years and
too often I get the opinion that Scott Foster wants
the game to be about Scott Foster.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
That's all I mean. I just like, dude, can we could.

Speaker 4 (09:36):
You not be the center of attention seemingly in every
game I watch that he works.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
James Capers is the crew chief, Okay, Jim Caper's been
around for a long time.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Ben Taylor, ray A Costa, and Eric Dalen. So that's
that's our group tonight. But you listen, I know we're
starting out to sap the son, right, I mean his
dad also?

Speaker 4 (09:58):
Yeah, right, Jim Capers, I believe I believe his dad
was an NBA official for a long long time.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
That was my one. The physicality is one thing, right,
I mean, it's the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
If you're gonna keep doing it until they stop it, right,
if you're the Oklamis City Thunder, you're gonna keep fouling
your Joker. If they're not gonna call it, then that's
not your fault. But Scott Foster just seemed like he
wanted He was the first game back, and he's come
off of an injury and his first game back in
a couple of months, and he was just enjoying the
camera time. It just seemed like he was soaking that

(10:30):
up every chance he got to be the center of
the whole thing.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
And listen, I mean that is sort of what it is.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
You as the Nuggets have to adjust because the refs
are in a lot of ways a subjective thing, right,
because every crew has a bit of a different way
they call the game, and you have to adjust. You
have to be aware of that, and so I think
people get frustrated by that. We knew Scott Foster was
going to be the guy. We've seen how he's called
games in the past, so I guess that part didn't

(10:59):
surprise me all that much based on what we saw
Wednesday night.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
Do you still think Joker is the best player in
the league? Yeah, you still think so Okay, Yeah, I'm
just wondering, well, why you don't, Well, you know, really,
he's certainly in the discussion. I think SGA he's a great,
he's a great he does everything. He's a great player
on the Joker, but does he play defense like STA?

Speaker 4 (11:25):
I think I think of I would say, with respect,
I think Oklahoma City as a team is really good
on defense. I don't know that Shay Gigus Alexander is
a great one on one defender. I mean, you know,
my favorite is really good. What they do is they work,

(11:45):
They work at it. They really work at it. They
move their feet to stay in front of it. But
I don't know that SGA would be considered ever to
be an All NBA defensive team member. Well, he's a great,
often not the best defensive player in the league, but
he's certainly a good defensive player. I think I think

(12:06):
Joker is a you know what, Joker has great anticipation
of passing lanes. I mean, he didn't play well in
Game two, but none of them, none of them did.
I mean Christian Brown. That's one of the few games
I've seen the first half where I'm watching this like
Christian Brown's kind of standing a brutal game. We're just
kind of standing around as these guys. I mean, it

(12:28):
got to the point when I'm thinking, Okay, I hope
Oak City wins by eighty because if this team is
really as competitive as I hope they are and think
they are, it is going to stick in their craw
when they come out tonight in front of a home audience,
right absolute, I mean, let's see, let's see, let's see

(12:49):
if it does.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
Forty three might might as well have been eighty because
that game wasn't really any kind of contention, no, at
any point.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
So did you watch the whole thing? Yes? Yeah, I
thinks to be paid checked out a bit in the
fourth quarter, I'll be honest. Well it's okay.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
Then Nuggets checked out about midway they did through the
second done by halftime, Yeah, I mean you give up
eight STI thinking about that, as you said, Rick, a
NBA record.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Eighty seven points and a half.

Speaker 4 (13:17):
I thought I was watching a Paul West head team.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
Right, And you know, I don't remember, and I haven't
watched as much NBA as you. I don't remember a
team getting blown out like that in Round.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
Two of the playoff.

Speaker 4 (13:30):
Well, nobody's ever scored eighty seven points and a half. True,
but just overall one they lose by forty.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
Four halftime eighty seven to It was eighty seven to
fifty six.

Speaker 4 (13:44):
I mean, man, I don't know if there's ever been
a bigger blowout. I said no, I mean, they didn't
play any defense.

Speaker 1 (13:50):
By comparison, the Knicks won ninety one to ninety in
the earlier game. So right, so the Thunder almost scored
as many points. Yeah, wow as the Knicks or Celtics.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
It was crazy. You think.

Speaker 4 (14:04):
In terms of panic, who has the most panic right now?
Out of the Boston Celtics or the Cleveland Cavaliers. You
have the number one seed and the number two seed
in the Eastern Conference that both are zero and to
and both of those two losses came at home.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
I'd say Cleveland because they're banged up as well. Yeah,
so Boston I feel like they could. They could win
on a way court. That's not really a big deal
to them. We were talking about a front or on Wednesday.
We said, hey, Boston's gonna be probably fine if.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
That meltdown in Game two.

Speaker 4 (14:42):
I thought I sort of understood Game one, Yes, but
then you go up in Game two, which is essentially
a must win, you go up by twenty and then
in the fourth quarter, I thought they tightened up. I mean,
they reminded me a little bit of Oak City in
the last six minutes of Game one. I mean no,
I mean they missed thirteen straight shots. That's in an

(15:04):
NBA game with elite players, That's almost impossible to do.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
Yeah, I got I'll score thirty to seventeen at home
in the fourth quarter. But to your point, right, it
was it just was a meltdown, right, a mental a
mental meltdown. But I think from Cleveland, do you agree
with that? Do you think Cleveland or or I think
it depends. Well, I think both of them are panicked.
I think the Cleveland thing depends on who, as you said,

(15:31):
who's who's going to play and are they getting some
of their some of the guys back. And I haven't
seen the report on that yet, I think, I mean,
I think both Cleveland and Boston are capable of winning
Game three on the road. But I think again, you know,
and especially the and the and the Celtics. I mean,

(15:53):
the Cavaliers did it too. They had a huge lead.

Speaker 4 (15:56):
In the second half, then all of a sudden, they
can't get a rebound, they can't make a shot.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
But as you said, they were playing with.

Speaker 4 (16:01):
Some some backup guys, so probably probably probably Cleveland more
than Boston and Boston.

Speaker 3 (16:10):
I agree with you both. You guys Boston down zero
and two. They know what they can do, they know
what they're capable of. They're the champs. I think they're
a little more confident than Cleveland right now going into
the Game three here. It's been pretty amazing watching the Knicks.
It's kind of cool that the Knicks are back to me.
I don't know why I agree, just growing up there,

(16:32):
I was voting for Boston.

Speaker 2 (16:33):
I agree with you.

Speaker 3 (16:34):
You know, you and I grew up at the same
time and when the Knicks were cool. It's been a
long time since the Knicks.

Speaker 4 (16:40):
Willis Reed and Earl the Pearl, Earl Walt, Dave de Busher,
Dave de Busher very good.

Speaker 3 (16:46):
Well, yeah, Clyde Frasier. That was a really cool team.
So I like the fact that the Knicks are Bill Bradley.
That's right, Bill Bradley too. I didn't who's the coach?
Can't think his name off him. The Lakers longtime coach
Phil Jackson, Bill Jackson, he was Phil Jackson, man, thank you, but.

Speaker 4 (17:07):
That was that was that was on the sixty that
was on the seventy team for sure.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
Jackson was okay.

Speaker 3 (17:16):
Yeah, But back to my point, I like the fact
the Knickerbockers are a viable, good, interesting, fun team.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
Now, yeah, it's good for the NBA.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
Yeah, they're scrappy, and we were talking about on a Wednesday.
They just they don't they just don't blink. And Jalen Brunston,
I think is is driving that bus. But I appreciate that.
And then back to back games with Michael Bridges getting
the last second steal.

Speaker 2 (17:41):
I mean, it's it's impressive. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (17:43):
I agree, you're kind of a fun, scrappy team. So
it's a roof for it, especially if you don't want
to roost for a Boston team.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
I think if you.

Speaker 4 (17:51):
If you listed the greatest players that are around six
feet tall, the top five to him players, you think
of Isaiah Thomas, you think of tiny Archibal, and there'd

(18:13):
be others. But Jalen Brunson, if games are close, he's
got the ability to create his own shot, and he's
strong enough to bounce people off of him. He'd be
in the top ten of sort of smaller players I
think all time. The Michale bridges like wakes up in

(18:34):
the fourth quarter ahead and scored a point and starts
knocking down jumpers everywhere. It's just it's I mean, this
is the fun time of year. If you're an NBA fan,
the action is pretty pretty keen. Even if you're not
an NBA fan. If you're a casual fan, playoffs are
the best. That's when that's when I start really paying
attention in both hockey and basketball. I know you watch

(18:55):
year round. This is a fun time of the year.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
I agree. Are you still a dial in to hockey?
Know the no? Yeah, I got back out. I'm really
not either.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
Ye kind of ruined it for me, to be honest,
although I wanted to ask you guys today and I
don't want to get things thrown at me by the
listeners or otherwise you would you.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
Be willing to root for me? Go again?

Speaker 1 (19:16):
I know this, this is still very fresh. The Stars
knocking us out, well, they're the odds on favor to
win it.

Speaker 4 (19:22):
Yeah, but they're literally the odds on odds back to
back hat trick. They are the odds on favorite in Vegas,
which win the Stanley could.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
Would you be willing to root for Meco? I know, right, you.

Speaker 3 (19:34):
Know what, the team that that knocked me out in
the first round. I would like to see them keep going.
Otherwise you get knocked out in the first round and
they get knocked out in round two and aren't even
that competitive. I think it makes it look worse for
the Avalanche. So I'm fine if the Stars win and
I like Retin then And that's kind.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
Of where we talked about the other day, Dave, we're
like any of the favorites, it makes sense. We thought
if the As won the series, they'd be the favorites
for now and be very obviously excited watching them take
on the Jets. I said it exactly the same grant
I were talking before the show. I almost said, I
don't know to the same exact question, like, I don't
know if I can root for Mico, mostly because of
the Stars and because of that that rivalry the Ads

(20:16):
and the Stars. But Miko's like his all time right
here for the As, absolutely so, And we did that
the other day.

Speaker 2 (20:21):
I remember when he was traded, we kind of went
through like is he to play had a top ten.

Speaker 4 (20:25):
There were some fans that agreed, and then there were
some longtime ass fans that disagreed. I think his numbers
and what he accomplished in his ten years, was it.

Speaker 2 (20:35):
Ten or eleven? He was ten?

Speaker 4 (20:38):
Yeah, I think what he accomplished forget about Stanley Cup,
but what he accomplished numbers wise in his AVS career.
To me, he'd be a top ten player all time,
texture said Dave Rick, and Moron Joker is the best
player in the world, let alone the NBA. Yeah, arguably, yes,

(20:59):
I do not disagree with that. I was asking David question,
by the way, and I'm sorry you were offended by it.

Speaker 2 (21:05):
I'm just asking David question, the NBA expert. I didn't
know that.

Speaker 4 (21:10):
If I if I type that, I didn't know that
it actually went to the text line who said that
I'm going to trace that number? Yeah, right, you know,
I was asking you because he watched a lot more
basketball than I do, and I've just I've been very
impressed with SGA. He's amazing player, and he plays tough

(21:31):
defense on top of everything else he does. See I
think you over eighty his defense, you do. I think
he's a good I mean, I think he's adequate. I
think he's okay, but he's not. You wouldn't say Sga
is like an elite defensive player, but he's elite in
every other things.

Speaker 2 (21:47):
But at least he plays defense.

Speaker 4 (21:48):
Yeah, because as you said, that's their system that makes
a lot of sense.

Speaker 2 (21:53):
Here on a Friday.

Speaker 1 (21:54):
Very excited to have you with us when we come back,
just as step why receiver coach for Illinois, and to
join us to talk about Pat r That's next the
Denver Broncos Rookies mandatory mini camp for the rookies.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
It began today.

Speaker 1 (22:10):
The media will get a chance to cover it tomorrow
and to help us discuss one particular rookie, Pat Bryant
out of Illinois. We head out so the kay with
common spirit, health highline and bring on Justin Stepp, who
is his wide receivers coach out there. Justin, thank you
so much for the time you're on with Dave Logan,
Ryan Edwards and Rick Lewis. How are you sir?

Speaker 5 (22:28):
Uh No, Well, I appreciate you guys. Give me a
chance to take it on with you.

Speaker 2 (22:32):
Yeah, good to coach. Good to have you on.

Speaker 4 (22:34):
So I think fans are excited and interested in Pat
Brian before they even have a chance to see what
he's going to be like. As a Denver bronco you
you would know better than anybody because you coached him.
What two or three qualities are most impressive to you
in terms of his his football skill and acumen.

Speaker 5 (22:56):
Yeah, I think number one is just how smart he is.
And you know, we played him a lot of different
plays a lot of different places in our offense. We
played him inside, we played him outside. I mean, heck,
the game win a touchdown against Rutgers, he switched himself
to the to the outside receiver and caught a game
win a touchdown pass. So he's got a real hot
football IQ. He's a really tough kid, you know. Coach

(23:18):
Bielima on our program, we talked about tough, smart, dependable.
You literally won't find a tougher guy. You won't find
a smarter guy. And you know a dependable guy that
you know all all the games this year, I don't
know if Pat had I don't know if he had
double digit m he's the entire season through through twelve games.
So he's a really smart player. He's really tough, and

(23:40):
he's dependable, Hey, coach.

Speaker 3 (23:42):
I grew up in the Midwest, was always a fan
of the fighting Alni And when Pat Bryant got drafted,
he was off a lot of people's radar, certainly here
in Denver. And when you go now and really look
at tape on him, you can see why Sean Payton
was in pressed with him. What do you see as

(24:02):
his comp in the NFL? The upside of Pat Bryant?
What is he? Where could he end up being? What
type of player?

Speaker 5 (24:10):
Yes, sir, I think I forget the name of the guy.
That is the guy that plays for the Saints that
coach Tayton heard that he he compare Pat Bryant to.

Speaker 2 (24:20):
Yeah, Michael Thomas.

Speaker 5 (24:21):
Yeah, yeah, yes, sir, And I thought it was a
great player comp too, you know, more of a physical kid.
You know, I've never seen a guy actually really enjoy
the physicality of blocking and the demeanor that comes with it.
And he I told him all the time, you have
no idea how much better, how much easier it makes
my job and the player the young kids watch the

(24:42):
best player, the best receiver in the room block the
way you do. It makes my job so much easier.
But a kid that a kid is not a kid
anymore but a guy that just wins contested catches. He
has an unbelievable ability to make plays at the catch
point in one on one situations. And he he's just
I mean, he's just clutch.

Speaker 2 (25:01):
He is.

Speaker 5 (25:02):
Anytime we needed a big player this year, he made
it and he showed up in the biggest moments. And
that's what your best players do. And he leads. He
was the first one in the building every day.

Speaker 2 (25:14):
You know.

Speaker 5 (25:14):
I gave him a hard time. I told him he
was like an old man already. He was the first
one in there and he'd stay and watched them. He'd
had practice wife before I did. And then he was
the last one to leave. He came to work, and
then he went back and hung out with his fiance
now wife, like they just he was. He was a pro,
you know, before he before he ever joined the Broncos.
But I think that Michael Thomas player comp is a

(25:37):
good one because I see him the same way.

Speaker 1 (25:39):
No block Rob, Yeah, he said he said that to us,
No block, no rock on the night that he was
drafted by the Broncos. He said that he prides himself
on that ability. Also, he said he likes to put
dbs into the dirt, which we of course loved here
in Denver chatting here with Justin Stepp, wide receiver coach
out there in Illinois.

Speaker 2 (25:56):
Personality, I'd love to get to know it.

Speaker 1 (25:58):
Because his personality, boy, it just jumped off the page
when we talked to him on Friday night. Tell us
a little bit more about your interactions. You guys named
him a captain out there, imagine for a reason.

Speaker 5 (26:08):
Yes, sir, Yeah, he's a four year guy here, you know,
with in this in this world of college football. You know,
he played behind Isaiah Williams, and not behind him, but
with and Casey Washington ended up getting drafted by the Falcons,
and Isaiah's with the Bengals, and so he wasn't a
featured guy, you know, really until this last year. And
that stuff that doesn't happen anymore, those guys will will leave.

(26:32):
So I think the most the most important thing about
Pat Brian is he's a loyal dude. Like he is
a he is loyal and if you know, if he
knows he's got your back, you got his back, He's
going to have yours. A real fun guy to be
around and he's not the most Honestly, he goes, oh,
he's unbelievable interviews. But you know, you put him in
a in a room, he's not gonna sit in there

(26:54):
and talk the whole time. He'll he'll hold the whole
room accountable. I think our guys really appreciate the fact
that when Pat actually did get up and speak, like
everybody and I'm just I'm not talking about the receivers,
it was the whole team sat up and paid attention
because they you know, when Pat Bryant speaks of you know,
everybody's watching and everybody's listening. So a really good leader.

(27:15):
He's just a solid guy. He's a really solid guy.

Speaker 2 (27:18):
Coach.

Speaker 4 (27:18):
You had a chance to uh to coach Cortland Sutton
as well. In fact, you named uh I think he
named one of your sons after Courtland. What what similarities
between the two players, just in terms of football stuff.

Speaker 2 (27:32):
Did you did you find.

Speaker 5 (27:35):
The physicality? You know, it's interesting because you know when
Courtland was with me, he was six four twenty five
and obviously that you see that kid, you see a
guy that size, you know he's going to be physical,
pass not as big, but pass just as physical. And
just the one on one catches, you know, I think,
I mean, heck, I think Courtland actually enjoyed it more
when the closer the DV was doing, the more comfortable

(27:57):
he felt with catching the football. And I think Pat's
a lot of the same way. It's hard to find
guys that can that can make those plays with guys
on their hip, you know, in tight coverage, and both
of those guys had had that same quality. And as
far as as far as the human beings, man, they're
just I mean, I named my son after Courtland. You know.
Everybody came in when Courtland was getting drafted was like, man, look,

(28:19):
this guy knows the maintenance people, he knows the janitors,
you know, everybody. There's got to be something wrong with
this kid. And I said, man, I'm naming my son
after him. So I don't know what else to tell you. You know,
we're not having kids, so there's no there's not going
to be a Pat another Pat running around. But it's
the same, it's the same thing. And he's he's about
the right things. He works his butt off, you know,
he comes from a really good family, and he's just

(28:40):
he's the kind of guy that that that that that
you want to be around and if you have a daughter,
that you would lest your daughter day in the heartbeat.

Speaker 2 (28:47):
Coach.

Speaker 3 (28:47):
One more thing for me, the forty time that Pat
Bryant ran at four six something. I don't remember exactly,
but a lot of fans here looked at that and go, wow,
you know, he's he can't run. I don't know what
Courtland ran at the combine. I'm guessing maybe a little
faster than that.

Speaker 2 (29:06):
In four five, four or five.

Speaker 3 (29:07):
Yeah, So does that concern you at all? Or is
he does he a football speed? I guess is the
question I'm asking.

Speaker 5 (29:15):
Yeah, he just he just has the ability to get open,
you know. I think of one time where he got
caught this year was against Rutgers, and I think it
was on about place seventy two, and it was on
a third down and within a drive and he came back.
We ran a little corner stiff and he the routes
at sixteen yards deep. He came back and attacked the football.
I think he caught it nine yards deep and turned
it up the sideline. I think he just ran out

(29:36):
of gas. But you look at the rest of the tape,
he doesn't get caught you know, he does a great job.
He has an unbelievab ability to use his body and
lean vertical into guys and create separation at the break
point of her out. And that's what I tell my
guys in this in my room. Listen, then listen. If
you can figure out a way to use your body
and use the tools that you have and create a
separation at the top of the route, you don't have

(29:56):
to run for four four five. I was, honestly, I
was shocked because I thought Pat would run four or five.

Speaker 2 (30:04):
But he does.

Speaker 5 (30:04):
He has football speed, he has the ability to get open,
and I don't think that's going to be an issue
for him.

Speaker 1 (30:10):
Coach Staph, this was a lot of fun. Really appreciate
the insight. Best e lect this upcoming season. Thank you
so much.

Speaker 5 (30:16):
I appreciate you guys for having me on.

Speaker 1 (30:17):
Thank you, coach Coach Stapf Justin Staph wide receiver coach there.

Speaker 4 (30:21):
The way was talking about he got caught inside the ten. Yes,
he ran all the way up the sideline and he
got tracked down. But that speed is enough speed to
be a productive player at that position in the league.

Speaker 2 (30:35):
And I've said that before.

Speaker 4 (30:36):
I would guess more than sixty percent of the of
the starting wide receivers, So thirty two teams, sixty four
maybe eleven personnel and extra, so somewhere between sixty five
and one hundred receivers that you could say are starters
in the league.

Speaker 2 (30:52):
I bet sixty plus.

Speaker 4 (30:54):
Percent run right now, somewhere between four five seven and
four six five.

Speaker 1 (31:03):
And the biggest thing for him is the reliable hands, right,
and the Broncos certainly could have used more of that
last year, adding reliable hands this year. Guy has one
drop last season, and as he pointed out, we talked
about a lot on draft night, it's three walk off wins.
That's such as such a big deal to have clutch
players like that.

Speaker 2 (31:22):
Yeah, you know.

Speaker 3 (31:23):
He's listed at six foot two. Courtland's what six six four?

Speaker 2 (31:28):
Yeah? So what nothing? I know what you're smiling at you? No,
I just know, I just something struck me. It's funny.

Speaker 4 (31:37):
In the interview, it was yeah, I'm having a hard
time refocusing after that. I mean, actually, you know what,
there's good Mexican food and champagne.

Speaker 3 (31:47):
Apparently it's a great restaurant there. I don't imagine, right,
don't you think.

Speaker 2 (31:52):
I've never been but I would trust that you're.

Speaker 4 (31:54):
Oh, I've never I mean I've been because the Bronco
has actually played a preseason game against the Bearers in Champagne, Illinois. Okay, right,
so yeah, I've been there, but I can't remember the
name of that Mexican restaurant. Yeah, so, so what was
I saying?

Speaker 2 (32:13):
Oh, six to two, Dave?

Speaker 3 (32:16):
You know, he runs a four to six something, and
you mentioned you think that's fast enough for.

Speaker 2 (32:19):
A guy his size.

Speaker 3 (32:21):
I thought he was a little taller than that because
I heard all the Courtland comps. Yeah, he's not as
big as court No, he's not. Apparently there are a
whole bunch of receivers not as bit I mean Courtland.
When you get up next to him in person, honestly
good he looks like an outside linebacker.

Speaker 2 (32:36):
Big dude. He's a big, big player, and he bolt up.

Speaker 1 (32:40):
A bit when he got because I remember when he
was drafted he was like a stream being and then
he bolt up as he kind of got into the league.

Speaker 4 (32:46):
I got some go ahead, good Mexican food. Interesting listening
to him, what are the points?

Speaker 3 (32:58):
He kind of put in X exclamation point on it
in a way, I thought, you know what, I mean, it's.

Speaker 5 (33:05):
Hard to find guys that can that can make those
plays with guys on their hip.

Speaker 2 (33:09):
Yeah, because guys do have a hard time.

Speaker 4 (33:15):
Guys do have a hard time making plays with guys
in their hip.

Speaker 2 (33:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (33:18):
Absolutely, Yeah, he made that very clear. Yeah, that's the
Mexican food reference. Okay boy.

Speaker 3 (33:28):
Yeah, you know, maybe he didn't do a lot of
interviews talking about it.

Speaker 2 (33:34):
He was fine, It was great. He says a lot
of really good.

Speaker 4 (33:38):
Like you've never lifted you chikup off a chair before?
Uh not when the MIC's open.

Speaker 3 (33:45):
We had that happened on our morning show many years
ago with Marvin Freeman, the Rockies pitcher. He was having
a huge year. I think he made the All Star
Game that year was tended to and he came on.
We could tell he was in bed, like he just
tell he was in bed. You could tell that he
just woke up because it's a morning, you know, we
call it in the morning. And he did the exact

(34:06):
same thing, and then he started laughing and he owned
up to it. I'll bet I mean it was. We
didn't let him off the hook on that one, absolutely not.
We played that over and over and over again. I
think we put it on one of our best of CDs.
I think that's the truth. So, uh, I know what
I'm talking about. That was legit. All right, thank you coach,

(34:28):
all right, thank you coach.

Speaker 1 (34:31):
As far as that, Brian, we got the the rookies
report for mandatory Midiicamp today, we get to watch the
practice tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (34:39):
Let me ask you this, not asking who you think
will have the best seasons.

Speaker 1 (34:42):
I think it's difficult to quantify, and I think you
probably lean towards Shade Bear in the first round.

Speaker 2 (34:46):
Or who are you most excited to see this upcoming.

Speaker 1 (34:49):
Season, Like who's Who's Who's piqued your interest the most
when it comes to this upcoming year.

Speaker 2 (34:54):
Dave from the.

Speaker 4 (34:55):
Rookie class, Well, I'm kind of interested in all of them,
but if I had to pick one, I would say RJ.
Harvey because I want to see how quickly he can
pick things up and assimilate himself into this offense.

Speaker 2 (35:13):
The running game, the passing game, the.

Speaker 4 (35:17):
Blitz, pick up all the things that a back has
to do. But again, the more that you watch film
on him in his career, man, oh man, he's.

Speaker 2 (35:26):
Got I didn't realize.

Speaker 4 (35:29):
Until I heard this week he had more twenty yard
runs in college football than.

Speaker 2 (35:33):
Any back in the country, including Ashton Gents.

Speaker 4 (35:37):
That's correct. So I think he's going to be a
really good player. I think, I really think, and not
to say that Baron isn't because I think he could
be a great player. But I think given the current
status of the running back room, to me, it's going
to be really fun and interesting to watch how quickly

(35:58):
this young guy can get up to speed, because I
would have to think if that happens relatively quickly, he's
going to play a lot of football.

Speaker 2 (36:07):
Yeah, it's easy for me. I would agree with you, Dave. RJ. Harvey.

Speaker 3 (36:11):
It's been so long since the Broncos have had an
explosive running back. He's going to be really fun. He's
going to be an impactful player from game one week one,
game one. So, and I'm not going to repeat what
Dave said because I agree with everything he just said. R. J.

Speaker 2 (36:27):
Harvey.

Speaker 1 (36:27):
For me, I mean it's a good pick. I mean
I think more to what the room is currently, Like
I said, I'm fascinated to think from an intrigue standpoint
to see where Jade Baron lines up. So for me,
it's not so much about the performance of the player.
I'm cheating here a little bit, but I think it's
about Okay, what do the Broncos have planned for him?
Because he's a day one starter, right, I mean, certainly

(36:50):
the coaching staff will make him earn that, but he's
a day one starter. You draft a guy twentieth overall,
you're going to play him a lot year one.

Speaker 2 (36:57):
But is this a hey, we're going to start him
out in nickel?

Speaker 1 (37:00):
So does that mean Jay Kwan McMillan is going to
be a guy that is going to be sort of
in rotation at that point?

Speaker 2 (37:06):
What does that mean for.

Speaker 1 (37:08):
Riley Moss if they started on the outside early, You
know what I'm saying?

Speaker 2 (37:12):
Like that intrigue is really fascinating for me.

Speaker 3 (37:14):
I could see him being the outside starting cornerback. I
think he's that good, and I think the Broncos are
thrilled that he fell to number twenty. I could see
that scenario. And then you've got Riley Moss, who could
do a number of things on that defense. He's versatile
player as well, and then a really really good backup.
If you Riley Moss to me, he's going to provide

(37:35):
depth with one of the best secondaries, if not the
best secondary in the NFL
