But Alzado back in the day and Lyle played here
was the second round I think the second round pick
of the Broncos. Then get traded to Cleveland and we
were teammates for I don't know three four years. What
what a what an interesting because when he when he
got drafted here, I was, I believe us, right out

of high school, so obviously following the Broncos. I mean
that was, you know, back back when they were starting
to sort of build toward that grade seventy seventeen. But
and I knew he was a boxing guy, and I
know he had an exhibition match at the old mile
High against Muhammad Ali. But I saw video of Lyle,

and Lyle was pretty skilled as a boxer. I mean
he was a big like a big dude, but he
was pretty skilled in terms of his movements. And he
had what I would call in boxing. He just had
he had good hands for a big man. So we
became teammates back there in Cleveland and in friends, and

he knew I was a boxing guy, right, So he
had all sorts of he had all sorts of things
that were interesting that and I've told the story before.
I pulled a hamstring on a Thursday and practice the
Thursday before the Broncos. The Browns played the Broncos. So
I wanted to play against the Broncos for sure. So

at practice practice is over, he's on the other side
of the locker room. He goes, hey, looks come here.
So walk over to his locker. He goes you pull Youami.
I said yeah. I said damn, I mean yeah.

He said bad. I said bad enough. I said, I'm
I'm I'm playing.

He goes hey, So he reached down his little thing
down to his locker and pull out like I don't know,
like a cup, a clear cup with a screw on
top with clear liquid in it. He goes, take this
home and use get some cotton balls and put it

in there and then put it right. Can you pinpoint
where the the pain is? I said, yeah, he goes, right,
put that put that on there. I said, okay, I said,
what is it? He goes, just put that on there
when you get home, put that on right, or the
paint is? I said, okay, what is it? You want
to play some under your mouth? I wouldn't tell you,

I said, I said, yes, I told the story. So
I took it home. It's just me and my dog,
huh right, living in Cleveland. I mean, I don't think
I had much furniture at all. So I'm sitting there
the kitchen table and I've got I've got that.

I must have looked at it for an hour, right,
open it up, smell it. There's no smell, no nothing.
So finally I said, I want to play. So I
put it on. And I mean twenty seconds after I
put it on, fifteen maybe the garlic taste went to
my mouth.

It was like I'd eaten the ass of a cow.

It was the worst taste in my mouth in the
history of my.

Lifetime and I stunk like garlic. I mean, it sticks

And a guy at a bodybuilding gym gave me some
I'd pulled something or whatever and same thing that that tastes.

Oh, it's awful. I felt like I had that for
like two weeks. I played. I was gonna say, maybe
went out beat secretary. I did.

I didn't play, but yeah, a little bit, Oh my gosh,
lot some stuff that I think you know retrospectively.

And he admitted it before he passed, but it took.
It took a little yeah. Yeah, he talked about that.

He said that the guy sides wiped his car and
he like chased him.

I mean, guys, there are some guys in the NFL
that are really aggressive, right, and it's a hard sport,
it's a tough sport, whatever, But that guy was a
legitimate tough guy. That guy, if you're going to fight him,
you have to be really serious about like how important

Was he the craziest guy? You craziest teammates you ever
played with? No character? I mean well no Leon White
and Rose coloradolge Van Vader. Yeah, Van was the craziest,
and he was exponentially crazier than Lyle and went on

to become world class wrestler, wrestled at over four hundred pounds,
wrestled in in Tokyo in front of you know, fifty
thousand people shoot fighting, which was real fighting. But he
was a guy too that you had to you had
to understand, you know, before you like said, hey, what

are you looking at? You got to be really serious
about you understand if you get involved with this guy,
you're you're going to get hurt.

So it's just not worth it. Yeah, he was gigantic man.

Uh, that same gym I talked about, there was a
guy just like that named Benny Poda.

He was a bodybuilder and he was Chuck Norris's bodyguard trainer.
Chuck worked out at the gym as well that I
was at, and Benny Poda was that guy where wherever
he he was like a shark in the water. Wherever
he was in the gym, everybody would just kind of
move around him.

He would just.

Walk up and he would just push a guy off
of you know, off a bench, just push him over
if he had to. Yeah, most of the times guys
would just get up. Okay, Benny, here you go. And
he ended up living in a cave. I swear to god.
You could google and took Awa. You could google Benny Poda.

I don't know if he's still in a cave. He's
probably about sixty five or seventy now. But he was
a badass dude and a scary guy, very scary man.

he was.

That's funny. I remember Lyle Alzado from mcgiver. He was
on an episode of Career for a minute, there he was.
He was on mcgiver was my show back in that.
I loved that show and I remember him be I
was like, you know, the marriage of two worlds is
here on mcgiver.

Yeah he was, I mean he was. He was a
hell of a good player. He was a character for sure.
I think if Lyle fought Van Vader. Lyle would come
up on the short end of that fight just because
of size and power and strength.

But one of the texters here said Alizada was a badass.
This guy's an next law enforcement guy says, faced him
once it and admit he backed my ass down. Uh,
not so much with the other six that showed up.
And he was smart though, decided to allow us to
briefly take him into custody. Yeah, I mean he was again.

You know, Lyle didn't always make the smartest decisions in
the world.

Yeah, there's a true story about bull Van. He was
driving home and I coached his son in high school
and I mean, what an interesting four years.

But he was driving home and got in a bit
of a wreck, one car wreck, right, Yeah, So decides
I better get out of his car and get home. Well,
he gets home, but the police come to the house
look at his registration in the breck car, and so

they want to you know, they want to push you
through a few drills to see how you are. He
didn't have any interest in going through the drills, and
so the story is a it was a canine. It
was a canine patrol officer, and he said, listen, I
don't want to have to get the dog, but you're

was there to fight.

of a sudden it was like.

I didn't remember that, So Allie kind of toyed with
for a little bit and then said okay, yeah, we'll

point then I think Ali said.

I'm good. He just kind of moved me with one

thirty got up to over four hundred. Pounds but you're
talking about a guy who was a second around draft

All Big eight for three consecutive years at three different

could stand on the top rope when he was over
four hundred pounds and do a back like flip flip
flip into the ring and land on his feet at

about his steroid use and he blamed that on his
cancer that he. GOT i don't know IF i had

i mentioned bodybuilding gyms THAT i worked out at in
Southern california at the. Time guys were shooting up in
the gym and they would get. It just across the Border.
Tijuana you just drive, down load up the trunk of
your car with, it come back and now you've got
you've got steroid antabolic.
